The Last Waltz [Box set]

Even taking into account inflation, it's ironic in this era of $250 concert tickets that critics harped when the Band charged $25 for their legendary November 1976 farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland. That price not only included Thanksgiving dinner, but also numerous guest superstars who'd influenced, worked with, and/or shared the Canadian roots of Robbie Robertson and crew. What transpired was a grand celebration of North American musical forms. There are numerous definitive performances here--from Van Morrison's goose-bump-inducing "Caravan" and solo rendition of the beautiful Irish standard "Tura Lura Lural" (Celtic music inspired those Appalachians in the first place) to Bob Dylan and "the Hawks" delivering a pop-metallic "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down," first captured on the Royal Albert Hall Concert tapes. But because this new fleshed-out version--produced and compiled by Robertson--includes surprises (late blues legend Muddy Waters's endearing take on Louis Jordan's "Caledonia"; current blues legend Dylan's "Hazel"), treasures ("This Wheels on Fire," Neil Young's "Four Strong Winds"), and two jam sessions that just don't add much, the new box set simply matches and enhances--but doesn't top--the original three-LP version of this wonderful slice of rock & roll history. --Bill Holdship

"The Weight" is over, this is the version to buy!.......2007-06-03
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write reviews and or speak about the music from the 60's and 70's.
"The Last Waltz" is more than a live record. It is a reminder of one of the finest (Although saddest) evenings in rock history. Robbie Robertson and the guys would no longer be found on the road. If they had to say goodbye lucky for us they would touch the earth when numerous friends helped to solidify the event as a tribute to great musicians and songwriters.
If you want to experience the mark "The Band" left in the musical universe look at the cast of characters that would share the stage during the epic event. They came from the blues world- Ronnie Hawkins and Muddy Waters, the blues-rock of Eric Clapton and Paul Butterfield were proud to be in the roll call, from the folk side long time friend Bob Dylan seemed so right playing with Robbie and the gang. There was Neil Diamond and many eyes wondered why, it is called mutual respect. Ask how "The Band" and Neil felt about each others ability. There was a guy named Ringo from Liverpool, he knew something about greatness and Neil Young perfect for the energy he brought and sincere appreciation for the sound of "The Band." Obviously I am leaving out a host of cohorts, only because of lack of room.
With the extraordinary bonus material this can't escape any fan of "The Band." If you heard it previously, it will be a new experience. If this is your first time hold on for the ride of your life.
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Further On Up The Road", and "I Shall Be Released" are three of the many staples of this collection. You will be so engrossed with the playing and the song selection be prepared to miss a meal or two and not be on time to the next office meeting.
I was in Louisville, Kentucky not long ago for a lecture with Tom Constanten from the Grateful Dead, and the amazing rock photographer Don Aters. One of the fine local musicians Brigid Kaelin told me once a year an event is booked somewhere in Kentucky where the music of "The Last Waltz" is recreated. When we talk timeless and ceaseless it is not a cliché it is a rock and roll reality.
Let's go back in time and marvel at the sounds of the various men and women that made the rock nothing short of a diamond.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Review of the Last Waltz.......2007-05-13
I actually thought I purchased the DVD "The Last Waltz", but of course when it arrived, it was the CD. I'm enjoying the music in my car and I'll look for the DVD (if available) the next time I order.
Love the music.
Great Gift Idea.......2007-04-02
This CD is so great because of all the additional tracks that were previously unreleased. There are also lots of photos and stories behind the concert/film that are very interesting. I Highly recommend.
The only way to experience The Last Waltz on CD.......2007-01-12
The Last Waltz is a controversial beast. As a rock documentary, it's an absolute classic, bringing to life the interviews of a diverse lineup of rock stars and depicting a marvelous one-night-stand concert in a very exciting way. As an event for The Band, it was a bit of an act--Robertson was the only one who wanted to quit, and the performance was especially forced for drummer Levon Helm, who didn't like the entire concept and found the film to be especially biased to Robertson's ego. For better or worse, though, here it is on CD in as complete a form as has ever been released (a few tracks are still missing and horns are overdubbed on a few as well, and the tracks aren't in their original order). The group is certainly not as on top of their game as they once were, since the road and drugs have taken their toll, but they give it their all and the star-studded guest appearances make for a once-in-a-lifetime event. This boxed set is the only way to experience this concert--it has the music that wasn't in the movie, it has the studio theatrical music, and it has the rehearsals that were (in some cases) better than the actual performances.
When the concert is good, it's great. Van Morrison's "Caravan" is a transcendent rock and roll moment, and The Band really cuts it up on some of their own material, like Rick Danko's classic "Stage Fright" vocal and The Band's final, barnstorming encore, "Don't Do It." A lot of great songs are on here that didn't make it to the movie either, like the group affair "Acadian Driftwood" with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young's "Helpless," which sounds great with The Band's vocalists as backup singers. The rehearsals are great too, with "King Harvest" as a highlight (I still don't know why they're withholding the actual live version of this classic).
When The Last Waltz is mediocre, though, it's pretty mediocre. For instance, "Out of the Blue." With three amazing vocalists, Robbie Robertson's egotistical advancement of his own middling voice is pretty disappointing. A few of the takes are pretty middle of the road too, like the live "The Weight," and the rushed "W.S. Walcott's Medicine Show." Neil Diamond, though he performs his song with his usual grace (I admit it, I'm a fan) doesn't really belong with The Band on such an important night. Sorry Robbie.
Overall, The Last Waltz is a solid experience on CD, but it's definitely overshadowed by the truly essential film version of the concert which has great visuals and interview footage (not to mention a lot of close-ups of Robbie, thanks to Marty's infatuation with the guitarist). As a CD it doesn't capture the visual scope of the night and can't compare to the performing quality of Rock of Ages, the group's first and superior live album. If you're going to buy The Last Waltz on CD, though, this one has the most music and captures ALL of the best moments, where the other versions are even more heavily-edited and miss out on some of the greatness.

A Musical Artifact.......2007-07-15
Alright first things first I agree Neil Diamond is not a worthy addition among this line up of musical gods. Thank god for the skip button. Ok the review. Album? Concert? Musical artifact take your pick. What ever it is ,its brilliant. A farewell party for the retiring former backing band for Dylan humbly named The Band. The line up, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison all legends, all on fire. I mean seriously every performance is gold, heart felt and full of energy. Unlike most "all star" concerts it seems they all wanted to be there. To single one artist out as a stand out would be impossible. Then there's the hosts of the party The Band. Every song from this concert has become the definitive version for The Band. The Weight has to be one of greatest recordings of any song ever. Ok I could rave on about the artists performances for ever, trust me their amazing. Which brings me to the most important element regarding this recording which is exactly that, the recording. There cant be a better live recording of a concert from this period, you simply cant top perfect. Add the digital remaster and your in the front row. (the DVD sound and picture recording is perfect also, highly recommended). So if you've been living under a rock or are under the age of 30 and dont own it already, buy this album and the DVD. A true musical artifact from this period.
Oh, to have been there!.......2007-07-08
Turkey dinner and some of the greatest musicians of our time? Sign me up! This album/DVD is really really really good. I liked some of the band's stuff before, and I liked Dylan and Van Morrison, but this blew me away! This album would be good for people just getting into good music; it's kind of a "greatest hits" of Rock-n-roll history. This album got me into Dr. John and The Staple Singers, And my favorite tracks are probably Van Morrison doing Caravan, Dr, John's such a Night, And Ophelia. I would also recommend watching the DVD first, it makes the context of the cd fresher and better (I love seeing how over the top Dr. John was, And when Van the Man walks off the stage before Caravan is over. Clapton and Muddy Waters were really entertaining to watch too.)
Get this album! or I guess the box set, I hear this is harder to find now.
A true classic.......2007-01-06
For those of us who remember the 60's, this band will live forever!
What the...?.......2006-12-27
I'll start off with my review as so-so, There are some performers *cough*NeilDiamond*cough* that shouldnt have shown up but all-in-all, its an OK album.
It's nice to have a CD of the Concert with "most" of the songs at the concert in it, but What the heck happened to the Bass Guitar Channel? Its Missing! It's soo much more dramatic and exciting with the Bass than w/o the Bass.
Not the discs, but the cassettes.......2004-04-01
I don't have this CD set, but i have the cassettes of the original release, and they are played so often that i might have to actually buy the discs.
Enough has been written about the event itself. Many people are critical of the concept of "farewell concerts," of a group of musicians getting "tired" of touring -- when that is their whole point of existence. Others are critical of the actual music itself, saying that the performance was luke-warm or even sloppy. If one can get past these criticisms, they might just enjoy something special.
I caught a showing of the film on TV in the Mid-90's and was hooked. Not only did the concert make me a fan of The Band, but also of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and Paul Butterfield. I may have been aware of most of the artists (who *hadn't* heard of Clapton by 1979 or later?), but had not really given their work much thought. Admittedly, i am STILL not a fan of Neil Diamond's, but his inclusion in the show was welcomed and stirring, and displays the talent of the Band as well as their appreciation for the music of others. They are real musicians; i am not. Each guest star came to the stage with a composition of their own - the Band took it, made it better without upstaging the artist, and turned it into a great live performance.
You can disagree with the motivation behind the show, or allude to its artificiality, but you can't argue with serendipity. This event was an important moment in 20th-Century music. Some of the best examples of recorded-live music are here, especially Van Morrison's Caravan, Joni Mitchell's Coyote, and the Band's own Up on Cripple Creek. Good stuff.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

On this second album by Megan Hickey's band, her nine originals are joined by a spare and emotive reworking of David Bowie's "Modern Love." It is built around her breathy but resonant vocals and her lap steel guitar, the minimal accompaniment (drums, bass, violin, guitar) judiciously utilized for an overall sound that feels old but sounds new. Her lap steel playing truly lends this release its most identifiable and idiosyncratic element. Hickey is capable of slashing density (as on "Caroline"), high and lonesome melodicism ("Boat"), and atmospheric sweeps ("Foreign Land"), but often moving from one approach to another within a given song, seamlessly altering or embellishing moods. She has also come up with songs that have a life of their own. One can imagine songs like "Wintering in Brooklyn" and "It's Not Over" being played by others. Self-produced and recorded, Megan Hickey has a fully formed sense of purpose and a willingness to push herself, not only making this album a powerful work, but raising expectations for anything she decides to do next. --David Greenberger
Album Description
The distorted cry of a lap-steel guitar slices through the Brooklyn night. A voice sings with aching sweetness and strength. Caressing melodies are barbed with stinging solors. This is the sound of The Last Town Chorus--the revolving ensemble led by singer/writer/lap-steel-guitarist Megan Hickey.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasing, but lacks emotional range.......2007-05-18
I find this CD a fresh musical wave in a sea of mind-numbing pop. Like others here I bought this because I heard their cover of "Modern Love" and was wowed. Indeed, the vocals and haunting instrumentation on many of these songs are a winning combination. Overall, it's a pleasant CD that works well as background or for quieter moments when you can focus more on the subtle complexities. However, I find that the lead singer's vocals don't change; her emotional expression is static. Quite like Margo Timmins in Cowboy Junkies -- after a while I want to switch to another CD. I admit I am drawn to vocals and I value singers, like Rufus Wainwright, who convey their interpretation of a song via a wider range.
A Must Have.......2007-05-12
Megan Hickey is one of the most talented musician/poets to come along in a generation. She combines the soul of Nina Simone, the cool of June Christy, the feel for quotidian beauty of Laurie Anderson, with a skill for the lap steel guitar to rival Roy Clark. The lyrical, soothing moments leave you wonderfully unprepared for suprising innovations of tone and technique. This is an album that anyone who appreciates what music and words can do together should own and cherish.
1-2-3 1-2-3.......2007-05-04
Wire Waltz is a lovely album. It is very mellow, languid, and atmospheric. It takes its time as it reels you in with a lap steel as the main instrument and the sweet, soft, dreamy vocals. Singer, song-writer and lap steel player, Megan Hickey's voice is not unlike Cat Power, Tiffany Anders or Mazzy Star. I bought the cd after hearing the superior, slowed-down version of David Bowie's "Modern Love" (again similar to Cat Power's superior slowed-down version of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"). Lyrically smart, "Huntsville, 1989" hits home with lyrics about falling asleep listening to the Smiths, carrying Oscar Wilde books to school and picking friends because they wore the same boots. It was hard to find others like yourself back in 1989 whether in Huntsville, Alabama or in South Western Pennsylvania (which she also mentions in this song). I believe this is the second album by this band, although The Last Town Chorus is basically Megan Hickey's gig. I hope this is the beginning of a long future in song writing and wish her all the best. Her voice takes me places. I am not sure where yet, but away from SW PA at any rate, and that is something for which to be thankful.
I Love this record!.......2007-04-10
Megan Hickey will woo you with her voice and rock you with her guitar! While I love the cover of Modern Love - in which Hickey makes the song her own, It's Not Over, Caroline, Wintering In Brooklyn - are haunting and lovely and sad. This record is like fine Scotch - take your time with it - don't gulp, sip!
Now I want a lap-steel guitar too!.......2007-03-27
This album was not what I expected at all when I first listened, but I really wasn't sure what a lap-steel guitar sounded like, and I certainly didn't know what it could do! Wire Waltz is an album of contrasts and juxtapositions. Hickey sounds like she's having lots of fun, but in a fierce, controlled way. The voice tracks are often slow, minimal, and full of sad, ponderous echos, which are then delicately laid over rebellious, twanging, unpretentious guitar that at any moment can run off into a lively rock-ballad style riff. All of the songs are deliberate, and the band has a clear, defined sound that's like some combination of Patti Griffen and Mazzy Star.
It's an album for listening to (a bunch of times) when you want to feel nostalgic and older, and better for it. Favorite tracks are her David Bowie cover, 'Wire Waltz,' 'I Want You,' and 'Huntsville.'

Customer Reviews:
Would you like ketchup with your bug?.......2007-05-05
The person who sang O Mio Babbino Caro is Carmen Monarcha. Do a search for her on YouTube; she's really fantastic!
Anyway, I saw Andre Rieu on a PBS special on television and it looked like such an awesome, high-energy concert! The CD is not so exciting, but it is worth buying just for that beautiful aria.
he makes you get up and dance.......2007-04-10
my 3 yr old enjoys this as much as us
Live in Dublin.......2007-02-17
The music is really toe tapping and excellent. Andre Rieu is a master of music.
Live in Dublin.......2006-07-05
This concert is magnificent in its energy and in the great performances by Andre Rieu and the Johann Stauss orchestra. I watch it when I need lifting up. I love the audience interaction which makes me feel as if I'm there in person.
Live audience is great........2006-05-03
This has to be one of Andre's best. The live audience adds much to the music being played. I wish I had been there for the performance.

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

"As you might have heard, we got a couple of friends joining in with us tonight," mutters Robbie Robertson dryly. Recorded at San Francisco's Winterland on Thanksgiving Day 1976, the Band's swan song is a rousing celebration, not a bittersweet eulogy. The friends in question: Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr. Add studio sequences featuring the Staples and Emmylou Harris, and you have a pretty formidable supporting cast for the Band, who always did quite well on their own. All involved have done better work elsewhere, but that's far beside the point, which is that anyone who wasn't there should be very, very jealous. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Rock 'n' Roll Heaven.......2007-05-06
Quite simply The Band were one of the greatest Rock N Roll bands ever. This is a recording of their farewell concert in 1976 (at least in the classic line-up with Robbie Robertson on guitar). The Bands music on its own would merit purchase of this disc. They run through a 'best of' set, that as a concert would be hard to beat.
Add to this the guest list, and you have one of the best rock concerts of all time. Van Morrison in his hey day belting out 'Caravan'. Joni Mitchell singing 'Coyote'. Dylan with Robbie Robertson burning incendiary guitar licks behind him. Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Dr John, Eric Clapton... The list goes on and on.
A few extra numbers were recorded after the concert and these are included on the CD as well. The best of which is a magnificent version of 'The Weight' featuring The Staples singers. If you haven't heard Mavis Staples, and you like gospel influenced music this takes what was already a great song to a new level.
The same year this was recorded Punk came on the scene and changed music for ever. But it doesn't matter whether you were brought up on Elvis Presley, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana or Coldplay, this music is as essential now as it was 31 years ago.
Last Waltz.......2006-03-15
I loved the movie, The Last Waltz, and had to get the CD that goes with it. Of course, it's wonderful, just like the movie! So much talent in one place! I skated through the 70s listening to other types of music, so I missed out on a lot of what was going on with these artists. But it's never too late, in my opinion. I'm very happy to have this historic concert in my collection!
The Last Waltz.......2005-12-06
This is the Holy Grail of North American music. Definitely in my top 5 albums of all time. To give you some idea: Eric Clapton (yes he's British, but he was living in America and playing in an American band at the time) and Bob Dylan both show up--and, what are the odds, each one plays the BEST live set of their lives. Not to mention about a dozen essential songs by lesser-known artists like Dr. John and Paul Butterfield, and The Band doing their own songs in live versions that range from "good" to "inspired." Tacked onto the end of the concert are three new studio songs by The Band--in my opinion, all three rank among the best The Band ever did. I will gripe a little bit, that "Baby Don't Do It," one of the best songs on the DVD version of The Last Waltz, was not included. There seems to be no excuse for this. That said, one really can't complain about a CD's potential to have been better when it is already one of the greatest ever made. 5 stars aren't enough.
The Musicality of the Band.......2004-03-23
Great musicianship from the mainstay of the evening, with guest appearances from a host of the "old school" (rock?)stars during that period in American music (it feels odd referring to that period in a past tense, but it is almost 2 generations ago). The Band couldn't have been rock. Progressive, Alternative... it must drive the critics and catagorizers looney. How about great music from North America. Together this group had a fullness and richness to their sound that others in the field could only envy. I recall that Clapton was reported to have left Cream and wanted to start up a group along the lines of the Band. Clapton gets part of his wish and is invited to join in the festivities of the Last Waltz. Can you imagine being there at this event? It would have been a phenominal experience. This release documents this historic occasion with an evening of stellar performances by all guests. A beautiful release.
Why do the best things always disappear?.......2004-01-28
Like THE LAST WALTZ! The Band succeeded in pulling off not only the greatest live performance of all time, but also proceeded to play songs of their own that actually outdid their original studio performances! Wow! Wait until you get this CD around your ears through your headphones! Listen closely to rocked-up versions of "Stagefright", "Up on Cripple Creek" (could that be played any heavier?), "It Makes No Difference", and "Mystery Train" (they drive old Dixie down pretty good, too). Robertson is the best guitarist ever (yes, I'm remembering Pete Ham and Eric Clapton). Simply unbeatable, because you'll be helpless without this package! Great music-where have you gone?
