The surviving members of the Fab Four spent much of the 1990s belatedly reuniting to document, promote, and occasionally awkwardly burnish their unparalleled pop music legacy. This double-disc anthology of live-in-the-studio performances originally recorded specifically for the BBC during the most frantic years of early Beatlemania was the first chapter in that effort and the first issuance of previously unreleased Beatles recordings since the late '70s. In many ways, it remains the most artistically revealing. Capturing them at their early '60s live-performance peak, these recordings pay homage to both the band's eclectic musical influences (including Chuck Berry, Phil Spector, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Larry Williams, the Coasters, and the Shirelles), and to the enthusiastic and generous sense of musical discovery and the pop proselytizing that accompanied them. A number of the Fabs' own '62-'65 singles and album tracks are also featured, but they mostly take a back seat to the generous collection of previously unreleased cover songs included here. The band's brisk, often irreverent sense of humor also comes to fore in the intros, interviews, and between-song banter. 2007 Issue at Long Last of the Transcriptions of Early Moody Blues Performances on the BBC! the Band Changed their Musical Direction in 1967 by Attempting to Create a Rock Version of Dvorak's "New World Symphony". The First Fruit of the Vision was the "Days of Future Passed" Album, One of the Most Celebrated in Rock Music (And their Discography). Followed Up by "in Search of the Lost Chord", "to Our Children's Children" and "a Question of Balance", the Band Carved a Niche in the Pop Music World that was Imitated and Emulated by Others. Like Many Other Groups of the Era, They Recorded Sessions at the BBC for Various Radio and TV Broadcasts and Those Sessions Are Presented on this Double CD Set. Cd1 Has all their Stunning Live-in-the-studio Radio Transmissions While Cd2 Includes the Audio from TV Show Tapings, Including an Appearance on "The Tom Jones Show" that was Misplaced for Many Years.

Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04

Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music,blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.

If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.

Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.

The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.

As you sample the choice cuts don't forget to digest the short version of "Nights In White Satin" clocking in a shade over three minutes."

Could you ever get enough versions of "Gypsy"? Its inclusion here only solidifies it's golden splendor.

Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12

I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.

Historic stuff.......2007-06-01

If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.

The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.

A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26

Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

The Beatles Live & Covering those who Inspired them.......2007-07-13

I grew up in the 80s and my family used to always play The Beatles, especially during the Holidays.
They were the first Rock band I have ever appreciated.
And I have many memories, spending Christmas w/ family, eating turkey, etc.
Throughout my teens I collected all The Beatles' studio albums on vinyl and Cd.
I knew much of the pop Music that was out during the 90s has borrowed from the Best.
Until recently I have never owned anything Live by The Beatles. I just recently bought 'Live at the BBC' and enjoyed it from start to finish. 69 tracks in all. Includes some 'talk' tracks and silliness.
Normally I don't care for cover songs, but The Beatles do make these 50s classics sound as if they were their own.
They cover influences like Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. I do enjoy hearing these covers and the Fab Fours originals(many unreleased) together on this set.
At this point in 1962, I don't think many in the Audiense knew that the Beatles would become one of the Greatest Rock n Roll bands of All time.
- This 2 disc set really captures The Beatles at their youngest and up-beat, just creating their sound that was to come- on 'Rubber Soul' and so on.. ~4 1/2 stars~

Doesn't it seem unfathomable that a band in their own stratosphere like the Beatles could have any releases that are underrated? The truth is there are many that aren't aware of the pure brilliance of the "BBC" and "Hamburg Germany" CD's.

It doesn't get much better than the opportunity to hear not only the plethora of songs included on the double disc but the diversity of the material. Do we take the Beatles for granted? There are times. If you listen to the music straight through it is easy to see why you may have a new appreciation for their collective genius. If you study what they were doing in 1962 compared to any other releases, it didn't take a special ear to comprehend great things were already here and a new level of honor would soon be created.

The Beatles could take a cover tune and make you think it was there own. They could mesmerize you with a ballad one moment and rock the house the next. That is what the "BBC" selections are all about.

Don't let any mention of some of the tracks sounding rough stray your course. It adds to the charm, as if you are hearing it way back when!

"Roll Over Beethoven" followed by "All My Loving." One of the many pleasurable aspects of the listening journey are the wonderful renditions of songs they didn't put on the released studio recordings these include but are not limited to the next five songs mentioned: "Shot of Rhythm and Blues" and "Some Other Guy" sound delectable through your speakers. "Carol", Johnny B. Goode", and "Memphis" couldn't sound any grander if they did it 100 more times.

When the Beatles paid homage to Chuck Berry and Little Richard and their other rhythm and blues heroes, they didn't cheat their own core of fans with the end results.

Interspersed throughout the festivities are the tunes Lennon and McCartney penned. If you want to soak up different arrangements of a myriad of songs you already know and love, it's as easy as clicking and buying.

John and George we miss you!

forgettable.......2006-10-11

This double album really passes me by, as a bit dull. I can find one really good rare track, written by Macca, 'I'll be on my way', that is the only original that is not on another album, this should have been polished and put on the album that is closest to it, time period wise.
The rest is forgettable, although I do remember a good cover of 'the honeymoon song'.

"What about my book?!".......2006-07-14

This CD should settle once and for all that the Beatles were fine performers live. It would be hard to prove that on copies of broadcasts from Shea Stadium and the Hollywood Bowl. With the exception of one obvious edit on "Hard Day's Night" (though to rectify it, they play the ending fadeout riff ad nauseum at the end of the song "Here's proving that they're playing live!" says the BBC emcee), this is the Beatles live (and usually without the fanfare of screaming teenage fans).

From 1962 to 1965, the Beatles performed live on the BBC featuring not only their own songs but other popular songs from other artists (Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Ray Charles and Buddy Holly, to name a few). There's even a few out of the ordinary songs included, like Ann Margaret's "I Just Don't Understand" (sung by John) and "The Honeymoon Song" (sung by Paul).

This is the Beatles at their most fun (and it sounds like they're indeed having fun!). Featured on this CD are are many songs never before released on LP or CD, like "Please Don't Change a Thing" and "Nothin' Shakin' (But the Leaves on the Trees" (both sung by George), "Double Shot of Rhythm and Blues," "I Got a Woman" (sung by John), "Lucille" (sung by Paul, why did that DJ have to pipe in on the instrumental introduction?), "Johnny B Goode" and "Carol" (both sung by John), "Hippy Hippy Shake" (sung by Paul), "Some Other Guy" (it's hard to believe that though this is featured in both The Compleat Beatles and The Beatles Anthology, this is the only version to surface on CD, bootlegs notwithstanding), "Young Blood" (sung by George), "Ooh, My Soul" and "Clarabella" (both sung by Paul, the latter featuring harmonica by John), "To Know Her Is to Love Her," "So How Come (No One Loves Me)," "Sure to Fall" (lead by Paul with harmonies from John and George), "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" and "Got to Find My Baby" (both sung by John), "That's Alright Mama" (sung by Paul) "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Lonesome Tears In My Eyes" (both sung by John) and the only Lennon/McCartney song never before released (at least aired on the BBC) "I'll Be On My Way." This song was given to Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas after they had written it.

Of course, there's the alternative version of "From Me to You" (retitled "From Us to You") at the beginning and there's also also notable versions of "Baby It's You" (with a jazzy coda, rather than the fadeout on Please Please Me), "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" (with no echo reverb on George's vocal) and "Honey Don't" with John on vocals rather than Ringo), "I Saw Her Standing There," "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "She's a Woman," "Things We Said Today," "Love Me Do" (with Ringo on drums), "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Rock and Roll Music," "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Till There Was You."

There are no recordings from 1962 featured here but I had read no quality recordings existed. Also included are short interviews with the Fab Four. Paul gives a rare serious answer as to what the Beatles miss in the midst of all the fame and fortune, John is the most jovial ("No, I play harp on this song! I play harmonica on 'Love Me Do'!"), Ringo gets a banana thrown at him ("'Ere, Ringo, have a banana"), George is wry as he introduces "Roll Over Beethoven" as a song that goes back to 1822 and at the beginning of Disk 1, each of the Beatles introduces themselves ("I'm Ringo and I play the drums" "I'm Paul and I play a bass" "I'm George and I play the guitar" "I'm John and I, too, play a guitar. Sometimes, I play the fool!"). Mark Lewishon provides some insightful liner notes and we learn that "Ticket to Ride" was one of the last songs the Beatles performed on the BBC. It doesn't include all the songs they performed on the BBC, since there was a CD single featuring 3 other songs from the BBC sessions not included here (also worth getting and probably even harder to find). Nevertheless, if you're a serious fan of the Beatles and this is not in your collection, this would be a worthy purchase.

Album Description

2007 four CD box set that includes all of the British Folk legends' surviving BBC radio recordings, which were taped between 1967 and 1974. It was thought, until recently, that very few of these recordings from this time remained in the BBC's archive, but a few years ago a box was discovered on a shelf at the BBC. It is a marvelous addition to the Fairport collection and is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the formation of the band The Fairports, the single best British Folk-Rock band of the late '60s, did more than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the Folk-Rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions of traditional British Folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group were also talented songwriters as well as interpreters. They were comfortable with conventional harmony-based Folk-Rock as well as tunes that drew upon more explicitly traditional sources and they boasted some of the best singers and instrumentalists of the day. 69 tracks. Finally. After years of speculation Island finally amassed all of the surviving Fairport Convention BBC sessions in the handsome 4cd box set. This is basically an expanded version of the "Heyday" CD from years ago which was expanded from the original "Heyday" on Joe Boyd's Hannibal records. That entire expanded "Heyday" is here and a lot more. There is even a disc of off air recordings with Judy Dyble in vocal chair from 1967 and recordings from the "Liege and Leaf " post Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson period also. Also included is a history of the group and the sessions. I have to admit it is on the pricey side but to get the clearances and the amount of research and assistance from fans it's expected but worth it and it makes a nice gift to.

Radio Fairport.......2007-04-25

In 1987 the Original "Heyday" was Released on Joe Boyd's Hannibal Records. Culled from BBC Radio Sessions from 1968-69, this was the Sandy Denny/Ian Matthews Version of Fairport Convention when they were known as "England's Jefferson Airplane". That Title was not a Put-Down against Fairport or The Airplane but a way to Explain this Presentation of American Music by these Fantastic English Musicians. The Songs on "Heyday" were not Featured on their early Records but the were staples of the Concerts of 1967-69. Showing another side of this Band "Heyday" featured such writers as Bob Dylan, Eric Anderson, Joni Mitchell, Richard Farina and Leonard Cohan that the British Folks ( With the exception of Dylan ) hadn't heard on their Shores Before.

In 2002 "Heyday" was Re-released and expanded to 20 tracks and Remastered to include some "Liege and Lief" material. Bootlegs were released (all two of them) of even more BBC recordings that featured Tunes from 1970-1974. It was reported that more BBC shows were out there... but, it still a shock to see a Four CD Box set available in 2007 with all this Music (69 TRACKS)!!!

Firstly all of the Expanded "Heyday" is included here, but there is so much more: a December 67 Session with Judy Dyble, the "Full House" band Live featuring the Fire of Thompson & Swarb, through to the 73-74 Sessions of the "NIne" and "Rising" Lineups. There are a lot's of Rare tracks: "Marcie", "Night in the City", "You're Gonna Need My Help", "Violets of Dawn". "The Lady is a Tramp" & "Light My Fire" that were Highlights of the Bootleg Releases.

The Sound Quality gets Rough in spots, but it still holds up because of the Wealth of Great Music presented here. This is not the Place to start if you are new to the Music of Fairport Convention, But for me I do feel Lucky to own this Amazing Little BBC boxset of Fab, Fairport Live Music...FOUR STARS~!!!

Very Convenient Set If Not Absolutely Essential.......2007-04-24

This is a very convenient set. 4 CD's which have all the group BBC Sessions in one place. If there's a problem, it's that there isn't that much that's new for veteran fans. And of course Sandy Denny isn't on several tracks, which may discourage some. The '02 official release of 'Extended Heyday' filled many of the 'Sandy' needs for BBC Fairport stuff. Still though, the inclusion of a few new ones like the fine arrangement of Joni Mitchell's "Marcie," or oddity like Richard Thompson's fun lead on (of all things!) "The Lady is a Tramp," or the many early ones one Disc 4 are nice to see. The sound IS excellent, and notes are interesting in talking about how the recordings were made: great stuff despite (or perhaps even because of) little rehearsal time and cramped quarters. Very good IMO, if perhaps not totally essential, especially if you have all their '68-'75 material and some of the fairly available boots.

The Housemartins (Fourth Best Band in Hull) were Regular Vistors to the BBC'S Maida Vale Studios, Recording Seven Sessions as Well as Having their Glastonbury and Nottingham Concerts Broadcast. This Album was Compiled by Band Member Stan Cullimore and is a Wonderful Retrospective of their Time at the Beeb. This Album Includes Most of the Material Recorded for the BBC from the Beginning, Up Until the End of the Band's Brief but Brilliant Career. It's a Superb Snapshot of a Group of Artists Doing What They Do Best with a Minimum of Fuss. This is the First Time that Most of These Recordings have Been Available, and for Many Die Hard Fans, It's the Missing Piece of the Puzzle. There Are Songs Here that Never Made it Onto Record Or CD, as Well as a Generous Chunk of a Classic 1987 Live Set Recorded in Nottingham, and a Couple of Numbers from their Near Legendary Glastonbury Performance of 1986.

The Housemartins, one of the most popular Indie Band from 1985-1986 with sounds comparible to early Smiths, Aztc Camera and folky Billy Bragg with a political message in the lyrics. This Album displays their ability to perform Live as well as richly layer live acapella. Many new versions never heard before include on the LP. A must for all Beautiful South fans, Paul Heaton fans alike. First timers start with Best of... or London 0 Hull 4. Throughout the album Paul Heaton shows off his great pipes and bravado, the band holds up well. "Caravan" is the Best Leftist Gospel you'll ever hear.

BBC Radio One host Andy Kershaw was so enthralled by the gripping music of Ted Hawkins that he detoured from a Nashville trip to find Hawkins in Los Angeles. In fact, Kershaw recorded the first two cuts here in 1986 in Hawkins's Inglewood home and the next four were taped at LA's Sunset Marquis hotel two months later. The remainder of these 19 songs are culled from three Kershaw radio shows dating from October 1986 to August 1989. These are all solo-acoustic numbers, and this setting is the best way to appreciate Hawkins's matchless blend of soul, folk, country, and blues. On the whole, this doesn't quite match the intensity of the 1994 recordings collected on The Final Tour, but it offers a few of its own unique charms. Hawkins brings to life the cheatin' song "Daytime Friends," a 1977 No. 1 country hit for Kenny Rogers and revisits Doris Troy's 1963 soul classic "Just One Look." In addition, the final five songs are lesser-known Hawkins originals, including the childlike "Dollar Tree" and a couple of simple but passionately delivered love songs. --Marc Greilsamer

A unique voice.......2002-04-23

This album is amazing; simply Ted Hawkins with his very rudimentary solo quitar accompaniment. I gather most cuts were recorded at a residence or in radio studios. Nonetheless, the sound quauty is good and the performances come across as heartfelt and "authentic." This music cannot be easily categorized... blues, pop, soul... who cares. The feeling is there. The enunciation of the lyrics is another real strength. Every word comes through and many will break your heart. I do not know which songs Hawkins wrote. Many of them are familiar to me, but even if they are you feel you've heard them for them first time. I bought some other Ted Hawkins albums, some with musician backup and studio recording, but this one comes closest to what is unique about this performer. A cross between Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Sam Cooke, a capella, if you can imagine that.

Soulful & Stunning.......2002-03-05

Where do I begin with the praise for this amazing singer? Should i tell you that it brings tears to my eyes? That I get choked up at the sheer beauty, soulfulness, and unparallelled musicality of Ted Hawkins?

If you love soulful singers, you need this album in your life. The comparisons with Sam Cooke are no b.s. Ted Hawkins was touched by God. There are only a small handful of singers in this category. Some of them: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline.

Tony Blair's Favorite Band***...........2007-01-02

...which, if nothing else, probably is an indication that Blair DID inhale in college. Too bad he couldn't have been Bush's roommate. He could have put the needle down on "Mouthful of Grass" and mellowed George W. right out..

This cd seems a bit late arriving in more ways than one, but it's a nice reminder of what an underrated group Free was---tignt as the sheets on a Marine's bed, but always a great prescription for tension reduction.

Disc One is the real winner here. Disc Two is about as useful as wisdom teeth. They could just as well have put "Free Live" into the package and provided some indication of what the group really sounded like live. Disc Two is worth about one star. Since it's so poorly recorded, it's just extra baggage.

But Disc One has the goods. There's plenty of material from the second studio album, simply titled "Free", which was full of great stuff... "Woman" , "I'll Be Creepin'", &"Trouble on Double Time" are as good as anything Free ever recorded. "Mouthful of Grass" is so pastorally laid back that it nearly sounds like Fairport Convention. "Over the Green Hills" is Rodgers purest sounding vocal.

The rhythm section of Kirke and Fraser shines throughout, and of course Kossoff is well...Kossoff. Nobody approaches him as a string bender except for possibly Robin Trower--who late in the 70's was at times blatantly copying the Free sound... (check out Trower's "Road to Freedom" and "River" if you don't believe it.)
Everybody knows that Lynyrd Skynyrd borrowed heavily from Free, and so many vocalists imitated Paul Rogers that it isn't funny.

In conclusion: despite the weak second disk, this is worth purchasing. If you don't believe me, ask the PM.

*** Free is Blair's favorite band according to "Mojo" magazine, anyway. He was born in '53, so it kind of makes sense. He would have been 17 when "All Right Now" came out.

Captures Free in their uncontrolled glory.......2006-12-28

The reviewer who criticized the sound quality of Disk 2 is not wrong. It sounds like it was taken from a small home recorder in the back of the hall. However, for Free fans, Kossoff's frenzied, nearly out of control, playing on their rave-up "The Hunter" is worth the second rate audio. I am very glad they included it and very pleased with the rest of the collection - after I adjusted to the sound quality. If you want great audio and a super introduction to this great and unique band, get the two CD best of collection, Molten Gold. Perhaps we would agree that is for fans and collectors only.

Hit and Miss for Free.......2006-12-13

This 2cd set is kind of disappointing. The 1st CD has good sound -it is somewhat stereo and contains alternate cuts of Free but none come from their last 3 albums. The 2nd CD is very disappointing. It is a live recording which sounds like a bad bootleg. The sound is muffled in a lot of places and hard to hear clearly. They should have left this one out. There is even the sound of a phone ringing or a alarm in the background on a couple of the cuts. Free fans--just get this for the 1st cd--the other is very very bad. Where are the cuts from the last lineup of Free--are they out there-Hearbreaker, Catch a Train etc?

a great collection of live yardbirds classics.......2005-07-07

this is a great collection of classic yardbirds. on some of the songs, the guitars are somewhat muddy, but other than that, it's a timeless piece of rock history. too much monkey buisness is mindblowing, jeffs guitarwork is great. On little games, i think that there was too much reverb as opposed to the studio version. regardless, this is a great collection of live recordings. i don't know if this would be a good first yardbirds cd, but it's deffinately essential.

Depending on your taste,this just may be the best BBC collection of tunes ever released.Recorded during several of the band's appearances on the BBC between 1965-68.A total of 26 tracks,with 20 featuring Jeff Beck and 6 featuring Jimmy Page.Sorry,no Clapton.'...BBC' has an excellent choice of tunes,including slightly different versions of "I Ain't Got You","I Wish You Would",their signature song "Heart Full Of Soul",the foot-stomping "I'm A Man","Evil Hearted You","Train Kept A Rollin'" any my ultimate Yardbirds favorite "Over,Under,Sideways,Down".Only downside of 'BBC...' is the announcer yapping between every single tune.Someone maybe should've edited at least some of that out.I would still highly recommend this CD.

Best BBC Album Ever.......2003-11-20

That's right, this is the greatest BBC album by any rock band ever, and not just because it contains a whopping 26 songs. It epitomizes the Beck-era Yardbirds better than any other album. We have 20 tracks with Jeff and 6 with Jimmy Page. I'll say that at least 90% of these songs are killer, with the exception of a few duds ("Baby Scratch My Back", "Hang On Sloopy").
The earliest session here was recorded just weeks after Jeff joined the band in March of '65. Incidentally, the liner notes say that there was a session with Clapton recorded in '64, but it mysteriously got 'lost'. Anyway, "I Ain't Got You", "For Your Love" and "I'm Not Talkin'" are all outstanding bluesy jams that are very concise and to-the-point. That riff on "I'm Not Talkin'" is a killer, too. Equally impressive is "I Ain't Done Wrong", a shattering blues tune fuelled by the explosive rhythm section of Samwell-Smith and McCarty. And check out the way that they speed things up and go crazy in the middle of the song. Unbelievable.
But the one that really steals the show is the totally scorching version of "Too Much Monkey Business", in which Jeff manages to create a solo that defines the term 'rock 'n roll', electrifying the phrases in a way that leaves poor ol' Chuck Berry in the dust. And it's even better than the version that they recorded with Clapton on FIVE LIVE YARDBIRDS.
The Yardbirds also do a country song here, "Love Me Like I Love You", which is good. But after all, it's country, so don't expect a whole lot of fire and intensity. Then there's your basic blues standards like "I'm A Man", "Smokestack Lightning" and "Train Kept A-Rollin'", all of which are pretty good. However, their cover of The McCoys' "Hang On Sloopy" is a real disappointment. Same goes for "Baby Scratch My Back", in which Relf sounds like he's making up the corny lyrics right there on the spot. Good guitar work from Jeff though. Speaking of which, there's "The Sun Is Shining", which contains the most breath-taking slide guitar that I've ever heard in my life, courtesy of Mr. Beck. To say that it amazes me is to say nothing. And I think that Beck even sings it, too, but I'm not certain. The Elmore James chestnut "Dust My Broom" is given a stunning treatment here, with some POUNDING bass and Relf delivering some marvelous harmonica. And once again, Beck is totally amazing! Too bad that none of the old blues masters ever played with that kind of power and intensity.
The Page sessions are equally excellent. The cover of Dylan's "Most Likely You'll Go Your Way" is wonderful, and Relf's voice here even sounds a lot like Dylan's, believe it or not. "Little Games" is simply too awesome for me to express in words. I mean it! I don't know what it is about this song that hypnotizes me and fills me with rapture. The mammoth bass, Page's fuzz-drenched guitar and Relf's lyrics about growing up and throwing away his toys are simply incredible. "Drinking Muddy Water", the band's re-working of "Rollin' And Tumblin'", is blues excellence. "Think About It" has one of the most addictive choruses that I've ever heard, but Page's timid solo is total crap and ultimately goes nowhere. However, that is not the case on "Goodnight Sweet Josephine", in which he delivers one of his best solos ever, along with those oh so wonderful vocals. And "My Baby" is basically just average.

So this CD is definitely worth buying for any guitar lover, or any lover of great music in general. It is timeless.

Good alternate versions and rarities.......2002-05-24

This c.d. collects performances the Yardbirds recorded for BBC radio programs between 1965 and 1968, and features mainly the Jeff Beck line-up, and concludes with six numbers from the Jimmy Page line-up. It's not just of historical interest for serious Yardbirds fans -- there's lots of great performances here, along with versions of songs signficantly different from previously available versions, and a few numbers that are only available on this collection (or other versions of this collection). There are other c.d.'s that have these recordings, but I like this one because it preserves the original interviews aired with these performances, which provide some insight into the group, as well as humor and a good mid/mod 60's vibe.

As far as the music, Beck sounds a little tenuous on his first session, and he apparently left his fuzzbox at home, so we get a jangly version of "I'm not talking" completely unlike the proto-metal studio version. Beck's soloing is sharper(and louder!) on subsequent classics like "Shapes of things," "Over, under, sideways, down" and "You're a better man than I," and especially on "Too much monkey business" (dig those descending runs!). You also get a fair number of reworkings of some of their "Roger the Engineer" era songs with different lyrics. Page's first appearance is as a session bassist on "Smokestack Lightning." If you listen closely, you'll notice that the bass line he plays is the riff that became the basis for Led Zep's "How many more times"! After Page takes over the lead guitar duties, you get a pretty good Dylan cover, an energetic, thrilling version of "Little games" and a slow, spooky version of "Think about it," the Page-era Yardbirds' best rocker, which features a solo Page would later use for "Dazed and confused." Speaking of "Dazed and confused," (or "I'm confused") supposedly a BBC version of this song exists but it's not on here. Also missing is a second version of "Shapes of Things" that is present on other releases of the Yardbirds' BBC material. Otherwise, this is the stuff!

Radio Rave Up.......2001-12-15

Although this wonderful collection of BBC Yardbirds recordings is more for the collector than the novice fan, it wouldn't do anyone harm to check it out, especially if you dig sixties rock. The Yardbirds were innovators on many levels, not least the development of the electric guitar, and what makes this compilation so fascinating is how it allows the listener to follow their development from a daredevil R&B band to psychedelic pioneers. As the band never recorded for the Beeb with Clapton in the lineup, the CD kicks off with Jeff Beck on lead guitar. The versions of "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul," "Evil Hearted You," "Still I'm Sad" and "Over Under Sideways Down" aren't too different from the records (although the sound quality is much worse), but Beck lets rip on a sizzling version of "Too Much Monkey Business" that puts the cut on FIVE LIVE to shame. Plus, you can't argue with two different takes of the almighty "Shapes of Things." Beck also sparkles on "Train Kept A Rollin'," "I'm Not Talking" and "The Sun Is Shining," although his lead vocal on the latter is fairly lame. Keith Relf dominates the cavalry charge romps through "I Wish You Would" and "I'm A Man" with his breathless vocals and surging harmonica, and the band as a whole sounds tight and committed. Jimmy Page shows up on the last six tracks, though sadly his and Beck's dual guitar strut through the awesome "Happenings 10 Years Time Ago" was not recorded for the Beeb. Page's sloppy playing on "Little Games" actually gives the flimsy song a much needed edge. This fire of the band's four-piece lineup is captured best burning through "Drinking Muddy Water" and "Think About It." "Goodnight Sweet Josephine" is pap that doesn't improve in a live setting and "My Baby" is a capable version of the Garnett Mimms classic with a strong Relf vocal. One oddity is the Yardbirds' au go go interpretation of Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way", with Page jangling away on the 12-string. My only real quibble with this set is the band's BBC recording of "Dazed and Confused" was inexplicably omitted. Instead there's a slew of archival interviews that range from intriguing (comments from Relf and Samwell-Smith) to embarassing (someone should have cut Brian Matthew's condescending joke intro to "You're A Better Man Than I"). Ira Robbins' liner notes are adequate, but his prose lacks the joie de vivre of Parke Puterbaugh, much less Cub Koda. No pictures either. In summary, this is a dignfied presentation of a great period in time when you (well, British fans) could hear great rock bands perform live on the radio. It's not as bracing as Hendrix's magnificent RADIO ONE, but it's certainly more comprehensive than the BBC sets from the Who or the Beatles.

This is their third live release, mostly recorded in July 1978. It is in effect a concert version of the self-titled debut album. Also included as a bonus is a 12-minute version of 'Tunnel Of Love' from 1981 which is unavailable elsewhere. Windsong. 1995.

Intimate look.......2007-05-30

"Live at the BBC" was the final album on Mark Knopfler's contract for Dire Straits, and it was the third completely live album to be released by the band (first being Alchemy and second On the Night). This album consists of eight songs, the first seven recorded in 1978 and the eighth in 1981.

I must admit that I was not a fan of this album on first hearing, but I grow fonder of it with every listen. The performances are simply the songs from the studio albums, but they carry that live feel that Knopfler feeds off of - they aren't just lifted off the records and played over. I find these recordings to be particularly enjoyable due to Knopfler's shy and brief descriptions and introductions for each song. To hear Knopfler describe a song as a "strange idea" always makes me chuckle.

The liner booklet is sans lyrics but includes a nice retrospective, two-page history of the band and brief information regarding these recordings, written by Charlie Gillett in 1995. It also includes one picture of each band member. The overall album art flows well, consisting mainly of sepia-tone and grayscale themes (if that's important to someone like you, or like me).

My favourite tracks, out of eight, are "What's the Matter Baby?," "Wild West End," and "Down to the Waterline." "What's the Matter Baby?" was co-written by Knopfler's brother David, but it was never officially released on a studio album, which is a shame because it's a good song.

Overall, this is a stripped-down recording, laid back and you could really picture any of these songs played in places that Knopfler has haunted over the years. It's not the greatest live album ever or the best release from Dire Straits but it provides a more intimate look into the then-four man band before they were famous.

Personally, this is one of my favorite CDs! I can listen to it over and over and never get sick of it. I also like these versions better than their studio counterparts. The only thing I don't like is that it's so short!

Great Live Album from the Straits.......2006-10-28

The Dire Straits have put out two other live recordings, and some would argue that this one was unnesessary to release. However, this is a great live recording of their early days that showcases their original line up. For me, the highlights are a, very close to album version of "Sultans Of Swing," and "Tunnel Of Love." However, you feel a lot of energy from the band throughout, and this is definetly worth buying for any fan of the group. This sort of completes the trifecta of live releases for the band that showcases their early, middle, and late parts of their band history.

THE BEST LIVE CD OF ALL TIME BY ANY ROCK BAND.......2005-11-05

This is their best live cd, and probably the best live cd by
any rock band. I think everyone needs to get it, it has 5 amazing
songs, kicks off great with rocking DOWN TO THE WATERLINE, great
SIX BLADE KNIFE, the best, single SULTANS OF SWING, LIONS, and
my favorite song that really rocks TUNNEL OF LOVE! I'm not really
crazy about WATER OF LOVE, WILD WEST END, & WHAT'S THE MATTER
BABY but all three are pretty good, I listen to those once in
a while. But if so, listen to this CD over and over and over
again, because it is one of the best rock albums of all time!!
This version of the 3 TUNNEL OF LOVE is the best because it
ROCKS!!!! GREAT OPENING STUFF TOO!!!! YOU HAVE TO GET THIS
CD DEFINATELY 5 STARS, ON THE NIGHT IS TOO LONG AND SLOW.
ALCHEMY IS OK, TOO POPULAR.

This is the best!!!!! Every song from this is a masterpiece.
Tunnel of Love last track is really great!!! It rocks. Other
songs that rock are Down to the Waterline, and Sultans of Swing.
Get this masterpiece.

Unique recordings of a legendary band.......2007-05-14

During the three years or so covered on these two discs, Fleetwood Mac evolved from being a blues band to being something else entirely, and they still had another four fraught years to go before Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were to join the remaining members and turn them into a license for printing money. The original line-up that signed to Blue Horizon in 1967 stayed relatively stable during these three years but apparently Jeremy Spencer's unwillingness to collaborate with Peter Green on his boss's material meant that a third guitarist was drafted into the band.

Eighteen-year old Danny Kirwan from the band Boilerhouse joined in August 1968, and made his BBC debut later that month with a live broadcast for the Radio One O'Clock Club before a studio audience. By this time, the band's name had shortened to just Fleetwood Mac, and for the final two sessions represented on this disc (from July 1970 and January 1971) Peter Green was no longer in the line-up.

Changes in direction and line-up meant that a fair amount of material was amassed that did not see the light of day on their records and there are seventeen titles on this set otherwise unrecorded, plus two that were on a solo album by Jeremy Spencer (helped out by mates from the band).

The one and three-quarter hours here barely scratches the surface of the amount of material they recorded for the BBC, though there are plenty enough Elmore James covers, psychedelic blues and time-stopping flights of guitar to feed the soul. Twenty-one sessions between 1967 and 1971 are mentioned in Ken Garner's book of BBC sessions In Session Tonight, each probably averaging 20 minutes in playing time, though many of these may well not be preserved, at least not in the quality of those here, which is largely excellent and appears in the main to have come from single-track master tapes (Need Your Love So Bad is a notable exception).

Nearly all are session recordings, though the CD kicks off with a blistering seven and a half minute version of Rattlesnake Shake that was recorded live at the Paris Theatre in 1970 for the In Concert series; and includes two live performances from the Radio One O'Clock Club show mentioned earlier.

Liner notes are sparse, giving only first broadcast dates without specifying the programme involved, and unfortunately line-ups are limited to surnames, not specifying what instruments were played or who is singing lead. In Session Tonight helps out a little here but doesn't identify the mystery pianist who crops up on ten of the tracks. The most likely candidates are Jeremy Spencer, when not playing guitar, or Christine Perfect, who is credited with playing on Stop Messing Around, and appeared on some of their records of this period. Sweet Home Chicago comes from a World Service session they shared with Eddie Boyd, who may well be the pianist on that particular track.

BBC sessions are not synonymous with John Peel and though nineteen tracks come from his Top Gear programme, the rest were all recorded for shows presented by other disc-jockeys, including David Symonds and hairy cornflake Dave Lee Travis. One session, the only one to appear in full, was recorded for a Top Gear spin-off called First Gear, presented by producer John Walters while Peel was off on holiday. The theme for this month-long series was rock and roll and Fleetwood Mac came up with an appropriate mix of originals in the style of Buddy Holly and Elvis, as well as covers of songs by the Everlies, Big Joe Turner and Bobby Vee, the last being a tribute to Buddy written by his mother to the tune of Peggy Sue Got Married. Their blues roots were not forgotten, though, and the newest session included features Jeremy Spencer's version of Son House's Preachin'. This is the song that inspired Robert Johnson's Preachin' Blues, as also featured in a brilliant solo rendition by Peter Green in 1968 for Top Gear.

These double-sided discs feature a CD one one side and DVD-A on the other. I do not have DVD-A or surround sound equipment, but the DVD sides, played in standard DVD format through a digital amplifier, sounded clear and full of detail. I would have to query the benefits of 5.1 surround sound, though, as all the tracks were recorded and mixed to monaural single-track tape; and the claim on the sticker that the CD sides comprise "complete album in stereo" is clearly incorrect.

Great example of White Boy Blues.......2006-11-25

As a previous reviewer pointed out, there are (at least) two flavors of Fleetwood Mac, the most familiar being the "pop" Mac of the '80s and beyond.

But before the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and to a lesser extent, Christine McVie and Bob Welch... they were a pure "Chicago" style blues band. Guitarists Peter Green... Jeremy Spencer... Danny Kirwan... and the namesake rythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie - they were truly devoted to the blues genre. They, and several other "white boy blues" bands (John Mayall and Mike Bloomfield come immeditely to mind) proved their legitimacy, and were embraced by the "real" bluesmen of the era.

The guitarists knew their chops. (Peter Green, in particular, has become a living legend.) And Fleetwood and McVie have ALWAYS laid down the beat, whether it was "Sweet Home Chicago" or "Go Your Own Way."

This 2-CD set is "quasi live" at the BBC (recorded at a time when The Yardbirds, The Stones, The Beatles were also making similar recordings - talk about an era in music evolution!). I believe it's recorded in mono, but it sounds pretty good. The song selection contains Mac originals - "Rattlesnake Shake," "Albatross," etc. - novelty tunes like the Buddy-Holly-esque "Buddy's Song" and "Linda" - and a lot of covers of the standard blues repertoire.

Highly recommended for fans of (early) Fleetwood Mac or electric blues. (My own copy of this CD set has sentimental value, as I purchased it in London as a souvenir of a visit there.)

Heard only one cut, but oh man!.......2005-06-09

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and what it morphed into (they went condo) are two different planets. Just heard "Rattlesnake Shake" on the 2-disc BBC Live CD and I know I need to have this CD. I wouldn't touch the 80's+ Fleetwood Mac with a ten-foot pole, but Peter Green's original band is WAY underheard.
