Masked & Anonymous [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
OK, so the movie to which its attached has been denigrated by most of the critics whove reviewed it. The soundtrack itself is a marvel that stands just fine on its own. Start with the four tracks by Dylan himself, including bristling new versions of "Cold Irons Bound" and "Down in the Flood" recorded with his remarkable touring band. Add gospel heavyweights Shirley Caesar shouting "Gotta Serve Somebody" and the Dixie Hummingbirds offering country-soul salvation in "City of Gold." But these and performances by Los Lobos and the Grateful Dead are just a warm-up for the CDs more inspired third: Dylan covers by a variety of obscure international artists. Theres a Japanese language version of "My Back Pages" courtesy of the Magokoro Brothers , an Italian hip-hop take on "Like a Rolling Stone" ("Come Una Pietra Scalciata!") by Articolo 31), a beguiling, string-driven "One More Cup of Coffee" from Turkish pop star Sertab Erener, and a gentle, spoken-word "Most of the Time" by Swedish singer Sophie Zelmani. Oddly, this loopy, polyglot approach stands as a truer testament to Dylans genius than the atrocious dialogue (two snippets of which mar an otherwise fine album) or self-conscious artiness of the movie. --Keith Moerer

Prelude to the new King Crimson.......2007-05-08
This album was released in 1981 and is 38 minutes long.
This album was recorded just before Robert Fripp created the next version of King Crimson with Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, with Bill Buford returning, after Fripp thought the world was going to end and broke up the band in 1975.
Much of this album sounds a lot like what will appear on the next three King Crimson albums, Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair.
But, it isn't all King Crimson sounding. First off, it all instrumental (no vocals). And there is Andy Summer's influence and sound on many songs. Some of it might sound as if Discipline meets Ghost in the Machine (the Police album that came out right after this).
No "YAWN" here...Classic Frippian and Summerian for sure!.......2003-09-26
Wow. This is a lovely recording of some extremely Frippian Prog. You can definately hear Andy Summers' influences in the subtext. Yes, you have to be sort of predisposed to early 80's Experimental and Prog to appreciate this unit. If you listen to Fripp's King Crimson or any Andy Summers solo stuff, this will satisfy your need for more. Fripp's "Crafy" guitar style shows up here and the intricracies abound. Definately for the Prog efficianado and the 80's-style ambient lover.
:-Yawn-:.......2003-02-12
I bought a vynil copy of this album at a local used-record store not knowing what to expect. Since it was from 1982, I guessed that it would have a lot of the minimalist/contrapunctal type stuff that Fripp was into in that period. It does, but there doesn't seem to be very much variety in the pieces. In fact, the whole album seems to drag along with no real idea of it's own purpose. I think Fripp recorded this simply because he was in the studio with Summers. I strongly doubt that some of the pieces were even practiced beforehand.
There are a few "ambient"-style tracks thrown in for variety, but these pieces sound as though Fripp and Summers listened to a heap of old Eno records and tried to copy his style. That might be exactly what they did.
So I would say that if you are a Fripp completist, or really like his ticky-ticky guitar style of the early eighties, you will probably enjoy this disc. If not, you might find it aggravating. And DEFINETELY don't buy this based on a liking of king Crimson - Fripp outside of his band is a different player.
Lovely, Dark, Intense.......2002-05-10
This CD is difficult to characterize. In mucical terms, it is complex and was certainly ahead of its time upon its original release date. While heavy on Fripp, Summers adds unique voicings and his contributions to this work should not be underestimated. "Girl on a Swing" is perhaps an arrangement that summarizes the musical craftsmanship on the album.
A well-kept secret.......2001-10-18
Often overlooked, and most likely underrated, I Advance Masked is a true synergy of guitar duets. Far superior to its follow-up Bewitched, which was a bit overproduced and relied more on guitar synths--not that that's a bad thing, but in this context, the approach used on I Advance Masked was more effective. This recording shows Summers and Fripp truly inspired, brimming with ideas, and remarkably synchronized mentally as well as musically. My preferred track from this set is "Hardy Country," which I never tire of hearing.

Fire Him..........2006-03-03
Find the executive that made the decision to leave off the incredible version of "The Times They Are A Changin'" by that adorable young lady --- in favor of "My Back Pages" sung in Japanese --- and FIRE HIM!
This CD is great and at the price I paid ($4.00) from an Amazon partner I have no right to complain. But to me, that is one of the songs to be included in the CD. After all it was good enough to use in the trailer.....WHERE IS IT SONY/COLUMBIA?????
After being accustomed to hearing Bob sing his songs for so long, the differing versions by other artists took a little getting used to for me, but I kinda like them now. Plus the songs Bob does are terrific and "Dixie" and "Diamond Joe" are infectious - you'll find yourself singing or humming long after the song is over. Get this CD - a rare enjoyable soundtrack ... and at a good price too.
ATTENTION ALL YOU BOB DYLAN FACES! .......2005-12-14
Have you checked out this soundtrack? You should. Don't ask me about the movie because I haven't seen it. I do have this disc though, its pretty figgin' great. I was just listening to it this morning on my way to work and I couldn't help jammin' out. Dylan himself only performs about three songs, the greatest of those is a banjo riddled tune called DIAMOND JOE (yeah, its my new drinkin' anthem)the others are cool too.
The rest is DYLAN covers, but don't worry, it has been left to the proffesionals. These are some strange takes on Dylan favorites, but are sure to please even the most avid Dylanee. My personal favorite is Jerry Garcia doing a TALES OF YANKEE POWER that can't be beat.
This soundtrack is very chill, and so very cool. An easy five stars, and necessary if you have been scratching for a new Dylan fix.
Even if you don't dig Bob Dylan, you won't be able to deny the hippness of this disc. ROCK!
Dylan Grabbag.......2005-10-04
The Dylan cuts on this side are a good representation of what the Bard of Hibbing sounds like when you see him live these days-- a better representation than either "Love and Theft" or "Time Out of Mind", actually. Worth the price of admission is the version of "Down In The Flood"-- by far the best version of this song by anyone, anywhere. It is hard to get too excited about the rest of this hodgepodge, though. "My Back Pages" in Japanese reminds us that Dylan writes solid melodies, and not just lyrics. "A repectable version of "Gotta Serve Somebody", but I think of that song as being the equivalent in quality to "Knocking On Heaven's Door": okay because it's Dylan, but nothing special. The Greatful Dead do what they do to "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and Jerry Garcia covers "Senior (Tales Of Yankee Power)"-- a Dylan song that establishes once and for all that Dylan writes clunkers just like everybody else.
I wish there was a collection that documents what the present Dylan live show is like. For now, this is what we have. The live "Cold Irons Bound" is probably the next best thing on this, and can be downloaded at iTunes.
Blowin' like no wind............2005-02-16
For what it is, the CD makes for a good, but not great representation of the actual film soundtrack. The numerous Bob covers provide an appropriate backdrop to the film itself, but aren't necessarily all that interesting on their own - exceptions to that are clearly the material done by Jerry Garcia (Senor), the Grateful Dead (It's All Over Now Baby Blue), Los Lobos etc. That being said, these versions are available elsewhere and, for an old Deadhead with most of this material already, it just wasn't enough to entice me to buy the CD. Also, most notably, was the absence of Bob's "I'll Remember You" and a version of "Blowin' In the Wind" that goes into a totally new - yet again - unexplored, territory by Bob that I found incredibly moving at the end of the film. I probably would have been inclined to buy the CD for that song alone, but, alas, it was conspicuously missing from the mix. A quick word about the film. I would definitely recommend that it be seen. Bob has matured as an actor from his days of "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." I'm not saying that he's ready to do Shakespeare in the park, but he has real presence in the kind of role that he plays, and the music throughout is solid. The film is a bit disjointed and probably raises more questions than it answers. In the end, it conveys something that is a bit hard to put one's finger on and doesn't exactly convey what the movie was about. If you're comfortable with that sort of genre, in the sense that the film tends to work along Kurosawa or McCluhan-like lines, i.e. "the medium is the message," you'll probably find it appealing. Perhaps, more Zen and underground than some would like, but I found it worthwhile of at least one viewing. Best yet, don't miss seeing Bob and his superb band live any chance that you can - he's never been better.
Slightly uneven, but some nice material.......2004-12-14
A decent CD with some very good stuff, some okay stuff, some bad stuff. Don't buy it unless you're willing to fast forward about half the album!
Good:
On a Night Like This (Los Lobos) --- this song could have been written by Los Lobos! Lively, joyful.
Rap version of Like a Rolling Stone --- Okay, I was surprised at this one, but it's quite good.
Most of the Time(Sophie Zelmani) --- a sweet and innocent female version (but can you rhyme "sure" with "him")
Okay:
The Dylan performances, Grateful Dead, One More Cup of Coffee for the Road, City of Gold, Gotta Serve Somebody
Not so good:
The Japanese version of My Back Pages --- it could drive you crazy! I didn't like If You See Her, Say Hello

Album Description
Celebrated new-music ensemble eighth blackbird performs a provocative pairing of works evoking the origins of the universe on beginnings, its new CD for Cedille Records (Cedille Records CDR 90000 076). The pioneering sextet offers the world-premiere recording of Daniel Kellogg's Divinum Mysterium, a new work inspired by a medieval Latin chant, and George Crumb's venerable Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), inspired by sounds of the humpback whale. Producer-engineer is Grammy Award-winner Judith Sherman. "Both pieces celebrate the fact that we live, that the universe does exist," the ensemble writes in the CD booklet. Both move from the violence of creation "to joyful celebration and tender contemplation."

A MUST FOR DEBORAH GIBSON FANS.......2001-03-14
In all honesty I only purchased this CD because it featured Deborah Gibson. Having been a fan of Deborah's since way back, it was a must for me. Living in the UK we don't hear much about Deborah. It was only when browsing at [the internet] that I saw this CD and purchased it immediately. There are 5 songs featuring Deborah, all of which are excellent, although I am perhaps slightly biased. The only downside to this CD is that the bonus tracks (alternative versions of the brilliant "What makes a hero" and " Now that I have you" Produced by Tony Moran) are not performed by Deborah Gibson & Ruben Gomez. All in all this is an excellent listen and certainly a must for ALL Deborah Gibson fans.
Don't bother.......2001-01-13
This CD is totally not worth spending the money on. I hope it was just a recording made for fun--the lyrics alone are pretty horrible. The rhyme scheme is simplistic (e.g. "He's Zorro! Zorro! Defending the poor with each blow! Each blow!", and so on). It's a shame that some of the people on this CD wasted their talents on mediocre material.
Z SOARS!.......2000-10-27
This CD is the stuff Tony's are made of. The lyrics move you to incredible emotions. The music is inspiring. The voices, simply the best.
This play needs to get to Broadway NOW!
This will be a collector's edition and a CD to treasure for years to come.
Deborah Gibson's Sophomore Cast Recording - A Smash!.......2000-07-30
Deborah Gibson first came up with a cast recording during the early nineties via Grease! belting out a unique version of "Hopelessly Devoted To You", a really charming rendition.... This time, she's back with the Zorro inspired musical and she's better than ever! Her voice sounding so crisp and clear, often melodic. This is a real treat to all her fans with exceptional songs like "What Makes A Hero", "His Face" and "Everything But Love". Also, her duets with Roberto Blades and Ruben Gomez stands out in this musical. In general, this CD is above average.
The CD is typical Broadway style Music.......1999-10-15
This CD the concept recording for "Z" is wonderful It is typical Broadway style music that is invigorating and very energetic. I am part of the Premiere Cast and believe that this is a show worth seeing. The concept recording was very well done and the show promises much much more.

Album Description
Volume Six of Bridge's Grammy-winning George Crumb Edition features the premiere recording of the composer's only work for solo organ, the roof-raising "Pastoral Drone." Organist Gregory D'Agostino, quite literally pulls out all of the stops in Crumb's "in your face" essay. Also featured on this CD is the first digital recording of Crumb's seminal orchestral masterpiece, "Echoes of Time and the River." Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1968, "Echoes of Time and the Rive," is among Crumb's most personal scores, with its four movements ranging from intimate chamber muisc to electrifying tutti outbursts. Bridge Records is also pleased to re-issue, for the first time on CD, legendary mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani's reading of Crumb's "Lux Aeterna." DeGaetani's relationship with Crumb inspired many of his finest scores ("Ancient Voices of Children," "Night of the Four Moons," etc.), and this re-mastered recording, at long last, restores her masterful performance to the catalog. Piano virtuoso Robert Shannon continues his work on this series with a powerful performance of "Gnomic Variations," and is joined by violinist Gregory Fulkerson for Crumb's eerily beautiful "Four Nocturnes."
Customer Reviews:
Not a review, just a recommendation.......2003-11-04
Crumb's music is not verbally describable except in technical, objective terms. Since this cd had no reviews, I would like to point out to prospective Crumb buyers who are just getting familiar with his music: If you enjoyed Crumb Edition #5 on Bridge, then you will also enjoy this recording. The music is not
"the same" but is equally interesting and enjoyable. For those
of you who bought "Quest" as their first Crumb cd, and were perhaps disappointed, I would like to point out that "Quest"is the
weakest of the Bridge editions, and would highly recommend all other cds in the series as a good second choice.
