5 out of 5 stars I Don't Know What The Bad Reviews Are For.......2007-01-22

This is the Dead's second album, and for me my favorite. It really is a mind changer and what I love about it is that it lacks all the things regular songs have...the songs don't even have melodies.. It's a collision of notes that makes for me the best music in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Music in Psychedelic Clothing.......2007-01-18

The Grateful Dead were one of the first bands to be signed in the San Francisco deluge that happened from late '65 through '66. Shortly after their first record came out, Jerry and crew claimed that they wanted to get REALLY experimental by recording, among other things, the sound of the animals gooving at the Zoo and the "thick air" of Los Angeles (gee, could they have been talking to Brian Wilson about this?) Who knows if either one of those soundscapes made it onto "Anthem", but if not this second studio/live effort from the band never suffers from their absence. It's best to look at "Anthem" as an experiment not ony with different instruments (prepared piano and various exotic percussion are added to the usual electrified mix) but with different forms of music all rolled into one. It succeeds on every level...there are individual songs but they're more like distinct movements in a classical piece rather than three minute pop gems. Those with the patience to stick to it will find themselves rewarded by "Anthem" with subsequent listenings, which reveal the songcraft and musical detail embedded in the record the way multiple viewings of "Godfather" movies only add to the enjoyment of what you thought you knew before. This mix-the original-is essential and makes the '71 remix completely unnecessary. So if you have yet to hear it and you're a fan of the band, do not stop on tracks!

5 out of 5 stars Can you pass the Anthem test?.......2006-10-13

The band's first truely great album. Very creative and different from anything else. This album mixed live and studio recordings together to create a seemless jam that sounds like nothing else. The only breaks are the brief pause between Born Cross-Eyed and the break for the side change. The new bonus songs are from the night before Two From The Vault was recorded. Back in 1971, both Anthem and Aoxomoxoa were remixed, Anthem by Phil and Aoxomoxoa by Jerry. Phil later regretted remixing this album promising that next time it came out it would be the original mix. Thankfully, they went for the original July '68 mix for the cd versions of this release and not the crappy 7/71 remix.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit TOO Raw and Experimental.......2006-06-02

Here they are, only one studio album into their career, and for their second album, the Grateful Dead decide to dive headfirst into a sea of weirdness that is almost unfathomable. To anybody who listens to music in a linear fashion, this album is just too difficult to comprehend, or appreciate. Instead of compiling an album by arranging songs side by side, Anthem of the Sun is one gigantic collage of sound, weaving elements of studio recordings in and out, around live takes and then over and under random noise and processed sounds. For a casual listener, it's a mess. For a person in the throes of a hallucinogenic experience (which was admittedly their intended audience) it was a catalyst to another world.

Anthem of the Sun can only be said to `work' if the listener takes a semi-active role. It is by no means necessary to take acid to follow along on this trip (although God knows that would probably help), but it does take some patience and an open mind. There is little melody here to hum, and few musical passages that invite you to tap along. Lyrical ideas are opaque as well, leaving the listener to create the proper frame of mind to let such weirdness unfold on its own terms. In one spot, guitars reel about over a sea of percussion, only to dissolve into a chorus of kazoos. Elsewhere, a song fragment drifts in and out of the mix, as a live version of the same fragment competes for attention. Somewhere else, a live, bluesy jam featuring Pigpen suddenly vanishes underneath a song segment that runs by at three or four times its natural speed. If you can relax and hear Anthem of the Sun as a hippie-fied action painting done with sound and faders, then you'll do just fine and you'll probably appreciate what you hear. Casual listeners should be forewarned, though, that unless they can adapt their way of thinking, they might find themselves frustrated that there is hardly a single cohesive idea anywhere on the entire record. 5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It's been six years since these same performers got together to create one of the decade's more unusual experiments in musical alchemy. Beginning with the raw materials of early music and modern jazz, the four male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble joined with jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek to see what would happen when the proper measure of old music and new style were combined, shaped by the performers' considerable experience and collective aesthetic vision. The success of that recording, titled Officium, and subsequent concert performances paved the way for this second effort, continuing the performers' search for artistically meaningful, musically satisfying combinations of written music and improvisatory elements. The odd title of the new recording comes from a mystical poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, quoted in the liner notes and accompanied by pictures from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. Officium aficionados will notice that Mnemosyne is even more adventurous in its explorations, which range farther and farther from the printed page. Musical fragments and a general outline are the starting points for several pieces. Improvisation is more frequently and freely employed, but always adheres to an agreed stylistic framework. Alongside a Tallis hymn or a chant by Hildegard, we hear Iroquois and Peruvian song fragments, an ancient Greek tune, and a beautiful lullaby by Veljo Tormis. Garbarek's tasteful improvisations are appropriate additions, inspired commentaries. The Hilliards are even better than on Officium; their awareness and sensitivity brings everything together into a truly unified expression that shows the timelessness of music and reminds us that where rhythm, melody, and musical imagination join, different styles, centuries, and genres are not necessarily obstacles to compatibility. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars A winter"s night.......2005-07-23

Though I am not much of an expert in music as to write a good review, I have enjoyed Jan Garbarek's saxo for many years now, and most recently his previous work with the Hilliard Ensemble, "Officium".
What else can I say?
Just imagine a cold winter's night (and nights are cold these day in the Southern Hemisphere), cudled inside your home, by the fireplace, with the company of a good book, smoking your pipe, sipping some good french brandy and listening this marvelous music.
What else can compare to such an experience?
Tomás Linn

1 out of 5 stars horrible.......2005-01-13

Cheesy saxophone and Gregorian chants do not go together, or if they do, they'll end up sounding like this. The Hilliard Ensemble is wonderful and I love to listen to it, but not with a bunch of tacky and unnecessary smooth jazz lines over top.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely indeed.......2002-02-25

I was fortunate enough to see Garbarek and the Hillard Ensemble perform pieces from this disc in Tokyo; one of the true surprises and delights of the evening (which I haven't found on the CD yet) was Garbarek's decision to quote from Albert Ayler's "Ghosts" on one piece. You might wonder with a classical vocal group who focus on early music and modern avant-garde choral composition have to do with Albert Ayler -- it seems a difficult gap to bridge. Hearing this two disc set will do much to make it clear. There is something genuinely spiritually uplifting in this music; it never approaches the New Agey wallpaper of Garbarek's weakest disc, VISIBLE WORLD, however -- it's not a tritened, mass-consumable spirituality at work here. There is grief, suffering, sorrow, pain, and fear acknowledged and embraced in this music; and yet it is still life affirming and inspiring (and beautiful to dream to). The spiritual aspect of Ayler's music, of free jazz itself, deserved the acknowledgement; Ayler was one of the most spiritually uplifting jazzmen of the movement, which often spoke in the idiom of the spiritual -- it would have been just as well (though far less moving, somehow, and far less musically appropriate) to quote "A Love Supreme"). Don't be worried by the unusual combination of jazz and classical elements; as another reviewer notes, Garbarek's voice blends in perfectly with the rest of the group, sounds a part of the whole. You'll forget that choral music usually doesn't include a soprano sax in a surprisingly short time. (Note - Garbarek brought a tenor to do the Ayler bit; I really don't know if it's on these discs, as I haven't listened to them in completion yet, but he does play tenor sax on them, so we can hope). Highly recommended stuff. The art for the booklet, by the way, is taken from Ingmar Bergman's SEVENTH SEAL, which is very, very appropriate. People who like and admire Meredith Monk's music (particularly BOOK OF DAYS, her finest work, by me) will appreciate this greatly, too. And vice-versa.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2000-02-21

A fantastic journey through time and space, ranging from ancient Greece to present-day compositions by Garbarek. No less spirited than Officium, but much more varied. Whereas Officium was very much the Hilliards with Garbarek adding (at times rather exhibitionist) comments, here they play together almost as a band - and what a band! With beautiful packaging and stunning production, this is immensely enjoyable and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Death and Rebirth.......2005-08-17

"That's it for the Other One" is the best musical evocation of death and rebirth I know of. It is trip through the Tibetan Book of the Dead. No wonder the Dead are Grateful.

4 out of 5 stars Check out the remastered version instead.......2003-10-07

This is the Grateful Dead's second album. They have added Mickey Hart on drums, Tom Constanten on keyboards and Robert Hunter writing lyrics. The original LP cover had a blue background, but later versions of the LP had a white background. The CD cover has gone back to the original blue. This is the original CD. There is a new, remastered CD which contains 40 extra minutes of live material (mostly an extended version of Alligater).

This is one of the Dead's wierdest and wildest albums. There's a lot of space and psychodelic music. It is a mixture of studio and live recordings. There is only one real song on this album. The rest are long, extended suites. The Dead even goes back to it's jugband origins, playing Kazoos on one track.

The album starts out with the suite, That's It For the Other One, which bounces around in style. As this piece evolved in concert, much of the middle part would be dropped and the band would concentrate on the driving, simple "The Other One" part of the piece.

Alligater is a 15 minute live track. The middle of it sounds an awful lot like the Allman Brothers' Mountain Jam. The Allman Brothers took Donavan's song (First There is a) Mountain and stretched it out to 35 to 45 minutes. Since the Allman Brothers weren't formed until a year after Anthem of the Sun came out, it makes me think that they were influenced by the Dead.

Jerry Garcia's guitar playing was always evolving as he kept experimenting. Here, he sometimes sounds like the Allman Brothers, and sometimes sounds like the typical San Francisco psychodelic guitar player, similar to the Jefferson Airplane or Big Brother. Later, he would drop both those styles as he moved on to new things.

Overall, this is an interesting but wierd album. If you like the space music, this is the one to get. If you prefer songs, then get Aoxomoxoa or American Bueaty.

5 out of 5 stars The first Dead album I fell in love with.......2002-09-13

I was a 14 year old hippie back in 1968, and this was the first Grateful Dead album I'd ever heard. It was at one of those parties that lasted for days, people coming and going, and one record playing over and over on the stereo... The next day I sat down at my guitar and picked out "That's It For the Other One". The melody is still indelibly stuck in my mind.

This is the early dead at its finest- soaring melodies, extended compositions and solos, music you could just close your eyes and get inside. It still takes me back.

4 out of 5 stars Wild Experience.......2002-08-13

The Dead at their most "psychedelic", weaving together live and studio recordings, phasing things in and out, and generally trying their best to make some "trippy" music. This is the original "trippy" mix, not the more crisp and conservative mix that the band reissued later.

"Cryptical Envelopment"/"That's It For the Other One" is timeless. "New Potato Caboose, unfortunately, is more aimless. "Born Cross-Eyed" is a wild impressionistic finish to Side 1.

Side 2 combines live tapes of "Alligator" and "Caution" with the drum soloing and skitterish blues-based jamming that characterized performance of these tunes. As a bonus, the new (currently comes with the box set; will be the new version in future) digipack version of the CD contains about 30 minutes of the band playing this material live. It's a bit hard to hang with, it kind of puts me to sleep, but it's interesting to hear what they doing with this material live. Another version of "Caution", even more extended and very worth hearing, is on the Dick's Picks 16 CD (from 11/8/69).

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Man, Try the Kool-Aid..........2002-05-27

I'm really not a Grateful Dead fan, but I still consider this a classic. No other single record I know of captures the spirit of the '60's San Francisco music scene better than this...and besides that, the music is great, consistently interesting and engaging. A band who's second album was their best...imagine that!

5 out of 5 stars Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-01

"Henry Purcell looked like a Florentine prince, was hail-fellow-well-met in taven and taproom, wrote for the Church and also the stage and salon, was in fact, a most likeable young man as well as a great Master of Musick". Thus saith the historians, to which I heartily agree. For anyone to compose all the music that he did in a life-span of only 36 years is astounding to say the least! Except for his appointment as organist at the Chapel Royal and other churches, his compositions are the chief events of his life. His skill in counterpoint, his unique expressive voice and unparallelled gift for English text-setting appear in happy combination in his church music, and what better group to sing it, than Chanticleer!!!Chanticleer's male sopranos help create a timbre whose intensity and clarity make a fascinating alternative to the classic English cathedral sound with which this music is normally associated, thereby bringing to the forefront the more universal qualities of Purcell's art.
All of the selections on this disc are much recorded and quite famlliar to the early music 'crowd'. "Rejoice in the Lord alway" and "I was glad' were 2 anthems written for the coronation of James II.
A very notable selection is 'Now that the sun has veiled his light' best known as "An Evening Hymn". This is not strictly speaking a church piece, but rather a sacred song for solo voice intended for domestic use; very popular with countertenors.
The selection "O Lord, rebuke me not" is sung on this disc by 2 sopranists ( the term usually used for male sopranos). and it is hauntingly lovely.
Purcell's final anthem (not included in this collection) entitled 'Thou knowst Lord, the Secrets of our Hearts' was written for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1694;six months later it again drew tears when it was sung for the composer's buriel in Westminster Abbey.
Chanticleer is perfection; the individual voices are top quality displaying clear diction, sonorous tone quality and as a group, the perfect blend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2005-10-09

OK, I'm confused. Was that supposed to be a review? Phil Spector?!?

Anyway, on to something that makes sense. This is a wonderfully made recording that illustrates Purcell's unique and striking personality. Excellent performance of the standard you expect from Chanticleer. Two tracks are a cappella and ravishing, particularly "Hear My Prayer", a piece of music so daring, soaring, and ahead of its time that it can only be described as a singular work of art. The instrumental compliment on the rest of the disc is not only very prudent and well performed, but is also balanced to perfection with the voices in a way very rarely heard on CD. A must for any Baroque choral lover.

2 out of 5 stars Phil Meets Chanticleer.......2003-12-30

Phil Spector meets Chanticleer. Why in the world would a group so musically gifted as Chanticleer not let the words and music speak for themselves? I am sure many who are unfamiliar with Tudor and similar music from the C of E will think this is terrific. For them, listen to the pure simplicity of Men & Boys from St. Pauls, Kings College, etc.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-27

Purcell compositions for Queen Mary span the whole of her brief reign. He provided music for her coronation, on April 11,1689; for the formal celebraton of her birthday on April 30 each year; and for her funeral, on March 5, 1695. At the coronation of William and Mary his 'I was glad' was one of 9 anthems performed during this ceremony. Purcell, in his position as Abbey Organist had tailored the music with precision. The opening passage is in stately block chords-straightforward for the choir to co-ordinate while proceeding along the nave, and arriving in their places just in time to watch the conductor for the closing bars. Later in the service the 2nd anthem by Purcell was sung:"Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem",
The centerpiece of this disc is the Ode for Queen Mary's birthday"Now does the glorious day appear" and glorious it is!!! It is divided into 14 sections; some solos, some duets and some choruses. It was easily the finest royal ode he had as yet composed, and also the most richly scored; laid out for five part strings, the violas being divided. Thanks to this exotic scoring, the ode abounds in moments of gorgeous opulence. For Mary's funeral services (she died at the age of 33) Purcell composed 3 pieces all included in this disc and all memorable.
The performers include Westminster Abbey Choir; the New London Consort; soloists: sopranos Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb-countertenor Michael Chance-tenor Ian Bostridge-basses Stephen Richardson and Simon Birchall. All of this under the direction of Martin Neary.
The notable distinction of this recording is as follows and I quote from the accompanying jacket:"Complete music for Queen Mary's funeral, newly assembled and edited, and performed in Westminster Abbey by the Abbey Choir for the first time since 1695". The recording is beautifully adorned inside and out, and the sticker on the outside proclaims that it is music featured in the Westminster Abbey Funeral service fo Diana, Princess of Wales.

5 out of 5 stars Joy and sadness perfectly combined.......2000-02-19

This CD is subtitled "A Celebration of the Life and Death of Queen Mary" and it thus divides into two sections. To begin with, we hear a number of works written for the Queen during her life, among which are short songs by John Blow (including "The sullen years are past" which has never been recorded before) and a massive setting of one of many odes for the royal birthday celebrations by Henry Purcell - "Now does the glorious day appear," which is a sweeping and powerful work with a variety of ground bass arias, duets, recitatives, choruses and orchestral symphonies - all making for a fine and rewarding listening experience.

In the second section, the focus moves onto music written during the mourning period after Queen Mary's death. Purcell continues to prove himself the greatest composer of the time, in his semi-sacred songs (in Latin) mourning her death, and in the music he wrote for her funeral. This section is indeed a highlight of the disc as it attempts, in a very scholarly way, to recreate the funeral in the Abbey as it might have sounded in 1695, with the Funeral Sentences by Thomas Morley interspersed with Purcell's own material and a number of Farewell Marches for trumpets and drums only.

The members of the Abbey Choir under Martin Neary do an admirable job of stepping into the shoes of their forebears under Purcell; accompanied by the period instrument-equipped New London Consort, the sound is truly magnificent. In addition, a number of prestigious soloists appear, including Emma Kirkby and Ian Bostridge (undoubtedly key performers for capturing the purity and delicacy of this music), Michael Chance (who seems a little under-utilised), Stephen Richardson (a rich and profound bass voice if ever I heard one) along with members of the Abbey Choir itself. Of special note- one does not often find a choral CD on which all three senior musical officials at the cathedral (Organist, Assistant Organist and Organ Scholar) are heard playing, but this is one such recording: Martin Baker and Stephen Le Prevost fill in organ continuo parts in various places, as does Dr Neary himself (who also plays the harpsichord for most of the solo pieces).

Arc of Light have done it again- a recording of extreme loveliness, going right down to the packaging which features some beautiful artistry (in fact, the main cover photograph is given an explanation in the booklet notes owing to the special way in which it was produced). A true gem in all respects.

4 out of 5 stars Good music, okay performances.......1999-03-26

This disc presents a somewhat eclectic collection of music devoted to Queen Mary (mostly by Purcell, but by some other contemporaries as well). Despite the common theme I couldn't get rid of the feeling that the pieces didn't "click." Neither did the soloists sound at ease. Michael Chance, perhaps, deserves the most praise. But alas, some of the pieces that he normally sings (e.g. Incassum Lesbia) were given to sopranos, who couldn't do them nearly as much justice. The voice of one of the sopranos kept cracking up (don't know which one: the past-her-prime Emma Kirkby or whoever-she-is Evelyn Tubb). Ian Bostridge is undeniably a great performer, mainly known for his brilliant lieder interpretations. I don't want to say that baroque is not his cup of tea because he is vocally well suited to this repertory. Yet I didn't think he was as great in Purcell as many of his countrymen, such as John Mark Ainsley, Charles Daniels or Mark Padmore (to the extent one recording is enough of a basis to judge, which perhaps it is not). I don't want to be unfair, but I've heard Purcell performed better. This is not a bad recording, just not the best.
