5 out of 5 stars An rock n roll anthologists prize, a hard album to trump in any genre. .......2007-06-21

Okay, just look at the track list for this compilation and you know this is one of the best in classic rock history.
Priceless re-playability, if you're a Led Zeppelin snob you'll undoubtedly find something you don't like about it, as an honest fan I keep it on permanent station in my car's 5 disc changer so nobody can "borrow" it.
The fact is, if your reading a review of this album, I'm preaching to the converted. You know its good, you just want to see how many ways people can say it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent LED ZEPPELIN compilation album!.......2007-06-09

Doesn't have ALL the greatest songs (because they wouldn't fit in two CDs), but the selection is very good. Every single song on this album is a classic and has a great remastered sound! I really recommend it for people who want to discover this amazing hard rock band.
For completionists, I would recommend these two box sets for a richer LED ZEPPELIN experience:

4 out of 5 stars The songs return reframed........2007-06-04

Some people are rabid Led Zeppelin fans who think everything the band did was golden. That ain't me. I'm a fan who thinks 4 of their 9 studio albums are worth owning in their entirety, those being LZ III, LZ IV, PHYSICAL GRAFITTI and the much-maligned PRESENCE. The others all have stellar moments, but they have a lot of ho-hummery in them, too. Come on, be honest, when was the last time you had a craving to play "Thank You," Your Time Is Gonna Come," "Fool In The Rain," "The Crunge" or "Bonzo's Montreaux?" So this retrospective is welcome in that regard, containing most of the essentials in very nicely remastered glory. My one caveat is that I can think of at least three different songs from LZ III I would have preferred over "Since I've Been Lovin' You," probably one of the Zep's LEAST effective blooze numbers, but that's quibbling when I can hear "The Song Remains the Same, "The Rain Song," "D'Yer Maker," and "No Quarter" from HOUSES OF THE HOLY without having to deal with the aforementioned "Crunge" or "Dancin' Days," both songs that didn't serve HOTH very well at all. So, altogether a good setting for both the hits and the AOR-staple tracks, but if you want to purchase only one other Led Zeppelin CD besides this one, make it LZ IV. Together you might have all the Led Zeppelin you'll ever need.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs, but slight sound quality problem.......2007-05-20

The songs are great. No question about it. However, I happened to be sitting next to the right speaker of my stereo system when Immigrant Song began and I noticed the sound from the right speaker sounded a bit choppy. At first I thought the problem was with the balance control on my receiver, but I then played the CD on my PC and noticed the same problem. (Has anyone else noticed this on their CD?) I checked Atlantic Record's web site for an email address to ask if this was a known problem or if it could just be my CD. While on Atlantic's site I noticed that the art work for "Led Zeppelin Remasters" did not match the artwork on the "Led Zeppelin Remasters" sold on Amazon. The order of the songs is also different. Furthermore, the album on the Atlantic site that has the same artwork as the "Led Zeppelin Remasters" sold on Amazon is a 4-CD set, not a 2-CD set. Apparently they package the CDs differently in different countries. Maybe I'm just biased/suspicous, but I sort of suspect the sound quality problem might be due to the fact that the CD is an import. I could be wrong about that, but... I think the next time I purchase CDs on Amazon I will avoid ones listed as "Import". I could be wrong about that

5 out of 5 stars Awesome introduction to Led Zeppelin.......2007-04-30

THE BAND: Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitars), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards), John Bonham (drums & percussion).

THE DISCS: (1990) 26 songs on 2 discs clocking in at approximately 144 total minutes (about 72 minutes per disc). Included with the discs is a 6-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, several band photos, and thank you's. This 2-disc set is the (import) European "highlights" portion of the bigger 4-disc (54 total songs) set under the same name. This compilation follow the band from 1969-79. Digitally remastered sound. Produced by Jimmy Page. Label - Atlantic Records.

ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Debut "1" (4 songs), II (3), III (3), IV-Zoso (5), Houses Of The Holy (4), Physical Graffiti (3), Presence (2), In Through The Out Door (2).

COMMENTS: For a rock band as big as Led Zeppelin was, there simply aren't a whole lot of compilations to choose from. Personally, I think that's a good thing. For the true beginner, this mix is a great intro to the band. For the listener wanting a few studio albums - I'd recommend "II", "IV"... and then "Houses Of The Holy and "Physical Graffiti". All of Led Zeppelin's albums are essential in my book - some simply more so than others. Chronological order here is a bonus (the 4-disc set is surprisingly NOT in chronological order) and you can hear the band maturing through the years. Only thing that could have made this 2-disc set better is utilzing the whole disc(s). Both discs left approximately 8 minutes of blank space and why not put another song or two on each - plenty of omitted classic songs to choose from (i.e. "Over The Hills And Far Away", "The Ocean", "In My Time Of Dying", "Fool In The Rain", "Gallows Pole", "Going To California", "Thank You", "Living Loving Maid", "Moby Dick", or anything from "CODA"). The remastered sound is ultra crisp and the songs sound amazing. Looking for a great place to have many a classic Zeppelin song all in one place - look no further (5 stars).

One of the few truly bigger-than-life rock bands, Led Zeppelin continues to cast a giant shadow over contemporary rock two decades after the group's breakup. The slickly packaged set offers a solid introduction to the band's work, with two discs of remastered, sonically upgraded album tracks, plus a third disc of interviews with surviving bandmembers Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. Hearing all these Zep classics--"Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love," "Dazed and Confused," "Rock and Roll," "Kashmir," "Immigrant Song," "Black Dog," "Good Times Bad Times," "Heartbreaker," "Houses of the Holy," and "The Song Remains the Same"--assembled in one package is an impressive testament to the group's pervasive influence. --Scott Schinder

4 out of 5 stars GETTIN' THE LED OUT.......2005-12-23

LED ZEPPELIN-REMASTERS: If the Led Zep box set is too much of a good thing for you (or too tough on your purse strings), then this two CD abbreviated set (plus an interview disc) is the next best thing. Chronologically skimming the cream from all their classic albums, disc one is pretty much one of THE definitive histories of heavy metal, from the bombastic first track COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN to the last, that eight minute all-time FM radio juggernaut that need not be mentioned by name here. In between, you get the psychedelic blooze of DAZED AND CONFUSED, the stereo headphone demonstrater WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, the gargantuan crunch of IMMIGRANT SONG, and most of LED ZEPPELIN IV. The second, weaker disc represents the less interesting last half of their career, tho' the cuts from HOUSES OF THE HOLY and PHYSICAL GRAFFITTI are on a par with anything from Zep 1-4 (the reggae-accentuated D'YER MAK'ER, KASHMIR's hypnotic pulse). The wimpy ALL MY LOVE especially sounds like a final gasp, and it was, actually. There will never again be another partnership as musically volcanic as that of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, and at long last, Led Zeppelin gets a greatest hits treatment worthy of its legacy. RATING: FOUR STICKS

4 out of 5 stars Not a Knockout, but still a TKO.......2004-05-02

I am not a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan. But I have come to have enormous respect for the quartet of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. I have come to realize that the efforts of a great work ethic have produced some of the stuff that legends are made of - and Led Zep takes the cake. As a 30 something music fan, I decided this would be one of my first entry points into the Led Zeppelin music library. 'Remasters' seemed like the perfect entry point - most of Zeppelin's great songs remastered on 2 CDs - plus a third 'Interviews' CD to get insight into the band. This box set is very good. It doesn't deliver that knockout punch or homerun, but it is very good.

First the packaging - It seems that nowadays everything that is above 2 CDs that is considered a "Boxed Set". There really have become 2 categories of Boxed Sets. The first is a "Classic Boxed Set". This comes in a covered box about the size of an LP and contains CDs (sometimes in jewel cases, sometimes just on the bottom of the box) and a book about the same size. The second type is more like a 5.5" x 10" hardcover book which I term "Hardcover Box Set'. The CDs basically are stored in the hardcover binding and the book is in the middle. I much prefer what I call the Classic Boxed Set to the Hardcover format. The 'Led Zeppelin Remasters' set is a subset of Hardcover format. The disappointing thing - no book in the middle. Just two little booklets in the upper left corner. I know Led Zeppelin has more comprehensive boxed sets (The Complete Set and the 4 CD set), but I still would have liked to see a little more here.

The music is on 2 CDs and basically is divided into Early Zeppelin and Late Zeppelin. The first CD encompasses songs through the 'Led Zeppelin IV' album while the 2nd CD takes us to the end with songs from 'In Through the Out Door'. I think the Zeppelin fan will be satisfied here. I am more of a fan of the later stuff. I was very disappointed to find that 'Fool in the Rain' was not included on this set. However if you want to hear remastered versions of 'Stairway to Heaven', 'Kashmir', and 'Trampled Underfoot' - you won't be disappointed. On a side note, I think those are the three best Zep songs.

The third CD is divided into 3 sections over 43 tracks. The first section is a profile of the band which is 28 minutes long, but much of that is taken up by replaying songs such as Kashmir. I think it would have been nicer to go deeper with the band profile. The 2nd section is Station Liners and if you are a die-hard fan, this is perfect. I wish more boxed sets had preserved this type of stuff. The third section is individual Q&A with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. Much like the first section, it doesn't go as deep as I would have liked to hear. The potential is there, it just doesn't deliver the depth.

All and all, I'm still happy I got this and it left me for wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars Question.......2004-04-27

Is this the album in which "Stairway to Heaven" is an instrumental? Played with an electric guitar for about 5 1/2 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Whew!.......2003-04-06

I saw Zeppelin back in 1970. By the mid 70's "Stairway to Heaven" was a staple of midnight rock radio, and already acquiring the varnish of an FM "classic." But by then I had already lost touch with their album output. Now, thirty years later I've got my hands on this remastered set. Given that I used to listen to them on an 8 track player in my car, this is a revelation. I had to wait a long time to hear Zep on a decent stereo system, but better late than never.

That Zeppelin was a blues based band was always overshadowed by their popular acclaim as a "heavy metal" band. This set sets the record straight. They kicked [...] as a rockin' blues band. Period.

4 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin's Greatest Hits........2002-04-12

I put 4 stars because I feel that they just shouldve put this out as a double disc set and ditch the "interviews" disc. And [get rid of] the "Early Days" and "Latter Days" and there you have it. the perfect "Greatest Hits" compilation of Zeppelin. Good selections too. My only complaint is they should've replaced "Dyer Maker" (which just sounds like pop to me) with "Over The Hills & Far Away".

3 out of 5 stars A decent overview but it makes a few major mistakes.......2006-07-25

My ideal Zep compilation would look something like this (songs not found on Zep comps starred):
    Disc One (1969-1972)
    1. Good Times, Bad Times
    2. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
    3. You Shook Me*
    4. Dazed And Confused
    5. Whole Lotta Love
    6. What Is And What Should Never Be
    7. Thank You*
    8. Ramble On
    9. Immigrant Song
    10. Celebration Day
    11. Gallows Pole*
    12. That's the Way*
    13. Rock and Roll
    14. Battle of Evermore
    15. Stairway to Heaven
    16. When the Levee Breaks
    Disc 2 (1974-1979)
    1. The Song Remains the Same
    2. Over the Hills and Far Away*
    3. No Quarter
    4. The Ocean*
    5. Ten Years Gone
    6. Night Flight*
    7. Boogie With Stu*
    8. Bron-Yr-Aur*
    9. Achilles Last Stand
    10. Carouselambara*
    11. Traveling Riverside Blues*
    12. Hey Hey What Can I Do*
This one comes close-ish, but makes some mistakes - the biggest ones are including Misty Mountain Hop at the expense of When the Levee Breaks and The Rain Song and D'yer Ma'ker over the much-better Over the Hills and Far Away and The Ocean. I know I'm dreaming with Night Flight, Boogie With Stu and Bron-Yr-Aur, but along with Ten Years Gone they make up the best of Physical Graffiti - in my mind anyway, though few will agree with that perspective. (that being said, I am a fan of Kashmir, Trampled Underfoot and Houses of the Holy). And why no one's thought of including Traveling Riverside Blues or Hey Hey What Can I Do on a Zeppelin collection is beyond me. Early Days and Latter Days still makes for the ideal overview of Zeppelin, arguably the most overrated band that I can tolerate.

    5 out of 5 stars Splendid.......2006-02-18

What can I say? Just about every song on this is a classic. I thought the first disc was a bit better than the second one, although the second one contained my favourite Led Zeppelin track, 'Kashmir'. There isn't really anything else that needs to be said about this fine thing, except the simple fact: If you are a fan of Zeppelin, get your hands on it. In fact, if you are a rock fan in general, get your hands on it. You won't regret it.
