The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle

If Springsteen's debut, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. revealed just how ambitious a talent he was, it also fell just short of realizing those ambitions. No such problem with this, his second album. The Dylanesque wordplay is there, but with more narrative detail, as on "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)," "Kitty's Back," and "Rosalita," each of which became instant Springsteen classics and were demanded by his concert crowds for years. But even on this record, the music isn't allowed to take a back seat to the words--the latter two, at least, are full-tilt rock & roll numbers, with abrupt tempo shifts, soaring instrumental parts, and production that's just chaotic enough to make you wonder if the whole thing is going to blow apart and then smile in appreciation when it doesn't. The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle was the first time Springsteen scaled the heights of rock & roll greatness--but it wouldn't be the last. --Daniel Durchholz

Summer 0f 73.......2007-07-14
This is a wonderful album, lots of energy, great songs and performances, before Bruce became famous. I wish this album, as well as Springsteen's entire back catlog, would get a sonic upgrade for CD. Long overdue.
The most interesting of all Springsteen recordings- thanks to "Mad Dog"!.......2007-06-16
Springsteen's second album is a collective of many styles that eventually coalesces into a completely unique musical form. No band has sounded the same as Bruce and co. back in '73. Now, we've all heard the accusation (thanks Dave Marsh!) about how this recording, as well as the first, was supposedly damaged by the "hamfisted" drumming of Vini Lopez. This needs to be addressed. I've been a drummer for 23 years and I can tell every drummer out there to TRY, just TRY to duplicate the energetic twists and turns of Lopez's drumming on this recording (particularly "Kitty's Back" and "Rosalita")!! The dynamism of his playing compliments the variation and shifting nature of the music perfectly.
For me, it's exactly the explosive energy of Lopez that gives this, as well as the first album, a manic intensity that was lost when Bruce decided to oust Lopez for whatever reasons that remain cloudy to this day. Don't listen to the naysayers who haven't a clue how play drums in the first place, just listen to this recording and enjoy excellent songs, great production and most of all BRILLIANT drumming from "Mad Dog" Lopez!
Early Boss Still Ranks with the Best.......2007-02-18
Before Bruce Springsteen crashed onto the national scene (cover of Time and Newsweek in the same week), he had played with local bands for several years in his native New Jersey and had released two albums, "Greetings from Asbury Park" in 1972 and this album one year later. We wore the grooves off both at the University of Delaware from 1972-1976. More than 30 years later, "The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" remains one of my all-time favorite albums.
"E Street" is an infectious blend of rock, blues, and jazz, in fact more jazz than would appear on the rest of his albums put together, as producer Jon Landau, who took over with "Born to Run", and Bruce himself would adopt a tighter, more structured style.
For me, "E Street" contains three great songs--the plaintive "Sandy" ("Sandy, that waitress I've been seeing lost her desire for me"), the evocative, Romeo and Juliet-tinged "Incident on 57th Street" (always "Spanish Johnny" to me--"good night, it's all right Jane"), and the anthemic "Rosalita" ("my machine she's a dud, I'm stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey"), the song I'd ask to hear if I could hear just one more rock song before I go. The piano segue between these last two is a musical thing of beauty.
"Wild Billy's Circus Story" (with the unexpected appearance of a tuba) and "Listen to Your Junkman" (which I'm sure goes by another title, but that's how I remember it, having listened many more times than I've read the liner notes) are also outstanding, but grow on the listener moreso than blowing his or her doors off the first time. The "title" track "E Street Shuffle" introduces the show in a rush.
Springsteen fans who discovered him in the mid-80s with "Born in the USA" should definitely treat themselves to this early masterpiece.
great album, absorbing stories.......2007-01-21
This is my favorite Springsteen album and one of my top 10 faves of all time. The songs that rock are unmatched and the slow tunes evoke incredible emotion. Rosalita has closed a majority of Springsteen's concerts over the years for good reason. Kitty's Back and Rosalita were written for the purpose of leaving the audience and the band totally exausted. The title track sways and bops. Others move you and sink you deep into the lives of characters that existed in Springsteen's imagination. I understand how many view Born to Run as one of the best albums of all time. These two should be viewed as discs one and two of a double album that celebrates the Jersey shore and stand apart as unique rock n roll. On this album, Springsteen is not doing his best to be successful, but pouring his heart out to rock the world. Buy this album and you will come back to it over and over for many years.
Almost.......2006-08-07
I have a kind of love-hate relationship with Springsteen. I LOVE his earlier stuff, but I'm not so keen on his more recent material. I LOVE his concerts when he's got the E Street Band with him, but I don't really care for his solo shows.
As for this album, I almost love it. I definitely like and recommend it.
My problem is that it's successor, "Born to Run," is, in my opinion, the greatest rock album of all time. It represents greatness, and was Springsteen's pinnacle album. "The Wild..." also is a fantastic, solid album, but it falls just short of that greatness for me.
Having said that, I often find myself listening to these two albums together because you can hear the beginnings of the masterful songwriting and musical composition that elevates "Born to Run" to legendary status. For example, the musical playfulness that makes "10th Avenue Freeze Out" such a timeless song seems to have grown its roots on this album's "Rosalita."
"The Wild..." is the perfect preamble to "Born to Run:" enjoyable and solid in its own right, and a teasing taste of what's to come.

Well Crafted.......2007-03-22
Perhaps a little more commercial and varied, this is another very well crafted album by UFO. According to Phil Mogg the band were given carte blanche by Chrysalis to do what they wanted. The time spent at Air studios certainly paid off with more emphasis on the song writing and lyrical skills of Mogg to make up for the absence of Schenker's ripping guitar work. Neil Carter slides in unnoticed as a replacement for Raymond and the whole album came out smelling of roses. Unfortunately things started to slide after this particularly when Pete Way left and the Mogg/Way song writing partnership was broken. Best offerings here are "Makin' Moves", a top notch rocker and "Profession of Violence" where Chapman again features. I still prefer the earlier Schenker works to this but it should not be ignored as a fine album. All the songs are good and still distinctive UFO despite the line up changes and orchestrations. Not sure about the Top of The Pops appearance on TV in England where they looked well out of place playing "Lonely Heart" (they just never have managed to crack the singles market with a big commercial hit). Like No Place to Run, this is rare and expensive. If you can't get a copy the BGO Records double CD TWTWATI with Mechanix is better value.
One of UFO's best..........2006-07-05
I'm writing this because as I replace a number of CD's that were stolen - I'm surprised at some things I read. First off, let me say that I had EVERY UFO album(that's vinyl, folks) thru Misdemeanor when we moved to cassettes. I've been a huge fan for a LONG time. That being said, I'm a Schenker fan - however, he was/is NOT the most important part of UFO. Phil Mogg and Pete Way have always been principal songwriters along with whichever guitarist happened to be playing at the time. The strongest UFO albums have always come when both Mogg and Way were present.
On to the album. The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent is the best of the Paul Chapman era, and top 5 UFO - all time(Strangers, Obsession, Force It and Walk On Water). Chains Chains, TWTW&TI, Lonley Heart and Profession Of Violence are some of the best songs in UFO's immense catalog. There actually isn't a bad song on the album. The playing is excellent - Paul Chapman isn't Schenker, he doesn't have to be. His playing is very strong - maybe just not as explosive as Schenker. The only downside to this album is it only has 8 tracks - 9 with the live version of Hot 'n' Ready. This is an album that you listen to all the way through. Also worth checking out are: No Place To Run, Making Contact and the Mogg/Way albums Chocalate Box and Edge Of The World.
So in closing, if you are a UFO fan - BUY THIS ALBUM! UFO has been making great music for a long time, both with and without Michael Schenker. Don't let the "Schenkerphiles" stop you from checking out the rest of the work.
MAGICAL!.......2006-03-16
I first heard this album when it came out in 1981. Put aside to be forgotten. However, I was fortunate enough to spot it on Amazon and decided to pick it up. Eureka! I discovered where those magical sounds in my subconscious were coming from. It seems as though this album got into my head and never left. I totally forgot what a great piece of work it was. Absolutely Paul Chapman's best! He lets loose on some wonderful guitar riffs and is accompanied by the old stand-bys Mogg, Parker, and Way. Be careful though, I have awakened many mornings recently with songs from the Wild Willing and the Innocent running through my head like some mystical Trance! IT WILL REALLY GROW ON YOU!
The Best of the Chapman era, nearly the best of them all.......2005-05-14
The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent marks the high water mark of the Paul Chapman era. Unlike many UFO fans, I am not partial to Schenker, and feel that the albums featuring Chapman have every bit as much to offer. The albums that make up 1980-83 era UFO are not as varied and textured as say Force It or Lights Out, rather they are focused on more straight ahead chugging riff rockers. That said, TWTWTI is the most textured of the Chapman releases.
None of the songs are filler here, and I rarely use the "skip" button when playing it. I can't say the same for most of the discs in my collection. Personal favorites would have to be "Long Gone" featuring a moody, cool string section at the end, the chugging forceful riff of the title track and "Makin' Moves" and the balladic non-ballad "Lonely Heart."
The main attribute that has always set UFO apart from the pack and continues to make them great here is the sense of atmosphere that is created in each song. They know how to paint a vivid story with words and music, and it's always a unique experience if not always successful. If you're interested in checking out any UFO albums outside of the Schenker era, the one to begin with is right here!
4.5 stars - A severely underrated UFO release.......2005-05-13
The Wild, The Willing, And The Innocent (1981.) UFO's ninth album.
Following the release of UFO's finest release, the 1978 live album Strangers In The Night, the group lost lead guitarist Michael Schenker, who went onto form his own group. To replace the recently-departed virtuoso, the group recruited Paul Chapman. The group's first effort with Chapman, 1980's No Place To Run, was an excellent album - so excellent, it was even comparable to the Schenker albums! Unfortunately, many UFO fans were Schenker loyalists, and so they didn't give the new release/gutarist a chance. Because of this whole "Schenker loyalist" things, it seems like only a few UFO fans give the rest of the band's catalogue a fair shake. How does Chapman's second release with UFO, 1981's The Wild, The Willing, And The Innocent, measure up? Read on for my review.
The story here is the same story as with No Place To Run - we have a damn good album (one that is comparable with even the Schenker albums), but not enough people give it a chance just because it doesn't have Schenker on it. I'm so damn sick of these Schenker fans who just go and diss all the releases that don't have him - There was life AFTER him in UFO! And this is one of the group's best, not to mention most underrated releases. The album is widely varied, and Paul Chapman proves himself to be one hell of a guitarist through and through (the band wouldn't have recruited him if they didn't think he was good!) There is no shortage of excellent songs on this album. The opener, Chains Chains, is classic hard rock the way it was meant to be enjoyed, and it makes for a great opening track. The title track is also great, featuring Chapman serving up some of his finest riffs. My favorite track on the album would have to be It's Killing Me, a classic bluesy power rocker that is distinctly British rock. The song is actually reminiscent of Rainbow's Stone Cold, and that's a good thing. Also excellent is the band's proto-power ballad, Lonely Heart. Long before power ballads became cheesy and overdone to death later in the eighties, UFO managed to create tracks that were half rocker and half ballad - and all excellent. Couldn't Get It Right is one of the pop-oriented hard rockers, which actually brings back memories of some of the lighter tunes from the Schenker era, making it one of my favorites here. Closing out the tune is the softest ballad of all, Profession Of Violence. This ballad combines piano usage with orchestral backing arrangements. About halfway through, Chapman and the rest of the band join in, adding that signature classic UFO sound to the ballad, making it a damn good closing track, and a great way to go out. In the end, this stands as one of my favorite UFO albums.
Sadly, UFO's albums are NOT readily available in America. This blows, since so many of them are so good! If you want them, more likely than not, it's gonna take some heavy searching, or a visit to an online store. There are three main versions of this and most UFO albums available - The version with a bonus track, the British twofer, or the Russian twofer. The British twofer is my first choice for which version you should buy and the Russian second, but if you can't find either, there's no harm in getting the onefer with the lone bonus tracks. Either way, the album itself is still excellent.
In the end, this stands as one of UFO's best and most underrated albums. It's really a shame the way Schenker loyalists put down the non-Schenker albums, since they're, in many cases, just as good and sometimes better than those old glory days of the band. If you're new to the band, though, start with the Schenker albums. Although the Chapman albums are often as good and sometimes better, they are a bit more of an aquired taste than the Schenker ones, which any hard rock fan can get into almost instantly. If you're a tried and true UFO fan, though, go for the Chapman stuff - and don't overlook this album.

Triple Shot Of Bruce Juice.......2004-11-20
Greetings From Asbury Park served notice that there was a new musical force on the scene. On his debut, Bruce showed he was the best songwriter to come along since Bob Dylan. The album kicks off with the musical tongue twister "Blinded By The Light" that showed Bruce wasn't a typical singer-songwriter. The song has a funky riff and is replete with horns. "Spirit In The Night" introduced the E Street sound and is a precursor to the character oriented songs that would appear later on Born To Run & Wild. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?" is fun and "For You" is a rare rock song about suicide. "Growin' Up" & It's So Hard To Be A Saint In The City" show early signs of Bruce's "Tramp" persona. "Lost In The Flood" is the great forgotten Bruce song and is as good a song as he has ever recorded. While Greetings is uneven at points ("Mary, Queen of Arkansas' & "The Angel"), it shows an artist who had a very original sound and huge potential. It is great to throw it in the CD player and hear a young, raw and hungry Bruce Springsteen and listen to where it all started.
The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street shuffle may only contain 7 songs, but they pack a punch and are among the finest of Bruce's career. The album opens with the funky guitar riff of "The E Street Shuffle". "4th Of July" is the song that made Asbury Park famous and Madame Marie's a mecca for Bruce fans. "Kitty's Back" is a blazing rock 'n' soul workout and is followed by the comical "Wild Billy's Circus Story". On the original album, the last three songs constituted side two and it is about as perfect of an album side as there is in history. "Incident on 57th Street", "Rosalita" and "New York City Serenade" is a three part musical suite and they flow seamlessly into one another. The stories they tell are so vivid that they are almost like musical literature. Bruce has released albums that were musically superior to Wild, but never one that was this much fun.
In Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Springsteen's characters are no longer looking to escape their problems, they've giving up escape a long time ago. They are searching for answers to the situations they find themselves in. Optimism has been replaced by despair and cynicism. "Badlands" is an angry anthem about never being satisfied with where you are in life. "Adam Raised A Cain" is about the struggles between a father and his angry son and "Factory" is about the drudgery of everyday life. Songs like "Something In The Night", "The Promised Land" and "Racing In The Streets" are about chasing a dream that one will probably never find. "Candy's Room", "Streets Of Fire" & "Prove It All Night" are about putting everything on the line for someone and having to constantly prove their devotion. The title song best sums up the album. People are looking for answers to the same questions, willing to pay the cost, but never find them. No matter how much time they search into the Darkness On The Edge Of Town, they end up in the same place.
3 Bangs: Less Than 30 Measley Bucks ?!.......2003-08-12
If I didn't have all three of these albums in my collection, I'd jump on this deal. 3 early Bruce albums for ...? Each disc buries every post-"River" album (with the exception of "Nebraska") by a long shot. Of the 3, "Wild & Innocent" is the least accessible, and even it boasts 'Rosalita', '4th of July'(better known as 'Sandy'), and the weighty 'New York City Serenade'. The poetry on "Greetings" is weird, and playful, and fun as hell: "Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleading immaculate conception...?" And "Darkness"? Well, it's just a rock-solid album, pun intended. These albums are must-haves for anyone who knew and loved Bruce before the "Born in the USA" debacle.
Holy smokes! 3 of Springsteen's records at once!.......2002-04-03
In my humble opinion, 'The Wild, the Innocent, & the E st. Shuffle' remains one of Bruce's best albums. Taking a lot of inspiration from Van Morrison's 'Astrel Weeks,' Springsteen made a funky record that plays like cinema. Sort of a Scorsese-meets-Fellini epic. This was the record that had the East Coast rock community waiting in anticipation for what turned out to be 'Born to Run.' (hence the simultanious Time & Newsweek cover stories)
'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' of course, is loaded with Springsteen classics that he still plays live today - Badlands, Promised Land, Prove it All Night etc...

Among other things, Henry VIII appears to have been responsible for bringing the violin to England. The original group of Jewish-Italian string players who came to work for Henry started a musical institution that continued as part of the royal household until it was disbanded in the 1920s. The music featured here represents "the sort of music the violin consort would have played during Queen Elizabeth's reign." Not surprisingly, many of the pieces are dances; others are consort pieces; still others are arrangements of popular songs of the day. The seven members of the Parley of Instruments--which in this case includes violins, violas, bass violin, lute, virginals, and drum--take full charge of this music and quite carry us away with their obvious enthusiasm and energetic performances. This is one of those rare recordings that both enlightens and entertains. A treasure that belongs in every early music library. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:
UFO wild, willing but not innocent of making great music!.......2006-08-22
UFO STILL MADE GREAT ALBUMS AFTER MS LEFT AND STILL ARE
TODAY! THAT PROVES THAT THEY WERE AND ARE MORE THAN THE
AVERAGE ROCK BAND. WWI IS A CLASSIC SONG AND ALBUM AND
MECHANIX HAS GREAT SONGS TOO AND SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED.
BUY THESE ALBUMS NOW. HIGHLY RECOMMENED. ALSO BUY THE NEW
UFO ALBUM "YOU ARE HERE". KILLER.
brilliant albums yet some songs hacked off at end.......2002-01-11
If it wasn't for the brilliant music making on these UFO recordings I would have returned my copy almost immediately. The songs are so good that I could not bear to part with it. Like the other dude said, some of the songs, albeit clear and crisp, are hacked off at the end, as if the songs were downloaded and then cut off. Funny from a record producing company. Anyway, music rocks even for today's standards if not even better. Bye for now. Pete
Hacked Off.......2001-06-05
A very sad story. Great music, but an awful record company. The first time I saw two of my favorite UFO records in one CD, I was delirious. It couldn't be better, so I bought it. The dream ended as soon as the CD began to play. Many tracks of "The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent" were hacked off at the end. It was not editing; the CD was defective. More important: it was not only that CD. As some reviewers have stated, there is a big problem with this edition. I have bought three copies (different stores and times) and been forced to return them. How come ... the company (Beat Goes On Records) keeps producing it? Beware, buyers.
Two great albums on one disk.UFO rules........2001-03-27
man i'm in heaven.two great disks in one package.i consider this to be 2 of the best albums they ever made.i think the paul chapman era was the best time for this band on a musical level,i never get tired of this stuff.the rockers rock like never before(intelligent level-wise),a near 30 year old like myself can still not be embarrased about mid-period UFO.the ballads don't put me to sleep like they did the schekner era.do yourself a favor and pick up all the chapman-era disks, you won't be sorry.the wild willing and innocent is worth it alone for "it's killing me".every song rules on this!.mechanix has one weak song called "let it rain",but it's really not all that bad on the other hand, mabey just a bit too poppy for my taste.again the rest rocks rightiously.a damn good beer swilling band,if there ever was.this band is tragically underrated, with a world gone mad i can take the great comfort of listening to the grand old hard rock of ufo, fortunenatily all sounds can be discovered by others at their own pace.
Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware).......2000-09-26
While I happen to like both of these records (Wild and Willing more than Mechanix), the people who put these out did a monumental hack job. The quality of the digital transfer itself it excellent but the the songs (on both discs) that were sequenced to run together on the original LP's have been chopped here, indicatating that whomever did the transfer was unaware of the actual contents and sequencing of the original LP's.

Victory.......2006-08-27
The original Victory can't be beat. This remix looses a lot of the original sound by replacing it with other sounds. The other songs are good though.
Freaking Awesome.......2005-10-27
I had already heard the North American release of this album, and I really liked it. Now the Japan edition is well worth that extra bit. The beats are amazing, the instruments melt with the music and its hard to believe this bizarre duo of techno and classical would go together but THEY DO!
I would say at least have a listen to those who want to buy this, it will only convince you further.
