Pretzel Logic [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Pretzel Logic marked a transition for Steely Dan from a studio-bound rock band producing hits such as "Reeling in the Years" and "Do It Again" to a looser constellation of studio musicians under the direction of songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. That later version of Steely Dan would paint its masterpiece with Aja. Pretzel Logic is much more playful than that, and also jazzier than the albums that came before. The jazz intentions are made perfectly clear on "Parker's Band," a swinging tribute to bebop titan Charlie Parker, and a crafty cover of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo." The lyrics displayed their own twisted logic, presenting a tumble of images in search of a unifying principle that most often remained elusive. Steely Dan was that rare act that could work such purposeful obscurity to its advantage: "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" was a top-five hit even though nobody had a clue as to what it was about. Or, perhaps, everybody had a clue, but nobody could agree. --John Milward --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Steely Dan take me back!!!!.......2007-05-17

Whenever I feel the need to go back to the 70's, I think of Steely Dan Pretzel Logic. He was the best of the best and one of a kind. No one will ever come close to his musical talent and lyrics. Makes me remember those care-free days as a teenager...Friday night parties and Steely Dan was always there. Wouldn't trade one day during that time of my youth!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars........2007-04-13

1972 through 1975 was steely dan's greatest streak. "countdown to ecstasy," is my favorite work by this great band, but "pretzel logic" is there nipping at its heels. this is exquisite pop/rock music, best heard through headphones, because the songs are alive with complexity, beautifully constructed pieces. lot's of great guitar here, too. and the good time cheer of "east st louis toodle-do," and "parker's band," is infectious. freaky lyrics, strange harmonics, and melodies that go every which way, but always down roads that are accessible and a joy to follow. this album is something special, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Rikki don't lose that number.......2007-03-25

There's a lot more than that. I recall a reviewer once said this was the album he'd want on a desert island with him, mainly because so many different genres are represented, so you wouldn't get bored. Works for me.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Weaker" effort but still good Dan! Too bad about the Sound though!.......2006-10-22

Did Steely Dan ever really release a bad album? Although each album had its own little idiosyncracy and in this case, the third effort, we get a little less rock and roll than in their brilliant debut album and even a little country music too! Where the debut album had that brilliant guitar track "Reelin' In the Years" and the second album had the excellent guitar playing on the opening track "Bodhisattva", we don't get any blistering guitar playing here as that instrument now blends into a supporting role where the keyboards and bass take on more of a starring role.

This album furthers upon the change in the musical direction of the Dan that started with the second album. There is an even less dependence upon rock and a greater focus on what would eventually become their recognisable trademark of jazz-rock-pop on future albums.

Why the 4 stars you may ask? Well it's nothing to do with the quality of the content with regards the brilliant songwriting and musicianship but although the mini-lp sleeve replica is very well done and includes the lyrics of all the tracks in both English and Japanese with typically humorous liner notes written in 1999 by Fagen and Becker themselves, the disc isn't remastered and so the volume levels and overall clarity of the disc is not exactly what you'd expect given the high quality sound engineering technology that is currently out there.

The good thing is that the original production quality of which the Dan has always been renowned for as being close to perfection means that the sound quality is still quite good. Still, it would have been nice given the high price of this version of the album if the powers that be had invested in a remastering from the best possible masters in the vault.

If the slightly less than optimal un-remastered sound and the expensive price doesn't deter you, this comes recommended.
