Neil Young

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Released in early 1969, Neil Young's first solo album is essentially an extension of "Broken Arrow" and "Expecting to Fly," his two most inventive contributions to Buffalo Springfield. Jack Nitzsche arranged and produced several of the tracks, fusing haunting strings and even funky female backing vocals to acoustic-oriented songs like "Here We Are in the Years" and "The Old Laughing Lady." "The Loner" is the one song from Neil Young to achieve classic-rock immortality, but "I've Been Waiting for You" is almost as good, and the rambling "Last Trip to Tulsa" presages the dark acoustic epics of On the Beach. Though it's not an essential album, Neil Young-like the man himself-is rarely less than interesting. --Dan Epstein

"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars simply put.......2007-07-17

One of the best live performance albums ever. Released today, it provides a rare crystallized insight into the explosive creativity of Neil Young in the early 1970s. This recording is as intimate as it gets -and as honest as true confession.

Brilliant, moving, passionate, real. Oh, how rare that is in 2007. How joyful when you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the #1 Neil Young Album.......2007-07-13

Because of this album, I have become a compulsive Neil Young freak. This is the CD that made me compulsive about the guy (and anyone he worked with). Buy it. NOW.

I have always liked Neil Young, but this album puts him in an entirely new light for me. I used to think of him as a subpar Dylan -- nice tunes, distinctive homey voice, not as prolific. All of that changed with Massey Hall's release. It is mesmerizing. The sound quality is truly audiophile -- how did they DO that? The album is so good it forced me to study Neil and his art in depth.

Having studied his work now, I'd now put Neil Young on par with Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan and George Harrison as a singer-songwriter. Most would disagree with me, but I would now put him even above Bob Dylan, for the simple reason that Neil Young has never lost a step in 40 years. Even the "dark years" produced wonderful albums. The songs here are simply stunning. They will literally bring tears to your eyes.

The DVD is worth having because it has a few interesting interviews -- especially the one with the "Old Man."

3 out of 5 stars Neil - what's the deal?.......2007-06-24

Here's the skinny on the DVD: The extra features, such as a clip from Neil performing 2 songs on "the Johnny Cash show" and the footage of Neil on his ranch with the hired hand that inspired the song "Old Man", are pretty cool. But I began to notice subtle differnces in the audio and the video (very subtle - but they're there). Then it hit me: The video is NOT the same performance as the audio track. That's why there is no video footage of the portions where Neil is speaking to the audience and on quite a few of the songs as well. The video of this Massey Hall show doesn't exist.
This is what I would expect from a bootleg. Why Neil Young feels the need to market a con such as these (see the reviews on the Filmore East show) is beyond me. But I still love him...

5 out of 5 stars CD GREAT-DVD, FORGET IT.......2007-06-18

Short, sweet and to the point. The concert at Massey Hall is a Neil Young acoustical classic. A lot of songs that were new at the time and have since become classics along with a few old favorites.

Unless you just have to have everything by Neil Young, just get the CD - you can live without the DVD. Out of 68 minutes, a repeat of the CD, you get - if you're lucky, maybe 20 minutes of poorly photographed concert footage. And what's the remainder? If you're stoned and really get your jollies in watching a film of tape recorder taping the concert, you'll truly enjoy the DVD. Yep, that's the bulk of the DVD - a tape recorder recording the concert with Neil singing in the background. And from the looks of the surroundings, the tape recorder isn't even at Massey Hall, but probably somewhere else.

A truly great CD which belongs in the collection of every Neil Young fan. You can live without the DVD and not miss a thing. Take the money you'll save by purchasing just the CD sans DVD and buy another Neil Young album.

4 out of 5 stars Poor quality video, excellent audio.......2007-06-15

I bought the CD/DVD combination, because I was interested in seeing the concert. Unfortunately, the video quality is spotty and for some of the songs there is no video at all, just a view of some instruments.

The audio quality is fine, and Neil sounds so young! It's a joy to listen to...Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Neil in his Prime!.......2007-06-03

Whether you are a Neil Young fan or not, this is a 'must hear' live recording for anyone who loves great folk music! The lyrics and melodies are both pensive and mirthful, taking you back to a simpler time when life and love was easier to contemplate. Neil's trademark stiletto-falsetto-like voice was beginning to peak, piercing your heart gently with melancholic honesty and sincerity. I have been a fan of his most of my life and, although I have enjoyed hearing Neil's later albums and how his talent has evolved through the years, (IMHO) nothing compares to his solo seventies creations! Thanks, Neil, for reminding us once again how music can touch our soul and be a soothing constant in this mad, erratic world.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Experience With Neil Young Live.......2007-05-27

The Cd opens to the sound of applause. The first song, "On The Way Home" sets the tone for the following 16 songs. Being a huge Neil Young fan, this is the CD you don't want to miss. When he introduces his "new" songs like "Old Man," I get chills. Amazing vocals combined with an adoring live audience, makes this an intimate listening experience that is beyond awesome. If I couldn't be there, this is the next best thing. He finishes the set with a humble rendition of, "I am a Child." His voice is sweet & sincere and takes me back to another time, the senenties. Also, having my own child now, I found the lyrics particularly profound. If you love Young, you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-27

Beautiful music by Neil Young. Simple and complex at the same time. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-05-14

This is probably one of the most honest and true live recordings in my collection; just Neil with guitar and piano. The performance is top notch, and the sound just soars; perfect blend! Some real highlights are the piano performance of "Heart of Gold", the soft and mysterious "Old Man" and of course, the first two tracks, which reach back to where Neil came from with Buffalo Springfield, and where he "currently" was during the After The Goldrush album. The album is a great bridge between the electric Neil and the Harvest sound he'd record later in the year.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-07

Excellent album; sound quality is great, musicianship is solid as always. Looking forward to hearing many more early Neil Young live albums as they are released from the vault.

One question would be: What took him so long? After all, a contemporary like Van Morrison has sold boatloads of his single-disc best-of set to buyers wary of diving into that deep catalog without a primer to get them started. So three and a half decades into his solo career, Neil Young finally delivers his version of that most modest of albums--the pre-holiday "hits" overview. What's surprising, coming from such a proud maverick, is its conventionality. Granted, the original master mixes are a boon for fans, but otherwise, there's not much here for loyalists who quite likely already possess the original "Like a Hurricane" on a couple of albums, as well as a handful of live interpretations scanning the years. Since Young cracked the Top 10 only once (1972's "Heart of Gold"), this set is built around concert staples as "Cinnamon Girl," "Rockin' in the Free World," and "Hey, Hey, My My" rather than chart favorites. Despite Young's honorable standing as a still-vital graybeard, the disc is skewed heavily toward his early work, shortchanging some mighty productive recent years. Peripheral fans may find this set of interest, but faithful followers are better advised to investigate the DVD version, which, at least, includes videos, photos, lyrics, and Web links. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

His first ever CD greatest-hits collection, Neil Young's Greatest Hits is a long-awaited retrospective from one of rock's most influential and enduring singer-songwriters. With 16 selections spanning his entire career since 1969, Greatest Hits features some of the greatest hits of rock'n'roll, period.

1 out of 5 stars Zib Zob and Janice S.G. Are Right.......2007-06-22

This recording is distorted and it sounds as if he is singing with helium. Even the newer tracks sound as if they were recorded analog with outdated equipment. Many people are not aware that Mr. Young recorded back in 1966 under the name Napoleon XIV. And yet not one those hits appear here!

1 out of 5 stars I agree with Janis, and also..........2007-06-09

it's too bad that "Diamond Girl" and "Alone Again, Naturally" did not make it onto this album. Then, I would give it a 4 star rating. Really.

1 out of 5 stars Inexplicably skips one of his biggest hits.......2007-05-15

Although this is a nice collection of songs by CSNY's whiny singer, it's obvious that Young has never been able to write new songs as good as he could from 1970-1972. It makes you think he should have retired after his first few albums, doesn't it?

A word to the wise, if you're looking for "Horse With No Name," keep on looking, because it's not included in this set.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Restrospective of a Great Career.......2007-04-24

Actually, I'd give this CD four and a half stars. The only thing that prevents a five-star review is that any greatest hits of someone as important as Neil Young needs to have 2 CDs to cover all the material the man has produced over the years. Sound quality excellent, and the versions are full-length, as much as ten minutes in the case of 'Cowgirl in the Sand'. Neil Young was one of the seminal singer/songwriters of the sixties and early seventies, and his works capture the era of protest and baby-boomers coming of age. The song selection is good for a single CD. As someone who has most of Young's work on vinyl, I realize that this retrospective is only about half what deserves to be included, but it is a good start, and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Some hits and some album cuts.......2007-04-10

While this is an excellent collection of some of Young's best work, it is not really a greatest hits collection. While it includes his biggest hits(Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart), it omits some of his other hits and includes songs that were never even released as singles. I am a bit surprised that they included both "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "Southern Man" on a single CD, since they are very similar musically. Of the two I always liked "Cowgirl" better, "Southern Man" is cliché ridden and perpetuates anti-southern stereotypes. All-in-all this is a solid collection for the casual Young fan.

Proclaiming his intentions with "Are You Ready for the Country?" Young detoured briefly to the Nashville mainstream. On this No. 1 1972 album, even the singer's acquired-taste voice comes across smooth and beautiful--the smash "Heart of Gold," with steel guitars and Linda Ronstadt's backup vocals, is by far Young's most commercial-sounding song. His usual dissonant touches, like the otherworldly guitar in "Out on the Weekend," are less spooky in this new context. The last two tracks, the deceptively gentle "The Needle and the Damage Done" and the hypnotic rocker "Words (Between the Lines of Age)," predict "Tonight's the Night," Young's haunted 1975 classic. --Steve Knopper

5 out of 5 stars Folk-esque classic.......2007-07-15

Neil Young's unique folk-esque music with his own distinct voice, has been enjoyed by many.
This 1972 album is probabely his best.
Starting with the laidback Out On The Weekend and going on to the title track labum, and the melancholy wailing of A Man Needs A Maid.
Then possibly his best known song of loneliness and heartache- Heart of Gold.
Then there is the contemplative song of youth and age - Old Man.
Neil Diamond was another classic of the forever memorable 70's and anybody who loves folk will want this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any respectable collection.......2007-04-12

This album was released when I was 10 years old. I remember listening to it when my older brother first purchased it. I almost forgot it even existed until I recalled it after listening to CSN&Y Deja VU. All 10 tracks are incredible. It's truly a great recording. My 14 year old daughter even recognized some of the tracks on this album which was released 35 years ago. It's nice to jam to music that has words you can understand and have meaning. When my brother learned that I had purchased the CD he imediately took credit for "teaching me well" on quality classic music.

5 out of 5 stars NEIL YOUNG'S TIMELESS AUTUMN CLASSIC !.......2007-04-11

Originally released in 1972, Neil Young's Harvest includes his only number one hit single, Heart of Gold, together with nine other songs, including some that are the best of his forty year career. This is the album that Neil himself said was his best. It is a varied album, that explores many levels of the human experience, including loneliness, isolation, grief, madness, love, and acceptance. Contradictions are everywhere in these songs, including the first, Out on the Weekend. Young sings of the lonely boy who can't relate to joy, but also about the "woman so fine" who loves him. This song, like most on this album, includes acoustic guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel guitar. In the next song, Harvest, Young sings, "Will I see you give more than I can take?, Will I only harvest some?", as if he will not allow himself to completely let go and fall in love. Continuing this theme of isolation, A Man Needs A Maid starts with "My life is changing in so many ways, I don't know who to trust anymore". With it's haunting melody, the London Symphony Orchestra accompaniment, and Young's fragile voice, the song allows you to empathize with it's character's uncertainty. Next is Heart of Gold, where the loner sings of looking for true love, but feels he is running out of time. With James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt providing the backing vocals, Ben Keith playing beautiful pedal steel guitar phrases, and Young on acoustic guitar and harmonica, singing of traveling and being a miner for a heart of gold, the song works perfectly to conjure up the image of a decent man searching the world over for a decent woman to love. Old Man is a song Neil wrote about the 70-year-old cattleman ranch hand who lived at his ranch. It is another song in which Young portrays a loner, and is probably Neil's most popular song ever. There's A World is a symphony (with the LSO) where hope and acceptance are the prevalent themes. With lyrics like "All God's children", "Never worry", and "Could be good things in the air for you", it's an uplifting song. In Alabama, Young calls the state out on Jim Crow laws and racist attitudes. Recorded in a barn at his ranch with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums, Young brought in Stephen Stills and David Crosby to sing the backing vocals. The rock song sounds great and also makes it's point clear. Needle and the Damage Done was recorded live at a California University with just Neil and an acoustic guitar. Written about band member Danny Whitten (who later died from a drug overdose), the song is both poignant and haunting. Words (Between the Lines of Age) closes the album (and also gets points for the great title). This was also recorded in Young's barn with electric guitars, a pedal steel guitar, piano, and drums. It features Dylan influenced lyrics, and a long guitar solo (Neil plays great guitar solos). Harvest is an album that's best listened to in the Fall of the year. With it's folk-country sounds, reflective themes, and even it's autumnal album cover and title, it blends well with the mood of the season. Harvest is a timeless autumn classic that you will enjoy year after year.

For years, fans of Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been waiting for an official chance to hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiring Tonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan's Bootleg series. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

The first release of Neil Young's archive performance series.

2 out of 5 stars Lower the price or finish the show!.......2007-06-09

I don't care how many times I've blasted "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" and "Down By The River" from this CD and thoroughly enjoyed them or how it's such a great look into a critical period of so many critical periods of such an amazing aritist...it's either over priced or more profoundly too lacking in sheer length. As a Neil fan I had to get it but it's hard not to feel slightly ripped off. Makes me skeptical about buying further such releases.

5 out of 5 stars Don't question the Master and buy it!.......2007-05-30

I also have the 2-10-70 bootleg and feel that a comparison is in order to appreciate this Fillmore show. Neil's very intimate with the crowd at the Cincinatti show, but frustrated at times, even asking two people to be quiet so he can "get into it" for the rest of the audience. Then, at the beginning of the electric set Neil complains about a shock that he's getting from the equipment, and in the middle of "Down by the River" (18 minutes long!) he clearly says "I quit" during the chorus. So, that show is not going to be one of his favorites even if the music is amazing. It is a shame that this Fillmore release is missing the acoustic set and the ubiquitous "Cinnamon Girl" closer, which I heard was not as well preserved. However, what is here is the best sounding live Neil you have ever heard! It's not just the quality of the recording, either, which is rich, but the band itself. Let's take the "River" as our vehicle of comparison. Neil's voice has more inflection, his solos are more varied and aggressive, and despite being 12 minutes long it is a superior version. Also, instead of "It Might Have Been" from Cincinatti we get "Cowgirl" which blows the studio version away. Obviously, Neil felt better at the Fillmore show, so don't question the Master and treat yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Live at the Fillmore East - Classic Crazy Horse.......2007-05-13

If you want a piece of Neil Young and Crazy Horse History, this is the ticket. Sure it might not be the whole concert and it is short compared to most CDs today, but I'll take quality over quanity anyday! The sound quality is fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Neil Young and Crazy Horse Live at Fillmore East .......2007-05-06

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are brilliant. It is a live version of " Everybody Knows this is Knowhere" The version of "Winterlong" is superb" There is little crowd noise. I would have enjoyed more tracks on the CD. All in all well worth the purchase price

5 out of 5 stars Long Lost Neil Young Live Returns and SHINES!.......2007-04-12

Amzing this collection is. A must have along with Live at Massey Hall. Neil sounds like you remember especially if you saw him with Crazy Horse at the late Bill Graham's Fillmore East a favorite with the hippies in New Yorks Greenwich Village in the late sixties time of flower and beads! . A young Neil Young voice, rather than the mature version that comes with age and mileage. An incredible collection of well produced and well performed live tracks that can only bring you back to thw Woodstock era. Well worth the listen!

After laboring in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young finally hit perfect pitch--if his endearing off-center whine can be called "perfect"--with his third album. He's equally passionate with trippy riddles (has anybody figured out what "We've got mother nature on the run" means in the title track?) and pointed protest (after 30 years of rock-radio overplay, "Southern Man" still rings with truth about redneck racism). His creaky ensemble, including pianist Jack Nitzsche and rotating members of Crazy Horse, transforms ramshackle country and folk songs into soulful hippie hymns. --Steve Knopper

This has remained my favorite Neil Young Album as well as one of my all time favorite rock albums.

5 out of 5 stars After The Goldrush.......2007-04-12

Neil Young-After The Gold Rush *****

Neil Young released his seceond classic solo album in 1970. This time he elected to go it without the help of the grea Crazy Horse. Though he did use every member of the band at one point or another during the recording of After The Goldrush this was largley a solo album. A much softer and lighter album then it's predicesor Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and actually accesable compared to the debut selftitled album. After The Goldrush is a much more personal album with more hearfelt lyrics and a far less dry recording then that of his previous albums.

By this time Neil Young had already made a large name for himself working with the legendary Buffalow Springfield, the success of Everbody Knows This Is Nowhere, and he was beginning to work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, so it was only logical that this album be a massive success.

Songs like 'Tell Me Why' and the hit 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and 'I Believe In You' are very personal songs that have to be heard to appreciate and when heard one can since and feel the longing in Youngs voice for love. The cover of the country classic 'Oh, Lonesome Me' really sums up the entire feel of this album and Neil mood at the time, he was in a very low place and was longing for companionship of some kind. While tracks like the short 'Till The Morning Comes' and the equally as short 'Cripple Creek Ferry' seem up beat and peppy they are the shortest moments on the album and by the far the only half way forgetable ones on this classic. 'Southern Man' is a classic and it was destend to become so the moment it was recorded. Establishing Neil Young as a certified first rate guitar slinger, and the Godfather of grunge all at the same time. 'Southern Man' is one of if not the single most contraversial songs Young ever recorded causing a rivalry between him and the southern rock band from Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The title track on the album 'After The Gold Rush' is another Young classic and one of his all time best songs. It is a song about the renissance, the 1970's, and the future and how the world is changing and not changing and what we could be doing to fix things but are not doing. It is a calssic song that is for sure. 'When You Dance You Can Really Love' is one song that has always be given a bad rap and for what I do not understand the song is wonderful and one that I personally get lost in everytime I hear it. 'Birds' is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs Neil Young or anyone has ever written and it is heart wrenching to listen to. You relaly must hear to understand what I mean. 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is possibly the best song Young ever recorded. The melody line and the vocal layering is wonderful. The lyrics are spectacular, quite simply amazing. Do sit and write in a little review how amazing 'Dont Let It Bring You Down' is, is just frankly impossible. Just listen is all that can be said.

After The Gold Rush has gone down in history and one of the all time greatest rock n' roll albums ever. Many best of, critics, and music fans alike. After The Gold Rush is an album all Neil Young fans and all rock n' roll fans around the world should own. It's an album of songwriting, and much more tendor then most of the other albums in Youngs cannon, Highly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars A solid effort.......2007-04-10

While this is not one of my favorite Neil Young albums, it is a solid effort. It was a top ten hit on the US album charts and produced his first solo top 40 hit "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the minor follow-up hit "When You Dance You Can Really Love". It includes probably his most overrated song, the cliché ridden "Southern Man", which is really just a remake of his excellent "Cowgirl in the Sand". It was popular primarily because it helped perpetuate anti-southern and anti-Christian stereotypes (the only two groups that it is still politically correct to stereotype). "Tell Me Why" is a very good song as is "After The Gold Rush", though Young's vocal limitations are very apparent on this song as he struggles to hit the notes. "Till The Morning Comes" is good but sounds like a song that he started but could never finish. All-in-all, a good album but not a great one.

5 out of 5 stars If You Could Forget The Politics And Relax For Awhile Listen Up............2007-03-13

The icon Neil Young solidified himself in the early to mid 70's and the funny thing is that he remains true to this album to this day despite all the semi forays into synthesized madness, noise, albums cut with Pearl Jam, and the styles of the day.
The simplicity of this album as well as his prior 2, the few that followed are all 5 stars,it's laid back intimate sparse texture that fuses bittersweet tinged country ruminations with the great garage rock of Crazy horse was his formula and Neil's ongoing trademark of endurance.
Nobody does it better, none of his musical children.
I happily was front row in New York on his "Greendale" tour, saw that great"Rust Never Sleeps" tour, and followed and listen to him from the "Deja Vu" days onward and all you youngsters are best to start with these and should listen to Buffalo Springfield with his old buddy Steve Stills to see the development of this musician and the status he achieved with CSN&Y and beyond.

This is a good transitional album by Neil. He smartly used some of Crazy Horse and CSN to complete it before going on tour with CSNY.

Opening with the methodical, hard-rocking "Cinnamon Girl"--still one of the singer-songwriter's most-hollered requests in concert--Young's second solo album introduces the cockeyed harmonies and sloppy, chiming guitars of Crazy Horse. His wide swings from soft-spoken country-folk ("Round & Round [It Won't Be Long]") to menacing metal (the punch line to "Down by the River" is "I shot my baby") indicate the multiple personalities in Young's future. His second album of 1969 broadcasts a sincere passion for the peace-and-love '60s (dig the long guitar solos) but also predicts the dark introspection of "Tonight's the Night." --Steve Knopper

The sound quality did not sound as good as my old album.

5 out of 5 stars a suggestion.......2007-05-30

You know what i think would be great?
If they gave this album one of those "Deluxe Edition" jobs like they've
done with so many others such as the first Weezer album and Blind Faith and on and on. Out-takes,demo's,alternate takes/mix's....it would all be catnip to the millions who love this album.
Actually, now that i think of it....if a "Deluxe Edition" job isn't possible, they could make a nice pairing of this along with the Neil and Crazy Horse at The Fillmore 1970 CD. That would be pretty deluxe!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic----Everybody Knows.......2007-05-14

While sniffing around in the wine cellar, I looked into my considerable archive of music and this one, inexplicably, shuffled it's way off the shelf into my bony hands. Some people say that it's Universal Force and Enlightenment that did it. I suspect Guido from the empty bottles. In any event- it is an excellent choice.
What can one say about this album? Neil Young expanded beyond Buffalo Springfield with this one and, I think, came into his own as a considerable artist in his own right. With Crazy Horse, he examined and extended his creativity with pastoral landscapes, jagged-edged cliffs, outerworldly musings, and just plain country meets city sensibility. Not that it always makes sense, but that people is the magic of music. Interpretation is up to you, not the artist.
Even now, I am awed by the consistency Neil displays so early in his solo career. We are never relaxed, for one moment, that the sequence of songs will resemble sameness in any shape or form. It begins with "Cinnamon Girl" which, in some way, reveals the dilemma that many young people have a problem with. That is the in-between phase of being a child and adult. He wants to spend his life with her, but then again, "Ma, send me money". The need to be free but not quite there yet. This theme reveals itself in many of his tunes. It is a slow rocker but with such a memorable riff. Next up "Everybody Knows", a jumpy, sprightly groove that, again, reveals where he's at - between a dream and reality- essentially nowhere.
"Round and Round" is a slow acoustic sadness that, I feel at least, is about loss. A loss of yourself? Or perhaps someone close. "Down By the River", aside from allowing Neil to stretch his jagged lead guitar, proposes another dilemma for the astute listener. The protagonist is lead to possibilities with this woman - but is her non-compliance a reason to shoot her? Down by the River? An enigmatic song at best and I dare not ask Neil the meaning.
We then get to "The Losing End" which reveals an easy-going country groove with some electric guitars helping it along. The theme? Good ol' country heartache. A mainstay in that genre - now and always. The mood then changes, into some outerworldly, ethereal regret and deception. This song reveals a darkness of the mind, and this is brought forth so effectively with the inclusion of violins. An eerie offering, but so very different.
"Cowgirl in the Sand", I think, is one of Neil's most potent songs. It can be taken on many levels. It is hard drivin' (but, it takes on a whole new perspective if you heard him do the acoustic version). Neil pleads with her to stay in her company. But, her place of command is the desert. Desolation. And, this song tries, desperately, to make her see her worth. Neil knows she is a beauty. She feels she is "purple words on a gray background". I feel that this song is an aching plea. It also allows Neil to experiment with lead guitar breaks, gritty and rough and insistent on it's purpose. In all, a brilliant conclusion to a brilliant album.
This album (plus the next two- After the Gold Rush and Harvest) complete the superb triumvirate of Neil's early career. As we know now, he was to go on to more creative terrain. Some of it successful, some of it not so. In any event, plain and simple, he is an amazing artist and, I think, one of the greats in popular music.
This one is definitely a classic and well worth the investment.
Now - if only Guido would replenish my bottles!

5 out of 5 stars an absolute rock and roll classic........2007-03-30

"tonight's the night" is my favorite neil young album. what's number two, though? "on the beach," "after the gold rush," or "everybody knows this is nowhere." hard to choose from those three great albums. might be "everybody knows..." though. such great songs. such stunning performances. "down by the river" and "cowgirl in the sand" have some of the most originally stunning guitar jams in the history of rock and roll. and the first of those two songs is simply about as haunting a piece of work as you will find in all of the rock and roll canon. "cinnamon girl," with its power chords and great melody is another classic. the whole album is just outrageously fantastic. don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent early record.......2007-03-18

This is really one of Neil Young's most interesting albums. I love the two lengthy jams the most- lots of emotion in the guitar playing and the mood. "cinnamon girl" is probably overplayed, and the crunchy guitar riff never did a whole lot for me, but the title song and the rest of the album stand mighty proud as distinct tunes that will immediately take you back to the late 60's. Enjoy it. I wonder if Neil Young knew at the time that this album would still be remembered and praised nearly 40, yes that's right *40* years later.

An artist for all musical seasons, Neil Young returns to autumnal harvest mode on Prairie Wind, with homespun material and sing-song melodies that renew the spirit of some of his most popular releases. Yet the mood here is darker in its maturity than on Harvest and Harvest Moon--the previous releases in what now sounds like a trilogy--and the arrangements have greater range and aural depth, with Wayne Jackson of the soulful Memphis Horns, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers gospel choir, and a string section employed to striking effect. This is a song cycle of dreams, memories, family ties, and the passage of time--what is lost and what endures. The elliptical, epic "No Wonder," with its evocation of 9/11, ranks with the most ambitious songs of Young's career, while "Falling Off the Face of the Earth," "It's a Dream," and the bluesy title cut combine childlike innocence with unsettling experience. Spooner Oldham's church keyboards and coproducer Ben Keith's steel guitar reinforce the sound's sturdy simplicity. Young has released a lot of albums in different musical styles, but Prairie Wind feels like a homecoming, and ranks with his very best. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Prairie Wind is quintessential Neil Young, a masterpiece that completes the trilogy of his best-selling albums Harvest and Harvest Moon-direct yet poetic, country and folk yet rock. Recorded in Nashville, and with longtime collaborators, Prairie Wind is a moving series of songs reflecting Young's journey through life.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Prairie Wind.......2007-06-19

Like Johnny Cash, Neil's been everywhere, man. Which means that the occasional quiet, unassuming, unpretentious country-folk record is perfectly welcome. This happens to be a quiet, unassuming, unpretentious country-folk record. Draw your own conclusions. This is a good record for sure, but it's a couple songs short of being a crowning achievement like, say, After the Gold Rush. It's not overproduced, it's melodic, it's relaxing, there's a horn section that sounds good but slightly out-of-place. Really, what else do you need to know? Oh yeah, what songs are good and what songs aren't. My favorite is the intense "No Wonder", followed by the longish, reflective title track and the depressed "Painter" - I also enjoy the quiet, brief "Fallin' off the Face of the Earth" and the hymnal "When God Made Me" (though the choir is a bit much). I suppose that, if I was a jerk, I could slag "Far from Home" for being exaggerated and syrupy, but the truth is I like that one too. It's just exaggerated and syrupy, that's all. Now when Neil opens up a bottle of Aunt Jemima and pours it everywhere, like he does on the Elvis tribute "He Was the King", "It's a Dream" and "Here for You", that's where the problems start to set in. I hope you like cheese, because between those three songs there's a lot of gorgonzola. Good thing that he mostly forgets about the aforementioned metaphorical dairy products and pancake toppings, and chooses instead to go for a quiet, subdued, genuinely heartfelt album in a day and age where self-centered angst means money in the bank.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-05-31

This is a great CD to add to your Neil Young collection. His songs are very well written and preformed.

5 out of 5 stars PRAIRIE WIND IS THE ONE WE HAVE WAITED FOR !.......2007-05-01

He finally did it! Neil Young has recorded another masterpiece to stand alongside his 1972 album, Harvest. Full of honest emotion, beauty, and variety, the colorful Prairie Wind (2005) is an ambitious work of art that reflects the life of Neil Young at 60. During the recording of Prairie Wind, Young's famous Canadian sportswriter dad passed away, and Neil himself had brain surgery to repair a life threatening aneurysm. Thoughts of his own mortality show up in various songs on the album, such as This Old Guitar, an acoustic guitar duet with Emmylou Harris.

This old guitar ain't mine to keep,
It's mine to play for a while,
This old guitar ain't mine to keep,
It's only mine for a while.

The song is performed on Hank Williams' old Martin guitar, and the singer realizes his guitar will outlive him, just as it has outlived it's other famous owner. Here For You is a father's touching letter to a daughter who has just left the nest, and like myself, many fathers of daughters will recognize themselves in this song, even if their daughters are still at home. The Painter is a song that would have fit well on Harvest or Harvest Moon, and offers the advice, "If you follow every dream, you might get lost". No Wonder includes some solid acoustic guitar work from Young, while an electric slide guitar wails, and Neil sings of an "old church on the hill", a "fallen soldier bell", and a senator that "took his money just like all the rest". Musically, the album features acoustic guitars, harmonica, pedal steel guitar, fiddle, electric guitars, a horn section, a church choir, piano, dobro, and an orchestra. He Was The King is a fun, rollicking, half satire, half tribute to Elvis, and the last song adresses a subject Young has been reticent about most of his career, his faith. In the hymn When God Made Me, Young sings about the world's and his own relationship with God.

Did He give us the gift of love,
To say who we could choose,
When God made me
When God made me.

Prairie Wind satisfies at every level. Musically, lyrically, emotionally. The prevailing theme is what Neil Young has on his mind at 60 years old, and as it turns out, these are the same things that most of of us have on our minds, too, whether we're 60 or not. Come to think of it, quite a few of Neil Young's albums are like that, but Prairie Wind also has images of Canadian geese, buffalo, Indian spirits, a weathered train station, old guitars, dreams, and a girl cousin that sings harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Typical Neil.......2007-04-29

I've spent my whole life listening to this guy, and he never dissapoints.
Friends, times and places come and go, Neil never fails to deliver. God bless
Canada for sharing Neil with us all these years. I first was made aware of Prarie Wind by watching the DVD of the Nashville concert with Emmylou. It
was spectacular by the way and I had to have the CD. It's the easiest five stars I've ever given out. The songs rattle around in my brain along with Neil's signature hardscrabble guitar riffs. There's not a bad song to be found on here. Prarie Wind (Blowing Through My Head) just makes me shake my head and wonder how Neil does it. No Wonder and Falling Off The Face Of
the Earth are outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Prairie wind blowing through the harvest.......2007-04-19

People rave about this being a latter-day masterpiece for Neil; sadly, while it's a good album, it falls far short of his true masterpieces, and it doesn't quite reach the level of Harvest Moon. The words no longer seem to flow from the heart, but from the mind, and there's a certain sameness to the sound that belies an awkward self-awareness. Still, Neil the chameleon deserves a lot of credit, even if he's not reinventing but revisiting.

Sparse, underproduced, and at times downright dour, On the Beach was Neil Young's first studio album after Harvest had transformed him into a mainstream superstar two years before. It was a career move akin to "pissin' in the wind," as the artist himself describes life on one of the album's most famous lines. Young had already recorded the harrowing Tonight's the Night, his indictment of '60s drug culture and the damage done, but his label rejected it as too abrasive. So the artist gave them this instead. Less mournful but still haunting, the album is basically Young's rejection of rock stardom and what had become of the counterculture, covering a range of subjects, including Richard Nixon and Patty Hearst (the epic "Ambulance Blues"), his affair with actress Carrie Snodgrass ("Motion Pictures"), and, most famously, years before it became "chic" to do so, Charles Manson (the rocking "Revolution Blues"). "Vampire Blues," meanwhile, seemed to be about all those topics, as well as Young himself. Full of despair and little hope, On the Beach would nevertheless eventually come to be reappraised as a rock culture masterpiece. --Bill Holdship

I have always thought that this was one of his strongest albums. The songwriting is thoughtful, interesting, and clever. The music is equally solid. Even his take on familiar genres--blues, ballads--are fresh and strong. His singing is as good as it ever gets, which may be an acquired taste for some, but he is at his peak here. Along with "After the Gold Rush", "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere", and "Harvest", I think this work completes the Holy Quadrangle of early Neil Young.

5 out of 5 stars Never Looses its Unique and Darkly Profound Feel.......2007-03-05

The last album in Neil's "ditch trilogy" provides a remarkable insight into Neil's music and his personal life and it is one of Neil's best albums.

"Walk On" is that real catchy country/rock pop tune with riffs and hooks, a style Young seldom showcased. "See The Sky About to Rain" had been around for a number of years and is a tender ballad with some nice steel pedal guitar and organ work. "Revolution Blues" is Neil at the top of his game. The banjo comes out on "For the Turnstiles" along with Neil singing in a real high pitched voice, it has a real rough charm to it, as does most of Neil's stuff. "Vampire Blues" is a little bluesy rock number. The title track is a moving and atmospheric delight, close your eyes and immerse yourself for 7 minutes. Some great lines in that song. "Motion Pictures" is a raw acoustic ballad with some nice guitar fills, some honest lyrics and a nice melody. The closing track would be one of his finest compositions, a near 9 minute acoustic narrative song, more organic, earthy and moving than any of Bob Dylan's tunes of similar length.

This album is best listened to at night.

5 out of 5 stars Here's everything you need to know about Neil Young..........2007-02-03

First, while there are Neil Young "fans" who think "Harvest" is his "best" album, they aren't the real fans, and they're not the ones who paid the mortgage on the Redwood City ranch. They're Top 40 people, and "Harvest" was a Top 40 album. On the liner notes to "Decade," Young acknowledged that album as the "middle of the road" and welcomed his return to "the ditch." Second, while it's highly inaccurate to say that Neil "loves" his fans, the truth is that "holds them in contempt" is a better description (read the book "Shakey" for starters, specifically the reminiscences of the "Tonight's The Night" tour. He laughed at the fact that he showed up for these shows drunk and stoned and by doing so ripped off his audience. Whatta guy. Neil cares about Neil...and his family...and anyone else is simply a "consumer). Third, while Neil had a big laugh over his "lost decade" at Geffen and the lawsuit that followed, David Geffen was probably justified in sending a lawsuit his way, because Young ripped off Geffen and everyone who bought a copy of "Kinda Fonda Wanda" (from the album "Neil & The Shocking Pinks.") But the Reprise years...especially this album, an overlooked classic...that's why the faithful hang in there. From the feel-good Charles Manson ditty "Revolution Blues" ("Well I hear that Laurel Canyon is full of famous stars, but I hate them worse than lepers, and I'll kill them in their cars") to concert stand-bys ("See The Sky About To Rain"), this is Weird and Moody Neil at 11 on a 10 scale...in short, pure freakin' art without a single nod toward "commercialism." Any Neil Young album is a roll of the dice, but this one comes up a winner on all counts.

5 out of 5 stars Neil Young's Finest Accomplishment.......2007-01-30

I would give this album 6 stars. Harvest is great, yes. After the Gold Rush, Tonights the Night, the list of epic Neil Young albums could go on for days, but nothing is as complete as On the Beach. I can't say enough about this album. If I ever have children, this will be the first thing they hear. And maybe the only thing. There is no better album. If you fancy yourself a Neil Young fan, you don't need to think twice about purchasing this album. It will make your day again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Great.......2006-12-27

I never even knew 'On The Beach' existed until I saw the re-issued cd on the shelves about a year ago. What a surprise. This is Neil at his best. He hits on some of his greatest lyrics and music over the course of this album.

Other reviews have done a great song by song run down so there's no reason for me to take up your time covering the same ground.

If you like Neil at all then this should be in your collection. I'd even recommend this one to a non-Neil fan!

Even if you don't agree with Neil Young's politics, you can't help but be daunted by the intersection of his genius and ire on his second album in less than seven months. It is the very rare artist who is able to channel indignation and moral disgust in such a coherent and forceful way--without sacrificing any of the vivid imagery, passion, or the high level of musicality that we have come to expect from him over the past four decades. But that's not what elevates this album: it's his pure, naked, visceral reaction to the Bush administration's foreign policy, building on a canon of outrage that he began with 1970's "Ohio," penned in the wake of the Kent State student deaths. But here he goes one better, filling in the lines that he began to draw on 2003's Greendale about a family caught in changing times. But Young's done with musing about lost ideals. On Living with War, he demands much more from his audience, and himself. This is nothing less than a call for fearless action in extraordinarily fearful times. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

The Canadian music hall of famer and former member of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is responsible for hits like Southern Man, Heart of Gold and Harvest Moon. But on his newest record, to be titled Living with the War, Young is taking a page from Bob Dylan and putting together an album of protest songs against the actions of American President George W. Bush. One of the tracks on the upcoming release, which as of yet has no release date, is said to feature the single Let's Impeach the President whose subject is fairly obvious. Not a stranger to protest music the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tune Ohio was written in reaction to a protest against the Vietnam War.

Well well well. Seems Neil Young is reaping, then repenting, some of his pro-Reagan harvest. Cool by me, it's never too late to start loving instead of killing - and nice to see Phil Ochs get top billing over Dylan in the liner notes, too.

Now, the music. Two songs, "After The Garden" and "Families" have the classic Young magic - tuneful, beautiful sorrowful grunge. With their anthemic choruses, the folkpop master peers from behind his overheated amps of smouldering distortion and churns out a pair of tunes transcending the project's premise. "Flags of Freedom," with stacking stanzas released into majestic rusty harmonica, also contends. Alas, the hasty inspiration seems to have prevented the final essential spark - gripping guitar solos - from getting into the equation. Rats!

It's been mentioned this stuff is rehashed, 2nd-tier, slapdash. David Crosby (in his most recent memoir) recalls asking Young why such simple compositions - and Young responded, "I'm not giving up any of my good s--t just talking about George Bush."

...but as someone I thought intellectually honest, I can see where he's coming from. I'm a conservative Republican, and I too have the feeling that Bush sold us out. When ARE we going to attack Saudi Arabia anyways?

Neil Young-Living With War *****

Released in 2006 and Living With War was the return of Neil Young. What is ment by that is the return of authentic Neil, this is his first album in several years that is fully impassioned. You can since the ergency in Youngs songs here. Living With War is an album of satire and propaganda that you are either going to love or hate, there will be no middle ground with this album and Young lost and gained a number of fans over this album as well. Being a Canadian Young took a bold risk by making an entire album critisizing the American government. Now if he were to make an album about the Canadian parliment maybe that would be more suitable but then again Neil Young is about as American as you can get. This was a move I did not give a chance at first but then decided if I am a real Neil Young fan I will give it a chance and did and loved it.

Released in packaging that resembles a paper sack for authenticity and minimalism, which is what the entire album is about. It opens with 'After The Garden' a song about what will happen when the world ends in a nuclear holocaust. It is a rockin' track and one that really sets the pace for the album. Easily on of Neils better tracks as of late. 'Living With War,' the title trackis written from a soilders point of view. It is another great song witha chorus sure to grab your attention. 'The Restless Consumer' is easily the best song Young has released since Ragged Glory. With his patent harmonies as only his voice can deliver, and his conviction even if you disagree with what he is saying he makes you want to believe in it, and if you ask me that is the mark of a great song. The great guitar playing during the song is classic Neil Young. Destend to become and anthem is 'Shock And Awe.' A killer track with anthemic chorus' andpower resembling the power of the Young classic 'Rockin In The Freeworld' from the freedom album. The song speaks of days past with a less corrupt government so to speak. 'Families' is a great song with lots of good guitar work and great vocals, especially the harmonies. But the song does not realy do much to stand out on the album. 'Flags Of Freedom' is a great song. A song of hope and desperation at the same time. Speaking of the youth and how they have a voice and a choice to make and need to use both to change what needs to change. 'Lets Impeach The President' is forced and contrived to say the least. Though it does make the point, calling George W. Bush a Flip-Flopper but I just wish the song would have been written better, but the use of audio clips from Bush's speaches does add a nice touch. The song is entertaining to say the least even though it does stretch a little. 'Lookin For A Leader' is a personal favorite. It is a plea for a leader, a real, great upstanding leader of the old days to come and help rebuild the country and take it to the full potential. 'Roger And Out' is a slower song with some heavy guitar. One of the best songs on the album, easily. While the song is still slightly political it is really loosly political because there is much more subject matter behind it then just the government. The album ends with 'America The Beautiful' which is sung with an entire chior and done wonderfully. It is a really sentimental and touching way to end an album that is anything but that.

While I may not totally agree with Youngs views on the country (though some I do), and even though he is not an American citizen he does live in America and this album shows that. He clearly knows what he is singing about and you can really tell that the man loves his country. For those who say Neil has no buisness making and album like this and that this is not him, he is just an old hippie and it is about time that he released a politicaly charged album, and because he waited so long I am convinced that is why it turned out as fabulous as it did. This album is highly recomended.

2 out of 5 stars Young rehashing Young.......2007-04-10

Politics aside, most of the songs on here are not very original. As I listened to it, it seemed to me that Young was rehashing or recycling some of his earlier songs and licks. I think the only reason this CD got the press it did was because of the politics of the lyrics and Young flip-flopping on his earlier support of the war on terror (just like most of the Democrats). This is only for hardcore Young fans.

2 out of 5 stars Heavy Sigh.......2007-04-05

After reading several hundred reviews of this album (some very eloquent), I felt obliged to add just one thing more. As some have noted, Mr. Young has always been quite outspoken in his opinions and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, you can go back through his entire battery of work and find political themes everywhere and all over the map (I'll refer you to such songs as Southern Man, Ohio, Cortez the Killer, Inca Queen, Rockin' in the Free World, etc ...ad nauseum.) The fact he happens to have been born on Canadian soil is irrelevant. It has never stopped him from commenting on what he believes in and for that he should be commended.

That said, if you have not heard this record, I would strongly urge you to listen to at least 2 or 3 tracks BEFORE you make a purchase. If you are a fan of lyrics and you agree with Neil's political stance, you'll love this record. If you are on the opposite end politically you will despise it. However, whatever side you are on, I think if you listen to the music on its own, and take the lyrics out of it, you will find this may well be the weakest album Neil has ever put out (with the possible exception of the awful Everybody's Rockin). Every song sounds essentially the same and after awhile the politics, quite frankly, get boring. There is nothing on this record (musically) that is remotely worth saving (not to mention the production and sound quality stinks). Thus my 2 stars (I gave it 2 just because it's Neil Young).

A previous reviewer thought a potential buyer should go read the lyrics to the songs first. I wholly agree. If you are a die-hard NY fan, of course you'll need this for your collection. If you are a die-hard anti-Bush person, ditto. If you a fan of good music, pass on this one and move on to some of Neil's earlier work. I'd recommend Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or one of the more recent archive *live* recordings as a starting point.

This is definitely NOT the place to start if you're just getting into Neil Young.

One other thing for those that may not be aware, the notion of "Let's Impeach The President", while it may be quite trendy, is simply not possible unless one is a member of the United States Congress. Neil Young has no more chance of impeaching anyone than you or I do. But it does make for good fodder.
