Cornerstone

Editorial Reviews

If Styx didn't do enough to endear itself to a generation of prom-goers with its 1975 slow-dance classic "Lady," they closed the deal a few years later with Cornerstone's premiere hit, "Babe." Perhaps the prototypical I-love-you-but-I-just-gotta-go power ballad, the song was Styx's first No. 1 hit, and it propelled the album to platinum-plus status. Led by that track as well as "Why Me," another Top 40 hit, Cornerstone is Styx at their most accessible and melodic. The album experiments with some new sounds as well, with horns added to the mix on Dennis DeYoung's "Borrowed Time" and "Why Me" and mandolin on Tommy Shaw's "Boat on the River." If their album sales didn't offer the final word on the band's popularity at the close of the '70s, a 1979 Gallup poll did the trick: The group was named America's most popular rock band. It's you babe, indeed. --Daniel Durchholz

3 out of 5 stars The cornerstone (#9) to success or breakdown.......2007-07-04

After 'The Grand Illusion' and 'Pieces of Eight' there was little doubt back in the day that Styx would deliver another killer album. Not true at all. Okay, everyone, by now, knows the big radio hit, 'Babe' from DeYoung (the start of the sappy ballad - include with that 'First Time'- what was DeYoung thinking with this song, absolutely terrible), but little to be said really good about this album. Shaw delivers a couple of good hits like 'Lights' and 'Boat on the River', but this release didn't even come close to their previous releases. And for fans that had been listening to Styx since their inception, you got the sense that they were definitely heading in the marketable top 40 direction and away from their roots. Ultimately, this turned out to be a bad thing for the band as evidenced by the departure of Shaw a little bit later down the road. If you already own other Styx albums you'll find enough here to keep you happy. But, the sound is so different from their Wooden Nickel label days especially with James Young not doing alot of the lead vocals these days. He seems content now to be pigeon-holed into his one song-off or duet with Shaw. Get it anyway and judge for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars back and forth with some of the songs on this LP/CD.......2007-01-30

I am 44 years old, female and owned this when it came out in 1979...I still have it and it is a worn looking raggedy thing...I also now have the CD...I loved Styx back in the 70's and still do but am NOW more into the rock-ier songs they produced. I liked this LP when I was a teen and it was one I listened to along with others and silly as it sounds was therapy bc music back then was something I listened to on a constant basis-mostly harder rock and roll but Styx was my secret delite..
I have to say--then and now... my favorite song from that LP/Cd is by far " Love in the Midnight" written and sung by Tommy Shaw.

It always caught my emotions and still does. I can truthfully take or leave the rest of the LP esp Babe and The First Time which I never liked....someone mentioned saccharine overdose-- they are right about that...blech..

I do like Eddie tho even tho it is dated-- it is now interesting to listen to it and it is well written by JY... it is about Ted Kennedy running for president which he had considered back for 1980 and decided not to run as the Kennedy luck in high politics wasnt too probable.....and I do have a fondness for JY and Tommy Shaw...I didn't particularly like Boat on the River..I think this is one of Tommy's weakest songs... like a weak caribbean diddy...Never say Never by Tommy is just OK but somewhat sappy listening to it now ...Why Me is ok but weak too--somewhat whiny ....

Lights is a moderately decent tune -better than most of the stuff on this LP... Borrowed time is a powerful ballad music-wise but I dont like the "Yes/No" shouting part and "don't look now but here come the 80's"...reminds me an auctioneer...all in all it isn't one of my favorite Styx LPs but again it has a few decent songs and especially Love in the Midnight-- that to me is a timeless Deep Styx sleeper track that for me stands the test of time....

3 out of 5 stars Is This The Sellout Moment?.......2006-10-19

It would be easy to argue...and at the time of the release I was one of many loyal Styx fans to believe it...that this was the beginning of the end. "Babe" was a huge worldwide hit, and "First Time" is another supremely commercial power ballad. So when we look beyond the commercialism..this still isn't the best of efforts for this band. "Borrowed Time" is an attempt to move into a new decade, but seems forced; "Eddie" is far from James Young's best effort, and Tommy Shaw's "Lights" and "Boat on the River" are hardly memorable. Of particular interest is that "Boat on the River" was a huge hit in Europe and helped to propel the band to superstardom throughout the continent. But overall, while "Babe" defines the band to the heretofore uninitiated, "Cornerstone" is a poor definition of Styx's career.

5 out of 5 stars two words BUY IT.......2006-09-10

Styx's 9th album and their 3rd in a string of 5 multi-platinum albums. This condidered by many their "ballad album" but really there are only 2 ballads in this album which means there is 7 other songs on here that really are enjoyable.

My Favorites on this one include the #1 hit "Babe" the second ballad "First Time" the hard-rocker "Borrowed Time" the thought provoking song "Lights" the catchy tune "Why Me" and the off-beat almost polkaish song "Boat On The River".

This is a great album to both continue and finish your collection with if you are a music fan you will buy this I know you will. This is truly a must have.

3 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Sides.......2006-05-30

This album is on the shortlist of maybe a dozen or so that I nostalgically remember hearing from my Dad's stereo while I was growing up. I still like it, but with time and distance you have to admit that on the whole, it's not one of Styx's greatest works because the quality songs are so unevenly split: it's almost as if the original vinyl album was split into A and B sides, with all the secondary material relegated to the B-side as if in an old 45 release.

Side one of the vinyl album was excellent. Lights, Why Me, Never Say Never, Babe (which was, at one time, horrendously overplayed - but today it's all but forgotten by mainstream listeners and hence almost fresh again). Boat on the River is pleasant enough but nothing special.

Side two of the vinyl was merely decent. I have never been able to get very worked up over Eddie, Love in the Midnight, or (god help us for the saccharine overdose) First Time. Borrowed Time is quite good. As a result, back in the dark ages when I was about 13 and had to actually flip over albums on my Dad's turntable, I often didn't bother.

Album Description

Slightly Stoopid possesses a unique dynamic. They have the sort of musical kinship that is clearly the result of years spent growing up together in one of Southern California's premiere surf towns and the relentless pursuit of creating the quintessential soundtrack for the lifestyle that exists there. Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald are perfect musical counterparts, complementing each other in the realm of elctric and acoustic rock, reggae, dub, blues, hip-hop, punk and metal. Boasting dual front men, Slightly Stoopid yields a rare chemistry. Both are multi-instrumental, often switching effortlessly from bass to guitar in the middle of their shows, continuously balancing their vocal stylings and fresh harmonies and always converging into songs that are good enough to be respected by the very artists who inspire them.

4 out of 5 stars A good preview.......2006-08-01

These guys are amazing musicians; perfect together - a modern Simon and Garfunkel. This album is pretty good on it's own, basically the best modern rock out there, if you'll call it that. It's hard to call it anything because these guys are totally unique; it's a sound I've been lookin for but haven't found in other artists. Even better are there next two albums, and more diverse.

5 out of 5 stars BOMB!.......2006-03-10

If you like the guitar and some chill mellow music, you gotta have this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Slighly Stoopid.......2006-01-01

This album in my opinion is by far slightly stoopid's best. I don't really care for most of their other music just because they sound so "white". This is pure reggae.

5 out of 5 stars slightly stoopid acoustic rocks .......2005-09-12

this is the best cd i have heard in a long time if you like acoustic music with BADARSE guitar playing you will love this cd. these guys tear up the guitar with there funky basslines and pounding rythm

4 out of 5 stars Their best cd?.......2005-09-09

There are some gems of songs on the other cd's they have, but I don't care for a lot of their faster punk songs, and some of them are basically crap. This cd I listen to start to finish without skipping over songs. White boys talking with a Jamaican accent in between songs is rather silly, but they make up for it with songs like "Fireshot", "Sensi" and "Couldn't get High". "Wiseman" is also a great song.

Definitely worth the purchase.

Album Description

Kona, Hawaii: think lush natural landscapes, divine inspiration and kids with nothing to do except find the next rage and invent slicker ways to pick up girls. Add metal and rock/dancehall influences to Hawaiian spirit, humor and ridiculously good looks - and you got Pepper. "Give'n It" was originally recorded in late 1997 in the only studio that existed in Kona at the time. Pepper caught the attention of fans from all corners, particularly Volcom Entertainment. After packing up all their belongings and heading to California, Pepper scored dates with established artists like Born Jamericans, Shaggy, Eek-A-Mouse, Burning Spear, Pato Banton & Secret Hate, were featured on XBox and Transworld Surf & Snow games, and played an entire run on the Warped Tour 2001, paying their dues by building the stage and pumping their signature Kona-dub-rock into the hearts of fans from state to state. It is edgy, lush, rocking, melodic, innovative, heart-grabbing and a good ride. It is Pepper.

3 out of 5 stars Fun music, but not very original.......2006-12-15

I realize I'm giving this three stars and everyone else has given it five. You'll have to decide for yourself, but I think my score is more justified. Pepper is a fun band with a classic "feel-good" ska/reggae/punk sound ... like Sublime as others have noted. But if you are, or where, a Sublime fan you will ultimately find Pepper disappointing. Not because they are bad, in fact they are pretty fun, but because they never get beyond "fun." Sublime had a certain edge (mostly misogynistic), and unpredictability that Pepper lacks. Maybe with time they'll move past repetitive imitation and find something that makes them unique and interesting. I imagine there ought to be something unique about living and working in Kona?

Don't take all this as a negative review. As long as you don't expect too much (and who really expects a CD to change their life?), Pepper is a good listen. I recommend you try it if you enjoy Sublime and need something new to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure.......2006-03-29

I had never heard of Pepper until I was in Hawaii this last week and saw them at the Waikiki Shell with 311. They were an awesome band to see live, and if your looking for a sound that isn't blared all over the radio these guys are it. They do definetly remind me of Sublime, but with thier own Hawaiian twist. I recommend thier music to anyone. They should be on tour this summer with 311 so go and check them out.

5 out of 5 stars Don't know what you're missing.......2005-03-30

Pepper is one of the sickest bands out there. I finally got to see them in concert on Saturday the 26th. I have all their CD's but it was awesome to see them in concert. You WILL NOT be disappointed with Pepper.

5 out of 5 stars Darren.......2004-11-07

Ok ive heard some of they're stuff and ive read the editors description of Kona Hawaii, and seeing that ive been there hand have hung out with the locals of the town, its all very true. I am about to purchase this album because i really love the reggea scene that i saw while I was in Kona.

5 out of 5 stars Brad Nowell may be dead, but his musical influence lives on........2003-10-31

For everyone who was bummed when Sublime ended, your prayers have been answered. This band has a great sound to them and is similar to Sublime and Slightly stoopid. Keep an open mind and you'll find there is alot of music out there to enjoy.

"With melodies full of sunshine & lyrics dipped in darkness, Australia's Beautiful Girls graft a heady modern groove onto something Black Uhuru and others began." -- RELIX

"I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin', summertime vibe!" -- G LOVE

"With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night." -- SNAP (Australia)

The Beautiful Girls are back with Water, their second U.S. release on Cornerstone RAS. After releasing last year's We're Already Gone to amazing reviews and touring the nation to support it, the guys from down under knew a follow-up album and another tour was a no-brainer. Taking songs from their extensive Aussie catalog, they put together this eleven-song gem that takes you on a kiwi holiday filled with smooth guitars and soothing vocals. Singer/songwriter Mat McHugh really shows off his range with feel-good tracks "Music" and "Good Times" while expressing personal heartbreak on a track like "Need to Give This Broken Heart Away." Songs for every mood await you on this triumphant sophomore release from everyone's favorite Australian import since Yahoo Serious ...ok, Mel Gibson ... ok, Fosters. The celebratory spirit behind tribute albums doesn't suit every subject. More than a single swaggering rock star has come off as limp and self-loving, and thoughtful chanteuses have gone sappy or sour--which is why saluting the California garage punks of Sublime makes a lot of sense. For one thing, it's nearly impossible to screw up the collapsed band's sunny, to-hell-with-it vibe--its music is a mood encapsulated--and for another, any artist cool enough to take on one of its songs knows instinctively to embrace the ska sensibility and not skimp on energy. What we get with Look at All the Love, is a party with all the right props. No Doubt was an obvious choice and, on the disc's only live track, "DJ's," Gwen Stefani turns in a mid-speed sway-and-bobber; Jack Johnson chills on "Badfish/Boss DJ"; G. Love goes for funk-rock broke with "Greatest Hits"; and the artful Greyboy Allstars send "Doin Time" to jazz school. A single caveat: Hipsters who followed Sublime in its mid-90s heyday and have since had kids should order tiny earplugs with their copies. Fishbone does an admirable job with "Date Rape," but it's still as profane as ever. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

"An impressively diverse cast of musicians from a wide range of genres [show] just how much Sublime's music transcends classification ... nothing short of stellar." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE

"Deliciously eclectic." - CMJ

"A tribute to Sublime as big as Bradley Nowell's heart and as expansive as the band's musical vision." - OC WEEKLY

The evening of October 24, 2005 was one very special night in music. The Music Box at Fonda Theater played host to Look at All the Love We Found: A Tribute to Sublime LIVE, a benefit concert to honor and celebrate the legacy of one of most influential bands of the nineties as well as to raise funds for those in need. Artists like Los Lobos, Unwritten Law, Ozomatli, Blackalicious, Fishbone, and The Ziggens came together for one night only to put on a show for the ages. And, to top it off, many of the artists from the evening (as well as some surprise special guests) teamed up to belt out Sublime classics in the ultimate jam session. Now, everyone can relive that magical night with this special CD+DVD combo!

The audio CD contains never-before-heard covers of Sublime hits and fan favorites, from a brand-new studio recording of "Ebin" by The Banned with Chuck D (Public Enemy) to a rockin' live version of Fishbone's "Date Rape." These incredible tracks were not featured on the Look at All the Love We Found CD, and can only be found here!

The DVD features include a performance of "Pawn Shop" with original Sublime member Bud Gaugh on drums, a music video for Fishbone's version of "Date Rape," and backstage interviews with Los Lobos, MURS, Unwritten Law, and more. It also includes an in-depth photo slideshow and a behind-the-scenes look at the all-star jam rehearsal that included Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta), Eric Wilson (Sublime), and many more.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix or Genres.......2007-06-18

This album is great for anyone who loves Sublime, but isn't afraid to hear their songs in a new way. I especially love the remix of "Get Out" and Jack Johnson's version of "Bad Fish".

3 out of 5 stars Nice sentiment - poor execution.......2006-02-25

I bought this album on the recommendation of a friend after we had a conversation about Sublime... we both really liked Sublime's music and he told me how great this CD was, so I picked it up. Unfortunately, I can't agree that the CD is that "great." I enjoyed one or two tracks, and I really laud the effort that went into them - it's never easy to cover another band's hits. But some of the songs are just bad - and with most of them I know I'd rather just hear the actual version. If you like covers and want to hear a bunch of different bands pay tribute to a great band that is no more, pick up this CD. Otherwise, just put in "40 oz. to Freedom" or "Sublime" and listen to the masters at work.

3 out of 5 stars If you are a true sublime you'll want to hear this.......2005-12-21

Obviously no one can do a Sublime song better than Sublime but what I like about this album is how everyone put their own style into each of the songs. They didn't try to sound like Sublime but at the same time, you can still imagine Sublime being involved with the making of these songs. The book insert has a little input from each artist on what Sublime meant to them which I enjoyed reading.

Notable tracks are Jack Johnson's version of Badfish/Boss DJ and Abstract Rude's Waiting for my Ruca. Los Lobos did a great job on Pawn Shop as well.

4 out of 5 stars Decidedly Good.......2005-10-21

I've heard the originals to almost all of these songs many times, so naturally I don't really have the same affinity for these that I do the originals. That being said, I like how diverse the sound is, instead of being true covers, the various artists take liberty to change/add lyrics and create completely different sounding songs than the originals.

The only reason that it's not a 5 is because of the track by No Doubt. Jesus christ I got about 5 seconds into it before I skipped to the next track. What where they thinking?

4 out of 5 stars an albom for the true sublime fans.......2005-10-12

first off, to all the haters: every band on this cd is like perfect. they are all bands that are willing to take a risk, no matter how much the fans whine. bradley would have been proud that such a wide, diverse group of people came together in the name of sublime. im sure he would be estatic to hear great groups like los lobos, spearhead, fishbone, ozomatli, and the one and only Michael F. Watt come to add flavor. new schoolers like filibuster and bargain music are obvious students of the sublime stylee and a smart choice. i am particularly piss'd at those who say avail was a bad choice. BRADLEY LOVED AVAIL!!!!!!!!(check the DVD). it just goes to show how little people actually know about sublime.

to the fans: this is basically an album of interpretations. each artist shows the listener why sublime is cool to them. it is fun to hear the individual spins each band puts on classic sublime joints. i loved pennywise doing "same in the end". also Los Lobos comes hard on "Pawn Shop".G-Love has a very cool take on one of the most underrated sublime songs "greatest hits". jack johnson comes with a typical jack johnson output, which isnt anything bad.the best is the Ziggens cover of "Paddle Out". the ziggens and sublime; 'nuf said.

overall this album isnt for people who want to hear a sublime cd. those people should all go buy "40 oz." and go kill themselves. its for those who want to hear others tell why they love sublime in song, and pay their respects to the masters of eclectic urban music.im sure bradley is smiling down on those who do.

Album Description

"I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin', summertime vibe!" - G LOVE

"They're catchy, familiar, but still refreshing." - THE DRUM MEDIA (Australia)

"With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night." - SNAP (Australia)

We're Already Gone exceeds expectation in instrumentation, performance and songcraft. Keyboards, a brass section, melodica and harp solos move the album forward, and the rhythm section's time spent on the road is evident. It swings!

Like its predecessors, We're Already Gone is a raw album and a collision of styles. It occasionally dips into the same pool of influence as other material from TBG, but that's where the similarities end. The songs, for the most part, are darker - though there are still trademark moments of melodic beauty. Mostly, it is a collision of structure and riff; a mix of art, dub and rock.

5 out of 5 stars BOB MARLEY'S ILLEGITAMATE SONS ROCK REGGAE.......2006-10-20

I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS BAND BEFORE I PICKED UP THE CD. I PICKED UP THIS CD BECAUSE IN ONE REVIEW IT SAID: "THE MELODIES OF BEN HARPER AND THE SHEER POWER OF BOB MARLEY." THE TRUTH IS THAT THEY ARE 100 TIMES BETTER THAN BEN HARPER, AND IF BOB MARLEY WERE ALIVE TODAY, HE WOULD HAVE THIS BAND OPEN UP FOR HIM FOREVER! BOTTOM LINE: THIS IS THE BEST CD I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE, AND I'VE HEARD OVER 100,000 CD IN MY LIFE - SO FAR. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. PRACTICALLY EVERY SONG IS A FUTURE CLASSIC. 2. THE MUSICIANSHIP IS STUPENDIUS! 3. YOU WILL LOSE ABOUT 5 POUNDS A DAY FROM ALL OF THE UNCONTROLLABLE DANCING YOU WILL BE DOING ONCE YOU PRESS PLAY ON YOUR CD PLAYER. AND FINALLY, IF YOU ARE DEPRESSED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, YOU WILL BE SMILING, HAPPY, AND 100 PERCENT CONTENT AFTER JUST ONE LISTEN TO THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS.

4 out of 5 stars instant pick me up.... this CD is a must have.......2006-08-08

i got this cd after i had "learn yourself" for about a year and i love it ten times more. this cd is not really that alike to their first album and i would reccomend buying this one first if you have never heard them because it kind of touches ground on their different talents within the group moreso than learn yourself which is mainly acoustic.

Album Description

Born in Bermuda, Mishka lived with his parents on a sailboat from the age of three onwards. Lyrically, his favorite similes are of the sea - he has a bulging notebook of "ocean songs." In conversation, he looks back without evident nostalgia or myth-making on an early life growing up at sea. While other children were glued to the television and video games, Mishka was offered endless hours in which to reflect, draw, read and write.

Fast-forward to the present, and you find a man in his mid-twenties whose songs sound like the work of a young Sam Cooke mixed with shades of Bob Marley and that indefinable something that heralds a great pop record. Attempting to analyze that "X factor" only adds to the mystery. As Mishka reminds us: "People always check out your influences, but you don't really know what your influences are. It might be a bird singing while you're walking down the street or a breeze going past you. That could be what makes you want to write a song."

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2007-07-12

I enjoyed the first Mishka cd. But this one is by far the best. The first album has alot of nice melodies that stick in your head. But One Tree is deeper and more complex with better production. Its become one of my favorite reggae cd's

1 out of 5 stars Confused... and disappointed...........2007-02-28

I had the same problem as another reviewer. I placed the new CD into my drive and it prompted me to install "FED LOG" -- some sort of governmental search program. I have found information on the web on Fed Log but it seems to be some sort of restricted software. After hearing Mishka on his website I was eager to purchase the CD, but there is NO MUSIC on this CD, it's the Fed Log program only. What's the deal??

1 out of 5 stars Where is the music?.......2007-01-15

We bought the CD as a gift and there was no music on the CD. Instead there was a computer program. It was a database access program and no MUSIC. We called Amazon and discussed and received no resolution.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING.......2007-01-04

You know the CD's that just strike a chord deep inside? This is one of those. It gets to the heart of life. Pure and simple beautiful music from the soul. THE WHOLE CD IS GREAT FROM START TO FINISH. Mishka's One Tree is a necessity for any true music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.......2006-07-03

It was a real coincidence that I discovered Mishka. I absolutely loved his first CD and I think the second one is equally as wonderful as the first. Last night I played it for two of my friends and they are hooked. I can't wait to hear more from Mishka. "One Tree" is well worth purchasing.

    Album Description

"The Los Angeles hip-hop artist known as 2Mex spouts complex lines of verse as naturally as if he were breathing and his freestyle during live shows defines the ease with which he slides the world's tensions and issues into narrow caverns of rhyme and repetition." - DUSTED

"L.A. underground hero!" - MEAN STREET

Hailing from mid-city Los Angeles, indie-rap heavyweight 2Mex began building his name at the legendary Good Life Café, which has spawned tons of luminaries such as Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude and Jurassic 5, just to name a few.

2Mex is coined by many as the "hardest working man in underground hip-hop." Now, he has enlisted the efforts of superior beatmaker/rapper Life Rexall for $martyr. A lifetime member of the L.A. underground legends The Shapeshifters, Life Rexall has reached a new level in the game with his bright-vibed production and thought-provoking word wizardry.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most slept on album of 2006! (4.5 Stars).......2006-06-29

This album will blow your mind. Not in the since of being amazing, although it is, but in the since of literally expanding your thoughts to another level. 2Mex and Life Rexall have been making noise in their respective crews the Visionaries & LA's legendary Shape shifters crew for years. As they combine to become $martyr or "money symbol martyrs" you can't help but see the truth in what they are speaking on. Hip Hop and the artists who populate the diluted genre are more and more frequently looking for that dollar. Not that there is anything wrong with trying to make a buck, as they point out on the hilarious and probably oh so true cut "Full Court Pressure" (9) where they breakdown the issues with promoters not paying up after shows and fans who drive escalades and don't buy their albums. You can be lookin to get paid, it's when you align yourself with that dollar sign and forget about the art and culture your supposed to be representing. As cliché as it sounds 2Mex & Rexall "represent" for real and keep you on your toes, never sure what your gonna get. One minute it's some boom bap hardcore type hip hop, the next it's a love song, and the whole damn time it is what they do best: quality, fun hip hop that is their for your mind as much as it is for your neighborhood block party on Saturday night!
