How The West Was Won [Live]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For a band with such an overarching legacy, the official record of Led Zeppelin's legendary--and unpredictable--live act has heretofore been poorly represented by the disappointing, scattershot soundtrack to The Song Remains the Same. But this triple-disc live set (culled from 1972 Long Beach/LA shows in advance of Houses of the Holy) addresses history with a vengeance, if a few decades late. These shows have rightfully assumed cult status in the bootleg market, showcasing a band at the peak of its creative and performing powers. Zep faithful will welcome the belated release as evidence for enduring loyalty, but younger fans may find its diversity and dynamics even more enlightening--indeed, whole careers have since been built on the musical ideas Jimmy Page and company toss off here as decorative filler. Crucially rooted in the amped-and-hammered American blues of the guitarist's former band, the Yardbirds, the marathon workouts of "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" (which consume nearly an hour all by themselves) somehow encompass Ricky Nelson, Morocco, James Brown, Holst, Elvis Presley, and Muddy Waters amidst their trademark sturm und drang, while the acoustic set that closes out disc one showcases the band's--and particularly Robert Plant's--good-natured, crypto-Celtic folk appeal with energetic aplomb. Bigger and brasher than just about any rock act that followed in its historic wake, yet ever fan-loyal to its myriad influences, Led Zeppelin's live juggernaut finally gets the monument it deserves. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Live Led Zep experience you must have!.......2007-07-13

I've always really loved the studio-recorded Zeppelin hits that everyone knows, but until now I hadn't heard a live performance that really knocked me out. This release is absolutely fantastic and amazing. Truly better live than the studio sound. The music is timeless and doesn't sound the least bit old or dated. You need to get this 3 disc set to understand the importance of the musical legacy of Jimmy Page and the boys.

5 out of 5 stars 1972 was a good year. A very very good year........2007-07-07

Do we really need another review of what is quickly becoming the definitive live album of Zepplin? Probably not. But is that gonna stop me from saying what an immensely satisfying live album this is? Heck no!

1972 was the year we saw Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds, the Grateful Dead's Europe '72, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, and Lou Reed's Transformer. Could there be any more room for brilliance? You bet!

By this stage of their career, Zepplin was functioning on another plane of existence, but fortunately they'd gate in from time to time and share the majesty of their creations. Prepare to fail those will saves.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll.......2007-06-29

This was made at Rock's peak and Zeppelin's Peak it has all the essentials except for When the Levee Break's.
As for all of those studiophile's who are afraid of Live music take a chance this has been produced with the utmost care and Zepp outside of the Dead, The Who, Pink Floyd and Blue Note had the best of everything. The sound quality is great except for a few songs that they rush through but that was how they performed back then like every performance was going to be thier last. For the icing on the cake John Bonham is on FIRE. I have been wanting this for years after I heard it at a buddy's house don't hesitate any longer this is a must for the summer and for your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album Ever.......2007-06-23

This is without a doubt a mind-blowing collection, from the first to the third CD, clear and refined recordings of Led Zeppelin's California concerts from 1972. You will not be able to sit still, I guarantee you that, and if you are not up on your feet stomping along with Robert's vocals and Jimmy's guitar and John Bonam's driving drums, with the groovy bass of John Paul Jones from the very start, then you are not a rocker!
The first CD is my favorite one, starting with the good old hard rock we love Zeppelin for, and no one could do like them, songs like ""Immigrant Song", and of course, "Heartbreaker", the wailing bluesy "Since I've been loving you", then the brilliant,"Stairway to Heaven", with Robert Plant's comments adding a touch of familiarity and charm ("You remember laughter?"), continuing with the finest acoustic version of "California", and "That's the Way", ending with "Bron-Yr-Aur-Stomp", Robert Plant's song for Strider, his dog.
The third disc has a spectacular version of "The Ocean", so fine!
Do I recommend this album? Yes!!! Most definitely, and it will most likely become the most prized CD in your rock collection as soon as you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Why Rock and Roll is supposed to be played live.......2007-04-07

I will leave the track by track analysis to others. I just simply want to say that this serves as a stunning reminder of what Rock was all about. The energy and passion pouring out of these performance will leave you dumbfounded. And remind you that no over dubbed studio recording can ever match this peerless band in full flight.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

        5 out of 5 stars "The Professionals...The Wild Bunch...Wild Rovers...Silva".......2001-12-28

The "Classic Western" is never-ending...always at the forefront of the Film Industry---whenever our film-makers run out of projects, they bring back "The Western", fresh and never wandering far from the camera's eye or the composers pen---Silva Screen has been a leader in the "Compilation Department", so is it any wonder they release some hard-to-find scores...never fear my trail pardners...here they are!

Let me begin this review by stating the opening track "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN"(1960-Elmer Bernstein), is without a doubt, one of the most recognizable Western Themes ever composed---the same for "HOW THE WEST WAS WON"(1962-Alfred Newman), two outstanding composers with unforgettable film scores---but the score for "GETTYSBURG"(1993-Randy Edelman), just about steals the show...over fifteen minutes in length, covers the Main Title right up to the Reunion and Finale, with a special arrangement for a Suite, highlighting our freedom and liberty for ALL!

But let's get to the hard-to-find scores---"THE PROFESSIONALS"(1966-Maurice Jarre), starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin, great score with Jack Palance as the villian...Jarre's first attempt of scoring an American Western, captures the mood perfectly---"WILD BUNCH"(1969-Jerry Fielding), the classic Sam Packinpah film has been re-issued on DVD in it's entire uncut length, and composer Fielding completes the picture with this outstanding score---"WILD ROVERS"(1971-Jerry Goldsmith), this Blake Edwards film sets the wheels in motion for our composer to write a gripping score of the West, and how it was coming to the end of the trail, as civilization was closing in.

There you have it Buckaroo's...as we drive our herd to Abilene with Nic Raine(conductor) and The City Of Prague Philharmonic riding point, making sure no stragglers are left behind, we must meet our deadline at the rail head...James Fitzpatrick(producer) and Reynold da Silva(executive producer) giving us a fair price for our beef, this is how the West was, and through the recordings of Silva Screen Records is again...so "film-score-buffs", lean back in the saddle and watch the sun come up over the prairie skies...we're back when our country was just coming of age, gotta love it!

There is an Irish joke that says when St. Peter heard heavenly fiddle playing, he thought Frankie Gavin had died, but when he looked, it was only God trying to play like Frankie. The fiddle and overall music on this compilation make it my favorite Irish album.
