Pearl [Original recording remastered] [Special Edition]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Janis Joplin's highest charting and arguably most artistically successful album gets the deluxe, expanded treatment on this 2005 reissue. Already re-released once with four extra live tunes, this edition moves those to the second disc, adds nine more (six previously unavailable) from the same summer 1970 tour that predated the original album's January 1971 posthumous release and pads the studio disc with six additional tracks. Those sides--three are inferior, if moderately interesting alternate takes, one is a band jam without Joplin contributing--don't bring much to the table other than to prove that producer Paul A. Rothchild used the correct versions for the final album. But Pearl holds up tremendously well, with Janis focused on some terrific rocking material, yet widening her scope to include a soulful folksy reading of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee," the album's only major hit. The real meat of this version consists of the thirteen concert recordings, plucked from the Canadian leg of Joplin's only tour with Full Tilt Boogie. It finds her and the band chugging through ragged but emotionally charged versions of her classics, along with a few tunes from the forthcoming Pearl. Sequenced to mirror her set list, it's a roaring example of Joplin in her prime, comfortable with her band and confident in her astounding abilities to tear into the soul of blues and R&B with vocals that come straight from the heart. Loosely based on the popular Disney theme park audio-animatronic ride, one might expect a modicum of good-natured "Yo-ho-ho-ing"--or maybe a little rousing Korngold/Errol Flynn/Captain Blood orchestral romanticism--here. Instead composer Klaus Badelt initially entices us with some sparing Celtic folk charm, then unleashes a furious broadside of symphonic and choral thunder to rival his ominous score for K-19. The composer's fellow German mentor is an obvious influence throughout (the album is credited with a wink as "Score overproduced by Hans 'Long John' Zimmer") but Badelt brings his own muscular instincts to bear throughout. Perhaps shrewdly realizing that genre cliches are nothing if not for reinventing, Badelt delivers his rhythmically nervous Eurocentric sensibilities--sort of Holst duels Shostakovich on the Spanish Main--with the subtlety of a scorching cannonball. It's seasoned with a little romantic respite in the final act, if a bit gingerly, and could no doubt profit by some of Korngold's sparkling melodic verve. But it's a loud, unabashed Summer Blockbuster score at heart; alert the neighbors. --Jerry McCulley

Great music.......2007-07-08
A great soundtrack from a wonderful movie. Too bad the second and third pirates movies weren't as good as the first. Regardless, great soundtrack.

i saw the movie which i recommend to buy now from amazon,i recommend to buy the three movies and have all the selection of pirates of the caribbean, this soundtrack is something that put you in the movie, words can't describe this cd,click, buy and you will see
yes, all true, but the sound!!!.......2007-06-28
I agree with the other reviewers about the music, which is fine, but also want to point out that this is a terrific work-out for sound systems with REAL sub woofers (not the scrawny boxes that say they are, but aren't). If you have a room shaker system, down to like 15 Hz, this is for you. The deepest and most sustained bass I have ever heard.
Secret - listen for hints of Gladiator and Mission Imossible. He helped with those films - maybe they are little inside jokes?
awesomee.......2007-06-21
I'm not a huge fan of classical music, but many of the songs in this soundtrack melted my heart. :) Some were not *that* good, but some were just very incredible, which makes it worth five stars !

I love this soundtrack!
The music is perfect to listen at work or driving.

Perhaps it's the color scheme and imagery on the slipcase art for Live at the Gorge, recalling Roger Dean's classic 1970s-era album jackets, but this 7-disc set of live Pearl Jam feels warmly retro. Fans will concur, of course, since the 100 tracks favor Ten and Vs. And let's not kid ourselves, it'll be mostly committed fans that buy Gorge, given the sprawl and the fact that several tunes appear three times. That fact alone is retro: Fans buy live albums; generalists stay away. What fans will get--and generalists miss--here is an old-school, road-proved rock throwdown, from start to finish. Eddie Vedder's connection to fans is palpable in the between-song chatter and the Brit-style sing-a-longs (not to mention the Tom Petty goading he has going strong on the 2005 gig or the two appearances of Petty's "I Won't Back Down"). The general soundscape goes like this: The 2005 set is somber and slow-to-build, with its highlight in "I Believe in Miracles" as a show-opener. The 2006 discs, all four of them, are heated and gritty, with the final show's opening, "Severed Hand," providing a great vantage point into Pearl Jam's version of what Keith Richards calls "guitar weaving." It was a sweltering day at the Gorge (in George, Washington, no less), and the music embodies the heat. --Andrew Bartlett

From the time of their spectacular arrival 17 years ago, Pearl Jam has continually earned and maitained the respect of one of popular music's most devoted followings. Live at the Gorge represents why. Weighing in at 7 1/2 hours of unparalleled, nonstop, incendiary rock 'n' roll, this box set faithfully presents an all-time legend at the height of their power.

Pearl Jam rewards their fans again.......2007-07-13
Pearl Jam is the most important band to emerge in the early 90's and really the only one that has stood the test of time. That is a huge testament to quality of their music, and the best showcase for their music has always been their live performances. Fortunately for us fans, a few years ago the band decided to start releasing their live performances and ever since we have had a wealth of live Pearl Jam to enjoy. Some fans may have already downloaded one or more of the shows included in this set (as I had), but this box set still remains a worthwhile investment, even if you have downloaded the shows. It provides that tactile feel that is missing from downloaded music (although kudos to PJ for including pictures and artwork with the downloads). Plus the sound quality tends to be better. The packaging is similar to the 03 bootlegs with tri-fold cardboard cases containing each of the three shows. The artwork is nice, with the outer covers giving a sense of the natural environment of the Gorge, with the inside containing what appear to be images of the Gorge under construction (?).
The 05 show is contained on Discs 1 - 3. Disc 1 is an acoustic set, similar to the Mansfield set from 03. This particular set list is not as strong as the Mansfield acoustic set, but is still enjoyable and includes Hard to Imagine. Discs 2 and 3 contain the remainder of the show, and a number of rarities including Alone, Sad and Undone. Other notable songs include Dissident, MFC, Not for You, and In My Tree. The only downside of this show is that the attempts to annoy Tom Petty occasionally take away from the music, in my opinion.
Discs 4 and 5 contain the first 06 show and this show is the highlight of the entire box set. A great set list is highlighted by Wash, great performances of Corduroy and Hail Hail, Down, Daughter/It's OK, and Blood. But it is the first encore (Disc 5) that really shines. The band plays through Footsteps, Once, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Crown of Thorns, Leash and Porch without stopping. This is a real treat for fans of older Pearl Jam as these are all classics - but the best is yet to come when they play the rarely played Dirty Frank in the closing set.
Discs 6 and 7 contain the second 06 show and again fans are treated to some gems including God's Dice, In Hiding, Green Disease, Betterman/Save it for Later, the re-worked Garden, Rats, and Whipping. They close with Yellow Ledbetter, to which Mike adds the Star Spangled Banner. Those familiar with the 06 tour know that Mike frequently played the Star Spangled Banner during Yellow Ledbetter, and together with Eddie's vaguely anti-war lyrics, this classic song has taken on a whole new meaning, one that is especially relevant given the current state of affairs in the world.
In summary, Pearl Jam continues to reward their fans by making their live shows available, in one format or another, for reasonable prices. This set is no exception and it highlights the greatest band doing what they do best. A great mix of classic songs, new versions of songs, and rare songs make this set especially attractive. This is a must have.
Fantastic Live Shows.......2007-07-10
Pearl Jam have put out so many live records/bootlegs its hard to even count, but these 3 shows from the Gorge will always be considered to be some of their best. I know many PJ fans say these shows were in the top 5 best shows of the bands 2006 tour. Thats saying something because the band is 95% of the time just flat out incredible live. Im sure people have their own opinions about which of these shows was the best. I can just say that if you love their music or are wanting to get into the bands music this is the best place to start. The band sounds so fresh and energetic here. The whole box set sounds amazing and was remastered very well with everything sounding VERY crisp and clean. The setlists cover a wide variety of songs that are just played perfect for the most part. There are very few mistakes or flub ups made by the band during these shows. There is actually only about 3 or 4 that really stick out and with 3 whole shows clocking in over 7 hours that aint bad. The band was most certainly tight during those shows.
The first show recorded on September 1st 2005, not September 5th like the box says, is the second best show of the set in my eyes. The first disc of this show is just incredible and is worth 40 bucks alone. The band opens up with I Believe In Miracles. Ive NEVER heard a version of this song I liked better. Its really the best Ive ever heard, not to mention a lot of other PJ fans can agree. The takes on Low Light, I Am Mine, Crazy Mary, and Black are also some of the best Ive heard. When I was listening to Black on that disc I actually cried! Ive heard the song hundreds of times, but that version did it for me. The only mistake on this disc is where Eddie messes up the lyrics on Off He Goes, but its forgivable and he just laughs it off. I cant forget the awesome version of Hard To Imagine. The band doesnt play this one much, so its certainly a huge plus. Eds voice has never sounded better. Whoever thinks Ed Vedder has lost his pipes should listen to this. The second disc starts off with the only version of Given To Fly I even listen to. I think the song is overplayed, but this one has the energy like no other. Other stong takes on this disc are Last Exit, Save You, Alone, Sad, Not For You, Dissident, and Undone. Some of those songs are hard to come by live and they are played perfect. Ed messes up on Do The Evolution and Insignificance, but I believe he just got too excited. Disc 3 also has a few good versions of Love Boat Captain, Last Kiss, and Blood. Theres the version of I Wont Back Down thats a little rusty, but is played better on the third show of the box set. The September 1st show was a great one. Really an all around perfect live performance.
The second show recorded on July 22nd 2006 is my personal favorite out of the entire box set. It makes my top 10 favorite PJ shows for sure. The setlist, the energy, and the whole vibe is just WOW. Not to mention the show opens up with a killer take on Wash. I havent got the room to type all the great versions on this show because nearly all are great! The ones that stick out the most as being special are Hail Hail, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Black, Insignificance, Life Wasted, and Blood on the first disc. The second disc is the real treat in my eyes. So many awesome songs that are played perfect. Once, Alive now Ed can certainly belt this one out, State of Love and Trust played so sweetly, Leash, Porch, Inside Job, and Go are all just mind blowingly excellent. The performance of Last Kiss is most likely the best Ive heard... ever. I usually dont like the song live, but its really good here. I didnt list Footsteps because this version is in a league of its own. My God, Ed has never sung the song better. It sends little chills through my whole body. Cant forget Dirty Frank, this song isnt played much at all. Its really cool to hear this live. Ed can still sing it good too. This show is just fantastic anyway you can look at it.
The last show from the Gorge Box Set is my least favorite, but is by no means anywhere near bad. Its still incredible, but compared with the other two shows it lacks. The first disc is the best of this show. I love opening up with Severed Hand. Other really great versions are In Hiding where Eds voice sounds great, Marker In The Sand, and Army Reserve sounds better here than on the studio version. This discs last 5 songs are just pure intense energy. Its so good to hear Garden, Jeremy, and Why Go played with so much energy and raw passion. Garden sounds better here than on the studio version for sure. Its another song where Ed sounds better now than he ever has. I cant believe people say the band sounded better in the early 90s. They sound better here to me. The second disc has good takes on Life Wasted, Big Wave, Satans Bed, Alive, and a wicked version of Crazy Mary. So this show can really hold its ground as being awesome too.
If you read all this Im sorry its long, but with 7 whole discs of music theres a lot to cover. I highly recommend this set to anyone who likes rock music or is just a casual PJ fan. You cant beat 7 discs for 40 bucks. This set just shows how great this band is, how talented, and how hard these boys still rock. God, I wish I could have been a teen in the 90s to hear them!
Classic live box, must have it..........2007-07-10
Well it's hard to say something bad about this boxset because it's perfect. You get more than 7 hours of live rock music for only $40, great setlists and many rarities.
Sept. 1st 2005
One show = 36 songs, what to say. On first 3 cd's you can find classic songs like "Black", "Small Town", "Even Flow", "Daughter", "State of Love and Trust", "Alive", "Last Kiss", "Betterman", "Yellow Ledbetter"... and many rarities like "Man of the Hour", "Hard to Imagine", "Alone", "Undone", "Crown of Thorns", "Sad"... plus they played 3 great covers "I Believe in Miracles" (Ramones), "I Won't Back Down" (Tom Petty) and "Baba O'Riley" (Who). They also played "Love Boat Captain", song written after Roskilde tragedy in 2000.
July 22nd & 23rd 2006
Last two shows on American Tour in 2006. On these 4 cd's you can hear almost the whole new album they had released in 2006 (selftitled album "Pearl Jam"). Again, like in 2005 they played many rarities like "Mamasan Trilogy" (Footsteps, Once, Alive), "Leash", "Dirty Frank", "Wash", "Down", "God's Dice", "In Hiding", "Garden", "Rats", Jimi Hendrix "Little Wing" and Neil Young "Rockin' in the Free World" and "F*ckin' up" plus many classics...
After all, if you decide to buy this box, trust me, you won't regret because this box is a piece of art.
Notice: tracklisting on Amazon is incorrect:
Sept. 1st 2005: 1st cd has 9 songs, 2nd cd has 17 songs, 3rd cd has 11 songs
July 22nd 2006: 1st cd has 17 songs, 2nd cd has 15 songs
July 23rd 2006: 1st cd has 18 songs, 2nd cd has 13 songs
9/10.......2007-07-07
Seven discs of live Pearl Jam for a reasonable price. I couldn't turn it down, even though I already own the July 22 show, which I also had the privilege of attending. It's a nice colorful box set of digipacks, the only downside being that it does not contain any liner notes or pictures of the shows.
But packaging aside, here is some vital information I assembled that might be useful to some of you who may be indecisive as to whether or not to acquire this box. I did a tally of all the songs and arranged them by era, based on the studio albums, so you can quickly see how many songs you're getting from whatever albums you love. Non-LP songs include b-sides and session songs. (Yeah, I was bored at work.) So here are the album-eras of Pearl Jam, followed by the number of songs performed live in this box set:
Ten ......... 12 (eight LP, four non-LP)
Vs. .......... 11 (nine LP, two non-LP)
Vitalogy .... 7
No Code .... 3
Yield ......... 5
Binaural .... 3 (two LP, one non-LP)
Riot Act .... 6 (four LP, two non-LP)
Pearl Jam ... 12
Covers ...... 8
Other ........ 3
Amidst the three long shows, totaling exactly 100 tracks (there are tracks not listed on Amazon for some reason), there are five threepeated songs (Evenflow, Alive, Corduroy, Given to Fly, and Yellow Ledbetter). As you can tell from the tally, it's a good mix of material; not entirely representative of every album, but most likely representative of the albums that the majority of people want to hear (i.e. Ten and Vs.). But all the performances are spot-on and well done by the band, and of course there's a lot of mid-song banter that gives that "realness" to the shows, and makes you feel like you were there even if you weren't. So if you're a fan, there's really no reason not to pick this up.
A couple of side notes: Among the "other" songs is a dual performance of Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns," which they have been playing fairly often in the past few years. I didn't think it fair to consider that a cover song. Also included in the later versions of Yellow Ledbetter is a Hendrix tribute that McCready has been squeezing in in recent shows, which includes excerpts from "Little Wing" and "The Star-spangled Banner," the former of which is covered as a separate track on the last disc.
Great collection of live Pearl Jam.......2007-07-06
All three of these shows pretty much cover all the bases of pearl jam live. All of the hits, some rarities and some great covers. I was at the first Gorge show ('05) and knew right away that I was experiencing one of the great P.J. shows. I didn't even know this set was going to be released and was quite excited to see it on the store shelf and purchased it immediately. If you're a fan of Pearl Jam's albums or of their live show I do not see how you could be disappointed in this collection. This set is also an excellent introduction for the casual fan to Pearl Jam's live show, with three unique set lists to absorb. Recommended!!

In an era when pop nihilism fulfilled its dark promise all too regularly, Pearl Jam not only survived, but thrived to become one of rock's greatest bands. This 33-track double-disc career retrospective documents the arc of a career that went from arena and radio triumphs in the early 90's (while Nirvana's promise imploded in the wake of hype, Pearl Jam's crowd-pleasing fame only burgeoned) to the uncompromising, core audience-focused tack that carried the band into the 21st century. Shrewdly compiled by the band into an "Up" disc that chronicles the band's driving, Stone Gossard-Mike McCready fueled hard rock dramatics (including such early career landmarks as "Jeremy," "Alive" and "Even Flow" alongside more aggressive fare like "Go" and "Spin the Black Circle") and a "Down" side that focuses more on Eddie Vedder's brooding, often dark ballads ("Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town," "Yellow Ledbetter," their unlikely hit cover of the oldie "Last Kiss"), it's a collection that underscores both the band's range and musical integrity. Though centered largely on the band's pre-Vitalogy studio era and containing no new material, longtime producer/collaborator Brendan O'Brien contributes remixes of "Once," "Alive" and "Black" that offer new insights on the familiar, while non-album tracks like "Man of the Hour" and "State of Love and Trust" considerably enhance the overall listening perspective here. --Jerry McCulley

Seatle sound.......2007-07-06
This IS the early 90s sound. Between Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Sonic Youth grunge would never have made it. A great CD for any collection
Great compilation.......2007-06-27
If you're like me, you bought Ten and then never really got into Pearl Jam much afterwards. If that sounds about right, then this compilation is for you. It had everything I was looking for and more.
good band.......2007-03-09
My review is short and simple. This CD is worth the money. So pay up and enjoy.
It came fast and i perfect condition.......2007-02-16
My CD came on time and in perfect condition.
Very well-compiled collection.......2007-02-16
I bought this 2CD set upon its release in December 2004 because I had wanted to collect Pearl Jam songs I'd liked back in the 1990's, and up to that point, I owned none of their music. Many of the hits on here weren't played on the radio stations I was listening to at the time, so a lot of this music was new to me. I'm rating this 4 stars because it is a well-compiled collection of 33 songs that should appeal to non-core fans like myself who don't own all of Pearl Jam's studio albums, but who like many of their songs. Pearl Jam is a great rock band, they write intelligent lyrical songs, and the guitar, bass and drum players create thunderous power on many of their strong songs.
Best songs in my opinion: Immortality, I Got ID, Given To Fly, Not For You, I Am Mine, Even Flow, Once, and especially the awesome song Jeremy - one of the most powerful songs of the decade and despite its chilling subject matter, my favourite song of theirs .

Addendum.......2007-01-13
I have been a PJ fan since the mid-nineties and own hundreds of their albums, CDs, bootlegs, etc. So when I say to buy this I can't help being a little bit biased.
That aside, with no disrespect to reviewer Timothy J. Mccoy, this review was meant to make an addendum to his review: Only if you purchase this album straight from an independent record store would you be supporting said stores. Amazon is not an independent record store, and Live at Easy Street was released on J Records, owned and operated by Sony BMG. Nothing independent about that.
Also as a side note, if you are a bootleg collector, PJ performed 16 songs at this show, so if you are a completist you may want to find the complete show via audience recording.
Just For Fans.......2007-01-06
If you're Pearl Jam Fan, you have to get this itme inside your collection.
Good stuff .......2007-01-04
This EP is a nice addition for any collector of Pearl Jam, some rare cover tunes here and a surprised audience as well. Also when purchasing this you are supporting independent record stores as this is not on sale at Best Buy etc.
So cool to stumble on this.......2006-08-18
We have been spoiled with a wealth of great Pearl Jam stuff lately with the new album, the VH1 Storytellers show and this.
The Pearl Jam songs are of course wonderful but I love the covers. These guys are my age so when they pull out covers of rockin' songs from my youth (Clash, Who, Split Enz, etc.) I get excited. I never thought of Pearl Jam as a hardcore band but Bleed For Me totally works and reeling in John Doe for a cover of New World is genius.

Part of the '90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ's rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nearly superseded the music. But before that, they were a simply an in-your-face, in-your-head, loud, melodic rock band. And lead singer Eddie Vedder was known for his possessed stage presence and a primal growl that sounded like it required three vocal chords. The personal, narrative singles "Alive," "Jeremy," and "Even Flow" catapulted the reluctant band into the 10-million-plus-sales division. Subsequent albums are more intricate, subtle, thematically complex, and, in many ways, better than Ten. But the band may never repeat the stampede caused by this debut. --Beth Bessmer
Customer Reviews:
Ten is not their best in my honest opinion.........2007-07-13
I have just gotten in to Pearl Jam, and after listening to their first 3 albums MANY times, I think I can safely say that TEN is NOT their best out of the three. I personally thought the biggest weakness in this album was how EVERY track sounded the same. I mean I seriously couldnt tell which track was which. Thats not to say the album is terrible...I think its actually quite good, just not the amazing ground breaking album everyone makes it out to be.
"Once", "Even Flow", "Alive", "Jeremy" and "Black" are superb songs which are gems on their own. I actually cannot class this as a grunge album...Vedders vocals are way too spot on and great, the music is quite normal rock music and the production isnt so distorted. They DID go more grunge with VS. and VITALOGY, my more preffered albums.
Overall, Im not comparing this to Nirvana's NEVERMIND which I believe is a better grunge record, but this album isnt the best ever...Try out VS. and VITALOGY..they capture what the band want to do and succeed very well.

One of the best albums off all time.......2007-07-11
One of the best albums off all time, seriously. This album meant so much to me when it first came out. It really spoke to me at that time in my life. Years later I find it is still a solid album. Your collection needs this album :)
A Perfect Ten.......2007-06-29
There is a reason that this cd has been considered by many to one of the greatest debuts of all time. Every single song on this cd is absolutely perfect. I just can't get enough of this cd. The lyrics are unforgettable, i.e. "Try to erase this from the blackboard" from Jeremy, and "I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky" from Black, and Mike McCready delivers some of the best guitar solos of any grunge band of the day. And no one but Eddie Vetter could pull of such beautiful singing, and to me he might be one of the greatest vocalists of all time, along with Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. So if you're only going to buy one Pearl Jam cd (you're crazy) make it this one. You won't be disappointed.
A Pure 100% Masterpiece.......2007-06-13
Ten, the first Pearl Jam album, has always been a great record ever since it came out. Very highly rated, and it truly deserves it. Even though I dont regard this album as Pearl Jams best, by no means so, it has aged very well and still sounds amazing. The album is just pure raw energy put into music form. Its hard to believe how much emotion/energy is put into these songs. If you listen to the lyrics in every song you can feel Eddie Vedders pain as he grew up. All the lyrics are awesome resulting in very good songwriting. That songwriting is amongst the best the band has ever done. Mike Mccready is one of my favorite guitarists as well. His work on the album is one of his best for sure. The solos and all are just mindblowing. Not because they are complex or hard to play, but because they all are played with feel, not complexity. The whole album just feels like one big rush of angry emotion. This is a masterpiece and always will be.
A truly legendary album that stands the test of time.......2007-04-07
I remember when this album was first released - I was 12 years old, and just really starting to get heavily into music. My real captivation with grunge started with Nirvana - I saw the music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and was just captivated - it was a far cry from the music that had been extremely popular in the late eighties (songs like "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals, for example). Then, here comes Pearl Jam, with a very different sound than Nirvana (more influenced by classic rock than punk), but an equally invigorating and new one. This album was just HUGE in its time, and the main hits ("Even Flow," "Alive," and "Jeremy") were played EVERYWHERE. Even if you were a fan of Pearl Jam, it was pretty hard not to get tired of them as this album continued to sell in massive quantities all through the nineties.
In retrospect, it was truly an important album that helped shape an entire decade of music, and ushered in a truly legendary (albeit brief) era. Grunge. All of a sudden, sounding original and being musically talented were in style, and "Ten" is one of the key albums that paved the way for nearly all of the now legendary bands of the 90's (such as Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins).
And, musically, it truly holds up over time, because Pearl Jam are a band that are truly talented. The time in which "Ten" was released may have helped catapult them to the top of the charts, but their artistry is what has kept them there throughout their career. Listening to "Ten" now is actually more enjoyable for me than it was, say, ten years ago when I'd heard it so many times I knew every word.
Recommended strongly to any fan of rock music.

If its debut album 15 years ago made Pearl Jam apprehensive with success, the Seattle quintet better buckle in for a return to eminence. On its eighth studio release--and first since 2002--the band socks away the adventurous experimentation that dogged some of its most recent records to investigate a post-September 11, war-ravaged world overflowing with urgency and significance. "It's the same everyday in a hell manmade/What can be saved, and who will be left to hold her?" lead singer Eddie Vedder wonders in "World Wide Suicide," one of several contemptuous rants on the Bush administration. Yet the album's spark is more than political. Songs like "Life Wasted," "Comatose" and "Big Wave" embrace the garage-rock past, as guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard play off each other with the primal lucidity of a decade ago and drummer Matt Cameron, one of rock's best, adds raw backing vocals to Vedder's polished craft. But Pearl Jam also turns up some of its most harmonious works since "Daughter," including "Marker in the Sand," with its radio-ready chorus, the tuneful "Parachutes" paced by Gossard's divine strumming, and the burning narrative and Urge Overkill punch of "Umemployable." Finally Vedder pleads for a lover's return in "Come Back," a keyboard-soaked love song complete with a chilling Gossard solo. It's got a soulfulness that begs for Sam Cooke to sing it and an originality that shows that a vibrant and cocksure Pearl Jam is back in town--and ready to retake the world. --Scott Holter

Classic Pearl Jam!!.......2007-07-10
First off I am a huge Pearl Jam fan, I own all their albums including many bootlegs. I was a little young during their hayday but like them better than than 99% of the stuff put out today. This album is the most consistently good album the band has ever but together. That being said it is still not my favorite. The songs are all solid, my favorites being Life Wasted, Marker in the Sand, Parachutes, Unemployable and Come Back. However no songs reach the heights of Vitalogy, Vs, or even Riot Act. I think those who like classic Pearl Jam like Ten or Vs should check this out.
A Definite Improvement But Falls Short Of Potential!.......2007-06-21
On May 2, 2006, one of the most popular and influential artists of their time, Pearl Jam, releases their eighth studio album simply entitled "Pearl Jam" with promises to deliver a sound reminiscent of their early grunge days. Although the band kept their promise, including heavy "Vitalogy"-like guitars and a notable return of Eddie Vedder's dominant vocal style, the album as a whole fell short of the band's potential only surpassing "Yield" and "Riot Act" in quality.
Highlights of the album such as the songs "Life Wasted, "Gone" and "Inside Job" provide Pearl Jam fans with classic, hard-hitting tunes while the remainder of the album leaves something more to be desired either lyrically and musically. Much respect should be given to the band for attempting to revive the formula that has brought them more than a decade of success, however, albums such as "Ten," "Vs," "Vitalogy," "No Code" and "Binaural" better represent the potential of Pearl Jam. Below, please find the rating for each song individually:
Life Wasted - 10/10
World Wide Suicide - 7/10
Comatose - 6/10
Severed Hand - 5/10
Marker In The Sand - 7/10
Parachutes - 7/10
Unemployable - 7/10
Big Wave - 6/10
Gone - 9/10
Wasted (Reprise) - 5/10
Army Reserve - 7/10
Come Back - 8/10
Inside Job - 10/10
I like It...........2007-06-18
It's not their best effort. The songs are heavy and some are fast-paced which always a good thing. For a rock album, its good. For a Pearl Jam album, its ok.
THE AVOCADO AVALANCHE.......2007-06-13
PEARL JAM's ASTOUNDING COMEBACK WITH ONE OF THE MOST AWAITED ALBUMS OF 2006 PROVES THAT THE SEATTLE BASED QUINTET HAS BEEN MASTERFUL IN THE ART OF REMAINING A RELEVANT VOICE FOR PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF ROCK AFICIONADOS.
BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel
It was with the first jamming power chords of their anthemic and revolutionary debut album "TEN", back in 1991, that Pearl Jam really brushed up the rusty edges of mainstream rock's conformism and lack of creativity of the previous decade. Now, fifteen years, more than half a dozen studio albums and over one hundred official bootlegs later, this colossal musical mammoth - bred from the fusion of Hendrix's bluesy guitar lines and elements of 70's classic rock - returns from a 4-year creative hiatus with an enthusiastic appetite for re-conquering its throne in the Alternative Rock circuit.
With a tempting overdose of heavily distorted guitar driven tunes, finely calibrated with a pure dose of freshly revitalized and angst-filled lyricism, "PEARL JAM", the Seattle quintet's 8th studio achivevement to date, also known informally among fans as the "Avocado Album", has rapidly established itself as a promising new milestone for the band, quite nearly duplicating the "sound and feel" of the early 90's primal grunge atmosphere.
What most fans might have realized by now with this release is that gone are the days of Vedder's personal lament and melodrama. Instead, the plot that "PEARL JAM" so merciless and competently explores through-out most of its tracks concerns a series of unfolding events which are all direct by-products of crass post-9/11 domestic and foreign affairs policies. Ultimately, with its sharp stinging verses aimed at the Bush Administration, the album is a wake-up call for world-wide alertness. Such thesis is revealed true by the content of songs such as "World Wide Suicide", "Life Wasted", "Army Reserve", and "Marker In The Sand".
Eddie Vedder and Company evoke nostalgic glories of an era when the Seattle quintet was a fearless locomotive of youthful bliss - a time when the group's performances were marked by its frontman's outrageous defiance of gravity, as he leaped for the crowd through remarkable stage-dives. In addition to Vedder's undeniable charisma and astounding vocal qualities, Pearl Jam's reputation as a state-of-the-art musical act has also been relying on the thrusting machine-gun riffing power of guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. The "kitchen" has always been subject to constant drummer replacements during the band's history. However, as of the 1998 "LIVE ON TWO LEGS" tour, bassist Jeff Ament finally found a permanent drumming force in the figure of the virtuoso-percussionist Matt Cameron.
Whether "PEARL JAM" is your very first-hand experience with the band, or if you're a seasoned die-hard fan striving along the last 15 years accompanying the band's musical trajectory, the least you can expect is a thrilling rush of musical ecstasy provided by one of the band's most mature and relevant accomplishments to date. Although not always as dazzling as the first three releases, "PEARL JAM" is a mandatory pick for any serious rock junkie.
***** FIVE STARS! The boys are back in business!!!
"If nothing is everything, then I will have it all".......2007-06-12
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
This is the best album from Ed and Co. in almost a decade. Being one of the last bands standing from the so-called "Grunge" era, they have transcended their original label and have truly become a "rock" band. In this self-titled album, Vedder holds nothing back as he takes on subjects that have resonated throughout Pearl Jam's 15+ year career. While there may be threads between the subjects of the songs, the edge to this record is what makes it a great piece of work. From taking on the Administration in Washington in the first Single "World Wide Suicide," to the self-affirming "Life Wasted," the band is top notch in both sound and message.
Some of the best material on this album pays homage to the bands biggest influences. Thanking Pete Townsend for a borrowed lyric in the song "Gone," Vedder crafts a Springsteen-esque journey of a person who leaves town in an effort to get a fresh start on life. Songs like "Unemployable" tap the "man of the people" feel of both Springsteen and Neil Young.
One of the best songs was actually penned almost entirely by guitarist Mike McCready. Brought to the table all but complete, this song travels down the path of self-realization and of healing. It is very layered musically, and it is simply beautiful. There is a lot of straight rock on this album too. "Comatose" and "Severed Hand" are both loud and edgy. "Marker in the Sand" is moderately paced, but is just another stunning example of the quality found on this record.
There really aren't many weak points on this album. All of the songs have played well to the audiences during the 2006 tour to support the release of this record. If you like this, go to their website, you can download any of the shows from this past year's tour. Grand Rapids Michigan at Van Andel Arena and the shows at the United Center in Chicago are especially good.

Janis Joplin made the blues her own. Though she didn't live to finish this album before her 1970 death from a heroin overdose, her intense passion and frantic cries of pain and ecstasy were enough to make Pearl one of the most memorable recordings of her era. Her band does fill up some vinyl with the instrumental "Buried Alive in the Blues," but it's the vocals that make this album worth hearing these many decades later. Listen to the tortured heartbreak of "Cry Baby" or the hopeful declarations of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee" and understand why Joplin remains an essential, if tragic, figure in pop. This reissue of Joplin's final album includes four live bonus tracks recorded during the 1970 Canadian Festival Express Tour. --Steve Appleford
Customer Reviews:
GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.......2007-03-17
Arguably one of the best rock and blues albums in history Pearl, from start to finish, was a perfect coming-of-age release for Janis Joplin, who was just beginning to peak both critically and commercially as an artist. The quality and polished treatment of this studio album, released after Joplin's death due to a drug overdose, make one ponder how tragic the loss of Joplin was and question just what might have been.
Very good organ and guitar arrangements are prevalent throughout, especially in the introductory track, Move Over, and the final one, namely Get It While You Can. In between are the popular favorites Me and Bobby McGee (written by Kris Kristofferson) and the a capella Mercedes Benz.
As one listens to the other tracks that accompany, especially Cry Baby and Buried Alive in the Blues, he or she just might receive the impression that Janis was going to give what was going to be her next album an extra special treatment, both lyrically and vocally, as if it very well could be both her final and signature release. Indeed, Janis did appear to tap into a whole new dimension of artistry, somehow amalgamating the emotions of anger and sorrow and bringing them under control with pleasant overtones reflecting a newly-formed sage with a very refined perspective on life.
Pearl, perhaps the greatest of the great from Joplin, will convince many that this one female singer will always remain a unique vocalist who will never be equaled or adequately imitated. Ironically, viewpoints parallel to those regarding Janis' vocal range have been firmly held regarding the unique guitar instrumentations thus enduring musical accomplishments of another blues artist who died at the same age, 27, during the same year, 1970, as Janis, namely Jimi Hendrix.
A Real Pearl .......2007-02-23
My favorite Joplin album, even though I'll grant that Cheap Thrills is a better set of songs. The reason I prefer Pearl is that it's better performed than Thrills, with several of Janis' most memorable songs: Move Over, Cry Baby, Half Moon, A Woman Left Lonely, posthumous #1 Me & Bobby McGee, and Get It While You Can. She occasionally slips into soft-rock irrelevancy (My Baby; Truet Me), and while the solo vocal on Mercedes-Benz is innovative, it's not one of her better songs. Regardless, this is Janis' best set of material in her all-too-short career. As usual, Janis' voice is in top form throughout, and the Full Tilt Boogie Band is far surperior to Big Brother & the Holding Company.
Very disappointed........2007-02-14
I grew up listening to her "In Concert" album, and bought the Pearl album based on reviews saying this was a more mature style for her music. I like her old style better, this sounds like she was trying to make a more pop sound for her music (although the singing wasn't much different). It not only didn't sound like what you expect from Janice Joplin, it sounded like a muzak imitation of her.
WOW.......2007-01-09
Incredible sound. Vocals cut to the soul and tear at the heart. Way before her time yet pulled along music from the past. Blues, rock and funk all rolled into one. No match living or dead!
Great music .......2005-04-25
Before the album was completed, she died of a drug overdose in 1970 when she was twenty seven. This was her First Number One album. "Get it while you can" is a Beautifull song. Recomended.

(3.5 stars) Disappointing follow up to Ten.......2007-06-19
Now, there are some very good songs on Vs. Plenty, in fact. The folk-rockers Daughter and Elderly Woman etc. are among my favorites, along with straight-up rockers like Go, Rearviewmirror and the politically themed Dissident. Now when I first heard this, it was my favorite PJ record. A second listen, though, reveals a few of its key problems. Animal lifts the riff right from Evenflow; and there's some amateurish screamfests (Rats, Blood, Leash) that are just one headache after another. I don't mind screaming if it's used tastefully, but if it's your entire song... blah. Then there's the issue of the two "extremely liberal" songs, W.M.A and Glorified G. Now, I consider myself a liberal, so I agree with both songs' viewpoints. The problem is that neither of them are any good - the former is just atmospheric blah, the latter is another "ironic" riff-fest. And I can't help but feeling... well, indifferent to the closing Indifference. It just doesn't mean a thing to me.
The "strong half" of this record is strong enough for it to warrant a recommendation. But one thing's for sure: this is NOT Ten.

Outstanding Rock Album.......2007-05-19
It's a toss up for this reviewer which of Pearl Jam's first 2 albums is the better one. Ten and Vs. are different and you can sense that Vs. is a wee bit more commercial but that doesn't stop this from achieving gem status. Packed with hits like Animal, Daughter, Dissident and the like, this is not a good album, it's GREAT. If you are a Pearl Jam fan who caught on later you might be a little surprised because nearly everything they have done since their first 2 albums hasn't been that fabulous, but you owe it to yourself to pick up this gem, crank up those headphones and enjoy early 90s grunge rock like it was meant to be heard!!!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

All I have to say is this:
Just listening to "Go," the first track, gets me so pumped to be listening to Pearl Jam.
You'll be hooked after 1 song, I promise.

This rocks! Its the best. If you like Pearl Jam you either own this or should be ordering it right now. More fluid than Ten and less out there than Vitology or No Code this could, dare I say is there best album. From beginning to end you'll throw your head around and maybe other stuff too.

Genius on a shiny disc.......2007-01-06
There is no way to describe this album simply using words. Its fresh, raw, mature, sparkling, innovative, unique, genious, magic. THAT voice is indescribable. Its a shame that she was taken that soon from the world, too soon. Janis Joplin is a true music legend.
THE LAST TRUE TESTAMENT OF ROCK N' ROLL'S FIRST TRUE QUEEN!.......2006-12-27
I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album simply entitled "PEARL" by Rock's greatest female legend, THE FIRST LADY AND ROCK N' ROLL'S FIRST TRUE QUEEN, THE GREAT JANIS JOPLIN! "PEARL" was originally released in 1971 on vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Columbia Records label. I purchased this album on CD in the Super Bit Mapping (SBM) Master Sound series format and the matrix or ID number is CK 53441. I also purchased the most recent release of this album on a 2-CD set in the Digitally Remastered series in the Legacy Edition. The matrix or ID number is C2K 90282. As always, if I hear any new additonal information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
There have been many great legendary blues women that have passed through music's golden age and history. Women such as Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald are great legends! There were also great female artists that hailed from the mighty Motown and Atlantic Records labels that ruled the soul world with grace and beauty. Artists such as Diana Ross and The Supremes, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas and The Queen of Soul herself, The great Aretha Franklin! But there would be one woman who would hail from Port Arthur, Texas that would seem to bring the Blues home like it was being heard again for the first time. Her voice was so unique and mysterious that you could actually feel her pain and cries when she belted out her songs! She would be the woman that would take all the hard knocks for all the women in music before, during and after! Artists such as the beautiful Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane, the beautiful Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac, the always beautiful Ann & Nancy Wilson from Heart, the beautiful Madonna, the beautiful Melissa Etheridge and the beautiful Sheryl Crow, to name a few, all owe this legendary woman a great deal of debt! When Janis Joplin came on the music scene in 1966-67, there was NO LOOKING BACK! When Janis sang the song "Piece Of My Heart," she truly meant it! When Janis sang "Ball And Chain," she let you know it! Janis didn't know any other way to sing her songs but from her big heart! Janis was so rare in a sense that she really became extremely emotional when she sang her songs. These are some of the reasons why Janis is definitely one of the greatest female performers of all-time! If you don't believe me, just listen to her music! It is there in her music and in her music ONLY, where you will find THE REAL JANIS JOPLIN! "PEARL" is an outstanding album! "PEARL" is also the last true testament of Janis' genius and her strive for perfection in her brilliant music career. All the songs in this album are nothing short of outstanding and brilliant!
I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE (1.) "Move Over," (Outstanding! Brilliant! A GREAT Janis ROCKER! What a great way to begin this legendary album! I love this song so much!) (2.) "Cry Baby," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I love this slow Janis ROCKER! This song is such a grabber due to Janis' emotionally blistering and merciless Lead Vocals! I love this song!) (3.) "A Woman Left Lonely," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I love this Janis number! I love her powerful Lead Vocals in this song!) (4.) "Half Moon," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great Janis ROCKER! This song kicks a*s! I love it dearly!) (5.) "Buried Alive In The Blues," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great ROCKIN' instrumental! This song kicks a*s!) (6.) "My Baby," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great Janis slow BLUES ROCKER! This song kicks a*s! I love the whole musical and Janis' Lead Vocal arrangements in this song!) (7.) "Me And Bobby McGee," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! A great Kris Kristofferson composition! I love this song so dearly! This is by far, the best song on the whole album and there are many great songs on this album! This is Janis at her absolute BEST! The music arrangements are perfect for Janis' blistering Lead Vocals in this one!) (8.) "Mercedes Benz," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is the EMOTIONALLY PAINFUL Janis at her BEST!) (9.) "Trust Me," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! I love this song so very much! This is THE REAL JANIS JOPLIN SINGING IN PAIN THE ONLY WAY SHE KNEW HOW!) (10.) "Get It While You Can," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is another great Janis number! Janis just loves belting out those blistering Lead Vocals in this song! I love it! This song originally concluded the original album release! What a great way to conclude this great legendary album!) BONUS TRACKS (11.) "Happy Birthday, John (Happy Trails)," (This is a song that Janis recorded for John Lennon on his birthday!) (12.) "Me And Bobby McGee," (Demo Version) (13.) "Move Over," (Alternate Version) (14.) "Cry Baby," (Alternate Version) (15.) "My Baby" (Alternate Version) and (16.) "Pearl." (Instumental) DISC TWO This disc contains Janis Joplin's Live from The Festival Express Tour in Canada. This concert was recorded on June 28 to July 4, 1970. This concert performance contains many previously unreleased and unissued songs that have been unavailable for many years until now! Rather than list and briefly review every song track on DISC TWO, I will just say is that this concert is a well performed show by Janis! Janis was definitely having a good time on stage like she usually does at every concert she has ever performed in! Overall, this 2-CD set album is outstanding!
As you can see, this is an album definitely worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable part of his or her personal music collection. This is an album that will definitely be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, Janis Joplin is Rock n' Roll's FIRST TRUE QUEEN! There will NEVER BE ANOTHER JANIS JOPLIN! She LIVED, BREATHED and DIED BY ROCK N' ROLL! If you REALLY want to know how Janis lived, watch the film "THE ROSE" starring Bette Midler! This film was supposedly about the life of Janis Joplin but the Janis Joplin Estate decided that they did not want to authorize this film due to the content and nature of the character being depicted in the film. "THE ROSE" IS JANIS JOPLIN'S LIFE STORY! It is such a tragedy how she died! A WOMAN LEFT SAD AND LONELY INDEED! What a tragic loss for Rock n' Roll! R.I.P. My Sweet Janis Joplin. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JANIS LIVES! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.
Classic enhanced with live versions.......2006-03-12
Nothing has gone stale about Joplin and her band on the all-time classic Pearl. After all these years, it remains a magnificent listening experience because of the quality of the songs, the band's tight playing and the impressive emotional range of Joplin's vocals. The second CD includes some stirring live versions of her greatest songs.
Unlike Cheap Thrills, where there was mostly a cosmic battle between Joplin's voice and Big Brother's heavy metal onslaught, here the voice is the star. My favorites on an album of classics include the poignant Me and Bobby McGee, the tender A Woman Left Lonely, the edgy Half Moon, the emotional Cry Baby, the buoyant Get It While You Can and the plaintive/humorous Mercedes Benz.
Perfect arrangements, brilliant playing and masterly vocalization combine here to create a rock masterpiece. The live album shows the extraordinary power of Joplin on stage. This CD is essential for all rock fans, providing the very best of 1960s rock.

Charleston on the Thames.......2007-03-24
This Flapper title reminds us that they "Black Bottomed" and "Charlestoned" in merrie olde England too, back in the '20s. Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence stirred up plenty of musical magic on their side of the pond, where the gin was legal.
There are plenty of American selections on this CD as well, including some wonderful numbers by Waring's Pennsylvanians ("Ice Cream") and Paul Whiteman's Orchestra ("Nobody's Sweetheart"), and a terrific rendition of "Broadway Melody" with Charles King doing the vocal and the legendary Roy Shields conducting the orchestra. This compensates for Annette Hanshaw's dull rendition of "Button Up Your Overcoat" (leave Helen Kane's stuff to Helen Kane!) and the poorly arranged rendition of "Charleston" that opens this collection.
Overall, this is an interesting collection of well-known and lesser-known recordings of '20s standards, with enough good content to offset the mediocre.
Takes You Back in Time.......2007-02-25
One thing I really like about this collection is that it that while it contains a number of "standard" selections from the 20's that have been done many times by many artists, it also contains a lot of selections that you just don't hear that often. In fact some of them are probably next to impossible to find any other place. Considering that most of these recordings were made more than half a century ago, the quality is outstanding. Sometimes old recordings are full of hiss and static and scratchy sounding, but these have been restored to near perfect condition. For old recordings, these are as good as it gets with almost no background noise. The only thing that gives away the age of these records is that some selections do tend to sound slightly flat, probably because they were taken from original monophonic sources and possibly in part due to the noise reduction process. It doesn't detract in the least from the recordings. Of course you can find some more modern groups that have re-recorded some of these songs in full, rich stereo, but they really don't sound that much better and sometimes not as good. The original artists often did the best renditions. If you really want to hear what the 20's sounded like musically, this is the album for you. You won't find a better 20's collection.
Do, Do, Do Buy this CD.......2007-02-10
A great collection of songs. It starts off strong and keeps going. There are a few weak ones but don't let that hold you back just skip over them. Grab the flask, put on your raccoon coat and have some fun.
Late '20s dance music.......2007-01-15
The very first selection on THE ROARING 'TWENTIES is one of the earliest electrical recordings in existence. "Charleston," by the Savoy Orpheans, recorded in 1925, is an ideal way to begin this musical journey back to the carefree days of that unique decade. What follows is a solid set of tunes, many of which got plenty of exposure on early radio.
Two pages of liner notes are included, as well as such details as recording dates and running times. Top rating for album content, source condition and reproduction quality. THE ROARING 'TWENTIES is a terrific collection of late 1920s popular music.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 73:12
Excellent compilation and restoration.......2004-07-10
I have been searching for the recording of Charles King singing, "Broadway melody" for years. Here it is - in an excellent restoration - with just the slightest (and soon unnoticed) hint of surface hiss. What a great performance. Gene Kelly imitated King's phrasing and style when he did the same number in "Singing in the rain." King introduced the song in, "Broadway Melody of 1929." He was a talented Broadway singer who hoped to follow Al Jolson's success in Hollywood. He was memorable in the movie but soon returned to Broadway, found plenty of work, and was eventually forgotten.
There are lots of great numbers here. Hooray to Pearl for bringing this one out.
