Dreamboat Annie

After futzing around Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia, for a few years, Heart finally secured a record deal in 1976. It wasn't with Epic or Capitol (which they would later sign with), but with a tiny Canadian label called Mushroom. The resulting album, Dreamboat Annie, was an impressive hard-rock debut. "Crazy on You," which spotlighted the piercing vocals of singer Ann Wilson and the chunky guitar bluster of her sister Nancy, entered the Top 40, and the more mystical "Magic Man" climbed to No. 9. Dreamboat Annie also exposed a more vulnerable side of the band: The title track, for example, was an easy-listening, harmony-laden folk song replete with banjo plucks. --Jon Wiederhorn

This is one of my favorites. I just wanted to upgrade to CD.

5 out of 5 stars Heart smart, baby.......2007-06-10

This is a fine first album for Heart. I just love the vocals, and the guitars. These ladies could rock when they were in their prime. Sure the tunes have been played over and over, but that was because they were good. Its better to burn out that to fade away, baby. Rock on.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Before the Storm-Debut Album The Spark that Lit a Million Little Girls' Rock and Roll Dreams.......2007-04-04

I hesitated to review this album for years because it holds great meaning for me. This debut album from Ann and Nancy Wilson was one of the first offerings from a legitimate band fronted by women. Although preceeded by the Sacramento based Millington sisters' band "Fanny", they were the first successful women lead band in true rock and roll. It was a time when people were listening to the radio and wondering "Is that a girl singing? This is really great rock!"

"Dreamboat Annie" offers a range of styles from bluesy funk to all out hard rock. This will be the rule for all the albums to come. Many a manly rocker might comment on the mandoline work and "slow song" on the majority of the tracks. Metaldiva is quick to remind them that this album mirrors many of the early Led Zeppelin offerings (the Zep flavor is totally infused to many of the tunes).

Up to this point Rock and Roll was considered to be a "male only" form of art. Two years before this was released, I was a preteen rock guitarist, keyboard player and singer and though there were plenty of local garage bands, including my classmates, I was not invited to jam nor even taken seriously. Afterall, there was Fleetwood Mac and pop artists, but no real rockers. Within months of its drop, I was getting invitations to play. This landmark in Rock and Roll history is considered by women artists as a validation of their craft. This proved once and for all GIRLS DO ROCK.

The hits "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" are the best known, but I encourage all to listen to the album in it's entirety. Many of the cuts, especially self named title one, have a distinctive "orchestra of guitars" sound that is very recognizeable in the early three albums. The band would later change styles back and forth, most profoundly during the late 80's, but the deep rock feel is always there. Soulful, tender vocals and walls of guitar sound make a winning combination that lasts to this day.

Metaldiva Sez: This is an essential for all R&R fans. To omit it from any collection would deem it incomplete. It will soothe you, rock you and make you smile. Get it today!

5 out of 5 stars Heart's best music is on this album, their debut.......2007-04-04

Anyone listening to this album will hear the more "idealistic" side of Ann and Nancy Wilson. They co-wrote all of the tracks and this is music from the heart (no pun intended).

The music on this album is a combination of rockers and soft, mellow acoustic ballads. Take a listen to "Sing Child" which is quintessential Zeppelin. You really hear their influence on Ann's vocals. Also check out the three different versions of "Dreamboat Annie"...truly magical.

All of the songs tell personal stories or anecdotes and are much deeper in meaning than the more commercialized power ballads that Heart released in the 80's (most of which they didn't write, by the way). Take a journey back through their musical catalogue and hear their more organic tunes like "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You". This is truly Heart at their best.

    5 out of 5 stars Heart's amazing debut album.......2005-04-17

Dreamboat Annie (1976.) Heart's first album.

In the mid seventies, two sisters named Ann and Nancy Wilson joined an all-male group that had previously gone under the name Army and White Heart. Although they had joined an all-male group, they quickly became the dominant members of the band. The band name was changed to Heart, and they eventually got a record deal - but it was on a little-known Canadian label known as Mushroom. The band's debut release, Dreamboat Annie, was released in 1976. How would this album fare in a world in which rock and roll was mostly considered a male-oriented genre? Read on for my review.

To put it simply, this is an excellent album. Although only ten tracks and forty mintues long, the album covers a lot of musical ground. The band manages to combine the classic hard rock stylings of the day with softer, more folk-oriented ones. This makes for a listening experience that is pleasing from start to finish. The first two big hits that the band scored, Crazy On You and Magic Man, can be found on this LP. But, as with most bands, there are many equally-good songs that aren't as popular. A good example of this is the bluesy rocker, White Lightning And Wine. One of the really good soft tracks the album has to offer is the sorely-underrated Soul Of The Sea. Also not to be missed are Love Me Like Music, Sing Child, and How Deep It Goes. And let's not forget about the title track. Dreamboat Annie (the song) is divided into three, non-continuous parts which follow the same basic formula but throw in just enough new elements to keep things fresh, with each version building on hte previous one. Many people call this album an essential rock classic, and why not? It rocks!

This album (and the band's third album, Magazine) was originally released on Mushroom Records, not Portrait Records. This is the reason these two albums never got reissued and remastered like the classic three Portrait albums. Whoever currently owns the rights to these albums - you desperately need to remaster them!

Whoever says women can't rock has obviously never listened to Heart. Their 1976 debut is one of their most popular albums, and one of their best ones, as well. If you're a fan of the band, or just of classic rock in general, this is one of those albums you really can't go wrong with.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for any rock fan !.......2007-02-08

Excellent first album ! Of course, due to the magical hit single "Crazy On You" ! If you should buy only one album from Heart, choose this one.
