Album Description
The mighty Deep Purple returns with a special edition 2-CD set of their newest studio album Rapture Of The Deep. The Mk 8 lineup of the band features Ian Gillan on vocals, Ian Paice on drums, bassist Roger Glover, guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey. Rapture Of The Deep promises the continued presence of one of history's biggest bands, now celebrating their 37th year with such tracks as "Back To Back", "Junkyard Blues", "Before Time Began" and "Wrong Man". On the second disc there is a new version of Clearly Quite Absurd, as well as live versions of some of Deep Purple's biggest hits, such as "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star", and two of Rapture of the Deep favorites: "Rapture of the Deep" and "Wrong Man".
Customer Reviews:
Very solid album. The stuff on the second CD is a really good value, too!.......2007-05-06
My review of the original version of the album:
I saw Deep Purple back in 1994 when Steve Morse had just joined the band (the gig I saw with him was his third ever). In that review, I wrote this.. "Very good concert by a band who surprised me. Well worth the long trip to see them, and I hope they continue." Boy have they continued, and they're like a good wine, they're getting better with age. Their last few albums havent' done well sales wise in the US, which is a damn crime.
Purpendicular was spectacular, one of the best of Purple's entire catalogue. Abandon I didn't care for, but some did. Bananas was a wonderful album, but I think suffered from the perception it got from its goofy title.
Rapture of the Deep is very much a traditional sounding Deep Purple album, and when I started writing this review, I planned on doing a track by track review of it, which is something I generally do. The problem I have is that the album is so universally solid, I'd end up saying most the same thing for every track. This is a great album from start to finish. Even the tracks that others feel are weak in some other reviews I've read I like. It's been said Ian Gillan isn't the screamer he used to be, and that's for sure. He can't wail like he could when he was in his 20's, but his "modern voice" fits the material perfectly. There's rockers, ballads, and everything in between. A great piece of modern music from one of the bands that defined hard rock. The lyrics in the song "MTV" are fairly amusing, and when I saw Purple turn up on Eddie Trunk's show on VH1 Classic, that's all I could think of. :)
You cannot go wrong with this album. Geezer rock be damned.
My review of the updated 2 CD version of the album:
An updated version of the album came out. It was a 2 CD version. Disc 1 is exactly the same as the original 2005 release. Disc 2 is "all new". This new version has 8 extra tracks. Most are live, but there's a few standouts. The standouts for the updated version are an alternate version of "Clearly Quite Absurd", and.. "The Well Dressed Guitar", which is a track I've been waiting on Deep Purple to release for some time now. Back before they released their last album (Bananas), I saw 'em live, and they played Well Dressed in concert, saying it was something they were working on for their next album. It was FABULOUS. I absolutely loved it. So I waited, and before Bananas came out, the space shuttle exploded. Because of that, Steve Morse wrote a song that appeared on Bananas called "Contact Lost". It bumped Well Dressed from the album. They said Well Dressed might turn up as a B Side or something, and it never did. So I hoped it would be on Rapture, and it wasn't. I had just a live bootleg mp3 of the track, which wasn't quite the same. Then I heard of this 2 CD Special Edition of Rapture of the Deep, and "Well Dressed" WAS on there - finally. As good as the main Rapture of the Deep album is, I think "The Well Dressed Guitar" is a track worth picking up the 2CD version of, even if you have the original - I feel it's that good. I will go so far as to say that "Well Dresses" is by far my favorite single track of the Steve Morse era, and Ian Gillan doesn't even sing on it. :)
If you don't have either version, get this one. As I write this in May of 2007, they're priced pretty much the same, so the 2CD version is a much better value anyway.
Deep Purple Rapture of the Deep.......2007-02-15
An outstanding musical effort from a group I have appreciated for over 30 years. I am amazed by their ability to blend the modern styles with their established trademark sound to create music that old and young can enjoy equally. Kudos to Deep Purple!
Loved it from the first spin..........2007-01-05
I hesitated to jump into this because of many other long-time fans' poor reviews. It seemed to be a love/hate sort of thing. Yes, the CD is a continued departure from the glory days with Blackmore back in 1972, but these are different men from the ones who recorded Machine Head and Made in Japan.
Yes, they're gramps with amps. No question about that, but, hey, my knees hurt, too, these days. As one of DP's long-time fans, I'm glad to say I did buy this CD and I have enjoyed it greatly.
If you're a fan of Blackmore and didn't enjoy Bolin or Morse's work with the band, this is not for you. Blackers still isn't in the band and probably won't be returning any time soon. Airey's work on the keyboards is often reminiscent of Lord's, but retains his own voice. Gillan's voice has aged, we all know that, so I'm listening more for the witty and wry lyrics, particularly on "MTV". Overall, I find it better than Bananas, but a cut under Purpendicular. Compared to the Mk2 releases, I find it has a feel closest to Fireball, and enjoy it very much.
Be sure to get this version, not the one-CD pressing. The extra tracks are a decided treat.
CLASSIC PURPLE.......2007-01-04
As a fan of Deep Purple since the early 70's. Deep Purple have always amazed me with their energy and drive to keep going.
Rapture Of The Deep Special Edition 2 CD set is no exemption. Admittedly
I did buy the original release which was a single disc and only the 10 tracks which I still think was great, but the extra's on this special edition is well worth the re-investment. The addional studio track on Disc 1 MTV is not one of the better tracks on the album but still a good listen.
The stand out tracks on Disc CD1 are; Wrong Man (The best on The Album), Clearly Quite Absurd, Rapture Of The Deep, Money Talks, Kiss Tommorrow Goodbye, Girls Like That.
The bonus Disc CD2 has a collection of live and different studio mixes.
The Live tracks were recorded at the Hard Rock Cafe' in London in October 2005, and include Rapture Of The Deep, Wrong Man, Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, and Perfect Strangers. All these live tracks and very well mixed and sound great. The other studio tracks include Clearly Quite Absurd (New Version), Things I Never Said, The Well Dressed Guitar (Studio Version).
If you love Deep Purple then you will not be disappointed with this purchase.
Play it LOUD!
Its difficult to review.......2006-11-12
Its difficult to review -- i really like DP since i was a child. There is a special feeling for this band. I cannot be objective judging a band that means a lot to me. I like the album. I know that maybe Gillan's voice is now a little weak, that Morse is different to Blackmore (note : Not best or worst, just different), that i miss Jon Lord a lot.. but it is still Deep Purple and i really like it. As i mentioned above : Cannot be objective. However, i recommend this album to everyone. "Rapture of the Deep" is one of the best song ever in the history of the band. I mean it. Highly recommended.

Album Description
72 minutes on 8 tracks/ very good song diversity.
This CD provides a unique opportunity to hear the authentic sounds of humpback whales. There is no background music, only whales. Includes the special, nearly 25 minutes, "One Humpback Whale", an excellent recording of a close whale, just a few hundred yards away, originally recorded on digital audio tape, giving the whale great presence and clarity.
Recorded near the Virgin Islands from a 13 foot inflatable boat, using a professional hydrophone.

One of the best examples of Humpback Whale recordings to date. I have heard them all.

Good for meditating or working in the basement. Also use it for going to sleep. Personally, don't appreciate it when driving, but HEY! Save the Whales. Collect the whole set!
great cd.......2007-01-04
I had been looking for whale songs for a while, and finally this cd filled my expectations. It is only natural whale voices, nothing more. Some of them give me a peculiar funny feeling, like if the whale were singing a joke, or laughing. Not for everyday, but I enjoy it once in a while.

More rocking of the house........2007-02-10
DP once had the record as being the loudest rock band in the world. You must hear them to believe them.
Mediocre at best.......2007-01-27
You'd expect something better from a band like Deep Purple, especially with the great Steve Morse, but alas, this album is no better than anything they put out since "Perfect Strangers". It's OK, but without that spark of originality that defined their earlier work... It's sort of like Genesis and their awful "I Cannot Dance" album. The well has ran dry I guess...
Enjoyed it from its first spin... but..........2007-01-05
Get the 2-CD bonus set instead. OK? Do that. I'll have more review over there. Suffice to say if you're a fan of Gillan lyrics and Morse hooks, you'll enjoy this CD.
As King's , Deep Purple are unbeatable.......2006-12-07
This is the best album DP do since Perfect Strangers, for me better than Purpendicular even though it goes in another direction (but if we had to somehow compare...). It really sounds fresh like a long jam session, giving all members the space to show their skills, and how they show man.. And analizing the work under this point of view, it really takes us to the glorious In Rock, Fireball and MH, which were, at their time, more or less the same: the result of a perfect chamestry between five talented guys doing their best and enjoying it. Only time has put them in perspective. I love this last album and it was a great great surprise for me to realize how healthy, alive and well the band is doing. I mean I love Bananas, as every other album, no exception, but the ROTD sounds so good and so Purple that, even it's structure may be easier and less risky than many others, it's an UNMISSABLE album, somehow playing as a link between the MH time and the PS (Money Talks's structure's not very different from the song "Perfect Strangers"). "Girls like that" has also a very similar construction to "69", from Abandon which is, after ROTD, the more DP's album they have released with Steve Morse. So, we have a band that just keeps getting better after every obstacle. After Blackmore's departure, they experimented with Purpendicular and then they got better (and more Purple) with Abandon; after Lord's departure, they experimented (and sounded) bananas only to get MUCH BETTER and MUCH PURPLE with ROTD. Don't know when/if they are going to slow down but they're absolutely unbeatable. All hail the Purple kings!!!
3,5 stars for hardrock veteran.......2006-11-07
the songs are different than the previous albums.
the vocals of Ian Gillan are modernized and he sounds very different than any other old songs we already have heard in the old classic Purple albums.
the band seems to change their music style drastically today. The hard hitting guitar-riff, drum beat and bass are typical old Purple musical tradition which integrate directly to the new fashion lyrics or songs.
check out the new songs like Back to black, money talks, rapture of the deep, wrong man, before the time began, junkyard blues are different than the older songs we knew.

Fire from Lindholm.......2001-11-17
This set contains four records with two abridged live performances. I have as yet only listened to the performance from 1974. This is one of the first pirated records to appear with the Swedish dramatic soprano Berit Lindholm. Let us hope that recordings from the Ring conducted by Sir Colin Davis at Covent Garden will appear soon! Meanwhile this Tristan from Amsterdam 1974 fills the gap with a truly amazing dramatic force. You can feel the amazement and tension among the public, crying out their "bravos" at the end. This is Lindholm's evening and a great one ideed. Totally involved in her part she becomes Isolde and everything catch fire... No Wagnerian or other opera lover can be without these records. The first two CD's concentrates on the part of Isolde (1974).The performance from 1979 (not with Lindholm)concentrates on the tenor, Spas Wenkoff - more comments will follow when I have listened to that. For the moment, the 5 stars are for the 1974 recording.

Yes, yes, yes!!!! You have to buy this album.......2005-12-16
Okay, I actually thought the production itself sounded weak, I liked the sound on Abandon and Perpendicular much better, but the overall quality of the sound is good, and the vocals and music are amazing. I would definitely buy this album again, even if I wasn't one of the ones lucky enough to get a copy in the tin *grinning*. Cheers.
Breathless.......2005-12-02
"As we all know its hard to breathe when something spiritual has taken place".
I think that says it all. Thank you Deep Purple for a truly wonderful musical experience.
This is a truly great modern rock album.
It has all the requisites: great melodies e.g. 'Before time began'; quirky, imaginative and at times deeply poetic lyrics e.g. 'Clearly quite absurd'; great heavy riffs e.g. 'Wrong Man'; Wonderful musicianship e.g. instrumental break in 'Junkyard Blues'; etc......
The cream of the crop for me are the title track 'Rapture of the Deep', 'Wrong Man', 'Before time began', 'Clearly quiet absurd', 'Kiss tomorrow goodbye'. It is hard to leave any of the tracks of my favorite list. Maybe 'Don't let go' and 'Back to back' are the weakest but still good songs in their own right.
It is great to see an older band like this able to come up with a vibrant and exciting album that can easily hold its head up with the likes of Green Days' 'American Idiot' or Collective Souls' 'Youth'.
Lets have more studio albums soon from Deep Purple. I would love to see Deep Purple in concert only playing songs from their last four studio albums. I know they were great in the stone ages but they are better now.
UNMISSABLE! .......2005-11-03
Deep Purple spent about a month recording their new album, "Rapture of the Deep" and this becomes clear when hearing this "live in-studio" effort. This album is hard, dark and adventurous, a very cohesive album. The sound quality isn't great, but the overall presentation is still breathtaking. Those who have given "Rapture of the Deep" a low rating, either didn't play it enough to reap the full benefits, or, it's simply not their cup of tea. But as a fan of the Steve Morse era, this album really delivers.
Ian Gillan's vocals are truly unique. What an inspired effort. Actually, the whole band is inspired. This sort of strength and musical subtlety can only come from a true working band, not a group getting together every few years promoting another "hits" collection on the latest farewell-reunion tour.
From the opening snarl of "Money Talks" through the very touching "Clearly Quite Absurd", topped off by the politically insightful "Before Time Began", as well as everything in between, this is not only vintage Purple, it's modern day classic rock. UNMISSABLE!
Here is a quick run down of the tracks:
01. Money Talks - a well arranged progressive hard rock vibe. There are a lot of things happening in this song and it sets the tone for the album. Stunning. A great opener!
02. Girls Like That - a "radio friendly" song with a nice hook and a cool keyboard solo. It holds its own next to the great opener and the following nugget!
03. Wrong Man - a chugging powerful groove and again a catchy chorus. It's hard to stop singing this one. So out of the gate we've got three good rock songs of various style and then something wonderful happens...
04. Rapture Of The Deep - an epic with fantastic Arabic riffs and melodies. A very successful attempt at trying something a little progressive with purpose. Masterpiece #1
05. Clearly Quite Absurd - a simply stunning ballad that doesn't get mushy at all. Melancholy melodies which suit Gillan's mature voice perfectly. Goose-bump time. Masterpiece #2
06. Don't Let Go - one of the albums best rockers and a steady groovin' toe tapper. Nice!
07. Back To Back - this one goes many places. Fun funky stuff that could go on to be a radio hit.
08. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye - a fast rocker, with very powerful lyrics and a Bo-Diddley type drum feel from Paice.
09. MTV - this has some fantastic "tell it like it is" lyrics, superb singing by Gillan and wonderful solos. This could be the dark horse of the album.
10. Junkyard Blues - breathtaking, just listen to these solos. The energy is contagious. To describe it in words is impossible. But it's blues that I can digest.
11. Before Time Began - WOW!...a Deep Purple classic, with a psychedelic touch. Once again, I am impressed by the arrangements and the progressive feel. Masterpiece #3
HIGHLIGHTS: Money Talks, Rapture of the Deep, Clearly Quite Absurd, Junkyard Blues and Before Time Began.
I have to confess, I've made a mistake questioning a band with such a rich history as Deep Purple. Maybe they don't always hit that "bulls eye" but each time they're written off, they deliver one of their best albums. Deep Purple remain intense, fearless, full of fire, witty and passionate. This CD still finds new meaning in a medium they all but single-handedly created. Congratulations Purple, you're far from retirement!

Deepurple release the demos...a genius move!.......2006-01-03
The longest living hard rock band from the 70's is back with a brand new album of, demos? Well, it sounds like the band said, "why re-record these amazing demos?" As a musician myself, sometimes the demo can be better than the "official" version. I believe this could be the case here. Don't get me wrong, the performances are to die for and the sound quality is great, even better than the standard version (with MTV).
Most of the songs are mid tempo rockers that explore some mature subject matters both in lyrics and musicianship. Perhaps the finest song on the album is the poignant "Clearly Quite Absurd." It starts off like one of Purple's best ballads and develops into a colossal and effective crescendo. Other stand outs are "Money Talks," "Wrong Man," the title track, "Before Time Began" and the bonus track "Things I Never Said."
Purple's guitarist of 12 years, Steve Morse really stands out on this album with rock solid rhythm and fiery leads. Ian Gillan continues to amaze as a legendary rock singer. Gillan may not be such a screamer anymore, but he still knows how to turn a good song into a very special one. The rest of the band are as forceful and stunning as ever. Keyboardist, Don Airey may just be the biggest star of the album with keyboard work that must make founding member Jon Lord feel either very proud or a hair jealous.
Here is a quick run down of the tracks:

07. Back To Back - this one goes many places. Fun funky stuff that could go on to be a radio hit.
08. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye - a fast rocker, with very powerful lyrics and a Bo-Diddley type drum feel from Paice.
09. Junkyard Blues - breathtaking, just listen to these solos. The energy is contagious. To describe it in words is impossible. But it's blues that I can digest.
10. Before Time Began - WOW!...a Deep Purple classic, with a psychedelic touch. Once again, I am impressed by the arrangements and the progressive feel. Masterpiece #3
11. Things I Never Said - Why on earth was this one not included on the original version of ROTD. A great up tempo song with another amazing guitar and keyboard solo break. Morse and Airey are really doing the Purple legacy proud. A real feel good way to end this powerful album.
It's one of those albums that continues to grow on you with each and every listen. This is the best Deep Purple album since Perfect Strangers, and reaches the creative heights as well. The Deep Purple of today is a captivating and no pretense entity. Just spectacular music.

The best album of 2005 gets even better.......2007-03-19
The longest living hard rock band from the 70's is back with a brand new album, well sort of. It's actually been out since November 2005 selling over one million copies worldwide. This is a special edition two CD set, that gives you not just a bonus disc, but a great bonus disc.
Most of the songs on "Rapture Of The Deep" are mid tempo rockers that explore mature subject matters both in lyrics and musicianship. Perhaps the finest song on the album is the poignant "Clearly Quite Absurd." Other stand outs are "Money Talks," "Wrong Man," the title track, "Before Time Began" and the bonus track on disc two, "Things I Never Said."
Purple's guitarist of 12 years, Steve Morse really stands out on this album with rock solid rhythm and fiery leads. Ian Gillan continues to amaze as a legendary rock singer of forty years, still knowing how to turn a good song into a very special one. The rest of the band are as forceful and stunning as ever. Keyboardist, Don Airey may just be the biggest star of the album with keyboard work that must make founding member Jon Lord feel either very proud or a hair jealous.
Here is a quick run down of the tracks on disc one:
01. Money Talks - a well arranged progressive hard rock vibe. There are a lot of things happening in this song and it sets the tone for the album. Stunning. A great opener!
02. Girls Like That - a "radio friendly" song with a nice hook and a cool keyboard solo. It holds its own next to the opener and the following nugget!
03. Wrong Man - a chugging powerful groove and again a catchy chorus. It's hard to stop singing this one. So out of the gate we've got three great rock songs of various style and then something wonderful happens...
04. Rapture Of The Deep - an epic with fantastic Arabic riffs and melodies. A very successful attempt at trying something a little progressive with purpose. Masterpiece #1
05. Clearly Quite Absurd - a simply stunning ballad that doesn't get mushy at all. The melancholy melodies suit Gillan's mature voice perfectly. The song develops into a colossal and effective crescendo. Goose-bump time. Masterpiece #2
06. Don't Let Go - one of the albums best rockers and a steady groovin' toe taper. Killer filler!
07. Back To Back - this one goes many places. Fun funky stuff that could go on to be a radio hit.
08. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye - a fast rocker, with very powerful lyrics and a Bo-Diddley type drum feel from Paice.
09. MTV - Perhaps the dark horse of the album. A rapping rockin' "stick it to MTV" winner.
Here is a quick run down of the tracks on the bonus disc:
01. Clearly Quite Absurd (new version) - well sort of a new version. It sounds like a very creative remix, stipping it down at the start and building it up as it goes. It's also a shorter version ending at 3:36, without the big ending.
02. Things I Never Said - Why on earth was this one not included on the original version of ROTD (except for Japan), I'll never know. It's a great up tempo song with another amazing guitar and keyboard solo break. Morse and Airey are really doing the Purple legacy proud.
03. The Well Dressed Guitar - an outtake from the Bananas album of October 2003. All I can say is, this should have been included. What an stunning instrumental.
04. Rapture Of The Deep (Live)- Tracks 4 thru 8 are from October 2005 at the Hard Rock Cafe in London, where they were playing these new songs for the first time. Pretty good overall, but the mix isn't perfect. But, it shows that the new material works well live.
05. Wrong Man (Live)- Like "Rapture Of The Deep," it's another powerful live rendition of an already intense song.
06. Highway Star (Live)- There's no way to beat the 1972 Made In Japan version, but it's still head and shoulders above most bands.
07. Smoke On The Water (Live)- see highway star.
08. Perfect Strangers (Live)- a solid performance of the 1984 classic.
To summarize, Rapture Of The Deep is one of those albums that continues to grow on you with each and every listen. This is the best Deep Purple album in a long time and now you can have it with a great bonus disc.
The Deep Purple of today is a captivating and no pretense entity. Just spectacular music.
