The Basement Tapes
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The Basement Tapes can be heard as a manifesto for the '90s' underlying Americana agenda or as the greatest album never intended for commercial release. Homegrown 1967 recordings taped in the Band's fabled Big Pink hermitage in Saugerties, New York, many of the 24 songs resonated across American and English rock and folk long before their belated 1975 release through studio interpretations by the Byrds, Fairport Convention, Manfred Mann, Peter, Paul & Mary, and numerous other acolytes, as well as through myriad unauthorized bootlegs. Good as the covers were, Dylan and the Band rolled their own with an extraordinary coherence that sounds only more authentic in these rough-hewn, intimate, always musical performances, which dovetail with Dylan's stark John Wesley Harding and the Band's stunning debut, Music from Big Pink as well as the presciently lo-fi The Band. At a time when most rock culture was entranced with its post-atomic origins, these songs sounded timeless, plunging into pre-industrial folk, turn of the (20th) century barrelhouse and blues, and crackling, vintage rock & roll excursions with offhand verve and a thrilling disregard for what was hip. Time has only reinforced their visionary power. --Sam Sutherland

Under-appreciated Bob and the Band.......2007-05-17
this was hard to get ahold of - a shame, because it's a must-listen
Raucous missing link.......2007-01-13
A lot of big hardcore fans are up in arms about the incompleteness and misrepresentation of The Basement Tapes. I'm a big fan, but I'm not hardcore. I'd love to hear the complete Tapes, but mostly I'm just happy that I have these CD-quality versions to listen to. These songs are a great snapshot of Dylan's reaction to the public's insatiable desire for serious music and an essential step in The Band's evolution from The Hawks, to Dylan's backing band, to their own unique animal.
It's great to hear Dylan and the boys having a good time, and I don't really mind if the songs are half-baked--the playing is top notch, and the fun they're having is infectious. Songs like "Million Dollar Bash" and "Please Mrs. Henry" reflect Bob's still razor-sharp skill with lyrics, but also his humor which hadn't been this straight-up since his early albums (before the expectations). The Band shines as back-up, with Garth Hudson, as usual, providing the most accomplished accompaniment, with Richard Manuel and Rick Danko chiming in with gorgeous harmonies.
The Band's solo recordings (likely later interpolations) are good, but not as shining as their collaborations with Dylan. Still, "Katie's Been Gone" is ear candy, as is the unusually listenable Robertson vocal on "Bessie Smith." On the other hand, Dylan singing later Band hits like "Tears of Rage" and "This Wheel's On Fire" is pretty interesting, but it's hard to let go of the amazing definitive versions The Band cut on Music From Big Pink. A couple other great classics are "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" and "Nothing Was Delivered," (brilliantly covered by The Byrds on Sweetheart of the Rodeo).
All in all, The Basement Tapes may not be complete or historically accurate, and it might not be as weighty or serious as Dylan's earlier work, but it's a heck of a lot of fun and a pleasure that I have repeatedly enjoyed listening to. Maybe someday we'll get the rest . . .
get it if you don't have it.......2006-08-10
this is one of my favorite bob dylan records...I really don't care where or how it was made, it's perfect. dylan's giddy free-associating no longer sounds like the facile ramblings of a clever english lit dropout; his imagination has matured, but still has its freshness. his voice is unaffected and spontaneous; he sounds as though he's comfortably out of the spotlight, free from the pressures of being his generation's guru, and the feeling of creative delight between dylan and the band is infectious.
the songs are filled with quirky, surreal western scenarios (john wesely harding has a similar theme but lacks the exuberance of these recordings), with a wide emotional range from mournful to silly. the narratives sound vaguely inspired by the spaghetti westerns of that time--they seem to describe what goes on in those oddball towns when clint eastwood leaves...
the melodies are interesting and somewhat different from dylan's usual songs--they sound as though they were composed collaboratively. the arrangements, although rough, are also very rich; the instrumental and vocal parts are more integrated than on most dylan albums. it is also refreshing and unusual to hear dylan actually sing along with his band during choruses. this creates a "one of the boys" tone to the recordings, as opposed to his usual lonely poet/messiah/comedian persona.
the band's cuts are great too, and although they were apparently made at a different time, they fit in perfectly. with dylan as their mentor (whether or not he was present) they sound better here than on most of their later recordings, where their scruffiness gets increasingly stifled by studio slickness.
the one puzzling deficiancy of this album is the ommission of "quinn the eskimo"-- this was perhaps the most well-known song from these sessions (it actually became a hit for manford mann), but I've only seen it on one dylan rarities collection.
We need a bootleg series edition.......2006-07-27
I know, I know . . . it seems inevitable perhaps that one will be produced someday. But as Columbia (and Dylan himself) have made major errors in reading the public's desires (see Infidels and the upcoming Bootleg Series addition) when and if in fact this will happen is anyone's guess. So I propose that anyone who would like to see a re-mastered authoritative edition (and not another "best-of" watered down compilation of live or alternate versions of Dylan tunes that, while wonderful, have been packaged and re-packaged in some form or another over and over again - - how many live versions of "Blowin' In the Wind" do we need anyway?) of some of the finest material Dylan ever produced ("Sign On the Cross" and "I'm Not There (1956)" (the latter of which has provided the title for a MAJOR MOTION PICTURE for God's sake) as well as covers of "Four Strong Winds" and "A Fool Such As I" and alternate tracks of great, if lesser known, tunes too numerous to list here) please take the advantage of this forum and simply respond to this review as helpful. Perhaps then Columbia will get the message. And hopefully they'll have the wherewithal to hire someone like Greil Marcus or Paul Williams (and not Jeff Rosen, who should have been fired from the Bootleg Series long ago) to oversee the project and make sure this music is finally given the treatment it deserves. "Some of these bootleggers, they make pretty good stuff."
How anyone in their right mind can compare this to Blonde..........2006-04-03
...on Blonde, I don't know. One is a fully realized landmark album recorded with the best studio talent in Columbia's Nashville division backing a genius songwriter at the height of his career. The other is a collection of half-written joke songs recorded who knows where by a painfully average tour band backing a guy who sounds half drunk and bored. And, as others have pointed out, glomming a bunch of lame Band songs onto this mess is both commercially fraudulent and artistically reprehensible. As a bootleg it was mildly amusing. As a commercial release it's an insult.
Don't believe the hype on this one. If you're a Dylan fan, you already know how worthless this stuff is. But if you're just starting to work your way through his albums, save your money here. You aren't going to find a continuation of the '65-'66 albums. What you'll find is the beginning of a long period of serious suckitude only broken in 1975 w/Blood on the Tracks.

Cult recordings meet cult artist on the new CD/DVD HOWARD FISHMAN PERFORMS BOB DYLAN & THE BAND'S "BASEMENT TAPES" LIVE AT JOE'S PUB, from Monkey Farm Records.
Culled from three sold-out evenings at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in New York City in May 2006, the new "BASEMENT TAPES" CD features classics like "Tears of Rage" and "This Wheel's On Fire" alongside less well-known numbers. True to the subversive nature of the original material, the new CD also features the first-ever commercial release of "I'm Not There (1956)," considered by many to be Dylan's unfinished masterpiece. A bonus DVD is included, featuring live footage from the Joe's Pub performances.

Should have stayed in the basement........2007-01-06
I'm a huge Mick Abrahams fan, and my guitar playing was influenced by his performances with Jethro Tull as well as Blodwyn Pigs first album A Head Rings Out...but that was a long time ago. I recently bought the Basement Tapes with the hope of finding some newly discovered examples of Mick brilliant guitar work. What I found was profoundly disappointing and I can't believe that he would have ever authorized this albums release. At best, some cuts are simply average performances of old tunes, at worst Mick sounds rusty and out of practice, struggling through poor performances of his earlier brilliant solos. Perhaps this is another example of how the inspiration, ambition, and hope of the sixties, as manefested through rock music, can never be recreated. Micks exciting, spontainious, and original guitar work seems to have been a product of his place in time, now long gone.
PIGGY WIG WIG.......2005-05-26
Like a lot of people, I approached Blodwyn Pig by way of Jethro Tull. Mick Abrahams was a 'force to contend with' in the original Tull line-up, and he and Ian Anderson came to loggerheads about the direction the group should take.
Abrahams split, but the group he formed was no mere spin-off. Blodwyn Pig was every bit the equal of Jethro Tull. Abrahams was and is a first-rate blues guitarist. His electric guitar stylings are instantly recognizable, and he is also a master of acoustic fingerstyle blues guitar. Sax and flute man Jack Lancaster shared Ian Anderson's fondness for imitating jazzman Roland Kirk. Lancaster even replicated Kirk's trick of playing two horns at the same time.
The tracks on Basement Tapes were drawn from BBC sessions that Blodwyn Pig did in 1969, and later in 1974 during an abortive attempt to reform the group ( the '74 edition of the band also includes former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker.) These tunes fully illustrate just how eclectic a group Blodwyn Pig was. They feature guitar/sax passages that wail as hard as King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man", plus examples of Abrahams' off the wall sense of humor (best example: "Mr.Green's Blues").
Blodwyn Pig was as good as any band playing between 1969 and 1971---extremely innovative and exciting. Don't miss this one, or the two classic studio albums, "Ahead Rings Out" and "Getting to This." Five stars.
" A Pig Makes Good " Bloodwyn Pig - The Basement Tapes.......2003-11-12
As a complete fan of Mick Abrahams it was great to take a casual look at the CD'S available for Bloodwyn Pig and find " The Basement Tapes"
Great fidelity througout as well as fine blues rock guitar from Mick!
In case you dont know Mick Abrahams he was a founding member of Jethro Tull and treat yourself to their first album. Mick's tone is always superb as well as his playing and Tull got gradually worse as Ian Anderson tightened his grip on the band.By the time Tull had released " Aqualung " they were on the way to some kind of weird sing song junk not heavy riffage! I now know why Mick split...he is 100% Blues and Rock.
Several of the Pigs hits are here sometimes twice as the original band doing the numbers in early 1970's then again live in 1974 with a version of the Pig that released no album.
Remember to put on the track " Drive Me " and turn it up and check out Mick wailing away....It was a real pleasure to hear a fine guitarist at what he does best great blues based rock guitar with a great bottom and an ammazing jack Lancaster on Sax!
If you dont own and "Bloodwyn Pig " be sure to purchase " A Head Rings Out" that is their first album and a must it contains a great slide track " Dear Jill " as I have told you before buy it now and enjoy!

Just In Concert!.......2005-07-10
These guys definatly can rock! They played at a place called Max's today in Baltimore, Maryland. Personally, I absolutely love these guys. Think of a Green Day cd but add much better lyrics. I'm a teenager and loved it. Even friends ages 9-45 like it! Please check it out! There other album is great too! Plus, they informed me that they will be releasing a new album soon! Enjoy people!
Lemon Fresh...squeaky clean power pop!.......2000-03-27
If you can appreciate power pop from the likes of Jason Falkner, Jellyfish and Umajets, you'll love the sound of Starbelly. The songs are hook-laden, but that's not to say that they're in any way simplistic. Cliff's vocal talent is nothing short of perfection, and all the guys put on one heckuva live show. If you buy this CD for one reason only, let it be because of "Better Than Myself".
My fave record of 1998 and beyond!.......1999-11-16
Starbelly have vocal harmonies unmatched in modern pop music today. It's almost kismet. Cliff Hillis plays a MEAN guitar, and Greg Schroeder is one of the best pop drummers out there, no question. Combined with Dennis Schocket's pop-sensible bass and melody, this is a tip top record.
Lemon Fresh in the Limelight.......1999-11-04
The spiritual descendents of Badfinger, the Raspberries and Marshall Crenshaw, Starbelly don't break any new ground here, they simply pave it with perfect harmonies and more hooks than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Each song here is a standout, and if this were 1977, perhaps some of these songs would be in AM radio rotation, alongside "Baby Blue" and "Go All The Way".
So, if you are looking for the ultimate CD to play endlessly on those long summer days at the beach (Rehoboth Beach, Delaware?), this is it.
Highly recommended.
great power pop cd.......1999-01-15
I like the tories and velvet crush and I thing this cd is as good or better than both bands. great harmonies!

'Noos rarities better than most bands' official albums.......2003-09-17
Although the Rubinoos were never one of the better known power pop groups, their inclusion on the Rhino Poptopia! and D.I.Y. CD's showed that they bettered most of their contemporaries, unfortunately, they didn't produce many proper albums. Fortunately, this rarities collection shows that they still had a wealth of great material. The Not Lame reissue is the preferred edition, since it tacks on 3 totally worthy tracks, although the production on the bonus tracks is a bit dated. Get the Anthology first, and if you enjoy it, snag everything else by this wonderful band - starting of course with Basement Tapes.
Best Tracks:
"Hurts Too Much" - Catchy riff-driven pop rocker, the "No No No" on the last chorus is my favorite vocal moment on any Rubinoos song.
"Hey Rita" - Sounds a lot like "Jennifer" (found on Anthology) but with a better chorus. Sweet and simple.
"Let Me Hear You Say Yeah" - Cheesy lyrics but great performances by the band.
"Fireball" - Similar in execution (if not in sound) to Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me" - early swingin' rock n' roll with heavier guitar and a screaming solo.
"Not Just Another Pretty Face" - Second best track on the album, one of those songs that sounds like you've heard before but its totally original.
"Handle With Care" - Charming mid-tempo pop song - one of the bonus tracks.
"Too Up To Feel Down" - Totally catchy AM Radio rocker that adds some 80's production tricks to a totally 60's pop-rocker. Try not to sing along!
Long-lost demos for terrific unreleased third album.......2003-08-06
The Rubinoos first "Odds 'n' Sods" volume (complemented by the follow-up "Garage Sale" release) collects studio demos from 1980-81 for a never-to-be-released third album. With bassist and vocalist Al Chan replacing original member Royse Ader, the Rubes sound as crisp and exuberant as ever. Tommy Dunbar's songs (he wrote or co-wrote all except "It's a Shame") are insanely hummable, with infectious melodies and sing-along harmonies; this is easily as good a collection of originals as those found on the band's first two albums.
Jon Rubin's vocals soar as beautifully as ever, and he yields the spotlight now and again for effective leads by Tommy and Al. Though these are only demos, the harmonies are intricate and sharply sung. The finish of the recordings adds a slight rawness that actually plays well against the polished playing and singing.
There have been two U.S. issues of this album. The original thirteen-track edition on the One Way label includes terrific song-by-song notes by the band. The Not Lame reissue (entitled "The Basement Tapes... Plus") drops the song-by-song liners, but adds three more original demos ("Handle With Care" "It's Magic" and "Too Up to Feel Down"). One or the other is a must-have for any power-pop fan, and an essential missing link in the Rubes canon.

Ian Charles-"...To Those Who Wait"
Until now, Long out of print.
A Collection of Early songs Cut live in the studio and recorded between 1990-1993. Several songs feature all instruments by Ian Charles and ohters are performed by Ian Charles backed by Last Cafe. Songs like "Wild Oats" or "John James" are timeless. This is Ian Charles at an incredibly creative, and developmental period. But the simplicity and rawness of many of the songs make this a very enjoyable cd.
Customer Reviews:
A Full Plate...A really good debut CD for Ian.......2001-07-31
The developmental side of songwriting is not really allowed in today's polluted mass media arena. That "fact" is a shame and a sham. These are songs that grow and develop with the songwriter, and the listener. The songs are a strong combination of Folk storytelling, Rock-n-Roll, and Alt-Country ( Via Dylan or Mellencamp influence) I first heard this Cd and I thought it was so different from his other two releases that I already had come to own. But, over time this has become a true constant in my CD player. The diversity of style and the powerful performances both in the acoustic and electric songs like the riveting,"John James" or the Epic rocker, "It's Tough to Balance.." The now classic Ian Charles composition almost completely performed by Ian is "Come home on the Wind" is absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend you give this one a spin for your money.
