Released in the glow of Wings' biggest and best album, Band on the Run, Venus & Mars found Paul McCartney in his element--a working rock star, being screamed at again, cheerfully riding the last rays of his youth. Adulation always brought the best out of him, and Venus & Mars is nearly the equal of its more lauded predecessor. McCartney never strays from his favorite themes (sex, drugs, rock & roll, and marriage), but his confidence is high as he mixes gorgeous, airy production numbers like "Listen to What the Man Said" and "Letting Go" with the ribald and hilarious. "Rock Show" matches the Who's "Long Live Rock" as the finest and funniest of those self-celebratory '70s stomps. McCartney's effortless marshalling of melody and arrangement hoists the blander material out of trouble, and the best stuff's powered by genuine, rediscovered verve. Facile and frivolous, but not at all bad. And their version of the "Crossroads" theme is wicked. --Taylor Parkes

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much despite muted scratchy sound on last track.......2007-02-07

I gave this to my father. He was thrilled by the collection of songs. He said the last track was a little scratchy and lower volume but that the sound quality of all of the other tracks was great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

Time was that R&B had a host of girl/boy teams, but those days were a distant memory till the Jersey-based Koffee Brown got to brewing. Inspired by notables like Ashford & Simpson (though not as good), Koffee Brown inject their li'l slice of ghetto heaven love songs with enough product placement to keep things jiggy. Fortunately, the duo has enough vocal skills to satisfy the more sedate fan. The gimmick is that Vee (the girl) and Fonz (the guy) bring their respective gender bias to the songs, which means there's plenty of he-said-she-said to accompany producer Kay-Gee's undeniably hooky grooves and radio-ready beats. With its throw-your-hands-in-the-air appeal and Friday nite bounce, the first single, "After Party," is the epitome of good times. When Koffee Brown keep the mood up and lay off the melodrama they're fun, and good to the last drop. --Amy Linden

For those that don't know, Koffee Brown is a sleep. It's one of those that you can put in yo CD player let let the whole thing play. Not skipping a track. Don't know what happen to them, but there well over done. Hit us with another one.

Where in the world is Koffee Brown?? This album has been slept on by many and I am guilty for that myself. This album is tight as I dont know what. Very talented couple. Did they end their career of artists early? Get dropped from their record label? Where is Koffee Brown??

4 out of 5 stars Slammin.......2002-07-02

When I first hear the song AFTER PARTY I liked it, but I didn't run out and by the Koffee Brown CD. Then I checked out the CD one day and really liked what I heard. Vee and Fonz sound great together although for the longest time I couldn't figure who the 2 voices on all the tracks were. It's great cruisin in the car music. Fun to try and sing the lyrics too---especially Weekend Thing.

5 out of 5 stars Koffee Brown Is Tasty.......2002-04-14

Koffee Brown's debut is definetly worth the buy. I wouldn't hesitate on this PARTY STARTING OLD SCHOOL VIBE CD. While you chillin by yourself or entertaining at a Barbeque this is the one to pop in. You will find that this cd offers selections mainly about relationships which is oh so common. But the vibe that you will get from this cd is like no other. The whole entire cd is straight. The songs to listen closely too are........ Weekend Thing, After Party and Didn't Mean to Turn You On but stop there. Enjoy! One Love.

4 out of 5 stars pretty sweet stuff here.......2006-04-20

The rest of these reviews sure make me feel kinda fruity for liking this band... alot. For instance, the girl (indiepop fan) who says she likes to listen to this album and bat her eye lashes while sipping soda pop... WHOAAAAAAAA.
So we're all a bit fruity inside, and this is the perfect compliment. Ok and so my name is mary kate and ashley fan, but that is just a joke ok? Fun, poppy, love songs.. tangled with bits of silly humor. Hey how hot is that chick on the cover huh? Yeah baby now i'm manly.
ok whatever bye

5 out of 5 stars You MUST buy this record!!!.......2006-03-25

Seldom does something so charming, disarming and seductive come along. I went last night to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and was floored by the opening band who, while not everyone paid enough attention to them, in my mind, stole the show. It's been a long time since I've been this excited by a new (to me) act, that I'm nearly giddy with anticipation. This New Zealand sextet, sometimes septet has it all. 5 part harmonies the Beach Boys would be jealous of, Avante Garde pop sensibilities, and raw talent in spades. I was transfixed simply watching the young lady who shares lead vocal responsibilities play four different instruments while her flirty, playful voice kept perfect time and she smiled broadly the whole time. Some friends with me made comparisons to a highly evolved 'X' or a Phil Spector-esque group from the early sixties (which made me think that Brunettes might be a clever play on the Ronettes) or a Pet Sounds era Beach Boys. Regardless of what you hear, it will all seem warmly familiar and delightfully unique. Don't waste any more time. Go out and buy Mars Loves Venus right away.

5 out of 5 stars Bubblegum Pop, in the Best Possible sense.......2006-01-11

"Mars Loves Venus" is one of the... no, THE best pop record I've ever heard. It's like the audio equivalent of one of those rare, really good, feel-good romantic comedies. Architecture In Helsinki meet with Lou Reed and decide to make the most perfect giddy feel-good record they can.
Coming from what is normally an indie-rock person, this is high praise indeed. Simply, this is pop music that works. It works to the highest ideal of pop music: music made to simply make the listener feel happy.
From the avant-guarde-pop opener, to the beautiful "You Beautiful Militant", to the funny humalong goodness of "Record Store", to the "aw"-inspiring "Leonard Says", this record is irresistible. I contend that it is a true impossibility to listen to this album the whole way through and not develop a crush on one of Heather or Jonathan, the two duelling vocalists.

Whether you're someone who normally takes a superior view to pop music (like me), or someone who indulges in it regularly, I cannot recommend this album enough. Just one song was enough to melt my rock-hardened heart and make me absolutely infatuated with this album. 5, well-earned, pretty, stars.

4 out of 5 stars One seriously talented band.......2005-06-03

I first saw this seven person, twenty-plus instrument band open for the Shins, and I was hooked. This creative, youthful group fills this album with lyrically clever - and musically delightful - poppy love songs.

To see them perform is a great pleasure, and this album manages to capture and project their unique presence!

5 out of 5 stars best bubblegum pop ive heard in a while.......2005-05-01

hailing from new zealand, this group's two front runners are a couple that is in love, and sing about it beautifully in several of their songs. each track is carefully crafted with gorgeous female vocals and male vocals. this band is inspired by beach boys-era sweet rollerskateing, sip-my-soda and bat-my-eyelashes pop- you will defininitely not find a sad song here. get prepared to be filled with infectious hooks and a ton of sweet melodys that youll hum to all day (in a good way).

Band On The Run gets all the love as McCartney's best. But I like this one a little more for the variety.

The great songs are numerous - You Gave Me The Answer (the Honey Pie remake), Rock Show, Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People, Listen to What the Man Said(perhaps his best solo cut), Call Me Back Again, Letting Go, Crossroads. Heck, Paul even makes a Denny Laine vocal (Spirits of Ancient Egypt)come alive.

Medicine Jar is the only misfire here.

1 out of 5 stars 5.1 isn't always better............2005-12-13

I love Wings: Venus and Mars. I grew up listening to it. I recommend this album (LP or CD) to anyone who isn't into death metal and college satanic suicide music.

Unfortunaley the DVD version of this album was done extremely poorly. After starting my DVD-A collection with The Moody Blues: Days of Our Future Passed, Alan Parsons: On Air and Diana Krall: Love Scenes, I was expecting/hoping for the best. I figured "How can they screw up this great album, even a lot of 360 helicopter audio wouldn't make this bad!" How wrong I was. I've listened to this 5.1 album once, and even pressed my hardly used skip button on my controller during the listen. This sounds like what Jimmy Page would have done with "Whole Lotta Love" if he had 5.1 channels to play with. I wish they did a good job with the mix, but they blew it. I think this one will be eBayed....

1 out of 5 stars Looking for surround? STAY AWAY.......2005-10-26

This sounds like an amateur (maybe Paul) mixed it in his basement. A very very sorry DTS recording! Shame on DTS for letting this one out! First he's behind, then for no reason in front, to the sides, awful! Just AWFUL!! Who do they think they are kidding? If you don't believe me, or want just about the worst surround disc ever made, put this high on your list. It's just AWFUL!!

I love McCartney, and this is one fine album, but get the stereo version, this compressed and uneven disc is DOA!!

1 out of 5 stars What is this junk?.......2005-05-25

Listen, I really love Paul Mccartney and his group Wings music. Loved them for years. In general, this is one of their best lp's and one of the best classic rock lp's of all time. But, you've got to be kidding. This is without a doubt the worst DTS recording I have ever heard. In short a terrible mix. Thin, trebbly, hardly any bass response, and worse, OUT OF SEQUENCE. SACRILLAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The music is uneven and all over the place. Pauls voice is practically buried in the mix. Did someone say OVERKILL? Surround sound is one thing, but this is something else. Don't waste your money on this. The two channel version will do nicely. I'm sure Paul never approved this mix, and hopefully in the future someone will get it right. Avoid at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars The forgotten gem.......2005-05-22

This album ranks with any of Wings best work. Great music from beginning to end, especially the non Mccartney sung tracks who by the way is one of the only groups to let every member have their share of the spotlight.Rockshow still blows me away every day going to work.Great buy for 10 bucks!!!

      5 out of 5 stars In A Word.......Superb.......2002-07-04

Put the talents of a songwriting Duo together with Diana DeWitt and Mark Free[Ex-King Kobra, Signal, Unruly Child]and you have all the Ingredients of one Superb Audio Experience.

Robin & Judithe Randall are one of the most respected songwriting teams since lennon/McCartney, and rightly so.
This CD has it all...Great Songs, Great production, great Artists.

The Import price is most probably the only thing stopping you from buying it.....this is one of the best Investments you will ever make.
A Classic CD deserving its legendary status...and a perfect example of what a AOR/Melodic Rock Album should sound like.

      Perfection....Doesn't get better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Heir apparent to Heart's throne.......2000-07-28

For those whose life has been empty and devoid of purpose since Canadian sister act Heart have retired from the rock arena there now is a bright light at the end of the tunnel. This light goes by the name of Venus & Mars, which is not as one might surmise a mixed double, but a female duo comprised of singer Diana DeWitt and keyboard player/songwriter Robin Randall. When it comes to claiming the legacy of being the world's foremost female fronted AOR outfit, they are the most likely candidate. Not only do they cater to the same target audience, but what is most striking is Diana DeWitt's extraordinary voice, which is a dead ringer for Ann Wilson's. Whereas on "Grand trine" (their excellent 1994 debut album) her vocals sounded decidedly less polished, the likeness some four years later is downright uncanny !

Venus & Mars are in no way inferior to their illustrious rolemodels. Clocking in at nearly an hour, the 14 tracks on "New moon rising" rival the best of Heart's all-time classics. Apart from the top notch songwriting (prime contributors were Robin's mother Judithe Randall and one William Hanna), the impeccable musicianship and crystal clear production (for which a total of eight additional producers were responsible) make for one hell of an album. The booklet lists a seemingly endless lineup of guest musicians, who provide a solid rhythm section and tasty guitarwork to supplement and enhance Robin Randall's delectable keyboards and Diana DeWitt's intense vocals, which range from soothing to powerful. In sublime tracks such as "Dancing on the highwire", "Leave well enough alone" and "Making out like a bandit" Diana and Robin prove that they can rock with the best of them. But just as easily this terrific tandem can turn on the style and go for subtle and refined in gems like "Bless a brand new angel" and "Accident'ly on purpose". The CD also features a cover version of "The last time", a track off Mark Free's fantastic 1993 "Long way from love" album, for which at the time all songs were composed by Robin & Judithe Randall. (Like the familiar anthem "Someday you'll come running", which was included on the "Grand trine" album.) But to single out these songs would be selling the others short. Once again i'm glad to say that there are no tracks that fail to deliver.

In these Heartless times Venus & Mars have picked up the gauntlet in a most resolute and competent manner. This is melodic rock with a capital M ! Although you may be hesitant to risk the plunge considering the price of Japanese import CDs, you may be assured that this one is a great investment and worth every cent. It is one of the highlights in my collection, as it undoubtedly will be in yours.
