The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Anthology 2 doesn't disappoint. Outtakes and demos show the building of songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," while the pure pop song writing of Rubber Soul and Help! is also documented, along with the sonic experimentation that characterized Revolver. Even if the legendary proto-metal jam of "What's the New Mary Jane" didn't see the light of day here, there is plenty for any Beatles fan. --Chris Nickson

Real Love.......2007-06-07
To some critics, this is just a grab bag of Beatles outtakes. To others like me, it's a mini-revelation of sorts, and a chance to revisit Beatles history. The milestone of this is the Beatles' final collaboration of sorts - "Real Love" - Lennon seems to drive this with real emotion and his former bandmates play with it as if they were all in the studio. It's a great, fitting tribute to the talent of the entire band.
The second interesting part for me was CD 2 - the embryonic growth of Strawberry Fields Forever - revealed in three successive takes here - makes for a satisfying and different experience of the song. It feels somewhat dimensionalised.
While not everything is fantastic or that different here, the Beatles were pretty consistent, and what is here makes for a complete Beatles experience. To enjoy it more, watch the companion DVD set. Worth the price of admission? Absolutely.
`Read My Lips "The Anthology Music CDs Are Not Worth Buying - Save Your Money!" Diehard Beatles Fan`.......2007-01-21
As a 57-year old dedicated Beatles fan since 1963, I listen some Beatles songs everyday 365 days a year. UNLIKE the ANTHOLOGY DVDs and VHS VIDEOS, these ANTHOLOGY MUSIC CDs ARE 100% DISTORTED WORTHLESS CRAP BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN UNFINISHED SONGS FULL OF MISTAKES of the BEATLES PRACTICE DEMO RECORDINGS and EXHIBIT NONE OF THE BEATLES CREATIVE MUSIC GENIUS FOUND ON ORIGINAL ALBUM'S FINAL RECORDINGS.
No "Spoken Word Intros" Like Volume 1, but Still Outstanding Material.......2006-12-14
The Beatles need no introduction when it comes to the elite of Rock/Pop music. When trying to "rank" the greatest artists of the Rock/Pop era, there is no doubt that the quartet from England ranks number one on just about every list. Going even further, the Beatles might be the top act in the history of modern music - among any genre. Some quarter-century after their breakup, the Beatles began to consider their place in history. This impetus played a key role in the release of the three volume, "Beatles Anthology" CD set and corresponding television documentary. One of the main attractions of this project was that it would bring the three surviving Beatles together for the first time since the famous breakup. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr would collaborate together on two unfinished John Lennon songs: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" - creating a "virtual" reunion among the four band members. This three volume set would not be an ordinary greatest hits collection - it would provide a historical retrospective to the band through rare and unreleased material. The second volume, "Beatles Anthology 2" covers the middle to late years of the Beatles from 1965 through 1968 - and shows some of their most creative material.
As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. The material is arranged in chronological order. One of the strengths of "Beatles Anthology Volume 1" was that there was material that was prefaced with spoken words by the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. These spoken words helped set the stage for the material to follow. Unfortunately, "Beatles Anthology 2" does not have any spoken words with the exception of some comments that are on the demo cuts. While the content of "Beatles Anthology 2" is still very good, I still think it falls a bit short when compared to Volume 1. One positive is that Volume 2 does contain an outstanding 46 page booklet that helps to supplement the listening experience. This collection should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". Instead of studio cuts, this collection consists of outtakes, demos, and rarities that construct a terrific listening experience.
Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:
1) "Real Love" is a good song. When compared to the other "virtual reunion" song on Volume 1, "Free as a Bird", it is the better of the two cuts. "Real Love" features Lennon on lead vocals (unlike "Free as a Bird" that had also had vocals by McCartney and Harrison) Like "Free as a Bird", - it was produced by Harrison's "Wilbury" partner Jeff Lynne produced the song. I didn't think this song belonged as the first song, but given the fact that this doesn't fit in with the early material - I'm not sure where this should have been put.
2) Like Volume 1, George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce "Real Love", he produced the Anthology series as a whole.
3) This collection does a better job at providing demo cuts than Volume 1. In particular it is very interesting to hear demo versions such as "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Yesterday", "The Fool on the Hill", "I'm Only Sleeping", and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"
4) The collection features four live cuts ("I Feel Fine", "Ticket to Ride", "Yesterday", and "Help!" that were recorded at the ABC Theatre in Blackpool for the British Television Show, "Blackpool Night Out". These live cuts are outstanding.
5) Volume 1 featured much more in the way of covers. On Volume 2 the majority of the cuts are original Beatles compositions with the exception of Carl Perkins' "Everybody Trying to Be My Baby" and Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music".
6) There are three instrumentals worth noting: "Eleanor Rigby", "Within You Without You", and the unissued "12-Bar Original". "12 Bar Original" is highlighted by the Harmonium played by George Martin. However the instrumental version of "Eleanor Rigby" simply blew me away.
7) I didn't classify the version of "Got to Get You Into My Life" as a demo, but more like an alternate version. While not as strong or polished as the final version that was released, I still found this intriguing. There are alternate lyrics and "pauses".
8) Perhaps the most amazing thing about this collection is the Beatles transform from the early 1960 sound into their psychedelic era. The bluesy "12 Bar Original" and very psychedelic "Tomorrow Never Knows" are ordered back to back and show how dramatic a transformation that was.
9) The three cuts of "Strawberry Fields Forever" really demonstrate how the Beatles came to evolve what would be the final product. The demo starts out as a folksy version and you can hear how they evolve some more psychedelic elements into the arrangements on the second two cuts.
10) While some of the material on this version is unfinished or interrupted by spoken words, it is what adds to the charm of the collection. I heard a disc-jockey in "New York" so impressed with this collection as he said "...and this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.
Overall, this is one terrific collection. I've heard that this collection is not geared toward the novice fan, but I think anyone with an interest in modern music history will appreciate this collection. This collection is best listened to when you listen to it from start to finish. I wish more groups would follow this formula for producing retrospectives. Be sure to follow along and read the liner notes that are included - they are as good as you can get. Despite the lack of the "Spoken Word Intros" that were on Volume 1, this is still an outstanding collection. Highly recommended.
Truly Historic.......2006-12-05
This volume of the Beatles Anthology continues where volume 1 left off, around the time of Help. It also presents another new song, "Real Love." This was a time of creativity and a change in direction in the Beatles music. In some cases, the alternate takes presented here are radicaly different from the masters. One example of this is "Got to Get You Into My Life." There are also some live tracks on disc 1, which are very interesting to hear. Some highlights for me are:
*Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby - from the 1965 Shea Stadium concert, not used in the film.
*I'm Looking Through You - different, with a very funky, earthy sound.
*Rock and Roll Music - live in Japan 1966, the final tour.
*Good Morning Good Morning - without the chorus or overdubs
I greatly enjoyed hearing the working versions of the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, two of their most creative albums. This album is a must for the serious collector.
Paul's Fatal Mistake.......2006-08-23
The story goes that Paul decided to end the band after discovering that John had turned over the Let It Be tapes to Phil Spector behind his back, and muzaked his beloved Long and Winding Road. But truely the real end came with Paul's refusal to release the last song on this anthology.
Both John and Paul had a knack for tapping into the rapidly evolving zeitgeist of the 60's. All You Need is Love may seem a little precious at this far removed time, but it was the perfect world rally rant at the peak of the summer of love.
Similarly, the world's attention in early '68 was on the Beatles celebrated trip to India to study with the Mahariji. What secret had they learned that they could impart on us? Of all the songs written during that sabbatical, the one that would have satisfied the curiousity of of the current youth culture was John's vision of spiritual wonder and inner peace, Across the Universe. A beautifully tranquil mantra to allow the fans a couple of weeks to contemplate before moving on.
But the ever competetive Paul would not hear of it. He was working on his very catchy, paternal influenced Lady Madonna. Brian was no longer around to intervene with his wonderful sense of timing. John's moment to capitalize on world attention was shattered. A week later, during the very next session, Hey Bulldog, he brought into the studio for the very first time his new partner, Yoko.
There were plenty of songs written in India to fill up most of the white album, and John's sudden disdain for the group venture was not completely evident until that batch was used up.
So here it is, before it mangled by World Wildlife, Phil Spector and finally the naked Paul, John's last shot at global connection in all its shimmering glory. (68 was a year where a lot of potentially positive things ended up pretty downtrodden.)
"Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend."

"The weight" is over, pick this up and enjoy Duane's magic!.......2007-06-17
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
It has been a unanimous vote that the legion of Duane fans prefer the first Anthology. That said in no way does it desecrate the wide range of Duane's talents showcased on Volume 2.
Duane's brilliance can be appreciated even more once you get through a listen to both Anthologies. Many terrific players are locked into one style of playing and it becomes their calling card. The skill displayed by Duane is well noted but we never want to overlook how his talent went in so many directions. He could play the blues, country, folk, and rock but never did a solo or a rhythmic pattern feel inferior in one of those categories.
Duane's presence in a recording studio was good enough to push his fellow musicians into higher expectations. Listen closely to "Dirty Old Man." Lulu had a solid career in the U.K. (1960's) with her combination pop and rhythm and blues vocals. "Dirty Old Man" has her singing the blues and Duane providing the backing for her to confidently explore new territory.
"Matchbox" sounds wonderful with Ronnie Hawkins and Duane's excellent rendition.
"Walk On Gilded Splinters" from Johnny Jenkins is another highlight. Duane's guitar sounds as if it playing only for you. The entire 5:15 is captivating!
When the Duck & The Bear track "Goin' Up The Country" (It is the same song you all know and love from Al Wilson- Canned Heat) first resonates from the speakers you'll feel as you have been lassoed between the tweeters and woofers!
Even if the new math says "1 is greater than 2", two is pretty special!
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Impressive.......2007-02-01
Not as good as volume #1 but still amazing guitar playing and a great collaboration of other amazing musicians.
Duane is a rock god.......2007-01-12
this one is not as good as the first volume but it still has good ole Duane Allman feel to it
ESSENTIAL COMPANION TO VOL. 1, BUT NOT EQUAL TO IT.........2006-08-23
This volume doesn't reach the heights that the first one does, but it includes some very strong selections. Actually, I'm surprised that both volumes didn't have more songs from the historic "Layla" sessions. Gregg Allman once said that it was Duane's favorite recording session. "Born to be Wild" doesn't feature any significant guitar (Wilson Pickett shines here) and could have been left off in favor of one of the blistering lead guitar duels between Duane and Eric Clapton. The two songs from Duane's own aborted solo album sound great, and are a lot of fun. This volume digs deeper into the session work, and, of course, there is plenty of outstanding acoustic and electric slide guitar on this volume as well, served up the way only Duane could do it.
Definitely Recommended as a companion to Volume 1.
As good as I remember it.......2006-07-04
I had this on vinyl, and really, really liked it. The album disappeared somewhere, and I was glad to find this. Duane Allman had an uncanny knack of being able to sing in many different styles, with many different people, and do them all well.

Revisionism can be as rewarding as rediscovery; indeed, they often make a compelling duo. Those sentiments drive veteran producer Hal Willner's tribute to pioneering musicologist Harry Smith's documentation and preservation of American folk forms--music that was already an endangered species by the time he originally compiled them for Folkways Records in the early '50s. As he's done on similar tributes to musicians as varied as jazz giants Monk and Mingus, Italian film scoring legend Nina Rota, and songwriters Kurt Weill and Leonard Cohen, Willner puts together a group of musicians as intriguingly eclectic as the vintage songs they're covering. That Smith's own original efforts helped fuel the '60s folk boom that in turn inspired more than a few of the musicians here helps give the collection the warm sensibility of musical traditions coming full circle.
Spread across two CDs and a pair of DVD's are a rich slate of performances captured in Los Angeles, New York, and London in 1999 and 2001, as well as documentary material about Smith's own pioneering efforts that helped inspire them. Beck and Lou Reed spin spare, harrowing takes on blues godfathers Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, respectively, while Elvis Costello, Wilco, Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, Van Dyke Parks, the McGarrigles, and others offer up covers characterized by varying degrees of reverence. But, as is typical of most Willner projects, it's the more unlikely musical pairings here that yield the greatest intrigues, be they Pere Ubu's David Thomas recasting "Fishin' Blues" in his forceful persona or Bill Frisell's distinctive jazz sensibilities--the latter also suffusing Gavin Friday's "Fatal Flower Garden" with ghostly elegance. A welcome sense of playfulness also surfaces throughout, one whose good humor even makes room for a relevant clip from Chris Guest's A Mighty Wind folk mockumentary, as well as amusing recollections by some of the artists influenced by Smith's original musical archaeology. More than merely revering history, this is a collection that cheerfully revels in its reinvention. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Very interesting souvenir of a once in a lifetime experience..........2007-04-22
I attended the concert on the first night in LA, from which a majority of the material here was drawn (I actually stuck it out 'til the 2:00 am conclusion!) What drew me to the show is much the same as the appeal of this set - the chance to see 30 or more of your favorite singers and musicians on the same stage (and a few who you could do without), playing songs from what just might be the greatest and most influential compilation (or "mix tape") of all time! At the very least, this is a very nice souvenir of the event. The interviews and backstage/rehearsal footage in the DVD are very illuminating and are ample testimony to the mad genius of Hal Willner (creator/producer).
Some of the performances here are a lot less impressive that my memory of them, while others (David Johansen, Richard Thompson and Elvis Costello, among others) hold up very well. Willner should be commended for showcasing criminally underrated artists like Robin Holcomb and Van Dyke Parks, as well as for pushing some people (like Beck and Beth Orton) out of their comfort zone material-wise, resulting in some very memorable performances. Some of my other favorites here: Sonic Youth (with trombonist Roswell Rudd) burn up the stage on "Dry Bones", David Thomas is an insane genius, Bob Neuwirth, Geoff Muldaur and Steve Earle all individually show they are up to the task.
There were some classic moments from the night I attended that didn't make it to this release, including Garth Hudson's bizarre and amazing "Recessional Music" on the Royce Hall pipe organ, and Daniel Lanois' mini-set of the Anthology's Cajun songs (accompanied by his super-loud electric guitar). The pre-Mighty Wind Folksmen, introducing some much needed perspective, are rightfully represented here. However, not included was their version of "Flashdance," which somehow said it all (the audience were larfing). Also, not to be forgotten was Mary Margaret O'Hara's train wreck version of "Better Things" (which is represented here by a less chaotic version from a different night). It caused a mass exodus - as it was about midnight at that point, a lot of people were probably suddenly remembering they had babysitters or jobs to go to in the morning!
Being a lot more familiar with the original Anthology recordings now than I was prior to the concert, I am probably a lot more critical of these interpretations, some of which are frankly a bit superficial. Also, it is a bit more noticeable, especially on the DVD, which performers hadn't done their homework and learned the songs thoroughly before the show! On the other hand, some of the versions here caused me to have new appreciation for the songs themselves and really focus on the brilliance and bizarreness of the lyrics. A lot of contemporary songwriters could stand to check them out..
On the technical end, the camera work on the DVD is a bit "on the fly" but not too bad considering there was probably very little rehearsal/blocking. Audio-wise, the recording quality is much better than expected (I'm guessing there was a litlle bit of post-production repair, including fixing some fluffed lyrics). The second DVD ("Old Weird America") that delves a bit more into Harry Smith and the origins of the Anthology, has been shown a bit in art house theaters around the country and is almost worth the price of the set by itself.
Some good some not so good.......2007-02-08
Overall worthwhile, although I won't be listening to it often.
David Johansen, take a bow.......2007-02-07
There are many good things in this package, but none better than David Johansen's two mighty contributions, 'Old Dog Blue' and 'James Alley Blues'. He's come a long, long way since the New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter, and it seems to me that he's finally where he should be.
Petra Haden's 'Single Girl' is pretty good as well. But Johansen's performances (both captured on the dvd) are nonpareil. Can't help but feel that of all the artists here, he and Haden are the ones Harry Smith would have recognised at once as belonging to the American tradition he curated.
Fantastic--the "folk process" documented!.......2007-01-22
If you are curious about this but are not familiar with the original "Anthology of American Folk Music"--GET IT, and listen. It is like looking back in time, sort of like the Hubble telescope, only we are looking at images from our own human heritage, and perhaps ourselves.
As Hal Willner says, there are pieces you will love and pieces you might not like. But in truth, this is how the artists in this collection interpreted the originals. And even in the ones I was less than enthusiastic about, I saw something, and went back with a greater appreciation of the original. As a result I developed more enthusiasm for the new performance. This is something to be savored over and over.
I had been listening to Folkways LPs and subscribing to Singout! since the early '60s, and aquired the anthology in the early '70s. I had no previous knowledge of many performers in this set. So this was an eye-opener for me. I even read a review of a person, although generally positive, who wondered why "The Folksman" were in this. My answer is, "we perhaps should not take anything too seriously, and what if the gift of life itself is just a joke?"
A nice collection: but a lot less than perfect........2007-01-03
No collection will please everyone. That being said, this one left me a little cold in that the coices about what to include and what to leave out were not the choices I would have made were I producing this collection.
Without going into details and whys - suffice it to say that before buying this set, you need to take a close look at the playlist so that you will not wind up buying something that is appreciably different than what you were hoping it would be.

Amazing Music.......2004-09-05
This is some of the most relaxing music I have ever heard. I was introduced to Caldwell's music after seeing his name as the songwriter to the Peter Cetera and Amy Grant duet "Next Time I Fall". His songs are very melodic and powerful. His music definitely reminds me of Peter Cetera's music and 80s Chicago. There is not one filler song on this cd. It is the best smooth jazz cd I have ever heard. All of the songs have lots of layered keyboards and guitars that make the songs just flow. Essential for smooth jazz and soft rock fans.
Why don't they play THIS on the radio???.......2004-01-30
I really miss not having a smooth jazz station in Boston, MA. That's where I first heard Bobby's music. This cd I bought after seeing the songs that were on it, and after having purchased his first Anthology cd. I had my my favorites before buying it "Heart of Mine", "Next time I fall" "What you won't do." But now, that list includes "Shape I'm in" "Janet", heck I can't name them all, but buy this cd, or borrow a friends, you'll want it for yourself!!!
OUTSATNDING!!!!!!!.......2003-12-18
Bobby is fantastic!!!!!!!! This is a great album.
Open Your Eyes...and ears........2003-06-10
Thank goodness for Larry Carlton. I was looking for his collaboration with TOTO's Steve Lukather, and pretty much right in front of it was this CD. Up to that point I had been familiar with Bobby Caldwell only as a songwriter (and a great one at that), so was surprised to learn of his extensive recorded output.
Opening with "What You Won't Do For Love" (which, I swear I had never heard before) the disc is a delight from start to finish, and seems to sound even better each time you listen to it. Amongst my favourite cuts are "Open Your Eyes", "In The Name Of Love", "Janet", "Where Is Love" and "Rain". I was also most surprised to find that his version of "Heart Of Mine" - probably the first of his songs that I had known - managed to surpass the hit version by Boz Scaggs in quality. "Next Time I Fall" is also superior (IMHO) to the duet version by Peter Cetera and Amy Grant, which I always thought was brilliant as it was.
A great artist, and one this collection has made me very interested in investigating much more thoroughly.
Great stuff.......2001-10-19
What can I say? You get all the great stuff here. Classics like "What You Won't Do For Love", "All or Nothing at All", and "Heart of Mine" are here, as well as newer songs like "Without Your Love" and "Cry". There's also two brand new songs, including the catchy and uplifting "Every Time You Say My Name".
Now I can only hope that he would like to release a 3rd part Anthology album (maybe titled "Timeless"?), with songs like:
1. Back to You
2. First Time
3. Don't Give Me Bad News
4. Stuck on You
5. Love Won't Wait
6. Take me Back to Then
7. China
8. Words
9. One Love
10. Walk on by
11. I Don't Want to Lose Your Love,
12. Show Me, and
12. Promise (This song is just so sweeet!)
These are the best of him, I hope he knows it. I heard that he's going to release a new album in 2002...can't wait to hear it!

In his '60s heyday, there was never any doubt that Johnny Rivers (nee Ramistella) was an energetic performer with a good ear for hit material. In retrospect, though, Rivers's numerous AM radio hits boasted an emotional honesty that belied his commercial image. That point is made repeatedly on this 2 CD, 36-song set, which contains all of his hits and demonstrates the singer-guitarist's ease with a variety of styles, from spare '50s-style rock & roll("Memphis," "Mountain of Love"), bluesy party rock ("Secret Agent Man," "The Seventh Son"), bittersweet balladry ("Poor Side of Town," "The Tracks of My Tears"), gentle folk-rock ("Summer Rain," "Into the Mystic"), and smooth middle-of-the-road pop ("Swayin' to the Music"). --Scott Schinder

I have two copies of this CD set. I love it. I've listened to it over and over. I highly recommend this Cd set to all. You will enjoy it!
Johnny Rivers' Anthology.......2003-01-25
This is by far the most awesome and complete compilation of Johnny Rivers' songs. I realize he didn't write most of them himself, and he is commonly known as a "cover artist", but, after listening to this CD, you won't even remember that anyone else sang them before him!! His voice is so unique and memorable, espcially in "Swaying' to the Music (Slow Dancing)" and "Do You Want to Dance?" A special treat is "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", (for all of us 60's peace-niks) and "Cupid", which was a big surprise to hear from the usually serious Johnny Rivers. Bottom line -- Johnny Rivers can sing any song, any time, as evidenced by the wide range of music on this CD. By the way, I just ordered my second Anthology cassettes; I wore out the first ones!!

An American Original.......2003-01-14
One of the first LPs I ever bought with my own money was a United Artists album entitled The Very Best Of Johnny Rivers, which I must have picked up around 1974 or so--and I have been a Rivers fan ever since. As other reviewers have noted, Johnny Rivers, though essentially a "cover artist," was much more than that--like many great interpreters (Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris come to mind), he had an ability to take most any song and make it his own, regardless of genre. Starting out as a Chuck Berry rock-and-roller with his "a-go-go" sound ("Memphis," "Maybelline") he made forays into folk-rock ("Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"), Motown ("The Tracks Of My Tears," "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'"), blues ("Parchman Farm," "Seventh Son"), R&B ("Sea Cruise," "Rockin' Pneumonia"), country (Buck Owens' "Under Your Spell Again"), pop ("By The Time I get To Phoenix") and even progressive rock ("Whiter Shade Of Pale," "Into The Mystic"). Whatever he did, though, it was undeniably American music, as befits a man who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
While the hits are all here--and they're all great--some of the real gems in this collection are the ones you may never have heard: "It's Too Late," "These Are Not My People," "City Ways" and "Muddy River" are particular favorites of mine. Overall, an underappreciated artist and an American original. Essential listening.
guilty pleasure again..........2002-01-03
If you're a baby boomer born in the 50s and came of album (not singles)buying age, as I did, in the late sixties ,you probably dismissed Johnny Rivers as being hopelessly lame and un-hip. Yeah,me too.But as with Lulu, and Jackie DeShannon, and the Box Tops, and The Rascals, well hindsight is a funny thing. I secrectly loved every single Johnny Rivers (born John Ramistella in New Orleans, and that speaks volumes)ever released. I'm sure the LPs of the time were full of the usual filler and I wasn't gonna take a chance with my allowance on 'em anyway. But now I'm real happy to own and play this comprehensive 2 disc set of wonderful blue-eyed soul and fun pop.The guy can play some guitar and his distinctive vocal style makes all the Chuck Berry and Motown covers different and fun. "Poor Side Of Town" still gets to me, and my nine and ten year old sons are shimmying and hully-gullying around the house to the sounds of "Secret Agent Man" as I type. They are not easy to please either, if it don't prance, the boys don't dance.A great buy and a whole lotta fun. The problem is, now I havta go back and re-evaluate just how much I liked those ol' Grass Roots and Soul Survivors singles. Not as much as I like these tunes I'll betcha.

Customer Reviews:
A NICE TRIP, BACK TO 1972................................2005-09-04
Threw out my old vinyl on this baby, got out of the 1970s, and with the 21st century, and picked up this cd. I love it, the hoakiness, the fun, the dialouge and that post psychedelic sound. "Deepthroat" since its release in 1972, has grossed over $600,000,000 and cost $25,000 to make in one week of filming in Florida. Linda Lovelace with her assumed talents and "Deepthroat" revolutionized the porn industry. Fine linear notes by Porn Porker "Ron Jeremy" are a facinating look into this landmark movie. Everybody was seeing Deepthroat" instead of just talking about it, now doing it, well that is another story better left unsaid. This music brings you back to the fun 1970s. "Deepthroat II" is a better soundtrack than 1, but I still like the original the best. The lackluster organ rips, the raunchy dialouge, all this brings you back to a turmoil filled time with the unfortunate Vietnam War going on, but some what a simpler time.........R.I.P. LINDA LOVELACE,DEEPTHROAT TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Deep Throat To You All!.......2005-01-31
Now I have owned Trunk's copy of this record for the last 5 years. Previously I heard the original copy on a friends record player. The sound quality always sucked hard until this release by Light In The Attic. From reviewing the CD it appears old film equipment was used to convert from mono to stereo. And the tracks actually sound good! On top of that LITA has added Deep Throat 2 to the CD! Probably better music then Throat 1...and barely ever heard. There are some sick notes by the hedge hog and a prof William Wackenstein. Ron speaks of deep throating tricks while Prof William talks about throat parties, ludes and trying to bang Trannies! What a group the LITA label hangs with! These guys obviously have deep issues! Make sure and peel off the sticker on the cover...as santa brings a hard one for you peepers! Grab your girl, a cheap bottle of wine and start the deep throatin' - and smash Trunk's old copy - YOU DON'T NEED IT ANYMORE!

His whisky-grained vocals and alternately sweet, stinging acoustic guitar have made Scottish troubador John Martyn a seductive but sadly overlooked original among British folk performers since his emergence in the late '60s. That oversight is answered by this intelligent two-CD anthology of Martyn's rich catalog of albums for Island Records, which document his triple threat as a distinctive guitarist, soulful singer, and compelling writer and interpreter. Martyn's moody legacy includes winsome ("May You Never," covered by Eric Clapton) and harrowing ("Solid Air," his plea to friend Nick Drake) examples of abundant craft, notable for his rich vocals and spare, elegant arrangements featuring Richard Thompson, Danny Thompson, Phil Collins, and other better-known English musicians who savored Martyn's musical gifts.--Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
haunting, soulful, beautiful, exquisite.......2006-01-26
where did this guy come from? i happen to hear "one world" on satellite radio (thank you XM!) and immediately looked him up. martyn has the whiskey-soaked voice of (fellow scotsman) rod stewart with louie armstrong thrown in, the spiritual intensity of van morrison and the jazzy folk sound of joni mitchell.
i've never heard anything quite like it. all of his songs are melodic and interesting and some, like "one world," "small hours" are transcendent and as beautiful as any music i've ever heard. trust me -- check this guy out.
Sweet Honey.......2005-06-22
This is the place to savour John Martyn's mellifluous music. He has a warm voice, at times, searching at others, celebratory. There's an altogether sumptuous melding of folk and jazz in his phrasing and playing. He was into this blend probably prior to Joni Mitchell, and to my ears, he made a more peruasive, more resolved fusion of the genres. Why people prefer Nic Drake over Martyn is more to do with media hype than talent, I suggest. The domain of the solitary soul was never more eloquently charted than here on this great compilation. Pity,'Grace & Danger', didn't cut with the producers. But 'Sweet Little Mystery', 'Solid Air', and ,'Johnny Too Bad' are in tact and to be savoured like your favourite juice smoothy, through a long straw. An excellent investment!
Awesome.......2001-10-14
I am so pleased with this awesome collection of great music. It is truly the best of the best.
Better than..........2000-09-10
I came to JM after Clapton, Winwood, et al and he is so much better. The secret is that he is so consistent throughout the phases of his career that are sampled on this album. Even the likes of EC and Bowie have dimples on their pimples, but it seems that JM just keeps on doing the same great stuff over and over. And like Van Morrison, he is less mainstream and therefore seems to not be inflicted with superstar ego ambitions. A career to start to be appreciated...
Awesome double (acoustic) Martin at his best.......2000-06-09
Martin plays a mean acoustic guitar and his slap-style is second to none. On a lot of his later albums he plugs the guitar into a box ----that to my mind, takes away a lot of the intrinsic beauty. This album is pure guitar, cool lyrics and John's awesomely slurred vocal renditions. He is totally brill in concert---this album matches his energy there.

Customer Reviews:
Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

one of the best bands from the P.I........2007-06-29
eraserheads, in my opinion, is one of the top bands ever. this anthology is a collection of their songs from the past decade. i would recommend this to anyone who likes real tagalog songs because their work is always a filipino masterpiece.
pinoy alternative music pioneers.......2006-06-05
I give cheers and honors to the best Filipino band I knew since the early 90s! The E-heads are just magnificent in both terms: music & lyrics. This anthology is not really everything I expected, I wish that they added a couple more songs on disc 1 because I was a great fan from their earlier works. "Cutterpillow" & "Fruitcake" were the last albums that I had from this great band. I recommend this CD to all Pinoy music enthusiasts/collectors!
Best in Philippine Modern Music.......2006-03-24
The 'E-heads' as they are sometimes called, is one of the best Philippine rock has to offer. After over a decade of great original, funky and creative alternative pinoy music, they have unfortunately disbanded.
The album contains a sampling from their past albums. Song selection is pretty good. It has all of the best from their earlier material like 'Alapaap', 'With A Smile', 'Ligaya', 'Pare Ko' etc.. as well as their funky newer ones (Fruitcake, Julie Tearjerky) It also has the cover of the classic 'Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka" as well as a previously unreleased song 'Sa Tollgate'.
I would say that their songs would be a mix of radio friendly pop, very creative and original (not necessarily Filipino) alternative rock music, as well as some ballad-esque and sentimental ones. I also like that some of them are very Filipino in terms of the lyrics.
---------------
Actually, the lyrics are not necessary since this is a compilation album, and these are not new songs. But I would agree that since this IS an anthology album they should have put more goodies in the sleeve.

great music but what's with the insert?.......2006-02-14
The Eraserheads is the most important, most original, most groundbreaking band to come out of the Philippine music scene in decades. Enough said. If only for this you should get this anthology. It contains almost all of the Eraserheads' critical and commercial hits.
If you need more persuasion (huh?), consider this. Even long after the Eraserheads disbanded (it did in 2002), a band is yet to surpass its brilliant string of successes. Its wittily-crafted songs are OPM classics, so uniquely and heartachingly Pinoy they will live on for decades.
My only beef with the anthology is with the insert. The insert just contains the tracklisting and THAT'S IT! The back of the cd already lists the songs. But the insert doesn't even name who the Eraserheads are. Every true blue Pinoy who lived through the 1990s of course know that it's Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro, and Buddy Zabala. But the insert does not say that. It contains no personal notes from the E-heads, no essay, no anecdotal write up, no lyrics, no nothing. I mean, we know how inserts usually pander to the artist's ego, but this is the Eraserheads! It's an important band that pretty much led a decade (the 1990s) of Philippine music, a "pop-rock" group (a dismissive label, if you ask me) with a solid and indelible contribution to Pinoy culture. So what's with the dismal insert? The record producers should do something about this.
THE BEATLES OF THE PHILIPPINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-16
Ok....I know what your thinking, if you read this: good Lord, he's really comparing them to the fab four!!???!?! and the answer is yes. I will explain as we progress......
My wife is Pinay (for those of you that dont know that means Filipino), and after we got married, she let me listen to a compilation of Filipino artists; some R and B; some acoustic soul and then halfway through the CD, over the phone one night (before we were even married) she puts this one song on called "with a smile". she told me "this one's in english and ya might like it".
I LOVED IT and though WHO THE FU** ARE THESE GUYS AND WHY ARENT THEY SELLING MILLIONS OF RECORDS!!?!?!?!??!
that was only the beginning...
The Eraserheads, take their weird name from an even weirder mid 70s' David Lynch film of the same name. legend has it, that one day one of the band members opened up a magazene and saw that movie in some ad and it struck him as very original; so they took the name. I believe they all met in college and were all top of the class music students.........
soon after we married, I ordered the 2 disc set straight from the Philippines and was HOOKED! which is nuts because I dont speak fluent Tagalog but this band was the shining example of MUSIC BEING A UNIVERSAL; EVEN IF YA DONT SPEAK/UNDERSTAND THE LANGUAGE, good music is good music, period!!
what I found as I delved deeper into the two cds was one of the greatest bands EVER. from their emotional depth of their lyrics in EITHER language to the pop laden hooks, to their funky styling' and their heart, this band ROCKS, folks.
out of the 30 some odd songs, only 3 or 4 are in english but they are well worth the price. "with a smile" is one of the sweetest pop ballads ever written. "Julie tearjerky" has a nice 60's pop beat pattern and humourous lyrics. "Fruitcake" is a song EVERYBODY IN EVERY COUNTRY SHOULD LISTEN TOO. its take on so-called "Merry Christmas" makes ya wanna laugh and cry at the same time. ...."its the season for being happy....but the reason is dead and gone.."
the first time I heard that I couldnt believe it.....its sadly very true in these United States for many people.
but back to the point; the CD glides through from song to song some of my favorite Tagalog language songs have to be the opener, "Ligaya", which means joy/happiness, off of their first album. you can tell from listening, this band was going to be big, ushering in the new 90's generation of Pinoy rock. They effortlessly sing straight from the heart and add their own brand of humor for good measure.
"Minsan" is pretty good too; I like how it starts off in the intro slow; then picking up to a nice medium rock pace while the lead singer gives a passionate performance. "Masehag bahaghari" (emotional rainbow),is VERY NICE SONG. no one that Ive let listen to it has disagreed. its a very emotional song, up there with Crowded House in its music and lyrics.
as with all best of's there are a few clunkers; "Police Woman" is a weak foray into Reggae off of the "Run Barbie Run" movie soundtrack; the band ,I think, even appeared in the movie; it wasnt that good and it wasnt one of the bands' finer moments.
and another song called "Hokbu batchi?" that sounds very jazz/lounge-like with flutes. they just repeat the songs' title WAY TOO MANY TIMES. lol
for the most part I believe the two Cd's are chronilogical so you can listen and hear how the band was progressing...unfortunately towards its demise. Arguments within the band over musical direction and "where to go next" led to the lead singer, Ely, bailing on the band; then they replaced him with a chick singer which didnt make it any better (in my opinion) before the band, as it was, finally broke up for good.
but all in all, Eraserheads left a truly great legacy of music, for generations to come. DEFINATELY check this band out! its very worth it. you dont have to know the language, to love the music. and coming from a person/musician that cant usually get into music in a language I dont know, that says alot!
ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, check out RiverMaya, Bamboo, Sugarfree, Parokya ni Edgar to name a few......
