L.A. Woman

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The last official Doors studio album, L.A. Woman was still high on the charts when, like the "actor out on loan" of its closing track, "Riders on the Storm," Jim Morrison died in a Paris bathtub in the summer of 1971. Via such tracks as "The Changeling," "Crawling King Snake," and the frothy, rollicking title track, the collection leaned heavily toward the blues--in particular, Morrison's boastful "Lizard King" brand of it. It also holds another entry in the band's ever-adventurous tone poems in the ever-underrated mythical tale of American music and culture, "WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)." --Billy Altman

Second only to Riverdance as an international Irish showbiz phenomenon, previous installments of this Platinum-selling extravaganza have become beloved PBS standards. The original buxom quartet of female singers, Lisa, Maev, Orla, and Chloe, have duly been joined by Hayley and are, as usual, backed by a full symphony orchestra and choir, plus enough traditional instruments (the house fiddler, Mairead, is a powerhouse) to keep things legit. The material ranges from folkloric ("Dúlaman" is best known from Clannad's legendary rendering), to a standard from another Celtic nation ("Caledonia," Dougie McLean's love letter to his native Scotland), to classical lite (Handel's poignant "Laschia Ch'io Pianga"), to movie hits ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a delicately lovely, a cappella, close-harmony treatment), to homegrown New Age (Enya's "Newgrange"). Most tracks are produced to turn, presented in the aural equivalent of Technicolor or day-glo, in which colors pop while diverging ever so slightly from nature. In short, although the album offers fresh material, it covers old ground -- but this is exactly what the act's target audience expects and desires. Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. The deluxe package offers four bonus tracks, three of them live, plus a silver claddagh charm. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Irish Music.......2007-07-11

Loved the range of voices. Had already seen the show on PBS and have the previous CD and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD ever.......2007-07-10

I have never heard such beautiful harmony and vocals! The music was just wonderful! The orchestra was outstanding! I have already decided that "The Prayer" is going to be sung at my wedding. I can't help but cry every time I hear that song sung by Chloe (I have already bought the sheet music for it:))There were a couple of songs that got a little boring but for the most part it was GREAT!!! The DVD is magnificent as well! It has about 6 or 7 more songs.

5 out of 5 stars A great continuation of the first Celtic Woman album........2007-06-28

This is a CD that can be enjoyed by all who like M E H DI, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. After seeing them on PBS, getting the first CD and seeing them in concert I am hooked. These ladies can SING!
The bonus songs make the album definatly worth the extra few dollars...it includes the fun, upbeat, songs Celtic Woman performs at the ending of their live shows....I was so hoping they would put them on an album. Live or not, the sound quality is PERFECTION, they sound studio quality. I was a little hesistant at first about the addition of the new member...but she rounds the group up nicely.

I bought this DVD and CD as a gift for my husband's birthday. We saw a preview on public television and he immediately asked for it for his birthday. We already own the first Celtic Woman DVD and CD (also seen on public tv and purchased thru Amazon)and this is an amazing sequel to the original. All new music and a beautiful setting for this irish music. The women's voices are ethereal, very much worth listening to and watching over and over again.

Fueled by healthy public appetite for traditional melodies and quasi-ethnic roots, the crossover genre continues to flourish with this debut release from Ireland's Celtic Woman ensemble. The brainchild of Sharon Browne, Dave Kavanaugh (founders of Ireland's successful Celtic Collections label) and young Riverdance touring company musical director David Downes, CW's five young women musicians and vocalists offer up an ever pleasant, Eire-savvy fusion of folk, pop and classical influences. Avoiding the intrusive, club-beat/sex kitten window dressing of Bond, the ensemble tackles material that ranges from the expected (spare, lovely covers of "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria") to more adventurous fare like "Nella Fantasia" (Ennio Morricone's vocal adaptation of his rapturous theme from The Mission) and Enya's "Orinoco Flow." Elsewhere, "The Butterfly" offers up fiddle-fueled take on their Riverdance parallels (which also get a workout on the live bonus tracks), if renditions of Downes' originals like "One World" and "Send Me a Song" and "Someday" from Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame hew slavishly to the middle of the road -- which largely seems the album's easy-listening intention. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Totally Hooked!.......2007-06-27

True confession time: I am hooked on Celtic Woman . . . and it's getting worse! Or should I say better? The first Celtic Woman album I bought was Chloe's Walking in the Air, then it was Meav's A Celtic Journey, and today I finally got the group's famous blow-out debut. Several of the tracks are also on Chloe's album, so I wasn't sure if I should get it, but I'm so glad I did. There are a lot of songs I haven't heard before, and even the one's that are on Chloe's CD have different arrangements and more of a Celtic flare here. Favorite tracks: 1) Walking in the Air, 2) May it Be (so beautiful, have never heard it before), 3) Orinoco Flow (I always heard of it as Sail Away -- was so delighted!), 4) The Soft Goodbye (warm and touching), 5) You Raise Me Up (an all time favorite, and the song they were singing on TV the moment I walked into my Grandparent's house and discovered this whole new world of music!). Celtic Woman is not just for fans of Celtic music. It is for anyone who appreciates beauty, culture, and inspiration. Celtic Woman, "May it be you'll journey on to light the day."

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-06-27

Fantastic music! What a joy to listen to. And the DVD is well worth the purchase as well. We have listened to both DVD and CD many times over and even loaned them out a few times to friends. A definite must for anyone that enjoys beautiful Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars sailing away through the cosmos of my soul.......2007-06-26

Celtic woman is an album rich with atmospheric delight that fuels the flame of desire in my groin. In the still moments of the night, the Celtic Woman and I traveled starspeed through the cosmos...the cosmos of my soul. Of the stars we made a nest, and I gave it to my lascivious little girl-child with the passion of midnight lovers in a lavishing and spontaneous tryst. It was like seeing the world from the first time...so distantly from our cosmic love nest. This incandescent love affair would have been nothing without the shimmering and enchanting beauty that is...Celtic Woman.

Lush...extravagant...heavenly...enchanting...captivating...mouthwatering...paralyzing...tantalizing...enrapturous...electrifying...tearing...jolting...violating...opening...closing...raging...typing...wiping...crying...cleaning...organizing...disorganizing...energizing...regionalizing...immigrating...love-staining...bleaching...breaking...tapering...circumsizing...exhasperating...womanizing...shoe-sizing...myrrhmizing...unescaping...unleashing...power-washing...gaping...bleeding...fermenting...mummifying...people dying...niggas starving...bitches bleedin'...gettin rich or dyin' tryin'...deodorizing...and not to mention, breathing the crisp air of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-18

The Irish lass in me loves the genre. The singer in me loves the artistry. Since buying it, I have given this CD again and again as a gift to friends who love music, Celtic or otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic and haunting.......2007-06-13

Found these gals on public t.v. They are just wonderful. In a time when you can't make out most vocals of current pop music, you'll enjoy being able to understand and appreciate these lovely songs and very gifted singers.

4 out of 5 stars celtic woman- a new journey.......2007-07-15

This is a great album if you like CW. You will not find typically[traditional] Irish music; but it can be compared to a Las Vegas show.
There are some great easy-listening songs, with an upbeat twist. These
ladies do a great job harmonizing.

5 out of 5 stars 5+stars!!!!.......2007-07-13

From the moment I first heard their Slane Castle concert on PBS, I LOVED Celtic Woman's music. They all have BEAUTIFUL voices. The youngest, Chloe, is amazing. I have this CD, the concert DVD that goes w/ it, their first concert on DVD (at the Helix in Dublin), and the CD that goes w/ it.

5 out of 5 stars CD GREAT, SHIPPING NIGHTMARE.......2007-07-10

This CD, as everyone has previously mentioned, is absolutely awesome. I purchased two of the 'deluxe' editions, one for myself and one for my mother's 91st birthday. The shipping, direct from [...], was a disaster. They will say shipping dates are 'estimated,' however, they went far beyond that. I got an email after two weeks saying they were having some kind of unspecified problem filling the order and then got the product about 10 days after that. Totally unacceptable. I've always had excellent service from Amazon sellers (aftermarket), but I will certainly discourage my friends from giving me Amazon gift certificates in the future, as they have done in the past. Shame, Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Expectations Well Met.......2007-07-09

A New Journey is fun and relaxing listening...met all of our expectations. My 3 girls ages 9-14 love it and so do I.

Absolutely beautiful voice...always smiling...great stage presence! Her vocal range, I think, is larger than the other girls. She is my favorite of all the girls.

5 out of 5 stars Would give this 6 stars if I could..........2007-07-12

A blow-out production of wondrous Celtic music tha offers affirmation and comfort, especially suitable for someone facing significant challenges in his or her life. Beautifully produced... offers hours of enjoyment, where the meaning goes deeper with every hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-07-06

Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprised of five Irish and one New Zealander female artists - five vocalists (including Lisa Kelly), and one violinist. This wonderful album is a collection of 11 tracks, all the work of the incomparable Lisa Kelly. Lisa was born into a musical family, and is well known for her singing of classical and Celtic songs - she spent five years as the lead female vocal for Riverdance! I must say, this album shows off her ability to its best.

I like having nice music to listen to at work, and this album is one of my favorites. While working, I love the angelic sound of Lisa's voice sweeping out of my speakers. Overall, I found this to be a great album, one that is always wonderful to listen to. I give it my highest recommendations!

5 out of 5 stars Lisa! The best of the Celtic Women!.......2007-07-04

This is a wonderful CD, very relaxing to listen to on the porch with an ice tea in your hand. There are some repeats of her songs from "Celtic Woman" but they were my favorites anyway.

5 out of 5 stars talented voice.......2007-07-03

As with the other ladies, I was introduced to her music on Celtic Woman-Live at Slane Castle. She has a great voice and is a real entertainer. I wish that her album had been a DVD video. She is one of those singers that sounds good singing just about any song. Really liked the album and could have listened much longer. You will really like it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD!.......2007-07-16

If you like the Celtic Women you'll love this one by Chloe Agnew. She sings like an angel. It includes some of the best songs from the other CDs and includes several new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice.......2007-07-01

Chloe has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I love this album. I only wish this album had Chloe's rendition of Ava Maria. Chloe is only 18 or 19 and I can only imagine her voice becoming more beautiful as her vocal talents mature. She truly has the voice of an angel!

3 out of 5 stars her voice is too thin..........2007-06-21

Her voice not as satisfied as I expected. Bought this because I want the first song:
walking in the air. Her voice is good for this song, but for the rest of the songs, I think her voice is a little too thin, no strong emotion to support it.

5 out of 5 stars Walking in the Air - Chloe Agnew.......2007-06-20

A perfect choice of songs to showcase the talents of this young "Celtic Woman" soprano. It's a joy to listen to over and over and compliments the other solo CDs put out by the other individuals from the Celtic Women group. So much talent! I will look forward to Chloe's next solo CD.

1 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman #1.......2007-06-14

If you're going to own only one of the myriad of Celtic Woman CD's, this is the one. Yes, there's only one performer; however the range of musical selections is quite large and typical of the best fare on other Celtic Woman productions. It's become my first choice when I'm in this musical mood.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkplug.......2007-07-13

Mairead is my 15 yr old son's favorite of all the Celtic Woman ladies. My husband has nicknamed her "sparkplug" because of the way she prances and skips around on stage while she is fiddling and playing her violin. She is so talented and plays beautiful w/ such emotion in her face. We saw Celtic Woman first on PBS and I was hooked. I wish she had more music on this CD that was from the Celtic Woman Dvd's that I have.

4 out of 5 stars fantastic violin player.......2007-07-03

I was absolutely awe-struck by her music on Celtic Woman-Live at Slane Castle. The way that she moved and still played beautifully. I really looked forward to hearing Raining UP. Unfortunately, I feel that her accompanying music tended to distract from her talent. I would have preferred to have heard her given the attention so I could enjoy her playing. This album does not damage her ability at all

Mairead is the best. This is a great cd!

The smash success of Celtic Woman generated a lot of demand for more music from the talented performers, and The Water Is Wide is a rerelease of the first album of Órla Fallon, the harp-playing brunette. As the title suggests, the album is filled with traditional songs, including "The Water Is Wide," "She Moved Thro' the Fair," and "Down by the Sally Gardens," as well as traditional Irish songs such as "Aliliu Na Gamhna," "Carrickfergus," and "The Gartan Mother's Lullaby." Celtic Woman fans will enjoy hearing "Siuil a Run" again, and it also provides a different vibe to the rest of the album's steady flow of delicate loveliness. Most of the songs are Órla accompanying herself, but at only 37 minutes, The Water Is Wide doesn't overstay its welcome. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Enchanted .......2007-06-10

In all my 68 years I have never been so captivated by any one musician or group. I can not seem to get enough ! ! ! I am especially enchanted by Ms.Orla Fallon. Her personal beauty, the clear and perfect harp and her most wonderful voice have won my heart and soul. Then there is Ms. Naisbitt's outstanding performances. Absolutely and astoundingly the most energetic and captivating young lady I have ever heard or seen. The entire effort is beyond belief. I had the great pleasure to see them in person on tour here in Salt Lake City at the Ford Theater in May 2007. I wanted so much to get to meet them but they were scheduled in Denver the next day and had to leave immediately at the end of the performance. May God bless them all and keep them safe and able to continue in this wonderful tradition of Ireland. Darwin M Pope

I enjoy listening to this CD everytime I put it in. It is a very relaxing and calming experience. I have grown to be a big fan of traditional Irish music!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-28

Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprised of five Irish and one New Zealander female artists - five vocalists (including Orla Fallon), and one violinist. This wonderful album is a collection of 11 tracks, all the work of the incomparable Orla Fallon. Orla has won the International Feis Ceoil and International Pan Celtic competitions twice, and this album shows off her ability at its best.

I like having nice music to listen to at work, and this album is one of my favorites. While working, I love the angelic sound of Orla's voice sweeping out of my speakers. Overall, I found this to be a great album, one that is always wonderful to listen to. I give it my highest recommendations!

2 out of 5 stars Not a great performance.........2007-05-04

I absolutely LOVE Orla in Celtic Woman, which is why I bought her personal CD - she's my favorite of all the women performing in CW. I was expecting more of the same.. her haunting vocals similar to Siuil a Ruin, Newgrange, and Harry's Game - but no. The entire CD is her and her harp, like on Inisfree from CW - BORING. It's more fit as a CD of children's lullabys then anything for an adult.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of an angel.......2007-03-22

Orla Fallon is one of those highly gifted people who you can raise your spirits and at the same time relax you. Her voice is unbelievably lovely, as is her playing of the harp. Put the two togather and you have a CD, you will play over and over. Even small children will love her voice and gentle way of singing.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvel of Meav!.......2007-06-27

I was suprised at how much I really liked this album, as I have thought of Meav as a bit of stiff-ly professional artist, but I was amazed by the way she uses her beautiful voice, and was pretty happy with the song sellections. Favorites are The Last Rose of Summer, I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marbled Halls, Danny Boy, Greensleeves, and Dante's Prayer. Dante's Prayer is my favorite track. It is just so-o beautiful. And her coverage of Danny Boy is the best I've ever heard. The only track I didn't care much for was Celtic Prayer -- it didn't showcase Meav's voice very well, and was rather sparse. Overall very stunning! Waste no time adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-30

I have loved LA Women for years, by far their best album. They are at their best when they sing the blues. This album has been tattooed in my mind for years. I was amazed to find out it was remastered so I soaked it up. I couldnt believe my ears when I heard different versions that sound identical to the originals. Also, the sound quality and the stereo is much much better. This is a must for any hardcore Doors fan.

5 out of 5 stars Difference?.......2007-05-14

Just a quick question, I own the Perception Box Set, is there any difference between these discs and those in that set?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound Quality-Mixes Are Fine.......2007-04-24

This review is about the Rhino re-mix version. The sound quality is excellent. This is probably as close to the master tapes as we will ever come. The re-mixes are fine, and if you are expecting these mixes to be just like the old ones we've all heard 1000s of times before on Classic Rock radio, you need to set that aside and just listen. The mixes are a slightly different perspective on the music that gives the songs new life. LA Woman and Riders On The Storm were relegated to the last (inner) tracks of the LP and therefore had a lot of compression and distortion. On this CD you really hear them for the first time.

The Warner DVD Audio of this album is pretty bad, so buy this and enjoy clear 2 channel sound instead of 5 channel sloppiness.

4 out of 5 stars Near perfect.............2007-04-09

Pros:

The sound is absoultly phenominal. This should be an example of what the standard should be in re-releasing material. It honestly sounds as if you are in the studio with the band. Side by side with the original issue of the cd this blows the older version away. Everything is so crisp and clear. This should be expected with technological advances.

The price. If you're looking to update the original cds without all the fancy packaging it's cheaper to by these new issues rather than the latest boxed set.

I'm a purist at heart and don't think albums should be remixed but I'm indifferent here. The one thing that I didn't expect was the additional lyrics during "Cars Hiss By My Window". Knowing the song the way it was originally released, it threw me for a loop when I first heard it and was totally unexpected.

Cons:

None. Hands down this is my favorite Doors album. Next in line is to upgrade my Morrison Hotel cd (the 2nd best in my opinion).

4 out of 5 stars Why did they change it?.......2007-04-05

Why did they change it? It sounds good, but I didn't feel it even needed to be remastered. The 99 mixes sound great still. It seems like the vocals were pushed back slightly. I don't like these mixes as much, but maybe they'll grow on me.

4 out of 5 stars Three Great Songs From LA Woman.......2007-07-12

Melvin's Review of Three Songs From The Doors' Album L.A. Woman

1. Love Her Madly:

This song is extremely simple and lyrically sparse and seemingly a bit obvious. However, a lot of poets from the Lerner times, and one presently, Mr. Jerry F., knows quite well the ironic joke set up by this number. The whole song is a set up to this line: "Don't you love her . . . as she's walking out the door." So the rest of the song seems like a half-baked romance number, except that finally, he is showing something about the fickleness and inconsistency of our love. We often don't love her, till she's leaving, or, after she's left, we suddenly realize that we loved her way more than we thought, although we may have been incapable of love the entire time. Hence, Jerry sometimes ends unrelated songs by exclaiming, "Love Ya Madly!" and everyone smirks at the joke implicit, "as she's walking out the door."

2. The WASP:

This song is really called by fans "Texas Radio and the Big Beat. And this is a classic Morrison poetry-song, where he sings, then reads poetry, then sings again. This song also really makes Texas feel like it's still a separate country. In fact,I was driving from Lubbock to Abilene at midnight when this song came on my rental car radio. Texans understand how this tune describes the sense of vast distance and isolation. But also from this song came the great druggie phrase, "We is stoned immaculate." And being a fundamentally Southern song, a bit of theology creeps in: "I'll tell you about the heartache and the loss of God." And my other favorite line from this tune: "No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn."

3. Riders On The Storm:

This song is flatly a work of Hinduesqe Charlie Mansonism, a kind of cosmic tribute to Buddhist temporality and mandatory human suffering, with a bit of underlying bliss thrown in. The song almost becomes meolidically sweet as Morrison mentions the random murder of a family along a road. Right as we resist a concept, Morrison often ends a song with, "yeeeah," as though there is no resisting the celebration of all human fates. This song typifies what Doors keyboardist said about Morrison: "He saw things as they are, Infinite."

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential Doors.......2007-04-28

L.A. Woman's overall brilliance notwithstanding, Ray Manzarek's piano solo in the title song must certainly be counted amongst the most joyous twenty-four seconds in rock history. That ALONE is well worth the price of admission to this, The Doors uncontested and triumphant "comeback." How tragic that this album represents Morrison's swan song as a musical artist, but how essential his legacy.

The End Makes Angels Of Us All

4 out of 5 stars Closing DOORS.......2007-03-07

This sixth ELEKTRA records release by the DOORS quartet was their best since STRANGE DAYS, and as it turned out, the group's last hurrah with front man Jim Morrison.

The set's opener, "The Changeling," shows most clearly the self-inflicted wear and tear Morrison had endured over five years. "Love Her Madly," "L.A. Woman" and "Riders On The Storm" were legitimate hits-- "Hyacinth House" is also excellent. Despite the gushing of diehard fans, what's left over here is somewhat ordinary. But that was always the pattern with this group-- they'd astound everyone with a classic like "Riders" and then bewilder us with the march-beat laden "L'America." The full-sounded musicality of "Hyacinth House" would be offset by a dragging, bareboned "Cars Hiss By My Window."

From 1967 to '71, the DOORS had undergone many stylistic shifts. At any given moment they could be Top 40 hitmakers, psychedelic wordsmiths, political heralds, frothy pop artists, and here, a blues-grunge band. It's hard to imagine what else these guys would have created had Morrison lived. L.A. WOMAN seems as fitting an au revoir as any. One thing is certain: you didn't know what was coming next from the DOORS, and it's too bad we were never destined to find out.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 48:42

5 out of 5 stars Crackers--holds up so well.......2007-02-19

I've been busy listening to the Doors in chronological order, and you can definitely hear Jim aging voice here. The total product is simply brilliant: strong musicianship, great songs, and Jim's voice. Next time I'm in Paris, I must stop back to thank him.

3 out of 5 stars DVD Audio.......2006-12-07

I am perplexed. We have all heard this album. This is the DVD-Audio version of it. Why is no one reviewing that? How is the mixing, the sound quality, the speaker distribution?
