Gaucho [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The multiplatinum success of Aja made Steely Dan, the musical conceit of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, a household name. But that prosperity came bundled with a fateful triple-whammy for rock's dyspeptic duo: unrealistic commercial expectations, a critical backlash spawned by punk's nascent mewling, and the long-simmering meltdown of their artistic partnership. But the cool, perfect sheen of 1980's Gaucho tipped its hand to none of it. Ironically, those fashion victims who sniffed up their sleeves at Don and Walt's decadence-tinged Me Decade manifesto couldn't have had a clue that just maybe Gaucho's typically oblique protagonists had uncomfortably blurred from the third-person to the first this time 'round. At least that's what Becker and Fagen hint at in their smart-assed notes to this digitally remastered, definitive edition (all original artwork and printed lyrics restored) of the final album before their 20-year hiatus. Pristine and sonically polished (three years and seven studios worth), time has served Gaucho well. Even its sense of laconic detachment now seems but a logical bridge to the two-decade removed Dan of Two Against Nature. To their credit, Becker and Fagen didn't trash the first half of Steely Dan's legacy on Gaucho, they simply burnished it to oblivion. -Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
The Captured -Mood- of the West Side in '79.......2007-07-16
There -are- days for taking off down Sunset to the sea and playing back the mental tapes of the decaying days of The Old School. I grew up in Hollywood. My mind took several decades to escape. Nothing transports me to the canyons, the Drive, and the Way It Was like Gaucho. Don Fagen may be a native New Yorker, but he was either more LA than most of us could ever hope to have been... or just distanced enough from the cross-lit, late-afternoon seductions to see it all (at least as it was at the end of '70s) 20-20.
Gaucho is a series of mood-saturated character studies in a time capsule: Laid back flesh addicts and their "young and willing." Psychopharmaceutical purveyors as slick as Holton Valve Oil. Petulant Santa Monica Boulevardiers and their errant enteurageurs. Pseudo-successful "industry types" skipping across the tar pits of material and narcissistic seduction. All done up in the peculiar, palm-tree-lined, fin de (old rock) sicle malaise that defined the West Side that particular year.
Those of us who'd chased the dragon for a decade or more were wearing down and asking questions in '79. Gaucho captures it all "Minute-by-Minute" (or very nearly, if you're familiar with the Doobie Brothers when Michael MacDonald was in the batter's box that same year).
Fagen and Becker (and their accomplices) give this pass over the target a more consistently "smooth jazz" feel throughout than any of the previous albums, but manage to capture a musical sense of the very late '50s and early '60s, as well. Make no mistake, this is not the numbingly predictable smooth jazz of the '90s; this stuff has something new and satisfying to offer every few bars.
This is "blush" before there -was- "blush." And it goes down real smoooothe.
Great as when I heard it years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-12
Loved it before was glad to find it finally on cd after years of searching
Steely Dan takes the smooth route for good.......2007-06-08
After Aja, the Dan's first real venture into the realms of smooth, another album followed with even less intricate song structures and rhythms (aside from "Babylon Sisters"). However, the simplicity is very deliberate, accomplished masterfully, and is somewhat called for.
This album is, of course, perfectly produced and still has the same complex Steely Dan melodies and harmonies along with the catchy numbers that they pull out so flawlessly like they do on all of their albums. The A+ quality musicians on this album include guitarists Steve Khan, Mark Knopfler and Larry Carlton, drummers Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro and Bernard Purdie, bassists Anthony Jackson and Chuck Rainey, and horn players Michael and Randy Brecker along with Tom Scott and many others (including the one and only Michael McDonald). I was definitely surprised that with this all star line up, why the album was so simple and smooth, and honestly, it put me off a little, but I listened a few more times and if you like Steely Dan as much as I do, you begin to appreciate the smooth, more poppy grooves, because these guys play this stuff soooo well.
There is not much more to say but this:
Gaucho is not a necessary Steely Dan album unless you want to complete your collection. However, I do not regret the purchase at all because the songs on here are still really good, they just aren't the best or most thought out Steely Dan tunes. It's an album to appreciate for the smoothness and awesome musicians pulling off the pure smooth.
It's perfection and grace. It's the smile on my face........2007-04-25
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. This final album before Steely Dan's storied 20-year hiatus is just as ultra-smooooooooth as it gets, capturing that early-80s cocaine-infused vibe pretty flawlessly. And even after they got back to work, releasing "Two Against Nature" and "Everything Must Go" in rapid succession, they were still head and shoulders above 95% of the pop trash that passes for music these days. How unfortunate that radio programmers won't give them the time of day anymore.
Still Exceeding Cool Expectation.......2007-03-10
This album was bought on a nostalgic-for-high-school-days jag while far from home. I think this album has some of this group's strongest lyrics and melodies. "Babylon Sisters" and "Hey Nineteen" -- what great stories they are; everything you need for the end of a perfect day. Other albums by Steely Dan have not aged so well and the new stuff by Donald Fagen is a train wreck.

Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs - Gaucho Steely Dan Superb Sound.......2003-12-17
The attached is arguably the best CD Steely Dan completed prior to their breakup or since.
This is the Mobile Fidelity 24Karat Gold Version in the orignial shrink wrap.
A truly outstanding piece of jazz inflected rock/pop that is simply hard to beat if you are a fan. The sound is superb thanks to MFSL technology and remastering and ranks right up there with the Super Audio Version on the SACD Layer.
This item is a collectible and you may find it periodically on Ebay for significantly more money and in U.S. $'s.
A Life-long Gift of Music.......2000-03-08
If there is one thing I would consider myself an expert on, it is the music of Steely Dan. (btw - if you don't know where they got the name for the band, I would urge to do a little Internet digging and find this delightful bit of information.) This is the only act of whom I own all their albums (original studio albums...I'll pass on live recordings, Best Of's and box sets). For those of you fellow experts, that means I do not own the song "FM" which doesn't appear on one of their studio releases, but on the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. I was 19 years old when their "last" album, Gaucho, was released with its hit song "Hey 19." I agree with all the reviews here about this work, and I truly can't add any more insight to what these other astute fans have said. I had the great pleasure to see them live on the last night of the "first ever" tour in the summer of '93(?), and of course it remains the best musical event of my life. (I saw them the next summer, too, but the mystery of the first show was hard to beat.) I would also recommend with the same passion ALL of Fagan's solo albums. They are absolutely wonderful musical packages! I am going to get the new album today, and I don't know what to expect, but I know that these artists have given me (us) a wonderful gift that will last a lifetime.
One of the best, and in my opinion THE best, rock album ever.......1999-11-09
Gaucho is a spectacular work. The musicianship is phenomenal, the melodies and arrangements are spellbinding -- almost heartbreakingly wonderful -- and the recording itself is rich, bright and a technical triumph. Steely Dan fans won't be disappointed by the lyrics, most of which are typically arcane. If you don't like it the first couple of times (I didn't!), keep playing it. You'll come around.
The zenith of Steely Dan's star........1999-10-31
For those who thought it impossible, this CD is the cherry on top of Aja. Each cut is a tasty little world unto itself; each compelling in its own flavor; each tied to the rest by its pungent reflection of the times in which we live. The guitar in particular, both rhythm and solo, are so pristine (we're able to hear picks across strings especially well on Glamour Profession and My Rival) and well conceived as to be fascinating. None but Donald Fagen's voice would fit so perfectly. Gaucho is Steely Dan at its zenith. Sublime! This is the pop CD I'd put in a time capsule as a gift to future listeners.
Great!!! But,...................1999-05-16
Don't get me wrong, this is a great Dan album, but unlike the excellent "Aja", this CD can drag a little (especially on Babylon Sisters). If you are new to the cult of Steely Dan, then purchase either "Pretzel Logic" or "Aja" first then get this CD.

Album Description
Rivero has played the bandoneon, or square-headed accordion, since he was a child. Now an internationally known master, he performs 24 traditional Uruguayan dance pieces here in the transparent and natural style he prefers, without electronic modification. 25 tracks recorded in 1991; includes an 80-page booklet.
"Rivero offers a soulful rendition...as pure in spirit as in sound." - Rhythm Music
Customer Reviews:
René Marino Rivero.......2004-03-05
This is a very good CD performed by a first-rate bandoneon player and excellent musician and scholar. This uruguayan bandoneon player has traveled around the world with his wonderful interpretations and this CD is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Marino Rivero's art and to learn about uruguayan music as well as to listen to his special instrument which was acquired in 1930 and maintainted exactly as it came from the factory in Germany.
I attended one of Marino Rivero's recitals in Punta del Este, Uruguay and whether interpreting Bach or a piece of uruguayan tango, he always shows off as a first- rate artist. All his CDs are highly recommendable.

The Scott Joplin of Brazil.......2007-01-11
For the unitiated (as I was) you will discover a treasure here. The "feel" of the music, especially on the more lively numbers, is 100% Brazilian Samba. The interesting thing is that the pianist achieves that feel with no drummer, no percussion, no bells and whistles. It will take you to the Carnival in Rio. If you're a classical lover on a budget, this CD (or any other) on the Naxos label is a steal.
A great release of Nazareth!.......2006-01-15
I 'discovered' Ernesto Nazareth about 8 years ago while surfing the internet. I found him in a composer alphabet: N is for Nazareth, the only entry under N. I always have my eye out for Brazilian music because of fond connections there. Further, Nazareth was billed as the 'King of Brazilian Ragtime' (or some such grandiose title). I play rags (please don't call me a ragtime piano player), and I have come to object to Nazareth's music being considered 'ragtime'. Nazareth's music is unique music with complex influences of which ragtime is not one. Nazareth's music is a cousin of ragtime; both are rooted in Gottschalk. It is uniquely Brazilian music- and influenced even Villa Lobos as such. It is fun, lively, witty, teasing; Nazareth makes Joplin seem very serious. Yet, the moods of Nazareth are deep. I call the music 'Nazareth'.
Iara Behs gives us a delightful sampler, showing off Nazareth's range of moods, styles, & influences in a spirited- very Brazilian- performance. The notes she writes are as touching as her piano performances, and it is worth the price just to read her sensitive description of the man and his music. I once read a review complaining that for all that Nazareth wrote everyone records the same stuff. Iara's CD is a great blend of new and familiar recordings. Her selections demonstrate thoughtfulness and purpose. However, I wish she would have played 'Fon-Fon' as it always gives me saudades for Rio de Janeiro traffic, and only Cariocas play it right.
The CD is well-recorded, faithfully replicating piano and music. If possible, I would have chosen 4.5 stars (near-excellent) rather than 5 (excellent). While Iara's brilliant expression offsets any technical error, I find some expression- specifically some ritenutos- distracting (subtract 1/2 star).
Anyone interested in piano music of any genre should enjoy this CD. If you do not yet know Nazareth, buy this CD as a treat. If you do know Nazareth, you need to buy it.

Customer Reviews:
Way to go Bob!.......2006-11-10
I bought a copy of this CD the day it was released and never tire of listening to its bouncy, yet sensuous rhythms. And no, I'm not just saying that because I was librarian at the school where one of the performers, Bob Medina, was assistant band director!
Wonderful CD! .......2005-06-02
This is an amazing CD! And no, I'm not just saying that because Bob Medina is my former sixth grade Band Director. This really is a great CD and well worth the money to buy it!
