Frijid Pink - self-titled (Repertoire).......2006-09-24
Originally released in 1970,as this was the Detroit hard rock/psych band's first album on CD reissue. You know,I just wanted to mention that I've heard this band's name mentioned before, but before like two weeks before this review was written,I've never heard any of their music. Guess what I'm trying to say is that the Internet is a truly an unlimited source of music information. Hooray! Tunes I liked best were "Crying Shame","I'm On My Way","House Of The Rising Sun" (apparently what they're better known for),"Boozin' Blues" and their Elvis cover "Heartbreak Hotel".Line-up:Kelly Green-vocals,Gary Thompson-guitar,Tom Harris-bass and Rich Stevens-drums. Fans of the Stooges,Dead Boys,Amboy Dukes and MC5 should get a lot out of this disc. Recommended.
Play it Loud!.......2005-05-16
Frijid pink left off where MC5 did, Loud!Unfortunately the original lineup didn't stay for long. By the third album there was only one member left from first album. I'm not saying this was the greatest band, but certainly if you're into early heavy rock it's a keeper.
4.5 stars - an excellent, severely underrated album.......2004-11-22
Frijid Pink (1970.) Frijid Pink's first album.
In the sixties, Detroit was filled with young up and coming rock and roll acts that were trying to make it big. Many of these bands, like the MC5, Detroit Wheels, and the Stooges succeeded, but many a rock band from the same location and era never got the proper recognition. Among those forgotten rock acts of the day was Frijid Pink. The group, initially composed of five high school friends, gigged almost endlessly for two years, and once they finally got a recording contract, their career came crashing down much faster than it had risen. By the time the group started releasing albums, their career was pretty much over. Read on for my review of the group's first album.
The first Frijid Pink album is the best one, because it's the one that captures the group in their prime. Many rock and roll fans wrote the group off as a one-hit wonder due to their cover of the traditional tune, House Of The Rising Sun. True, that song was a big hit, and it's the best version of the song ever recorded by any band, but there is so much more to Frijid Pink than that song. The average fan of rock and roll, more likely than not, has never even heard of the band, which is a real shame. These guys were every bit as talented, if not more talented, than many of their peers of the day. After listening to this album from start to finish, I can honestly say that, while not perfect, there isn't a track on here I don't like. Any fan of sixties-style psychedelic rock would be doing themselves a real favor picking this album up.
Unfortunately, while a good album, this one has long since been out of print. On the good side though, in Germany, where the band's cover of House Of The Rising Sun topped the charts, the album has been reissued - with two bonus tracks, no less. Amazon sells that German version of the album, and if you're going to get the album, there's really no better version to get.
There's no denying that when Frijid Pink was in their prime, they were an excellent rock and roll group. Too bad they weren't in their prime for very long. Their later releases had little to no chart success, and there were tons of band member changes. The group fell apart not too far into the seventies. If you only get one of the band's albums, make it their debut. No other release of theirs tops it.
One of the Great Forgotten Guilty Pleasures of 1969.......2004-06-09
From the name of the band and the slightly tacky cover, here was one of the guilty pleasures of 1969. And it only began with their psychedelic self-parody meeting heavy metal meathead mash version of "The House of the Rising Sun." Imagine the guys down the block who weren't clever enough to hang baffling in the garage and thought they could find a way to be Cream and what was left of the Yardbirds at the same time, and that was Frijid Pink in a nutshell.
As such, their first album (the only Frijid Pink album worth having of the three they managed to cut) was something you probably didn't confess having to too many people, but something about "The House of the Rising Sun" made you want just a little bit more. So did something about "Drivin' Blues," the flip side of the single, with a sound living up to their title, and it is maybe the smartest ever rip-off of Albert King's "Oh Pretty Woman" - they take King's theme riff, throw in a stop-time verse to break up the monotony, and crank the whole thing in sixth gear with some savoury harmonica punctuation for good enough measure.
What you got on the album was just about what you got on that single: a quintessential garage band whose aim was somewhere lost between the psychedelic and the blues. Not a bad place to be lost, when all was said and done. Except that they were damn fool enough to put out a God-awful version of "Heartbreak Hotel" as their next single and it, like the album which yielded it ("Defrosted"), disappeared faster than Jimmy Hoffa would in a couple of years. A shame, too. Their one good album is still a guilty pleasure. Add a star for chutzpah.

Frijid Pink - 'Defrosted' (Repertoire).......2006-11-12
Originally released in 1970, as this was the band's follow-up to their self-titled album (see my review). Some say Frijid Pink SHOULD have been a huge success. Tracks here that I dug the most were "Black Lace", the common-sounding "Sing A Song For Freedom" (you'll SWEAR you've heard another band perform this song, but it's certainly not a cover), the lengthy eight-minute "Pain In My Heart" and "I Haven't Got The Time". Thought 'Defrosted' was more in the hard rock vein, and maybe less psych than the first lp. This CD reissue has four(4) bonus cuts tagged on, that didn't do much for me. They've just got too much of a definite soul 'vibe' to it. Still, the original album is somewhat of a keeper.
Very Pleasantly Surprised!!.......2006-08-16
I bought this cd just because I enjoyed their first one so much. This one is probably better than the first, to my surprise. I can't believe this band wasn't huge, the should have been. If you love classic rock with some blues thrown in, you'll love this cd and their first one as well.
Turn on the defroster ..........2002-09-14
With this puppy available on CD, I won't have to scour downtown Denver anymore, looking for used eight-track players. This band deserved more success than it received but failed to "brand" itself. (Forgive the marketing terminology. What can I say -- I sold out YEARS ago.) Ironically, the popularity of Frigid Pink's first hit, House of the Rising Sun, was probably the first step toward the band's undoing. It established the Pinksters as a cover band without their own identity. The best cut on this, their follow-up album, is Pain in My Heart, which seems to be incorrectly listed as Pain in My Head. Wonderful, straight-up rock with few surprises.
Psychadelic Blues heavy fusion.......2001-09-22
I can only say what heart tells me. I have this record since 1972 and even today I listen to it with emotion. "Bye Bye Blues", "I'll never be lonely" are simply marvelous. The guitar solos are unique, the drums are stunning, voice was never repeated and bass is good. I wonder why so few people bought this LP back them. All the music is unique! It's all.
sorely underappreciated Motor City rock.......2000-04-25
"Defrosted" picks up where Frijid Pink's eponymous debut album left off. That is, it rocks from start to finish. The band, led by lead guitarist Gary Ray Thompson cranks out blues-based rock and roll Motor City style for 50 solid minutes. The folks at Repertoire have added 4 bonus tracks to the 8 included on the original release, adding more than 10 minutes of bonus listening pleasure. The album contains the single "Sing A Song For Freedom" which reached #55 on the charts, a disappointing followup (chart wise) to "House of the Rising Sun" from their debut album which reached #7 in the summer of 1970, just months prior to the original release of "Defrosted." Driven by Gary Ray Thompson's heavy riffing and mind bending solos and Kelly Green's vocals (reminiscent of Blue Cheer's Dickie Peterson) the band sizzles on "Bye Bye Blues" and "Pain In My Heart" among others. Unfortunately, "Defrosted" reached only #149 on the album charts, paling in comparison to the debut album's #11 placing, and following "Defrosted" all the members of Frijid Pink left the band save drummer Rich Stevers, who then formed a new FJ and released two further, quite inferior albums, "Earth Omen" and "All Pink Inside." Thompson's guitar work alone makes this album a worthy addition to a cd collection. For those who enjoyed the debut album this is a must, and for fans of heavy rock, Detroit style, likewise. Its a cryan' shame that the record buying public abandoned the Pink after their first album. No doubt Gary Ray Thompson had plenty of tasty solos left in him. Don't know what ever happened to him, but I do no that 30 years ago, and again today his guitar work brings joy to my heart.

Customer Reviews:
//Detroit slashers\\.......2006-06-15
I was going to title this 'Detroit Swelterweights', but since liner note author Chris Welch describes the music of Frijid Pink as "slashing Detroit rock", I thought '//Detroit slashers\\' would be more apropo, especially since most people think of Detroit as the most dangerous city East OR West of Shanghai anyway. But that wasn't the Detroit that I was growing up in in 1970, when the cool Pinks released their first and best sheet of vinyl. I had a buddy who was fond of that vinyl LP, and while he took some razzing for it, I didn't complain too much when he took it out for a spin. In fact, I liked it enough to wait for a slightly discounted example of this newly remastered version with additional bonus tracks to hit the 'for sale' rack, and finally picked one up after plenty of waiting.
Frijid Pink may be unknown to many of you, although they did score one monster hit in 1970 with their cover of The Animals 'House of the Rising Sun'. If you were living in the Detroit environs, however, you knew about the Pinks every bit as much as you knew about The Amboy Dukes, The Bob Seger System, and perhaps even The Stooges. You see Detroit was a hotbed for cutting edge rock circa 1970, just as the White Stripes and Eminem continue to put the city on the musical map today. And although this album could hardly be considered a classic, there's plenty of good, hard psychedelic rock to be had from both sides of the platter. And the band penned much of their own material. Lead guitarist Gary Thompson and bass guitarist Thomas Beaudry teamed up on 10 of the 14 tracks, while producer Mike Valvano penned 'Crying Shame'.
For the most part, Frijid Pink shred paint from the walls with enormous quantities (as the Coneheads would say...) of decibels. While the band tried releasing a number of songs as singles, it's hard to imagine why the opening track, 'God Gave Me You', didn't crack the Top 40. Sure the lyrics from this band never rise above mediocre ("God gave me love, God gave me you girl..."), but this hard rock ballad with the funky wah-pedal psychedelic guitar in the background simply cooks. They follow that up with another sweet number, 'Crying Shame', best described as a psychedelic blues-rock track featuring a very heavy & fuzzy lead guitar riff. The third track takes a diversion into 1950-ish boogie rock, and throws a fine slide guitar in along with kudo's in the lyrics to another Detroit blues instituion, Savoy Brown. 'Drivin' Blues', a J. Geils Band-style up-tempo blues romp, and 'Tell Me Why', an excursion into heavy metal chaos with a fuzzy lead guitar lending skeletal structure, close out side one of the original vinyl.
Side two of Pinks debut LP features the fast-tempo blast 'End of the Line' as the opener. The mono single version of this track is the closer on the bonus tracks, but go figure why anyone would want to hear the abridged mono version. Ditto for the single version of 'House of the Rising Sun' sans the toned down bridge, perhaps the most appealing element of that track. Speaking of 'House...', it's buried as the second track on side two... as though the boys had no idea this was hit material! It's one of the great rock covers, updating The Animals version with a bold foundation, a psychedelic wah-pedal in the background, and a faster tempo. Worth listening to just to pick up some energy! The last two songs on the original vinyl are also the longest tracks, each running just over six minutes, and they are a curious mix. 'I Want To Be Your Lover' is an anti-drug/alcohol/materialism/protest rant with a nice wah-pedal bridge and a throwaway minute-long drum solo. Ironically, that's followed by 'Boozin' Blues' a live slow blues track burying itself and frontman Kelly Green in its sorrow.
The remaining three bonus tracks are all curiosities. The Pinks don't cover Elvis as well as they covered Eric Burdon, however. 'Heartbreak Hotel' is a good rocker, but the decibels completely obliterate whatever melody Elvis' version possessed. 'Music For the People' diverges radically from the Frijid Pink formula, building itself around an acoustic guitar, organ, tambourine, and Motown-like background vocals. The lyrics carry a Coca-Cola 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing' message ("Thank God for music, He gives it to us all for free..."), but it has a decent sound to it, and somehow manages to fit in with all the heavy metal. And 'Sing a Song For Freedom' is an anthemic number with a tribal drumbeat. Both songs show the band possessed diversity beyond what the original vinyl touted.
This digipak comes nicely illustrated. Of course the name of the band and the day-glo pink foundation are just too cool... but we're also treated to detailed information on the band, numerous photographs from the era, and lovingly composed liner notes from the aforementioned Chris Welch. If you're a fan of heavy rock music from the late 1960's and early 1970's, and you never heard this disc, you really should give it a run for the money. I think you'll discover a moment in rock history that is sorely overlooked.

Frijid Pink - 'Earth Omen' (Repertoire).......2006-12-30
Originally released in 1973, this was the band's third lp and nearly as good as their previous two, their self-titled debut and 'Defrosted' (see my reviews of both). I've heard a few others say this record number three is boring, but I disagree with that. Still good psychedelia. Most notable tracks are the full-speed-ahead rocker "Sailor",title cut "Earth Omen","Lazy Day"(good guitar work)and "Rainbow Rider". Comes with two added bonus tracks. Alright!
Typical 70's cd........2005-05-16
Not horrible, but nothing like there first album. Almost completely different lineup. If you like a band such as sugarloaf you may like this one. Very similiar.
The Facts.......2002-08-08
This work was recorded at Eastern Sound in Toronto under the worst of creative conditions, produced by Vinnie Testa who's only claim to fame was supposedly being aquainted with Shadow Morton who produced the Fudge. The album was released on MGM Lion and followed the release of the single Lost Son which was a London Parrot single. Now the facts:Earth Omen,New Horizon and Lost Son were in truth composed as a trilogy by Jon Wearing who had been working with another Michigan artist and associate Dick Wagner after the demise of the Frost.Wagner went on to form Ursa Major and Wearing who had been working in the Detroit music scene since 1966 with the Tidalwaves and had a hit Farmer John signed with Pink with the agreement for the first work 20% of his writing would be distributed equally among the other members of the band who were totally lost and down and out. Testa and Wearing could never see eye to eye, the management had no idea what they were doing, IRS and legal issues and the entire project was a wash and Wearing left to form a very good R&B influenced rock band called Deluxe. Deluxe toured with Joe Walsh, James Cotton, Atlanta Rhythm Section, opened for Seger and many others.Dallas Hodge,Ray Craig,KimballLee,Greg Caulder and Wearing comprised the band that had been targeted by Epic to sign. Leo Fenn part of the Alice Cooper business organization and Wearing pal was the manager until heads got out of control in part do to Johnny Winter's medling and then John Sinclair became the manager and demise of this fine act. Hodge continues to work with Canned Heat overseas and Wearing still provides moments with the Detroit based Ghostband.Wearing attempted to provide some quality to Pink however was stiffled by the mis-management of Clyde Stevers and Marv Wilson. Enough for now, The Truth.
My favorite Frijid Pink recording.......2001-07-21
I am a big fan of this group and this is my favorite recording of theirs. Actually 2 original members were on this recording, Rick Stevers and Tom Harris, who was never credited on the first two albums. The title song "Earth Omen" was a timely song about pollution concerns and respect for the planet. "Lazy Day" is a wonderful song about being home with the folks you love. "Sailor" is also a great tune. It is a shame this album wasn't more commercially successful at the time it was released. The musicans on this CD were obviously very talented. It may be a bit of a departure for those we are big fans of the "Frijid Pink" and "Defrosted" albums, but it is surely a worthwhile effort.
These are the seventies ... pure!.......1999-02-24
Although not recorded by the original line up (only drummer Stevers remained on this one) it's a typical 70's record, with all there has to be. I especially like "Lazy Day" and "Mr. Blood" although the latter has a rather sudden end. I assume the lyrics are quite pretentious, but who cares as long as the music rocks! Cool stuff worth checking out!

Not Bad, But The Older Albums Are Better..........2002-05-04
Unfortunately by this time, Frijid Pink were already past their prime and the point of no return when this album was released, and it turned out to be their swan song. Drummer Rich Stevers is the only original member left, and new vocalist Jo Baker is great, but not nearly as great as Kelly Green was. The best songs on this CD are "Money Man", "Gonna Get It Yet", and the humorous "There Ain't No Rock And Roll In China". Overall, not a bad effort, but I'll take their excellent debut album over this anytime.
great blues/rock.......2001-07-10
I was surprised at how good this record was. "Gonna Get it Yet" was my favorite song but actually the more I listened to the CD the more the rest of the songs grew on me. "Money Man" is a catchy tune and the cover of Chuck Berry's "School Day" rocks. Jo Baker's vocals are great and Craig Webb smokes on guitar.

DONT BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!.......2005-04-12
If you want an excellent testimony to a great band....buy the first 2 remastered cd's .....they have the same bonus tracks and you'd be happier....the 3rd cd "Earth Omen"....is a total waste.....the drummer reforms the band....more accurately....he continues to use the name with an entirely new lineup.....this is NOT the Fridgid Pink you will remember....the effort is totally lame and has no business being compared to the original band in any way, shape or form.
Do yourself a BIG favor.....DONT BUY THIS BOX SET....you'll be disappointed......and I doubt this box set was remastered.....another reason to avoid it
NOT WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY UNLESS YOU'RE A FP FANATIC.......2004-12-25
The canned description above doesn't really detail this package very well. Also, the user review above this one is not correct with regard to the mastering.
The three albums come in "LP-mini-sleeve" replicas that have been made popular, primarily by Japanese companies. The three CD's are packaged with a two page essay enclosed. This set is produced by an Italian firm, Arkarma Records.
As to the audio quality, there are no remastering credits in the set. I e-mailed Arkarma, and received a reply that the set was remastered.
However, upon an A/B comparison to the 1991 Repertoire "Frijid Pink" CD, I could not hear any audio differentiation. Therefore, if you are just looking for the "House Of The Rising Sun", this set is an expensive way to go: The stand-alone Repertoire CD is still available, along with the same two bonus tracks that appear on this version.
I suspect the Italian label just licensed the Repertoire masters, and then upped the packaging.
As to the music, most of the reviews you read about this band stress Gary Ray Thompson's guitar playing. While his is the driving voice of the band, they had a great rhythm section, and lead singer Kelly Green could belt it out with the best from that era.
That line-up is only present for two of the three albums in this set. The members went their separate ways after the 2nd album, "Defrosted", only to be reconstituted in 1972 by drummer Rich Stevers as a quintet with four new members.
Unfortunately, the resulting album, "Earth Omen" (also included in this set) is not on a par with the previous two albums. Even the enclosed booklet inside this set refers to it as "quite inferior".
One wonders, then, why Arkama chose to include it in this package, which obviously increased the set's price by a third.
As for Frijid Pink, I would say that if you are a fan of other blues/rock bands from the early 70's, such as Free, you would enjoy them.
As for this set, however, I purchased it expecting an upgrade to the audio quality from the 1991 Repertoire disc, but that is not the case.
My advice is to buy the 1991 "Frijid Pink" and 1997 remastered "Defrosted" (which also has the same four bonus tracks as here) stand-alone Repertoire CD's, unless you just have to have the mini-album sleeve reproductions.
Arkama's parent label has been producing these MS-CD's for all their titles, and the paper stock they use is nicer and has a more tactile finish than what the Japanese use for their versions.
2006 update to this review: Repertoire has issued new "remastered" versions of the first two FP titles. I have compared them to the older Repertoire releases, and there is a SLIGHT improvement over those versions.
