Eldorado [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A concept album about the fantastic world of dreams, Eldorado may be the Electric Light Orchestra's most fully realized recording. Combining the grand, sweeping vision of founders Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood with the craftsmanship and outstanding production values that marked the megahit albums A New World Record and Out of the Blue, Eldorado is a near-perfect fusion of rock & roll with a full orchestra. While newcomers won't necessarily find much here in terms of standout tracks, true ELO fans will know that this merely demonstrates the quality of the album as a coherent whole. Digitally remastered, it sounds better than ever. --Robert Burrow

One of my Top 5 all Time Favorites.......2007-06-28
I loved the MOVE and glided gracefully into ELO. This album in 1974 became "the" album of the seventies for me. I listened to it so often I own three vinyl copies. The first one I wore out, the second one I bought to take it's place and a third one I have is still sealed (Saw it on sale in the 80's at a cut rate price and bought it for a time when copy #2 got too noisey). If you ever liked even one ELO song you must own this CD. It is Jeff Lynn's ultimate work. His lyrics take this character from the real world back and forth to the dream world he would rather live in. I always thought that the character dies or commits suicide by the last song as he sings about not coming back to the real world. This is my interpetation not Jeff's.
Amazing!.......2007-05-16
This is a great one- possibly my favorite from ELO, even though I love "Face The Music", "Out Of The Blue" and "A New World Record". The title track is breathtaking and delightfully well-written - but then again, so are all the other tracks! Listen for The Beatles in "Mister Kingdom" - Jeff Lynne mentioned that this was his "Lennon track" - it sounds compellingly like "Across The Universe". The extra tracks are great and very revelatory. I wish "Dark City" were longer! A fantastic album from fantastic band, headed by a underrated and fantastic musician!
Dreams........2007-02-24
I grew up with ELO. Although 'Out of the Blue' may be their signature album, 'Eldorado' was their climax. If you just want to listen to fluff, pick something else. If you want to understand what this rock group was about, and 'feel' their music, pick this album. The music is filled with the magic of 'dreams.' Think, 'Phantom of the Opera' in ROCK!
Nice To Lsten To.......2007-01-27
This is such a nice album to listen to. It' sort of like a fantasy and Jeff Lynne wrote some wonderful music, but if you're expecting some "jump out of your seat" great-hook songs ( with the exception of "CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD") that most people are used to hearing from ELO, you won't find it here. While this album is a good work of art by Lynne and the gang, just like it says on the title A SYMPHONY BY ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, that pretty much sums it up and Lynne does a good job here. If you really like some orchestral music, in the realm of scores (which I do) then I highly recommend this, but if you the more cemented ELO sound, then I suggest FACE THE MUSIC as a good start.
Highlights: "ELDORADO OVERTURE","CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD","POOR BOY GREENWOOD","ELDORADO" and "ELDORADO FINALE & INSTRUMENTAL MEDLEY"
Conquering the ^^^MOUNTAINS^^^ of my inner musical landscape ..........2006-11-23
Today from one of my favorite long-term look-outs ... HIGH ON A HILL, IN ELDORADO))))))))
Don't laugh, this is one of the most magic-filled, melodic & memorable albums of the 70's in my opinion ("I CAN'T get it out of my head", damn that song for being overly infectious). Music like this does repel evil! This guy has such an ear for bridges, choruses, hooks, tie-ins and hopelessly dreamy anthems that you are left at the end gazing at your ruby red slippers in an unshakeable golden-glow trance. What a perfect blending of the technology (i.e., lots of Moogs, etc.), instrumentation, emotion and songcraft of the era.
The (30 piece) atmospheric orchestra with resonating cellos and booming lower register contrasting with the electric guitars (I enjoy his focused, structured playing), violins and Lynne's oddly soothing singing (and falsetto choruses with 20 piece choir in spots) ... "THE LOVE OF AGES FILLS THE HEAD" (Overture). The tradition of great music craft is respectfully channeled, albeit more simply for the pop song structure. Eldorado WILL take you on a journey if you let it, and messages shared lyrically (yes they are included with notes from lynne on meaning) add depth and timelessness that can't be ignored:
"The city boys and the country boys, They come from miles around. To defy their King and country, Save the poor folks from the hand, Of thieving dukes and abbots, And the gentry of the land" (Poor Boy - One of my favorites by ELO).
"One thing I have learned through these years, Is that no man should be stricken with fear - It should be that he walks with no care in the world. So my friends that are gathered here today, HEAR THIS CLEAR, for I'll not further say, That NO MAN shall cause me to take up arms again" (Boy Blue, a catchy and brilliant song with a good message).
"...IN BETWEEN THEIR LIES, THE PLACE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES" (Instead of the North & South, a recent parallel presents itself??? We shall always dwell in Eldorado it seems, the Earth spins round @ and never slows down).
This was my first ELO album and helped ignite a lifelong musical love affair with prog-rock for me (I did love the Beatles, Moodies and Elton when I was younger, which leads naturally to ELO) and got me thinking more about picking up the guitar (after I bought the album myself in the mid 70's around 6th grade - I was soon to delve into YES a few months later which kicked it into higher gear), which has turned into an ongoing and permanent passion thankfully, as luck would have it.
The nice package on this 2001 remaster makes the time spent (about 48 min.) all the more worthwhile. The sound quality is beautiful to me and far better than my ancient record. You will be pleased I'm sure (Some good pictures, notes and two excellent extras to close the album with a welcome extra dose of swirling magic). Put aside all prejudices and go on a Laredo Tornado ride with Jeff Lynne & ELO (FEEL IT, DON'T ANALYZE IT) ... enjoy when the world closes in!

Loses a star for the price.......2005-12-17
I love Neil Young. He is my all-time rock hero. But even our heroes let us down sometimes - and Neil sort of screwed all his fans outside of Japan and Germany by not releasing this ep elsewhere. Three of these songs would be included on the album "Freedom" (and the other reviewer here is way off: "On Broadway" and "El Dorado" are the EXACT same version; the third song, "Don't Cry," was edited down slightly from this longer version, but is basically the same track) Thus, only a true Neil Young fanatic like myself would be insane enough to pay more than 30 bucks for the two rarities on this ep:
"Cocaine Eyes" is a top-notch rocker, a real potboiler of a song with some great anti-drug lyrics. It's definitely a highlight and should have been made more widely available.
"Heavy Love" is only so-so. It's a decent Neil rocker, but the lyrics aren't that good and the riff is sort of plain.
Overall, this is a solid ep. But, more than half of it is inlcuded on "Freedom" and for this price, it is for hard-core fans only.
Cranked.......2005-10-11
Perplexingly enough, this little e.p. was released only in Germany & Japan in 1989. But herein lies one of least known & best recordings of Neil Young's ongoing career. This thing sounds like it was recorded live. Maybe it was, I don't know. Despite a low key release, it signaled the start of a pissed off period where the amp level was cranked up to 11. Nirvana was soon to be the rage, & Young caught "grandfather of grunge" laurels as of result, but he was ahead of his time & seemingly oblivious of all that when he cut this furious slice of bile.
Clocking in at around 20 minutes , Eldorado outdoes likes of Freedom, Arc, Weld or Ragged Glory. The sense of isolation, fury & disgust here has no equal outside of Tonight's The Night & On The Beach. But neither reached the battle torn shores of this sonic Normandy. Cocaine Eyes blasts things off & is an absolute classic. The chorus of Don't Cry is a desperate plea warbled in the eye of Like A Hurricane thrashings. Heavy Love ends with Young screaming himself raw. On Broadway is a caterwauling dirge-like howl take on the old, classic standard & blows it's Freedom counterpart away. Things mellow a bit at the end with the haunting Eldorado, that is until Young starts weilding his guitar like a sawed off .30 ought six.
Another too well kept secret on what is popularly regarded as a forgotten classic. Short, but far from sweet, there is a sense of catharisis reached here that wouldn't work on a full length L.P. If you've found yourself to be a newfound fan, do not hesitate to seek this out. Shame about the price, but it's worth every rusty, bloodstained penny.

An Exploration into modern and ancient music.......2003-10-23
I only have this and 'Rivers Gonna Rise' from Patrick O'Hearn but I look forward to get some more 'cos they're awesome. 'Eldorado' is much more of an exotic, world music oriented one, and has a little bit more deepness into its tracks, and a certain mystique dark feeling as well.
'Amazon Waltz' is a great and moving start with a very fast percussion rythm, an Amazon screams and chants while a gorgeus acoustic guitar works along a very well studied melody.
'Nepalese Tango' is a short but great mixture of synths, percussion and ethnic sounds, with a nice and happy ending.
'Black Delilah' sounds very Eastern with the violin and is a strange and moody track.
'Chattahochee Field Day' is a wonderful theme with a very driving drum beat rythm and a melancholic feel. The middle part is a burst of synthed pizzicatos and other sounds. The two basses, rythm and lead one, are very good. The follower is a friendly and fast song called
'The Illusionist' full of nice synths and percussions. Sounds a little bit like a children's TV program but that is good!
The second side opens with a very, very weird song called 'One Eyed Jacks' (well, the title's not specially convencional thinking about it). It's a very funny song with a funny fretless bass answering some funny synth sounds.
'Hear Our Prayer' includes some Persian lyrics sung by a woman and there's a great bass work during the whole song. The next song,
'Delicate' is a little masterpiece. Starting with a gloomy and soft synthesiser arpeggio, the by chance delicate voice of a girl whispers an extremely beautiful melody and the voices multiply on the chorus creating a wonderful choir with a very spiritual feeling. This song is a very must hear, a gem in itself. I don't particularly like the title track,
'Eldorado', as I find it static and falsely grandious. It's for me the weakest part of the album. But the last song is probably the best one,
'There's Always Tomorrow'. Begins with a very sentimental acoustic guitar and has a terrific middle part where the synthesiser sounds unfold like a prayer, and the fretless bass plays a beautiful octaved bit... the end is magic 'cos an optimistic rythm breaks the sadness of the song, until it fades away leaving you with a sigh for the beautiful album you've heard...
Musical, magical mix that made me a Patrick O'hearn fan.......2003-08-23
First of many albums I have collected of Patrick O'hearn music.
Easy to listen to, and a pleasure to share with others. This is a masterpiece of modern compositions, original and deep. Music that has texture completly throughout the Frequency spectrum. Not just ambient noise but rhythm, harmony, and soothing melodic passages that seem worldly and un worldly. Love the deep bass lines and variety of different beats and rythms.
Excellent intro to his music as it is more upbeat and lighthearted than most of his later work. If you have a good sound system it will suprise you with wonderfull sonics and all around recording finesse.
El Dorado: In some ways it could be Patrick O' Hearn's best!.......2003-08-10
It has taken me a while to force myself to get a copy of this CD. The reason for this is because El Dorado features more daytime music. But, after hearing a few samples I decided to get the album. When I listened to the album I couldn't believe it! El Dorado is one of the best albums Patrick O' Hearn has done! It's much different than the dark, frightening sounds of Indigo where in this one he features more of music from the middle east. But in some songs he comes back with some of the same dark sounds from his previous work.
"Amazon Waltz" is great to start off the album. It gives you that feeling of being in the middle east with those different instruments. "Napalese Tango" is also one of my favorites with some of the same sounds. However, "Black Delilah" was a darker one. I would picture me walking around at night time. "Chattahoochee Field Day" gives me that daytime feeling with that nice soothing rythem. Some songs on the album feature voices like "Hear Our Prayer" and "Delicate". The songs with voices are okay but I kind of like the instrumental ones more. I loved every song on this album and I hope you do to.
Some people out there who liked albums like Indigo or Trust might find El Dorado a bit dissappointing because it's more of daylight music. But I think this album is as good as his others. But I liked the darker ones more.
I hope you all enjoy it!!!
Deep Thought Provoking Music.......2002-07-20
I am glad this album has been released in CD format. This album is definitely one of the best New Age CD's that I have heard. Music lovers who listen to artists like Enya and Loreena McKennitt will enjoy this album. Listening to this album is a pleasant experience because it soothing to the mind and soul. I like all of the songs on the album. However, my favorite
songs on the album are Delicate and One Eyed Jacks.
Subtitled "El Siesta".......2002-01-09
This CD is a re-issue. I have listened to the previous cassette release at least once a year since it came out over five years ago. Unfortunately, it has all been for naught because I cannot convince myself that any track in this album is worth cueing up - and believe me I have tried. O'Hearn is not effective at teleporting us to his exotic titles, entertaining us with the remarkable sounds of his equipment, nor impressing us with musical genius. What's left? Can I dance to it? Not if I am sober. The only positive thing I can say (which keeps the 2nd star in this review alive) is O'Hearn's background electronics can be somewhat intriguing at times. But the empty simplicity of the melodic line insults our intelligence. The mind drifts off the music quickly, as it does not earn our attention. If you are an O'Hearn fan, this is bottom-drawer O'Hearn. At best you can use El Dorado as party background music - as long as there are other CDs in the player in random track play mode.

What a surprise- I received my package only days after ordering my CD. First big problem: the jacket was correct but contained the wrong CD inside. Second big problem: my selection was no longer available. Silver lining: they promptly credited my account and didn't even request I send the wrong CD back.
An Electric Light Orchestra masterpiece.......2005-09-26
Eldorado (1974.) Electric Light Orchestra's fourth album.
INTRODUCTION:
In the mid-seventies, things were starting to come around for Electric Light Orchestra, whose humble beginnings gave a questionable outlook of what was to come for the band. While the group's self-titled debut album was good (it was called No Answer in America), it didn't do too well on the charts, and following its release co-frontman Roy Wood left the group. Electric Light Orchestra II was the first release to see Jeff Lynne as the group's lone frontman, and it showed that he still had a lot of work to do to find the band's sound. And with their third release, On The Third Day, the band came of age. Though not a massive success, it showed that Jeff Lynne had brought the band around. He planned to follow up the third album with something even more ambitious and intriguing - a concept album about fantasy and dreams. Electric Light Orchestra released the Eldorado album in 1974. Read on, and see how Lynne's fourth album with ELO measures up!
OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Eldorado is not one of Electric Light Orchestra's better-known albums, which is a damn shame, because this one is EXCELLENT. This is an extremely difficult album to review, so bear with me here. While the ELO albums that followed would have more emphasis on the tracks as separate entities (with the hit singles and all), Eldorado focuses more on the album itself as a whole. Of all of the albums ELO released, this is probably the one that has the most of a classical feel to it, since it's more about the album as a whole than separate tracks. The album is more heavy on orchestration and keyboards and synthesizers, and this really does make it feel somewhat like a symphony, as the front of the album implies it is. One major hit did emerge from this album, the classic Can't Get It Out Of My Head. Most of the other songs have a sound similar to one another, but are just different enough that they all blend together beautifully. My personal favorite song would have to be Boy Blue, which is definitely one of the group's most underrated tunes of all. Also excellent is Illusions In G Major, which seems more like rockabilly than classical/pop rock fusion. This song is similar to Rock And Roll Is King, the classic hit the group would score about a decade later. From its humble beginnings right down to the very end, Eldorado stands as one of ELO's finest efforts.
EDITION NOTES:
This album was reissued, and the reissued version features remastered sound quality, expanded liner notes, and bonus tracks! As far as bonus tracks go, you get an instrumental medley of various pieces of music from the album, and a short demo sequence called Dark City. These bonus tracks aren't essential by any means, but they do make a nice addition.
OVERALL:
Eldorado rules. With this album, Electric Light Orchestra's classical/pop-rock fusion dream is fully realized, perhaps better than on any other of their recordings. While this isn't really an album I'd recommend to new fans of the group (the next three albums make for better starting points than this one), it is certainly one of the group's finest efforts, and any true fan of the band will appreciate it greatly. Final verdict? I highly recommend this album. Five stars.
ELO at their peak.......2005-06-17
Electric Light Orchestra peaked with this album. This is the pre-sellout Electric Light Orchestra, before they started going by their initials, ELO. I love the songs and I love the lyrics, but most of all, I love the emotion and the feel of the whole album. Sit back in an easy chair with a glass of wine, or a doobie, and be transported to Eldorado by this timeless classic concept album.
Joe Davis
This album is like Eldorado.......2004-09-07
This album, ELO's second, is a concept album of the dream world, Eldorado. It's amazing. It contains two of the most amazing slower songs of all time, as well as great upbeat songs. It's well-rounded, and, on one's third or fourth listen, one will realize that there is more to the album than meets the eye.
1) Eldorado Overture: Great beginning to the album. The strings used are perfect, as well as the poem in the beginning. Marvelous song.
2) Can't Get it out of my Head: After three or four listens to this song, you will not be able to get it out of your head. One of the more remarkable songs ever.
3) Boy Blue: Classic song. Something new is discovered on every listen. Plucking on the violin is used perfectly.
4) Laredo Tornado: Another fantastic song. Somewhat slow, and just great guitar riffs.
5) Poor Boy (The Greenwood): Possibly the most overlooked song on the album. However, it's another great ELO song. Fits perfectly on the album.
6) Mister Kingdom: A most fantastic song. The first time I listened, I remember thinking, "Whoa, this song is pretty good!", as I had skipped over it for the longest time. Great ELO.
7) Nobody's Child: This song shows the diversity of ELO. They have such a wide range of songs that they are capable of performing.
8) Illusions in G Major: Another example of ELO's diversity. Such a different personality, but works perfectly. Fantastic.
9) Eldorado: My favorite song on the album. Possibly rhe most amazing song. Ever. On the fourth listen, this kicks in.
10) Eldorado Finale: Just like the Overture, but different in many ways. Great conclusion.
If you own later ELO albums, like A New World Record and Out of the Blue, it's worth going back and buying this. It shows part of ELO's evolution, but it's also a great collection of music.
Cool pop symphony.......2003-06-12
ELO was already a well-established group when this album came along. What set El Dorado apart from earlier works is that, rather than being a collection of singles, it devoloped and kept a central theme. Along the way there are some enormously popular songs (ie "Can't Get It Out of My Head"). But what makes this album fun is the constant return to the El Dorado Theme. It's a near perfect union of power band and strings. Speaking of power, the bass drum gets a bit overbearing on this CD version, but it's still a great romp.
Thrown in as a nice bonus at the end is an extended, instrumental piece in which the major musical themes, without vocals, are smurshed together into sort of a mini-suite. Since I was always frustrated with the shortness of the symphonic sections on the original album, this truly improves the album instead of simply filling up dead CD space, as is usually the case on re-releases.
ELO fans typically love or hate this album. For me, it's love.

Fast service but no cigar.......2005-09-27
