5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU.......2007-01-23

THis was a gift for my father and he was very impressed with the quality and speedy delivery. Thanks again!

5 out of 5 stars The Original Made Even Better, Who Would Have Thunk it was Possible?.......2006-07-22

This is one of my favorite Donovan albums, with "Young Girl Blues," being right up there as one of my favorite Donovan songs, if not my favorite. It's a sad, weepy song that never fails to move me. "Writer in the Sun" is another song like that. One can only wonder if Donovan was thinking about bowing out of the music business, because of the problems he was having getting "Superman" and "Yellow" released in the UK. Seems those Pye guys just didn't want to let go of their number one moneymaker.

"Mellow Yellow" was a huge hit and how can you not like that song. "Sand and Foam" written, while Don was in Mexico, is absolutely beautiful. I just love this whole record, it was and is a masterpiece that laid the groundwork for some many rock and roll greats who followed. If you are into rock and roll, you've gotta have this as "Mellow Yellow" is one of those important rock records that will never die.

And then you add in the extra songs on this disc, "Superlungs" they way it was meant to be heard. The neat alternate version of "Writer in the Sun," "Epistle to Dippy," Donovan's letter in song to a lost friend and more. This is a super package. The originally "Mellow Yellow" made even better, who would've thunk it was possible?

5 out of 5 stars Donovan becomes eclectic with fourth LP.......2006-06-17

Donovan's fourth album, originally released in 1967, was his second with producer Mickie Most and arranger John Cameron, and though it featured the flower-power light-psych title anthem, it also reached back past the previous "Sunshine Superman" LP to Donovan's folk and jazz roots. When released, its original ten tracks comprised Donovan's most eclectic collection to date, ranging from the solo folk tunes "Sand and Foam" and "Young Girl Blues," to the ornate arrangement of "Hampstead Incident," the bohemian jazz of "Bleak City Woman" and "The Observation," and the swinging, name-checking pop of "Sunny South Kensington."

Much of this material was written during a tumultuous period in 1966 that saw Donovan separating from (and then being sued by) his initial management team, embargoed from releasing new material in the UK, and unable to promote his work in the US. Melancholy, lethargy and the pain of personal and professional setbacks permeate the lyrics. The dispirited artist stoked his artistic muse in Greece and Mexico, and spent downtime preparing material with his producer and arranger. Once back in the studio the sessions produced sophisticated, eclectic material in short order.

EMI's reissue doubles the original ten tracks with bonuses that include the single sides "Epistle to Dippy" (in both it's original electric-guitar version and a violin-based alternative), the island-styled zen koan "There is a Mountain," a second run at "Superlungs" that prominently features brass and guitar, and a quartet of songwriter demos that demonstrate the integral nature of John Cameron's arrangements for the album. This is a superb helping of Donovan's mix of folk, jazz, blues, pop and light psych, remastered in its original mono, with stereo for bonus tracks 13 and 15-20. 3 out of 5 stars I thought EMI would've mixed these into first-time stereo...NO WAY.......2006-04-03

Along with the first Procol Harum LP, these 1967 Donovan recordings are the last mono or rechanneled albums issued. Three tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow original LPs (Sunshine Superman, Season Of The Witch and Sunny South Kensington) have been mixed into stereo. Strangely, only Sunshine Superman is in stereo here....the other two are mono!

I'm very disappointed that they did NOT remixe Writer In The Sun, San And Foam, The Observation, Bleak City Woman, House Of Jansch, Young Girl Blues, Museum, or Hampstead Incident into stereo.

To my ears, these tracks sound no better than the US Epic original CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, the ultimate version of this classic.......2006-01-29

In a review of an import version of "Mellow Yellow" a year or so ago I wished for a proper remastering with bonus tracks to be released; this has finally happened and so here is the updated review, which is nothing but superlative. "Mellow Yellow" followed up on the quality of the previous masterpiece "Sunshine Superman" and is nearly its equal; although the Indian influence is mostly absent (save for the closing "Sunny South Kensington", which turns out to have been from the "Sunshine" sessions"), the sophisticated jazz/folk/classical arrangements are just as exquisite and particularly noteworthy tracks include the title cut, "Young Girl Blues", "Sand And Foam", "Hampstead Incident" and "Writer In The Sun". The sound quality, as on "Sunshine Superman", is now rich and full, and the bonus cuts fit perfectly with the tone of the album; of particular interest is the jazzy version of "Superlungs" and the alternate "Epistle To Dippy", both of which should have made the album in place of say, "Bleak City Woman". But now you get all the tracks, and can program them in any way you please; the liner notes are informative and this is now the definitive version of the album, one that has stood the test of time very well; Donovan's vocals here are especially resonant and beautiful.

Donovan, the British folkie and poor man's Bob Dylan best known for '60s and '70s Flower Power opuses like "Season of the Witch" and "Sunshine Superman," takes a slightly self-indulgent but utterly intriguing turn here on his first album in eight years. Backed by a deft band of ace session musicians, Donovan serves up a spacey, electronica-laden tribute to one of his most enduring influences: the Beat poets (Ginsberg, Burroughs, et. al.) of yesteryear. A few of these cuts, like "Two Lovers," "Yin My Yang," and "The Question," are merely dazzling word play set to hot licks. But others--"Poor Man's Sunshine," "Lord of the Universe," and "Do Not Go Gentle" (a hip-hoppish variation on a famous Dylan Thomas poem)--resonate with the eerie power of spacey elevator music from U2's loopy Zooropa phase while briefly showcasing Donovan in all the whispery, flower-draped splendor of his salad days. -- Bob Allen

Album Description

That shimmering, intimate voice . . . the poetic, seductive lyrics . . . the dreamy, hazy music that surrounds them . . . From folksinger to flower-child to timeless musical poet, Donovan and his distinctive, magical songs have become familiar to decades of music fans since the early Sixties through hit singles like "Mellow Yellow," "Sunshine Superman," "The Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Catch the Wind," "Colours," "There is a Mountain" and "Atlantis," in TV and movie soundtracks and commercials, and on a precious, infrequent trickle of new releases.

"Beat Café" is the first new Donovan CD for grown-ups since 1996's "Sutras" ("The Pied Piper," a children's CD, was issued in 2002). While "Sutras," produced and released by Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mick Jagger) emphasized Donovan's folk roots, "Beat Café" is an extension of the heady rock/folk/pop/jazz/blues/world music brew that has become Donovan's trademark.

To capture the spirit of the Bohemian café happenings dating back to 1840s Paris that combined philosophy, poetry and free thought and inspired this CD, Donovan enlisted multiple Grammy-winner John Chelew (Blind Boys of Alabama, Richard Thompson, John Hiatt) as producer and keyboardist and the world-class rhythm section of folk/jazz double bassist and longtime Donovan accompanist Danny Thompson (Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, The Pentangle, John Martyn) and drummer/percussionist Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, George Harrison, many more). Applying a "no fixed arrangements" approach to foster the proper mood of spontaneity, Donovan (vocals, guitars) and his cohorts have created a lusciously atmospheric collection of eleven new original Donovan compositions plus a cover of the folk standard "The Cuckoo."

This "beat café" of the mind is a sensuous, smoky den of fevered seduction (the hypnotic "Love Floats," "Yin My Yang," "Two Lovers," "Whirlwind"), jazzy, finger-snapping hipness ("Poorman's Sunshine" and the title song), death-mocking blues ("Lord of the Universe"), and gentle spirituality ("Shambhala," "Do Not Go Gentle," the latter song an adaptation of Dylan Thomas's famous poem). The contemporary production values meld mystic chants, teasing wordplay, tender meditations and warm musical telepathy into a reaffirmation of Donovan's status as a unique and vibrant musical visionary.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-07-05

I heard a cut over the radio, and thought it was worth looking into. Don't waste your money on this one. Very poppy, stupid lyrics, totally uninspiring. What happened to the artist who tried "To Catch the Wind?"
I guess he got old and boring. What a shame!

4 out of 5 stars Very, Very Cool.......2006-03-24

Since "Sutras" his astounding comeback album rated five stars, I have to rate this one only four stars as it's not QUITE as good (and half stars aren't allowed). But make no mistake, it's still very, very cool.

It's so amazing that Donovan is back and sounds as good as he does, 40 years after I first discovered him. And he's not some nostalgia act; he's doing important new groundbreaking work! He sounds great too.

"Beat Cafe" finds him swaggering with an acoustic trio in deliberately "hip" arrangements which, in lesser hands, could have been cloying. But this is never overplayed, never broad, never tongue-in-cheek -- just a very relaxed set of neo-beatnik grooves which he, alone among his contemporaries, has the cachet to perform with authenticity.

Did I mention cool?

5 out of 5 stars Donovan gets sexy!.......2006-02-06

I first listened to this CD with my wife in the car as we were driving the Mass Pike on a sunny Saturday morning, heading for Maine. I didn't quite know what to expect this trip, but I was not prepared for (and yet pleasantly surprised by) this deeply sensual set of tracks. Just amazing! Donovan can still turn it on, approaching 60, and his voice is as timeless as ever, perhaps even smoother in his late middle age than ever before. "Love Floats," the lead-off track, is an outright seduction; "Yin My Yang" sounds like a Tao-themed come-on ('twould make Confucius blush!); "The Question" is groovy and mystical with the Hammond B-3 low and secretive in the mix.

Suffice it to say that my wife and I could not stop touching each other while this CD was on, and were it possible for us to pull over and make hot, passionate love before continuing on, we'd have left the key turned to Accessory so that this music could have continued contributing to the sexy mood. Lastly, I'll add this--if you bring home a date and put this album on, and you *aren't* making breakfast for them the next morning, something went dreadfully wrong! Danny Thompson's sinuous bass work and Jim Keltner's tasteful drumming keep the whole thing moving along to your inevitable climax...pick it up today.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Cool and Tripper Vibe.......2005-09-28

Oooooh yeah...man. This is the good stuff. After hours and into the dawn. With or without shades.
Donovan's Temple is the place to be.
Thank you and...could we fill it up again? Soon?
Stay Free.

5 out of 5 stars High-Water Mark for Donovan.......2005-08-08

Sunshine Superman morphs into Bohemian Batman on this superb outing by Donovan. When I heard about the concept of this album -- Donovan trying to recreate the sound and ambiance of Soho beat cafe circa 1962 -- I thought it sounded like a desperate gimmick by a fading rock superstar. But it works big time, thanks in no small part to the dream-team support of accoustic bassist Danny Thompson (Richard Thompson, Pentangle) and solo-Beatles drummer Jim Keltner, who swing and sizzle along with Donovan's acoustic guitar grooves. The only thing that doesn't really work is the recitation of Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle," (but it is a great theme for the record and one that Donovan seems to be taking to heart). Every other track on the album is a gem. This is Don's best album since the criminally overlooked Cosmic Wheels back in the early 1970s, and possibly the best of his 40-year career. I can't think of a single one my many favorite rock artists from the 1960s or 1970s (many of whom are still recording and performing) of whom I can say they trumped their catalog at close to age 60! Watch out world -- The Hurdy Gurdy Man is still crankin'!

2 out of 5 stars Another ingenious package from Collectables..........2005-06-27

"Wear Your Love Like Heaven" was originally issued as one disc in the 2-record set "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden," Donovan's fifth US album, which is superb and available on both Collector's Choice (though I haven't heard their transfer) and Beat Goes On. "Mellow Yellow" has been remastered and expanded by EMI (UK) with numerous bonus tracks. Why would Collectables take half of a 2-record set and package it with another album (in less than breath-taking sound, I should add)? One could point out that Epic, or Donovan, also issued the 2 halves of "Gift" seperately back in 1967, when double albums were still quite rare (there was "Blonde On Blonde," and...?). If you care enough to be investigating Donovan's cd catalog, I advise getting the aforementioned "Gift" (which easily fits on one cd) and the EMI "Mellow Yellow" and skip this redundant, rather cheesy package. The 2 stars are for the inane concept - the music is, if not Donovan's greatest, quite fine and a worthy addition to a collection that might start with "Sunshine Superman," or "Greatest Hits" (expanded) - you'll be hooked, and wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Young Girl Blues, Mellow Yellows, Alizarian Crimsons.......2005-02-02

In a sense, Donovan shares a similar fate with Jose Feliciano - they are remembered by the unsuspecting masses (and more especially, the quick-fix radio programmers) for their one-off top-40 "novelty" hits; "Feliz Navidad" for Jose and "Mellow Yellow" for Donovan as well as some others that might provoke a mighty cringe. It's a cryin shame because these guys are. or were, geniuses in their own right.
Mellow Yellow is not a bad song at all, but just give a listen to "Young Girl Blues", "The Observation", "Sand and Foam", "Sunny South Kensington", "Writer in The Sun", "House of Jansch" and the rest. Any one of those is a work to stand the test of time - and VERY different from one another.
The two records within this package differ in style but i think there is a kind of thread - a touch of jazz, unexpected rhythms and keyboards - that sets them apart from his other records. Wear Your Love Like Heaven is a lot "lighter" in feel and makes a nice flower-power compliment to the beatnik undertones of of Mellow Yellow. For me, "Sun", "Mad John's Escape", "Oh Gosh" and "The Land of Doesn't Have to Be" would have fit well if they sprung up in the poppy field of the Mellow disc. Don't miss it if you're a Donovan fan put off by the radio dross.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece (Swinging London with a touch of psycadelia).......2002-01-01

Mellow Yellow has to be my favorite Donovan album (tied with 'Hurdy Gurdy Man', 'Sunshine Superman', and 'Donovan') Some very enjoyable songs. Really showcases his work as a writer and guitarist (Interestingly, there are some great bass lines on this album) without becoming too flowery (Not that there's anything wrong with that). A few of the stand-out tracks are 'Mellow Yellow', 'Sand and Foam', 'the Observation', 'Bleak City Woman', 'Young Girl Blues', 'Museum' and 'Sunny South Kensington'. Though, all the tracks are superb. The other 10 tracks are the 'Wear Your Love Like Heaven' LP (Part one of 'A Gift From a Flower To a Garden'). Great if you're a big Donovan fan, some people might get lost in the [genius] folk flower power style Donovan did so well.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars One for the Hipsters, One for the Hippies.......2001-02-21

This release of Mellow Yellow finally makes available all of Donovan's Mickie Most-produced albums from the 1960's-- the material for which he is best known-- and it took four record labels to do it! Mellow Yellow was a US-only album pieced together from singles, bits and pieces, and songs left off the US version of Sunshine Superman, but the songs are remarkably cohesive- aside from the title track, which is Donovan as his most bubblegummish and which contributed to his largely undeserved reputation as a callow flyweight. Aside from that, we have a couple of those achingly pretty ballads that Donovan seemed to be able to write so easily and a series of snapshots of the strange, fascinating people to be found at coffee shops and wild parties in swinging London. Donovan presents a fusion of jazzy, folky music, the sort of swinging blend that Pentangle- who were just getting started as this album was being recorded- would go on to perfect. And most of the bass here is played by Pentangle's Danny Thompson, to my mind one of the greatest bass players in the history of rock. Jimmy Page also pops up in these sessions- unfortunately, musician credits are not given- and it's worth noting that the introduction to "Hampstead Incident" sounds remarkably like a slowed-down version of the introduction to "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," recorded by Led Zeppelin the following year. This is a smart, sophisticated album- it's for the hipsters, not the hippies.

Sound quality is problematic. Donovan's voice and guitar, as well as many other instruments, are sharp and clear, while other instruments- particularly the brass and, where it appears, the electric bass- are muddy-sounding. It's my guess that Most patched overdubs of inferior quality onto the main performances and turned in the whole thing as a package, making the term "original master tapes" less than meaningful. This is the best-sounding version of this material that I've heard, beating the reproduction in both the Troubador box and the songs shared in common with BGO's version of Sunshine Superman, and I suspect it's the best we're going to get.

With Wear Your Love Like Heaven, flower power is in full blossom. As most of you must know, this album was half of a two-record set, A Gift From a Flower to a Garden, and that full collection has been reissued both by BGO in the UK and Collector's Choice in the US. That considered, I was expecting the pairing of Wear Your Love with Mellow Yellow to be an act of pointless redundancy. However, the sound quality here is absolutely super. I was perfectly happy with BGO's sound in the past (I haven't heard the Collector's Choice recording, but all of their releases that I have heard have been uniformly undistinguished), but from now on whenever I play this album I'll be playing this version- it has a much fuller dimension. There is no credit for the remastering and that's a pity, as the person responsible deserves to take a bow.

The Collectables label has greatly improved the quality of their packaging since their early years- they don't obscure a quarter of the cover art with their ugly logo anymore!- but the packaging in this case leaves much to be desired. The front cover art from the two albums is reduced to the size of postage stamps, and the black & white photo from the back cover of Mellow Yellow, with Donovan wearing that natty white suit, has been colorized and tinted yellow instead of brown. The lyrics and musician credits from Wear Your Love are reproduced inside, along with a brief overview of Donovan's career.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan at the absolute peak of his powers.......2004-12-30

It's a shame that "Mellow Yellow" is only available as an obscure import, or as a two-fer with the stylistically different "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", for it remains perhaps his greatest work, eclipsed perhaps only by "Sunshine Superman" with which it shares the most similarity. Donovan was at the absolute peak of his powers in late 1966 when he went into a London studio to record the ten tracks on this album. Having
re-invented himself and pioneered a new brand of psychedelia on "Sunshine Superman", the artist felt at ease to create an effortless set of poems set to music, ranging from acoustic folk (the mesmerising "Sand And Foam" and "Young Girl Blues") to epic baroque ("Hampstead Incident"), swing jazz experiments ("The Observation", "House Of Jansch"), drugged out Swinging London pop ("Mellow Yellow", "Museum", "Sunny South Kensington") and
a hearbreaking balladic paen to writer's block ("Writer In The Sun").

The lyrics are among the most incisive and edgy in the songwriter's entire career, capturing the moment when he was temporarily banned from recording in the USA due to contractual entanglements. Many of the songs have a depressed, resigned feel to them, capturing a sense of ennui that is only occasionally brightened by the singer's still optimistic view that things will change (and change they did). The music is colored by similar instrumentation to that of "Sunshine Superman", with flutes, string quartets, vibes, clarinets and other additions mixing jazz, folk and classical music with ease. The major difference between the two works is the absence of the Indian influence of sitars and tablas--save on the closing "Sunny South Kensington" (which is as perfect an encapsulation of late '66 UK pop as can be found)--which makes the album a bit less psychedelic than its predecessor but no less richly textured. The preoccupation with medeival and magical imagery is here refined from a straightforward storytelling (as on "Legend Of A Girl Child Linda" from "Superman") to a more subtle lyrical touch mixed in with modern-day themes ("Sand And Foam", "Hampstead Incident"). The musical climaxes are no less dramatic, and the only misstep appears to be the singer's fascination with disposable 20s jazz themes on "The Observation" and "Bleak City Woman".

In short, "Mellow Yellow" is an essential purchase, not only as a snapshot of the experimental, pioneering phase of UK pop in late '66/early '67, but as a consistently strong and timeless work in its own right. A domestic remaster (perhaps with bonus tracks of outtakes and the concurrent single "Epistle To Dippy"/"Preachin' Love", which fits right in with the style of the record) is sorely needed.
