Hurdy Gurdy Man [Import] [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
2005 Digitally remastered re-issue features six bonus tracks 'Poor Cow', 'Lalena', 'Aye My Love', 'What A Beautiful Creature You Are' 'Colours' and 'Catch The Wind'. The album forshadows the coming discontent which eventually drove Donovan out of the music business. The title song, 'Hurdy Gurdy Man,' combines what are upbeat lyrics with a very dark performance. This ambivalence continues in a set of songs with a very bitter edge like 'Teas', 'Tangier', and 'Hi It's Been a Long Time', 'Yet 'Jennifer Juniper' & 'Peregrine', among others, stand in stark contrast. EMI. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A bit of a mish mash.......2007-01-03

The aim of this album seemed to be diversity which is both its strength and its weakness. The World Music and heavy elements work, the pop and cute jazz have not aged as well. Donovan could sing jazz very well, such as the version of "Young Girl Blues" he did for the BBC around this time, which is magnficent. The jazz cuts on here are the weakest by far with the singular exception of "Get Thy Bearings".

The bonus tracks are mostly singles (some recut for a greatest hits package) and b-sides. By far the best surprise is the duet "What A Beautiful Creature You Are" which is funny and sexy and would have sounded great on the Barabajagal album.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan is the Hurdy Gurdy Man.......2006-07-23

I liked the title song, but not much else on this record the first time I heard it. But after a few months of being in my car (I do a lot of long driving trips) the record started to grow on me. It's not, in my opinion, something you can like right out of the box, like "Mellow Yellow" or "Sunshine Superman," but it's every bit as good. Donovan was sort of moving in a different direction back then. There is a lot of Indian (like in the big country next to China, not Native Americans) influence here, mingled with that kind of medieval atmosphere associated with "Superman" and "Mellow." I don't know, it's hard to wrap my mind around this record that is so hard to define. I just know I like it now, that I play it a lot now.

And on this version I especially like the extra songs. "Teen Angel" originally a B side is just outstanding. And this record is a good place for "Poor Cow" to finally find a home. Also I like that it ends with the versions of "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" that were rerecorded for the Epic "Greatest Hits" record. They work really well here as does "Lalena." The Hurdy Gurdy man brought songs to the people. Donovan is the Hurdy Gurdy Man.

4 out of 5 stars Donovan - 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' (EMI).......2006-03-06

Nicely assembled twenty track collection of tunes by none other than THE '60's folk/rock stalwart/icon,known simply as Donovan.I've never been the biggest Donovan fan,but I need to be in 'the right mood' to properly enjoy this music genre. Most of his great tunes are here, like the title cut "Hurdy Gurdy Man","Get Thy Bearings",the beautifully done ballad "Jennifer Juniper","A Sunny Day","Lalena" and "Catch The Wind".So,get out those love beads, lava lamps, tie dyes and Scooby snacks.Long live the hippy era!

4 out of 5 stars Solid but unfocused effort.......2006-01-30

"The Hurdy Gurdy Man" was probably Donovan's last truly solid effort, although a few missteps mark this as a slightly lesser work than the three previous masterpieces that came before it. Although nearly all of the tracks on it are strong, the overall sound and style is perhaps a little *too* diverse, creating an unfocused atmosphere that is in contrast to the singular mood which "Sunshine Superman", "Mellow Yellow" and "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" were able to create.

The album opens with the title track, one of his best-ever compositions that starts out as a whisper and ends as a raging rocker featuring the singer backed by three future members of Led Zeppelin; however, the rest of the record is radically different from this, ranging from psychedelic drones to acoustic ballads and a few featuring the West Indian influence found on the previous single "There Is A Mountain". "Peregrin", "The River Song" and "Tangiers" belong to the psychedelic drone genre, and all three are mesmerising in style, with the "The River Song" being particularly beautiful. "Get They Bearings" is a catchy piece of jazz-rock with saxaphone, while "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl" and "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow" are slightly twee but still charming ballads in the flower-power mold Donovan is perhaps most associated with (if a bit unfairly, especially given the power of rockers like "Season Of The Witch", "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Barabajagal").

The album begins to drag towards its finish, however, and "Teas" is perhaps the weakest closing track on any of his albums, leaving one with a more mixed impression of the work overall than was necessary. When one considers the high quality of the singles and outtakes included as bonus tracks on this remaster--especially "Poor Cow", "Lalena" and the truly bizarre "What A Beautiful Creature You Are"--one wonders why these weren't included on the final release. In any case, while not a first choice for new Donovan fans (that would *have* to be "Sunshine Superman", in either its US or UK incarnations), it is still an essential purchase in rounding out his classic period, and certainly a superior effort to succeeding efforts like "Barabajagal" (get that one anyway, especially the remaster with its superior bonus cuts).

4 out of 5 stars Another Fine Donovan Re-Issue!.......2005-10-07

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" was Donovan's 1968 album, built up around the strong singles "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Jennifer Juniper". Like Donovan's other Micky Most produced albums this one touches upon a great varity of musical styles and instrumentations, with tasteful and original arrangements by John Cameron. Some of the more rocking tunes were arranged by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin - e.g. the stunningly build-up title track, starting with Donovan's silent humming joined by his acoustic guitar and building up towords its climax with electric guitars and drums. The overall sound-quality of this re-mastered version is great!

"Jennifer Juniper" is a beautifully arranged pop-ballad featuring both oboe and harp.

The album features a handful catchy free and easy tunes among which "The Entertaining of a Shy Girl"and "The Sun is a very Magic Fellow" stand out!

A couple of the droning tunes, combing traditional Eastern sounds with Celtic sounds, may sound a little dated.

"West Indian Lady" revives memories of the Caribbean feel of Donovan's earlier single "There is a Mountain".

A few tracks like "As I Recall it" and "Get Thy Bearings" are quite jazzy, and "Hi, It's Been a Long Time" is a great pop-tune, beautifully instrumentated.

Among the 7 bonus-tracks several stand out. The B-side "Teen Angel" is an early Donovan composition; a fine melody and a great addition.

The album out-take "What a Beautiful Creature You Are" is a fun track with a very catchy melody. The song features singer Lulu. The song ought have been included on the original album.

The two re-recordings of "Catch the Wind" and Colours" done for a for a best of album, are both fine, though they lack the charm of the original versions.

All in all another fine Donovan reissue!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06

I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28

I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

2 out of 5 stars It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07

Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

2 out of 5 stars No So Great.......2003-10-29

Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.

3 out of 5 stars For the Butthole Surfers Junkies.......2005-11-01

Obviously this is for the hardcore Butthole Surfers fans. I'll tell you as much information about this single as I can. This was released before Pioughd and just before the Jackofficers and Paul Leary Side projects.

1. Hurdy Gurdy Man is a cover of a Donovan song with Paul Leary on vocals. It was one of the best songs on Pioughd which is by far the band's worst record ever.

2. The Elemental instrumental Barking Dogs was not available on the original version of Pioughd (go ahead and look at the Vinyl versions on eBay) so at it's time it was considered a rare song, though it does loose its touch after a while. It does however succeed in building up a feeling of paranoia.

3. Hurdy Gurdy man (Remix) On My version it says (Remixed by Jim Melly) who is the "faceless rough trade person" who Dave Hidebound spoke of. However I've frequently seen versions on eBay who say that it's remixed by Paul Leary. This means that there could be two versions and if you want both you will have to end up buying it twice, though in slightly different form.

If you still have a record player and just want the remix(s), then if you hunt down the English Import (Once again eBay is always good) there is a limited edition Remix 12" which contains not one, not two, but three remixes! That's right, I believe it is these two remixes plus another one not on CD form. So if you want the remixes then that means you're a fanatic. This CD gets three stars because of the content that's on it. The remix that I have sounds very, very different then the original and is actually pretty fun. However only even consider buying this if you are an absolutle Butthole Surfers Junkie. Hoped this helped.

4 out of 5 stars Two previously released tracks and a remix.......2003-06-13

The Butthole Surfers rule the earth. This much is known. However, if you have the CD version of "Piouhgd," you won't need this. The awesome Donovan cover is the same version used on that record, as is "Barking Dogs." The only exclusive here is a techno remix of "Hurdy Gurdy Man," but it's only a pale imitation done by some faceless Rough Trade person, not a Paul Leary or Jackofficers remix. The only reason this even gets four stars is because the Butthole Surfers' name is on it. Go with "Piouhgd," you'll get these exact two studio tracks and eleven additional ones. You'll spiritually end up richer because of it.

5 out of 5 stars The Hurdy Gurdy Man comes singing songs of love.......2005-04-24

The idea that Donovan Leitch was to Britain what Bob Dylan was to America was always an unfair comparison to make and you have to think if Scottish folk-pop singer's first name had started with any letter other than "D" he might have been saved the analysis. Then again, anybody who cannot listen to the music these two were putting out in the 1960s and not be able to see their music as being opposites is simply not paying attention. Donovan was always the cheerful optimist, while Dylan on a good day was merely being realistic instead of pessimistic. That was just in terms of their lyrics, because once you got to the music Dylan was defined by stark guitar playing sometimes augmented by a harmonica in the style of Woody Guthrie while Donovan was helping to define the psychedelic sound.

In 1965 Donovan was a regular on the television music show "Ready, Steady, Go!" and then had his début single, the folk song "Catch the Wind." That was followed by the hit single "Colours," and then "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow." In 1967 he traveled to India with the Beatles to study with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, after which he renounced drugs and turned on to meditation. Musically these profound changes manifested themselves in the ambitious double-album "A Gift from a Flower to a Garden" and then this 1968 album, "The Hurdy Gurdy Man." The scope of the album is covered in the two hits. The title cut (on which future Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham were playing) is a mixture of Indian music with hard-rock, tinged with hallucinatory elements that made it to #5 on the charts. On the other extreme is the more ethereal "Jennifer Juniper," written for Jenny Boyd, the sister of George Harrison's wife, which climbed to #26. If you want to point to a Donovan song as epitomizing his sense of youthful innocence, this would be it.

The only real problem with this album is that producer Mickie Most lays it on a bit too thick in several of the tracks. I like the first two tracks after the title cut, with "Peregrine," a song about friendship that has some Scottish elements in it, and the excellent acoustic song "The Entertaining of a Shy Girl," which offers some nice guitar playing and a touch of woodwinds. But then "As I Recall It" spoils the mood by overdoing the jazz bit. By the time you get to the rest of the album there is a real sense that Donovan has abandoned the stage set by the opening track. In addition to "Jennifer Juniper" there is another odd to the ladies in "West Indian Lady." Then there is an emphasis on nature elements at the end with "The River Song," "A Sunny Day," and "The Sun Is a Very Magic Fellow," which helps the album end on more familiar ground than on which it began.

I was trying to decide if how good the best tracks on this album overcame the lesser efforts, and decided to round up because of "Get Thy Bearings" as the song that is not on the standard Donovan hits collection that would justify having this one as well. Telling this to a Donovan fan would be preaching to the choir and I am not arguing that "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" constitutes the one regular album you would want to have or first pick up when you moved beyond the hits collection. But this song has some of Donovan's better lyrics and if the sound had been catchier it would have made an interesting single. It has psychedelic elements, but there is also some jazz and blues, and some people might mistake it for a Stevie Windwood song, that is, until they listen to the lyrics, which is pure Donovan.

    5 out of 5 stars Flower-Power Folk Masterpiece.......2004-06-29

I came across the double CD release of "Mellow Yellow/Wear Your Love Like Heaven" last December on my way from Pennsylvania to Florida (needing some "sunshine" music to pass the cloudy, cold and snowy time away on my escape from the blustery winter that was rapidly approaching in my rear view mirror.) With that disc I rediscovered Donovan all over again - but this time in a digital way. (His "Greatest Hits" LP still well-worn in my collection.)

Anyway, as I listened I started to appreciate his music for more than just "Season Of The Witch" or "Sunshine Superman." I just recently bought the "Sunshine Superman" CD and then just today got my copy of "The Hurdy Gurdy Man." I must say, after listening to songs like "Entertaining of a Shy Girl," "As I Recall It," "Hi It's Been a Long Time," "West Indian Lady" and the superb "Tangier"...I believe this is my favorite Donovan CD yet! I liked every song, but those were the instant standouts (with the obvious exception of the title track and "Jennifer Juniper.")

Excellent release with some really interesting twists and turns than really show more depth than anything he did up to that point. At least that's what I think.

Next up "From a Flower To A Garden"...hope it's as good as everyone says. I know that "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" didn't disappoint me in the least.

4 out of 5 stars VERY MAGIC FELLOW.......2004-06-02

Wonderful slice of eastern influenced psychedelica. I don't
pretend to be an expert on this man's music, but I do know what
I like, and I like this very much. It rates up there with the
likes of SUNSHINE SUPERMAN. It is a great piece of psychedelic
rock history. Not a bad song on this one. Again I leave off that
fifth star only because the sound quality reproduction is not
up to todays standards. This man, as with the sun, is indeed
    a very magic fellow.
Thanks, and ever lasting peace to all,
    Tom

Back in my counter-culture days it seemed like Donovan was always playing on someone's stereo during our regular Hajira's into psychodelia. And yet, if you asked anyone who their favorite performers were, Donovan never made the list. A genuine case of an music becoming popular for being a 'good trip' rather than great art. Of course, that wasn't important then, and it isn't particularly meaningful know.

Donovan's work went through several phases, depending on what was popular at the time. So he started out as a Bob Dylan sound-alike, and then did a Beatles psychodelic phase before settling into what became a trademerk remaking that seemed to freely mix oriental rhythms with pre-war jazz/pop stylings. With a regular slap of psychedelic to keep things on an even keel. 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' would probably be considered the apex of that period, coming just before his breakup with Most. It is worth noting that this album, featuring Jeff Beck on lead guitar, was nearly his last - followed by a reunion album ('Cosmic Wheels') several years later, and then a long wait until the arrival of 'Sutras.'

The album forshadows the coming discontent which eventually drove Donovan out of the music business. The title song, 'Hurdy Gurdy Man,' combines what are upbeat lyrics with a very dark performance. This ambivalence continues in a set of songs with a very bitter edge - "Teas," "Tangier," and "Hi It's Been a Long Time." Yet "Jennifer Juniper" and "Peregrine," among others, stand in stark contrast. The thinly concealed conflicts that the album captures will eventually drive Donovan into retreat in the U.S.

While I will never see Donovan as one of that era's greatest musicians, he is often underrated because of the apparent simplicity of his delivery. This is unfair, since, while often imitative, he usually takes the familiar someplace where it didn't expect to go. I still enjoy his music, and believe that most listeners will find the experience worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.......2005-07-08

A real treat for lovers of Folk,Folk Rock ,Blues and everything inbetween.Mac MacLeod is the guy who taught Donovan to fingerpick and Donovan passed it on to John Lennon in India. Here we get to hear the musical journey from Folk Blues to the Jimi Hendrix like sounds of Hurdy Gurdy , the acoustic ethnic delights of Amber and not to mention the hidden gem of Argent, the cheeky 'Telescope'.All in all a fascinating musical history unfolds in this Anthology (please note it is an Anthology than spans nearly 40 years not merely an album). The final tracks are from MacLeod's current band and mark another evolution in the sound of Mac MacLeod.
A must for all fans of The Zombies, Argent, Donovan,Bert Jansch ,Wizz Jones,Jimi Hendrix and Davy Graham.

        3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2005-05-02

This is a compilation of a number of bands that Mac MacLeod played in. It's inconsistant, but there are some very good moments. The highlight is "Telescope", a wonderful pervy pop song (it's about a peeping tom praising Galileo for the invention of the telescope!) by an early version of Argent that sounds much more like the Zombies than by the arena-rock band that did "Hold Your Head Up". If you're a Zombies fan who also loves Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne", you need to buy this cd just for "Telescope". According to the liner notes, there are other recordings by this version of Argent. I hope they'll be released soon.
