From the White Album to the end, the last days of the Beatles weren't smooth, which made the fact that they still produced some astonishing music all the more remarkable. In abbreviated form, "What's the New Mary Jane" is finally issued here, and proves underwhelming. For the rest of the set, it's largely down to outtakes and demos, but this time there isn't the same insight of the previous two volumes. Anthology 3 comes dangerously close to the sound of barrels being scraped. That said, it's the Beatles, and in whatever form, the music still shines brilliantly. --Chris Nickson

4 out of 5 stars Yes a notch below the other two volumes, but still a very good collection.......2007-01-12

The Beatles need no introduction when it comes to the elite of Rock/Pop music. When trying to "rank" the greatest artists of the Rock/Pop era, there is no doubt that the quartet from England ranks number one on just about every list. Going even further, the Beatles might be the top act in the history of modern music - among any genre. Some quarter-century after their breakup, the Beatles began to consider their place in history. This impetus played a key role in the release of the three volume, "Beatles Anthology" CD set and corresponding television documentary. One of the main attractions of this project was that it would bring the three surviving Beatles together for the first time since the famous breakup. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr would collaborate together on two unfinished John Lennon songs: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" - creating a "virtual" reunion among the four band members. This three volume set would not be an ordinary greatest hits collection - it would provide a historical retrospective to the band through rare and unreleased material. , "Beatles Anthology 3" covers the latter years of the Beatles focusing on the last three albums: "The White Album", "Abbey Road", and "Let It Be".

As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. One of the strengths of "Beatles Anthology Volume 1" was that there was material that was prefaced with spoken words by the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. These spoken words helped set the stage for the material to follow. Unfortunately like "Beatles Volume Anthology 2", "Beatles Anthology 3" does not have any spoken words with the exception of some comments that are on the demo cuts.

There is no doubt that Beatles fans will enjoy the content of Volume 3 but when you put it up against the content in the first two volumes, it does fall a little short. Like the first two volumes, Volume 3 does contain a 42 page booklet that helps to supplement the listening experience. This collection should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". Instead of studio cuts, this collection consists of outtakes, demos, and rarities that construct a terrific listening experience.

Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:

1) This is the only volume of the three volume Anthology collection that does not contain an original song. (The original song "Free as a Bird" is found on Volume 1 while "Real Love" is found on Volume 2.)

2) Like Volume 1 and 2, George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce every individual cut, he did produce each of the three volumes of the Anthology collection as a whole.

3) For the most part the first disc of Volume 3 revolves around "The White Album" and the associated recording sessions. The second disc revolves around the "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" albums. As many know, "Let It Be" was the final Beatles album to be released, but it was shelved and "Abbey Road" would actually be released before it. I found it amazing how much material did not make it on to "The White Album".

4) Much of the material could easily be mistaken for "Beatles Unplugged". Many are acoustic guitar cuts that were used as demos. While a lot of the material on Disc 1 falls into this category, there is some material on Disc 2 that also falls into the "unplugged" category. Most interesting was George Harrison's solo demo of "Something".

5) Like the previous two Anthology volumes, there are also some covers. Volume 1 would contain the most covers, but Volume 3 includes a three song medley ("Rip It Up", "Shake Rattle, and Roll", "Blue Suede Shoes"), "Mailman Bring Me No Blues", and "Ain't She Sweet". These are "throwbacks" to the Beatles' early days (as evidenced on Volume 1). I personally liked the cover of "Ain't She Sweet". "Come and Get It" is included, but this was an original McCartney composition later made famous by Badfinger.

6) This volume reflects a period where the Beatles were doing more songs as "narratives" and began to introduce "characters" in their songs. These "characters" provided a great avenue for the Beatles. Some of the more popular characters we hear about on Volume 3 include "Maxwell Edison", "Polythene Pam", "Mr. Mustard", "Desmond and Molly Jones", "Sexy Sadie", "Jude", "Rocky Raccoon", and "Mary Jane".

7) There aren't as many alternate takes as I would have liked to have seen. "Glass Onion" is the only song we are given multiple takes on. Volume 2 did a much better at the multiple outtakes in showing how the song developed.

8) Despite the fact that this was the time the Beatles were coming apart at the scenes, you wouldn't seem to know it from these cuts. There are plenty of examples of the members laughing and joking around.

9) There is a shorter and stripped down version of "Hey Jude". It isn't as good as the final product, but it still is interesting to hear. I'd also put "Something" in the same category.

10) While some of the material on this version is unfinished or interrupted by spoken words, it is what adds to the charm of the collection. I heard a disc-jockey in "New York" so impressed with this collection as he said "...and this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.

This is a good collection. However, when you compare this to Volumes 1 and 2, it just isn't as strong overall. This is not a knock on Volume 3 - just a testament to how strong Volumes 1 and 2 are. Overall, this is still a very good collection and one Beatles fans will surely want in their collection. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Sensational End.......2006-12-05

This is remarkable. The third and final volume of the Anthology series reveals more previously unheard music from the greatest band of all time. This collection may prove to be the most interesting to casual fans. The first volume shared a lot of home recordings and live stuff that really only hardcore collectors would want. The second volume, while definately having value to hardcore fans, focuses again on live performances and studio cuts that the casual listener might not see the need for. On this third set, however, we hear many acoustic demos and outtakes that are more than listenable for the average fan. The material is late enough and all studio produced that it is quite good quality that all fans can equally enjoy it. And the beauty is, there is still enough to keep us die hard fans happy, too. The following are my personal favorites:

*Helter Skelter - nice bluesy mix.
*While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George on acoustic, very nice.
*The Long and Winding Road - stringless.
*Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Paul screws up third verse, fantastic.
*Something - again, George only on acoustic, and with alternate lyrics.

This is a beautiful set with something for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Anthology 3.......2006-10-29

Anthology 3 is a treat for any Beatles fan. You get to hear some of your favorite songs as they are being born along with studio cuts that allow a glimpse into this band's creative process.

4 out of 5 stars When I grow up, I'll be a singer........2006-07-15

This was the final volume of the Beatles Anthology series of rarities. It's a two disc set, with Disc One featuring "White Album" outtakes and Disc Two featuring "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" rarities. A lot of this is demos or alternate versions of previously released songs, althought there are a few unreleased songs here. Of course, being the Beatles, most of it is very good, if not quite as good as the "official" versions of these songs. This is a must get for all Beatlemaniacs, although new Beatles fans should start with their regular albums before getting this.

4 out of 5 stars The third of three.......2005-11-05

Anthology three as with one and two also has outakes and unfinished songs.
I will only hit the highlights or songs of note.
You hear 3 unfinished songs from side two of the album (back when we still had vinyl).
Those songs are Mean Mr. Mustard, Polythene Pam and She came in thru the Bathroom Window. You hear John playing Mean Mr Mustard on an acoustic guitar with an altered tuning.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps is nothing like the vesion on the White Album with Eric Clapton doing the lead guitar. This version is an acoustic version and has a charm of its own.
Rocky Racoon is still unfinished and has verses that were later dropped. Something has George Harrison playing the song solo without the band and again he uses extra lyrics that were later dropped on Abbey Road.
You also hear Paul doing Teddy Boy that appeared on his first solo album. You also hear a very early version of George Harrison doing the title song from his first solo LP, All Things Must Pass. So you even get a little bit of a preview of what was yet to come.
Another song of note is the version of Come and Get It which was later recorded by Badfinger. As I said these are just the highlights, you need to give this a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15

This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-

This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.

1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.

Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.

The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.

What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Legal Stuff Apart.......2007-04-21

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

5 out of 5 stars Spirited playing of fine compositions.......2007-07-07

This Revueltas anthology is very well played by first class orchestras. The selections by Mata and de la Fuente are particularly played with spirit and verve.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Compositions Brilliantly Performed.......2007-05-03

If you enjoy Bartok & Stravinsky, you will adore Revueltas. Among the 15 works are two versions of sensemaya plus Cuauhnahuac and La Noche de los Mayas, all richly evocative of the ancient Mayan culture which underlies that of Mexico - bold tributes to proud traditions not unlike the musical paintings of the Caucasus peoples rendered by Khachaturian. The music of Revueltas deserves much wider performance in the world, but probably will not be often heard due to its technical complexity and the need for specialized native instruments for some of the passages. At least Leopold Stokowski recognized the brilliance of this spectacular work.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski's Sensemaya.......2005-10-10

Great, great release. One of the reviews here (by "127") said that the Stokowski version of Sensemaya was interesting "historically but not musically" and I just wanted to strongly disagree with that. Leopold Stokowski has the orchestra playing in a different time-signature than the composer wrote! The piece is written mostly in 7 but this performance seems to have put the whole thing into 4 (it's probably more complicated than that but you get the idea) and the resulting performance is even more hectic and bombastic than the other recorded version of Sensemaya on the same CD. I don't know why Stokowski did this, but this performance is the most unique I've heard (of the piece.) Whether or not this is a "good" thing I don't want to get into but the recording is definitely very interesting and worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09

Unlike many people I think, I've been a fan of Revueltas since I was quite young...I first heard Sensemaya at the age of 12 and was blown away. Unfortunately, for years most of his music was rather hard to find...darn near impossible actually. However, the composer has recently picked up a number of higher profile champions (including Esa Pekka Salonen) and a spate of rereleases during his Centennial a few years ago. Such a rediscover is long overdue!

This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!

The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.

The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.

The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.

Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract but deep........2003-02-05

I've got this cd when I first heard of this composer. He is the biggest composer that Mexico has had to offer to the classical music scene. Mexico has a variety of notable composers such as Chavez but none of them match Revueltas impact on the scene.

This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.

The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.

The sleeve is a little short on personnel details, but the music is top notch. A fine anthology of Levy's bluesy outings with all sorts of collaborators, from the jazz, blues and funk worlds. A great overview of Ron Levy's grooves, and definitely one to get.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Carillonneur.......2006-08-19

Aside from the ever-popular "Musical Snuffbox," recordings of the piano music of Lyadov are rather rare. I sought this recording out specifically because I wanted a recording of the "Ballade: From Olden Times," which I am attempting to transcribe for performance on the carillon. I knew the piece already from recordings of orchestrated versions. Some of the pieces on this recording are hard indeed to find, and the principal value of this recording is the repertoire itself. The playing is capable enough, though the recorded sound is, to my ear, a bit clunky. How much is due to the piano involved and how much is due to the technical matters of the recording itself I couldn't say, but the sound didn't have the brightness or resonance of the other Lyadov piano recording Amazon carries (Hyperion label). Regarding the performance of the Ballade itself, I personally didn't care for the performer's decision to play the "central" theme (in 5/4 time, over descending scale figures in the bass) in a free, virtuosic manner. To me, that puts too much emphasis on the scale figuration, detracting from the actual melody above. There is enough playfulness built into the 5/4 time that I think that section would benefit from a more straightforward rendition. Elsewhere, the performer's interpretive sensitivity works well.

If you're looking for a sonically sumptuous recording of Lyadov's music, this isn't it. Buy the Hyperion recording instead. If you are looking for a recording of a particular piece that you can't find elsewhere, that's a good enough reason to buy it. Lyadov's music doesn't usually stand out as having a unique (flavor) setting it apart from the work of other late romantic composers, though some of his music is intended to represent stories from Russian folklore. It is attractive music, though, and it stands up to comparison with many of the compositions of Chopin, Brahms, and others of the period.

5 out of 5 stars "She Belongs To Me" and hopefully you too soon!.......2007-06-05

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

As a fanatical collector of Emerson, Lake, & Palmer material I can tell you first hand how the Nice should have gotten more accolades and into more record collections. When people discuss the birth of progressive rock they may talk about the Soft Machine or the brilliant second album by the Moody Blues ("Days Of Future Passed"). Factual history shows the Nice were formed and rehearsing music the same time the Moody Blues entered the studio for "Days Of Future Passed" (May 1967).

The Nice did sell their share of vinyl but it should have been in greater quantities. Even though many would discover the music after the fact as ELP's stellar albums and stage shows had the masses take note of the bands previous musical activities. Sometimes the only representation was a greatest hits package. While it gave an introduction to what the Nice were capable of, you need to fully digest the original recordings.

"Here Come the Nice: The Immediate Anthology", enables you to experience the first three releases- "The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack", "Ars Longa Vita Brevis", and "The Nice." As an added bonus you'll get to feast on previously unreleased live recordings, demos, alternates, etc. On the first record the band had four pieces, Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson on bass and vocals, Brian Davison on drums, and Davy O'List on guitar and vocals. Davy and Keith didn't always see eye to eye and the band would soon become a trio.

During the festivities you most likely will recognize the definitive versions of "Rondo" and "America" but there is a plethora of additional genius. "Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" is mesmerizing in capturing a bit of psychedelia, pop, and progressive in a short time span, "Cry of Eugene" is spellbinding in the way it attacks the mind with ferocious sounds, "Brandenburger" gives an insight to Keith Emerson's magic touch on any piano or keyboard, Tim Hardin's "Hang On To A Dream" is hauntingly arranged, and "Diary Of An Empty Day" fits into the neighborhood of "Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack."

These are only a handful of the standouts. Be prepared to explore something nice, very nice.

Enjoy the music and be well,
    Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps too much Nice.......2007-02-19

It was great to revisit some of the classic recordings. Everything else just seemed like overkill. How many different versions of America does any one listener really need? Apparently, judging by this set, there's always one more that they can pull out. Thank god for the skip track button on my steering wheel.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money for Keith Emerson fans.......2007-02-14

The rarities included in this box set overcome the one or two shortcomings.

    PROS:
    1. The Sampler for the Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack LP is an extremely rare radio promo for the great 1967 first album.

    2. America : I) America/II) Second Amendment [Live Newcastle '68] is a rare live track that contains Davy O'List who is obviously on something here as he barely gets through the beggining of the number and is out of sync with the rest of the band, no wonder he was fired soon after this live recording.

    3. Pathetique Symphony 4th [Live Fairfields Hall '69]- They had already released the Pathetique Symphony movement 3, this is the rarely performed movement 4 with Lee Jacksons eerie narration.

    CONS:
    1. single 4 minute version of the Brandenburger is right after the long version of ARS LONGA Vita Brevis(brandenburger suite) which is a little redundant, they should of placed it on the 3rd rarities disc.

    2. Between Rondo "69" & She Belongs to Me (Live at Fillmore East, New York)there is an awful edit not heard on the original record "everything as nice as mother makes it" Keith originally says "this is a song by Bob Dylan call She Belongs to me" here he says "this is a song by Bo.......then the song starts abruptly,a bad edit of a classic live show from the Fillmore.

On a positive note, IF you get this, Five Bridges and Elegy, you'll have a complete Nice collection.

5 out of 5 stars specially made for The Nice fans!.......2006-11-04

In this compilation you will find everything you know about the Nice...and more!
Great presentation and better compilation of studio and live recordings.

3 out of 5 stars More nice than necessary..........2005-03-14

Most people have either never heard of the Nice or know them as the band Keith Emerson was in before Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Too bad. While hardly in the first rank of progressive rock bands, the Nice put out several interesting songs in their relatively short career.

However, three cds worth of Nice material is more than any but the most fanatical fans would want to hear - and, given the massive amount of material on the three cds, there is at least one essential tune missing - the live verson of "America" that appeared on "Keith Emerson With the Nice". Why it is not included is a mystery - the live version that is presented, taken from a 1968 concert in Newcastle, is not nearly as good.

So, what is worthwhile on these three cds...

Disk 1 - "Rondo", and a studio version of "America"...and not much else - though fans of really bad songs have "Daddy Where Did I Come From" and "Happy Freuds" to amuse them.

Disk 2 - Most of the second half of the disk, "Azrael Revisited", Hang on to a Dream", Diary of an Empty Day", and the two live cuts, "Rondo-69" and "She Belongs to Me". The last tune, a cover of the Dylan song (natch) is truly amazing - it includes a mid-song jam that seems to go in several different directions before suddenly being pulled back together, and is a highlight of the collection.

Disk 3 - The live "America" and "Rondo" from a 1968 Newcastle concert are good (though as noted above there is at least one better live version of "America"). After that, mostly mediocre songs, although the "alternative stereo" version of "America" is okay.

If you don't mind spending a lot of money for a 3 cd set, buy this collection, boil it down to one cds worth of really good music, and then add a star...

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Stunning, but one annoying flaw.......2006-03-17

The singing is flawless and deeply moving.

But why does track 13 - Ubi Caritas - insist on starting AFTER the music has already begun. When approached from number 12, it works fine. But to cue the thing (which is why I bought this CD), you have to BACK UP to hear the song from the beginning.

I thought it was just my CD or my player - but NO, the flaw is on this web page too.

Still, this is a treasured CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tribute.......2005-08-06

This album from one of the world's greatest organists, John Scott, is one of the most beautiful musical tributes to those who lost their lives in 9/11. The Nunc Dimittis is one of the most haunting versons of this traditional prayer ever written.
