The Jimi Hendrix Experience [Box set]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The arc of Jimi Hendrix's cometlike career is captured on the four-disc Jimi Hendrix Experience box set, which showcases the musician's mercurial brilliance and offers new angles from which to appraise his artistry. That the great guitarist's unreleased musings have been explored since his death three decades ago wouldn't seem to bode well for a multidisc collection such as this. But this retrospective boggles the mind merely by presenting how much Hendrix accomplished in a few short years and, in doing so, questioning what he would have achieved had he lived. --Steven Stolder

"Man, we don't fish or go bowling like other people do," Jimi Hendrix would say to bassist Billy Cox. "We make music, and this is fun." This remark explains how a man with three official studio albums could have produced so many compelling outtakes and oddities in a mere four years. To be sure, some of the alternate versions of the classic cuts across these four CDs are simply historical curiosities included to illustrate the development of a song. But the collection is also packed full of... read more

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal........2007-06-17

I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!

As emblematic of its time as of its sorcerer-like creator, 1967's Are You Experienced unleashed Jimi Hendrix onto a world in the midst of such cultural and musical shakeups that it really didn't seem as "far out" as it actually was. It wasn't just Hendrix's virtuosic skill as a pure player that was so impressive; it was, even more, the range and scope of sheer sound that he coaxed, cajoled, and ripped out of his instrument. "Purple Haze," "Manic Depression," and "I Don't Live Today" filled ears with indelible sonic images, and songs like "Foxey Lady" and "Fire" pointed the way toward a new brand of rock-charged soul music. And how about a hand for drummer Mitch Mitchell? --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars divine inspiration.......2007-05-18

listening to 'hey joe' for the first time was a major milestone in my decidely short-lived musical career. When I attended the Berklee college of music, I cited this as a huge contributing factor to the genesis of my passion for music and the audio genre. I still listen to this from time to time and and become giddy at the unashamed, unstoppable vision of a very special man. This is considered one of the greatest albums of all time for reason folks. get it. listen to the genius and the pure art.

5 out of 5 stars The Jimi album.......2007-05-15

This recording laid it down for Jimi Hendrix and in his short life in the spotlight, he never recorded a better album. I believe that he might have at least given this a run for the money down the road had he lived, but that's all speculation at this point.
The hits are here and there is surprisingly no filler. Even though it came out during the zenith of the psychedelic craze, it is far less trippy than Electric Ladyland two years later. The focus of this record is thoroughly blues, r'n'b, and rock based. Even Third Stone From The Sun has enough of a point and vibe to not succumb to the obvious psychedelic theme. The additional tracks mostly lifted from Smash Hits are a nice bonus, especially Red House, one of his greatest songs.
This is the definitive Hendrix album and one of the most important rock records because it introduced this phenomenal artist and his shocking and spectacular guitar brilliance which continues to provide inspiration for guitarists today. Without Hedrix, you can write off dozens of famous guitarists to come in his wake who tried to recreate just some of his magic. If there is one necessary Hendrix album (and there are only a few in total), this is it.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Now Experienced. Are You?.......2007-04-13

Today I was going through my dad's old LPs and Are You Experienced caught my eye, before this I had only heard the biggest cover songs(Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Fire etc.) When I brought it up to him and told him I had never heard it he gave a shocked expression, as our record player no longer works I had to go out and buy the C.D. Afterwards my dad went into a whole story on how he went to see The Experience at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and afterwards he got to shake Mitch Mitchell's hand.( Our last name is Mitchell so that's kinda cool) Some of tthe best guitar riffs i've ever heard are on this album. I also enjoyed the balance of different music styles in the album, Hard Rock( Fire, Manic Depression, Foxey Lady, Purple Haze), Blues( Red House)and Ballads( The Wind Cries Mary). In conclusion I reccomend to anyone who appreciates REAL music not the new fake s*** they put on MTV.

Also reccomended: Band of Gypsys, later work of Hendrix if you don't have the means of finding the album at least download Machine Gun.

Cheers

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut, Excellent Re-issue.......2007-03-12

This album was originally released in 1967, yet its still brimming with raw vitality and brilliance. This edition was released in 1997, and its still a shining example of how to do a re-issue.

First off, the music itself is timeless. Who hasn't heard "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" or "Purple Haze"? Tracks 1-11 represent the breadth of what was the original US LP version of the album. And man, is it great. There's variety galore in this. From the tender approach on "The Wind Cries Mary" to the psychedelic jazz-like excursion of "Third Stone From The Sun," there are plenty of avenues that this album embarks on. This ain't no blues rock plodfest. This is an experience in and of itself.

But wait, there's more!

Tracks 12-17 are the 1997 bonus tracks; some were originally on the UK but not US version of the album, while others stem from other sources. But, unlike some bonus tracks that only sully the content of the album, these go along quite well with the first 11 songs. Certain songs, like "Stone Free," are bursting with energy. Others have a bluesier vibe but its actually rather refreshing to hear that after the mindblowing nature of the album.

And the packaging itself is quite commendable. Long (albeit tremendously sycophantic) liner notes, lyrics and release dates for the songs. Well done!

Is there anything bad? Well, if psychedelic rock isn't your thing, you might not particularly like the album anyway.

Overall, this is a great example of a re-issue. They restore the album, add bonus material that compliments the original work and give us the best liner notes possible. Oh, and the CD itself has a groovy design as well.

A must-have!

Amazon.com essential recording

Bursting with ideas and energy, Jimi Hendrix's second album release of 1968 (following Axis: Bold as Love) was a double-LP set that showcased virtually everything the guitar genius had to offer: blistering blues ("Voodoo Chile"), galaxy-patrolling space jams ("1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be"), psychedelic soul ("Crosstown Traffic"), and skyscraping rock ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"). In the midst of all this was even a hit song--Hendrix's remarkable reading of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," featuring a series of baton-passing guitar solos, all distinct and brilliant. Seemingly diffuse when first released; in hindsight, kaleidoscopically eclectic. --Billy Altman

4 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland.......2007-07-03

This is Jimi Hendrix in his prime with a good recording and good quality playing.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound quality.......2007-05-16

The sound quality of Electric Ladyland is great from the BOOM BOOM BOOM at the start of "The Gods Made Love". This album was originally a 2 LP set & has much longer & blusier jams than on Hendrix's first 2 albums. I was glad to see the CD has the original artwork because I recall for a while in the 90's Hendrix's first 3 CDs were issued with different artwork than the originals which I thought was a major crime. I like the title track which was obviously inspired by Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, I wish it was longer. My favorite track was "1983,A Merman I Shall Be",a true psychedelic masterpiece I sort of wished was the album closer.

5 out of 5 stars If this isn't a 5 star CD,what is?! A masterpiece........2007-04-15

I voted yes on the review button on the reviews that give this less than 5 stars;it's good to hear what everyone has to say on this classic album. I disagree on anything less than 5 stars, though. Jimi proves to be a guitar God,and the songs themselves have stood the test of time. Eddie Kramer, the engineer, will tell you himself that this album was groundbreaking and phenomenal. As a guitar player,I consider this THE lesson on how to mix it all up. As a fan and listener,it always transports me into the mind, heart and soul of Hendrix. This "aural" painting has very subtle colours and masterful strokes...if you want to get a 5 star CD that bangs all sensibility out of you,go listen to AC/DC's Back In Black. If you want a taste of everything on the banquet table, buy this CD.It's cheap, too.Amazon is giving this one away...
Long live Hendrix!

3 out of 5 stars Not his best - not a masterpiece.......2007-04-12

Ok - most of you can just skip down to the "no" button and trash me before you read on since I'm not bowing down at the altar, but for those of you who do read on, I'll try my best to tell you why it's three stars and not a flat out "But, it's Jimi!" five stars.
First, it is not his best studio album. That would be his first. I would put this after Axis: Bold As Love as well. My biggest gripe with this, as with much of the sixties music, is that it is so dated and trippy sounding that it just wears away at you. Buried beneath stoned lyrics about breathing underwater and psychedelic (yech!) trickery is some brilliant guitar work, it's just a shame that you have to wade through the dopey stuff to get to the nugget below. I'll no doubt piss plenty of folks off, but I don't consider Jimi a particularly great songwriter. He had the riffs, no doubt, but his lyrics tended towards the silly sixties b.s. that I truly can't stand. Still, he did put together some beauties and there are some on this album as well.
The first four songs are solid, mostly because the first track is short and to the point despite not really being much of a song as much as a lot of effects. The soulful Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is sweet and Crosstown Traffic simply rocks, ala Fire and so many of Jimi's most inspired moments when he cuts the crap and just lays down the rock. Voodoo Chile is a slow blues that just simmers like a delicious stew punctuated by Jimi's hummingbird wail that about shatters glass. From there, the next five songs are good, as well, with the only questionable inclusion being Noel's Little Miss Strange. Burning of the Midnight Lamp is very good and the guitar work on Gypsy Eyes and Come On (Let The Good Times Roll) are pure Jimi brilliance.
The biggest problem I have with Electric Ladyland begins afterward, on what used to be the third side of the record. Despite a nice guitar melody on 1983, the lyrics, studio/psychedelic silliness, and the whole dated sixties vibe just kills anything else that is contained on these three tracks, and there are some nice guitar moments at the tail end of Moon, Turn the Tides, just to mention one spot. This whole section is little more than self-indulgence and filler, something left for headphone orgasms and acid trips.
The fourth section of the recording might be the best with the second half of Rainy Day (called Still Raining, Still Dreaming) kicking it off, followed by the final three strong cuts which culminate in one of Jimi's crowning achievements, Voodoo Child (Slight Return).
This is a mixed bag of stuff. I love Jimi Hendrix - at times. But there are reasons I won't just carte blanche this five stars. This album seems to lack direction, as if no one was there to tell him (or no one had the courage) "Hey Jimi...what is that crap?" It was all so groovy and so hip and so trippy, man, that no one bothered to question Jimi's self-indulgence in the peace, love, and grooviness of the times. If you want proof that perhaps even Jimi realized the excesses herein, look at the songs he recorded after this one. Those songs were concise and much more straight ahead lyrically and structurally. There is much to love on this recording but there is also much that I don't care for at all. For this low price, you won't regret the purchase, but I wonder how spectacular this often sprawling document might've been had someone cut away the trippy filler and stuck to the meat.
Okay, now you can click "no." Peace, man.

5 out of 5 stars Jimi at his Best.......2007-04-12

Why bore y'all with long, pseudo music-mag reviews? I'll just throw in my two-cents that this "double album" (originally) is so chock-full of beautiful music, trippin' music, blues, and everything else Jimi could do (which was just about everything).

I miss you, brother. Only a once-in-a-century musician like you could influence the playing style of a bloody bass player like me, and for that I modestly thank you. You've touched lots of lives in your short stay on this planet.

Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. --David Stubbs

5 out of 5 stars Shut Up and Put Yer Headphones On.......2007-06-04

I first heard this when it was first released on vinyl in 1967 and it was at a friend's apt. We were all musicians and we took turns listening to the opening with headphones. Today we have 5.1/7.1 surround etc; it's impossible to overstate what the creative use/mix of the stereo field did. To hear instruments sounding like voices swirling to fro left to right with Jimi's voice coming out of the top of your head was a mind altering Experience;pun intended. So let the Experience of this second effort take over and run through you through some great headphones and while defocusing use the album art as the Mandela, even with the mistakes and warts, it was intended to be. That was 40 years ago and it's as stunning a work today as it was then and it'll light your chakras up like a pinball.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hendrix.......2007-05-29

5 out of 5 stars The Earth Turned On His Axes.......2007-05-27

Like Terry Gilliam, Hendrix at his worst was still better than everybody else at their best. Astoundingly, Hendrix secured his place high at the top of the rock guitar pantheon on the strength of just three albums, recorded in rapid succession. Axis: Bold As Love, is the middle child, or perhaps, the redheaded stepchild. It can't touch Are You Experienced? or Electric Ladyland - but it's still pretty darn hot.

Rushed out under battle conditions, Axis shows some ragged edges. The revolting cover, stupid even by standards of the day, was the result of a mix-up. Hendrix wanted the cover art to reflect his American Indian ancestry - the record company folks in England heard Indian and, (like Columbus in reverse) thought Indian Indian. Indian religion was all the fashion then, so it seemed like a natural. All this, however, does not explain away the unadulterated ugliness.

More harrowing still is the cab ride story. In the middle of recording the album, Hendrix took the masters with him to play at a party he was attending, forgetting them in a cab. (One must wonder if his absent-mindedness was natural or enhanced.) Realizing what had happened, Chas Chandler had to remix half the album in 11 hours - astonishing considering the amount of studio wizardry featured.

The writing is off throughout, lyrics were never Jimi's strongest suit, here it shows. Even the wonderful Castles Made Of Sand has writing that would have been flagged in a high school poetry class. The kicker of the litter is You Got Me Floatin' - soaring guitar and driving beat. The one perfect song, often overlooked, is One Rainy Wish, which evokes a very particular atmosphere and then morphs into something amazing, all in the space of 3:40. Little Wing is a perennial, lovely, and one of the rare Hendrix songs often covered. If 6 Was 9, and Bold As Love, showcase Hendrix in fine form. Both are anthems of the day, and both seem to keep switching gears, every time you think they couldn't be any more thrilling, they kick up another level.

Hendrix adapted and changed at lightning speed, a lifetime of evolution compressed into a few years. Axis is a flawed album, but as the necessary bridge between two near-perfect extremes, it is fascinating and satisfying.

When I first heard snatches of "Are You Experienced", Hendrix' first album on Philly's premier, local, underground FM rock station of the time, I couldn't believe that here was a black, American expatriate, living in England, producing what had to be ARCHE-typical California psychedelic hard rock/funk like no other person before or after him! There was a confidence in Hendrix' singing/songwriting and guitar playing that NO ONE has equaled...white, black, hispanic or otherwise, since! Though he played sideman to people like Little Richard and James Brown, he was a better musician than ten of those two put together, though their influence on him was obvious. Here was a man who took three idioms: soul/R&B, rock and psychedelia, and melded them together in a unique consumme that no one has been able to duplicate, though Cream and Arthur Lee's Love came closer than most.

"Axis" is a little more introspective than "AYE"...it's like Jimi was telling us: "Here I am, at least now...whaddya think?" You hear his feelings about relationships in songs like "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'". You hear his contemplations on spirituality and sci-fi in "EXP", "Bold As Love" and "Spanish Castle Magic" and social musings in "If 6 Was 9".

His arrangements were original, forceful, cocky and catchy. There was nobody else like Jimi Hendrix...anywhere! And it's a shame we lost him so soon after he hit it big...in fact, like so many OTHER rockers from the Woodstock era, becoming a legend by the time his second album, this one, had come out!

In one year's span of time, we lost Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass Elliott and Janis Joplin...! Now Joplin, as far as I'M concerned, was no great loss, though by no means am I glad she's dead, but Hendrix and Morrison were truly stellar talents that made the world of art and music poorer with their passing. There were TONS more talented female rock singers than Joplin out there and she was the first to admit it, (Mama Cass being one of them!) But Hendrix, perhaps the greatest black crossover artist ever, and Morrison...the musical reincarnation of William Blake himself, THEY left a gaping hole where some truly great music had been!

Maybe if somebody can perfect cloning before their DNA rots TOO thoroughly....

5 out of 5 stars TIME DOES NOT GO BY... Neither in the SPANISH CASTLES MAGIC (nor these all time rock classic album).......2007-03-24

Do you still think any other musicians improved Jimi Hendrix's guitar feeling and technique??. Maybe you can name a few owning excellent skills and probably unforgettable trademark effects in their playing. But JIMI's music is not only fireworks. I strongly recommend you to listen to this remastered album, which by the way. was recorded IN THE LATE SIXTIES!!!. Then you realize why he is still the best rock guitarrist...and composer and singer and performer, but above all guitar hero. Hey!, please do not forget that unfortunately JIMI HENDRIX only recorded three official albums "Electric Layland", "Are You Experienced?" and this "Axis:Bold As Love". The rest of his discography are good profitable businesses for the heirs of its excellent legacy (of course with some exceptions in form of a pair of testimonial live recordings). Also, the best point on this re-issue is the respect (and improvement) on all the original texts and graphics from the original albums. Needless to say that the audio remastering is a plus.

The guy was damn ingenious with a guitar, but not half as industrious as the folks who've packaged and repackaged his posthumous material. First Rays of the New Rising Sun, however, is an attractive assortment of "spiritual, very earthy" late recordings that surfaced in the '70s via The Cry of Love, Crash Landing, Rainbow Bridge, and War Heroes. Hendrix appeared to be in transition between flamboyant showman and serious musician personas at the time (meaning his work, had he lived, might have been twice as meritorious and half as fun), and that makes many of these tracks all the more interesting. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars JIMI'S FINAL ALBUM, FINALLY RELEASED HIS WAY !.......2007-03-20

After guitar god Jimi Hendrix died, he released more albums than he did when he was still alive. Control of Jimi's music fell into the hands of attorneys who saw the opportunity to turn a fast buck, and quickly released this excellant music chopped up into several different albums (Rainbow Bridge, Cry of Love, War Heroes, etc.,etc.). After much litigation and several years, control of Jimi's music was given to Jimi's father and sister. They formed the Experience Hendrix record label and went to work. The first task at hand was to put together First Rays of the New Rising Sun, Jimi's title to the double-album he was putting the finishing touches on when he died. Through interviews with the producer, engineers, and musicians who worked on the project, they finished the album according to Jimi's specifications. The music on the album is sophisticated, energetic, and precise. Hendrix fans will recognize most of these songs. Freedom, Angel, Dolly Dagger, Roomful of Mirrors, Isabella, Hey Baby(New Rising Sun), and the beautiful Drifting are all highlights. Like The Beatles leaving behind the cute mop-top Beatlemania era with Rubber Soul and Revolver, Jimi seemed to be breaking away from the psycadelic wild-man theatrics of his early days, and getting down to the business of creating serious music with a conscious. You will find some of Jimi's best songs, vocals, and guitar playing on the aptly titled First Rays of the New Rising Sun. No Jimi Hendrix fan should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Cry Of Love.......2007-02-16

Back in the 70's I wore out my vinyl copy of Hendrix's Cry Of Love Album. Songs like, Drifting and My Friend have been floating around in my head for all these years and I had tried to find a copy of CRY Of Love on cd several times with no luck. Well, here it is under a different name and with some additional songs ! These are some of the best cuts Jimi Hendrix ever recorded and the music sounds as good today as it did when I was a kid. Absolutely great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have. It's as simple as that.......2006-12-20

This is the geniune article, folks: The tapes that Jimi was working on before his untimely death. Seventeen songs, and all but two (Beginnings and Stepping Stone) are must-haves for any serious Hendrix fan. Of course, it's got the lovely, oft-covered ballad Angel, which has quickly become a Hendrix standard and is one of his best songs, perfect lyrics, perfect melody, perfect instrumentation... it's all there. A masterpiece. And it's not even the best song on the disc - I'd go with either the title track or Drifting, a low-key ballad that is one of Hendrix's more underrated. Rockers In From the Storm; Freedom; Izabella and Roomfull of Mirrors are perfectly complimented by the ballads (Night Bird Flying; the aforementioned Angel; Drifting) and the funk songs (Ezy Rider, another favorite; Dolly Dagger). And then there's the hilarious, wah-wah'ed Belly Button Window. Hendrix's last recordings have been repackaged several times, but this is the one to go to - it's probably what Hendrix would've approved of, unlike the Allen Douglass releases. Hendrix's music was taking an interesting turn before his premature death. If you're curious as to how a fourth studio album would've turned out (and really, who isn't?), this should satisfy you.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Treasure.......2006-07-17

This is a treasure chest full of early unreleased Jimi. These songs really show the heart and soul of Jimi Hendrix as a thoughtful songwriter. As always, the guitar is wonderful and amazing; but there's something peaceful in even the most scorching of solos on this disc. Enjoy this wonderful collection of songs that illustrates Jimi's command of the blues and how he was able to stay true to it's roots or help it blossom into a rock 'n' roll explosion.

4 out of 5 stars Jimi's Version.......2006-05-13

"In 1994, Hendrix's own handwritten track selection for First Ray surfaced and was reprinted in the french magazine Folk & Rock (November 1994). Surprisingly it was never used when attempts were made to complete the unfinished project in the years that followed. Hendrix only completed a song list for three sides of the double LP, and wasn't sure where to place the track "Night Bird Flying". With a darker-colored pen, he seemed to indicate that it should be the second song on side A. Hendrix's track selection for First Ray of the New Rising Sun was:

Side A: Dolly Dagger, Night Bird Flying, Room Full of Mirrors, Belly Button Window, Freedom.

Side B: Easy Rider, Astro Man, Drifting, Straight Ahead.

Side C: Drifter's Escape, Comin' Down Hard On Me, Beginnings, Cherokee Mist, Angel."

The above and any other quotes in this post are taken from the book, "Black Gold the Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix" by Steven Roby.

The album is refered to above as First Ray instead of First Rays because Jimi at first was going to call it First Ray of the New Rising Sun. Another quote from Black Gold:

"Billy Cox worked on the unfinished album, and recalled the time when Hendrix asked him about the correct wording: "He asked me, 'Is it the first ray, or the rays?' I said, 'I don't know. He said, 'What do you see when you get up in the morning? When you look over the horizon do you see one ray or rays?' I said, 'I'd have to check that out.'

Hendrix would seem to have had a cover for the album in mind too...another quote:

"There is also evidence that Hendrix may have had a cover in mind for the release. On September 17th, 1970, he sketched out various faces to form the shape of a cross, with his own face in the middle. The right arm of the cross had faces of white people, including J.F.K. and Hitler and two women and a baby. On the left arm of the cross was Martin Luther King, Jr., a black woman with a crown, an African woman, and a baby. On the bottom shaft, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Cochise, two women and a baby represented Native Americans. Above Hendrix's head, the top shaft of the cross showed Buddha, Genghis Khan, a Japanese woman, and a Chinese baby, representing the Asian Peoples."

I like this CD and gave it 4/5 stars. But knowing that there are existing track listings by Hendrix out there I tend to wish they had tried to stay closer to the song orders he had chosen (Of course Jimi might have made many changes to those song orders before the album was completed).

Since these days most people can make their own CDs I would probably arrange a version (for my own listening pleasure) to look something like this:

Dolly Dagger
Night Bird Flying
Room Full of Mirrors
Belly Button Window
Freedom
Easy Rider
Astro Man
Drifting
Straight Ahead
Drifter's Escape (Can be found on the CD South Saturn Delta)
Comin' Down Hard On Me (Can be found on the Hendrix box set)
Beginnings
Here He Comes (Lover Man) (Can be found on South Saturn Delta)
Angel
Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)
Stepping Stone
Izabella
Earth Blues
In From The Storm

Approximate CD time = 79 minutes

Since the only version of Cherokee Mist I have heard is on the Box Set and has simliar patterns to that of In From The Storm I left it off. I left off My Friend since it was a leftover track from 1968. For those who are into having an instrumental open the album there is a spacey guitar instrumental called The New Rising Sun on the now deleted Hendrix CD compilation Voodoo Soup...I just wasn't sure how to fit it in due to space limitations. Pali Gap is also a track that could have been on the album as it was recorded during the same time period. Of course everyone's version of this album would probably be different (including Jimi's).

I could go on and on about this but I guess the bottom line is I like the music on this album very much I just wish it could have somehow stayed closer to Jimi's vision...

Some of Jimi Hendrix's live radio broadcasts for the BBC were released by Rykodisc in 1988 on Radio One, but The BBC Sessions, remastered and fleshed out into a two-disc completist's dream, is perhaps the best document of how the Experience sounded live in 1967. From blues stomps such as Muddy Waters's "Catfish Blues" to surly R&B vamps such as the three takes of Curtis Knight's "Driving South," Hendrix explores his roots with hardscrabble passion. Meanwhile, he pushes the psychedelic-pop spectrum with surprisingly rich versions of studio-tweaked numbers like "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp." There's plenty of slop--a stumbling jam with Stevie Wonder on "I Was Made to Love Her"--and lots of horsing around and awkward interview fragments. But in its balance of pop form, interstellar improv, R&B pedigree, and sheer charm, The BBC Sessions is about as accurate and honest a snapshot of the charismatic, still-pimply 24-year-old phenom as you're likely to hear. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite Hendrix albums. Stellar quality. A must have........2007-02-08

Jimi Hendrix first became a hit in Europe before he was noticed in the U.S. The BBC radio in England had a policy of airing a specific amount of live music broadcasts. This gave Jimi, along with Noel Reading and Mitch Mitchell, an opportunity to perform live in the BBC studios. Thus, this recording combines the best of a studio recording and a live recording by having the band perform live in the studio. The result is an amazing recording.

First of all, the quality of the recording is fantastic, especially considering the technology back then. The sound is crisp and clean. Second, the band is having a lot of fun playing and it comes through in the performances. Third, because they performed live to tape, there are no overdubs, studio effects etc. so you get to hear the band in its purest form. I own many Hendrix albums, but this is the one I listen to most often because the performance are so fresh sounding. Highly reccomended!

Before the Hendrix family got the rights to Jimi's recordings, select songs from the BBC studio recordings were previously released on a single CD, called Radio One. However, this recording contains the complete sessions, including all songs and the DJ chatter, and so is a better, more complete recording than Radio One. The BBC Sessions also contains a very informative booklet. Get it, its worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2006-12-08

Never heard this before, just great stuff. How is it this guy's leftover tapes are just mind bogglingly good compared to others' pinnacle albums. If you like blues, you'll love this....

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE RYODISC RADIO ONE LIVE SESSIONS.......2006-06-24

these are pre-canned radio shows with the ever unbearable alexis korner talking on top of the songs as wow cool groovy DJ "intro". the old Radio One was a real live in studio show that was GREAT. THese are mostly studio released cuts from the first and second album mixed with DJ chatter and one HEndrix interview with a phoney, well let's hear that song now shall we intro to the recorded album version! As one who has been seriously burned by repackaged Hendrix stuff in the past, and as a loong time fan (I remember when he lived and died) it takes alot for me NOT to recommend all things Hendrix, but I cannot recommend this. Find the actual LIVE RAdio One recording, not these packaged cut and pasted radio shows

5 out of 5 stars One of the best .......2005-12-28

I was pretty impressed with the perfomances of Jimi Hendix in this album. He, as usual puts his soul into all of his songs, but also is able to just fool around and jam like in his cover of "Hound Dog". Jimi gets to experiment with the blues as well in this album and I personally think that is where Jimi is most talented. I am also impressed with BBC as a whole, first because I have the Led Zeppelin BBC sessions, and they were equally as awesome. Second because in BBC sessions, the artists get to just have fun with the music and play with raw talent. I highly suggest this album if you are a Hendrix fan and you should look for other BBC versions of your favorite artists as well.

5 out of 5 stars Definatly worth the money........2005-12-17

This is an awesome Hendrix album I connot complain about it in one way except for the fact that the sound quality could be better but besides that this thing can't get much better. It is cool because you get to listen to Hendrix play live at the BBC Studio. If you're thinking about buying it my opinion to that question would be definatly yes I have no idea how you couldn't like this album it is well worth the money and I highly reccomend this Hendrix 2 disk set!

But the collection is also packed full of revelations.

Two 1966 live recordings from Paris--from the Experience's fourth performance--show just how early on the magic was evident, while two previously unreleased instrumentals from the Are You Experienced sessions of April 1967 show just how aware Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding, and drummer Mitch Mitchell were of their chemistry. Two songs from the landmark June Monterey Pop performance--including his unique take on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," round out disc 1. Disc 2 finds Hendrix warming to the possibilities of the recording studio, especially once he took over for Chas Chandler at the production helm. Among the highlights are a deeply grooving demo of "Somewhere" from spring 1968, with some particularly supple guitar leads, and the haunting slow blues "It's Too Bad" spurred by jazz organist Larry Young and drummer Buddy Miles (eight months before the creation of the Band of Gypsies). Disc 3 begins with an updated and more dynamic 1969 version of "Stone Free," his first composition, but mostly displays Hendrix's guitar work at its most ferocious and freewheeling. Standouts include unreleased studio takes of "Hear My Train A-Comin'" and "Room Full of Mirrors" (the latter from Billy Cox's first session with Hendrix, heard here in take number 31), plus incredible concert forays into "Red House" and "Voodoo Chile" that were originally released on the posthumous (but powerful) Hendrix in the West. The final disc is in many ways the most interesting, as Hendrix's fusion of rock, jazz, blues, and funk was becoming increasingly luminous. Whereas Hendrix used to use the studio to put finishing touches on mostly formed compositions, by 1970 he was using his free-form studio jams as a wellspring for material. Heard here for the first time, "Cherokee Mist" (with Cox and Mitchell behind him) is a mesmerizing spontaneous creation and "Come Down Hard on Me" is a funky monster. Disc 4 also adds two more cuts from Hendrix in the West, including his spirited run through "Johnny B. Goode."

Thanks to his insatiable appetite for playing music, Hendrix crammed a career's worth of development into a few short years, moving from fiery psychedelic blues-rocker to soulful and brilliant musical synthesizer. Still, judging by the arc that's deftly traced across these discs, Hendrix's best music was still to come. At times, all this "extra" Hendrix material seems like a small consolation for all the music he did not get to make. But boy, we'll take 'em. Thankfully, he didn't fish or bowl like other people do. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST BOXSETS EVER RELEASED BY ANYONE!.......2006-12-01

I will be doing a review on the legendary 4-CD masterpiece boxset entitled "THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE" by the late great guitar legend, the one and only Jimi Hendrix. This 4-CD boxset was originally released in 2000 on the Experience Hendrix Records label affiliated with MCA Records. The matrix or ID numbers of this boxset are Disc 1 - 088 112 317-2, Disc 2 - 088 112 318-2, Disc 3 - 088 112 319-2 and Disc 4 - 088 112 320-2. If I find out new information regarding this 4-CD set, I will edit this review so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible.

In my opinion, this compilation is NOTHING LESS THAN EXCELLENT OR OUTSTANDING! I thought I owned everything there is to own on Jimi Hendrix but I was wrong. When I purchased this boxset on the day it was released in 2000 and played it at home, I was TOTALLY FLOORED! I would personally love to thank Janie Hendrix (Jimi's BEAUTIFUL half-sister) for blessing us with this 4-CD TREASURE. This collection of PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RECORDINGS are MORE of Jimi's most SACRED RECORDINGS that are PRICELESS! In my opinion, EVERY SONG in this collection is GREAT! Rather than list and review every track in this boxset, (you can read all the track listings under the Jimi hendrix Experience Boxset heading) I am going to list and briefly describe my favorite tracks in this boxset so I won't extend this review into a book like I have done with my previous Hendrix reviews in the past.

As I have stated, ALL TRACKS in this collection are great but my favorites are "Killing Floor," (BLISTERING ROCKING VERSION!) "Rock Me Baby," (ANOTHER BLISTERING ROCKING VERSION!) "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," (THE FIRST GREAT LIVE VERSION OF THIS SONG EVER PERFORMED, A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES.) "Little Wing," (WHAT A BEAUTIFUL POETIC SONG) "Little Miss Lover," (THIS ROCKER KICKS A*S!) "The Wind Cries Mary," (ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL ROMANTIC and POETIC SONG THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME) "Catfish Blues," (THIS BLUES NUMBER KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S!) "Sweet Angel," (I LOVE THE LYRICS TO THIS SONG, IT WAS WRITTEN FOR HIS LATE MOTHER LUCILLE) "Gloria," (KILLER ROCKING VERSION OF VAN MORRISON'S COMPOSITION AND CLASSIC SONG) "It's Too Bad," (JIMI'S MESSAGE TO HIS HALF-BROTHER LEON. THIS IS A DEEP SONG!) "The Star Spangled Banner," (OUTSTANDING! WHAT A VERSION! UNBELIEVABLE! INCREDIBLE! MY MOST FAVORITE TRACK IN THIS WHOLE BOXSET!) "Stone Free," (THIS IS A GREAT ROCKER!) "Spanish Castle Magic," (BLISTERING KILLER VERSION!) "Hear My Train A Comin'," (I LOVE THIS BLUES SONG, IT KICKS!) "I Don't Live Today," (GREAT LIVE VERSION RECORDED LIVE AT THE FORUM IN L.A. CA. 1969.) "Red House," (THIS BLISTERING KILLER BLUES VERSION WAS RECORDED LIVE IN SAN DIEGO, CA. IN 1969.) "Purple Haze," (ANOTHER BLISTERING KILLER VERSION RECORDED LIVE IN SAN DIEGO, CA. in 1969.) "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," (ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE HENDRIX SONGS. ANOTHER GREAT ROCKER THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! THIS BLISTERING KILLER VERSION WAS RECORDED LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL IN 1969.) "Izabella," (THIS VERSION ABSOLUTELY KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! I LOVE THIS STUDIO VERSION! YOU DEFINITELY HAVE TO HEAR THIS ONE! THIS IS MY VERY CLOSE SECOND MOST FAVORITE SONG IN THIS BOXSET!) "Johnny B. Goode," (THIS BLISTERING KILLER SONG TRULY ROCKS AND KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! CHUCK BERRY HAS TO BE PROUD OF JIMI FOR THIS RENDITION OF HIS MOST SACRED CLASSIC SONG!) "Hey Baby/In From The Storm," (BLISTERING KILLER LIVE VERSION RECORDED LIVE IN MAUI, HAWAII IN 1970. READ MY REVIEW OF THIS CONCERT UNDER THE MUSIC CD HEADING THE RAINBOW BRIDGE CONCERT.) and "Slow Blues." (THE LAST STUDIO RECORDING EVER MADE BY JIMI ALIVE!)

As you can see, this is a GREAT collection! There are many more song tracks that I can list and review but I believe you know where to start. This collection is worth buying and I feel that every music fan should own this boxset as part of his or her collection.

In closing, I had a different closing planned due to many questions that arose concerning who is REALLY GOD, Hendrix or Clapton? Many Rock fans have told me that Jimi is not the FIRST TRUE GUITAR GOD, ERIC CLAPTON IS! I agree with them, Eric Clapton IS GOD! I mean NO DISRESPECT TO MR. ERIC CLAPTON. I AM A BIG FAN OF ERIC CLAPTON. To make this statement short, the reason why I call Jimi the FIRST TRUE GUITAR GOD is because he REWROTE THE RULES AS TO HOW THE GUITAR WOULD BE PLAYED. Jimi REREVOLUTIONIZED THE GUITAR AND CREATED NEW SOUNDS THAT NO ONE, EVEN FELLOW GUITARISTS KNEW EVEN EXISTED. Jimi EXPOSED THE HIDDEN SECRETS AND UNKNOWN QUALITIES THAT THE SACRED GUITAR REALLY POSSESSED. If you don't believe me, LISTEN TO THE LIVE AND STUDIO VERSIONS OF "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER" BOTH recorded in 1969. These recordings were SO FAR AHEAD OF ITS TIME, that even Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Peter Green CONTINUE TO BE BLOWN AWAY by it TO THIS DAY! And just think, Jimi Hendrix was a SELF-TAUGHT GUITARIST WITH NO FORMAL TRAINING OF ANY KIND! Jimi had NO LIMITS OR BOUNDARIES AS TO WHAT HE COULD DO WITH HIS GUITAR. Jimi Hendrix IS THE GREATEST GUITARIST OF ALL-TIME, I do not believe that Clapton, Townshend or Green will ever deny that statement. JIMI IS THE FIRST TRUE GUITAR GOD! Enough said. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIMI LIVES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always and take care. J.L.

5 out of 5 stars musica grandiosa respirando en un utero purpura ............2006-09-26

5 out of 5 stars the late great jimi hendrix.......2006-08-18

you are a timeless legend jimi!!! you are the god of the electric guitar!!! and furthermore you will always rock!!!

5 out of 5 stars A must for any hardcore Hendrix fan.......2006-07-24

I bought this box set not knowing what I was going to experience. I've been a Hendrix fan since my early teens and now that I'm nearly twenty my musical tastes are changing. Starting to turn my back on all the new age rock and going back to the classics. You get your moneys worth with this set. Pop in the four discs and get ready to go on a inner stellar ride. You get four hours of music to enjoy. THe live songs are my favs. Most of them I've never heard along with the demo's. If your into blues Jimi more than takes care of you blues fans with "Hear my Train a Comin,Red House and a few more I believe. He plays the blues just as good as that good old rock and roll. The box set has a 80 full color page book that is ontop of the CD cases. The read on this thing is intresting. I would say it is similar to the one that accompanies the Doors '97 box set. If your a hard core fan and don't own this you'll be glad when you purchase this. Newbies get the greatist hits and see what you think. This box was also released in VINYL for those of you with those good old record players.

5 out of 5 stars Find me a better Boxset for the price, I dare you........2006-05-03

Some of songs on this boxset are the best versions you'll ever find. Put all 4 discs in a CD changer, let em play, and get your mind blown. Some instrumental only songs are absolutely mesmerizing. My personal favorite is Cherokee Mist, a song that shows the true mastery of Jimi's guitar playing. He is one with his guitar, allowing the soulful, powerfully moving music in his head to come through beautifully to those blessed enough to hear him play.

With that said, I would recommend this to someone just getting into Hendrix, or even someone who had never listened to him before (shame on you). I purchased a best of Hendrix when I first started listening to him, but this boxset really had me hooked. I bought every single studio release by Hendrix shortly after, and later added any rarity i could find. You'd do the same if you heard the incredible range and intensity displayed on this boxset.

Highly Recommended.

Surprisingly well chosen for a best-of assembled from the results of a fan poll, The Ultimate Experience brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and career-defining live shots on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the record does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix-the-rocker and Jimi-the-underrated-soul-man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The best single disc Hendrix compilation available.......2006-06-30

THE BAND: Jimi Hendrix (guitars & vocals), Noel Redding (bass), Mitch Mitchell (drums & percussion). Additional musicians on select tracks include Dave Mason (guitar), Al Kooper (keyboards), and Billy Cox (bass).

THE DISC: (1993) 20 tracks clocking in a just under 72 minutes. Included with the disc is a 24-page booklet containing a rich history of Hendrix, many pictures, song titles & credits, and what songs came from which albums. Tracks 1-18 are studio recordings; the last 2 tracks ("Star Spangled Banner" and "Wild Thing") are live. Digitally remastered sound. Label - MCA Records.

COMMENTS: Short, sweet, and right to the point - this is the best single disc collection of Hendrix tunes out there. I was a product of the 70's and 80's music growing up... and I felt like I missed the Jimi Hendrix boat. I knew several of his hits from the radio, but still did not own anything of his. Decades later, "The Ultimate Experience" opened my eyes to man and it inspired me afterward to get 3 of his 4 studio albums ("Electric Ladyland", "Axis: Bold As Love" and "Are You Experienced"). This album put all those great songs in one place! Sadly, Hendrix ONLY released 4 studio albums (1966-1970)... and countless "Live" albums and bootlegs after his death. If you're new to Hendrix, or you want a great collection on one disc - try this (5-stars).

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix Lives!!!.......2006-03-22

Jimi Hendrix, on the outside lookin in, livin on through guitar soundwaves! Growing up I have never had much of any musical influence, especially not from anything so "out there" like Jimi Hendrix. I highly recommend this album to someone just turning on to Hendrix or even someone whos been listening to him for years. Awesome album.

5 out of 5 stars Yay for songs from Electric Ladyland!.......2006-02-26

In my mind, the only place the Hendrix comp entitled "Experience Hendrix" really choked was in its lack of selections from my favorite Hendrix LP, Electric Ladyland. But this makes up for it. While the aforementioned compilation only offered three songs from that LP, The Ultimate Experience gives us six, probably the six best not counting the longer tracks Voodoo Chile (the bluesy take, that is) and 1983. And the rest of the album works too, giving us mandatory selections such as Purple Haze, Wind Cries Mary, Hey Joe, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Red House, Angel and Star Spangled Banner. Though there are a handfull of songs I like that didn't make it (If 6 Was 9, Bold As Love, 3rd Stone From the Sun), this comes pretty close to being the ideal Hendrix compilation. The only misstep was Wild Thing, but what's here for the most part is essential.

5 out of 5 stars That Is How the Records Must be Remastered.......2006-02-05

I wouldn`t tell you much about the music itself - it is best collection to start your acquaintance with the music by Jimi Hendrix. I`m also the man of the 80s, so this CD for me was an openinig of the unknown land.
But if you had heard almost all music by Jimi - this CD could be interesting for you too. This remastering by CHOP EM OUT is like restoring of the picture by the old artist. While listening to this CD, you could think: "That is how albums by Jimi must have sounded". On this CD you could hear his playing in detail, and you starting to see his songs as impressionistic work by the artist.
Sound on remastered classic albums by Jimi is much worse. By the way this CD is one the best remasters which I ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE AXE-PERIENCE!.......2005-12-23

JIMI HENDRIX-THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE: There are literally dozens of discs out there that chronicle the pyrotechnic (in more ways than one) career of Jimi Hendrix, but THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE lives up to its title. Twenty terrific tracks touch upon all the important bases, including FM cornerstones (FOXY LADY, PURPLE HAZE), hopped up blues (the riveting RED HOUSE, plus VOODOO CHILE, which HENDRIX disciple STEVIE RAVE ON later tackled), his only Top 40 hit (ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER, only one of the most innovative Dylan remakes ever), psychedelia (CASTLES MADE OF SAND), and classic concert covers (STAR SPANGLED BANNER and WILD THING, barely recognizable via Hendrix' twisted visions). This is one of the best single CD history lessons imaginable, from the man who shook, rattled, and rolled rock music to its very core; the aftershocks are still being felt over three decades later. Though it was made largely to help disentangle Hendrix from a thorny contractual dispute, 1970's live Band of Gypsys LP--six tracks pulled from four concerts recorded over New Year's Eve and Day in 1969-70--stands as one of Hendrix's most remarkable guitar statements, and an integral part of his recorded legacy. This two-CD set accounts for a large portion of the remainder of those concerts, and though uneven and ragged in spots, it offers some minor revelations. Highlights include a stunning jam in a revamped "Stone Free," "Auld Lang Syne" as only Hendrix could have played it, a playful "Who Knows" with an improvised New Year's lyric, alternate versions of the guitar showcases "Machine Gun" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a downright weird "Earth Blues." Drummer Buddy Miles (with bassist Billy Cox, the Band of Gypsys in full) takes the spotlight on the funky--if very out-of-tune--"Stop." Clearly, Hendrix did well to select the cream of these gigs for the far more consistent original Gypsys album. Still, as his legend deepens, thirsty Hendrix devotees will find plenty of refreshment here. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Essential if you already have Band of Gypsys 1.......2007-04-02

I don't understand some of the low votes for this great album, even if some just don't like the editing. As others have said, bootlegs exist for those who want the shows in their entirety but this more commercially viable 2 CD set provides a sensible alternative. Because it is so much longer than the original classic, which also has a version of 'Machine Gun' which is undisputably better, it does not seem to have the same impact as that one does, but the music's just as good, if unsurprisingly with a different, but equally good sound mix. I'm surprised at complaints about sound quality. I have hundreds of live music CDs from this era and the sound quality is up there with the best. To anyone considering getting this, first try the original Band of Gypsys, preferably the 3 track extended version if you can track it down without paying too much. As it's a matter of taste, and many people who enjoy plenty of other Hendrix concerts may not like this one, see if you enjoy the single disc first before investing in this one. And if you're not outraged by the sound quality of the 3 bonus tracks (I believe 'Hear My Train' was lifted from videotape) of the original, you'll be more than pleased with the sound quality here.

I'm astonished that some people criticize the fact that some songs on the first album are not on this one. I would have been annoyed to find too much overlapping of songs on the 2 releases, and the choice as to whether to put an unheard version of a song on the album as opposed to a classic version available everywhere for over 30 years should be a no-brainer.

Whatever one may say about Buddy Miles, whose singing personally I find great but vocal scat singing and screaming intrusive, the fact is that there is far greater, more sophisticated playing from Hendrix here than on many earlier Experience concerts like Monterey for example, which were really exciting visual experiences but whose audio tracks may not contain as much great playing as a show when he was focusing more on the audio than the visual side. Even the version of 'Wild Thing' presented here has more in it musically than the early ones.

Some may have problems with Experience Hendrix, but one must admit that their releases have been light years ahead of most of those released since Hendrix died. Remember the awful mixes and edits of the Alan Douglas era, the space cadet liner notes of Michael Fairchild, Douglas's sidekick who wrote a book that pulls quotes out of Hendrix songs to prove that Jimi was on a mission to Earth to warn us of our impending destruction by a giant asteroid, and even some of the weird cover art. Now we have great clean mixes, no horrible echo or obtrusive studio effects, sensible informative liner notes, and great photos and overall artistic sensibility, extending also to their Dagger Records range of releases. So thank you Experience Hendrix, you're doing a great job, and are criticized only by those who have forgotten or have no memory of how the Hendrix legacy was handled in the past.

5 out of 5 stars No Need to be Wary At All!.......2006-12-21

I put off buying this CD because of the negative reviews I had read. What a load of rubbish.

Band of Gypsys is one of the great live recordings released in the 60's and 70's. I always loved the Gypsys rhythm section as opposed to the Experience and always wanted to hear more from this line-up. On these Fillmore concerts, Buddy Miles is right there on the beat, there's no hesitation, no pussyfooting around, he's commital and right there on the beat, rock steady - folks in the Hendrix circle used to call him "the funky cememt mixer". Anyway, I figured if Band of Gypsies was so stunning, how bad could the out-takes from these concerts be?

I'm really amazed that it took until 1999 to get this material out to the public, especially considering all the marginal material that was peddled off to the fans. This is a great, great find for Hendrix fans. If you enjoyed Band of Gypsys then you definitely want to purchase this. I really have no criticisms at all. I am "tickled" that this is so good. Sure, Machine Gun isn't quite up to the same standard as the landmark version that appeared on Band of Gypsys, but both versions are still good. Stone Free is incredible, the "New Rising Sun" material sounds great live and the band is very tight. The Gypsys are a far tighter sounding band than Experience sound on their live releases. This is not just a jam band folks. Michael Jeffries was a complete idiot for working to destroy this lineup.

Let's face it, Jimi's live releases, apart from Band of Gypsys, are very much hit or miss affairs, track back track, CD by CD. Band of Gypsys is the fantastic exception and Live at The Fillmore isn't that far off the mark. It's grrrrrrrrreat! Buy at once!

4 out of 5 stars Varying performances and quality, but good overall!.......2006-12-13

"Live at the Fillmore East" was one of those long-awaited purchases for me. After having heard "Band of Gypsys" almost 20 years ago on cassette and again on CD, I was excited to hear about the release of more footage from one of my favorite concerts ever.

When I finally did get it, I felt disappointed at first. Edits sounded clumsy, the microphones are way off on some tracks (because of technical problems, I learned later), and the performances are variable or take some getting used to, at least.

Highlights: my favorite is the jam on "Auld Lang Syne", even though the sound quality is bad and takes some getting used to, Jimi and company bring the 1970's to New York in style. "Hear My Train A Comin'" is the most intense version I've heard yet of Hendrix's deeply personal song, and "Izabella" has more life than his version from Woodstock. "Who Knows" takes some getting used to if you've heard the excellent version on the "Band of Gypsys" CD, because it departs quickly into a jam session, with Jimi even apologizing to the crowd. But on its own, no apologies are necessary, and you call tell that the band is tight and having fun. "Stepping Stone" also translates well with vibrant intensity on stage.

Indifferent: Two versions of "Machine Gun" are interesting to hear, and good performances, but nowhere near the version on Band of Gypsys. (Then again, how can you come close to that definitive version?) "Earth Blues", "Stop", "Voodoo Child" and "Changes". The last one ("Changes") starts and sounds almost identically to the "Band of Gypsys" CD version until it reaches a part where Buddy Miles improvises vocals. I prefer the other version with fewer vocals.

Not so good: Sound quality and the remaining tracks. Even the weakest songs aren't that bad though.

Overall, I have to say that I prefer the Band of Gypsys ensemble over The Experience. Nothing against Noel Redding or Mitch Mitchell, but Billy Cox and Buddy Miles provided a more cohesive sound and I always got the impression that Hendrix-Miles-Cox love the blues, which is a must if you were to play with Hendrix. In addition, with the Band of Gypsys group, the music is more 'simple' (if you want to call it that), but it is the music, rather than showmanship, that take center stage. I think that Buddy Miles made an excellent foil to Hendrix, with the additional talent of having lead and backup vocals that worked well with the music, allowing Hendrix to focus more on his guitar.

I'd recommend this to fans of later Hendrix, but I'd recommend people to get the "Band of Gypsys" CD first, since it contains the definitive performances and is also less expensive, being one disc versus two. Only then should you venture into "Live at the Fillmore East", and with the strong caveat that the sound travels into uneven territory that is unexpected from a digitally remastered release.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT LIVE COMPILATION BY HENDRIX'S "BAND OF GYPSYS!".......2006-10-03

I will be doing a review on the legendary historic landmark 2-CD live compilation set entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys - Live At The Fillmore East" by the late great guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. As always, I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible. In case you haven't read my previous review on the "Band Of Gypsys" DVD documentary, this is actually a continuation review of the "Band Of Gypsys" saga, this time focusing and highlighting on some of Jimi's unreleased song performances that were performed "Live At The Fillmore East" on 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970. This latest 2-CD set, like the DVD documentary, were both separately released in 1999 and includes additional unreleased song performances that were not included in the original partial six song live compilation released in 1970 entitled "Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys." In case you don't remember, there was another live compilation (a sequel) of additional unreleased performances that was released by Capitol Records on vinyl and cassette in 1986, but not on CD, entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys 2."

With this new latest 1999 2-CD live compilation collection, along with the original 1970 and the then latest 1986 collection, these new unreleased performances shed a new light in the "Band Of Gypsys" saga and legacy resulting in bringing these partial Fillmore East concerts to life. With this being fact, these newly released performances add much more to the "Band Of Gypsys" legend and is clearly becoming more evident of being a truer testament in showing the further advancement of the band's fully creative side while performing live, in how mixing and combining Rock n' Roll, Soul, R&B, Blues and Funk can result in a new powerfully explosive sound of music.

Before I go any further, I would like to go way back to the beginning. In my DVD documentary review, I have stressed many contributing factors on the ideas and beginnings resulting in the birth and formation of the "Band Of Gypsys," along with the many contributing factors and incidents that would fatally prove disastrous and eventually break up the "Band Of Gypsys." In this latest 2-CD release, I will go further and stress another important contributing factor that was not discussed in my previous DVD documentary review. This is another one of many contributing factors that would result in the birth of the "Band Of Gypsys."

According to numerous Hendrix biographies and the attached liner booklet that accompanied this 2-CD live compilation set, the genesis, the root of the beginning that started all of this actually evolved from a serious problem Jimi neglected which began back in 1965. In 1965, Jimi was then, a typical hungry musician, who would sign any contract or any piece of paper in hopes that it would further advance his career. Having signed numerous contracts and many pieces of paper to many, unfortunately, for Jimi, there was one piece of paper that Jimi signed that would haunt him after he became famous. Since Jimi did not fulfill his obligations with this particular company, as was the case for the many others Jimi forgot about, the plaintiff's and attorneys representing this opposing company would file a lawsuit against Jimi demanding satisfaction. With this lawsuit pending, Jimi figured that the only way to resolve and settle this lawsuit was to give them something that would satisfy and resolve this issue. With this in mind, Jimi would contact and approach his long time friend and Army buddy named Billy Cox and explained what had happened. It was at this point, when it was decided by Jimi to settle out of court by giving the company plantiff's a new studio album recording for them to release. Cox's reply to this statement was, "lets go for it!" Also during this time, while Hendrix and Cox were discussing these matters further into details, and Jimi's Drummer Mitch Mitchell taking a break in England, Buddy Miles was a frequent visitor as well as a spectator in the studios with Jimi and Billy. When Miles was told about Jimi's misfortunes and his circumstances surrounding his situation, Miles decided the same fate and results as Billy. Miles reply was, "lets help our friend in need." With Jimi sharing and explaining his new ideas for a new sound with Cox and Miles, the two would agree on liking Jimi's new ideas and would help in fulfilling these goals by playing a mixture and a combination of Rock n' Roll, Soul, R&B, Blues and Funk. With these new goals and the stage now being set, this newly born trio would eventually become known as, the "Band Of Gypsys." With Cox's and Miles' full cooperation and their loyalty to Jimi, Jimi now felt a little at ease and believed that a resolution would soon be in the works in his legal matter.

In order to create this ultimate new sound for this new album, Jimi elected in preparing fresh new original material. Jimi really wanted to record these fresh new original songs in the studio for the sole purpose, and hopes, of fulfilling his legal obligations to this company by giving them a new studio album recording for them to release, and resolve and close this legal matter. But with the Fillmore East shows coming up, preparations such as practicing and rehearsing the new song material as well as the familiar songs for the upcoming shows, and with little time remaining, would soon become the main priority resulting in the postponement of the studio recordings of the new songs and therefore, laid aside.

With Jimi and his Management being harassed and subjected to increasing pressure from the company plaintiff's attorneys, in order to satisfy the Capitol / PPX settlement, a new decision was made by Jimi's Manager Mike Jeffery to record all four of the forthcoming Live Fillmore East Concert Performances. This decision was rendered in hopes of releasing a live compilation album rather than a studio album. With all of this in mind, and showtime about to commence, ALL FOUR concert performances spanning two evenings, were recorded onto tape on 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970. Sadly, these 2-CD live compilation performances contain only sixteen of the many numerous songs that were performed in those four shows. However, it is also evident that these sixteen live song tracks do clearly audibly indicate and show the brilliance and expertise of some of the new genuine original and well-performed song material besides the regularly well known popular Hendrix songs. These sixteen live song tracks sounded EXCELLENT! The sixteen live song tracks contained and listed in this 2-CD live compilation set are reviewed as follows: DISC 1 (1.) "Stone Free," (1 January 1970, second show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (2.) "Power Of Soul," (1 January 1970, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (3.) "Hear My Train A Comin'," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT WELL PERFORMED slow blues song!) (4.) "Izabella," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (5.) "Machine Gun," (1 January 1970, second show) (one of the very first live recordings of this legendary song. It is a POWERFUL and EXPLOSIVE song WELL PERFORMED! EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! As I've stressed in my other past reviews concerning this legendary song, I've described this song in this manner; "Jimi actually presents and brings the Vietnam war to the Fillmore East audience crowd resulting in firing rounds of machine gun bullets through his powerfully explosive and violent guitar and ending with an EXCELLENT BREATHTAKING GUITAR SOLO from Jimi.") (6.) "Voodoo Child" (Slight Return) (1 January 1970, second show) (an EXCELLENT VERSION of one of my favorites) and (7.) "We Gotta Live Together." (1 January 1970, second show) (EXCELLENT SONG! WELL PERFORMED!) DISC 2 (1.) "Auld Lang Syne," (31 December 1969, second show) (Well performed the Jimi Hendrix and "Band Of Gypsys" way) (2.) "Who Knows," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! GREAT SONG!) (3.) "Changes," (31 December 1969, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (4.) "Machine Gun," (31 December 1969, second show) (another EXCELLENT WELL PERFORMED VERSION. Refer to DISC 1 for my review of the other version of "Machine Gun." My opinions of these two songs are the same. This version is also EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING!) (5.) "Stepping Stone," (1 January 1970, first show) (EXCELLENT SONG!) (6.) "Stop," (1 January 1970, first show) (another EXCELLENT SONG!) (7.) "Earth Blues," (1 January 1970, second show) (another EXCELLENT SONG!) (
