Wildflowers

As you listen to Wildflowers, Tom Petty's first new album in three years and his first ever for Warner Bros., you may be struck by a certain quality, new for Petty but nonetheless familiar. The predominance of the twangy rhythm guitar; the high-pitched, nasal singing; the irresistibly catchy pop hooks; and the melancholy lyrics straining for a spiritual significance just beyond their grasp--all these elements make Petty sound as if he were a Beatle imitating Bob Dylan. Then you may realize that Wildflowers resembles nothing so much as a George Harrison solo album. That's not such a bad thing; Harrison (Petty's old bandmate in the Traveling Wilburys) has a knack for giving moody spiritualism a pop tunefulness. It's just that Harrison on his own is a second-tier rock & roll figure whose best work is long behind him, and that's pretty much the case with Petty as well. Only with appropriately reduced expectations can one enjoy Wildflowers for what it is. --Geoffrey Himes

Dear Amazon,

Mr. Himes review of Mr. Petty's work is snarky and shallow. His characterization of Petty & George Harrison (two of the all-time greats) as "second tier" is condescending and uninformed. As a frequent customer who is a Harrison & Petty centric rock fan, it's a turn-off to read drivel such as this.

5 out of 5 stars music doesn't get any better.......2007-05-31

Wildflowers truly is a wonderful album. The thing that makes the album so great is the fact that Tom Petty really gave each of the songs a personal message that just about ANY one can relate to. Every song has a meaning that's worth listening closely to.

Whether it's the rockers or the ballads or just the pretty songs, there's something here for everyone. Everybody knows Tom Petty is one of the most easily likeable musicians in the world of pop music, and this album further proves just how enjoyable his music is. He's good at what he does, and he continues to show the world his style with overwhelmingly positive results just about every time.

Kick back, turn the lights off, and just listen to a personal journey and probably the best album Tom Petty ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest albumn ever released.......2007-03-10

Every single song on here could be on a greatest hits record. It just shows all the ranges of Petty, from slow to folk to faster rock. Simply incredible, if you have any interest in Petty you must own this record.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up Time!.......2007-01-24

This album came out when I was a sophomore in high school way back in 1993-94, and I had a musical epiphany of sorts. At that time, I was aware of Tom Petty but this record broadsided me like a brickwall and suddenly I began to explore his remarkable musical legacy. More than a decade later, this album is still close to my heart and has guided me through various periods of my life. Simply put, this is a cd that absolutely no Tom Petty fan should be without. Some of TP's greatest tunes are on this cd-"It's Good to Be King" which has some of his most poignant lyrics: "I'll be king when dogs get wings, can I help it if I dream from time to time." Other classics include the title-track, a truly beautiful love song, the perennial live track "You Wreck Me", and also one of my personal favorites, "To Find a Friend": "And the days went by like paper in the wind, everything changed, and then changed again, it's hard to find a friend." I also had the rare leasure to hear Tom play "Crawling Back to You" in 2005, which suggests that it is one of his favorite tunes. The last track on the album, "Wake Up Time," an introspective piece featuring piano and strings, is a profound song that asks:
<
"You spend you life dreaming, running around in a trance
You hang out forever and still miss the dance
And if you get lucky, you might find someone
To help you get over the pain that will come
Yeah, you were so cool back in high school, what happened?"

I guess we're all still wondering what has happened, and where the time goes, and if we make the most of the opportunities life gives us. Some of the most haunting and touching lyrics ever written by Tom Petty or any other songwriter close out this album:

"And if you follow your feelings and you follow your dreams
You might find the forest there in the trees
Yeah, you'll be alright, it's gonna take time, but now
Who could have seen you'd be so hard to please somehow
You're just a poor boy, a long way from home
You're just a poor boy, a long way from home"

Buy this album today: it will change your life!!

She began her career as a folk formalist. Her clear, clean diction and perfect pitch wedded to both age-old folk songs and modern upstarts (Dylan, Eric Andersen) cast her as an immediate authority. With In My Life and Wildflowers she began to shift away from pure folk and into art song. Arranged and conducted by Joshua Rifkin, the disc's orchestration adds a suitable grace to Collins's high seriousness. Joni Mitchell's two compositions are further softened, while Leonard Cohen's three songs sound positively biblical. Toss in a Jacques Brel piece and a 14th-century Italian ballad, and you have the perfect formation of Collins's aesthetic before it congealed in the middle of the road. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars "WILDFLOWERS": JUDY COLLINS' ARTISTIC SUPREMACY.......2006-12-14

Judy Collins' "Wildflowers" is the epitome of avant-garde chic. It was released in 1967 and Judy obviously had the artistry, musicianship and nerve to release such an daring album, in the process paving the way for the modern "art-song", as "Wildflowers" straddles the gap between popular and classical music.

Recorded entirely backed by orchestral instruments, Judy Collins' "Wildflowers" contains songs which the artist presents with a classical aire yet still somehow have a popular music accessibility to them.

On "Wildflowers", the songwriting is particularly strong: Judy chose and combined material from a then unknown Joni Mitchell ("Michael From Mountains", about an elusive young man, opens the album and "Both Sides, Now", with it's glorious harpsichord arrangement, became a big hit single); Leonard Cohen ("Sisters Of Mercy", the trance-like "Priests" and the vocal harmony-layered "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye" are each one more beautiful than the other!); the legendary French composer Jacques Brel ("La Chanson de Les Vieux Amants", sung in French); and a traditional 14th century Italian chant ("A Ballata di Francesco Landini" - honestly, I don't know where she digs up some of these interesting pieces!).

At the advice of her fan, then friend, then ultimately mentor, Leonard Cohen, Collins had just begun songwriting herself; and the album is rounded out by her very own first three compositions: the abstract "Sky Fell", the imagery-laden "Albatross" and "Since You Asked", all three beautiful and polished, sounding like the works of a seasoned writer.

All of these songs are further enhanced by Judy's wonderful singing. While being technically proficient, her vocals have a warmth and sincerity which brings each song full circle by making them resonate with the truth of the subject matter, lending an understanding to the listener.

"Wildflowers" is a magnificent album which does, indeed, stand up to the test of time: it is still a fresh bouquet all these years later.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Bouquet.......2006-10-03

JUDY COLLINS is one of the very few female folk soloists to not only retain a strong popular following, but who rose to the level of "superstardom". She realized her wish to sing "art songs" with an accompanying achievement of seemingly going from an alto to soprano. Compare her early work (Judy Collins, In My Life, etc.) to the music that followed. Her original material comprises much of her repertoire ever since the transition in the 70's. Calling Leonard Cohen a "mentor," Judy Collins often includes his songs on her CD's. Her latest, Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen is testament to that.

"Wildflowers" is one of Judy Collin's best.

My favorite Judy Collins album of all time -- each song a gem, including 3 by Judy herself, 2 penned by Joni Mitchell, and 3 written by Leonard Cohen. I first found the LP in the late 1960s (I still have that record!) and was delighted to find the CD, taking the opportunity to purchase 3 more CDs by Collins at the same time. Collins has a beautiful voice, and before Enya and Celtic Woman, Collins had that lovely, lilting sound. This is music I have loved most of my life and will continue to enjoy for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Wildflowers by Judy Collins: A Meticulous and Melliflous Offering by a Folk=Rock Princess.......2005-11-20

Judy Collins I remember, was around when I always had a guitar in my hand and my hair always touched my shoulder. Judy was there in the beginning; Gerdes Folk City, the Cafe Wah, Dylan tramping around on W. 4th street, Sullivan and Bleeker and me-I was in the Fountain strummin away and tunin' out. This partcular album focuses on the typical Judy fare, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell material spun in an unpretentious and totally innocent delivery, the clarity of which is a stand alone Judy trademark. Judy is my age presently, maybe a little older. She looks more conservative now and is showing the paunchy, matronly facade of a senior citizen as she should. But I will always remember the exceptionally attractive, pleasingly slim folk singer who captivated me with her wonderfully crafted cover songs and impressed me with her powerful entree with the Dylans, Crosby Stills and Cohens of the imperial folksinger's castle where only the elite may reside. Purchase Wildflowers by Judy Collins and go back to a time when Love was in the air and your hair touched your shoulder.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Judy's two best albums.......2007-02-23

I own each of these albums separately and have just discovered that they are now combined into one. If you don't already know these albums, I highly recommend them.
Judy is well known as the champion of Leonard Cohen's songs, and she does them beautifully. My favorites ones by Leonard Cohen - on these albums - are "Priests" and "Bird on the Wire".
Judy can write songs, too. Note especially "My Father".
Sandy Denny's song "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is my all-around favorite - one of the greatest songs and performances of all time, IMO.

5 out of 5 stars Corporon does it again!.......2003-08-27

Yet another success from the Klavier Wind recording project! As a member of a university wind ensemble, I greatly appreciate Klavier's dedication to recording new music for wind ensemble, a previously neglected medium. The selection of pieces on this recording is good and Corporon's interpretations are excellent. I have never heard such a flawless performance of "Lincolnshire Posy" which is quite difficult standard band literature. I was amazed by the "Concerto for Solo Percussionist." The composer, William Childs melds classical and jazz styling in a very effective way and the solo work is jaw-dropping. And, of course everyone will love "Cartoon" by Paul Hart. This piece brought me back to the classic cartoons of my childhood. This CD is definitely a must-have for anyone interested in wind band music.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended North Texas recording.......2000-05-23

Klavier Records, with its extensive holdings spanning a wide range of recorded music for various ensembles has never failed to please, especially with its wind band recordings. Of all of its Cincinnati and North Texas recordings to date, "Wildflowers" is definitely one of the best. The disc's contents display both of the Klavier Wind Recording Project's primary goals - the identification and preservation of the standard repetoire and the promotion of contemporary music.

Opening with self-taught composer Ernst Toch's delightful "Spiel," the clarity and balance of the North Texas Wind Symphony is readily apparent. Composed in 1926 for a series of festivals organized by Paul Hindemith, Toch would later go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for his "Third Symphony" in 1956. The first of Eastman faculty-member Joseph Schwantner's trilogy of wind band works, "and the mountains rising nowhere," follows. Having taken its name from a poem by Carol Adler, the work is scored for amplified piano, fifty percussion intruments, winds, brass, and string bass. Glass crystals can be heard as well, contributing to the ethreal sonorities of this highly interesting work.

One of the monuments of 20th century band literature, native-Australian Percy Grainger's "Lincolnshire Posy" is given an excellent performance here by North Texas. The work itself, described by Grainger as a collection of "musical wildflowers" is based on folksongs that he collected during his travels in Lincolnshire, England between the years 1905 and 1906. Each movement is intended not only to present the folk material, but to weave each individual singer's personality (those that Grainger encountered) into the settings as well. While many recordings exist of "Lincolnshire Posy," including the popular Eastman Wind Ensemble/Frederick Fennell rendition, a certain inherent beauty lies within the North Texas sound - lush and full with a dark, sonorous quality during every band tutti.

International Sudler and ABA Ostwald prize-winner Dana Wilson contributes his 1992 "Dance of the New World," a work that in the composer's words "...captures the spirit of awakening and burgeoning that resulted from his [Christopher Columbus'] journey." Employing Latin American elements, this nine-minute compostion contrasts nicely with the Grainger that precedes it. For those interested, although I have not actually heard it, Wilson's award-winning "Piece of Mind," a work highly touted by critics, has been recorded by Corporon and the Cincinnati Conservatory Wind Symphony on the Klavier disc Made in America (KCD 11051). USC alumnus and jazz pianist William Child's "Concerto for Solo Percussionist," commissioned and performed here by renowned artist Steve Houghton features various percussion instruments in its three movements, concluding with an unabashedly jazzy Presto for drum set. With lots of rhytmic interplay between soloist and band and moments of serenity and reflection within its seventeen minutes, I was able to appreciate the work more and more with repeated hearings.

To conclude this superlative disc, English composer and TV tune-writer Paul Hart's "Cartoon" brings Wildflowers to a rousing finish. Inspired by cartoons and the music behind them, the listener is led through a genuinely entertaining musical romp. With its big, Gershwin-like main theme, "Cartoon" holds universal appeal for all music-lovers. Too bad Carl Stalling himself didn't pen his creative work into a band piece; nobody did it better.

If you're looking to buy one band CD, make it this one. I can't emphasize its quality, variety, and aesthetic value enough. North Texas turns in excellent performances here under Eugene Corporon. With the huge array of classical recordings and products out there, it's often difficult to choose something worth your money. Nothing is more frustrating than shelling out 17 or 18 bucks only to find that you've brought home a snore, or worse yet (for you band aficionados), an unimaginative rehash of band music that should've been left on library shelves. You won't feel jipped or bored at all with Wildflowers, one of the true jewels in all commercially-recorded band music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully played collection of music!.......1999-02-16

This is a collection of music superbly played by very gifted artest in music. I have played this music and nothing is like the quality of music heard on this CD. A must by for High School teachers and anyone who loves the classics of Wind Band music. Eugene Corporon is a genious for putting this collection of music together. I give it major props.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of old and new band literature!.......1998-10-21

I picked this CD up in order to have a recording of some of the pieces I had played while a member of the University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble. I was pleased to see three of my favorites listed on one CD: Lincolnshire Posy, ...and the mountains rising nowhere, and Cartoon. However, the other selections are equally worthy of the listener's time. This is a great compilation of traditional (Lincolnshire Posy, Spiel), modern (Dance of the New World, Concerto for Solo Percussionist), and cutting edge (Cartoon, ...and the mountains rising nowhere) wind band literature. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone seeking wind band music, whether a beginner or a long-time aficionado.

5 out of 5 stars Songs sure to bring hope, happiness and total peace.......2005-08-30

On her album Wildflowers, Genie presents a selection of delightful love songs. These songs do not only address romantic love, but also love of pets, family members and God. All are heart felt, absolutely sincere, and very lovely.
At the center of each piece are Genie's simple yet passionate lyrics, delivered in a voice that is sweet as birdsong, delicate as flower petals, and gentle as newly fallen snowflakes. Nestled around Genie's voice are softly lilting guitars, synthesizers, and Genie's lovely piano playing.
The title track, "Wildflowers", is dedicated to Genie's grandmother, and speaks of childhood days, growing up, and the love of a grandmother for her grandchild. "Quiet Place" includes a fragile and beautiful melodic line, and is an achingly lovely song about finding serenity while living in a harsh world. This piece also contains one of Genie's strongest and most passionate vocal deliveries.
"Someday" is a wistful song, again, about waiting for a time of serenity and peace, while "Undying Love", dedicated to Genie's parents, is a lovely piece about the bonds and boundless love between parents and their children.
"Ariel" is a lullaby like piece that Genie penned for her dog. The gentle "You Steal My Heart Away" is a favorite of mine, which Genie wrote for her future child. It includes a melodic guitar, and a dreamy delivery with all the passion of a future mother in it. Truly lovely.
"Sailing Angel" is a soft, lilting, piano driven instrumental, and a definite album highlight. "I Love You More Than Life", "Life's Winding Road", and "I'll Always Love You" are beautiful pieces, and all would make delightful editions to a wedding or any special occasion. And "Streams In The Desert" is a wonderful piece about miracles and God's love. The final song, "Lora", is a gentle, positive and hopeful song about solace, healing and the grace found when you are truly loved by others.
Following "Lora" are instrumental versions of all the vocal tracks, wonderful to sing along with or simply relax to. The final piece, "Trees", is a poem read by Genie at age eight. It's a sweet way to end the record.
Wildflowers is a lovely and endearing album that discusses the glory of love. It is soothing, sincere and straight from Genie's heart to her listeners. A beautiful album, which can be enjoyed by everyone. It will bring hope, happiness and total peace. Highly recommended!

Even so, get the Genie 4 CD Box set instead of this. This title is one of the four in that set. Genie makes angelic and pristine music. It is very calming and spiritually satisfying. I highly recommend the 4 CD box set. Get that, and you will have a nice little Genie collection. It's a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Wildflowers beats ENya.......2003-11-27

For a long time Genie has been my second favorite artist next to Enya.

Now Genie has caught up and passed Enya.

Mostly because Genie writes even better songs than Enya. They touch my heart like nothing else in the world.

You just have to have this CD and share it with all of your loved ones.

Like funk? Like jazz? Like film scores? Buy this album. This is simply breathtaking. It is both party music and contemplative music, with layers of instruments so deep it requires multiple listens just to fully "hear" each song. Over twenty musicians collaborated on this project, and not a single one of them strays from the tightly orchestrated rhythms and flowing melodies.
This is easily the best album of 2004. Also be sure to check out the other Now-Again releases for more funkified music of superb caliber.

In the mid-1970s, a jazz renaissance blossomed in large New York loft spaces that the musicians had reclaimed from the depressed blocks of the trendy Soho and Noho areas. The Wildflowers sessions, originally released on Douglas on five LPs, captured performances by almost 100 musicians in numerous configurations. The recordings were made over two weekends at the most famed of the lofts, Studio Rivbea, the home and workspace of saxophonist-flutist-composer Sam Rivers and his wife, Beatrice. Rivers orchestrated the lineup, played host to patrons, and performed as well. The sessions featured many figures well-established in New York, including Rivers, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and pianist Randy Weston, but they also attracted players from the seedbed of so much African American aesthetic jazz exploration in the 1960s and '70s, Chicago.

In addition, Rivers invited to town some key players from Philadelphia and New Haven; there were several newcomers to New York, too, including, from out West, a very young David Murray. The music all had immediacy and urgency fitting to the aesthetic task at hand--to consolidate the gains of the free-jazz and New Thing movements of the 1960s. Indeed, many of the players remain key figures today in that project: Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, and Leo Smith among them. In addition to their performances, highlights of the package include Rivers's radiant meandering over his composition "Rainbow"; pianist Weston's impassioned homage to his father; and performances by important, but often under-recognized innovators, including saxophonist Ken McIntyre and pianist Dave Burrell. Here is a seminal document in American music. --Peter Monaghan

5 out of 5 stars Indespensible Snapshot of a Creative Time!.......2002-11-11

There are moments in artistic history where time, place and people all combine to create something unique and almost legendary. You could think of Florence or Venice in Rennaissance painting, the Bloomsbury group in England, the Second Viennese school in 30th century music, the list could go on. This CD documents one such time, though one that has not gotten the coverage outside of jazz circles that it deserves....The 22 tracks on this recording, recorded by some of the biggest names in avant-garde music as well as some who have remained obscure, document this period of intense creative ferment as nothing else does.

This recording, originally released on the Douglas label as a 5 album set, was recorded over a weekend festival in Sam Rivers loft, Studio Rivbea. Many great names are here, Anthony Braxton, Rivers, Jimmy Lyons, Air, Randy Weston, Marion Brown. And many people on this album have disappeared on record...Michael Jackson (no, not that one) gives a terrific performance, yet he remains almost unknown today. Not all of the music on this collection is equally inspired. Some of it wanders, some is less than compelling. But what works is electric. Highlights include the terribly underrecorded Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre doing his composition Jays...avant-garde meets Sly Stone, one of the first really successful applications of Ornette's Prime Time concept. (It's important to remember that, though Prime Time's first album was released in 1977, Ornette had recorded the material several years earlier and had been performing at his own loft frequently.) Sam Rivers is characteristically searing on Rainbows, a marvelous trio performance. Sunny Murray's ensemble, The Untouchable Factor, features the miraculous Byard Lancaster on alto, performing on two cuts, including a haunting version of Over the Rainbow. Sun Ra trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah leads a groups with another underated performer, Charles Brackeen on Blue Phase. Julius Hemphill's funky ensemble features Prime Time guitarist Bern Nix in an extension of the harmelodic concept that would eventually morph into the 80s no-wave style. Roscoe Mitchell shines in a trio setting with two drummers. And Hmmiet Bluiett leads a septet featuring Ola Daru on an almost New Orleansian slow blues...you can feel the ghost of Sidney Bechet in Bluiett's clarinet.

The music is marvelously diverse. For those who think of the Avant-garde as uniformly chaotic, this disc challenges that notion. Randy Weston plays a marvelous boppy tribute to his father. Dave Burrell is also suitably traditional. Some of the guitar based groups show the influence of jazz-rock, but with a rawness that the more mainstream groups never achieved. (Abdullah's Blue Phase particularly impresses as something you wish Freddy Hubbard had tried, rather than his warmed over funk.) And for fans of New York Energy playing, there's Andrew Cyrille's group which is as frenetic as any set by Cecil Taylor.

This time in jazz unfotunately didn't last. ...And, with the advent of the Marsalis Mafia, most of these players retreated from general public view. This is really a shame, since much of this music is really commercially viable...unlike late Coltrane or the "free" music of the 60's, 70s avant-garde is much more varied, modal, and structured. The "skronk" factor is less strong, or at least less chaotic, and yet the creativity is intense.

So this disc is essenstial to anyone willing to re-evaluate this period in music. There are unexpected delights all over the disc. And as a time capsule, it's unique...comparable to the early bop bootleg recordings or the Coltrane Vangard sessions. It captures more than just the music...it captures the entire ambiance of the time. Would that we could recapture some of that creativity in this era of warmed over Art Blakey licks!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampler For The Price.......2002-03-20

This set is a great document of the loft scene of the early 70's as well as a good introduction/sample of a lot of the great, but somewhat lesser known players of this music. There are a lot of these guys out there, and most have a lot of recordings, so it could get kind of expensive to go out and buy a ton of Cd's by a bunch of these artists to see what they are/were doing. But, with this set you can spend a little over 20 bucks, and be able to check out what guys like Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Leo Smith, Marion Brown, Randy Weston, Oliver Lake, Byard Lancaster (the list goes on, and on, and on) etc. sound like. All in all, I think it's a great way for someone who is familliar with the major creative forces of this music (Cecil Taylor, Ornette, Sun Ra, Coltrane etc.) to dig in a little deeper and get a good taste of some of the lesser heard (but just as relavent)players without draining your wallet. One more thing I should mention is, if you see the names and think (like I did) that this is just gonna be hours and hours of a crazy, nonstop, OUT THERE blowing fest, you'll be surprised! There is actually a lot of really beautiful, interesting, organic music contained herein (especially on disc 2) as well as a good helping of the more full throttle energy music that you were expecting. It shows you that these musicians knew how to make the most of the instruments, of their bandmates/ensembles, as well as the music the've been given. HIGHLY RECOMENDED FOR THE MONEY!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed musical experience.......2000-10-04

My critical comment is - go for it. The rest is mainly "gush" and if that's not for you, stop right here. Since 1979 I've had a great affection for this beautiful music, and my love for it came back with a rush on hearing Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Chris White on Electric Bass and Jumma Santos on drums on the opening track on Disc One, a piece by Mr McIntyre called JAYS. But the wonder of these 3CD's which contain the original 5LP's is that the music is completely at one with the evolution of the search for freedom which Afro-Americans had sought throughout the 20th century. It was recorded just post Vietnam, another white man's folly, with Mr Ford in the White House. Up until the 1970's the great artists of that century's most important musical development were celebrated as entertainers (Louis Armstrong) or patronised as upmarket nightclub performers who adopted the titles of European royalty (Duke Ellington). But with Sam and Bea Rivers, among others, the best of the new players (artists) broke free of the commercial imperatives set by record companies, broke free of the musical boundaries set by Tin Pan Alley and the European tempered scale, broke free of musical fashion of the day - fusion, rock, whatever - and played what they felt and thought freely. There was no turning back. Many had shown the way, in their way, including Louis, and Duke, but it was an audacious move to release 5LP's of improvised music featuring no single well known artist instead allowing the young artists themselves to determine the content, and course, and duration of the music. This democratic decision by the producers Sam and Bea Rivers and Alan Douglas of Douglas Records resulted in one of the best live recordings ever, capturing the excitement of the moment with technical fidelity. Mr Rivers is a musical and social hero of mine and his work on this release - RAINBOWS- rivals that on my favourite single CD of his STREAMS which is another live recording. Note also that Mr Rivers, forever modest, leads on only one track of the 22 that are on these 3CD's. Some of the greatest musicians in the music are featured - Ken McIntyre, Sunny Murray, David Ware, David Murray, Dave Burrell, Julius Hemphill, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Jimmy Lyons - but less well known excellent musicians include Phillip Wilson (drums) Lyle Atkinson(bass) Karen Borca (Bassoon) Khan Jamal (vibes) as well as the social historian, essayist and critic, Stanley Crouch (drums). The greatness of this music is centred on the fact that it was the direct and heartfelt expression of musicians who were proudly taking a lead in their field in their time in the greatest battle that can be fought - the one to be free. These 3CDs are an essential historical document as well as a beautiful musical and spiritual experience. Not to be missed. PS. Dig Sonelius' Smith's solo on THE NEED IS TO SMILE (CD1, Track 6) or Byard Lancaster's wry solo on OVER THE RAINBOW (CD1, Track 3) or Ken McIntyre's beautiful flute solo on NAOMI (CD1 Track 7) but I have to say EVERY track has its moments.
