More noise from the Noise Machine from Flint, Michigan.......2007-03-30
I really thought, when I bought this LP, that this would be an improvement. There is a keyboard mix on the first cut, but then Farner recycles one of his boring, repetitive guitar breaks and the record takes an artistic skid from there.
I notice the CD has a live version of "I'm Your Captain." This is one of the band's better tunes, having been played ad nauseum on your favorite album rock station. But the instrumentation is stretched out sans improvisation and it all gets tired.
That a new generation even thinks this band is worth anything must be a sad commentary on the state of modern rock and pop music.
Footnote: The LP jacket was ROUND and shaped like a huge coin. I'ts corny, but far catchier than the insipid music found inside.
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD DELIVERS SOME E. PLURIBUS FUNK. .......2007-02-28
I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "E. PLURIBUS FUNK" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of America's favorite sons. I give you one of Flint, Michigan's pride and joy's, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. This legendary album was originally released in 1971 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Capitol Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being the three-man band that represented the people. With that in mind, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD also let their music do all the talking. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is the only three-man band that I would even consider comparing to the legendary CREAM. When guitarist Mark Farner teamed up and joined forces with drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher, A real true partnership and bond would develop and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would be born and take Rock n' Roll by storm. At this point in the band's career, they were burning hot from the successful 1970 album "CLOSER TO HOME." With the hit single "I'm Your Captain" still burning up the charts, it was time for GRAND FUNK RAILROAD to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up to the successful "CLOSER TO HOME" album. After some time flew by, the band would evolve from the recording studio with a new completed album and hand it in to Capitol Records. The result is the legendary Rockin' album "E. PLURIBUS FUNK." In my opinion, "E. PLURIBUS FUNK is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. "E. PLURIBUS FUNK" is a great tribute to a legendary band and is a true testament of three extremely talented musicians that truly knew how to rock. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD was definitely ahead of their time. When you hear this album, you will know exactly what I mean. And yes, THIS ALBUM DOES KICK A*S.
Now lets get to the music, if you want to hear the REAL ROCKERS on this album, listen to the a*s kicking Rocker "Foot-Stompin' Music," the anti-war Rocker with a message, "People, Lets Stop The War," the breathtaking "I Come Tumblin'," the groundbreaking Rocker "No Lies" and the incredible slow turned fast paced Rocker "Loneliness."
The other songs such as "Upsetter" and "Save The Land" are also very good Rockers that contribute's well and give's the album an additional lift of life. Farner plays his guitar riffs with such determination that he doesn't know when to let up. Brewer plays drums with such skill that he adds so much blistering power to the music. Brewer's timing is perfect for the music and it shows on this album. Schacher bass arrangements blend and compliment the other two members perfectly. Put all three of these combinations together and you get some of the greatest Rock n' Roll music you've ever heard.
Overall, this is one hell of an a*s kicking album and I dare you to seek and check it out. Believe me, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has already proven to stand the test of time and will definitely be around always to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD has definitely had their shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their whole career. The GRAND FUNK story or legend does not end here. A few years back, I saw the story of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in the BEHIND THE MUSIC series shown on MTV. You would never think or believe that the IRS can break the band up and make them pay their taxes. Believe it or not, it really happened. This was all the result of their crooked Manager named Terry Knight. Terry Knight was keeping all of the money for himself and not giving any of the other three a portion of what they were entitled to. By the time Knight was done with the band, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD didn't have a cent left to their name and Knight took all their instruments and sold them. When Knight left GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, the band didn't even get to keep the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD name. After all of these incidents happened, GRAND FUNK'S career was all but over. In reality, it would take many years before GRAND FUNK RAILROAD would reunite and want to perform again. With this in mind, there would be other stories and tales that would need to be conquered, told and written into new pages and chapters of the GRAND FUNK RAILROAD story. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read further about at a later date. So here's to you Mark, Don and Mel. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GRAND FUNK LIVES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
already for flinging.......2006-11-28
The album cover itself was a premenition in itself. It came in a round cover, already for flinging....Actually the album wasn't that bad.
It contained some good rockers and the long closer "loneliness"...it's not classic but just a good old fashioned rock album
FOOTSTOMPIN' MUSIC!!.......2006-05-09
I remember when Grand Funk was to play Shea Stadium in New York City back in the day and when I got off the train to get a ticket, I took one look at the huge line and turned back. The critics never much cared for this band but I have no use for critics. Their opinions don't run my life. Grand Funk was an underrated band and I was a huge fan. I still remember my band at the time playing 'Aimless Lady' and a few other GF nuggets.
The rhythm section of Don Brewer and Mel Schacher was damn good. I never hear drummers mention Don Brewer as an influence but I loved the guy's playing. Sure, he was no Mike Portnoy but so what. I have not heard this remastered CD, I still have it on vinyl and I think it kicks butt! 'Footstompin' Music' is a song I used to blast, great way to start things off. 'I Come Tumblin', 'Upsetter', 'People Let's Stop The War' are great rock tunes and the band jams their butts off. The bass guitar sound on the vinyl recording is fantastic. I will gladly take Grand Funk over a lot of the crap that is out their today. These guys knew how to rock. And for the critics who had didn't have a kind word to say about GF, I didn't care then and I care even less now!!

Go buy a turntable!!.......2006-04-20
This album sounds atrocious. The remastering job is a joke. I'm always amazed how record companies try to get you to buy the same album over and over again and in this case the CD. They use big words that sound good like "Digitally remastered"+"24 bit mixing" etc. The first cut of this horrible sounding rerelease had an usually amount of background hiss. Same was true of the second song. Hiss has never bothered me historically but in this case it did. What tapes were they using I wonder? The guitar sounds brittle and overall it was hard for me to judge the music since this CD sounded so awful. However, the bonus live tracks sound great and are packed full of dynamite. I have heard tracks from this album on vinyl and they sounded much better.

Their downfall begins here.......2004-11-01
Let's have it straight right from the beginning, this is a pretty good album. It may be not the best introduction to the band's music, but it stands quite strong in GFR discography. And it was selling pretty well, too. #5 in Billboard's chart, plus 2 singles from a 7-songs-long LP. Nice, eh?
However, to me this CD marks the beginning of Grand Funk Railroad's fall into mainstream and generic arena-rock realm. "E Pluribus Funk" shows the band that doesn't want to develop songwriting, but instead chooses to implement very simple melodic hooks, primitive groove and very plain singing. Even attempts to spice the things up with some funky guitar riffing and studio jamming doesn't help much. The band still shows inspiration for the most part of this album, but, as I said, the mainstream trend already shows itself too obviously here.
"E Pluribus Funk" is good to listen to, but once it's over, you don't have much to recall, with about the only exception being the fastest song here and the best single, "Foot-stompin' Music". GFR only went downhill from here, and their unsurpassed masterpieces are "Closer to Home" and "Survival". To the newcomers I'd recommend to start with them.
Buy it just for "Loneliness".......2002-05-11
I don't remember why I bought the cassette back in 1972 since I knew absolutely nothing about GFR, but I fell in love with "Loneliness." When the orchestra comes in, I am just carried away. The cassette is gone, the album is old -- just like me -- and now I'm going to get E Pluribus Funk on CD for myself for Mother's Day (I have five kids, six grandkids now). I can hardly wait to be carried away again with "Loneliness."
A Must Have.......2002-01-13
A lot of great GrandFunk on this one.Sound quality is good and every song a real rocker.A must have for GrandFunk fans.
SURELY ONE OF THE BEST OF ALL TIME.......2000-04-13
I don't know how many rocords, cassettes I have worn out listening to. CD's do last longer. If you're not a big Funk fan, I invite you to listen to this one. I think you will become one. I got the unique oportunity to meet and visit with the band a few years ago, and they are just as real and genuine as their music. I saw them in concert last year and they haven't lost anything, if anything, they have meshed their spirit, soul and talents even more. I believe this is one of their best recordings, and hope you will too.
Another classic by GFR.......1999-11-30
I remember listening to this album in high school and bringing the Lp to class when my English teacher let us bring an album. I played PEOPLE LET'S STOP THE WAR and a lot of feet were moving and hands were clapping by the end of the song. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to know the true GFR sound. Excellent sound on the remastered version.

The heaviest and the best ...........2001-08-20
E Pluribus Funk has everything I could ever ask for: good songwriting, a killer-sound (heavier than on the other albums)and superb vocals. Their blues and jazz influences make place for groovy hard rock on the entire album. I was told that the change of sound had a lot to do with Mark picking up a Gibson SG for this record, but the songwriting is more agressive too. Only on "Loneliness" they take some time to relax, but it builds up to a climax and perfectly closes the curtains on this album. This is what I call "Good singing, good playing" !
Timeless Rock!.......2000-12-25
This music (album) has rocked me since day 1! My grandmother (rip) bought this for me because I asked her to. She had no clue that it would help to make me the 'dude' I am today. Don't miss out. If you like Grand Funk, you need this cd. It does't come much better than this. Check out the bass line on 'People, Let's Stop The War.'
