Lively live performance by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. How can you beat "Katmandu"?

5 out of 5 stars LIVE BULLET ! (Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band show the world how to rock n' roll).......2007-06-19

Recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall, !977's Live Bullet from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. Great rock classics, funky soul music, and good old rock n' roll make up the entire album. Seger, a Dearborn, Michigan native, is right at home, and that just adds to the warmth and enthusiasm on Live Bullet. Tina Turner's Nutbush City Limits starts things off with a funky rock beat. The classic Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser medley is next (this is the version that's played by radio stations). It rocks, and also has emotional significance for millions of people. They tear through Van Morrison's I've Been Working like they mean it. The definitive version of Turn The Page is here, the one you've heard on the radio all these years. Of course this is a great rock classic, one of the greatest rock songs ever. The rousing version of Ramblin' Gamblin' Man will certainly get your body moving, and it's never sounded better than it does here. The Silver Bullet Band, complete with horns, really shines on Heavy Music, and you could almost swear it was Wilson Pickett singing on parts of the song. And that's quite a complement! This live version of Katmandu rocks 10 times more than the studio version does and sounds 10 times better. In fact, all of the songs on this album do. Lookin' Back, Get Out Of Denver, and Let It Rock wrap things up in good rocking fashion, with great vocal performances from Seger, and more excellant hard rocking from the band (especially guitar). Live Bullet is a great album, full of hard driving blue collar rock n' roll, and famous rock classics from America's favorite old time rock n' rollers, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums ever made - EVER.......2007-05-15

If you can't appreciate live Bob Seger, we'll just assume you don't really love good live rock 'n roll. In concert, the man knows how to rock the house like few others. "Nutbush City Limits", "Let It Rock", "Ramblin Gamblin Man", "Get Out of Denver", "Turn The Page" and "Katmandu" ... what a performer, unbelievable cd. Always gets me going and tunes I never get tired of. Long live Bob!

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2007-05-14

3 out of 5 stars might wanna look for another live album.......2007-07-10

Nine Tonight is a very uninteresting live album. It doesn't feel like Bob Seger went out of his way to make any of the songs exciting. It's more like a feeling of Bob and the rest of the band going through the motions, or a feeling of "It's time to release a live album, and this is what we're giving you". I don't believe the band was really feeling the excitement or the energy that made much of these songs sound so good in the studio. If you happen to own these songs on their regular studio albums, you'd be better off avoiding this album altogether and just sticking with what you have. Or better yet, look into some late 60's Bob Seger, which was the absolute high point of his career.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great live album!.......2007-05-14

I bought this on LP when it first came out and it immediately became my favorite live album. So many live albums lose the balance between the music and the audience, where the music overpowers the crowd to the point where you lose the thrill of the event being "live." "Nine Tonight" carries the perfect balance here, as well as providing a nice collection of great rock songs, like "Against The Wind," "Night Moves," and "Rock And Roll Never Forgets." My only complaint about this CD is the need to shorten the final song, "Let It Rock," to fit it onto one CD. That song highlighted Seger's rapport with the audience, and the abridged version is not as good as the original. Other than that, I highly recommend this CD to all Seger, and rock and roll, fans!

4 out of 5 stars Bob Seger is best heard "live"........2007-05-07

This CD captures the experience of Bob Seger live. A must have for Seger fans.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Seger's second live album is just as killer as his first.......2007-01-12

Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band released its second live album Nine Tonight in September of 1981.
Nine Tonight was Seger's thirteenth album in total. This live album is just as good, if not better than 1976's Live Bullet.
Half of Nine Tonight, like Live Bullet, was recorded at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI (tracks 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14) in June of 1980 and the other eight tracks (tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 15 and 16) were recorded at the Boston Garden in my native Boston, MA in October, 1980.
Seger is joined by longtime Silver Bullet members bass player Chris Campbell and sax player Alto Reed (both of whom are still in the band today) and guitarist Drew Abbott (whom left during The Distance sessions). There were some changes to The Silver Bullet Band lineup since Live Bullet. First, drummer Charlie Allen Martin was paralyzed in a car accident in 1977 and was replaced by David Teegarden (whom would leave the band after Nine Tonight's release). Second, keyboard player Robyn Robbins was replaced in 1980 by ex-Grand Funk Railroad keyboard player Craig Frost (whom made his debut on Nine Tonight and is still in The Silver Bullet Band today).
The only two exclusive tracks on Nine Tonight is the opening title cut which was from the movie "Urban Cowboy" released in 1980. The track was intended for Against the Wind but the producer for the "Urban Cowboy" soundtrack album (Eagles manager Irving Azoff) had the song ready for inclusion on the album(UC). Then we segue into the album's biggest hit Tryin' To Live My Life Without You which is a great song.
Nine Tonight also features blistering live versions of tracks from Seger's three million sellers 1976's Night Moves (represented by Mainstreet, The Fire Down Below, the title cut to Night Moves and Rock and Roll Never Forgets), 1978's Stranger in Town (represented by Hollywood Nights, Old Time Rock and Roll, Feel Like a Number and We've Got Tonight) and 1980's Against the Wind (represented by You'll Accomp'ny Me, the album's title cut, Her Strut, Fire Lake and Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight).
We end the album, like Live Bullet, with Let it Rock. This version is more electrifying than on the Live Bullet version clocking in at 10 plus minutes. The CD however features an edited version because otherwise, it would have been believed back in 1989, that the track would exceed the maximum playing time on a CD or it would have become a 2 CD set (CDs can fit up to 80 minutes of music). The LP label gave Let it Rock's playing time as 8 minutes and 26 seconds but it is actually 10 minutes and 35 seconds. The CD version is only a little over 6 minutes and uses the ending of The Fire Down Below to end the track instead of the big finale.
Nine Tonight was released to massive sales as the album peaked at #3 on the Billboard album charts and sold millions upon release. The album deserves to be re-released in its full glory and can fit on one CD no problem or worse comes to worse, re-release it on two.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Bob Seger's Greatest Album of the Century.......2007-01-12

This album is by far one of the best albums ever concocted by someone in my generation...Bob Seger's as classic as they come, I'd recommend this album to my children, grandchildren etc...It's good to see him back in performance live mode, and hopefully this tour won't be his last...Brando Quin, author of "The Master Painter"

3 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-03-18

Not as good as the accoustic concert of some note, but still good. I was let down because I was expecting way more power from such a powerfull band but still I will recommend it to anyone who likes Golden Earring. A nice, long version of Radar Love was about the only saving grace this disc had to offer, and some equally long, very hypnotic cuts from the Moontan album were a nice touch too.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone.......2003-12-31

Golden Earring Live is not for everyone. If you are a die hard Earring fan, you will definitly enjoy this album. It is a honest, on the spot live recording, despite the fact that there is a extra guitar part all the way thru the recording that is not Barry Hay. Whomever did the job, however, was very capable. Barry's vocals get a bit lost in some parts of the recording, but there are many moments of sheer rock-n-roll magic that make it worth while. George Kooymans does a wonderful job of reproducing some very difficult harmony vocals with Barry. All in all, I would have to recommend it to all earring fans EXCEPT those who expect a perfect and polished product. This is a kick ass live rock-n-roll recording, warts and all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Golden Earring.......2003-12-31

LIVE is a great concert recording from Golden Earring from right about the time when they were starting to merge Outlaws-style guitar jamming with Zeppelin heaviness and Floyd-like space rock. I have had a cassette of this album since 1994, and I love it. Get this, THE CONTINUING STORY OF RADAR LOVE, and SOMETHING HEAVY GOING DOWN all at once.

4 out of 5 stars Long Overdue.......2002-04-18

25 years have passed since this double live performance from the Netherlands premier rock band, still going strong today. Great guitar & bass soloing with my favorite Radar Love version. Remaster sounds fine, except for 2 serious glitches in the recording process: a 1 second "drop-out" at 1:06 on track 2 and a "scratch" in the mix at 8:45 on track 8.

Overall, my favorite live Golden Earring ahead of "Something Heavy Going Down" and "Last Blast Of The Century".

5 out of 5 stars Golden Earring Live.......2002-03-08

I have owned this album since 1977. One of the best live recordings ever! The best version of "Eight Miles High" since The Byrds. Worth every penny!

Bob Seger scored several regional hits in Detroit and surrounding Midwest states during the late '60s--but it seemed he was destined to be a rock footnote when he recorded this live epic at Detroit's very partisan Cobo Arena in 1976. Seger had already released six Capitol LPs to little national attention at this point, but Live Bullet showcased him at his rockin' best--kind of like the Motor City's own Springsteen--and it caught on. Seger would subsequently delve into MOR dreck, and since Live spotlights a few of his greatest late-'60s and early-'70s rockers--"Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," "Heavy Music," "Lookin' Back"--this remains his best recorded document. --Bill Holdship

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars eternal music.......2006-11-01

This was what I grew up with. Seger was amazing. It was in the time of of rock at it's best. Lynard Sknyrd (spelling), 38 special, Jeff Beck, back when there was just rock, Allman Bro's, list goes on..........

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best that rock and roll can offer.................2006-04-07

If I had a nickel for each time I played this album front to back, I'd be a rich man. I've got a lot of music, of every genre, but this never leaves my cd player. When I want to rock, I mean really rock, this is what I play. It is amazing how few people know about this album and how good it is. Bob has a new album coming out in August. Early reviews are it is vintage Seger. I finally saw him live in 1996, after waiting almost 20 years to see him. What a show. Rumor is he may tour on limited schedule. Hope I can hook up.

4 out of 5 stars The Long Lively Night of Bobby, the Barking Dog.......2006-02-25

I'll be blunt: I'm picky. The guy who re-mastered this should be hung by his gonads. The original vinyl was utterly -stunning-. The sound quality of this, unfortunately, loses a -lot- in translation (which is the -only- reason for four, rather than five, stars).

"Live Bullet" hit LA FM radio with the force of a small thermonuclear device in the summer of '75. We thought we knew what "rock & roll" was. Seger's first (significant) west coast airings on KMET and KLOS redefined everything. This is the real deal: Motor City butt-kick a la Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels from start to finish.

Left coasters think of "Night Moves" and what followed this nearly a year later, but Seger's opening cover of Inglewood, California's Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City" kicks off one of the most memorable live albums ever. Never before or since, has any white man ever sounded as Barking Bob does here on "Travelin' Man" and "Get of Out Denver."

Moreover, Drew Abbot's second guitar solo on "Travelin' Man" is one of The Great Moments in Rock. (Pity it sounds like it does on this marginal re-mix.)

Metallica fans take note: The version of "Turn the Page" your guys were listening to for years and years is -this- one.

In its orginal form, "Live Bullett" was little less than life-changing. But this is all we've got, save for those with plenty of cash to lay down for some near-new, lost-in-the-closet, 13-incher... and another half-grand for a studio turn table. You'll just have to imagine how good it was on a Dual through an old Kenwood and a pair of Sansui's... when a nice high to go along with it cost about a quarter.

3 out of 5 stars Remaster Issues???.......2005-01-02

First off let me say that I LOVE this recording! For 28 years I have just dug this thing to death ... its real rock and roll ... but I have to agree with "doublehighc" (below) that there is something strange about this remastering. Yes, it is clearer, but there is an odd sometimes unsettling quality to it that pops up now and then.

Note this particular version (one of those mini LP things ... no plastic case) came out October 5, 1999 and that there was another remaster of Live Bullet released on December 7, 1999. Perhaps that was a correction? There are no negative comments concerning remastering under the 12-7 release?

Regardless, I highly recommend this album ... even with the mastering quirk this thing kick booty!

5 out of 5 stars The DEFINITIVE live concert experience!.......2004-01-01

Imagine getting off work, jump in the Road Runner with your buds (both figurative and literal) Southbound I-75 to Cobo...
You've got to push it cause you worked till 6:00!

Park and walk toward Cobo, the crowd growing larger and larger with every step you take. You pass thru the ticket gate and enter the smoke-drenched outer arena. Stand in line for beer, walk around scoping out the babes.

The crowd begins filing into the inner arena...
the lights go out, see the shadows moving into place up on the stage, the band tunes up, the spotlight on the emcee introducing the band, stage lights come on...everyone is in place.
You are you are about to witness a performance that will DEFINE the term "concert experience" for decades to come!
The opening guitar chords, the percussion and bass line kicks in... the arena came alive...it was breathing, pulsating, crushing

Close your eyes and listen to the opening ~15 seconds of Nutbush City Limits and you will be transported back in time.

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Jewel!!.......2005-02-09

I bought this album never hearing any songs on it because I love Golden Earring Live. This album quickly became one of my favorites along with "Live" and "Live From The Twilight Zone".
"2nd Live" reflects a period of basic rock and roll. The songs are not as sophisticated as the "Live" or "Twilight Zone" periods with the bulk of its songs from "No Promises, No Debts" and "Prisoner of the Night", but "2nd Live" keeps a fast pace throughout, and the songs are better live than in the studio.
The music is more of a raw rock sound with a pounding beat through most of the songs. The guitar work is in a grinding fashion, yet it is brilliant. The bass and drums are no less than fantastic.
I find "Sleepwalkin'" with its bass solo intro to be the highlight of the album. The album is great from beginning to end with Barry playing flute at the end on "Back Home". The band is full of enthusiasm and this album is charged with energy.
If you are a fan of live Golden Earring you may try this one.

5 out of 5 stars Save Your Skin is fantastic here!.......2004-12-02

You MUST hear this version of Save Your Skin. It's a fantastic, gorgeous, ever-changing song. Sleepwalking is also fantastic, with a much more rocking, stepped up pace than the studio version, even though I still love the studio version. I also love this version of Weekend Love. My only complaints are that Will and Mercy off of the Prisoner Of The Night/Long Blond Animal album isn't included (but the dull I Don't Wanna Be Nobody Else is), the version of My Town is weak, and the bass is turned up way to high so that it's much louder than the lead guitar. But the loud bass does work in the favor of some songs, like Weekend Love, giving it a more fast-paced "bouncy" feel to it.

5 out of 5 stars The real blast!.......2002-11-29

Golden Earring has always been a LIVE BAND!If their first live album didn't really recreate the power ofG.E. on stage, this 2nd LIVE really does!
Recorded on their PRISONER OF THE NIGHT tour, this live album contains lots of highly boosted songs taken from that album.
A couple of old tracks BACK HOME, BUDDY JOE bring us back to an almost forgotten period-before RADAR LOVE.
The marvelous SLEEPWALKIN' and its bass/drums duo, SAVE YOUR SKIN
(stairway to heaven's dutch brother) and the classics Long Blond Animal and Week-end Love, all in their best versions!
A REAL KILLER-LIVE album featuring the energy, the sweat and the sincerity of a Golden Earring concert.

5 out of 5 stars this cd rocks!!.......2002-11-17

i have been a big fan of the earring for decades. preferably, their stuff up to moontan. so, i was a little hesitant about getting this cd. their other live cds are pretty good, and this one has their more recent material. this cd just rocks from the first song. high energy and great guitar work. gone are their more progressive roots and more straight up rock and roll. extremely well done. my only complaint is that both cds are short (under 39' each)and could of been released as a single disk. other than that, be prepared to rock and roll all night long. highly recommended.
