What's not to like about Three Dog Night? Well, their overwrought cover of Otis Redding's version of "Try a Little Tenderness," for one thing. But almost everything else on their 20-track best-of--a remarkably high percentage of which actually ended up high on the charts back in these guys' day--might remind you fondly of your teen years, or maybe the nine months you spent in third grade. Besides giving John Hiatt one of his first professional breaks (they made a hit of his "Sure As I'm Sittin' Here" in 1974), the Dogs managed some truly graceful moments with the likes of "Celebrate" and "Out in the Country." --Rickey Wright

A Nice Bit Of Nostalgia.......2007-07-13

I enjoyed hearing this CD. I knew some Three Dog Night songs. This is not exhaustive -- "Try A Little Tenderness" was not included. But my favorites are on this: "Black And White", "Old Fashioned Love Song", "Celebrate", and "The Show Must Go On".

One of those "you had to be there" Cds.......2007-03-14

Most people who like this will do so largely because of nostalgia. If you were around in the 70s, you will have fond memories of this stuff. Tunes like their version of "Easy to Be Hard," "Black and White" (presaging Paul and Stevie's "Ebony and Ivory" by a decade or so), "One " (is the lonliest number) etc. will bring bliss to seventies children (and teenagers and college kids), but will probably sound overwrought and corny to everyone else. BTW, what the HECK does "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" mean?

Great band; but not enough air time here!.......2007-02-10

Three Dog Night enjoyed tremendous success for several years. Between the years 1969 and 1974, they released their own songs as well as cover songs that rose to the top of the pop and adult contemporary charts rather frequently. The music on this CD is incredible; and it holds your interest the entire way through. Their music remains remarkably fresh and strong even to this day.

The CD starts with the infectiously happy "Joy To The World." This song wishes happiness and peace not just to humans but to all creatures on our planet. It's the best antidepressant around! SMILES The musical arrangement exemplifies classic rock--YES!!!!

Shambala, the nest track on this CD, has another potent rock flavor. The song may have a somewhat more "laid back" feel to it than "Joy To The World;" but it works very well.

Other classic Three Dog Night songs on this CD include "An Old Fashioned Love Song;" a tragic ballad about a love gone awry entitled "The Song Must Go On" and "Easy To Be Hard" from Hair.

"Black & White" reminds us to love our fellow man regardless of the color of his or her skin; I remember this song fondly from my grade school years. We had a 45 rpm record of this song and at recess we played it so much we practically wore the grooves off the record! "An Old Fashioned Love Song" has a great intro with the organ playing; and the band performs this number with great sensitivity. "An Old Fashioned Love Song" is both romantic and hauntingly beautiful. People will remember "An Old Fashioned Love Song" for a long time to come. "I've Never Been To Spain" rocks and stuns you with its sensitivity. Excellent!

One of Three Dog Night's other hits was "Celebrate." The musical arrangement showcases the band's incredible sound with their singing and a solid musical arrangement.

Unfortunately, I have one complaint. Other reviewers have written that the CD is just too brief--and they are right. It is shameful that such a talented band does not get its proper due on this CD. I agree with the reviewer who writes that the other CD entitled The Best Of Three Dog Night is a much better buy; you can enjoy much more music from Three Dog Night. Go for it!

Three Dog Night will always be remembered as a band that produced remarkably fine rock hits while they worked together. Their music stuns you with its passion and the melodies are catchy and instantly memorable.

I recommend this CD for Three Dog Night fans or for people who want to become more familiar with the fine artistry of Three Dog Night. Diehard fans will want The Best Of Three Dog Night and other CDs by this unforgettable band. People who enjoy 1970s rock music will enjoy this CD, too. Great job, Three Dog Night!

4 of 12 Recordings in Mono, not Stereo!!!!.......2006-12-21

The song selection is top notch--can't complain about that, unless, of course, they had filled up the CD with additional titles. My primary issue with this collection is that 4 of the 12 songs were recorded in mono format, not stereo!!! For a 20th Century Masters collection, I was expecting a masterful, Best of Collection. Instead, I got only some of what I wanted.

For those of you concerned, here's the playlist and notations as to whether the songs are in mono or stereo:

Great classic 70's pop-rock band and radio staple!.......2006-11-16

Excellent CD full of 3DN's most notable pop tunes, and great ones at that! They were a prolific 'hit machine' that helped define 70's radio, and bring back great memories of that era. Excellent songwriting skills and songs that truly stand the test of time, since their songs sound just as good today. This CD should, without question, be in your collection of all-time great pop-rock bands.

Just Enough.......2006-08-23

I used to have a bunch of 3DN albums on vinyl before I moved to Japan. Slowly, I am replacing my collections, and since I got this Best Of Three Dog Night several months back, I found it was just enough to satisfy the longings. It doesn't leave me wanting more.

More Than a 'Forrest Gump' Sountrack.......2006-06-01

Three Dog Night was the most successful singles band of the seventies. This collection is a valuable and obvious choice for fans and the uninitiated. The group may not have endured as well as Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles, but their following is not a fleeting one. Their biggest hits still have an instant appeal. Many of them were consciousness raising, including "Family of Man," "Black and White," and "Out in the Country". Each song could be parodied, but they were also eloquent and engaging enough to matter. They could also be considered maudlin with their love songs, especially "Old Fashioned Love Song," "Easy to Be Hard," and "One," making their suitability a matter of taste. While I recommend all of them, many understandably may not. However, some of the other songs provide greater substance and variety. "Celebrate" is a forgotten gem, and "Eli's Coming" showcases them the masters of the keyboard with an (oddly) entertaining and eerie song. Soul is done reasonably well with "Sure as I'm Sitting Here," "Try a Little Tenderness," and "Mama Told Me Not to Come". The latter is a tongue-in-cheek anti-drug song, written by songwriting humorist, Harry Nilsson. (A memoir reveals the lead singer as a drug semi-casualty.) Besides the perennial "Joy to the World," they lighten up considerably on "Shambala" and "The Show Must Go On". There are a few weak moments in the collection, but it is a better bet than any of their original albums (unless you are a rabid fan). Song for song, the variety, energy, and spirit make 'The Best of Three Dog Night' a fine collectible for seventies' afficionados.

A fantastic vocal ensemble!.......2005-12-28

In the far sixties there were many important vocal associations, Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Rascals, Blood, sweat and tears, Supremes, Beach Boys, Lettermen and Peter, Paul and Mary.

But suddenly from the late sixties emerged this notable band , who mixed rhythm and blues, folk with such original taste loaded with innovations, but fundamentally supported by an incredible vocal shades, impregnated with superb arrangements; Three dog night heaped up the scenery with his formidable easy going themes.

Who can forget his most emblematic theme: One, for instance. But along their triumphal career there were other winning numbers, such Eli' s coming, Mama told me not come, Celebrate, One man band, Joy to the world, Black and White and the always reminded soft ballades such Easy to be hard, Old fashioned song and Try a little tenderness.

There is not need to convince for all those who are in his forties, fifties or sixties. I should insist to propose the new generations to ask their parents, friends for this superb band, that created a special sound and earned a special place in the musical memory.

Go for this collection without reserves.

Few seventies groups scored as many consistently worthy AM radio chestnuts as Three Dog Night. Fewer still are represented by a "greatest hits" offering this comprehensive and enjoyable. Perhaps this is because no rock era act utilized as many top notch (though often unknown at the time) songwriters as 3DN. Paul Williams (OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG and two other hits), Leo Sayre (THE SHOW MUST GO ON), Randy Newman (MAMA TOLD ME NOT TO COME), Laura Nyro (ELI'S COMING), John Hiatt (SURE AS I'M SITTIN' HERE), Russ Ballard (LIAR), Nilsson (ONE), Allen Toussaint (PLAY SOMETHING SWEET), Dave Loggins (PIECES OF APRIL), and of course, Hoyt Axton (NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN and JOY TO THE WORLD) all benefitted from being covered. Of course, great songs ain't nothin' without great singers; Danny Hutton and particularly Cory Wells and Chuck Negron all had gospel/soul/rock chops to spare. Much of their music has scarcely aged, let alone stagnated, three decades after the fact. This compilation is twenty tracks long and nary (you should pardon the expression) a "dog" among them. This stuff gets better with age.......2005-02-10

I can't listen to "Joy to the World" without getting a smile on my face and a spring in my step. I can't listen to "Black and White" without feeling grateful for the civil rights improvements that have occured in my lifetime. I can't listen to Three Dog Night without loving their music. Their performances aren't flawless, but their spirit is rich. This particular CD has most of my favorites from Three Dog Night so I highly recommend this one.
