Customer Reviews:
Many gems (and not all of them are rockers or silly).......2007-07-10
As an "I was there" Beatles-holic and later McCartney and Lennon fan (with and without Wings) - I can only agree with all the rave reviews about the performance, the selection on this set, and the great recording, too.
I have the LP with "Maybe I'm Amazed" and several live Wings concerts from my music days, on reel-to-reel tape, and over the years I have returned to a good solid (or melodious) set of McCartney crooning and rocking and sometimes even impersonating/acknowledging other greats. (On this tour, he did Elvis, Dylan, and Paul Simon I do believe; it's not been often mentioned, but there's an interesting rendition of "Richard Cory" on this CD.)
I've been programmed to love all the silly love songs, and all the basic rock and roll, as well as the classic ballads of Paul McCartney. They're all here. The only thing I'd add from my own first-reaction to listening through this concert (having been accustomed to a shorter version I taped years ago from a special television-FM simulcast "Wings Across America" special) -- There is one song which I'd not heard with this crystal-clarity, sweetness, and goosebumps of nostalgia: Bluebird. The tone and beauty of the guitar sounds in just those first few seconds reminds some of us of what an awesome balladeer McCartney was, even while he was busy being a Beatle and then post-Beatles rocker. (On the TV special McCartney recounts how a guitarist once asked him why he needed to go out on the road, being Paul McCartney and all.... McCartney said he needed to keep moving, to see that road again, and the guitarist replied, "Man, if I was Paul McCartney I'd *buy* that road!". :-) The long and winding....
The classic McCartney and Wings Concert. McCartney, a taste of his roots, and some great music, well-recorded- "a splendid time is guaranteed for all". (paraphrasing Sgt. Pepper, whose band turned 40, or 60, last month)
WINGS AT THE PEAK OF THEIR DECADE LONG FLIGHT (they show the world they can rock, too!).......2007-06-21
Wings Over America (1976) was originally released as a triple album, went to number one on the charts, and is the crowning glory of Paul McCartney's post-Beatles band, Wings (they released two more albums, then folded). This version of Wings includes includes Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and Joe English. Paul has said this was the best Wings lineup of them all. The album includes 28 songs on 2 discs, and you pretty much get the best of Wings, plus 5 Beatles songs. All sound great, and most are true to the studio versions. The biggest treat is this fantastic version of Maybe I'm Amazed. This is the best ever recording of the song, and it rocks! Speaking of rocking, there is plenty of that to be found here, too. If you thought Wings was only all about silly love songs, you're in for a nice surprise. Right from the start, with Venus And Mars/Rock show and then Jet, they are rocking. Let Me Roll It and Medicine Jar rock, too, then Call Me Back Again features some of McCartney's legendary throat-shredding vocals (think Oh! Darling). It sounds 10x better here than the studio version on V&M. The Long And Winding Road and Live And Let Die sound very good here, too. Then Wings goes into an acoustic set of 5 songs, including Blackbird, Bluebird, and of course, Yesterday, which sounds great, and brings the house down, as usual. Denny Laine sings Go Now, a song from his days with The Moody Blues, with backing vocals from Paul and the rest of the band, and that's good. Then they all run through Wings' hits, My Love, Listen To What The Man Said, Let 'Em In, Silly Love Songs, and Band On The Run. Every one sounds great, and some even sound better than the studio versions. Time To Hide, Beware My Love, Letting Go, Hi, Hi, Hi, and Soily are all wide open rockers, and believe me, this band can rock. With McCartney and guitar whiz-kid Jimmy McColloch leading the way, Wings rips right through these songs, rocking like they really mean it! Great stuff. If you're a fan of Wings, and their very special place in rock history, Wings Over America is essential. It's great music all the way through, and a performance documentary of a time when Paul McCartney and Wings were on top of the world, as they were setting attendance records in the stadiums and arenas across America.
Best concert recording by Paul.......2007-06-21
I went to the Wings over America concert in May 1976 in Atlanta. I paid $7.50 for a seat in the back of the stage.......I was lucky to get tickets!!
We just went wild when the light fell on McCartney for the opening song Venus and Mars/Rock Show....and the brass section for Jet was JUST wicked. Great opening for anyone's concert !!!
During my concert someone walked up to the stage, and threw Jelly beans at McCartney while he was playing "Yesterday" which hit the strings.......and McCartney said "quit it" One of those moments that I will rememmber always.......what an arse that guy was for doing that.
The strongest songs are "Let me Roll it", "Sprits of Ancient Egypt", "Maybe I'm amazed", "Medicine Jar", "Letting Go", "Hi, Hi, Hi".
"Soily" is one of the best endings for anyone's concert.......he just screamed his lungs out for this rocker.....which is made to last with the echo.
Listening to "Live and Let die" is fun......but the explosions are not really heard on the recording. Imagine....I was looking through bincolars at Paul playing piano.....and the whole piano looked like it blew up!! I was in shock....and so was the audience. Now it is old hat....we expect those explosions....but back then, it scared us....and you can hear from the crowd thier expressions on the explosions "Live and let die"........bang!!
The Paul's bass playing on this recording is simply amazing....as it was listening to it live. The new Wings members at the time Jimmy McCullough blazed his way on the guitar, and Joe English was a powerful drummer.
One of my complaints about this album, is that they never listed the concert site for each of the songs.....I always wondered if my concert that I went to see made it to the record.
Expensive CD......but well worth it to McCartney and Wings fans.
One Of The Greatest Live Albums Ever Made........2007-03-11
Paul McCartney andhis post-Beatles trifecta Wings truly hit their zenith during their 1976 tour. Appearing onstage for the first time in 10 years, Paul went on the road with the best lineup the ever changing group ever had, a four piece team of crack musicians (including know mainstays Denny Laine and his late wife Linda) and a renewed sense of energy that allowed Paul to reconnect with his fans in a great manner.
"Wings Over America" was the tremendously successful album the band released to commemorate the tour. Without question, it's one of the best live albms ever. From the opening medley of "Venus & Mars", "Rock Show" and "Jet" to the closing "Soily", this album is full of life and energy that only Paul can proivde. He rocks out on "Lady Madonna","Live And Let Die", "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Silly Love Songs", shows his tender side on "Maybe I'm Amazed" (this version was a hit single) and "My Love", and relaxes and lets loose on a fantastic acoustic set that includes great versions of "I've Just Seen A Face" and "Yesterday".
The rest of the band is ace. Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch are equally gifted and talented axemen, and they provide some great guitar work here, especially on "Let Me Roll It". Linda is in fine form and is nowhere near as bad as just about veryone has made her out to be. Joe English rocks out on drums, and the accompanying horn section add an extra punch to the performed songs.
Though Paul has released superior live albums as a solo artist ("Tripping The Live Fantastic", "Paul Is Live", "Back In The U.S."), to hear Wings in their peak, this is the only official documentation of just how great they were, and it's worth evey penny.
Possibly one of the best live albums around.......2006-11-06
Most albums, you can listen to every so often but spend most of their lives in the box. This one has been spinning on my turntable since it came out, even squeaking through my 8-track (in the seventies) and it is one of the few albums I just never get tired of listening to. For such an early live album, the sound is excellent. And I remember when it came out, and there were THREE records in it--WOW. If I remember right, this was the most expensive album I'd bought up to that time, and it was worth every penny. Listening to it, one feels as if they are transported back in time to a seventies rock show, with all its enthusiasm and energy. Wings was no Beatles, but it was a great band in its own right, and the mix of songs on this album is a perfect blending of Beatles songs, McCartney solo efforts, and Wings classics. And it all works.
Lovely sounds, the band obviously having a great time, playing well together to an energized audience. One listen to this live classic will take you right back to the great days of arena rock when one of the greatest musicians of all time came to America and gave it a special show.

Stellar.......2005-10-27
This album is perhaps one of the best live rock albums of all time, capturing McCartney at his best. Two discs contain stellar material from start to finish, including some gems from the Beatle era, and even Denny Lane singing on the Moody Blues' hit "Go Now." The highlight of the album, though, is probably "Maybe I'm Amazed," by all accounts a performance that eclipses the studio version.
"THE BEST LIVE MCCARTNEY EVER !!!!.......2004-01-14
PAUL MCCARTNEY PROBABLY HAS AT LEAST A HALF A DOZEN LIVE CD'S BUT TO ME THIS IS THE BEST OF THEM ALL. I MYSLF HAVE 2 OTHER LIVE DISC'S BY HIM BUT THIS IS THE BEST. FIRST OF ALL NOTHING AGAINST USING KEYBOARDS FOR THE HORNS, BUT HERE YOU GET THE REAL THING. THIS ONE ALSO HAS MANY SONGS THAT PAUL HAS LONG SINCE RETIRED. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE DID SPIRITS OF ANCIENT EGYPT LIVE? THE SOUND OF THE DISC IS REALLY NOT THAT BAD SINCE THE ONE I HAVE HAS NOT BEEN REMASTERED. THE BASS MAY BE A LITTLE HEAVY AT TIMES BUT A BELIEVE MOST NON REMASTERED DISCS ARE THIS WAY. THE DISC RUNS FOR ALMOST 2 HOURS AND THEIR REALLY ISN'T A BAD SONG ON HERE. I TRY TO KEEP IN MIND PAUL WAS JUST ABOUT 33 WHEN THIS TOUR OCCURED. HE REALLY WAS JUST HITTING HIS PEAK AT THIS TIME SO HIS VOICE SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER THAN TODAY. IF YOU LIKE PAUL'S NEWER LIVE MATERIAL, PICK UP THIS DISC AND GIVE IT A TRY. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Waited a long time to hear again ..........2007-01-20
I had forgotten how much I liked this set. I bought the 3 LP album when it first came out in the 70's and then put it away when cassettes and then CD's arrived on the scene. It was ridiculously expensive when I first saw it available on CD. When Paul released the "tripping" live set I bought that. When Paul released "back in the u.s.a." I received it as a gift. Both are fine live sets with good bands, but I kept thinking that WOA was better. Well, after buying this thru Amazon and listening I am wondering how it took me so long to return. It's just fantastic. His voice is still youthful and strong and at its peak, and the band is probably the best that he toured with (imho). I would trade any 3 of the beatle songs on this set (and throw in richard cory) for Let It Be or better yet Hey Jude just to hear how he would have performed them at the time. My personal highlights are Venus and Mars/Rock Show/Jet, Maybe I'm Amazed, Band On The Run, Hi,Hi,Hi, and even My Love. Paul has always had an eclectic library - Beatles to You Gave Me The Answer to Band On The Run to Let Em In to Soily - makes me think of Honey Pie and Helter Skelter on the White Album. This is one of the great live shows recorded and I highly recommend it to fans. My new WOA playlist is now constantly going in my office at work.
Paul McCartney At His Best.......2006-12-14
"Which musician had number one songs under the most different names?" Kasey Kasom asked on his top 40 program once in the late '70's. The answer was Paul McCartney, who had number one songs under the headings "The Beatles", "Paul McCartney", "Paul and Linda McCartney", "Paul McCartney and Wings", and "Wings".
This project is one of the longest live albums, being a triple album set in the dark ages (i.e. before CD's, when vinyl was still in style). To me, it almost seems more like a collection of live performances more than a single concert (there is no introduction at the beginning, nor any obvious encores like there are on, for example, Neil Diamond's "Hot August Night").
This project also is not just a collection of greatest hits. It does have several hit songs, both from the Beatle days ("Lady Madonna", "The Long And Winding Road", and "Yesterday") and from Wings ("Jet", "Listen To What The Man Said", "My Love", "Let Them In", "Silly Love Songs", and "Band On The Run"), as well as "Live And Let Die." There are also several good songs that were not hits, again both from the Beatles era ("I've Just Seen A Face", "Blackbird") and from the Wings era.
The concert is heavy on the "Band On The Run" and "Venus And Mars" projects. There is a segment from the then-most current project, "Wings At The Speed Of Sound", which was originally side 5 of the album and is currently tracks 6-9 of the second disk. Not performed in the concert are "Another Day", "Too Many People" and "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" (and you might argue for "Hey Jude" and "Get Back"), the only things keeping this from being a perfect review of Paul McCartney's career at that point. But it does include my two favorite Paul post-Beatle songs, "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Beware My Love".
This project has a lot of energy, that makes these recordings more exciting and lively than the originals in many cases (e.g. "I've Just Seen A Face", "Beware My Love", and "Letting Go"). The opening medley of "Venus and Mars", "Rock Show", and "Jet" is excellent.
This project is a welcome addition to any collection, both due to the songs on the project and their quality.

This album rocked the world in '76 and it's STILL ROCKIN' ON STRONG !!!.......2006-06-09
Paul, Linda and their band do a great job on this double CD set of the live, three LP album released in 1976. Paul's voice is full of energy and the band is electric. Their passion to perform enhances even further the great recordings on this two CD set.
The two CD set starts off strong with the medley of "Venus And Mars-Rock Show-Jet," then the tempo slows down in just the right way with a somewhat more mellow "Let Me Roll It." Awesome! It's great to hear the crowd enjoying these fine live performances. I really liked "Medicine Jar" in which Paul sings that "there's more to life than blues and reds;" Paul is referring to how life can be fresh and exciting without drugs. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is the classic song Paul wrote about his first wife Linda; and "The Long And Winding Road" never ceases to move me when I think of special people who have been in my life. "The Long And Winding Road" is also a slower, pensive song so when Paul and the rest launch into "Live And Let Die" there's just a little extra shock value at the beginning which is really awesome and helps you enjoy the song and its raw honesty about the cruelty in life all the more!
On the second CD, "You Gave Me The Answer" is a great song with a nice beat and a great musical arrangement! Love it! "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Silly Love Songs" are great songs, too. The two CD set ends nicely with "Soily."
This was not recorded all on one night; Paul, Linda and the band were on tour and they wanted only the very best versions of the songs for the album set. Nevertheless, don't be fooled: this is a WHOPPER of a two CD set. You'll never know that these songs were recorded on several different occasions; they were pieced together that professionally! I also agree with people who write that the sound is better than they would have expected for a live recording made at that time. I was pleased with the quality of the sound even when I listened to it all again on my portable CD player.
There are no liner notes; instead you get some awesome pictures of Paul, Linda and the band while they were on this tour. Some of the pictures have been colorized for an extra-special "psychedelic" effect; I liked that because it highlights the "intensity" with which the band played. And, if you have any doubts about that, get this CD and find out why I'm so enthusiastic!
I recommend this two CD set for Paul's fans (obviously), and fans of good ol' rock and pop. There are some classic Beatles songs, too, that add a nostalgic element to this song set and that's always a plus. Enjoy! Bless You, Paul! SMILES
McCartney at his very best, live!!.......2006-04-14
This is one of the very best live albums ever!! Paul McCartney at his very best live and rocking!! The opening of Venus and Mars/Rockshow is one of the most exciting moments in rock history, Paul McCartney launched his return to the American concert stage with some loud hard rock and roll!
This is McCartney at his peak, with one of his very best bands. I really like the fact that the band is performing mostly their own music and not so much Beatles which is the case with his current tours.
Don't hesitate one second, get this one, it's a definite McCartney classic!!

Album Description
Reissue of the 1976 album. Featuring bracing renditions of 'Maybe I'm Amazed', arguably the best of McCartney's post-Beatles songs and possibly his single greatest composition and 'Band on the Run', as well as nicely distilling down the harder side of his repertory, with a few breaks for softer songs such as 'My Love' and 'Silly Love Songs'; another highlight is the rippling bass sound, showing off that instrument in a manner closer in spirit to, say, a John Entwistle solo LP than to McCartney's more pop-focused studio work. Packaged in a paper sleeve. EMI. 2005.

Wings Over America - Remastered At Last.......2000-06-13
The mid 1980's were not a particularly good time for CD hungry Beatlefans. The actual Beatle recordings would not appear on CD until 1987, and the solo Beatle product avaivalbe was limited, at best. Paul McCartney, who was under contract with Columbia Records at the time, was fortunate enough to see much of his solo catalog released on CD before most Lennon, Harrison, & Starr material was remastered for the "new" digital medium. One of the first Macca CD's Columbia released was a 2 disc version of "Wings Over America." Beatlefans were initially overjoyed to have 2 CD's of McCartney's best "live" solo and Beatles material. Many, however, were disappointed to find that the sound quality left something to be desired.
When Paul took his catalog back to Capitol several years later, the hope was that new remastering would improve the muddy, hissy sound quality of Columbia's releases. Unfortunately, on Capitol's new "Wings Over America," there was little to no improvement. By the early 1990's, Parlophone/EMI in Europe again remastered Paul's solo catalog, and for the first time, there was finally dramatic improvement over the earlier 2 sets of reissues. However, a new "Wings Over America" was inexplicably left out of the "Paul McCartney Collection" catalog.
That's all been remedied by the title's entry into EMI Japan's recent "deluxe" McCartney remasters, which present his catalog in replica LP sleeves and remarkable sound. "Wings Over America" has returned to its' album format, and is now spread out over 3 CD's. The sound is clear, bright, and a major improvement over the earlier CD incarnations. The original album graphics (including a great mini-poster) are included, making this the definitive CD edition of his greatest "officially released" live work. If only Capitol would catch on here in the states and give Paul McCartney's underrated solo catalog the respect it deserves, perhaps one wouldn't have to spend nearly $80 on the third pressing of this title. Since it looks like that may never happen, this Japanese import is more than worth the investment. All of the new Japanese remasters are worth checking out, but this one is essential for McCartney and Beatles fans.
