Eliminator
Editorial Reviews

ZZ Top's ninth studio album truly captured the mood of the times. Released as MTV was learning to crawl, the videos of the Lone Star trio's droll, masculine anthems were staples on the nascent music channel, making the world think that all the women in Texas looked like Jerry Hall--which wasn't far from the truth in 1983. And even if it wasn't completely accurate, listeners could at least visit a world where both cars and woman were fast and available. Billy Gibbons's roaring guitar licks streaked across songs with the speed of a young Hendrix. Even though the lyrics are often ham-fisted, all is forgiven for the pleasure of just letting the ZZ Top locomotive mow you down. While "Gimme All Your Loving," "Legs," and the satirically dynamic "Sharp Dressed Man" ruled the airwaves, the real gems here are the thundering "I've Got the Six" and the equally bombastic "Bad Girl," which showcase's Dusty Hill's heart-stopping drumming and Frank Beard's sturdy bass. Eliminator also marks the first time that the rough-and-tumble outfit turned to studio wizardry to goose up their meat-and-potatoes boogie. And while some early fans may have been dismayed, truth be told, their new studio sophistication added finesse and depth to ZZ Top. --Jaan Uhelszki

ZZ's classic breakout album.......2007-02-20
Eliminator marked the transformation of ZZ Top from a Texas blues band to an international pop phenomenon. The album - with it's picked up pace and synthesizers - definitely showed a move into the mainstream, but they didn't lose ZZ fans in the process. Sharp Dressed Man and Legs became Top's two most famous songs, even to this day. Gimme All Your Lovin', Got Me Under Pressure and TV Dinners add classics that show the range of blues, pop and even comedy. The depth of the album reads almost like a Greatest Hits album, explaining the album's longevity. A real classic.
ZZ Top for President!
Brought ZZ Top to the masses .......2007-01-29
Released in 1983, ZZ Top's 8th album, Eliminator, would break them into their mainstream. Prior to this, the blues-rock band was primarily a staple of album rock radio as tunes like "Tube Snake Boogie", "Tush", "La Grange", and "I Thank You", while popular, weren't exactly the toast of the pop charts. Therefore, ZZ Top made two changes to their arsenal that would help make them superstars. The first was adding a hint of synthesizer to their sound that made their songs more danceable while not sounding poppy. The second change was more visual as they embraced MTV by producing a string of memorable videos to complement their songs. As a result, ZZ Top had gained a whole new audience while retaining most of their faithful followers, leading Eliminator to stay in the Billboard Top 40 albums for over a year and a half and become their biggest selling album.
The album opens with "Gimme All Your Lovin'", which would be an MTV staple in the early-80's and continues to receive generous airplay on classic rock radio. While not released as a single, "Got Me Under Pressure" would also become a popular track that you still hear once in a while. "Sharp Dressed Man" would become their second big MTV hit and is contains their most famous riff (although some would argue that "La Grange" should gain this honor). The third big MTV staple would be the catchy track "Legs" that would prove so popular that the song would become the band's first Top 10 hit. While all of these tunes have become classics, all of the remaining tracks are nearly on the same level. "TV Dinners", which also had an MTV video, would become a minor hit single while the mid-tempo "I Need You Tonight" is a great track featuring a wicked guitar solo from Billy Gibbons. Another strong track is "Thug", which sounds like a piece of space funk with its sound effects and Dusty Hill's slap bass. The remaining tracks, "I Got the Six", "Dirty Dog", "If I Could Only Flag Her Down", and "Bad Girl" are all strong hard rockers that are actually helped by the updated production. All told, Eliminator would bring ZZ Top to the masses and along with their `70s releases Tres Hombres and Deguello, is their best work.
ZZ IS ALWAYS TOPS .......2007-01-19
If you love rock and roll you cant loose with ZZ.I liked this one better than TRES HOMBRES. TURN IT UP,AND YOU WILL MOVE.
My Favorite ZZ Top Album.......2006-12-24
I love this album, I wore out the cassette version when I was a teenager and now I have the CD. Every song is great, it's one of those rare CDs that I can play all the way through and enjoy every song. Everyone says that they couldn't believe that ZZ Top was being played on MTV back then, but you have to consider that MTV was a different animal back in 1983, you could turn on MTV back then and actually hear some good music. MTV wasn't the piece of crap waste that it is these days with their whiny reality shows and non-stop hip hop music. Anyway, I really like my other ZZ Top CDs, but Eliminator is my favorite by far, I would give it 6 stars if I could.
DROSS FOR THE MTV GENERATION!.......2006-06-29
Yes this is ZZ Top and no it's not a bit like 'tres hombre' or 'rio grande' this is where the lil band from Texas sold out big time. Sure the girls are great in the video's but so what? the songs stink 'legs' being the absolute pits of that trilogy with its irritating drum beat sounding like a machine with no emotion. Even Billy Gibbons ferocious soloing is toned down. Sure this album made big bucks but so what? it sucks from beginning to end, no wonder teens brought it in droves it hardly would appeal to lovers of 'la grange' If you're looking for high octane boogie forget it, if you're looking for something that people who don't really like rock, but feel they have to have something slightly rocky, be my guest. A stinker.

ONE OF THE BEST SURF BANDS PERFORMING.......2006-04-11
These guys are one of the best surf bands presently performing. I have seen them play in person several times. Their sound is amazing. I have the CD & love it. Make the effort to see these guys play in person.
The Real Deal Surf Music!.......1999-06-19
These guys have the sound, the attitude, and some great new surf songs. It's like travelling back to '63 and finding a surf band with musicians who'd actually been playing their instruments for more than a couple of weeks! These guys are really good. If you like surf music, or if you even think you like it, you will love this album. And if you play surf guitar (like me), there are lots of great hooks and new riffs here to borrow! Long live The Eliminators!
This band is reason enough to turn on to surf!.......1999-05-30
High-energy, creative, authentic, home-grown, real, non-commercial (I hope not, but I remember how much more I enjoyed the X Files before everybody else knew about it). This is a great CD. Buy it now. Buy copies for all of your fellow "surf dudes/ettes". Real California feel-good on a disc. You cannot be depressed and listen to this at the same time. I tried. I couldn't do it! I also love to play along on my aquamarine strat. Have had a great time and never get bored listening to it again. Hope they keep on performing and making more CDs.
Incredibly performed genuine surf for the 90's and beyond!.......1999-03-03
I first heard LA's Eliminators on Tri-Surf Records' Planet Surf CD. Since then, I've played "Bone Cruncher" umpteen times on Surf's Up! A few months back I saw them in Santa Cruz, and I was completely blown away! They were very powerful, authentic as hell, played gorgeous vintage equipment (drool), and had a delivery like none since the Original Surfaris! Joe Kurkowski plays a killer lead, Preston Wilson plays a great rhythm guitar, Frank Hughes plays a solid surf bass, Doug Harlow plays his brand new drums, and Billy Swanson is the best vintage surf sax player I've heard in years, and I usually don't like horns at all, save for Steve Douglas' classic surf squonks on songs like "Banzai Washout." They understand the genre like guys who were there in '62, and they play like guys who are in a major hurry to pummel their audience. Incredibly powerful, masterfully performed genuine surf for the 90's and beyond! There is no more perfect an example of a vintage surf band recorded in the 90's!

Must Have Surf CD.......2006-09-12
This is a must have CD. See these guy in person. They are still together & doing shows.
All 14 surf instros are winners........1999-03-03
Ultra Sonic marks a significant departure for the Eliminators. It also retains their signature sound. Adding sophistication, country, and excellent arranging to their crunchy sound, and reducing the reverb on the rhythm guitar, all add up to excellent listening. It's good to hear new material from this rarest of bands, real longboarders playing real surf music. All 14 surf instros are winners.
PARAFIN JUNGLE*** This is an excursion into sonic territory that the Eliminators have not previously ventured, the land of Memphis flavored instros, where gig flowing notes and effected country twang rule. It's melodic and prancing, with an excellent sax break from Billy Swanson.
E-FIVE**** Big twang reverb, ringing chords, and a shimmering sounds await as Joe Kurkowski's guitar floats on a sea of shallow vibrato. The break is a mean double picked low-E grind followed by a great and gentle vibrato riff. "E-Five" is big and very satisfying.
CROSS STEPPIN'**** Damped rhythms and moody bass under flowing lead chords give way to a great riff, and then the backtrack transitions into a cool solid beat with ska rhythm guitar. This is an infectious and haunting track, with power and excellent arranging.
DR. JELLY FINGER**** An effect electronic whirring keyboard excursion over solid damped rhythm guitar and a sorta B-52's progression, and quirky surf lead guitar. Quite an unusual track. The page of "Dr. Jelly Finger" followed by the evil laugh identifies "Dr. Jelly Finger" as a proctologist who enjoys his work and your discomfort. Pretty darn cool.
THE BREEZE & I**** Ernesto Lacuoña's classic melody is beautifully played out. This is just about as good as it gets, just shy of the exquisite Vibrants' version. The shimmering tone and delicate playing are perfect for the melody. The flute verse gives in an exotic air.

Album Description
Australian coupling of the group's 1985 album Afterburnner with Fandango (1975) and Eliminator (1983). Since its formation in 1969, ZZ TOP has been recognized as a group with world-class status and as the most iconic American band of all time and, to many around the world, a living symbol of Texas music. Consistency is a hallmark of ZZ TOP with the Gibbons-Hill-Beard troika unchanged since the band's founding almost 35 years ago still going strong today. ZZ TOP have carved a sizeable niche for themselves in popular American culture with their hell-raisin' blues rock and instantly recognizable chest-length beards. Their droll sense of absurdist humour has added to the band's cache over the years. Drawing from R&B, blues, country, boogie, and even hip-hop, the trio has forged a style and sound as big and as badass as their home state. Beyond the successes of their albums, singles and tours, they have been named Official Heroes of The State of Texas and have been the subject of numerous references in films, TV, cartoons, political campaigns and the popular vernacular in general. Rhino. 2006.
