Terribly Underrated.......2006-05-12

I'll be brief here, although there's a lot to be said for this little record. In the light of Neil's latest, Living with War, it seems appropriate to say a word about "Hawks & Doves," Neil's previous attempt to express his love for the USA. He's ready to go, if he has to, but willing to stay, pay taxes, and support the ideas of personal freedom and personal responsibility (two big Neil themes) that make America such as crazy and hopeful place to live.

And unlike George Bush, Neil really is a "uniter," and sees through the partisan divisions to a common American character. Using the commonplace political associations of American music, Neil sings "Got rock & roll, got country music playin'. If you hate me, you don't know what you're sayin'."

It's all American music, and there's something in us all and at the heart of rock and country music that we share. Chuck Berry and Hank Williams: both hell-raisers at heart, and as American as apple pie. And, his Canadian citizenship notwithstanding, so is Neil Young.

Short and sweet........2006-05-11

This is a relatively short record, but it does not lack in substance. It really is overlooked as other reviewers have wisely noted. The songs are all listenable, especially cuts like "Captain Kennedy" and "Lost In Space." Not to mention "Little Wing", the album's opener; it's not too shabby either. I was very glad when they finally issued this on CD. I had the vinyl for years, but it's now more convenient to listen to. I was one of many among fellow Young fans, that was happy to see this issued after years of writing letters to Warner Brothers asking them to release Neil's "lost" albums on CD. We only have a couple more to go! But this one is not to be overlooked. I promise you won't be disappointed.

scraping the barrel & retreads.......2006-05-10

I bought this Neil Young album when it was released, originally. I still have the vinyl, it's still in awfully good condition. I was 17 going on 18 when it came out -- and I was psyched. A NEW Neil album! I'd seen him in October, 1978, the Comes A Time/Rust Never Sleeps Tour, I'd devoured Zuma, Tonight's The Night, Decade, Rust, Stars & Bars. And ... God, was this a let-down! Listening to it, now, 25 years later -- it has no freakin redeeming value. The songs from 74, 75 (and what are they doing here, anyway?) are the only ones worth salvaging (Little Wing, Old Homestead). Save your money -- buy some Neil CDs that matter.

brilliant.......2005-11-01

I got the album in a box of old LPs that I bought at a rummage sale. Such a pleasant find. It's not often that you find conservative opinions in music, but that's not what makes this album good. It sounds like two separate records, both sides being brilliant. I love the fiddle on the second half, and the twanginess of the first half. You don't hear much music like this, and you don't hear too many people that are willing to really sing about what they believe like Neil Young does on this album. Highly reccommended.

Comes a time for this one, too........2004-06-22

This is a much-overlooked Neil Young classic. Released two years after his triumphant 'Rust Never Sleeps' trilogy of album, film and 'Live Rust' anthology, 'Hawks and Doves' returned to the pre-'Rust Never Sleeps' sounds of 'Comes a Time'. Although the CD closes with a number titled 'Hawks and Doves', it is clear that the title is also an apt description of the aural content of the complete work.

Originally released on vinyl in 1980, side one is the 'Doves' side. It features some lovely acoustic music, especially tracks one and three. 'Little Wing' (not the Jimi Hendrix composition) and 'Lost In Space' occupy a light, airy, stream-of-consciousness perch that few artists ascend to. The longest track on the disc, 'The Old Homestead', is actually a mid-1970's Neil composition. It runs almost eight minutes in length, and contains a great deal of difficult-to-make-sense-of imagery, such as "Just then the sound of hoofbeats was heard, and the sky was darkened by a prehistoric bird, who flew between the unfulfilled moon, and the naked rider to a telephone booth". Like abstract art, you could spend more than a few hours drawing meaning from this one. The closer on side one is 'Captain Kennedy'. I'm not anything near to being an expert in musical structure, but this song sure sounds like a knock-off of The Blind Fiddler, a traditional folk tune used by Stephen Stills on his 1991 'Stills Alone' CD. It's a fine melody and Neil's lyrics are interesting, but I wonder how conscious the similarity is.

While side one sticks with the soft acoustics of Neil's voice and guitar, side two is a country-rock patriotic party... the 'Hawks' side. Interestingly, this album accompanied one of the most desperate times in our nation's history in terms of self-confidence and economic prosperity. Neil gives the nation all it needs with optimistic, upbeat songs such as 'Stayin' Power' ("We got stayin' power, you and I, stayin' power through thick and thin"), 'Coastline' ("we don't back down from no trouble"), 'Union Man' ("I'm proud to be a union man"), 'Comin' Apart at Every Nail' ("Oh this country sure looks good to me"), and 'Hawks and Doves' ("Ready to go, willing to stay and pay, U.S.A., U.S.A."). It's one great album side, with Neil churning and turning up the electric guitar another notch with each song, and the fiddle that just says "down home America" will fetch a smile to your face as it explodes in each song.

Hillary O'Brien deserves special mention for providing exquisite backing vocals on side two of the vinyl version of this album. She plays the Nicolette Larson role from 'Comes a Time' for this memorable set. Also of note is Levon Helm's drums on 'The Old Homestead'.

I'm rating this a four primarily due to the severely limited length of the album. It comes in at under thirty minutes, and eight minutes are devoted to the weakest track on the album. 'Little Wing', 'Stayin' Power', and 'Union Man' barely crack two minutes, so this one is over before you know it. The songs are vintage though, and the liner notes include the lyrics.

Hound Dog Taylor and J.B. Hutto were the last disciples of the king of post-war slide guitar, the great Elmore James, and Joseph Benjamin Hutto's main source of inspiration is obvious on this his first studio album, "Hawk Squat". The first track, "Speak My Mind", is in fact a thinly-veiled cover of "Dust My Broom".

But don't let that deter you. This is one of the all-time great Chicago blues albums, recorded between 1966 and 1968, and perfectly showcasing Hutto's raw, slash-and-burn approach without ever getting muddled or losing its sense of restraint.

"Hawk Squat" boasts both powerful, hard-rocking tracks like the awesome "Hip-Shakin'", and the deep-dug grooves of "20% Alcohol" and "Notoriety Woman".
J.B. Hutto and the Hawks are accompanied by sixty-year-old Albert Luandrew, better known as Sunnyland Slim, on piano and organ, and Maurice McIntyre plays tenor saxophone on a few tracks. The sound is good, and the production brings Hutto's loud, wailing, but seemingly effortless vocals to the forefront where they belong.

There are no obvious #1 hit singles on this album - it is not a pop record, after all - but nor does it contain a single weak track. Every minute is worth listening to - and that is rare praise for a twelve-track LP!

Good Chicago slide-guitar blues.......2002-11-16

If you haven't been to the Checkerboard Lounge on East 43rd Street in Chicago at 2 AM, drinking Budweisers at the long, slender, rickety tables there, eyeing the sometimes exotic females that come into the place and listening to a smoky blues band (I have, and the experience is beautiful), this CD will get you close. And for good reason; although J B Hutto and His Hawks weren't regulars at the Checkerboard, they did have a gig at the nearby Turner's Blue Lounge back in the '60s. This is good, straight-up, old-fashioned Chicago slide-guitar blues, nothing fancy, with many tunes about women and alcohol (Rory Gallagher's great track "Too Much Alcohol", found on his Irish Tour CD, is taken from a J D Hutto track). On this CD, you get a bonus with Sunnyland Slim playing organ. J B Hutto is long gone, but the music lives on; recommended for knowledgeable blues fans. Real juke-joint stuff.

I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.

A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17

Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.

Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.

Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22

Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!

I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.

Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.

Highly recommended.

First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20

I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

Ronnie Hawkins had to strain a bit to find the edge that came naturally for the likes of Gene Vincent and, for the most part, worked outside the U.S. star-making circuit for most his career. Hence, he became the quintessential journeyman. Indeed, Hawkins is now better known as the man who first brought together the Band (as one version of his fluctuating backup group, the Hawks) than as a recording artist who charted a few times in the late '50s before settling in as a club favorite in Canada, which is where he came upon Robbie Robertson, Richard Manual, Garth Hudson, and Rick Danko. (Levon Helm, like Hawkins an Arkansas native, was already a Hawk when the others joined.) This 18-track retrospective ranges from 1959 to 1970 and offers up Hawkins's smattering of minor hits ("Forty Days," "Mary Lou," "Wild Little Willy"). It's highlighted, however, by 1963's "Who Do You Love," which is dominated by Robertson's incendiary guitar and inspired playing by the rest of the Hawks, who'd soon go from playing juke joints to backing Bob Dylan at concert halls. --Steven Stolder

Well, this one's a stinker. Oh I know all the hype about how great he was etc.etc. and how he kicked off the Band, but this is, to my jaded ears, pretty run of the mill, early rock 'n' roll. Largely forgetable. Except for "Bo Diddley". It's hard to tell it's the same band as the rest of the album. For my money it's worth the price of admission for this one song. There's a slight reprise, albeit in a different guise at the end in "Down In The Alley", that sounds almost like they're going into "Bo Diddley" part 2, but it doesn't quite make it. But the rest of the album - naa.

Once again the true story of Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks is not being told. First and foremost they where always a better live act than their first two albums attest to. They played the delta circuit here in Arkansas before heading north to Canada where their really made their name. All of the original Hawks are from Arkansas and with the exception of Levon Helm had started out with Harold Jenkins. This collection does not do their fierce reputation justice. While it is true to the original recording it is tame in comparison to their wild rip-roaring performances. The Band is given much of the credit that is actually due to the originals. Jimmy Ray Paulman (guitar), Will "Pop" Jones (piano), Levon Helm (drums) and my father Jimmy "Lefty" Evans (bass). Any fan of rockabilly or 50's music should pick this one up. And by the way "Who do you Love" was performed by the original Hawks well before they taught it to Robbie Robertson!

Far too restrained, but not without his moments.......2005-08-14

Today, Ronnie Hawkins is best known as the man whose self-formed backup musicians later became rock legends The Band, and he may as well be. Hawkins is a bit bland and too restrained to be considored a great rockabilly artist. He lacks the menacing edge of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, and he had only a few memorable songs. Too little, too late, as Hawkins came late when the rockabilly craze was dying down. It was an honorable move to try to keep the purest form of rock 'n' roll there ever was alive, but Hawkins just didn't have what it took to make the move. The main detractor was his voice, which wasn't good, not even in the untraditional rock 'n' roll way. It isn't bad on some tracks, but is a major annoyance on others. All in all, this was a respectable rock 'n' roller who had his moments, but not enough of them. The better tracks on this album are, however, quite good and the rockabilly enthusiast may pick up the compilation for those tracks. His opening Berry covers are fun, and while they aren't a match to the originals, they are better than anything Brian Setzer has produced. "One of These Days" has some very cool riffs and should've been a bigger hit than it was. The highlight of the collection is definatly "Who Do You Love". Its obvious from this cover that early on Robbie Robertson is a godly guitarist. The riffing and soloing are amazing, and the early use of distortion is fantastic. This compilation may be worth buying for rockabilly fans who already have the essentials. However, if you are new to the genre, pick up some Gene Vincent or Link Wray instead.

The ultimate collection by the greatest ballad legends from the history of country music with all of his favorite fifties and sixtiesclassic hits like "Forty Days", "Who Do You Love" and"Mary Lou". The most unique "No Depression" act around........2006-05-21

The best way to describe the sound of this brilliant band would be to imagine Michael Nesmith singing Uncle Tupelo. Can you picture that? Really, this is special stuff. The "Hawks" third release is their most consistant yet. While their first two releases were near perfect, they featured strong material throughout, but there was always two or three stand-out tracks that wouldn't leave your head for days. This one doesn't seem to have that, but overall, it seems the material is stronger as a whole. As my previous reviews stated, their music's been labelled "California Alt-country", and I don't know of any bands out today who have this sound. Priceless!

4 1/2 stars worth of "Slippin' And Slidin'".......2003-09-27

If you're looking for a CD reissue of Joseph Benjamin Hutto's last record, 1983's "Slippin' And Slidin'", you've found it.

The first ten tracks on this CD was originally released as Varrick 006, "Slippin' And Slidin'", by J.B. Hutto & The New Hawks, but this remastered edition features richer sound and two bonus tracks, the agressive instrumental "Floatin' Fruit Boogie" and the funky "Radar" (which features two simple but fiery solos from Hutto's second guitarist Brian Bisesi).

J.B. Hutto and the New Hawks are accompanied by excellent pianist Ron Levy and the Roomful of Blues reed section, saxists Greg Piccoli, Doug James and Rich Lataille, and they turn out a soulful cover of Roy Hawkins' B.B. King-composition "Why Do Things Happen To Me", and a fiery take on Fenton Robinson's "Somebody Loan Me A Dime".

The sound is excellent, and Hutto's loud, smouldering slide playing and big, booming voice shows no signs of the illness that took his life just a few months later. Brian Bisesi plays some raw, groovy rhythm guitar behind Hutto's leads, and Ron Levy adds sublime boogie piano to the funky "Eighteen Year Old Girl", and slow, soulful, jazzy fills to "Jealous Hearted Woman".

The three saxophones adds nice texture as well, particularly on "Black's Ball" and "Little Girl Dressed In Blue", but the biggest highlight on this consistently fine album has to be Hutto's screaming cover of Howlin' Wolf's ferocious "I'm Leaving You". An up-tempo blues with some tough, sinewy rhythm guitar playing and great, swinging blues piano licks, the song powers along like the proverbial freight train, making it impossible to sit still.
If you manage to do so anyway, you should check your pulse.
Really.

Fun, intelligent blues.......2003-05-09

Somebody wrote on some liner notes about J.B. Hutto's "declamatory" style of singing. "Declamatory" is the least of it. I don't know any blues singer who had as much humor and wit, both in his lyrics and in his delivery. In this wonderful recording, listen to the delightfully saucy invitation of "Pretty Baby," the wry humor and vivid images of "Jealous Hearted Woman," the sly wit of "Little Girl Dressed in Blue" and broad humor of "Radar." It is interesting to compare this set of tracks with the much earlier "Masters of Modern Blues" disk, which is also good.

HIS BEST YET!.......2006-10-01

I'm a big fan of blues and have always liked Studebaker John's music. To be equally adept at guitar, harp, singing, and writing is no small feat, but he always seems to pull it off. "Self Made Man" is his best CD to date, full of great tunes. His guitar playing seems to have been raised to a new level here. It is just outstanding. His band just chugs right along with him.My only complaint is I had to special order the disc. His record company should get more of them out there. Buy it, believe me you won't regret it.

A fantastic CD from an original bluesman!.......2006-07-14

I was fortunate enough to catch Studebaker John & the Hawks live a few weeks ago at the Highway 99 Blues Club in Seattle and was totally blown away! This was the first time I had ever seen anyone play kicking, funky rhythm guitar with one hand and scorching blues harmonica with the other hand all at the same time! When he put down his harmonica and picked up his guitar slide, I was blown away all over again! During this performance, Studebaker John played most of the songs from the Self-Made Man CD. I can attest that the CD is true to his live performance. His songs are well crafted, his lyrics are entertaining and his timing is impeccible! If you like funky, hard-edged blues with incredible harmonica and slide guitar, this CD is a must-have! I like every song on the CD, but "Self-Made Man", "The Hard Way" and "Hoo Doo You" are my favorites. Highly recommended!

This is one of the best blues cd's ever.
The opening lick on Shake is perfect.
BUY this cd and enjoy!
If you have a chance to see him in concert
do so, his shows are even better than the
recordings.

Good R&B blues.......2000-02-17

'Outside Lookin'In' is an improvement on his first release 'Too Tough'. Studebaker John offers good old R&B blues. The highlights are 'Blue Feeling' (once it gets warms up), 'Shake' and 'You done me wrong'. As with first album, the best moments are when he plays both harp and guitar. Check out 'Time will tell' and 'Tremoluxe' for better overall results.

For anyone who has tired of used up, overdone, boring remakes of Christmas music, I would like to, with joy and celebration, recommend the 'Peace on Earth' CD by renowned Native American musician John Two-Hawks! This CD will blow you away. It is that good. This is, hands down, the best Christmas music CD I have ever heard. Yes that's right, I did not say "the best Native American Christmas CD", I said "the best Christmas CD", and I meant it. I love this CD so much I am listening to it even as I write this, in May! If you are considering buying this, I say you will be very pleased if you do. This is music you and your family will listen to and love for a very long time.
