Even one of the most misguided marketing campaigns in history couldn't obscure the sheer brilliance of this San Francisco-based quintet's self-titled 1967 debut. Guitarist Skip Spence was the original Jefferson Airplane's drummer, and lead guitarists Peter Lewis and Jerry Miller, bassist Bob Mosley, and drummer Don Stevenson were seasoned garage-band veterans. Everybody sang, everybody wrote songs, and their musical influences were equally diverse. They favored tight compositions and performances in an era when most groups didn't, so naturally they were the subject of a huge bidding war. To celebrate its triumph, the record label released five singles--and the album--simultaneously. People cried "hype" and not one of 'em hit. The album, however, was a solid seller and remains the rock upon which the group's reputation still rests. The slashing guitars and soaring harmonies of "Omaha" and "Hey Grandma" still snap, crackle, and pop! The sock-it-to-ya soul of "Changes" and the dueling guitars and vocals of "Indifference" still rock. The gentle folk ballad "Fall on You," the delicate "Sitting by the Window," and the country-flavored "8:05" are all strong songs, distinguished by their balance of four-part harmonies and three-guitar power. --Don Waller

''2ND TIER BAND INDEED''.......2007-07-12
Reading these overblown hyped up reviews was truly a treat!!To much acid i suspect, especially S.king.The claim that they had better '5 part' harmony then the BEACH BOYS is especially ridiculous and also the claim that J.Spence was a top 5 best guitarist makes me cringe ,just listen to his vibrato and string bending and you'll hear the same amatuerish uncontrolled drivel that many lower tiered guitarist displayed in that era.I know this soundS like just a bashing session but it is not,it's just reality., the music on this disc is very good for what it is a SAN FRANCISCO TYPE MUSIC BAND, NO BETTER NO WORSE THAN THE OTHERS FROM THAT AREA AND TIME!
On Your Way To Omaha.......2007-07-09
Where exactly do place Moby Grape in the strata of American pop music circa 1966-69? I can't honestly place them in the upper echelon with the likes of The Byrds, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, Hendrix and the Doors. But certainly they do belong smack-dab in the middle of the second tier, with The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Mamas & Pappas, Santana, Steve Miller Band and of course Love, the other great Bay area band that never had a top-40 hit.
With that said "Listen My Friends" will provide you with your 20 song fix of MG. I wasn't a huge fan back then. But I did have the first two Lp's and I have really enjoyed getting back into Ooh Mama Ooh!!!Grape Moby Music....Or is that Murderous vendetta for The Judge that keeps you comming back for another look at Motorcycle Ireane?.. What ever your taste in Grape Jam, this collection is all vintage and ripe. Pop a grape into your mouth right now and you'll be on your way to Omaha....Ooh Mama Ooh...Omaha!!!!Enjoy.
Reviewing the group rather than the record.......2007-06-12
A new record is out, and I want to know if it is good. I already know the previous work of Moby Grape and I do not need Sam King telling me how good the group is. He is right but redundant. I want to know if there is anaything new on the record that I have not got or heard. From reading the 8 reviewers, I see no mention of any new material. I assume that everything on the record is recycled from the original releases and several previous compilations. A proper review might then begin with: "why does anyone need this. The second hand stores have copies of the previous compilations." The next issue is why the record company did not release something new, like the Amsterdam concert. Should record companies be rewarded when they have such conservative release policies. Why buy these songs again? Foolish, right.
Doesn't Live Up to the Hype.......2007-06-09
Moby Grape is absolutely the most over-rated group to emerge from the late sixties. What little appeal they might have had is mitigated by the ridiculous claims of their followers, i.e. "better first album than the Beatle, Byrds, Stones, Airplane et al". At best, this is a highly debatable claim. At worst, it's a complete falsehood (my view).
Spence's work on the first two Airplane albums is better than his work with the Grape thanks to the far superior vocals of Marty Balin/Signe Anderson/Grace Slick and the intiguing guitar interplay provided by Casady, Kantner and Kaukonen.
I've tried to get into the Grape, several times. But the hype is such a turn off. Particularly when the group fails miserably to live up to it.
It's time to have some grape in the collection.......2007-05-26
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I had the honor of interviewing Jerry Miller. His stories of what the band went through made it clear that even with so many forces against them cream will still go to the top.
This is a terrific introduction to the group. While the fanatic (Rightly so) will always find songs that should have been included, those that are on this package will give you all sides of the Moby experience. They could rock, they could play, and their music was and is a great represenstation of the amazing sounds that eminated from the city by the bay.
If you are in Omaha or Ohio listen my friends and get a taste of the grape. It'll be rather pleasing.
Be well always,
Craig Fenton

It's Not Columbia Records fault.......2007-06-10
Nor does the blame fall on Matthew Katz. After all, he managed Jefferson Airplane also and they did quite well despite his "bad" management. Columbia Records is hardly at fault. One of the greatest labels of all time, Columbia broke Dylan, the Byrds and Big Brother. The "label" certainly didn't stand in their way.
Moby Grape didn't make it big because they really weren't very good. Let's face it. Plenty of groups had flop singles (see The Kinks). It didn't stop them from having an extremely successful musical career. Renaissance or Fairport Convention NEVER had a hit single--nor did they have hit albums. That didn't stop them from making great music for decades.
Airplane had SIX singles released in their first YEAR! Four were flops. Two were hits. Why? Because the hits ("Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit") were actually GOOD.
So stop blaming everyone else for the Grape's failure. The Grape failed because they weren't that good. Bad management and label problems didn't stop Buffalo Springfield from acheiving legendary statuure. Nor did it deep-six the lengthy careers of its individual members.
It might actually be possible to listen and appreciate this group if the undeserved hype would die down! It's so overblown. And flat out untrue.
The Beatles sound like incompetent amateurs compared to the "Grape". Sheesh! Enough already.
Buy Listen my Friends instead.......2007-06-07
Loved Moby Grape, but this is just way to over priced for a non re-engineered i.e. not digitally done cover of the LP. Go with the Listem my Friends greatest hit cd, it's cheaper with most of the songs on it. Or if you are hard core get the 2003 Europe double CD, Its pricey, but so is this and you get mostly everything plus some extras.
Great Debut Album.......2007-05-08
I like this album so much that it don't matter if the manager was crummy to begin with. And from what I heard, the band got their music back anyways. The album is so pure that it can easily be mistakened by any of the other SF bands of this genre and probally because they jammed or played with them. All the songs here represent a simpler time, well maybe not so with Skip Spence, but hey he was good too. I like all the songs on this album, so I didn't have a problem paying the extra dough for it, at least I can say I have it. Here's my 1 out of 5 on the tracks:
1 Hey Grandma 4/5 reminds me of The Monkees
2 Mr. Blues 5/5 like most SF bands
3 Fall On You 5/5
4 8:05 4/5
5 Come In The Morning 5/5
6 Omaha 5/5
7 Naked, If I Want To 5/5 I think they could have made it longer
8 Somday 5/5
9 Ain't No Use 4/5
10 Sitting By The Window 5/5 reminds me of The Byrds or David Crosby
11 Changes 5/5 sounds like Steve Winwood with Eric Clapton's guitar
12 Lazy Me 5/5
13 Indifference 5/5 love it true SF sound, almost Grateful Dead like
Superb, I wish I have heard this stuff sooner, being only a fan of this album for 3 years now when I first heard it on a pirate-like station. It might be more money than your usual run in the mill album, but I think it's worth the extra cash. Enjoy.
Did not like them then.............................2007-03-21
Still don't think much of them now. Many other groups of the 60's just blew these guys away. Dead/Airplane,etc., the Grape just were a big bore. They can remix and do whatever they want and it would still be a non starter for me. The price is not the issue, if you like it so what.. pay the extra 10 bucks.. not me however.
Someone has to explain why this is so expensive..........2007-02-15
Just makes no sense to me. Yea, the songs on this one great Grape recording are fun to listen to once in a while, but the price is just silly. Me, I burned a disc from my old vinyl. Great sound--I bet you could find a clean vinyl copy for $2-$3. The songs never sounded better, and after a few listens I was able to retire it to my shelf. In two years, I'll dig it out, listen to it once or twice, and put it away again. Great music is great, but being fleeced by music management has nothing going for it.

Great Grape!.......2007-07-06
These guys were the quintessinal San Francisco Band - even though they co-existed with the Dead and the Airplane (not to mention Quicksilver), they had it all as musicians, singers, and writers. Too bad they were poorly marketed - I believe that their debut album came out as the same time as Sgt. Pepper in '67. In fact, I vaguely remember buying both in May or June of that year. These guys could play Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, - even Swing - you name it, they could play it - and played it well they did. But, if I can paraphrase the CD's pamphlet, bad timing and marketing ruined them right from the start. Just give this a listen and you'll be hooked - their songs don't even sound dated - and they range in tempo and key - each one is completely different and enjoyable. I would consider the Grape as one of the best, if not the best, unsung heros of rock and roll. If you listen to these two CDs and walk away unimpressed, then it is my opinion that you are absolutely deaf.
Its nice to have all this Grape in one place!.......2006-04-08
The San Francisco group "Moby Grape" consisted of 5 talented singer-songwriting musicians who blended rock, soul, country, blues and folk. Their self-titled debut album was stunning and definitely deserves it's classic status.
Unfortunately a few factors worked against the group: the wide diversity of styles set them apart from their contemporaries but probably alienated some listeners; they were also way over-hyped and they had such an odd blend of personalities (particularly the unstable Skip Spence).
It can't be denied that their musical output after the first album was a very mixed bag, but despite the fact that they never got close to matching the quality of the first record every album contains some excellent music. This is why a retrospective like this is the best way to appreciate their music. It's especially good for those new to the group and fans like me who have a bunch of old LP's and have longed for a compilation of their better material.
Thankfully, most of the "good stuff" is here, including the entire debut album, some rarities and a few curiosities. The individual members are well represented: lead guitarist Jerry Miller shines on songs like "Can't Be So Bad" and "Miller's Blues" and he shares the songwriting credit along with drummer Don Stevenson on some of their best songs like "Hey Grandma", "8:05", "Ain't No Use" and "Murder in My Heart For the Judge". (It's also no surprise that many place Miller in the same guitar league as Hendrix, Santana and Bloomfield). Bass player Bob Mosley's soulful voice is dynomite on "Mr. Blues", "Murder In My Heart.." and "Truckin' Man". Peter Lewis(son of the late movie-TV star Loretta Young) is probably the best singer-songwriter in the group and is great on "Ain't That a Shame", "Sittin' By The Window", "Right Before My Eyes" and uses his unique vocal vibrato to good effect on "What's To Choose". Last but not least creative and unhinged Skip Spence rocks on the classic "Omaha", does a nice live version of "Changes" and has 2 different versions of his strange "Seeing".
Individually they were all talented, but when they really gelled as a group it would be hard to find a better rhythm section and 3 guitars that blended so well. You then add vocal harmonies that can positively give you the chills and you've got Moby Grape at it's best.
The one thing this CD can't reproduce is the adrenaline rush of seeing the group live; Mosley with his bass hanging down to his knees, Miller all over his hollow bodied electric guitar, the 4 and 5 part harmonies and, although he was never my favorite on record, in concert the whirling dervish Skip Spence always stole the show.
see all the other reviews for the history lesson.......2005-11-06
The Summer of Love was not easy on all of its revellers, regardless of their innate musical brilliance. Moby Grape definitely got the short end of the stick.
Considering the musicality of such catchy rock numbers as the quick-fingered "Aint No Use" or the resolute "I Am Not Willing," it's stunning their name isn't dropped more frequently with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, or even Quicksilver Messenger Service. They could rock harder than most of their contemporaries, often were more delicate and concise too, and had the added firepower of 3-part vocal harmonies which put them in a league with the Byrds.
All the right ingredients can be present and still not result in success or acclaim. These are the hits you never heard, and an unfiltered taste of the San Francisco sound in the late sixties.
as hard as this was to get my hands on..........2004-08-05
...i expected more.
so what is this> this is a 2-disc package of moby grape's good stuff. everything you need in one place. moby grape was the 60s san francisco psychedelic band you never heard, but it was also arguably the best. buffalo springfield, creedence clearwater (admittedly a far superior band), grateful dead, all of these SF bands went on to attain worldwide fame, and though moby grape should've been neck and neck with them, terrible management, misdirected promotion, and inner turmoil destroyed them before they even had a chance. the debut album, included here in its entirity, is considered one of the greatest albums of the 60s, indeed, one of the greatest debut albums of all time. and it is very good, but i've never been a huge fan of harmonized vocals...i much prefer a single prominent lead singer. nonetheless, this is a near-perfect record. the rest of the stuff is good too, and some of it i like even more, as they eventually drifted away from the harmonies-only approach. if you like the grateful dead and buffalo springfield and crosby stills & nash, you'll like this even more.
Rich, but imperfect anthology.......2002-11-03
There's a certain ironic consistency in this anthology being a slight misfire. Given the long-string of events that negatively affected the band's commercial fortunes, a perfectly realized retrospective would almost be unfitting. Still, given that the Grape's first three albums are currently only available from the band's former manager (and arch nemesis) Matthew Katz on his Los Angeles-based San Francisco Sound label, and that the debut lists for a ridiculous price (and the reproduction of "Wow/Grape Jam" is incomplete), hunting down a copy of this out-of-print 1993 collection is still your best (and perhaps most morally fulfilling) bet.
Though compilation producer Bob Irwin (who now heads Sundazed records) is an obvious Moby Grape enthusiast (as is David Fricke, who wrote the excellent liner notes), some of his choices for this collection are hard to understand. Of particular consequence is the reproduction of the first album in its entirety (good!), but with bits and pieces of studio chatter inserted here and there (very, very bad). The debut was a beautifully produced and tightly crafted package, and the additions are hugely distracting. The inclusion of original mono single versions is a nice touch, especially given that producer David Rubinson's stereo mixes reproduce poorly in mono.
The selections from the remaining Grape albums leave out a few key tracks, such as "Three-Four" from the "Wow" album, and virtually all of "Truly Fine Citizen" (a contractual obligation recording, but still valued by Grape fans). What's here is excellent, and serves as both a fine introduction and fitting reminder of the Grape's greatness. The demos and live tracks are nice additions to the Grape canon, but they're no substitute for having complete, unenhanced, versions of the albums available. This 2-CD set is out-of-print in the U.S., but can still be found used on Amazon's U.S. site, and new on Amazon's U.K. site ....

not as good overall as the first, but better in spots.......2006-12-01
Personally I don't think that Wow is as good as the self titled album as a whole, but if you take it in pieces, it's actually better. Everyone needs to own this album if only to hear Motorcycle Irene, which is one of the greatest songs ever written and performed.
Here's What You Do.......2006-09-04
Wow / Grape Jam is incomplete. So is Columbia Legacy's Vintage.
Answer....Buy both albums (Amazon's other buying options still has some copies of Vintage for around $15/disc - which in California is a third of a fill up for a camery).Take the best cuts of both, and put them on a blank disc (the only song you wont have is the (very spacy) the Lake, and the announcement to turn your platter speed from 33 1/3 to 78 for Just Like Gene Autry, a foxtrot that was on the original WOW album.
This album reminds me a lot of Buffalo Springfield Again. Pungiant little gems from a rapidly disintegrating band.
Enjoy.
Incidentally, you can do this, add The Place And The Time (original version - from Vintage), Miller's Blues (Live - from Vintage), and still have around 7 minutes to mess around with. Great for a car backup.
UNDERRATED.......2006-05-10
Not only is this album underrated, so was every Moby Grape album after the first one. This one is different from all of them, showing the diversity of talent and style in the band. How many bands had 5 strong songwriters? The jams are entertaining. The only knock is that it's missing the second half of Bitter Wind and all of Just Like Gene Autrey a Fox Trot, which can be found on the Vintage 2 CD set. It's also missing The Lake from Grape Jam, which was a spacey, spoken word psychedelic piece. I'd also recommend 20 Granite Creek and '69
Not as good as their first album.......2006-05-04
The only Moby Grape album really worth having is their first.
I have seen them live over the years and I am convinced that
in their prime, they were one of the Bay Area's best bands but like other local greats (like the Sons of Champlin) they just didn't improve on their first record. Also some folks might wonder why "The Lake" didn't appear on this re-issue. It's probably due to writer's roalties. There was a songwriting contest promoted by a San Francisco radio station at the time. "The lake" was the winner. Rumor has it that there was a similar competition for the Buffalo Springfield that was hosted by a Los Angeles radio station st that time as well!
Unfairly Maligned Album.......2006-04-12
Before I ever heard any of their songs, I knew of Moby Grape by reputation -- the quintessential 60's band that had an incredible first album, the success of which they could never top, and they flamed out big time. I always wondered how that momentum was halted and how such a highly regarded band could flop.
That brings us to "Wow." Until recently, I had never heard anything other than their first album, which was pretty darn good and serves as a great late 60's timepiece. When getting ready to listen to "Wow," I prepared myself for dull, boring, tuneless 60's psychedelia. I must say I was truly blown away by how good this entire CD was. I dare say it's just as good as the debut album. Great harmonies, tight playing and arrangements, and great instrumentation throughout. I swear listening to this made me feel like I was transported back to 1968. It's one of those rare albums that does live up to it's title.
This prompted me to find out more about the band and see exactly where things fell apart. And after searching, I found that with Moby Grape, what could go wrong, did go wrong. At the root of it all lay horrible management on the business and personal side. Moby Grape was a wonderfully constructed boat without a rudder; and when they crashed, they quickly sunk.
If you're interested in the band, all you really need is this album and the self-titled debut. I think "Vintage" (a double CD collection of their best) may be out of print, but it certainly would give you a taste of the band as well.
Stand out songs: "Murder in My Heart For the Judge," "Bitter Wind," "Rose Colored Eyes," and "He."

What could of been.......2007-01-20
This album gives a flavor of the genius of the Moby Grape. One can only imagine what they could have achieved without the hassles. When they are tight the harmonies are brilliant as is the guiter playing. When we listen to the songs and say that sounds like The Doobie Brothers or some other band we have to think back to before there were the Doobies or Little Feat there was the Moby Grape. Eventhough they never achieved the level of greatness they deserved, they had a greater effect on many bands that followed than most people realize.
Legendary Grape.......2006-02-18
What a pleasant suprise to find this! This is the real Grape doing what they do best. My favorites include "It don't take much", "You can depend on me", "Telephone love", yeah I know they're all sung by Bob but hey, what a voice. The guy sings like Otis Redding. A big suprise to me was how funky Pete's rhythm guitar playing is, and good vocals too. Jerry Miller is STILL one of the premier and under-rated guitar players in rock and he does it all with one guitar. Don drumming is great, check out "Depend on me" and the fat groove he provides for the band. Is there a better soulful singing drummer ANYWHERE? I have been a fan since seeing them first in 1966 and let me tell you they were killer then and they still are now. They are the BEST SAN FRANCISCO BAND I ever saw, and I saw them all. RIP Skippy.
P.S. forget about MK, he is a bitter old man.
They Really Gave it Hell.......2004-01-11
Any fan who caught the Grape during their '89 to '00 run knows how hard they tried to get back on the horse that bucked them so roughly in the past. This album was a work of great ambition and hard work that, unfortunately did not lead to the new recording contract they richly deserved. The songs represent the rip-roaring old Grape sound of the Sixties as well as the more lyrical sound of their late Seventies "Live Grape" recording. Its all good and some of it is magnificent, particularly the extra track "Changing". It loses one star only because of the sound. DIG did well with what they had , but apparently the masters of these sessions were not in the best condition. That should not stop any fan from getting this CD , either as a more permanent replacement for the original, fragile, casette version or as a sorely missed addition to the Grape's legacy.
Moby Grape's Forgotten Swan Song.......2004-01-10
This is a the final Moby Grape reunion album which they released in cassette tape form only in 1990, under the name of the Melvilles. The Melvilles was as close as they could come to the Moby Grape name without being sued by Matthew Katz, their original manager, who still owns liscening rights to the Moby Grape name and much of their music. I was aware of the Melville tape but never could find it until it was released in 2003 on CD as "Legendary Grape". Mr. Katz should reliquish the rights to all things Moby Grape he owns. He has single handedly destroyed the legacy of a group, that deserves a whole lot more than Mr. Katz's ruthless exploitation of thier name and musical catalog.
I had some misgivings about buying "Legendary Grape" when it became available in CD form. Skip Spence didn't participate in this project, and for me, Skip was the keeper of the flame for this amazing band. I didn't want the final chapter of Moby Grape's history to be tainted by a lifeless and weary parody of their former glory. From the opening chords of "All My Life", a Skip Spencer song which he contributed despite his non participation, the reconstituted Grape plays with passion and power evoking the muscular guitar crossfire and delicate choir boy harmonies that was the signature sound of Moby Grape. Skip may have passed on this project but his fingerprints and DNA are all over it. The "Legendary Grape/Melvilles" project melts away the years to the heady days of San Francisco, 1967, when few bands wanted close a show with Moby Grape on the bill, because this band's volcanic charisma and take-no-prisoners approach to playing music, simply blew away every other band in their path.
Peter Lewis, Bob Mosely, Don Stevenson, Jerry Miller and even Skip Spence, despite his many demons, never gave up on the dream. Each member of Moby Grape never defined themselves as anything other than a working musician. This inspiring coda to the Moby Grape legacy deserves to be heard on it's own terms as a great rock and roll album. No matter who Matthew Katz and his lawyers sue, he cannot steal what was never his to take; the hearts and minds of Moby Grape and their fans; who will one day do justice to the Grape legacy. This is a great Moby Grape album and deserves to carry Moby Grape name.
moby grape's grand finale.......2003-06-12
this is a good, solid cd . it is not as spectacular as moby grape's debut album (which ranks high on my top 20 all-time favorite list), but it holds up well with repeated listening. the skip spence tune, "All My Life" starts things off with a big, full sound, and lots of multi-voiced harmony."On The Dime" is a fun song, as is "Bitter Wind in Tanganika", and the bonus track(not on the original release) of "Changing" by peter lewis is a charming look backward and forward. "Took It All Away" is a reminder of how management always seems to get the profits while the musicians fade from fame and fortune. the biggest surprise in this album was "Talk About Love", a cover version that really rocks and brought back memories of that glorious debut album. this is a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection.

Very Enjoyable Music..........2007-04-01
...but definitely NOT worth the three bills that "seller" is asking for it. However, if you've nothing better to do with your money, the songs "Chinese Song" and "Ode To The Man At The End Of The Bar" are the high points of this. "Goin' On Down To Texas" is OK, too, but sixties bands with 3 guitarists - whew. Can't cope with Skynyrd now and I didn't dig Grape then. In truth, those three songs I mentioned almost make me want to subscribe to (what USED to be) "Napster." Maybe someday this, The Pointer Sisters' "Priority," Terence Boylan's "Suzy," Phantom Rocker and Slick's first album, and Tony Joe White's "The Real Thang" will be available. And I can cease purchasing CD's.
modesto disco..no esperemos ya la genialidad............2006-10-04
basicamente este disco no decepciona si uno no espera encontrar la frescura, originalidad y desparpajo de sus primeras obras. aqui se escucha un buen grupo, inclinado mas al country que a la lejana locura del verano del amor...encima skip se quedo dormido con el koto encima....temas como ABOUT TIME, GOIN DOWN TO TEXAS, ODE TO THE MAN AT THE END OF THE BAR nos traen añoranzas de la gran riqueza que en algun momento mostro esta banda...reitero no es un disco mediocre....pero no es lo de antes!!!!!!!!!!
You're not missing anything..........2005-10-28
There is a reason this album is no longer in print. Moby Grape were a great band, but unfortunately that greatness only lasted through their first 2 albums, mostly the first self-titled album. After their 2nd, "Wow/Grape Jam", they lost something, somehow.
This particlar album, "20 Granite Creek" is a throwaway effort. First of all it has NONE of the great ballads that made "Moby Grape" so great. But even the rock songs which were so rockin' on that 1st lp are gone from this effort and none of these songs have the same appeal as either of the first 2 albums.
If you want a true classic 60's rock album by this band, get "Moby Grape", their first one. If you like them a lot and want more, either get "Wow" in addition to the 1st, or get the great set "Vintage Moby Grape". But that first album is a total winner, every track is great, so I highly recommend that to start with.
Good Ol' Grape Jam...Between My Toes.......2001-10-28
It's a crime that the Moby Grape catalog isn't more readily available, in decent editions, in this country. I bought my copy of "20 Granite Creek" and it's one of those lousy San Francisco Sound reissues...no liner notes, shoddy graphics. As fellow seekers know, Columbia/Legacy put out the fine "Vintage" back in the early '90s; it contains all of the first LP, assorted singles, alternate takes/mixes. A great document, and out of print! Amazing. I suppose it has something to do with legal disputes over who owns the name? Anyway, it is truly reprehensible that the folks who own San Francisco Sounds records don't do a better job; I thought they were, like, all enlightened out there. "20 Granite Creek" is a good album, and I guess the essential Moby Grape collection would include the first four Columbia LPs (even "Truly Fine Citizen" has its moments--title track is actually one of their best songs ever), and this one. I love "Goin' Down to Texas," which clocks in around two minutes--also one of their best songs. Moby Grape was a major rock and roll group, one of the very best ever, and when you see what a great job Columbia has done with the Byrds, you have to wonder where the justice is in this world.
The 'comeback' LP for the Moby Grape...........2001-09-18
When this LP appeared in 1971 it seemed as if the Grape had been gone for a while, when actually it was just a year and a half previous ("Truly Fine Citizen" - with Miller,Lews & Stevenson with sessionists). This underrated album was recorded in a band house put together by David Rubinson, producer of the first 3 LPs. The house, of course resided in Scotts Valley,CA. The band polished up for some great tunes like "Gypsy Wedding", "Baby I'm the Kind of Man You Can Trust","Horse in the Rain". Also "About Time" is a great Stevenson track. Sadly, Spence's only contribution (he doesn't sing and his guitar work is buried in the mix for most of the album) is "Chinese Song". Skip playing koto for nearly 6 minutes is a little hard to understand but if it was coming from a group like The Kaleidoscope it would fit in better, nonetheless it is a rather expiremental piece and shows what a versatile band they were. It is a great record, short lived reunion as the band parted in less than a couple of months. Of course, the album didn't sell (#177 in the US) and is out of print (on this Line label, there is a dreaded Matthew Katz reissue, don't buy it). Find an LP.

Customer Reviews:
Is this Moby Grape? Don't think so........2003-12-22
Just because the printing on the cover reads "Moby Grape" doesn't mean that the performers or composers have any relation to Moby Grape. This is not the same band that created, e.g., Omaha, Come in the Morning, Fall on You, Sitting by the Window, and Mr.Blues. Omaha, Come in the Morning, Fall on You, Sitting by the Window, and Mr.Blues feature imaginative rhythm changes. Moreover, these songs entail shifting of the lead voice among different voices with each voice having a different quality, e.g., earthy sounding versus more commercial (trained) sounding. In addition, these songs show changes in emphasis, where the emphasis is first on guitar, then on a multi-voiced chorus, and then on a solo voice. In contrast, the album being reviewed contains none of these qualities. No imaginative rhythm changes. No switching from guitar solo, to chorus, to solo voice. No shifting from typical "trained" commercial voice quality to an earthy voice quality. Do not be deceived by the cover art. The sound in the album under review is not relevant to the "San Francisco Sound." If you have already purchased Moby Grape's powerful first album, then your next step in pursuing the San Francisco Sound might be to buy: Surrealistic Pillow, the first three Grateful Dead studio albums plus their live Dark Star album, and Quicksilver Messenger's album containing The Fool. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to round out your San Francisco sound collection with the first Santana album, the first It's A Beautiful Day album, the second Big Brother album, and Country Joe (Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine; Janis; Fixin to Die Rag). I might also explore the first Sons of Champlin album, which contains the awesome "Sing Me A Rainbow," a song perhaps on par to anything created by Jeff Airplane. Because the song features an organ, and because of the "lovely" vocals, Sing Me A Rainbow embodies the "San Francisco sound." To conclude, the album under review is not Moby Grape.
Moby Grape Gets It Again From Matthew Katz.......2001-12-23
In the never ending saga of bad mistakes of Moby Grape comes this entry in their catalog; a Matthew Katz-produced-and-released album. Of course, by buying this you gleefully fork over your bucks so Matthew Katz can afford to sue the Moby Grape. And, in his oft-time go after It's A Beautiful Day. Please, do everyone a favor and don't buy this. It's great music, but you can afford to pass on it. Moby Grape can't.
Silver Wheels and Queen of the Crow are best. The rest so-so.......1999-08-22
A must for the Grape nut. For anyone else you can buy the first album, a must have. 69 is another good one.
