Classic Queen
Editorial Reviews

This is an excellent collection of one of the most popular and influential rock bands of all time, though it omits "We Are the Champions" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" (these, however, can be found on the Greatest Hits album, which together with Classic Queen gets you a comprehensive selection of their work). There's some great stuff here, including rockers like "Hammer to Fall," "Stone Cold Crazy," "I Want It All," "Headlong," and the hilarious "Tie Your Mother Down." There's also a good sampling of ballads, performed with an energy and sincerity that sets them apart: "Who Wants to Live Forever" is sorrowfully beautiful, and "The Show Must Go On" is only echoed by songs like Queensryche's "Is There Anybody Listening." Rounding things off is a fine selection of the unclassifiable, such as "Under Pressure," "I'm Going Slightly Mad," and "Radio Ga Ga." --Genevieve Williams

ALONG WITH VOLUME II, THIS IS THE GREATEST QUEEN COMPILATION ALBUM EVER. PART 1 OF 2. .......2007-05-09
Before I begin my review, I would like to invite all of you to read the Blog that Kevin Johns and I have set up for your Rock n' Roll reading pleasure which hopefully suits your musical needs and tastes. It is called "FOREVER IN ROCK, THE JOHN LOPEZ REVIEWS WRAP UP." I deeply hope that all of you will read it, it is after all, for all of you. Hope to hear from you soon. Take care. Forever in Rock, John L.
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" by one of Rock's all-time greatest legendary bands ever. I give you one on England's pride and joy's and one of Britain's favorite sons, Q-U-E-E-N! "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Hollywood Records label which is distributed by Elektra Entertainment, a division of Warner Communications Inc. This review is Part 1 of 2. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
QUEEN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic Rock anthems ever. QUEEN would also be well known the world over for having and containing perhaps, one of Rock's most flamboyant and charismatic lead singers and frontmen ever. Thats right, I'm talking about the late great Farrokh Bulsara A.K.A. Freddie Mercury. When Mercury met up and joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, the stage would forever be set and QUEEN would be born to thrill and Rock. From that point on, it was full speed ahead, and with it, a long string of great albums and hit songs that would follow. QUEEN would soon gain a reputation through the years for being a great band that put on a great live show thanks to the legendary frontman Freddie Mercury. Brian May would also make the best guitarist polls in all of the Rock magazines. "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" would be the result of the many hit songs that QUEEN would write and record throught the years. Along with Volume II, "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" serves as one of the many contributions, accomplishments and achievements in QUEEN'S whole entire career. Which brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for you today. In my opinion, "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals. "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of QUEEN to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. "CLASSIC QUEEN - VOLUME I" from 1992 begins with the beautiful uplifting hard Rock anthem "A Kind Of Magic," one of the most powerful and saddest hard Rock Opera's ever written, "Bohemian Rhapsody," the ultimate duet with David Bowie, the Rocker of all Rockers, "Under Pressure," the forever blistering hard a*s Rocker "Hammer To Fall," the speedy and energetic hard Rocker "Stone Cold Crazy," the beautifully slow synthesized song "One Year Of Love," the synthesized Rocker with a message, "Radio Ga Ga," the groundbreaking and daring Rocker that we can all relate to, "I'm Going Slightly Mad," the slow killer hard Rocker "I Want It All," one of the many ultimate hard Rock anthems, "Tie Your Mother Down," the beautiful Rock Opera "The Miracle," the forever beautifully slow smooth Rock anthem "These Are The Days Of Our Lives," the forever blistering hard Rock anthem "One Vision," the breathtaking hard Rock Opera "Keep Yourself Alive," the amazing hard Rocker "Headlong," the beautifully slow synthesized and orchestrated anthem "Who Wants To Live Forever" and the beautifully slow synthesized anthem with a message, "The Show Must Go On." May I also add that the late great Freddie Mercury's blistering lead vocals were sizzlin' red hot and burning on fire while laying down the tracks for all of these legendary hit songs. I would also like to commend Brian May for his merciless guitar riffs and licks during the recordings of these legendary hit songs. QUEEN'S rhythm section comprising of bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor were right on it and hitting their marks perfectly. Freddie's lead vocals and extremely high vocal ranges would take QUEEN'S breathtaking music to another level unimagined. WELL DONE!
Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard QUEEN fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of QUEEN, this volume I album along with volume II is not a bad place to start. I highly suggest purchasing both volumes of these legendary greatest hits compilation albums. You can do all of your researching and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. Doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal QUEEN music collection. If you ever get a chance, buy both volumes of these albums, you'll be happy and satisfied that you did.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary volume I compilation album along with volume II to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. Without a doubt, this legendary treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This legendary album is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.
In closing, QUEEN would be riding high upon the release of all of these legendary hit songs along with volume II. You would almost think that everything was well in QUEEN'S world. In 1991, the Rock n' Roll world as well as the whole world, would be shocked and shook to its very foundations upon hearing the sad news that Freddie Mercury was dying of the AIDS virus. Very shortly after, on 24 November 1991, almost three months after his 45th Birthday, Farrokh Bulsara, known the world over as Freddie Mercury, would die from AIDS. What a sad tragedy. Freddie Mercury would be the first Rock n' Roller to not only die from the AIDS virus, but to bring the attention and awareness to the AIDS virus to the whole world in general just like legendary actor Rock Hudson did in the mid 1980's. But how could Freddie Mercury die when QUEEN was still riding high bigger than ever and in their prime? In the short years that Freddie mercury lived and QUEEN being together, QUEEN gave us a lifetime's worth of great Rock n' Roll music. Knowing this, QUEEN would shortly meet their date with destiny by receiving the highest ultimate honor possible, by being inducted as members into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. With this in mind, QUEEN has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. But please keep in mind that the QUEEN legend and legacy does not end here. If anything, IT IS ONLY JUST THE BEGINNING. Although Freddie Mercury is irreplaceable, QUEEN has successfully had brief reunions with George Michael and the most recent with Paul Rodgers to highly critically acclaim. I truly believe that Michael and Rodgers would be the first to tell you that Freddie Mercury is irreplaceable. I don't think that ready Freddie would have wanted it any other way. There would also be new tales and stories in the QUEEN and Freddie Mercury legend that would still need to be told and written. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and glued to your computer and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. So here's to you late great Freddie, Brian, John, Roger, and yes, George and Paul. Thanks for the many great memories. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more or am I wrong? FREDDIE MERCURY LIVES! Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. QUEEN FOREVER! R.I.P. FARROKH BULSARA A.K.A. FREDDIE MERCURY, Born 5 September 1946, Died 24 November 1991 at age 45. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Rock Royalty's "Other" Greatest Hits Album.......2007-03-03
For those of you like me who bought Queen's "Greatest Hits" album and couldn't believe that songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Hammer To Fall" didn't make the cut, sigh with relief as you peruse the track list for "Classic Queen." It features all of the songs that should have been on "Greatest Hits" and the two albums can now be purchased together for about the same price as purchasing them separately would cost. Either way, you're definitely going to need to get your hands on both of them if you want a solid collection of Queen's best songs.
Queen was hard to categorize. Granted, most people instantly stick them in the classic rock boat, which isn't a bad thing, but they reach much farther than that. This album features heavy rockers such as "Hammer To Fall" and "Stone Cold Crazy," but it also highlights pop-rockers such as "It's A Kind Of Magic" and the David Bowie compilation, "Under Pressure." Other highlights include "Radio Ga Ga," "Who Wants To Live Forever," and "Tie Your Mother Down." My personal favorites include "Hammer To Fall" and "I Want It All."
Overall, this is a wonderful album to have. Coupled with "Greatest Hits," it makes for a solid catalogue of Queen's best music. Queen was one of a kind and deserves all of the accolades it has received over the years. I highly recommend you get this album and "Greatest Hits" together.
A Testament to rock at it's best.......2006-11-26
This an excellent compilation featuring the whole range of talents of the greatest rock band in history.
A range from rockers to ballads , and an excellent introduction to the band.
The album has a good flow and a good sample of Queen's brilliance.
It's A Kind of Magic is a great rock-pop song , a real feel-good hit.
The classic rock-opera masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody which was voted the greatest song of all time in the United Kingdom needs no introduction but no Queen compilation album is complete without it.
And then of course, Queen's fantastic collaboration with David Bowie: Under Pressure - A great all-time classic.
Hammer To Fall is a pop hit in the typical style of Queen's 80's music.
The fast paced rocker Stone Cold Crazy is a fantastic hard rocker and a good example of 70's Queen rock.
I'm Going Slightly Mad is a zany and amusing hit from Queen's later work.
I Want It All is another of Queen's later works and has quite a powerful and lively quality.
Tie Your Mother Down is grand 70's hard rocker and quite humorous
These Are The Days Of Our Lives is a good contemplative and light pop hit
One Vision is an anthemic and synthesized hit from 1986 and one of queen's better 80's works
Keep Yourself Alive is from Queen's first album and one of my very favourite Queen songs for certs.A perfect example of rock at it's best.
Who Wants To Live Forever is a sad ballad of longing and immortality from the album A Kind of Magic amd The Show Must Go On is one of Queen's last hits and a testament to the band.
Perfect for the Queen Newbie.......2006-07-01
This was my first full length Queen purchase. Back in 1992 I used to pop it into my cassette walkman (remember those?) and listen all night, when I was doing dishes, doing homework, etc. I never tired of it. I am still not tired of it.
Show Must Go On is one of their absolute best songs and is not very known. For that reason, I love how it has a place on this collection. Tie Your Mother Down is the full version, by the way. The intro music on "Races" is just that, not a part of Tie Your Mother Down. Every song is a gem and you will awed and amazed at the versatility of this band through the years.
Jump off here into the lake of Queen fandom; you will not regret it ever!
Classic Queen .......2006-05-17
I have listened to queen ever since I was a kid. There music is so kinetic and inspiring. Freddie Mercury had a voice that couldn't be beaten. This album is one of my favorites. It contains a great selection of their best stuff, from "Bohemian Rhapsody" to "These are the Days of Our Lives", early and new. I also believe Queen to be highly underated. I rarely hear them on the radio and many people I have talked to can only think of "We will Rock You" when I ask them if they have heard of Queen.
I believe anyone interested in Queen should start here. You can't go wrong with Classic Queen.

Wynton Marsalis may not have an easily recognizable or even particularly handsome tone, but this erstwhile jazz trumpeter is an amazing virtuoso with a fine sense of classical style. If you've never owned/heard any of his classical CDs, and you love (mostly baroque) trumpet music, this compilation--a sort of "greatest hits"--is for you. From such cruddy, sensationalistic works as Carnival of Venice to the glories of Haydn's E-Flat Concerto, this is grand entertainment. Marsalis is joined by Kathleen Battle in an exciting version of Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," and the treat there is doubled. A fine piece by Hovhaness for trumpet and organ, never before released, is another surprise. Come listen to the endless, seemingly casual roulades that come out of this guy's trumpet--they'll wake you right up. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Classic Wynton.......2007-07-11
Classic! What else is there to say? As an introduction to the other, many classic recordings of this superbly talented trumpeter, it is as good a guide as possible.
amazing.......2006-10-31
Classic Wynton is the most glorious display of musicianship I have ever heard. No other trumpet player even comes close to Wynton. Don't listen to anything the editorial review says though, it must have been written by a complete ignoramus. Wynton Marsalis not having a clear or recognizable tone? Please...That's like saying Kobe Bryant isn't a good shooter. I can't believe that garbage is on a credible site such as Amazon.
Heard this with NEW appreication................2006-09-07
This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). This awakened his awareness of trumpet music where he now loves to listen to one of his Baby Einstein cd's in the car. Specifically, he told his mother "louder" when the trumpet piece was played - repetetively.
Wynton's the best.......2006-03-17
I'm not a professional musician and don't have a trained ear but Wynton Marsalis has provided me with a very delightful hour of extremely good music.
Classic Wynton--brilliant, clear trumpet renditions.......2006-02-25
For anyone who loves trumpet music as I do, this album is a must. Wynton Marsalis has mastered twenty all-time favorite pieces with such brilliance, that no other trumpeteer comes near by comparison. Opening with J. Clarke's, The King's March, Wynton proceeds to favor listeners with such baroque favorites as Purcell's Entrada from "The Indian Queen," J. Clark's The Prince of Denmark's March and J. Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary. Fantastic selections from Bach, Mozart, and Haydn follow, with the album also including such delightful listening as The Last Rose of Summer, Carnival of Venisee, and Flight of the Bumblebee. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

Sounds GREAT..........2006-11-16
I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...

This compilation of previous releases is clearly intended to include something for everybody and to offer an overview of Kathleen Battle's wide, varied repertoire. The result is a motley assortment of music sacred and profane, Baroque, classical and romantic, Spanish and American folksongs, and jazz. It is Battle's radiant, impeccably produced voice, which sheds a glow over every note she sings, and her effortless coloratura and serene expressiveness that provide the unifying, and most rewarding, element.
Four new recordings sound just as glorious as those she made years ago. One is the famous aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi performed with piano--a strange misfit among all the arias with orchestra. Wynton Marsalis plays Bach and Handel brilliantly, but sounds too loud and prominent. And despite some baroque ornamentation, he plays in a style so different from hers that the two hardly seem to be performing the same piece. The Orchestra of St. Luke's plays beautifully; an anonymous orchestra under Robert Sadin is competent but too matter-of-fact. A mournful, repetitive duet with Jessye Norman against a background of unearthly noises from Vangelis's Mythodea sounds like an angelic plea for mercy.
In the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel, Battle captures just the right blend of childlike wonder and heavenly bliss. Of the jazz numbers, one by Duke Ellington is lovely, but Dvorák would have been quite surprised by the arrangement of the Largo from his "New World" Symphony. However, the tonality is right, and Battle sings the melody so beautifully that she almost redeems it. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Eh..........2006-12-10
Kathleen Battle is admirable, with her many recordings and her many performances across the country. But, I cannot say that I adore her voice. Yes, she may be a soprano, but her voice is not top of my list. Her technique is flawed, and her voice lacks any depth or richness. When I listen to her voice, it sounds so empty. Singers like Sumi Jo (my favorite of all) or Renee Fleming are a much better choice when it comes to rich tone and beautiful technique.
The vocal phenomenon that is Kathleen Battle.......2003-11-18
An excellent compilation of some of Miss Battle's greatest work. Of course, it would have been great if more of her operatic literature was included, but to have the opportunity to hear anything from Miss Battle is heaven.
Bravissima Diva!!!!.......2002-07-03
I must comment on the preceeding review which has nothing to do with the calibur of this CD nor of the artist. And just a touch on that whole Brevard "incident", there were two performances one of which came off without a fault...but I too digress. This CD is a plethera of what endures Kathleen Battle to us all...her diversity. It is true that none of her signature operatic roles appear in this mini compilation but what is given more than accomodates. In 18 selections she covers Spirituals, Oratorio, Jazz, Afro-Cuban/Brazilian influenced melodies, cantata's and a symphony all with miraculous ease. It is also true that this is in many ways a best of...and chances are you'll already have most of these pieces, but Classic Kathleen Battle is Worth Buying simply for the four new selections and accompanying art of the set. The pictorial art included in this CD is worthy of gallery display! A standing testament of her vocal beauty and artist superlatives...this is a CD that you don't want to pass up!
Battle shows her true colors yet again.......2002-06-27
I have followed Ms. Battle's career for a number of years and have always loved the clarity and purity of her voice--no doubt she is a tremendous talent. Several years ago I saw her give a stunning concert at UNC-Chapel Hill and was blown away at the thrill of finally experiencing her voice live. I always thought it unfortunate that so many negative stories about her flourished and subsequently found myself coming to her defense in conversation with others. Last summer I had tickets to see her sing at Brevard Music Center in the mountains of North Carolina. Several nights prior to this performance, my 20-year-old nephew was killed in a car accident. I decided to go ahead with my plans and attend the concert, thinking it would be a sort of balm for my soul after living through this terrible experience of losing someone I loved. Immediately after my nephew's funeral I left my family behind and drove the five hours to the concert venue. Needless to say I had incredibly high hopes for this concert and its potential to help heal my wounds. Long story short, Ms. Battle behaved in the most unprofessional manner I have ever witnessed and refused to perform the program as planned. What little she did offer to the audience was mediocre at best. A packed house of patrons was left stunned and dismayed at what they'd just witnessed. So, Ms. Battle, you proved to me in a very personal way that all the stories are true and you have serious issues. I will not be buying your recordings in the future and I currently have about 20 that are now worthless to me.
Praiseworthy, but a limited perspective.......2002-06-04
CLASSIC KATHLEEN BATTLE: A PORTRAIT is limited in its perspective in the sense that this is a compilation of only SONY Classical recordings from their catalog. There are no Deutsche Grammophon or Angel/EMI performances represented here. A "portrait" of Miss Battle would have rightly included some of these wonderful and musical interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Villa-Lobos, Gounod, and Bach among others. Of course paying the license fees from the other 2 labels wouldn't be cost-efficient from a record company's standpoint. How wonderful this would've been if they'd all cooperated on a box set of her recordings, which would show Miss Battle's superlative musicality in not only Italian and French, but also her great wit and charm in the English language (her Purcell and Dowland are not to be missed!)
In any case there are several magical performances to be found here:
Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" w/piano; Dormi, Jesu; Cancion de Cuna, Fix Me Jesus, Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss"; Angels Watching Over Me; and the enchanting song (the German title is too long for me to remember--it's from the Das Knaben Wunderhorn cycle) from Mahler's 4th Symphony.
For any Kathleen Battle fan, this is a nice selection of her works, but only a 2-dimensional portrait at best. Certainly not Miss Battle's fault, as she graces the listener with no less than FOUR new recordings on this album.
Once again her silvery tones and superb musicality are a wonderful gift to us!
Thank you, and Bravo many times over....

Album Description
Bessie Smith was not the first to record a blues - indeed her early career was not even as a blues singer - yet she stands astride the genre like a colossus. As well as her fame as an entertainer, she was a formidable human being. She simply refused to recognise opposition - incredibly, one night in 1927, she faced down the feared Ku Klux Klan. She was born poor in 1894, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both parents died while Bessie was still young and she was raised by her older sister, Viola. To augment Viola's meagre earnings as a laundress, Bessie and her older brother Clarence took to the streets as entertainers. In time, Bessie obtained regular work as a dancer and chorus girl. By 1921, when she was living in Philadelphia, Bessie was a star. She had several unsuccessful tests for recording companies. In February 1923, after she'd moved to New York, Columbia gave her a chance. Her first cuts, made on February 15th, are lost. However, the next day she recorded Gulf Coast Blues and Down Hearted Blues with piano backing by Clarence Williams, who had written the former. This combination was released as Bessie's first disc. It sold 750,000. All her skills are on display. Initially, Gulf Coast was the A-side, but it was the honesty and clarity of Down Hearted that people flocked to buy. Soon after her recording debut, Bessie and new husband, Jack Gee, discovered that she was signed not to Columbia, but to Clarence Williams, who was appropriating half Bessie's recording fee. The angry pair confronted Williams, who released Bessie from her contract. With Williams temporarily out of favour, a new piano accompanist was needed. Fletcher Henderson stepped in. He's featured on ten sides here and shows himself to be as self-effacing, if a little subtler, than Williams. By the end of June, with a decent supply of material in the can, Walker released Bessie for a Southern tour. Her hit record had preceded her and the shows were sell-outs. During this tour, Bessie also discovered the emerging power of radio. Most shows were then transmitted `live' so, while earning a fee for performing, she promoted her records. The final two cuts on CD:A feature Bessie duetting with fellow blues singer Clara Smith. Bessie generally kept other blueswomen at bay, but Clara was an exception. Her voice here is plaintive and flexible, but Bessie dominates. Having mainly confined her to piano accompaniment, Columbia now began adding extra instruments. The first two tracks on CD:B, have the singer in the company of a decent clarinettist and pianist. Presumably Fletcher Henderson was needed elsewhere because he was back the next day. From Bessie's January 1924 sides, Frosty Mornin' Blues is surely a gem - its more traditional blues instrumentation, with Harry Reser on guitar, draws a performance of feeling from Bessie - once she and Reser accommodate to to the slow rhythm. Reser returned to help Bessie deliver an ironic interpretation of Easy Come Easy Go Blues. After this session, it was back to live work in Nashville. She was popular with both white and black audiences in the south, although they were, of course, segregated. Other black performers seem to have modified their acts for whites, cleaning them up if necessary. Not Bessie. She was in the vanguard of a generation of black performers which wouldn't conform to the `yassuh' stereotype.

Wondering about the remastering........2007-06-30
I guess I'm curious if JSP did their own transfers, or, as they do with some frequency these days, ripped off transfers from other companies. Frog Records has a tremendous Complete Bessie Smith series, featuring wonderful remasterings by J.R.T. Davies. But those are nearly $20 per cd. If they stole these versions, that might explain the reports of good sound....because the old Columbia cds are absolutely awful sonically.
Carmel's opinion.......2007-05-13
Excellent sound quality of the earlier recordings of the most important of all blues singers.
BESSIE SMITH-QUEEN OF THE BLUES. VOL 1........2007-05-09
AMAZON IS ONE OF VERY FEW OUTLETS THAT SELL CD'S ETC.FROM SOME OF THE OLD
BUT NOT FAMOUS ARTISTS, THAT MADE MUSIC WHAT IT IS TODAY. THIS ARTIST WAS AS THE TITLE IMPLIES, A BLUES SINGER FROM THE 1920'S WHO UNFORTUNATELY DIED VERY YOUNG BY TODAYS STANDARDS,BUT WHO PIONEERED FINE MUSIC. I WAS
ONLY INTRODUCED TO BESSIE BY AN OLD FRIEND RECENTLY, AND I GOT ONTO THE WEB TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER. THIS CD REPRESENTS EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT 'THE BLUES' AND HAS BEEN REMASTERED PERFECTLY. ON THIS CD ACCOMPANYING BESSIE ARE OTHER ARTISTS INCLUDING LOUIS ARMSTRONG. FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS 'THE BLUES' THIS IS A MUST.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2004-05-11
I've been visiting this box-set often since picking it up a few months ago. Previous to this, I only had one Memphis Minnie disc, so the vast majority of this box was new to me. Memphis Minnie is truly one of the giants of pre-war blues, yet she seems to be somewhat forgotten. Her name doesn't often seem to roll off the tongues of even many of the people who have gotten beyond just Robert Johnson. Hopefully this low priced yet high quality collection will help fix that situation.
I think I have ten of these great JSP boxes so far, and this is one of the very best.
In the majority of current blues, lyrics are little more than an after thought. Just something to play a supporting role to the trite guitar wankery. The pre-war era was when blues lyrics actually had something to say, and Minnie's lyrics are an excellent window into not only herself, but also into the flipside of life (of that era) and blues... life and blues from the female perspective. Minnie would seem to be as rough and tumble as any of her male counterparts.
Guitaristically, the first major glimpse we get into her playing comes on Mister Tango Blues. Throughout this box it strikes me that Minnie may well have been a more influential guitarist than many of the more famous males of her time. She does things you can still hear people doing today. A compliment to Minnie, but yet another comment on the stale state of most blues today.
One of the things that makes this entire box such a joy is that Minnie's music is comprised of many different styles. Whereas someone like Blind Lemon Jefferson only really did a handful of different things and everything he did fell into those categories, Minnie does everything from low-down blues to more mournful songs illustrating the female perspective, to jaunty, goofily fun tunes, jugband stuff, etc...
If you're only interested in hearing her do When The Levee Breaks, this isn't the set for you, as it's not here. I e-mailed JSP before this box was released and they told me that it would be included on a Kansas Joe box instead. Considering how many Minnie and Joe tracks are on here, I'm not sure why that wasn't included also, but it's a small gripe considering the great price of these JSP boxes and that it it won't bother me to pick up the Joe box for Levee and all the other tracks they did together that were not included here.
This whole box is like a musical treasure chest. Beyond "Thank you Minnie and JSP!!!" I can't think of anything more to say.

On Classic Kennedy, the fiddler is situated with the English Chamber Orchestra in a program that spans from Bach to Satie. (Yes, you also get a Joni Mitchell tune; "Scarborough Fair"; and the fiddler's own forgettable "Melody in the Wind," too.) The sequencing is a bit disjointed--the summer storm from The Four Seasons is followed by Massenet's blissful "Meditation" from Thaïs--and Kennedy's performances range from good to fair. The English Chamber Orchestra does an admirable job on these diverse works (it deserves a lot of credit here), but it'll be up to the listener to decide whether he or she wants to hear "Air on the G String" followed by Kennedy's version of "Danny Boy." As with most Kennedy discs, you'll either love it or hate it. --Jason Verlinde

Romantic-Styled Playing.......2005-07-25
I came to love classical music through classical crossover, but have dumped crossover after listening to artists like Perlman and Hahn. So was very apprehensive going back to a “crossover” artist.
After a minute into his interpretation of Vivaldi’s third movement of Summer, I was hooked. Although Nigel may not play the pieces in a way that is considered “proper”, he brings his own style which is intense and highly emotional. The sound he can extract from his violin is engaging, and I always feel as if his violin is singing/crying to me. I’ve also heard several versions of “The Flight of the Bumble-Bee”, but this version just makes me giggle.
The only weakness for me is the mixing of main stream classical music. Songs such as the traditional songs like Scarborough Fair (a great song) and the Joni Mitchell song seem out of place. Perhaps it was EMI’s goal to show Nigel’s approach to different styles of music, but "this mixing things up" personally doesn’t work for me.
If you like the classical music on this CD, also pick up his Vivaldi CD’s which are fantastic. And if you like the traditional stuff, then get his “East to East” CD.
The beauty as it is.......2003-03-06
On a scale of love-hate, I love this CD. No: I -L-O-V-E- it. That is a masterpiece in itself. I'm neither violinist nor classical musician, not even very experienced classical listener - though I enjoy "Der Ring des Nibelungen" much deeper than "Love Me Tender". What strikes me in Nigel's playing, and on this album particularly, is his incredible technical brilliance. When he plays a note it is always THE NOTE he's meant to play. Not a 1/16 tone mistake, not a 1/10 millimeter shift. Few singers are capable of such exactness, much less violin players. With a brush like this, you can paint whatever picture you want. And the pictures of Nigel's are just incredible. The deepest of his feelings are portrayed in his music with such a delicacy and balance, and with great confidence. On to titles: my personal faves are Brahms, Chopin, Bach, Satie and Kroll's. "Banjo and Fiddle" is so ironic and courteous, "Zigeunerweisen" is heartbreaking, "Nocturne in C Sharp minor" makes you breathless of its sweet sadness. "Hungarian Dance 5" swept all other versions away: compared to Kennedy's brave, sharp, masculine, fiery rendition, any other version seems like glucose syrup compared to juicy meat. "Air on the G String" is so airy and transparent. And "Czardas" is probably the best thing I've ever heard in my life...
Flawless. Brilliant. Beautiful.
Clearly Kennedy.......2003-01-22
I had only heard Kennedy one other time and knew that this would be good, as it is. I'm not new to classical music and can say that Kennedy's playing is clear and beautiful. I don't know why others have such a hard time with it, but if it's talented and artistic violin music that you're looking for then this is for you...
An Interesting Concept, A Failed Production.......2002-09-07
A while back I had heard about a British violin soloist named Nigel Kennedy, who was working on transcribing songs by Jimi Hendrix for the violin. I had altogether forgotten his name until my friend lent me a copy of Kennedy's 1999 release 'Classical Kennedy', and when I saw the pictures of him with his Morrisey haircut, stubbly facial hair, and his leather jacket, I recognized this controversial figure, the so-called "Bad Boy" of classical music.
'Classical Kennedy' is an exploration of the violin not as the solo voice of a gargantuan half-hour concerto but, rather, the lead voice in a three to five-minute song, and it explores this concept from Bach to Joni Mitchell. Right away this poses a serious undertaking- it is difficult to achieve continuity in a classical album that practically spans the history of Western art music. However, this conflict is partly resolved by the consistency of the tracks' lengths.
Kennedy has a distinct sound, and his little "trick" is that he sometimes plays really hard and really fast. He occasionally draws an elegant and pure tone that listeners expect from a great soloist, but he also has the tendency to turn a beautiful phrase into a crude and apathetic statement. These days the idea of a violinist who isn't utterly predictable, and is willing to take liberties with the repertoire, is a pleasant muse, but Nigel Kennedy is certainly not the ideal solution.
Kennedy's gimmick becomes his fatal flaw- in classical music, the notes speak for themselves. He makes Bach and Brahms sound hoarse and nasal. Ask any professional violinist and they'll tell you that, though there isn't one exact way to play any piece, there are limits on what one should do with a phrase, and that rule is implicit through understanding the composition. It's a hard truth to face, and perhaps only a trained musician fully understands this phenomenon. Either way, there needs to be an intimacy between the performer and the listener. All in all, Kennedy's technique caves in on itself. He plays as if taking great liberties at every turn were in itself a good thing. He cuts off a note that should sing, his sense of tempo is awkward at best- he seems to be driven by self-indulgent whims rather than musical passion.
There are points in the album where I think that his approach does utter disservice to the piece. For example, his interpretation of Massenet's 'Meditations' simply does not compare to Itzhak Perlman's flawless, dramatic performance on 'A La Carte'. Kennedy's Chopin 'Nocturne in C#' (which really sounds better with just a piano) doesn't at all capture the emotion and power of Sarah Chang's performance on 'Sweet Sorrow'. I'm not saying that every single track on this album is a loser. But where he fails miserably in some regards is that his playing strays into avant-garde quirks, and it becomes somewhat ignorant to the music in the piece. Ivry Gitlis quoted in the DVD 'The Art of Violin' that 'of course it's an insult to music when somebody says 'that's the benchmark performance' or 'that's how it's supposed to be played''. But in a lot of classical works, the personality and individuality of the performer lay in the subtleties of the performance, not in urinating on the very things that made the piece wonderful and then hoping that the listener will somehow connect with it.
Nigel Kennedy, from a technical standpoint, is a musician to be envied, but I am certainly not one of his defenders. I am a violinist, and I have a life-long love and respect for some of these compositions. When I see these works become so utterly removed from the things that made them great in the first place, I become disappointed and depressed- but not because 'Classic Kennedy' has somehow offended me. Rather, these days it seems that classical record labels, big-shot corporate management, and major symphony orchestras, seem to think that a soloist with a clever gimmick is a cure for a disease effecting a dying genre. But classical music has upheld itself through discipline, conservation, and passion. In a lot of the pieces on this album, Kennedy abandons those values, and unfortunately the result is music that is surprisingly un-musical.

Perhaps the 3rd leading lady of Disco.......2005-08-26
By some music historians Carol Douglas is credited with having the first Disco Hit with Doctor's Orders. This collection contains this smash as well as her other mega hit Midnight Love Affair.
A number of cover tunes (reworked to a disco beat) are included here as well including; ABBA's Dancing Queen, The Bee Gees's Night Fever, and perhaps the most unique, The Door's, Light My Fire.
Carol has a good voice, and these songs are fun, and it once again shows that real talent emerged from image of Disco.
Unfortunately Misses 5 Star.......2003-11-05
Indeed yes...Carol Douglas is the disco queen of the 70-80s, rivaling Gloria Gayner and even Donna Summer. But this album almost misses 5 star because the tunes in most cases are just short single versions of around 3-4 minutes (the CD's total length is only 42 min.!), even though it broadly encompasses her representative fancy hits. It's regrettable. One of the biggest factor characterizing disco music is its length, so please include the extended 12' inch versions as much as possible !
Disco Inferno!.......2000-05-17
This disc brought me back! Can't stop groovin to this! Highly recommended! Great for parties and dancing.

Exposes the real ragtime.......2006-11-03
I think we have a tendency to play older music to match the expectations of our modern ear. This can bring new views and fresh insights, but it can also lose the original vision of the composer. I enjoy the massive orchestrations played on modern instruments, but I also value the original orchestrations played on period instruments. This disk is an example of the latter. W. C. Handy is one of the greats of the era and here he plays the masterpieces of his time in the style of the time. The clean (re-)recording brings out new emphasis and subtleties that I hadn't heard in modern performances. Eugenia is a lovely piece as is Cleopha. A Real Slow Rag starts out almost in a tango mood. Scott Joplin's New Rag picks up the pace. And there's the continuous thrill of "hearing" W. C. Handy play for us. I keep coming back to this disk for a refreshing look back to the American music of a century ago.
