Passage of years has done nothing to dim this star...........2007-04-27
As time passed by, my sense that this and "Out of Our Heads" were their finest efforts never really left me. Not to say that enormous chunks of wonderful stuff didn't follow, of course, unlike many bands who peaked on their early releases and never challenged again. I just loved the raw passion in the way they covered material like "Not Fade Away" "Hitch Hike" and "Walking the Dog," and made it their own. To me, these well chosen covers were much more appealing than some of the later "middle of the LP" songs from their own writing. And, as for "Tell Me," it just doesn't get much better than that!
Good debut, but..........2007-03-15
...I agree with many of the critics who think the Rolling Stones 1963 singles would have made for some nice, but necessary bonus tracks. Otherwise a good debut from the boys. There are some great tracks here, like Not Fade Away, Route 66, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Honest I Do, Little by Little, I'm a King Bee, Carol and Tell Me. But, later in the album the boys start to run out of gas. Can I Get a Witness, You Can Make It If You Try and Walking the Dog are pretty weak. Also track 5, Now I've Got a Witness is filler.
Respectable but not brilliant.......2007-03-01
Ludicrous (but extremely prophetic) title aside, there are quite a few great songs found here: Carol's my favorite Chuck Berry tune, and I love the way the Boys play it; I never thought I'd be able to sit through another version of Route 66, but this one made me realize just how wrong I was in that respect; I Just Want to Make Love to You is a killer Muddy Waters tune made even killerer (yay for made-up words!) by Jagger & co., and Buddy Holly's Bo Diddley-esque Not Fade Away has a fun harmonica part, as does Little By Little. Oh, I almost forgot Tell Me (actually I didn't, I just did that to mess with your head), which is far and away my favorite of the bunch: soulful harmonies via Keith and Brian, and Charlie's drums nail the gospel feel, while Brian's twelve-string give it another interesting sound. Surprise, surprise, it's the one and only Jagger/Richards (as opposed to Nanker/Phledge) original on the album. And as the first album by the now justly-legendary Rolling Stones, it certainly has plenty of historical significance. My only problem with the disc is the fact that it's padded out with covers: Walkin' the Dog sucks, one of their worst covers (along with Under the Boardwalk, Pain in My Heart and You'd Better Move On, which are admittedly worse). Same goes for Can I Get a Witness, a disgraceful reworking of one of my favorite Marvin Gaye tunes. You Can Make it If You Try (not Sly Stone's song, mind you) further bogs things down, as do Honest I Do and the instrumental Now I've Got a Witness.
This isn't at all essential, but as far as the Stones do, you could do much worse. Shame the contemporary Come On/I Want to Be Loved and I Wanna Be Your Man/Stoned singles weren't included...
The polar opposite of Beatlemania.......2007-02-02
Not Fade Away, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Carol, Tell Me
are among their best already and they're just getting started.
Let Me Hear Ya!.......2006-07-19
This is The Rolling Stones' debut album and it's a good one at that. Consisting of mostly covers, this album takes you on a journey through blues and R&B that no other debut album ever could.
It all starts with the Buddy Holly cover, "Not Fade Away", a song that will get you snappin' your fingers until they're numb(well, maybe not since the song is pretty short.) Next comes Nat King Cole's "Route 66". This song kicks it to with Mick's soulful voice and some superior guitars by Keith and Brian. They do an especially good job with Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna Make Love To You". The song is very fast and is a good mixture of blues and rock 'n roll, a trademark the Stones would develop in the late 60's. "Honest I Do" is a good bluesy number but is easily forgotten. "Now I've Got A Witness" is a instrumental written by the Stones themselves, in tribute to asong later on the album. The song is okay but the organ is just silly. It makes me feel like I'm at a baseball game. "Little By Little" is a good catchy blues number co-written by the now infamous Phil Spector. "I'm A King Bee" sounds a lot like "Little Red Rooster" and the Stones do a outstanding job on Chuck Berry's "Carol". "Tell Me" is the only Jagger/Richards composition on here. This song is somewhat underrated; it is a warm and fragile ballad with some great vocals by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Next comes my personal favorite, Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get A Witness" This song is so happy and silly that you can help but smile when you listen to it. "You Can Make If You Try" is just average, the silly organ from "Now I've Got A Witness" is featured on this one too. Mick Jagger's voice is so goofy on this song that it's a bit surprising at first. Last but not least is "Walking The Dog", a funky R&B song.
This album is essential to any fan of The Rolling Stones.

Do You Think They Knew?.......2006-06-11
"Route 66," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Honest I Do," and the rest of the songs on this record show us the influence of the Blues on Rock and Roll. I have to admit that I came late to the Stones and haven't really paid much attention to the earlier stuff, till my friends and I decided to review their records. I spent a week with this record, "Out of Our Heads" and "Aftermath," playing them over and over again, so that I'd have a good understanding and appreciation of them when we got together to write our reviews. Wow, is all I can say. I appreciate them now, and I think I understand them, they are just plain down and out Rhythm and Blues records. Do you think they knew back then, when they heard this record for the first time that they were listening to what was going to become THE GREATEST GROUP ON EARTH, Really, do you think they knew?
Nineteen Sixty Four All Over Again.......2006-06-11
It's hard to believe that this record was recorded in only five days, but I guess back then they didn't spend months in the studio trying to polish an album. Andrew Oldham and Eric Easton produced a masterpiece with this one and that's saying something, because this is the band's debut album. This is R & B at it's best. R & B from a group of white guys. I'd give anything, just anything if I could go back in time and see these guys perform Bobby Troup's "Route 66" live or Willie Dixon's "I just Want to Make Love to You," which happens to be my favorite song on this record. Of course, Chuck Berry's "Carol" which the Stones will do so well six years later on the Bootleg "Liver Than You'll Ever Be" is also a dynamite piece of music. Oh gosh, listening to this record is like being back in Nineteen Sixty Four All Over Again, well that's what my dad says, I hadn't been born yet.
Never Fade Away.......2006-06-11
I've heard that back in the early Sixties the Rolling Stones were the bad boys of the English music scene while the Beatles were the good guys. Well, give me the bad boys any day of the week, month or year. This is the Stones debut album and you can tell from the very first chord, from the second Mick Jaggar opens his mouth that this is a band to be reckoned with. Nobody did it like the Stones back then and nobody does it like the Stones today. They've been around my whole life. I grew up with them and God willing, I'll grow old with them. I've seen them live more times than I can count, loved every second of every show. Let's all hope that the Rolling Stones Never Fade Away.
Very Bluesy, Very Good.......2006-06-10
This is the blues at it's very best. Mick's young voice is in fine form, Lord he sounds like a young black man singing his heart out, he could almost be Sam Cooke. "Little by Little," "Walking the Dog," and "Carol" are just plain blues to die for and I swear he does "Not Fade a Way," not a bit like Buddy Holly. I used to play this record a whole lot, but over the years it's sort of been at the back of my CD pile. I'm glad I gave it a listen this morning, it's like an old friend I haven't seen in a while, a friend I'll be listening to a lot more now.

The Stones got their groove on early, making one of the few originals here, the blues pastiche "Little by Little," a standout in terms of cool-eyed intensity. While taking on Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly and Marvin Gaye on a debut album would rightfully have daunted many a young band, this bunch just rocks it all. Outside the general toughness of sound and the front-cover glares, there's little of the badass 'tude-mongering that would begin to define them with the next album; here, Jagger, Richards, Jones, Wyman and Watts are mainly about the music, which they essay with a respectful insolence. --Rickey Wright

More for the early early Stones blues-cover-era fans.......2004-06-29
The Rolling Stones produced a heap of albums, and this is the first. Like most of their first few albums, it has mostly blues and rock'n'roll cover songs, such as Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and Chuck Berry's "Carol". These songs are done very well in early-stones style, but for those new to the stones and looking for another album packed with hits, I wouldn't look here. If you're looking for a more popular early-stones album, I suggest Out of our Heads, December's Children, and 12x5. If you decide you like those, then by all means buy this album. It's a solid blues/rock cover extravaganza...
