Part of a Love of a Hope That Exists................2007-07-12

Things appear.... then they disappear for your poor Metamorpho. There is so much out there and it all flows by in a wink of an eye. And, certainly there is a connectivity to things but possibly without any rational motive why. But, why listen to me when your t.v. is nearby? Metamorpho- replaced by modern flat-screen technology. What is next-you ponder? Will the world end? Possibly. But no need to fret. If you stand on this subway platform long enough, another world will surely come by to take you to new adventures.
This might be an excellent intro to this c.d. It has been in my archives for decades. Do I date myself? Please don't tell. But, in the long run, it all doesn't matter you see. This, I think, is one of the finest profferings by the Moodies. It is a mind float for sure- but such a pleasant one for certain.
Thinking about this album- what strikes me most is the need to look at the world through "The Eyes of A Child". In some ways it's a beckoning to return to the awe and simplicity of a truer, purer outlook on the world. You know the one - the one we all inhabited with joy until the cruel realities of adulthood set in. The Moodies with this outing, try to get to the essence of our realities and existence. It's not really a matter of never thinking you'd never live to be a hundred, or a million. It's a matter that you'd never thought you'd live to be a child again. And, this is what the songs convey and bring to us on this exquisite set.
The songs themselves- suggest scenarios of thoughts and dreams on all our journeys through life and each one of them hits into our concious (and sub-concious) minds on some level. We all travel on "Eternity Road", never knowing what is around the next bend. And, indeed, we all want that "Candle of Life" to burn ever more slowly. We want to learn. To grow. And the Moodies urge us to find the love within ourselves to sojourn on.
I cannot and will not explain each song on this c.d. I don't think I can. Each song touches some facet of human emotion and yearning towards some movement towards personal evolution and enlightenment. Musically, the individual songs blend into one another- some soft and yearning- some insistent and joyous. Some melancholy and some hopeful. A perfect mirroir to life itself.
But, oh what a pleasant and comfortable musical scenario they have created for us. If half of these reflections flow through to your conciousness, then, joyfully, you too are on your way to being a reflective seer. And don't forget- I do give lessons locally at your Community College via cable hook-up. There is a small service charge, of course. But who can quibble when such valuable knowledge is just a credit card away?
In any event- this is a gem and very worth your time. It is contemplative, reflective pop at it's best and in the Moodies own genre which is in and of itself.
I would definitely bury this one in a time capsule for my children's children's children's children (and then some). In the meantime- they'll have to wait. I'm not giving it up that easily!
Now- let me return to my July 4th bar-b-que. Yes it's still going on! You have to ask? Metamorpho is not a lightweight you know!

Worthy To Be Passed Down To Posterity.......2007-06-12

I cannot add anything new to the great reviews already presented here. I am just going to state that this is a truly outstanding album with nary a bad track on it. The Moody Blues were at the top of their game on every level. The lyrics, vocals, arrangements, and musicianship are superb and all 5 men made major contributions to this masterpiece.

"Children Of Paradise!" :).......2007-06-04

To start off, what a topnotch remastering job on this splendid release! :)

One thing I'd like to know is how The Moody Blues produced the sound effect of the rocket blasting off, at the beginning of Graeme Edge's "Higher And Higher?!" It was a treat, however, to find out, from the interview within the CD booklet, that The Moodies conjured up the sound effect themselves! Nice job on the "radio-to-live-in-person" effects on Mike Pinder's narration, as well as Justin Hayward's stereophonic guitar solos, near the end of the song (Best experienced through headphones). Graeme really hits home with both his poetry and drumming on this energetic album opener!

The harp like effects that introduce John Lodge's "Eyes Of A Child - Part One" are lovely, and the song does an excellent job of progressing from a peaceful tone to a more lively one, most notably through the group's combined vocals. Spooky but well executed mellotrons on this track, too!

Ray Thomas' pleasant-sounding composition, "Floating," gives me a natural high, whenever I listen to it, and Ray's heavily echoed vocals make him sound as though he is delivering the tune from The Heavens! On a rare occasion, Ray would sing in falsetto, near the end of this track!

John's "Eyes Of A Child - Part Two" sounds like an earlier version of "Question," from "A Question Of Balance," and it really rocks, too! Listen for John's brief falsetto chant, echoing the word "Light," in the middle of the song. :) Both parts of "Eyes Of A Child" are equally enjoyable, to my ears. :)

Justin Hayward's "I Never Thought I'd Live To Be A Hundred/Million" create excellent links between the surrounding songs ... The guitars are well played on both pieces and each tune sounds amazing through headphones. I get a mental image of Justin playing his acoustic guitar in a dark room lit by a single candle only, when I listen to both of these tracks. :)

"Beyond" features more amazing sound effects, in between the "rock and roll" parts of this mysterious instrumental (The second set of sound effects sounds a little like the intro to "Strawberry Fields Forever," by The Beatles!). I always thought of the rock and roll part of the song representing a space shuttle traveling to other planets, and the parts that featured the sound effects representing the different planets where the spaceship would land. :) The stereo trickery on the "rockin'" parts of this tune blew me away, featuring all instrumental activity being pushed towards one end of the stereo field and then, a little later on, being pushed towards the other end ... Another standout headphone experience!

The Heavenly intro to Mike Pinder and John Lodge's "Out And In" sounds like a continuation of "Beyond" ... The mellotrons really stand out on this track, including the beautifully soaring intro (Makes me think of sunlight beating down on my face, as I close my eyes). Mike delivers some nice vocals with his double-tracked "Out And In" harmonies, at the tail end of the song.

Justin's rockin' outer space number, "Gypsy," features excellent double-tracked Justin Hayward vocals and a wickedly cool lead guitar scattered throughout the song. Lots of instrumental activity going on here, just like on the previous two offerings, and everything blends together just right ... I love the way the mellotrons come right at you during the "Left without a hope of coming home" parts of the song! Nice arrangement. :)

Ray's "Eternity Road" includes a pretty neat "Beatle-esque" double-tracked lead guitar solo from Justin, mid song, as well as powerful vocals and a fantastic flute solo near the end of the song, courtesy of Ray ... The flute solo is just as well executed as the flute solos heard on "Legend Of A Mind," from "In Search Of The Lost Chord," and "Don't You Feel Small," from "A Question Of Balance." The ascending mellotron parts, between the verses, and especially near the end of this song, are well delivered and make for another natural high on the album. :)

Sounds like both Justin and John collaborate on vocals for John's "Candle Of Life," something they would do many years later throughout the late 1980's albums "The Other Side Of Life" and "Sur La Mer." To hear something amusing on this track, move the "balance" dial (or switch) all the way to the right channel (speaker) on your stereo system and you can hear a delayed echo from the mellotron beginning at 2:33 in the song! :)

"Sun Is Still Shining" is a nice, relaxing song by Mike, and I like how the intro to the track features a guitar feedback effect, like the one that is heard at the beginning of "To Share Our Love," from "On The Threshold Of A Dream" ... By the way, this particular sound freaked out my cat Pickles, when I played this album, recently! :) Anyway, I love the mellotron and sitar combo, and the strong percussion, featured near the closing of the song, is brilliantly executed!

"Watching And Waiting," to me, is just as lovely and enjoyable as "Nights In White Satin," from "Days Of Future Passed." My father once told me that, from what he got out of the lyrics, he interpreted that the Earth was trying to express itself, if the planet could talk ("But don't be alarmed by my fields and my forests"). It's a beautiful, tranquil, and relaxing Justin/Ray ballad, featuring marvelous mellotrons all around. The piano and acoustic guitars blend in well, and the bass guitar licks sound brilliant after the parts of the song that go, "There's no one here to stop you trying." To top it all off, Justin also delivers another "5 Gold Star" vocal performance. :)

Children of all ages will really appreciate "To Our Children's Children's Children!" Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

Their best........2007-04-18

If you are a Moody Blues afficianado, I have no new insight or commentary for you. You know the place of this album among their work.

If you are rather unfamiliar with their work, be advised that this is what many of their fans consider to be their crowning achievement.

Thematic and haunting (with its light moments). Interestingly, there is not a single Top 40 tune in the bunch. I've never tired of listening to it.

It being well over 30 years since I first heard this album (on a cassette boom box in military barracks), I realize now more than then that the title was chosen with utmost care. Of all of the Moody Blues work, they knew when they completed this that it was most worthy of being handed down through their generations as their example of achievement.

Greatest Moody Blues album?.......2007-03-15

I was utterly into the Moody Blues in high school, many a late night spent with headphones on disappearing into their moodscapes. Having passed another thirty years, though, I moved on to other things to listen to and to play, music I'd critically consider far more complex and challenging. But as for most of us, the music that touched my heart as a youth retains its power to move me -- so, turning the big five-oh a couple of months ago and feeling more than a bit ready to reminisce, I started listening to my old albums again, including the Moodies.

With new ears and a more aged perspective, I've found my preferences have changed. Sure, I still like it all. (And by all, I refer to what some others write about as "The Big Seven" or something like that, which I'd agree really comprise all they did that really matters.) "Days of Future Passed" still stands on its quirky (some would say pretentious) own (but I love it), and of course it has "Nights in White Satin". "Seventh Sojourn" is more guitar-rockish, and I like that, too. But the album that stands out, I think, is "To Our Children's Children's Children". Why? Two simple reasons: it's the most coherent from beginning to end, and it's the most "atmospherish". And what is it that makes the Moody Blues the Moody Blues more than the "atmosphere" they create?

A word on sound quality: I used to sell high-end equipment, and have a top-notch basic stereo system. When I listened to the vinyl, I reached the above conclusions despite the fact that the sound quality was HORRIBLE. That's why I decided to get the CD, so I could hear what it really sounds like. I hesitated between getting the SACD and the standard 2-channel remastered version, and got the latter. I can't speak for those with SACD systems, but for those with only two channels: the cheaper one has absolutely fantastic sound quality, no need to get the SACD version. For anyone with the album who wants to hear things they haven't heard in this before, it's well worth the investment ($8, sheesh)!

2 CD set. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even the milestone Days Of Future Passed in its elegance and vision. The Moodies were always capable of both songcraft and experimentalism, but this was the first time they combined them both successfully. Mike Pinder's dramatically arcing mellotron is the perfectly complement to the group's lush vocal harmonies, which are colored by rich acoustic guitar textures. Things open on a mind-bendingly psychedelic note with the electrical storm of 'Higher And Higher', but soon the waters calm. Justin Hayward's brief acoustic ballad 'I Never Thought I'd Live To Be A Hundred' is among the band's loveliest tunes, and it leads into 'Beyond', an ambitious instrumental that is the Moodies at their most progressive. Throughout the album, the mixture of winningly melodic balladry, poignant folk-rock and ambitious prog-rock leanings combine for what is one of the Moody Blues' most satisfying albums. Eyes Of A Child.......2007-07-10

Once again, let's start off with some of the issues raised by others. First, as far as the cover being lighter- it always was on the first editions of the album. The cover wasn't darkend until the time of reissues. For a good example of this, pull out This Is The Moody Blues and see for yourself. Second, as far as the sound being different, it's because this is taken from the old quad mix(four channel) and not the two channel stereo. To take full advantage of the quad feature, producer Tony Clarke remixed the album in late '71. To my ears, this IS the best sounding version as the sound is much clearer than even on the MoFi editions and with this version you actually get a bonus disc of alternate takes/mixes and some BBC stuff. Although, I know some will still perfer the MoFi versions as they are of the original stereo. This album has become a favorite of many and it's easy to see why. The album is strong from beginning to end. Starting with the cool blast off sounds of Higher And Higher to the wonderful and bittersweet Watching And Waiting. This is one of those albums whhere it's impossible to pick favorites. I should point out that the BBC stuff is now available on the Moodies BBC release.

Here is what I enjoyed about each of these outstanding bonus offerings...

"Gypsy" (alternate version):
Sounds like a possible remix for the 1974 "This Is The Moody Blues" compilation had the song been chosen for that release! One difference in this version is that Justin's chanting (Before the "Left without a hope of coming home" parts) is louder in the mix, plus there are no backing vocals accompanying Justin's. I love the extended chaotic ending, and I get a kick out of the laughter and falsetto chanting at the tail end of the mix, probably from John Lodge. :) Justin's dramatic final vocal, edited in places and mixed more in the background on the final version, was well delivered, as well!

"Candle Of Life" (alternate version):
The vocals sound like they have less echo coming from them, on this mix. Also, the ascending piano chords, in the extended fadeout, were the highlight for me, and they sounded fantastic, too!

"Sun Is Still Shining" (extended version):
You can hear falsetto-like backing vocals behind Mike Pinder's singing, here, which is a pretty neat addition. Also, I didn't know there was a flute on this recording until the very end of the extended fadeout, and the piece is played very well by Ray Thomas! Fantastic! :)

The remaining tracks, from the David Symonds BBC radio show, sound almost identical to the performances from "Caught Live +5" (as noted in another review) except less songs appear on this disc, and both "The Voyage" and "Legend Of A Mind" are shorter versions, as performed here. Also, on this occasion, David Symonds introduces most of the tracks, before The Moody Blues start playing, and amusingly, he sounds like he is slightly chuckling when he introduces "Legend Of A Mind," for The Moodies! :) Mono sound quality on this performance, but it still sounds magnificent!

Just like the 1997 CD remaster of "To Our Children's Children's Children," this Deluxe Edition also featured a topnotch remastering job! I would recommend this release to any Moody Blues fan or collector. Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

Moody Blues' SACDs Rock!.......2007-03-24

You may have read that the Super Audio CD format (SACD) sounds very much like listening to a good vinyl LP on a high-end audio system. My own experience with "To Our Children's Children's Children" mirrors that view. This particular CD is one of the Moody's seven "concept" albums and it finally gets the treatment it deserves in this high resolution format. The extra tracks are a bonus for Blues' fans, but the real attraction here is the album itself, and the sound is probably as close to the original session master tapes as we're going to get. Highly recommended!

Should of done a New 5.1 mix with more studio outtakes.......2007-01-16

This is one of the best Moody Blues albums from their peak of 1967-1972. I don't mind a radical remix and this is not one. But, the old quad mix they used for this release from 1972 is not good. The electric guitar, mostly the lead, is buried in the mix. They should have remixed this album from the master tapes. Why use an old 4 channel mix, done for stereo systems featuring early 1970's technology. REMIX the album in 5.1. Don't cross-fade the songs.

The bonus disc was disappointing. The 3 studio tracks they put on, Gypsy (Alt Mix with no fadeout), Candle of Life (Alt Mix with clean intro and a longer ending), and Sun Is Still Shining (Alt longer Mix) are all great. But why only 3 songs! How about an unedited complete version of "I Never thought I'd Live to be A Hundred". The song was cut in half for the album and put on both sides. How about a mix of "Eyes Of a Child Pt. 2" that doesn't fade in or out. How about a mix of "Out and In" with a clean intro and longer ending. The live BBC show is ok, but it was recorded the same week as the live album "Caught Live Plus 5". So the versions and song choices are the same. They should have released it, but as a seperate release from this. They should have added more outtakes from the studio recordings to the bonus disc. There was still atleast 25 minutes of time left on the cd with the live segment included.

I'm glad they released this, but it could of been so much better.

dissappointed.......2006-11-10

I was excited when I heard the initial seven albums would be released as 5:1 SACD's. I have a SACD player and decent sound system but there haven't been many releases that have interested me, so far. I have been a huge Moodies fan since the 70's and was really looking forward to what I thought would be the ultimate versions of these classic albums.

First of all, in spite of what the liner notes say, this is only a four channel recording- no center or sub-woofer (unless it's a manufacturing defect- I do have an amplifier with six discreet channels and Dark Side sounds fantastic). I could live with this if the mix had been well done. First of all, there's no bass. I pulled out my 24 bit remastered CD and there was at one time ample low end, but it's sadly missing here. The other major complaint is that this recording has been way over-compressed- there are no dynamics left. This is a very flat and uninteresting mix that's inferior to the CD and not in the same league as the LP, which I had expect it would be.

My original instinct was to buy all five of the albums so far released at once, but I'm glad I decided to check one out first- I only would have been five times as dissappointed.

Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The 1996 follow-up CD to For Our Children packs less romp and more hush. Although the stellar lineup includes Celine Dion, Seal, Faith Hill, Natalie Cole, Cher, Luther Vandross, and others, For Our Children, Too is really a lullaby album and its predecessor is a party record. There are more ballads, more R&B singers, and more arrangements mired in overproduction. That said, if you want a gentler collection of songs, this might be your first choice. Seal turns in a poignant rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon," while Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" shows how universal that old Joni Mitchell classic really is. James Taylor and Carly Simon's memorable hit "Mockingbird" is also featured, along with Cher doing a predictable interpretation of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from Cinderella. Celine gives "Brahm's Lullaby" her trademark Dion treatment and Luther Vandross turns the protest anthem "If I Had a Hammer" into a moving meditation on peace and equality. Did someone say this music might be too sophisticated for kids? Still, it's for a great cause. --Martin Keller

Perfect CD for all my children........2004-12-11

I bought this CD 8 years ago when my daughter was born. She listened to it each night up until her brother was born in 2002. Now we're expecting to pass it on to their new sibling in Aug of 2005. Amazing how one CD can put 3 different children to sleep so peacefully!

I was so disappointed with this CD I am writing my very first review for Amazon. The first CD in this "collection" is so fun and very charming. This one lacks on many levels.

We received this CD as a gift when our first child was born. I have bought it for all our friends who have babies since then. It contains the most beautiful renditions of many songs from our own childhood. Everyone who has received it, loves it!!! In addition, the few songs we were unfamiliar with turned out to be some of our favorites!

kids music adults can listen to.......2003-11-23

This CD, along with the original For Our Children, contains artists you know, singing songs you remember from your childhood. We had to replace our first version of this CD, because the kids played it so often that they scratched it beyond any use at all. My 5 year old son knows all the words to If I had a Hammer, and You are my Sunshine, and his favorite of all time is Puff the Magic Dragon- this version is the best I've ever heard. My personal favorite is the Elton John song about a boy who first meets his newborn brother. Stop now and go get this CD- you won't be sorry!!

Moved from cassete to CD.......2007-02-19

After 10 years of babying the cassete of this album decided to look for a CD form. Glad to have found it! Disney needs to put out this album again. A real change from the nasty kids music out today. THE BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!

Best of the best.......2006-06-21

I got this tape for my daughter 15 years ago, and still remember her imitating Little Richard from her carseat! I am also an elementary classroom and music teacher, and found this to be the most enjoyable children's tape we owned. We never got tired of it; in fact, since ours disappeared, I'm ordering a new one as well as one for my newest nephew. I encourage any parent to get one of these while they're still around!

Oldie but Goodie.......2004-10-16

I had this tape when my oldest daughter was born in '91. I wish it were still in print, so to speak. It was great having kids songs sung by contemporary artists who created fun recordings that didn't grate on your nerves after hours of listening to kids' songs. I now have a new baby & can't find my tape so want a new copy to keep us both entertained.

A superb tribute to the ultimate rock "supergroup." Perfect background sounds for long drives or long nights spent in front of the computer screen. The orchestra perfectly captures the lush melodies of CSN&Y we all love. Highlights include a very delicate "Helplessly Hoping," a foot-tapping "Carry On," and an entrancing "Wooden Ships" (I like the tribute version of this track better than the orginal!). Buy, buy! You will be pleased.

There are no more proficient or imaginative practitioners of early music than the members of the Baltimore Consort. Their programs are invariably intelligent and involving, and the performances--well, you just have to hear them. Faultless musicianship and a real sense of style characterize every interpretation and arrangement. This disc features music of Renaissance Scotland--songs, dances, airs--both lively and lyrical, serious and humorous, performed by a colorful variety of period instruments and, often, the beautiful soprano of Custer LaRue. The nice thing is, you don't have to know anything about this music to thoroughly enjoy it. And considering its origins as folk music, that's just as it should be. --David Vernier

The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of Scottish music possible.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could.

The music here has a definite Celtic flavour to it. This disc represents 'music fyne', traditional native songs, and English imitations. Scottish courtly music was influenced both by England and France, but put its own unique accent to it. Indeed, most of the words to the songs performed here are in Scots, a dialect of English that had a strong literary flowering in the sixteenth century.

The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. Music represented here is as early as 1538 and as late as 1719, nearly 200 years of Scottish musical history.

Added to the regular consort players are Edwin George (playing bagpipe and recorder), and Alice Kosloski as a vocalist (alto). The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Howard Bass (bandora), Mark Cudek (cittern and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute) and Chris Norman (flutes). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.

This is music that is interesting, flawlessly performed, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it both ancient and current at the same time. A wonderful recording, this is a real treat to the listener interested in Celtic music, Renaissance music, and folk music.

This cd is so pretty! I love scottish music, and there isn't a single song on this alphum i don't like. And that's coming from a 14 year old girl who dresses in black and listens to Marilyn Manson...@_@....eh, I always had weird tastes. I think i'm the only one my age who listens to Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey, Gackt,Morning Musume, Enya, and Bach....AHHH! what have my parents spawned!?!? . .oh, well...
I think that only a closed minded person wouldn't like this alphum (you know, people who only like modern music and only ever wear the -latest fashions' . . .[cough] . . ) But then again, every one's entitled to their own opinion....

The Baltimore Consort knows that Renaissance music is not only for the people interested in scholarly music that are studying for their finals. Of course, they are using period instruments and techniques in a very informed manner. However,they realized that the most important thing about music is find.

I'm a Baltimore Consort junkie, and this album is entirely at fault. It's the first one I ever bought, and I got hooked. The first track starts off with pipes breaking into a lively song. Who needs to understand the words? The period instruments on this album give it a different sound; it's not classical music in the way you grow up thinking (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.). It's popular music-- of a different time. Really, really oldies. It's very hard to explain, but if you're thinking about getting a Baltimore Consort album, I'd say to start with this one. It's a great example of their style, and lots of fun to listen to.

If you enjoy the musical sounds of Scotland, this album is a must-have. Custer LaRue's vocals, Chris Norman's flutes, Ronn McFarlane's lutes and Edwin George's bagpipes will transport you to Renaissance Scotland. And if you've heard these tunes before by other performers, give the Baltimore Consort a chance to show you what quality Renaissance music is all about! While this album is more vocally driven than some of the Baltimore Consort's other albums, it is an enjoyable offering that will only add spice to your music shelf. The songs here are grand examples of the fine Scottish music of the 16th-18th centuries, and will be enjoyed with perhaps as much zeal as the instrumentals. There is a fine musical rendering of the Lord's Prayer in "Our Father God Celestial" on this album, a favorite of mine. There are two bagpipe tunes, which no Scottish album could be without. Lovers of Celtic music (like me) will no doubt enjoy this album, as it is yet another by the Consort that has been played and replayed in my household.

My favorite children's CD of all time.......2004-05-04

Red Grammer is my favorite musician for young children (and adults as well), and this is my favorite of all his albums. My preschool class love to sign "Hello World" and rock out to "Bueno Appetito" (and parents love to hear them using phrases in 4 different languages). But my two personal favorites for their beauty and message are "on the day you were born" and "Starlight, Starbright". Wonderful for parents, kids, and teachers alike.

A friend of mine knew I was taking my two kids (ages 3.5 and 1.5 years) on a long car trip, and told me his uncle was a children's song musician. He dropped off a (burned) copy of this album to us to take in the car on the trip. We had never heard of Red Grammer before then. Well, we took the trip and everyone loved the album. It gets better and better each time we listen to it. My 3 1/2 year old just rocks out to it in the back of the car, singing and dancing along. It keeps him occupied the whole time it plays. We like it so much that I'm buying a legitimate copy of it, just to support this wonderful artist, and another copy to give to my son's school.

Best kids' music EVER!!.......2002-12-12

This is a wonderful, WONDERFUL collection of kids' songs! My daughters (ages 3 and 5) have been listening to it for more than 3 years -- this was the first tape my 5-year-old sang along with. They both LOVE it! We lost it over the summer and I was happy to replace it because we all missed it so much. The music is beautiful, fun, not annoying to parents, and expresses nothing but happiness. Red Grammer is a genius, and I'm glad (especially on long car trips) that we found him! Also, if you ever have a chance to see him live, do it! He does a great show!

Best children's CD we've ever bought.......2002-10-15

Red Grammer has a nice voice and plenty of musical talent, but the real stars on this CD are the songs themselves. Every one is a gem--singable, danceable, filled with messages of love and peace. I find myself humming them constantly. I'm buying multiple copies to give to my daughter's friends for Christmas.
