Customer Reviews:
Amazingly Wonderful.......2007-03-03
This 4 CD box set of Rod Stewart is extremely great, from start to finish, it's got a vast assortment of songs that Rod recorded between 1964-1990, all of which are great, you get a little of everything from Rod, during this time period. You get all the hits, plus some great rarities! If you love Rod, you'll love this, indeed! Also, I am pleased with the booklet that comes with it, lots of nice pictures and nice to hear Rod's comments on the songs.
Well chosen songs; poorly packaged.......2006-10-15
Box sets always bring up arguments as to what's missing but there is very little missing from this set. Having every one of Rod''s CDs, the only three missing tracks that I would have put on here are "I Feel The Whole World Go Round" from the 60s band Shotgun Express, "Farewell" from Smiler and "The Wild Horse" from Out of Order. (OK and maybe two or three others!) but overall, the selection was excellent. It puts Rod Stewar in context, and much of the 80s stuff holds up every well to the sacred early 70s stuff. (Rod was always a great singles artist, though some of his albums are really terrible.)
The box set was thrown together very quickly though, and the packaging is weak. The book is thin and flimsy and features just one essay by writer Robert Palmer, who does a good job of praising without going overboard. But Warners always treated Rod Stewart like [...] and this box set deserved a better package.
Rod "The Bod" Stewart boxed.......2006-01-11
He's done it all in his career: Classic rock, pop and now he relives the past in his The Great American Songbook series. This box set is of course is all about Rod at his very best. Not really a bad song in the four disc set which shows his transition from classic rock ("Street Fighting Man", Maggie May", etc) into the pop world ("Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?", "Downtown Train, etc). He has been one of only a few artists that could transition to different genres and still be successful. Very successful. I give the set a 4.5 based on sound quality (not remastered) otherwise, it's a 5.
Representative, but not the best material.......2005-11-12
Storyteller does not contain all of Stewart's best material. In fact, if you want all of Stewart's best songs, then just get his first 4 solo CDs, 4 CDs with The Faces, his CD with Jeff Beck (Truth) and skip Storyteller. I think these 9 CDs - released over just a 4-year period! - rival anything the Stones or Zeppelin ever did.
But if you want to hear a representative overview of his career - the good, the bad, and the ugly - then Storyteller is a good buy. Clearly, Stewart is an excellent singer and very talented, and some of his recent CDs (Vagabond Heart) are respectable, but today is generally hack.
Excellent Anniversary Of Rod's First 25 Years.......2005-09-06
Rod Stewart is one of the most successful artists in rock history. He is also one of its most diverse. Over the years, Rod has experimented with everything from folk to hard rock to disco to even modern R&B/hip-hop. In 1990, the four disc boxed set "Storyteller" was released to commemorate his first 25 years as a musician. Well, as we know, Rod has released quite a bit of work since then, most of it worth owning. So, how does "Storyteller" hold for a 15 year old compilation? Here are the positives and negatives.
Positives:
-If you want all the best from Rod's first 25 years, than this collection covers the entire spectrum. All of the hits from that period, inlcuding "Maggie May", "Tonight's The Night", "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy", "Young Turks", "Some Guys Have All The Luck" and "Forever Young", to name a few, are all on here.
-As with all boxed sets, there's a wealth of underrated gems and rarities on here. The entire first disc is filled with nothing but them!
-All the songs sound great.
-The liner notes, with an introduction by Robert Palmer and commentaries on each song by Rod himself, plus some nice photos, is excellent.
-Is fairly easy to locate.
-There's a great (then) new version of "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" only available here.
-It's available for about $ 50.00. That may seem expensive, but considering most boxed set can exceed $ 80.00, you get a pretty darn good deal.
Negatives:
-It doesn't contain all the wonderful stuff he did after 1990. So you won't find hit singles like "Rhythm Of My Heart", "The Motown Song" and "Have I Told You Lately" as well as other great stuff on here. However, since this collection was released before all that, it can't really be considered a negative as it was out of the compilers' jurisdiction.
-"I Was Only Joking" is edited. You should never put edited versions on a boxed set.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this boxed set. It is an excellent representation of Rod's best years. For the other excellent pso - 1990 material, download them.

Customer Reviews:
Legendary punk album.......2006-12-13
This album is special to me, not only because the music is great, but because it was among the first albums that got me into punk rock. Darby Crash's lyrics were nihilistic and meaningful. There's something very dark about the songs too. All the great songs are on this collection, including my favorites (Circle One, No God, Communist Eyes, Lexicon Devil, Our Way, and Dragon Lady). Be warned, this has a much harder sound than many hardcore punk bands of the time.
CLASSIC.......2006-11-16
From the moment I purchased the album years ago, it was clear that it was going to be one of the classics in the punk repertoire. In reality, the Germs might very well have helped spawn the hardcore moviement, and Joan Jett's production lends a razor-sharp immediacy to the songs.
The tunes aren't so much sung as growled, and Darby Crash's lyrics can be among the most expressive I've heard in the punk genre. There's a grueling intensity to the tunes that's exciting even now. While the band won't appeal to everybody, the record left me slack-jawed with amazement the first time I heard it. The band X may have encapsulated the hopes of the L.A. punk scene, but this record still makes the hackles on the back of your neck rise. There's nothing formulaic here. If you're willing to give it a chance (and that means something more than listening to a bunch of twenty second audio samples), it's hard to imagine your not being moved. That's why this is punk music at its very best.
raw, crusty, lightning speed!.......2006-09-10
Now this album is something else. I was laughing because of the one review I saw saying you must have some insane reason to like the germs. This is actually pretty true, you sort of need a different appreciation of music for this collection. It certainly is raw stuff, they don't spare on sounding like they know exactly what they are doing. a lot of songs though really come together like lexicon devil, media blitz, communist eyes etc. then there are songs like "shut down" which is some 8 minutes of mess. vocals range from pretty crusty to completely raspy to inaudible. Caught in my eye has a chorus saying "I got you caught in my eye" and he sounds kind of like an old man coughing up a hairball or a loogee when singing the word 'eye'. so this probably isn't making the CD too appetizing to you but it really is good stuff. straight up late 70's crusty punk. fast drums, muffled rockin guitars, crusty raspy like fast paced vocals. the germs got it all!
silly silly people........2006-07-13
if your idea of "the greatest band in the world" involves NOFX, then you should definitely NOT buy this album. This is for old punk fans or for people who want to get into punk and discover one of the greatest bands of all time. Dont ever compare the germs to NOFX. thats just stupid.
like minor threat. hate the ideology. go with the germs.......2006-07-10
darby crash is a martyr, and a genius. he's one of the most unique punk lyricists, and the germs are truly an original band. if you hate the straight edge movement you'll love the germs.

Required for any true M&P fan.......2006-02-06
Wonderful collection, when you are used to the hits though you have to appreciate the not so well known hits. At any rate John wrote most of them and it give us a chance to learn more about him through his songs. A+. If you are thinking about buying it..DO it!!!
I'd love to leave a five-star review..........2005-11-27
but...the single version of "Creeque Alley," the one with a horn-blowing free-for-all, is NOT in the collection. Thank goodness I still have my scratched-up 45rpm... Other than that, all six albums, except for "A Gathering of Flowers," are wholly-represented. Some dialogue and rehearsal cuts from that two-LP anthology are included, though.
There is an entire disc of rarities and solo cuts from each group member. Unfortunately, the songs representing Cass are the same-old, run-of-the-mill cuts ("It's Getting Better," "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "New World Coming"). What about "Talkin' To Your Toothbrush," or "You Know Who I Am?" Or even "Burn Your Hatred?" Fortunately, the theme from "Doctors' Wives" is included. I never heard it before. (What we need to hear next is the theme from "L'Amour.") I've heard some, but not all, solo recordings of Michelle, John and Denny, so I was pleased with the cuts representing their work.
I know that the group members and many fans hated "People Like Us," but I have to admit that I always loved that album!! The notes indicate that that recording may have hurt the careers of the individual group members, that they never made the charts on their own accord again. Sorry, but I don't agree. Had Cass lived longer, she would definitely have made the charts again. She was in the process of finding herself as an artist. The other group members did not try to find solo success beyond a limited number of recordings, and each ultimately pursued a different direction.
Summing up, it is amazing that this foursome created such an awesome body of work that was so small, yet so affecting. Their harmonies were amazing! And their material, even the filler and contractually-obligated, is worth listening to today, 40 years after "California Dreamin'" was released.
Ultimately Irresistable - Long Overdue.......2005-11-04
Mamas & Papas Complete Anthology wins, without any doubt, Box Set of the New Millenium's First Decade, hand down-high five-thumbs up-"10" Stars-you name the highest award. It's been a long time-a-comin'! This VOCAL group remains one of Pop Music's most mysteriously alluring ensembles in modern music history. Music fans seem to never get enough Mamas & Papas product, regardless of the ongoing endless reissues which have appeared since the group's two and half year heyday and ill fated demise. Of all the male-female ensemble groups to ever explode onto the radio/best selling charts - this group easily wins first place as the most impeccably perfect VOCAL musical creators of all time. All good things come to an end, but, some remain forever!...More on this super collection later, as this music lover listens, absorbs, and savors this indefinable collection...stay tuned...
VOICES LIKE THEIRS .......2005-09-13
Once again, a reason to despair for the questionable state of affairs known as the American music industry of today and it's quest for youthful, talentless hacks who need to be filtered, edited, vocodered, sampled, sweetened, fixed. Why, oh why, did this unparalled, marvelous set have to be compiled & released in the U.K.? The British arm of Universal is even willing to give so much room & accuracy to the American chart & release histories, not only of the band in it's regrettably all too brief period of existence, but of the subsequent individual careers of Cass, Michelle, Denny & John. Many kudos to them.
The effortless, seemingly pure harmonies, let alone the individual talents have had an unrivalled, eternally lasting, effect on anyone who loves, or even remotely gives a hoot, about what vocal music can be. The beautiful remastering of EVERYTING included in the lavish set is beyond reproach. Yes, even "People Like Us." The long ridiculed, yet not at all out of step with the period it was recorded sounds exemplary in this set. Frankly, if anything is out of step with this collection it is the Barry McGuire tracks that finish off the forth disc, but with the unmistakable vocals that back him, it is easy to forgive their inclusion.
The book is equally incredible. Previously unseen photos & artwork abound, recording & release details. Unlike so many "so-called" anthologies of more than a decade, the "digipack/book" concept is meant to be accessed, read, poured over. No threat of the book falling apart over time from poor binding, or getting lost if not put back in a jewel case immediately.
As a personal recommendation, it would be well worth any effort to follow this with the recent releases of the respective solo works from Hip-O of both Cass & Michelle. Hopefully, someday, the same will happen for the long ignored solo works of Denny & John, not to mention the difficult to find RCA releases of Cass.
101 SONGS? You've got to be kidding!.......2005-06-29
The Mamas and The Papas were nothing more than a blip on the radar screen of rock n roll history. They had a few decent hits.
Some communties sentence you to listen to this set in its entirety as community service punishment. I defy any of you to name 10 Mamas And The Papas songs off the top of your head that were NOT hits.
OK GO! I knew it, you can't do it. The best of CD's are more than enough.

Neo-prog is the version of progressive rock that emerged in the early 80s via bands like Marillion, IQ, Saga, and Pendragon. It was less complex than the classic prog of early to mid 70s Yes, Genesis, ELP, etc., and tended to have shorter songs. I would describe Mostly Autumn as neo-prog with some British folk elements thrown in the mix. They are not as folky as Iona, but folk is part of their sound.
I prefer classic prog, so I can't really get into this band. But I give them 4 stars anyway because what they do, they do pretty well.
Wonderful.......2006-03-25
This double disk set is a great buy. If you aren't totally caught up in the music by the end of your first listen, you will be before the second is through.
Always autumn........2003-02-05
_Catch the Spirit_ is the second anthology released by Mostly Autumn -- actually, it arrives not long after their first one, _Heroes Never Die_. Here's the skinny: _Heroes Never Die_ has gone out of print and has been *replaced* by this new set. Whereas the first anthology was only 12 songs (one disc), this is 23 mmm-tasty songs (two discs).
If you enjoy this band and whether you have _Heroes Never Die_ or not, I recommend for you get this. Now some people might say, "Wah, but I already have all these songs!" Well...that's only partially true. The band has recorded everything here, and sometimes they have some pretty big differences. For instance, Heather Findlay (:P'''') takes over lead vocals on "We Come and We Go". Less evident changes include a deeper bass presence on "Goodbye Alone", a more ethereal atmosphere to "The Gap Is Too Wide", a big riff opening "Nowhere to Hide" rather than drunken singing, a more rocking arrangement on "Prints in the Stone", and a spine-tingling cadences of angels on "Mother Nature" and "Heroes Never Die". If you've heard the band's live album _The Story So Far_, you are likely to recognize that many of the songs here are based on the changes made in the live setting. While the changes are largely subtle, but it's quite remarkable how subtle modifications can really alter the sound of the song. There is also a new song (or maybe an old b-side) called "Noise from My Head" which is, like everything this band does, superb. It is a more rocking song a la "Never the Rainbow" with Heather Findlay's pearly voice.
For the Mostly Autumn newbie, I can think of no better place to start (although all of their albums are excellent in their own right). _Catch the Spirit_ doesn't cost much more than their older albums but you get twice as much material. Mostly Autumns involves strains of symphonic rock flourishing around a pastoral Celtic influences and glints of hard rock. They feature a wealth of instrumentation from flutes and violins to the standard rock setup, and have goddess Heather Findlay and Bryan Josh on vocals. The band also has the most consistently beautiful guitar solos I've ever heard. I think some higher power appeared to lead guitarist Bryan Josh and gave him knowledge of sacred scales that yank at your emotions, like a combination of Steve Rothery and David Gilmour and the special X-element. Beautiful playing...and he does them ALL the time. How does he come up with this stuff?
I might be biased because autumn is my favorite season, but this is really good music. So, like, yeah...check it out. (you can tell I'm really good at ending reviews)

We all have to grow.......2001-10-29
1961-1990: A Complete Career Anthology~ Del Shannon . There have been complaints concerning Del's career that were based on this compilation. Rather than stay stagnant, a la Chubby Checker, etc., Del experienced periods of growth and change. Instead of the teenage screamer of yesterday, the series ends with the gentle screamer of the later years. I found the later years, under the leadership of Tom Petty and other greats to be inspiring and interesting in the growth of a major representative of rock 'n' roll, whereas, some listeners preferred that he remain with the old and not venture into the new.
That was the negative reaction that Ricky Nelson experienced in his advancement through the music genres and so it was with Del. I think that all of these pieces are necessary to experience the whole of the sound of Del Shannon.
This CD is a must for any early '60s rock buff.......1998-10-25
Although not an exhaustive anthology of Shannon's works, certainely the best representative collection that I have ever seen for one of the most underrated and influential artist of the 1960s. This CD spans Shannon's nearly 30 year career covering his highs and some. . . well, not so highs (witness his version of the Stone's "Under My Thumb"). Although, his stereo versions of classics such as "Runaway" and "Hats off to Larry" not to mention rare tracks like his remake of Runaway for the 1980s TV show "Crime Story" are incredible finds. Shannon was truly a man ahead of his time, and his music in stereo only further shows how unique his music was. This collection certainly has a good representative mix of songs throughout his career. Once you hear this collection, you'll see why it is nothing short of a travesty that Shannon is not more celebrated in the pantheon of rock and roll gods.

Sundazed Music, we need your help........2007-02-28
How careless of me to pass this excellent collection by! I do have the L.P., abreviated though it may be. Besides sporting overlooked gems such as "Children and Flowers", Gone For Awhile" and "Bad Misunderstanding", this collection includes an excellent cover version of John Sebastian's "Younger Girl" and their seminal hit "Mr. Dieingly Sad". The latter has a lyric comperable to "Cherish" and an arrangement that touches the deepths of the soul. Here are two major staples of the mid-sixties shaping one of the finest moments of musical history. Regretably, this collection is no longer available, so I would like to personally commission the help of Sundazed Music or Hip-O Universal(Kapp was a subsidiary of MCA) in making this available once more.
Overlooked and underrated.......2001-06-03
Despite only having two top 40 hits (Younger Girl & Mr. Dieingly Sad), the Critters were a talented (multiple lead singers, songwriters) band with a gift for melodic songs and pleasant harmonies. There isn't a bad track on this CD and several tracks could have given the Critters at least another top 40 hit if they'd survived the ravages of the draft and poor promotion. It may be out of print, but still shows up here and there and definitely worth picking up.
Fluvius Sings the Song of Angels (I'm fluvius).......2000-05-29
Oh wow. Isn't this the 45 they used to torture POW's in the 70's? No really, the songs that we are allowed to sample are very catchy, I like them in otherwords. Buy this disc and learn to like it and you will be in a league all of your own.
Good for a bunch of guys from Jersey suburbs........2000-01-31
Excellent compilation of the Critters' Kapp recordings. Wish the original sequencing of the LP had been kept intact - I'd rather hear Don's smooth voice up front than Jimmy's whine. But it's great to have "Bad Misunderstanding"," Marryin' Kind of Love" & "Don't Let the Rain Fall Down On Me" gathered together, along with a few obscurities & alternate mixes. Some of the songwriting is pretty weak & the band can't decide if they want to be the Lovin' Spoonful, The Byrds or the Beatles, but maybe that's part of their charm. I hope their later recordings for Enoch Light's Project 3 label are rereleased.
Bob Rixon, WFMU
All the Hits, but Too Much Filler.......1998-06-22
Twenty songs is too much for a band that had only minor chart success, and the price of this CD is too much because of it. Nonetheless, the band had a few bright spots, especially "Mr. Dieingly Sad," "Younger Girl," and "Don't Let the Rain Fall Down on Me." Not essential, but an interesting portrait of a noteworthy group.
