A Weak Sequel To Vol 1.......2006-09-17
There was a reason why this was the last Wilburys album, it lacked the charm, spontaneity, great voice of Roy Orbison, and good songwriting of the first. They purposely set out to write non-serious music and what resulted was a mess. There is nothing on this album anywhere as good as Handle With Care, by far the best Wilburys song and for some reason George Harrison takes a back seat and turns over the reigns to Dylan & Petty and it was a mistake. Harrison was my favourite Wilbury and his voice is sadly missing from this album.
The album opens with the horrid She's My Baby. It has Jeff Lynne's handprints all over it. It is way over-produced, too ELO sounding and even Moore's guitar work can't save it. The single flopped for good reason. It is terrible and sounds so dated now and even then. Inside Out is better and it has the wonderful Harrison bridge, but the chorus is bit repetitive.
The best songs on this album are Where Were You Last Night, New Blue Moon and The Devil's Been Busy, but none of these songs are as good as most of Vol 1.
The worst are Cool Dry Place - a average Petty number, Wilbury Twist - the contrived attempt to be funny that loses appeal quickly, & the previously mentioned She's My Baby.
Roy Orbison was sorely missed here. He had the best voice in the group and he added a dimension that they just couldn't replace. But despite his absence, they still had great talent in the group and delivered a set of forgetable songs. If these guys put a little effort into writing some decent music, instead of trying to be non-serious, then this could have been a much better album. It is nowhere as good as Vol 1 and most people agreed and lost interest in the group, especially when the singles were much weaker than Handle With Care & End of the Line.
I liked this album when it first came out, but like a lot of albums when the newness wears out it just collects dust on the shelf.
Save your money and wait for the reissue which will have some outtakes. Or buy Vol 1, the much better of the 2 albums.
Classic.......2006-03-30
Much forgotten album by an underrated band. Great folk rock songs, good variation of sound, puts you in a good mood. Necessary if you like Tom Petty or Dylan.
Old time rock and roll performed by guys that love it........2005-12-09
After years of searching used music stores everywhere, I located a pristine example of this CD, and I must say that I am very happy I did. I have Volume one on my short list of frequently played music, but for some reason didn't buy Volume three when it came out. Upon Harrison's death, I was trying to buy up everything from him and really felt the lack of this Wilburys CD was going to drive me crazy.
While some over analyze things, I will go the other direction. These are just four guys that have the pedigree to allow for some ego, but they put that ego away and simply have fun with the music that they loved from the beginning. Indeed, some of these basic three or four chord rockers would fit in on some compilation disc of late `50s or early `60s rock music. The chord progression for "7 deadly sins" is so basic that it is in many of my beginning guitar books, labeled in some as the "oldies" progression, and several other songs are based on the classic I-IV-V progression that form the basis of hundreds of classic rock and blues songs.. Still, basic or not, these guys make this music work. More importantly, you can just tell that they are having fun doing what they love.
Yeah, I miss Orbison. Sure, I wish Harrison had more lead vocal time. But still, I am very happy that I could locate this fine disc. It will be played often along with Vol. One.
Now for my wish... Come on Olivia, we need a Wilburys anthology with the out takes and videos.
The ultimate group.......2005-11-05
The top 50 reviewer who gave this a 3 needs to go review some more toasters and see if he can get in the top 10 or something. This is the Wilburys! They could sit around and pick their noses and belch and still deserve 4 stars.
While this CD is not as good as Volume 1, you have to consider this one in light of the fact that Volume 1 is at least a 12 on a scale of 5 so it is possible for Volume 3 to be less than Volume 1 and still be a 5.
Other supergroups with similar levels of talent, like Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, were riddled with strife because of competing talents. The Wilburys, on the other hand, were all so good that they didn't have to compete with each other or to even use their real names. One of the biggest sorrows in rock and roll is that they never toured as The Travelling Wilburys. That would have probably been the top concert tour in rock and roll history even to this day.
These guys are great and The Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3 only gets a 5 because that's all the stars Amazon will allow.
TOTALLY AWESOME !MUST BUY!.......2005-05-25
I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A CD WITH VOL. I ( WHICH I HAD ON TAPE ALREADY) AND VOL. 3...OH! THIS IS EVEN MORE SUPERIOR THAN VOL. I, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS AN UNTOUCHABLE COMPILATION OF EXCELLENCE. DON'T HESITATE TO BUY THIS! EVERY SINGLE SONG IS RICHLY INTENSE...SHOWING A MATURITY AND NEAR GENIUS GROUP AT ITS PEAK!
