Solid, slick, professional.......2007-07-14
This album comes from a period in Santana's career where declining sales led him and the band to take their music in a more commercial, accessible direction. That's not to say that the band "sold out"; there are still long instrumental sections and flashy solos by Carlos and keyboardist Tom Coster. But the rawness of the early albums and the adventurousness of the early 70s period are gone, replaced by a more "professional" (for better or worse) approach.
About 40% of the album was actually recorded in the studio. In general this is above average for Santana of this period, and compares favorably to material on Amigos and Festival. "She's Not There", a cover of the classic Zombies tune, is nicely done. I also like the instrumentals, especially "Flor D'Luna".
The other 60% is live. It's not bad but not great. I'm not a big fan of Graham Lear's drumming on "Black Magic Woman" -- way too rockish and "square", unlike Michael Shrieve's slinky Latin groove on earlier versions. And this version of "Soul Sacrifice" is a pale shadow of either the studio version or the legendary Woodstock performance. The percussion section is definitely nowhere near what it was in the band's early days.
If you like Santana's mid-late 70s sound or live rock albums from that period, you will definitely want to pick Moonflower up (and will surely rate it higher than I did). If you prefer Santana's first three albums or the early 70s jazz-rock period, you may be disappointed. (Though I doubt you will feel you wasted your money.) If you're interested in picking up your first Santana live album, I would go for either the complete Woodstock performance (on the 2 cd reissue of the first Santana album), the 1971 Fillmore gig (on the 2 cd reissue of Santana III), or the 1973 live album Lotus. After you get those, check this one out.
String Cheese Theory.......2007-06-14
The music on this CD is superb. It's a great mix of studio and live recordings. This release marked a return from the fusion experiments back to playing music that is more "accessible" to the masses. Still, there is some great fusion on this release. Old favorites like Black Magic Woman and Toussaint L'Overture are far better than the originals, although one wonders just how much mileage Carlos can get out of these tunes, they appear all over the place on the Legacy remasters.
This release does suffer a little bit from out-dated electronic technology. Many bands, to their credit, avoided jumping on the synthesizer band wagon back in the 70's. King Crimson is one good example. This has proven to be a wise decision and here's why: updates in technology have rendered the electronics used in the 70's obsolete.
Traditional instruments such as drums, bass, sax, flute, trumpet, guitar are never going to sound "out of date" because there is no technological improvement to the instrument that will render them obsolete. Synthesizers on the other hand, are out of date within months of their first use and that's exactly why some of the music on this CD sounds a little dated - especially the cheesy ARP Strings used by Coster.
One other annoying little thing is Santana's repeated use of a chromatic walk up the guitar neck on a single string while striking the string at lightening speed with his pick (right hand) and running his guitar through an echo-plex. Don't get me wrong, to be sure, it's a very cool effect. But it is sooooo overused by Santana that it diminishes its effectiveness in the music and leaves me questioning his virtuosity (sorry Santana fans). He uses that lick all over the place on this release and also on Borboletta. Truly GREAT musicians just don't do that.
So, other than some of the instrumenation sounding a tad dated, this really is a fantastic release and worthy of your hard earned pennies. 4.5 stars. It's not quite a 5 in my book but it's close.
Essential Santana due to the definitive version of "Europa".......2007-03-03
This album is a nice mix between the more "pop" vocal leanings of the Santana band and the intense, explosive Miles / McLaughlin-inspired fusion work. The cover of The Zombies' "She's Not There" was a massive FM radio hit in its day (1977). Live tracks include the required "Black Magic Woman / Gypsy Queen, "Soul Sacrifice," and "Savor / Toussaint L'Overture," but the real gem of this collection is the career-best performance of "Europa." I've lost track of how many times this has appeared on Santana albums, both in studio and live formats, but this is the one. The next time you hear someone trashing Santana, put on "Europa" and watch them shut up...FAST. This album, "Lotus," and "Welcome" make up my "3 all-time greatest Santana albums" list.
Santana's Best Jams.......2006-09-26
If you're looking for the one Santana album that encompasses all of his talents, this is it. If you're not familiar with Santana, and are considering his music, this album is it. A collection of live cuts and studio tracks, this album was released right "Amigos". It was released during a period when Carlos Santana was pursuing some serious spiritual pathways, and the music is the better for it.
The band for the live cuts was one tight group, and, in my opinon, the best collection of musicians Carlos (or Devadip Carlos, as he called himself at the time)has ever assembled. I can not offhand think of another Santana album where the band is so astonishingly enegetic and incredibly tight. The jazz/fusion influence of Tom Coster's keyboard playing can be felt throughout.
For me, the tracks that particularly stand out are "Europa", "Transcendance", and "Soul Sacrifice". The live version of Europa, with its increaed tempo and careful use of feedback, and the extended jamming near the end, is worth the price of the album. "Transcendance" is a studio cut with an exteded guitar jam that's fast and tight..no sloppy notes here. The live "Soul Sacrifice" is the album's tour de force, where no ounce of energy is spared. The guitar work is beyond description. The closing power chords rank right up there with the most powerful rock chords ever recorded. As reviewer GLM accurately states, this track will "test your speakers" and "make your ear wax fall out". It's tough to listen to this one and not feel pumped afterward, wondering what hit you.
The one drawback to this CD, and it's a minor one, is that the tracks too frequently alternate between studio and stage. If played right through, the arrangement of the tracks can present too much of a mood change. You can easily overcome this by suitably programming your player. Also, the opening track, Dawn/Go Within, gets cut off way too early. Just as the groove is really picking up and Tom Coster is laying down some great piano chords, the song fades and segues into the live "Carnaval".
This album says it all for Santana.
Enjoy.
The best guitar solo.......2006-09-12
For true Santana fans, this is - in my opinion - the best Santana CD available. There is a mixture of popular songs along with some great guitar solos. "Transcendance" - to me - is probably the best guitar solo by Carlos Santana ever recorded.

Great Santana Live/Studio Album.......2005-02-07
MOONFLOWER is a great half-live/half-studio album by Santana. Sure, Gregg Rolie is gone, but Greg Walker is a perfect substitute, imbuing the earlier songs with a soulful edge rooted in Memphis-Chicago-Texas-St. Louis-New Orleans-Detroit-Philadelphia-Kansas City blues/rock/R&B traditions, and his rendition of the Zombies' "She's Not There" bests the outstanding original, turning what had been a wistful pop song into a thermonuclear blues-R&B-Latin-rock explosion. While you're getting the first three albums, THE ESSENTIAL SANTANA, the two BEST OFs, and GREATEST HITS, get this one.

Now He Sobs, Now He Sings.......2003-07-04
Hands down, this version of "Europa" is the most gut-wrenching, soulful instrumental song ever recorded - don't be surprised to find tears welling up in your eyes as it winds its way to its simultaneously mournful and hopeful conclusion. Carlos' crystalline guitar rings and roars throughout the album, but this piece alone is well worth the price.

Tobin Sprout. One peppy songster........2003-09-13
About as good as his first effort, "Carnival Boy", which is to say it is pretty darn good. It's more melodious than "Carnival Boy". I wish Tobin would sing about things that really mean something to him, rather than random things off the top of his head (the same complaint I have against GBV: stop trying to be the Picassos of music or something--it's lame), but the lyrics are quirky enough to be at least semi-cool, and music is lovely--Tobin is peppier than Goddard. Peppy, catchy, Tobin is always good to listen to, whatever he does.
aspiring music journalist.......2002-08-29
I am a student of music. I like to follow different styles and trends and write about them from an intellectual point of view, maybe shed some light in a way that few people have- offer a NEW perception, if you will.
I've been listening to GBV for about the last six months after a girlfriend left a tape in my car. Since then I have been collecting quite a few of their albums.
The music is rough and unpolished, like a jewel that's been buried in the desert for a few years. But once you pick it up and blow some of the dust off (hope I'm not getting TOO symbolic here) you'll find a shiny ruby!
A lot of people are labeling this music "home recording" or low fidelity music. It's not done in big studios with big budgets. I assume they got record deals for writing good songs, not for slick productions and glossy engineering.
So, where does that leave us?
Well, my grand impression or opinion is that you could actually compare Guided by Voices to the Beatles. (OK, stretch your imagination a little, I'm not saying they're as good). But what you get is a band like the Beatles. And if you use your imagination, well, wouldn't Robert Pollard be Paul McCartney and Tobin Sprout be John Lennon?
It's kind of neat, because they're making solo albums just like the Beatles did.
The nice part about this album, is it sounds like John Lennon in a way. Maybe not as perfect. But listen to John Lennon's Anthology CD's of his demos and rougher recordings. Then listen to this album. They're very similar.
Great pop hooks that are prettier than orange blossom trees and drinking a cool soda in the shade with the one you love.
I hope that someone will realize the talents of these songwriters and get them to a proper studio. Maybe we've yet to hear a Band on the Run or and Imagine from these potentially good singer/songwriters.
Hope to be reviewing some more Guided By Voices, so keep checking back! I hope I can steer everybody on to some great overlooked music in a time when music is not all that good anyways.
be warned..........2002-04-23
The first track on here "Get out of My Throat" is awesome...it's as good as the best GBV song you can think of... Everything else sounds like Paul McCartney. If you like Paul McCartney, you'll love this album.
good record.......2001-08-29
but to the guy below, all of the beatles stuff was done on 8 tracks or less, and rubber soul and revolver were done on four tracks.
Sprout smacked this one outta the park.......2000-03-24
The reviews for this album were good, but I still think it's an underrated pop masterpiece very nearly on a par with such classics as Nick Lowe's "Pure Pop For Now People" and Don Dixon's "Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Do." Though it lacks some of the charm and engagingly enigmatic atmosphere of "Carnival Boy," "Moonflower Plastic" more than makes up for it with a consistently excellent and varied set of songs. And dig the incredible production on "Angels Hang their Socks on the Moon"! You need to have this.

GENIUS...............2006-11-09
Great songs, irresistable hooks, superb guitar playing, whats not to like.
Every song gets into your head and will leave you singing along and getting out your air guitar. This is not metal, but some of the finest songs crafted by a very underrated musician. Many influences shine through, but they are always filtered through the musical genius that is TY TABOR. Whatever your musical preference, this cd should be in every CD collection.
the right ty........2005-10-27
excellant solo outing from kings x riff master, may take a few listens to really take a hold, and yes some tracks do sound like the mighty x but, hey thats what we like after all , cheers ty!
Ty Tabor - 'Moonflower Lane' (Metal Blade) 3 1/2 stars.......2005-03-25
'Moonflower Lane' is quite a treat for all King's X fans as we get a chance to check out guitarist Ty Tabor's solo work.I'm an average King's X fan as I found this CD to be a good piece of work.Ty had apparently spent some serious time and effort assembling this disc.Tunes I thought made an impression were "Island Sea","Without You","Another Day" and "Hollow Eyes".Good heavy rock release.Do check it out when you can.
Awesome.......2003-09-18
I really like this CD. "Her Palace" and "Hollow Eyes" are my favorites but all are good. This showcases TY's "Beatle-esque" sound and is well produced.
Only bummer is that several of the songs are on Ty's "Naomi's Solar Pumpkin" CD, which I already had.
Moonflower Lane Highlights the Genius Of Ty Tabor.......2003-03-07
When I first became a fan of King's X (way back in the Faith Hope Love days of 1991), I was immediately struck by the band's prog-rock influences (which I was a big fan of) and the vocals that sounded so Beatle-esque (who I love even more). Especially guitarist Ty Tabor, who hasn't the gruff classic rock soul of bassist Doug Pinnick, but whose style is warm and melodic in the classic sense; I love it. So it was no surprise that I fell totally in love with this band, and they, along with U2, became the only modern rock bands I cared for at all -- no one could match those two bands (and still don't).
Then I began to learn more about King's X, and found that almost all of my fave King's X songs were written by Tabor, if not sung by him. Slowly, I realized this guy was cool! Then I learned he was from the South (like me), and well, that did it. Ty was the guru.
But all kidding aside, when I found out that Ty was putting out a solo record, I was ecstatic. When I finally got my grubby hands on a copy of Moonflower Lane, I was enthralled to find that this was no mere vanity project for a guitarist itching to wank or waffle on endless solos. This was an album of actually good songs. And that is the thing that makes what Tabor does in King's X so good; he serves the song first and foremost, doing whatever it takes to make it work.
Not that this album doesnt have its share of great extended solos, but always within the context of the songs. Of course, the vocals are great, and the hooks are catchy. Most of these songs sound like refugees from King's X sessions, but don't think that means they are throwaways. They stand up well to most everything King's X has done. The high points of this disc are I Do, The Island Sea (the hit that should have been), The Truth, and Another Day. But if you are a fan of King's X, and especially Tabor, you will like everything here.
So all in all, its almost too much of a good thing. Melodic rock and roll. Great all around disc. It is still one of my faves. Buy this thing now.

The best Santana work.......2003-01-09
Maravilloso, explendido, excitante, alucinogeno, extasiante.....lo tiene TODO!!, el mejo disco de santana
