School's Out
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Alice Cooper used to claim he wrote entire albums worth of lyrics in an afternoon with the TV on. True or not, whatever led to moments of ultraclarity such as "We got no class / And we got no principles / And we got no innocence / We can't even think of a word that rhymes" should be bottled and force-fed to Marilyn Manson. School's Out (1972) is where Cooper's show-biz tendencies first fully flowered--"Gutter Cat Versus the Jets" more than nods to West Side Story and "Grande Finale" sounds like the band was trying to ace Elmer Bernstein out of a gig--but it also rocks hard, and most of the ambition-laden stuff (especially the epic "My Stars") really does work. Nasty and grande as they wanted to be. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:
One Killer Guitar Lick.......2007-07-13
I have read the other reviews and I agree with all of them. But I had to add that this album is worth buying if only for the title song. The opening to School's Out is probably one of the best guitar licks around. Instantly recognizable, like Johnny B. Goode and Smoke on the Water, it is so simple but just screams off the album. Combined with the bass, and Alice's feral screams, the song is amazing. The rest of the album is good but would only merit 3.5-4 stars, especially when compared with Killer and Billion Dollar Babies. It is the title song that kicks it up to five stars.
School's Out (Alice Cooper) R&R at it's best !.......2007-06-27
Rock & Roll at it's best and Alice Cooper (and the original band membrs) at their very best - Great writing and talent - Is my favorite !
Nothing but a Teenage Rebellious Anthem.......2007-01-02
I also remember this being my first LP I ever bought. The title track was a claim for youngsters to have a voice and a right to shout out loud that School was out. Cooper was hated by many mother's,except mine who was super cool, she loved Alice and his voice. No matter what,Alice spoke out for youngsters and rebelion and this lp brought forth a strenth beyond belief of Cooper followers, look at me 35 years later,I'm still a fanatic of his stuff.
The music is very hard and rough, yet has elements of broadway musicals, West Side Story and some jazz. Ezrin went beyond the hard rock and flirted with many styles. The results was a very well thought out masterpiece that brought revolution to youths in the form of rebellion.
The opus of a 'Killer' band.......2006-12-11
It's nice to see that there are many fans around who still appreciate what a masterpiece this album was. I grew up a big, big fan of Alice's first band, who were incredibly talented musicians as well as powerful songwriters. People forget what an important player guitarist Michael Bruce was in those days, but if you look back, you'll see his songwriting credits on all the biggies from that era.
Having been practically weaned on Alice, I found it as sad to see this band break up as I imagine it must have been for fans of groups such as Pink Floyd or Van Halen. Sadder even still was watching Alice become less of a musician over the years and more and more of a shock rocker, and knowing that younger generations would never be aware that he had once made some truly remarkable music. Although there were a few flashes of brilliance in his solo period (most notably on 'Welcome to my Nightmare' and 'From the Inside'), there was nothing, to my mind, that ever came close to the stuff that was put out on Love It To Death, Killer, Billion Dollar Babies and School's Out.
To me, however, School's Out was the pinnacle. Not as hard rocking as some of the others, yet delightfully sprinkled with touches of various musical influences ranging from jazz to Broadway musicals, this was the opus for Alice and company. Interestingly, the title song, which was Alice's biggest solo hit with this group, has always been my least favorite. While I do like how it sets the theme of the album, I've always thought that things really kicked off with the second track, "Luney Tune," which is a neatly packaged song about losing it that has what is arguably their tightest song-ending ever. "Gutter Cat," "Blue Turk," "My Stars" and "Alma Mater" are likewise among the band's best tracks, and the closer, "Grande Finale," makes a fitting finale indeed for this particular piece of music.
I agree totally with one of the earlier reviewers who lamented that School's Out has not yet been digitally remastered. If there was ever an Alice Cooper album that would be suited for it, School's Out, with its extensive musical range, is definitely the one. The day that happens, I'll be sending for a copy, and pronto.
Mainstream Alice fans, this might not be to your taste. It's pretty experimental, and there's a lot less rock and guitar work than usual. However, if you consider yourself an Alice Cooper fan and are into musicianship and songwriting, than this should definitely be in your library.
Teenage Anthem Time.......2006-12-08
The title track to "Schools Out" became the fist in the air anthem for high school and college students for years to come. It is still regularly played on classic rock radio and has probably become Alice Cooper's biggest hit. The album "Schools Out" is a loose concept piece revolving around school. Actually it somewhat revolves around the musical "West Side Story" with snippets from the musical being infused in the tracks "Gutter Cat Vs The Jets" and the album closer "Grand Finale". This is not the first time that Cooper referred to "West Side" as the album "Easy Action" also contained homage's to the musical and the title of the album was named after the character "Action" in the musical. Other than the title track there was not much else that got radio airplay here which is surprising. Overall the album is a strong one with Alice injecting some hilarious spoken word narrative towards the end of the 8th track "Alma Mater". Again, part of the appeal of Alice was that he never took himself seriously. The element of humor was always apparent. Of course the title track contains another on of Alice's best one liners: "Well we got no class, and we got no principles, and we got no innocence, we can't even think of a word that rhymes"...........priceless stuff.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops are as American as apple pie.......2000-07-16
For those of us who have enjoyed the irrepressible Maestro Kunzel and the effevescent Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for so many years both live, on Cd and on PBS, this collection of Americana is as good as it gets. Sousa, long revered as America's March King, shines on these discs as the composer of delightful dance tunes and even 'The Presidential Polonaise' a worthy contender with the weighty European prcessional. Its a pity that the President doesn't trot this out for White House functions. The tunes are every bit a Fourth of July celebration. The spoken word piece, 'Casey at the Bat' couldn't have a better narrator than Johnny Bench,a man who knows the score about baseball. So, if you want to have yourself up and marching and dancing and laughing around the house, buy this collection and treat youself to a holiday any day of the year.

Customer Reviews:
Only a couple enjoyed.......2007-01-10
I guess I expected more music from the classic SCROOGE, with Alister Syms. But, I did like the music from GOODBYE MR. CHIPS. Otherwise, not very much more on this CD.
A most pleasant journey........2003-12-09
This cd is one of a series of film music productions by Chandos. Others include the works of Vaughan Williams, Dmitri Shostakovich, Malcolm Arnold, Nino Rota etc. All are conducted by Rumon Gamba with the BBC Philharmonic. If this disc containing the music of Richard Addinsell is any indication of what to expect from the others, then, indeed, the series may constitute a very fine one. The playing is excellent---clear, dynamic, tuneful, just right (sentimentally speaking) and atmospheric in the usual motion picture soundtrack manner. The recorded sound aids significantly in sustaining the favorable overall impression. The Warsaw Concerto (from "Dangerous Moonlight") is probably the best known piece here, however melodies from a number of the other works provide a very welcome measure of enjoyment. The Suite from "Goodbye Mr. Chips" is particularly lovely and memorable. "Love on the Dole" offers a charming elegance. "The Black Rose" , which starred Tyrone Power, has an open air spirit of exoticism and adventure. The wonderful "Scrooge" music restores the vivid memories associated with Alastair Sim's outstanding and deservedly famous portrayal of the title character. There is a moving tune, which is played in the movie during a meeting between Scrooge, as a young man , and his ill fated sister. It also appears when Scrooge visits his nephew to seek forgiveness and acceptance after he has learned a lesson from the three spirits that he will never forget. Though the Suite runs for fourteen minutes, one still wishes for more...The Overture from "Tom Brown's Schooldays" is both pleasantly playful and nostalgic. (Oh how that violin sometimes brings tears to one's eyes.)..."The Admirable Crichton" , for which Addinsell refused to take credit, displays continental flair...Finally, The Flame Tango from "Out of the Clouds" and the Suite from "Blithe Spirit" also give melodic satisfaction. Clearly, Richard Addinsell stands as one of the most engaging movie score composers of a bygone generation, as this cd attests. Most satisfying and warmly recommended.

Capital Regions Best-Kept Secret.......2004-04-14
Another Day at School is the best CD out there. NO filler, NO goofy sound effects to make up time, it rocks hard from start to finish. VELMAS! But hey, don't take my word for it! Get on out there and pay no mare than $15! Buy this CD! Why? Because the Velmas ROCK HARD!
If you need a new favorite CD..........2003-02-12
Buy this one!! These guys have some real lyrical and musical genius going for them, there are some really really great songs on this CD, they blow a lot of bands clear out of the water, talent and sound-wise. They're very worth taking a look at!
Good tunes!.......2003-01-10
Great catchy alt/pop tunes. This album is by far one of the more refreshing releases of 2002. Sun is such a strong single, it really should get way more radio play. If you like fun, catchy music, check out this CD.
Keep an eye on these guys.......2002-10-16
