Brings back those moments from high school and all the fun we were having. A great addition to my collection.

An Overlooked Gem.......2007-01-02

I remember first listening to FM album oriented rock n roll when the Night Moves lp was released. My first impression as a teenager was gosh that Night Moves song is so darn slow with overly repetitive chords. Mainstreet left me with a somewhat better impression. However rockers like The Fire Down Below, Come To Poppa, and Rock N Roll Never Forgets always had a hold on me. Somehow though the overplayed title track kept me from digging further into this LP.

Years passed and I began to appreciate Live Bullet- both the ballads and the rockers. I realized that Bob Seger certainly put out some great tunes. Some of his more modern stuff was a little hit and miss but overall the man was a talented songwriter as his words are really touching.

Since I absolutely love the cool edgy blues oriented Fire Down Below, I had to give this Night Moves CD another listen this time with more mature ears. I realized that these nine songs are all very good to excellent. Yes, I even like the slow moving Night Moves as the subject matter I can certainly relate to and carries a certain mysterious air. Most notably, the blend from fast to slow and different dynamics make the Night Moves CD very special.

I guess the lesson learned here is to always keep an open mind and one's appreciation for music is always evolving.

Remastered?.......2006-05-23

This is a great album. The only complaint I have is the remastering. About 2/3 through the song "Night Moves" there is a worbling in and out that sticks out like a sore thumb. It made me cringe. It sounded like a worn out cassette tape. I could've made a CD from an LP that would have sounded better than that mess. To me, it ruined the song. I'll have to listen from the greatest hits I suppose.

Seger's best work.......2004-02-28

This album is simply a killer. Bob Seger in those days was playing raw, essential rock and roll at its best.

There's not a loser on this whole album, but the title song is a must hear. And "The Fire Down Below" is the one of the best workouts a Telecaster will ever get. It's a smoking, hook-filled, howling rock masterpiece. Seger outdid himself on this album and never again reached this high water mark.

For the second of 1997's dueling Buddhist epics (the other being Seven Days in Tibet, scored by John Williams), director Martin Scorsese made a wise--if commercially challenging--choice in tapping noted minimalist composer Philip Glass to score Kundun. Glass (who's previously scored the avant garde documentary Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, Mishima, and the strange Candyman horror series), is the perfect choice here; his own Buddhist beliefs play a key role in meshing image and music. Glass's familiar compositional techniques are wedded on Kundun to a sensitive use of ethnic instruments and the voices of the Gyuto Monks, adding an aura of spiritual power missing from most Hollywood fare. --Jerry McCulley

Fabulous blending of music, film and subject.......2005-02-27

First, let me explain that I absolutely love the film Kundun.

I beleive it is a true work of art/ labor of love that didn't receive the recognition it so much deserves.

Let me skip to the big point-- the last 10 minutes of this film is a near perfect blend of music that is spot- on for the subject matter, which is enlightenment.

My guess is that a *very conscious* person had a lot to do with the creation, blending & timing of the music, script and film, especially for the last ten minutes-- OR that it was a total coincidence that it came out to be so near perfect. (either is very much in keeping with the movie's theme, which is NOT the Dalai Lama at all, but enlightenment)

Not for everyone, and I'm afraid I may have built it up in your mind too highly, so that you'll feel let down by the actual expereince of the music itself, I can say that *everytime* I listen to the last ten minutes especially (titled Escape to India), I cry for joy at *experiencing* a few minutes of the most sublime enlightenment, tears, sorrow & simple joy and wonder at being alive in this dance of life myself.

Thank you, Phillip Glass, Martin Scorcese and all those involved in this brilliant study of how a culture's focus on a single individual being assumed to be enlightened-- and his training to actually act the part, resulted in a person of great compassion, richness and insight.

In other words, their culture made him enlightened by treating him as enlightened.

What if we were all assumed to be enlightened and treated as such-- what difference would that make to you, at this very moment, dear reader, as you absorb these words? If that sentence has any impact on you at all, then you'll likely be *deeply moved* by both the movie and soundtrack.

Hypnotic.......2001-12-01

I may be in the minority of the reviewers here, in that I have never seen the movie "Kundun". I picked up this cd because it looked interesting (I know...u can't judge a book, or cd in this case, by it's cover), but I am a great experimentor and I love 'discovering' different forms and types of music. And this looked intriguing and different. I thought it might be hard to get into, but not at all. From the opening track I was spellbound. I find the whole album to be very dark and mysterious...captivating, hypnotic and spellbinding. It is unlike any soundtrack that I own, and I love it. I've been playing it straight for the last 3 days, and the more I hear it the more I find to like. It's a wonderful cd to relax and meditate too. It is very soothing. Now I just have to see the movie too. :)

Middling.......2000-05-23

You may like Glass, you may like his previous film music, but you may not like this. Just sharing the category I'm in!

Glass has done a lot of great work, and also a good deal of mediocre work, and this score is definitely in the latter. While it works well with the movie, listening to it on it's own is a disappointment. The difference between this and the great "Koyanisqaatsi" is important. The music for that movie was written with a core focus that permeates each piece, and althought the individuals sections are much longer than in "Kundun," interest never wanes. On this soundtrack, however, the trademark repetition never really catches hold, since there always seems to be a crucial musical element missing, as if there was nothing but accompaniment. While the tracks are briefer, they say very little, and there's no build up of musical drama. Of course, it's a soundtrack, and a good accompaniment to the other element of the movie, but as a stand alone recording it doesn't work.

this Glass guy is really getting to me.......2000-04-21

I used to HATE Philip Glass. I thought, how can such a no-talent hack get work-- all he does is make the same music and recycle it! Then I saw Koyanasqatsi and Powaqqatsi. Powaqqatsi really impressed me, particularly because of the music. I saw the CD sitting in a record store one day, and bought it (the clerk even forgot to charge me for it!)

Not less than a week ago I wrote a five-star review of the excellent Powaqqatsi soundtrack, relaying how great I thought the music was while knock, knocking Philip Glass for his repetition. After that I began browsing through the other Glass listings, listening to the samples. Later, I saw the Kundun DVD at my video store, and decided to watch it again. The next day, I searched out the soundtrack. I have to take back the statement I made about never having to hear another Glass score. Granted, all of his music seems to be variations of a similar theme, but he can take that in many directions. Kundun has an entirely different feel than Powaqqatsi. It is meditative, while Powaqqatsi is like a celebration of life. I own two Glass albums now, and now it seems likely that I'll own three (the Glass/Shankar collaboration looks appealing). I wouldn't have been able to fathom that a year ago.

Like Tibet:moving,haunting,enlightening..........1999-12-16

A film score like this comes around very rarely-Philip Glass''Kundun'is so powerful and inspired that one may wonder whether the music generated the brilliant movie or the other way around.However, I believe that this soundtrack is quite satisfying on its own;one does not really have to see the film in order to be moved by such a marvelous piece of work.

Bob Seger was seven years into his recording career and a regional rock star in the Detroit area when he broke nationally in 1976 with a concert album, Live Bullet, and his best-ever studio album, Night Moves. The song "Night Moves" is a brawny rock ballad about coming-of-age sexually; the album itself built on the experience of Seger's previous work to find him maturing artistically. Seger's a powerful singer who's always believed in the traditional rock trimmings of a big beat accompanied by Chuck Berry figures on the guitar and hammering riffs on the piano. He deploys such techniques with equal assurance on an oldie ("Mary Lou") and on his own heavier rockers ("The Fire Down Below," "Sunspot Baby"). But it was with songs like "Mainstreet" and "Night Moves" that he found a way to address the frustrations and fun of the working class lives of his primary audience. And with the rip-roaring "Rock and Roll Never Forgets," he produced an anthem that would keep them rocking way past the age of consent. --John Milward

I know it's amazing, someone under 13 is writing a review about Bob Seger. :->. Anyway, Bob Seger is probably the most underated musicians of all time. He is a great singer, song writer, pianist and a good guitar player. This album has awesome songs, I can choose a song at random and be impressed even if it is one of the first times I heard it. Night Moves is a masterpiece, especially Mainstreet. The riffs, the solos and the songs in general are all good. I can't think of a complaint but...Bob needs more respect. We hear bout Angus Young not getting enough respect as a guitar player but I know other kids that know Angus' name but not Bobs. So to all you moms and dads expose your children to one of the best men in the music industry. This is a great addition to any collection.

I got this album out at a party on Dec, 15, 2004 and the party was the Matrix
christmas party. Santa Claus, since I was so good, he gave me this album
in addition to Sultans of Swing/The Very Best of Dire Straits, and The Best of
War and More. So I gave 'The Best of War and More' to my sister "Angelica",
and then maybe gave it away for a christmas present to try to send to "Elissa
Steamer", and I thought she maybe interested in war! So I ordered Sultans of
Swing/The Very Best of Dire Straits about November and when I got the second on December 15, I gave Angelica my old copy and kept my new copy
of that album. When I got this album, I had to go to the record store after wards to buy 3 more CDs. They were 'Some Girls' by Rolling Stones, 'Greatest
Hits' by Guns N' Roses, & 'The Cars' by the Cars. After that, I had 5 CDs and
mom wouldn't let me buy anymore CDs till christmas. And by the time Christmas rolled in, I didn't get the albums I wanted, the only three I got was
'The Ragpickers Dream' by Mark Knopfler, 'AI' by Green Day, and 'a various
tribute to warren Zevon'. But when I got the last 5 on the 15th, I listened to all
4 exept Sultans of Swing/The Very Best of Dire Straits. First I listened to this
album. It had a song I have not even heard in the last 6 months, "The Fire Down Below". Then after that, I listened to the Cars, they had 4 songs I care
about, I thought it was better than most albums by the Cars. Then after that,
I listened to Some Girls, it had Shattered I heard on it. Then finally Guns n Roses greatest Hits. Later when I listened to this album, I heard two of the other songs I donno, "Rock N' Roll Never Forgets", and "Night Moves". I didn't
like both songs. I only liked one. That's the story about this album. Thank
you!

The Best CD to Listen To.......2004-11-16

I love this CD. "Night Moves" is a good song to listen to. It's about first sexual experience and it's not graphic. The texts are subtle but you know what he is singing about. And the other song, "Shame on Moon" is a very romantic ballad that one can listen to over and again. He depicts the different personalities of men shedding some positive light on them. This is a great CD to listen to. It's good enough for me.

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Fantastic!!!!!!.......2006-03-15

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Crowded House grab your attention and hold onto it for this entire CD. Australia seem to produce a lot of wonderful artists in the music industry and Crowded House is right up there with them. Their music is fresh and new. A must listen to those who have never heard of or listened to them. The songs here are all equally good if not great. I love them and I love this CD. Buy it and see why for yourselves.

i can not believe no one has rated probably one of the greatest albums ever made. this album is the best seger album to date and is a stand alone no holes barred good to the very last cut piece of rock legend that needs the dignity of a glowing review. so come on seger fans rock and roll never forgets or in some cases forgives

With '90s classics like "Things That Make You Go Hmm," and "Oops Up," this album makes a great party mix, especially for 20 and 30-somethings who remember the songs from their younger days. It's just too bad it's not longer.
