Tupelo Honey [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Van Morrison's "Caledonia soul"--his unique blend of Irish mysticism and spiritual questing, literary allusion and blue-eyed R&B--can be as beautiful and deeply emotional as any music ever made. That's certainly the case on 1971's Tupelo Honey, one of the finest albums of Morrison's long career. Kicking off with the classic "Wild Night," Tupelo Honey is as completely joyous as the normally bitter Van gets, particularly on the title track and the unabashedly grateful, slow-building "You're My Woman," both among the most moving love songs he's recorded. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Re-mastered beautifully.......2007-06-26

This CD by Van Morrison was re-mastered beautifully.

If you once owned the LP of this CD, and wish to add the CD version to your CD Library, then this re-mastered version is just great.

I recommend it.

Even if this re-mastered version may cost a bit more than the regular stereo version, I recommend spending the extra dollar or so more and getting this re-mastered version of TUPELO HONEY.

4 out of 5 stars Tupelo Honey.......2006-03-10

I've always liked the song Tupelo Honey and was unable to
get my hands on it as it wasn't released on other albums later on. The rest of this album is good for a Morrison fan as
it reaches back before the popular stuff you've heard.
If you're Van Morrison fan, you'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting, Joyful, and Romantic.......2005-12-22

I bought Tupelo Honey on vinyl back when it was first issued and got years of enjoyment listening to it. Then as time passed, other music became more immediate, and Tupelo Honey languished in my record cabinet. But then in the last couple of years, Van Morrison or his record company decided to remaster and reissue some of his back catalogue, so I jumped at the chance to get this on CD at a very good price.
Tupelo Honey should appeal to anyone who likes Van Morrison on any level. Not only are the songs more "accessible" than much of his later work, the fact that he was still in love at the time this was issued shines through in the music. The tone from start to finish is uplifting, joyful, and romantic.
Those who listened to Top 40 in the early 70s will immediately recognize Wild Night. While good, it is far from the best song on the album. I like the entire recording, but my favorites are the jaunty (Straight to Your Heart) Like A Cannon Ball, Starting A New Life, the loving You're My Woman, and the anticipatory romance of When That Evening Sun Goes Down.
Of all Van Morrison's albums, Tupelo Honey is about as close to Southern music as he gets. It finds Van at the peak of the second period of his solo career. If you like a little romance and a lot of soul, then you should own this if you don't already.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums of the early seventies.......2005-09-13

The title says it all with my opinion of Tupelo Honey. Definitely my favorite Van album. It is probably nostaglic for me, because when I was a kid my dad would sing it to me on road trips in his tone death best. The album kills. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars A great blast from the past!.......2005-08-29

Van Morrison never sounded so good. It's great to revisit his talent and Amazon made it easy for me.

4 out of 5 stars Relax and enjoy.......2005-07-02

Being a hardcore Van's fan, I took it as a duty to buy this album. Not that I'm against this cross-over idea nor I dislike String Quartet music in general. Only when you like a musician so much, you're always a bit wary towards reinterpretation of his music. Of course many have covered Van's songs so far and some have done a pretty good job (Bobby McFerrin's Moondance being an apt example), but this is an altogether different affair. The result, if not extraordinary as one would hope, is highly listenable and consistent. It demonstrates that Van's forte is not only is other-worldy voice, but also all the other aspects of his music. When a song of any genre is "classically" treated, the result may be double-edged, embellish it on one side with clever orchestration but also ruthlessly reveal the compositional shortcomings. I'm therefore happy to note that Van's songs come out as good as possible after the "washing", at times attaining a true symphonic value and what is someway surprising is that the uptempo numbers work as good as the ballads which were easier targets and in some cases already included strings in the original arrangement. Good on whoever selected the tracks that managed to go a bit ahead of the first albums, including at least two tracks which are more recent and well-suited for teh project. Moondance (the album) gets the lion's share, personally I would have ravaged more Astral Weeks or Veedon Fleece, but I'm not complaining, I enjoyed the album pretty much and would recommend it to Van's lovers who also like instrumental music.

These melodies sneak up on you and linger long after you've switched off the CD player. That is why Tupelo Honey is one of Van Morrison's most accessible and commercially successful albums. There's the gorgeous title track with its delightful imagery and the swirling I Wanna Roo You with its foot tapping rhythm. When That Evening Sun Goes Down is another catchy song with a propulsive beat whilst the structural complexity of Moonshine Whisky, with its tempo changes and delectable female backing vocals, makes for a magnificent composition, similar to some of those meandering gems on Astral Weeks. Wild Night is a great R&B outing with an old time rock and roll feel and Straight To Your Heart is another melodic rocker. I also love Old Woodstock, a song filled with warmth and joy. And that is what this album celebrates - domestic bliss and the joy of life. In its own way, it is therefore as spiritual as most of his best work, although perhaps not so overtly mystical. Well whether you're into Van for his poetry or for his tunes, this album will please you. It's a masterpiece.

      5 out of 5 stars Van Morrison's FINEST HOUR.......2005-09-06

This album was made when Van Morrison was in love? Who knows? It has all the ear marks of a man smitten and not ashamed to admit it. The lyrics are music by themselves. The music and words are a combination to inspire fleeting thoughts of younger days out on the town. Wild Nights are calling...
Somewhat dated? Yep. You bet! The music and thoughts are timeless. Not only do I own and love it, but my late 20's daughter and her husband own and love it.
You can't go wrong on this one.
