While Aerosmith were busy capitalizing on the successes spawned by its improbable, career-reviving Permanent Vacation and Pump albums, the rock world was undergoing a Nirvana-inspired seismic shift. And although the Boston boogie-rockers had long worn the "dinosaur" tag as a badge of honor, this 1993 album is evidence that they took the twin challenges posed by the upsurge of alternative and hip-hop as something more than mere inconvenience. Unfortunately, the sometimes painfully forced, something-for-everyone results only argued that musicians should stick to their guns, come hell, high water--or ominous fashion trends. Or maybe they should have heeded the old adage about too many cooks. Indeed, Aerosmith is supplemented--and sometimes seemingly supplanted--here by no less than six outside writers (including previous vets Desmond Child and Jim Vallance, as well as Hudson brother Mark and retro soul-rocker Lenny Kravitz), and the schizoid production of Vacation and Pump helmsman Bruce Fairbairn, who seems as comfortable with alt rock's less-is-more ethos as Stone Cold Steve Austin would be in a tutu. The band should've known better, too. The social consciousness of "Livin' on the Edge" seems contrived, with Steven Tyler's intermittent rapping utterly disconnected from that on his pioneering "Walk This Way," while "Eat the Rich" inexplicably promotes auto-cannibalism. Rockin' It Soft.......2007-06-10

There's some really good music on this album, though it's not nearly as hard rocking as fans of the older Aerosmith would expect (or perhaps want). The three singles "Amazing," "Cryin'," and "Crazy" in particular seem like commercialized pop-rock. That isn't to say that I don't like them. As much as I generally hate rock that sounds like it was especially made for radio/MTV, those three songs are just too good to dislike. Then there are the other songs like "Livin' On the Edge" and "Eat the Rich," which also got some attention and aren't too bad. Overall, while it's not nearly as rocking as the classic Aerosmith stuff, it's perhaps just as good.

Three in a row for the Bad Boys from Boston!.......2007-03-23

This is the third in an incredibly tasty trio of albums from the Bad Boys from Boston ("Permanent Vacation", "Pump", and "Get a Grip"). Many (most?) fans from the early days don't appreciate these releases from the band's days with Geffen Records, but I'm just as blown away by them as "Get Your Wings", "Toys in the Attic" and "Rocks" from their Columbia Records era.
Again, many current concert staples, like "Eat the Rich", "Livin' on the Edge", and "Cryin'". But, also, some other great rockers like the title cut, "Fever", "Flesh", "Shut Up and Dance", "Crazy", "Line Up" and "Amazing". This was Aerosmith at their MTV best. Now approaching 40 years together, and truly better than ever in concert. Rock on dudes!

those familiar to my reviews know that I don't hand out a 5 star review very easily and yet here is one and the follow up to this 'nine lives' also gets a 5 star review...it's really that good

Aerosmith needs to be given a lot of credit,in a world dominated by humongous egos,they realized that they needed some help in the songwriting department...those that sing the praises of old era aerosmith seem to forget that alongside of amazing anthems like 'walk this way' and 'sweet emotion' and 'dream on' they also penned the songs on 'rock in a hard place' and 'night in the ruts' and 'draw the line'
nobody can hit a home run every time and they were able to push their ego to the side (after the commercial bomb that was called 'done with mirrors') to realize that having outside songwriters would allow them to do what they do best and that is rock and roll like there's no tomorrow...the music is catchy from the first song to the last on this great CD and Steven has a chance to write some extremely cleaver lyrics...
to those that wish to dismiss this release because of the trio of ballads I challenge you to find any band that could release so many beautiful ballads and STILL hold street credibility,which Aerosmith has done for a long,long time
this CD and the follow up is a true work of art from a songwriting standpoint and the musicianship never suffers
this band is still as tight as ever and Steven's vocals are spot on perfect

the CD starts with a very weird intro and goes into Eat The Rich...okay the lyrics are intentionally tongue in cheek,it's meant to be taken as funny (come on people,grow a sense of humor) put aside the comical lyrics about eating wealthy people and you are left with one heck of a catchy rock song,perfect way to open this album...from there it goes to the title track 'get a grip' more hooks that'll stick with you and more cleaver lyrics...I won't go through each and every song but what I will say is this,the lyrical topics are varied,the songs are very catchy (both rockers and ballads alike) the production is perfect (Bruce Fairbairn had producing great commercial rock albums down to a science..simply put in 3 words 'slippery when wet')
of course the highlight of the album is the 3 monster hits (which all featured Alicia Silverstone in the videos which would HAVE to score points to any man with a heartbeat)'cryin', 'crazy' and 'amazing'
all are absolutely beautiful and in 20 years I believe will be classics nearly on level with 'dream on' ...those that want to bust on Aerosmith for "selling out" by writing ballads obviously are forgetting "Dream On","Cry Me A River","You See Me Crying" and others from their past...
every song on this CD is great and each has a different emotion and is worthy

the upside - great songs throughout,top notch performances,and a great polished production...this is rock and roll...commercial and yet with an attitude

the downside - some of the songs were overplayed (certainly not Aerosmith's fault for doing songs that good that people wanted to hear 'em over and over

the bottom line - If you are a fan of good melodic music,with some cleaver lyrics worth really listening carefully to,this is definitely one to have...it also includes one of my favorite quotes,at the end of 'Amazing' they say 'the light at the end of the tunnel may be you' think about it,it inspires me,simple yet brilliant...Get A Grip is a must fan for all rock fans everywhere,run out and buy it now,donutman says so!!!

Another Strong One.......2007-01-25

Another decent one from the boys. The album opens with a rap from Steven Tyler followed by several samples from this and previous albums then kicks straight into "Eat The Rich". It is a great opening sequence and sets the tone for the rest of the album. After that though things get a bit more average. The rest of the album is pretty much by numbers Aerosmith which is not necessarily a bad thing, but there is not a lot to distinguish this album from many of their other works. There are several huge hits represented here including "Fever", and three big ballads "Crying", "Amazing", and "Crazy" none of which rank up with their best ballads IMO. Overall this is a pretty typical Aerosmith album, but for the most part I like it.

HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN........2006-12-03

Aerosmith weren't they a rock band once? gritty, down to earth writing killer tunes like 'toys in the attic' 'seasons of wither' and now this drivel. There last chance with me. If you thought 'permenant vacation' was bad ('pump' had its moments) this is even worse. It includes 'crazy' another of Tyler's dreary ballads and so bland that Bon Jovi would kill for it, as for the rest it is down the line stadium rock, no passion,none of that Aerosmith intensity that made 'rocks' so great,dumb music for the dumb MTV generation. Lost my custom boys!

The 1993 Release from the Veteran Boston Rockers was their Fourth for the Geffen Records Label and Added Several Singles to their Second String of Hits that Began with 1987's "Permanent Vacation". Thanks to a Saavy Casting Director, the Trifecta of Promotional Videos for the Songs "Cryin'", "Amazing" and "Crazy" Featured the Video Debut of Alicia Silverstone, who Captured Many a Young Man's Fancy with her Portrayal of a Rebellious Chick. In Addition, the Videos for "Livin' on the Edge", "Eat the Rich" were Groundbreaking. This Edition Includes the Bonus Track, "Can't Stop Messin'", which Does Not Appear on the Us Equivalent.

This was/is lacking alot.......2006-08-13

I was disappointed with this. I was kind of hoping that they would get down to business, and do a real 70's retro sounding album. I was put off by the slick produced "Pump" album from 1989, and wanted to hear something on the lines of thier first album, or "Get Your Wings", but here the songs were too weak, and most of them had way way too much harmonica on here. Songs like "Fever", "Eat The Rich", "Cryin", and "Crazy" are just as bad as if the group ran thier nails down a blackboard. "Amazing" was a annoying ballad, and with that, and "Crazy", and "Cryin" having Alicia Silverstone in them made me jealous as I'm like: "Why is it always the rich ones?" There was only one real good song on here, and that was the last one which was "Boogey Man". I did go onto find out that this was during the time that the group was having a falling out with Geffen Records, and was tired of the record president causing trouble with the contract. This is why I'm giving this 2 stars otherwise it would've been less.

Have always been an Aerosmith fan,even on their lp's that didn't do all that well.I can honestly say that 'Get A Grip' is a darn good later day effort by them Boston bad boys.I've heard a few mention how this CD just MAY be the band's best record since their 'Rocks' lp.Now,that's saying something.'Get A Grip' is in my opinion anyway,a modern hard rock classic.Rips from beginning to end.Killer tracks include "Eat The Rich","Shut Up And Dance","Fever","Line-Up","Livin' On The Edge"(remember the video?),"Cryin'" and "Walk On Down"(which features guitarist Joe Perry on vocals).Sweet!No doubt.A must have for all fans.Highly recommended.

Get A Grip, Indeed.......2005-02-24

I bought this the day it came out, listened to it all the way through three times, and tossed it out the window of my apartment in Boston. The only songs I can stomach are "Livin' On The Edge" and one other one towards the end that I can't remember the name of...something about dancing.
Anyway, for all of the bashing that I hear about Rock..Hard Place and Done w/ Mirrors, this album is absolute crap.
Why they became so huge again in the late 80's is a complete mystery to me. Glossy production, horrible lyrics, unimaginative grooves and those horrible, HORRIBLE power ballads are NOT what made Aerosmith a classis band - Go buy Toys In The Attic or Rocks NOW...and toss this garbage in the trash where it belongs.

Aerosmith keeps rocking but not as good.......2004-08-10

This is not Aerosmith's best album. This is not Aerosmith's worst album either however. And when your worst album can have hit singles, an album that's in the middle can't be that bad.

Featured on this album is Livin' On The Edge, one of the best songs Tyler/Perry ever wrote. The biggest fault of this album is that the quality of songs seem way lower than Livin' On The Edge. If most of the songs were of the same quality, this would've been an amazing album, but as it stands only Cryin' comes close.

This guy has tasty chops and great guitar tone, writes good songs, sings well and has a good feel for the blues, and still he's practically unknown! Fans of Robben Ford should love him. Too bad, he deserves better. Spread the word!

Motown's First Female Rapper.......2003-11-06

MC Trouble will either be remembered as Motown's first female rapper, or as the female rapper that tragically died during an epileptic seizure in 1991. Her story is one of the most heartbreaking in the history of rap. Born LaTasha Sheron Rogers, she struck the charts very soon after her signing with Motown, with "(I Wanna) Make You Mine" which became a hit in 1990. Although not in a class with Queen Latifah or MC Lyte, she seemed headed for a promising career. Motown records seemed to have been strong supporters for MC Trouble; a record label that was extremely weak in the genre of rap, and focused on her to change all that. With producers Full Force (among many others) behind the mixing board, her lone full-length, Gotta Get a Grip, did farely well on the charts. Whether it's commercial, R&B-ish material or hardcore rap the aggressive MC shows she has solid rhyming skills. Her passing made a huge impact on the hip-hop scene, and she earned many shoutouts from A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, respected Compton rapper Toddy Tee, and Nefertiti ("Trouble in Paradise" was dedicated to her).

A Little Too Close To Another Band For Me.......2002-10-21

I am from the Mid-West, and there is a band here that has the same exact sound and most of the same lyrics to their songs, they are called the "Persistant Ducks" the name of their CD was "Addicted To Quack" I personally know that the Ducks have been around since 1996 and have been singing te songs since them. They just sound really close to me and I can smell a copycat, even with that it is a really good sound and great songs, they just cannot capture the energy of the Ducks.

Pleasantly surprised.......2000-01-05

Writing this off as just another pseudo-pop-punk piece of 90's alt-rock bandwagoning would be a big mistake. It's a shame that these guys get no press because what they do with a pop song is nothing short of impressive. Sweet enough for the "alternative" crowd, bouncy and energetic enough for the pop-punk crowd, yet with an honest feeling that few mainstream bands can actually pull off. Every once in a while, some alt-radio cliches pop up, but most of this album is terrific. It's singable in a way that doesn't make you feel guilty about being suckered by the major labels that crank out a lotta glossy shyte. Too infectious to pass up.
