Big on highs and understandable lows .......2007-07-13
Probably deserves 3 and a half stars but that isn't an option.
I won't try and turn anyone off this release because the "good" stuff is hot! I personally prefer full shows and am ready to accept that not everything works on every show but that doesn't justify an automatic 5 stars for every release based on the "good" stuff.
Is it one of the better GD live releases?? Not entirely - read on. The sound may be crisp and clear but some of the performances are a hard listen - PITB shocked me in this embryonic and sloppy version however, it's understandable that new songs have to be road-tested.
Yes, i know that they played a heap of new, still undeveloped songs that would turn into monsters in years to come - It's amazing that some of those very tracks like PITB, GSET and Deal ended up as grand as they did because listening to these versions you'd have thought they'd be dumped for eternity by the end of the month. Thanks to GD for NOT doing that.
There are heaps of positives to be drawn from this release - i don't beleive i've heard a better Smokestack, Hurts Me Too or Easy Wind. Cumberland Blues is always a "fun" track even if lines are forgotten. Did the band have an energy drink (or maybe something different??) before playing Bertha - sounds like it - gets you moving. Continuing on with that energy is China/Rider - a stand-out sounding more confident with age (and will get better after '71). Other One is my favourite GD song (along with UJB & EOTW) and hardly ever disappoints - this version is no exception. Wharf Rat rides on the crest of raw emotion, flows, and ultimately drags you in. Truckin' and Loser also deserve worthy mentions.
A single cd version for the average listener would be 5 stars and i've made a compilation of the highlights just right for the car (apologies for leaving out johnny b. goode which is one of the best i've heard but it didn't fit on the cd-r). This is it:
1. cumberland blues
2. hurts me too
3. bertha
4. smokestack lightnin'
5. china cat sunflower
6. i know you rider
7. easy wind
8. that's it for the other one
9. wharf rat
Was it worth the purchase - ohhhhhhhh yeahhhhhh!! They can keep releasing mixed-bags of goodies like this and i'll keep buying them and asking for more! Yummy!!
Classic Dead with Pigpen........2007-07-12
Killer show, this is the best Grateful Dead to come out of the vault in a while. Very sweet Smokestack Lighting. This is a must for all Deadheads.

Bring Out Your Dead.......2007-07-06
Bring out your Dead! Bring out your Dead! Well whaddya' know - finally, From the Vault III was released. I'm usually biased to these folks since I have always been a "grateful fan" and with all that time waiting for it - I find it somewhat of a letdown, The best part was "That's it for the Other One" - and other than that, it was not what I was hoping to expect. However, I have to give much credit to Bill K - his drumming did more than make up for the loss of Mickey H during those days.
Mediocracy reigns for this one - can't win them all!
The Pig Pen Blues tracks sound great on this.......2007-06-28
I usually not a big Pg Pen fan but I have to say It Hurts Me Too, Smokestack Lightning and Easy Wind are fantastic. Maybe the best version of Easy Wind I have ever heard. There is also a great version of the Other One as well. Several songs had their debut on this tour. Some sound better than others but if you are interested in hearing the origins of these tunes its worth a listen. The sound and remix on this is incredible. While not a lot of jamming (a five minute version of Playing In The Band????) its nice to hear a stripped down bluesy Dead.
I'm Thinking of a Number Between One and Ten!.......2007-06-27
It's been awhile since the GD folks have had a new release of archival materials from their legendary tape vault (since moved?). Apparently this baby has been ready to go in the "...From the Vault" (multi-track recording) series for the last 15 years. Ahh, procrastination at it's best! But as R.Hunter once wrote, "all good things in all good time". Well, lets amend that. How about "all GREAT things in all good time"! Because, thats the feeling I got, when listening to this 1971 Capitol Theatre show (Port Chester, NY 2/19/71) now released as the two disc set, "Three From the Vault".
I'm sure there will be plenty of reviews, that recount better than I can, what a busy week Jerry & the boys were having in mid February '71. How they were premiering a truck load of new songs ("Loser", "Bertha", "Playing in the Band", "Warf Rat" "Greatest Story Ever Told", "Bird Song", "Deal"). How this particular show (2nd of a 6 night run) was the first without drummer, Mickey Hart, after an embarassing, embezzlement scandal, involving his father. How the GD used this particular gig's audience in a bon-i-fied, sci-en-ti-fic experiment (try saying it in Mr.Hainy's voice...) of the par-a-normal, thus giving it the nickname of "The ESP Show". But lets leave these details too Dennis McNally and the other historians in the crowd.
Whats really important is that this is really a gen-un-ine (try that Mr. Hainey voice again..) kick-a** show! You'll know it, when you hear it. Some GD archival releases, while interesting, tend to gather dust in your Dead music collection. Others keep finding their way again and again into the ol' CD tray, because they really have something special (think Dick's Picks 8). Well this is one of those releases. If there is any one recording, I would compare this show to, it would be the Dead's live 1971 "Skull & Roses" album. It not only shares the same material and time period, but it also seems to have the same boundless energy. But this is even better! While "Skull & Roses" had terrific performances ("It's been a favorite all these years!") it was mined from several performances ,while the "Three From the Vault" release feels much more unified, since it's all one complete show.
While many of the songs are in embryotic forms (and more tentative then what they would eventually become), they still are fun to listen to. I love this version of "Bird Song". It seems to have an almost light and spritely sound. Jerry's guitar is just wonderful on it. Other standouts include Bobby's folky "Dark Hollow", a rockin' "Greatest Story Ever Told" and Pigpen doing what only Pigpen can do on "Easy Wind". But for me the center piece of the show is "Thats It For the Other One". Maby Billy had something to prove that night, since he was taking over all the percussion duties. Who knows? But you can certainly hear him giving it his all in an artistically pleasing performance. This show's performances are hardly the most improvisational ones in the Dead's history, by a long shot, but they certainly are just plain terrific in their own way!
Finally, I want to mention how great "Three from the Vault" sounds. The guitars have an almost jangly Byrds-like sound and the vocals are crystal clear and out front in the recording. Kudos to all the folks involved in the mixing, mastering and engineering of this recording! It's like 'mother's milk'! A great show, that will find a lot of time in my CD player. Highly recommended!

Who says discipline is a bad thing? No one who's heard American Beauty, the Dead's greatest studio achievement. Showcasing 10 concise, country-rooted gems that sound equally good whether you're hanging on the front porch in the afternoon or nursing a bottle after hours, this one could win over many an anti-Jerry. Bewildered by loss both personal and social--the hippie dream was quickly crashing by Beauty's 1970 release date--the band put its querulousness ("Box of Rain") and wry humor ("Truckin'") into the service of a masterwork. The most impressive cut of all may be "Ripple," Garcia's spiritual credo. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Expanded & remastered (HDCD) version of the band's 1970 classic featuring many of the Dead's best-known songs plus 6 bonus tracks 'Truckin' (single version) & 5 live tracks 'Friend of the Devil', 'Candyman', 'Till The Morning Comes', 'Attics of My Life' & 'Truckin'. Digipak. Warner/Rhino. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
"What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been".......2007-06-18
This isn't in the same league as the previous Workingman's Dead. But like that album, American Beauty is a must, even if you're not a Deadhead, and I'm not one. The bad news is that they stretch a couple of these songs to the breaking point (Attics of My Life; Candyman), something they wisely avoided on Workingman's, and while I can't say I hate Till the Morning Comes, it doesn't really impact me all that much.
Now for the rest of the album, which is excellent. The back-porch folk Friend of the Devil is my favorite Dead song ever. The philisophical Ripple, pleasant opener Box of Rain, fine country-rocker Operator, groupie ode Sugar Magnolia, the oddly eerie Brokedown Palace, and the self-mythologizing rocker Truckin' (you know, the one with the famous double entendre "What a long, strange trip it's been!") make up the rest of my favorites. You'll note that's the rest of the album, which basically means "this is a very good album!" Because it is. Far better than the "classic" Live/Dead. This and its predecessor are two essential albums.
True beauty...........2007-04-20
Many love to talk about the Grateful Dead and their marathon concerts. Having seen them 12 times (including the last 2 shows Jerry Garcia did), I can attest to their great live prowess. But they were just as good in the studio, and this album proves that beyond any doubt. This is my favorite Dead album, a country pop masterpiece. The songs here have surprising depth and substance. Robert Hunter's lyrics are the best he ever wrote, and the tunes are absolutely beautiful. This album sounds more countryish than anything (especially on the ballads), perhaps because the Dead were listening heavily to Merle Haggard and country radio at this time. This has that "Bakersfield" sound (as an amazon friend told me), and that's why it resonates so deeply with me, because I love that sound. This album has more depth than current country music. It's a lovely album, arguably the Grateful Dead's best....
a rock masterpiece........2007-03-22
this is the grateful dead's masterpiece. can't be touched. robert hunter's finest batch of lyrics; songs populated by outsiders and misfits doing their thing. divine melodies and harmonies, loads of toe-tapping feel good music. a couple of breathlessly beautiful slow numbers to boot. "truckin'" is as catchy a number as you'll find anywhere, with its propulsive bass rhythms carrying along robert hunter's great lyrics about a drug bust. the song also sports stinging electric guitar licks by garcia, and a chorus that enters your head and stays there long passed what a reasonable leaving time should be. this is great american music. a masterpiece. a classic. not to be missed.
CLASSIC.......2007-03-21
This is by far the best of the dead, no doubt about it. Even if you are not a deadhead or you dont like them that much, get it anyway because some of the best music of the century is on here.
An arrangement of some of the Dead's best songs........2007-03-20
There is no doubt that these songs are among the best in American musical history. If you have never heard the Dead before or want to try to get into them, this might be a good place to start.
But you can't review Dead albums the way you review other bands. 4 stars, because these are good but not the best performances of these songs.
Other bands release their "material" in "albums". Other bands have their songs all written out. The Dead do not just have "songs". They have versions upon versions and arrangments upon arrangements of all their songs...so that their individual songs are more like a framework for the band to build up into a unique artwork at every concert.
If you like the tunes on this CD, I recommend you next get the live album "Reckoning". [...]. There is a whole universe of excellent music out there, once you get into the Grateful Dead.

"Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed!" - Dead for Non Deadheads.......2007-06-18
If you can't stand the "cosmic" stuff, this and American Beauty are the Grateful Dead albums for you. This is a classic country-rock album - one of my favorites in the genre, along with Harvest and Beggars Banquet. Eight tracks, and seven get my full blessing: the best are the anthem Uncle John's Band, the Dylan-esque Dire Wolf, appropriately boogieing New Speedway Boogie, the longish folk song Black Peter, and of course the infamous Casey Jones (the one that goes "Drivin' that train, high on cocaine"). There's not a sprawling, sidelong jam in sight - everything's under six minutes, in fact. And it's very enjoyable roots music with lyrics that are a lot more interesting than the '60s Dead's acid-induced ramblings (Easy Wind, Uncle John's Band). The only song not of note is High Time - otherwise, this is an essential release. Even for those who don't like Live/Dead and the others.
The Classic GRATEFUL DEAD Album........2007-05-28
Since I'm not a diehard DEAD fan, but I wanted to buy one album...I took the advice of a reviewer who stated that Workingman's Dead is THE one to get, if you get only one!
All the titles are long-time classics now; "Casey Jones" being the most popular of them all.
This is probably the best GRATEFUL DEAD studio release.
'Nuff said?
4 1/2 stars.......2007-03-22
one of the grateful deads two great studio albums (the other being the sublime masterpiece "american beauty"). this is a mostly gentle countryish affair with acoustic guitars, fine harmonies, and easy flowing rhythms. only "easy wind," a blues number (and a song with hypnotic drum patterns, by the way), and the classic "casey jones" have electric guitar, to my recollection. the album opener "uncle john's band" is one of robert hunter's finest lyrics, and a dead classic, as well. little bit of spanish feel to garcia's guitar work on that one. the remastered version definitely has an much improved sound over the original cd version. so get that one. of the six bonus cuts, only the live version of "uncle john's band," is really essential. the other five add nothing, and i feel actually detract from, the excellence of the original 8 tracks. a small quibble though, as the bonus cuts cost you nothing extra, and you can always skip 'em. all in all, a fine, very enjoyable studio set, with two bonafide classic songs. highly recommended.
Fantastic Album.......2007-01-24

The best of the Dead.......2007-07-07
Quite an awesome CD- Covers everything from the early hits to later music- Takes you from "Truckin'" to "Touch of Grey" all with great digital quality- A must for anyone checking out the band's music now- All the Deadheads already have it-
Like it alot.......2007-07-03
It is great car music. Not "jammy" so I don't have to worry about breaking into dance while driving! Would be better if it did have a live tune or two.
groovy tunes.......2007-05-14
I love the Dead and this is a great collection of some of their best!!!
Jerry will live on thru his music
The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion).......2007-05-12
This album does not exist for the converted. It's not here for the tried and true Deadhead. You've already got all of this, most likely in a far superior live version from a sound board tape.
This collection exists for that guy who has heard "Touch of Grey" and "Truckin'" on the radio and wants to own them, but doesn't want to wear tye-die. It exists for that young kid who has heard legend of the Dead, but was too young too see them and missed the boat. It exists for the folks who are curious about their music yet feels intimidated by the vast amount of material available out there (106 officially released titles to date, not including all the tapes out there...) .
This disc exists for these folks, and in that light it works very well. Sure, it's incomplete as any single-disc best of by a band who recorded for 30 years would be, but it covers all the major bases. And it does so better than the "Skeletons...", "...Long Strange Trip..." and "Arista Years" compilations do, and is far-superior in sound quality than any of them. Above all, it whets the appetite for more.
So for the uninitiated, this is the best place to begin your long, strange trip. For some, this may be all you need. But chances are you'll find yourself wanting more...
the best of the best.......2007-04-11
ANY BEGINER GRATEFUL DEAD FAN SHOULD BUY THIS CD

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigal

First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.
The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.
1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.
The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.
Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.
Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20
There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.
"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.
I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.
Love it.......2007-05-19
I am not a dead head fan...but like alot of their music...This is the best.Purchased for my husbands birthday!! Made him very happy.
We love it around here.I think its well worth the money spent.
Brings Back Memories.......2007-03-10

''2ND TIER BAND INDEED''.......2007-07-12
Reading these overblown hyped up reviews was truly a treat!!To much acid i suspect, especially S.king.The claim that they had better '5 part' harmony then the BEACH BOYS is especially ridiculous and also the claim that J.Spence was a top 5 best guitarist makes me cringe ,just listen to his vibrato and string bending and you'll hear the same amatuerish uncontrolled drivel that many lower tiered guitarist displayed in that era.I know this soundS like just a bashing session but it is not,it's just reality., the music on this disc is very good for what it is a SAN FRANCISCO TYPE MUSIC BAND, NO BETTER NO WORSE THAN THE OTHERS FROM THAT AREA AND TIME!
On Your Way To Omaha.......2007-07-09
Where exactly do place Moby Grape in the strata of American pop music circa 1966-69? I can't honestly place them in the upper echelon with the likes of The Byrds, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, Hendrix and the Doors. But certainly they do belong smack-dab in the middle of the second tier, with The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Dead, Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Mamas & Pappas, Santana, Steve Miller Band and of course Love, the other great Bay area band that never had a top-40 hit.
With that said "Listen My Friends" will provide you with your 20 song fix of MG. I wasn't a huge fan back then. But I did have the first two Lp's and I have really enjoyed getting back into Ooh Mama Ooh!!!Grape Moby Music....Or is that Murderous vendetta for The Judge that keeps you comming back for another look at Motorcycle Ireane?.. What ever your taste in Grape Jam, this collection is all vintage and ripe. Pop a grape into your mouth right now and you'll be on your way to Omaha....Ooh Mama Ooh...Omaha!!!!Enjoy.
Reviewing the group rather than the record.......2007-06-12
A new record is out, and I want to know if it is good. I already know the previous work of Moby Grape and I do not need Sam King telling me how good the group is. He is right but redundant. I want to know if there is anaything new on the record that I have not got or heard. From reading the 8 reviewers, I see no mention of any new material. I assume that everything on the record is recycled from the original releases and several previous compilations. A proper review might then begin with: "why does anyone need this. The second hand stores have copies of the previous compilations." The next issue is why the record company did not release something new, like the Amsterdam concert. Should record companies be rewarded when they have such conservative release policies. Why buy these songs again? Foolish, right.
Doesn't Live Up to the Hype.......2007-06-09
Moby Grape is absolutely the most over-rated group to emerge from the late sixties. What little appeal they might have had is mitigated by the ridiculous claims of their followers, i.e. "better first album than the Beatle, Byrds, Stones, Airplane et al". At best, this is a highly debatable claim. At worst, it's a complete falsehood (my view).
Spence's work on the first two Airplane albums is better than his work with the Grape thanks to the far superior vocals of Marty Balin/Signe Anderson/Grace Slick and the intiguing guitar interplay provided by Casady, Kantner and Kaukonen.
I've tried to get into the Grape, several times. But the hype is such a turn off. Particularly when the group fails miserably to live up to it.
It's time to have some grape in the collection.......2007-05-26
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I had the honor of interviewing Jerry Miller. His stories of what the band went through made it clear that even with so many forces against them cream will still go to the top.
This is a terrific introduction to the group. While the fanatic (Rightly so) will always find songs that should have been included, those that are on this package will give you all sides of the Moby experience. They could rock, they could play, and their music was and is a great represenstation of the amazing sounds that eminated from the city by the bay.
If you are in Omaha or Ohio listen my friends and get a taste of the grape. It'll be rather pleasing.
Be well always,
Craig Fenton

A great Live show!.......2007-02-22
I found the record version of this in my basement. Sadly, for about 3 years I could not listen to it and other amazing grateful dead records because it seemed that no one in america had a record player anymore. But I finally bought the cd and good god Is this good! it truly is an awesome piece of music, it can stand the test of time, and it is really good to listen to for whatever occasion. This is by far one of the best live albums the dead released, it is up there with "Live/dead" and "truckin up to buffalo july 4th 1989" But it as soon as humanly possible.
An interesting live album despite the overdubs.......2006-10-13
This is a great live album dispite that it doesn't really represent the period right. Spring tour 1971 featured alot of Pigpen tunes in the setlists but only one appears here. Due to Pigpen's illness, most of his parts are erased and overdubbed by Merle Saunders. Vocal overdubs were also added. On all of the lp copies you hear Phil singing backing vocals on Bertha. For whatever reason, on all the new remixed, remastered and newly released albums for this period this also happens. Buy this disc with Ladies and Gentlemen and get a good dose of the Dead from spring'71. Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road is one of the all time best.
A Mixed Bag, with Moments of Greatness.......2006-06-02
For their second `official' live album, the Grateful Dead switched gears a bit from their previous endeavor. While "Live/Dead" accentuated the jamming aspect of the band, spreading five songs over four sides (the three tracks on side four really constitute one performance), this collection goes for a breezier feel. Here, eleven tracks fill out four sides, allowing room for only one meandering jam ("The Other One"), which does little to add to the legacy already created by "Live/Dead". When performing their own original material, this album succeeds completely on its own terms. "Bertha" is one of the chirpiest jam tunes the Dead ever came up with - enough to inspire Los Lobos to do a faithful cover version - while "Playing in the Band" gives Bob Weir the opportunity to indulge in some rock and roll. It's only when the band attempts to incorporate songs previously made famous by others that the album veers out of bounds. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a pointless endeavor, especially in light of Janis Joplin's definitive version, while there really aren't too many people who would consider a Grateful Dead version of "Johnny B. Goode" to be essential listening.
Grateful Dead works mostly because it presents a fairly accurate overview of the band's strengths (and weaknesses). Energetic `cover' songs such as "Mama Tried" and "Big Railroad Blues" provide an opportunity for the band to get down to basics and play like a fully integrated bar band. "Wharf Rat", meanwhile, shifts moods, sounding simultaneously desperate and hopeful, allowing the band to grease its improvisational tendencies to full effect. Most telling is the jam that ties Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" to the public-domain folk song "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad." This segue pretty much summarizes the best bits of the album, combining instinct, tradition and energy into a unique synthesis that transcends either basic song. Coming on the heels of two exceptional studio recordings, more people were listening to the Dead, and this album does an excellent job of retaining old fans while seducing new ones. Combining elements of their `traditional' jamming with a batch of nicely constructed new songs, Grateful Dead does a laudable job of offering something for everybody.

....THAT OLD COUNTRY FEELING........2006-04-06
In the sixties The Grateful Dead were the premiere group in the scene of Psychedelic Jam Rock. They made their way up the ranks by playing infamous live shows that were famous for "the vibe."
What was the vibe? Well basically the band and the audience would become one, sometimes on the music (which was excellent at times) and sometimes on loads of drugs (in these cases the music was nothing more than a few intangible notes repeated over and over.---see LIVE/DEAD)
By the early seventies however, The Dead had reached a new phase. They found that, a little bit of proffesionalism, and a little less partying, was actually making them successful. In the same year the band released their two masterpiece albums WORKINGMANS DEAD and AMERICAN BEAUTY, and launched what became their first major (major) tour. This all happened years before I was even concieved, but when you look through my DEAD collection, this is the era where I hop on board. The laid back, country style, that far better showcases the bands talent, over the sixties psychedelia. GRATEFUL DEAD (aka SKULL and ROSES) was the bands next release, and really basks itself in country feel. The whole thing was recorded live, but stands to be the first published recording for every track contained within. Excellent stuff, some of The Deads best, for sure.
Right off we get the now bonafied classics BERTHA, MAMA TRIED, ME AND MY UNCLE etc.
Bob Weirs Dead introduction of PLAYING IN THE BAND, and there are also a few cover songs... ME AND BOBBY MCGEE (a different kind of version, nice) JOHNNY B. GOODE, and BIG BOSS MAN (W/Pigpen on vocals for that-yeah)-
This should be part of your DEAD collection, I'd say. If you like the country side of THE DEAD, without all the space out jams, this is for you.
Jerry's 'On'.......2005-09-03
I read somewhere that Jerry said this record epitomised what the Dead were all about. and after hearing it again ,re-mastered after all these years I agree .I had this on vinyl while living in London in the 70's(a double LP) I liked it then and I love it now . Jerry's guitar never sounded better (especially on the remaster -great job whoever is responsible )Song selection is what they were doing back then .This is the disc that has the famous , Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away'' seguing into Woody Guthries' , "Goin Down The Road Feelin Bad" and the superb Big Railroad Blues(was that Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers?) .All tunes contain astounding band performances Kicking off with "Bertha" ,and Jerry's axe shines throughout . I would recommend this to anyone new to the Dead ,as a great place to start. This remastered version contains two extra tracks that could have been left off .. The Coasters' Im A Hog For You Baby, and Buddy Holly's Oh Boy! .. 'Hog' is the better of the two , but neither of these performances enhance the disc .. but, there again .. some Deadheads might be ecstatic that this extra material is on here.

My First Listen and Impressed........2007-04-26
For the record, I am not 13 years old. I just don't have an account on Amazon, seeing as how you must purchase something through the website in order to get an account. In fact, I am 19 years old and an avid music lover. I'm more into genres such as Metalcore, Punk Rock, etc., however, I will listen to almost anything if it catches my attention and interests me. What matters to me is quality, not quantity. I want to know if I'm getting my money's worth. I could care less if there are 25 songs on an album or only 3 songs on an album, though it'd be more like a severe lacking LP. I care about the quality of the recording, lyrical value, musicianship, and so on.
I've never really cared for the Grateful Dead. Don't ask me why because I couldn't answer you. I just don't know. Though I was born in 1987, I have a big interest in the hippie culture. I'm also a firm believer in marijuana legalization and I could definitely back up reasons why. This album was my first listen. It sounds like a VERY relaxing, peace, and chill collection of what seem to be some of the Grateful Dead's best work. Of course not all of their best work is featured here, but it's a start for beginners. I'm a perfect example; Hence the title of my review. Some songs are slower than others, but you just feel so relaxed when you listen to this album and get into it. I couldn't imagine having an experience under the influence with this album, but I hope to have such an experience sometime in the very near future.
If you're not so sure about purchasing the album, at least give it a listen. Hell, buy or download a few tracks and experience the Grateful Dead for yourself. You won't regret because I definitely don't. I may actually eventually end up purchasing a Grateful Dead release.

THE DEADS GARAGE DISC.......2007-01-30
1967, San Fran... from what I hear, this album never scored very much attention when it came out, nor really ever, from what it seems. For many, this disc is much different than what they are used to from The Dead, but this establishes the bands first excursion to the studio, which is a place that, yes, they were never very comfortable with... (in fact they have admitted that they were ALL hyped up on various psychedelic drugs during these sessions, and had sort of a rough time recording it..)
However, it is sort of a guilty pleasure album for me. I love The Dead, but am way more of a fan of the stuff after they seperated from the psychedelic sixties thing... this ain't my favorite, but sometimes I can really dig the vibe...
There are the singles GOLDEN ROAD, and the more enjoyable MINGLEWOOD (one of my signature picks from way back).. there are equally as catchy tunes like BEAT IT ON DOWN THE LINE and theres the gutter blues via Pigpen GOOD MORNING LITTLE SCHOOL GIRL (though not as developed as some more classic live versions).. plus lots of early Jerry Garcia trips like CREAMPUFF WAR and MORNING DEW.
A certain mood has to strike me to really get down and listen to The Grateful Dead. Theres a different mood that strikes for this album in particular... a sixties garage album all the way, and excellent in that vain (which is what I've been all about lately)....Rhinos DEAD remasters rule all over the place... they all have a sound far superior to the original releases and mucho extras.. so, pop a flower in your hair and get ready to dance in that weird, tripped out flower child kind of groove, baby. Deads first.
Not quite Dead yet.......2007-01-20
I remember when this LP first showed up in record stores. I heard it but never bought it. The Rhino HDCD release with extra tracks makes me wonder why I didn't buy the album so many years ago. Not quite Dead yet, their signiture sound and style were not all there on this LP, but it is a nice listen nonetheless. And that's from someone who is/was not a Deadhead. All the Rhino Grateful Dead reissues have sounded refreshingly wonderful.
The Grateful Dead's first released album .......2006-12-02
This is actually a pretty good album and it includes some fun early stuff. The songs are not as good as they would come up with later but it does give a good clue as to what the band was doing at that point in their career. Most of the songs on the album were covers. One of the songs - The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) has been a fan favorite for years. This was also before Robert Hunter came back into the scene to write the lyrics. The new bonus tracks are very good and a nice listen.

So many other bands do the same thing so much better..........2007-06-14
Okay, I'm not some ADD-induced kid complaining about how all songs should be between two and four minutes. I quite like jammming, when it's done right - I am, after all, a fan of Pink Floyd, the Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, Cream and several jazz artists. But the Dead don't have the chops of any of them. Other than Jerry Garcia. He's an impressive guitarist. But he can't save this from being excessive. The Allmans would've smoked Turn on Your Lovelight, but under the Dead it's just a turgid, feel-good quarter-hour blues jam. And jamming the hell out of everything doesn't suit The Eleven or Feedback (nine minutes of feedback - what was the purpose of THAT?) I like bits of Dark Star (I think in this incarnation it's the Dead's signature song), and I certainly enjoy the way it rises and falls, but they could've played it in seven or eight minutes rather than dragging it out to past twenty. To draw another Allmans comparison, Mountain Jam is even LONGER (33:39!), and I love every minute of it.
While I do dig Garcia's blues guitar on Death Don't Have No Mercy (that's one dynamic guitar solo!), you have to sit through the awful three-minute croaked vocal section to get to it, and when it ends, you get MORE CROAKING! Why couldn't it just been a solo feature for Jerry? That I would've certainly enjoyed.
The one entire song I like here, then, is St. Steven. Damn and a bucket of fries (for what's a damn without a bucket of fries on the side?), that's a killer song. It's a rocker singalong gospel rave-up... sweet. Easily my favorite. Easily. But too much of this just strikes me as aimless... I know this is a nominal classic, but I prefer several other jam-oriented releases. Now, to me the Dead stand out as a country-folk band, the band who made American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. That's good stuff. They were not, in my mind, cut out to be a jam band.
Pick up this album now.......2007-06-08
First let me state I'm not a fan of the Grateful Dead mainly because most of their music sounds the same to me. A bit more diversity wouldn't have hurt. At the same time, I respect what they did, and I respect their unique approach and everything the band was able to accomplish in their long and successful career.
I really like this Live/Dead album. I can't really complain about lack of diversity either because there's a few different styles the band used to do back in the day, and this album is pretty much the ultimate example of the Grateful Dead's greatness in the early days. I think it's a highly enjoyable listen, from beginning to end. If there was ever one Grateful Dead album you needed, this would probably be the one.
"Dark Star" is 23 minutes of mellow guitar jamming with only a *very* small amount of vocal work in two spots. I consider myself a BIG fan of guitar jams, and I especially like the jams where the music feels like it's coming straight from the soul. I can't fault the Grateful Dead here, because every time they go into jam mode, their music instantly becomes more enjoyable to me. A 23-minute jam is certainly the right way to kick things off!
When that monster is finally over, it's only right to have the follow up song be something more melodic (in order to shift gears and keep everyones attention). "Saint Stephen" does just that. The Grateful Dead were also very good at being emotionally-connecting to the listener, and this song is proof of that.
"The Eleven" features more jamming like you heard in "Dark Star", only "The Eleven" is more in-your-face with more excitement and energy. This is probably my favorite song on the album. "Turn On Your Love Light" reminds me of a fast-paced boogie song from the 50's like "Jailhouse Rock" or something along those lines, but extended for 15 minutes. I have to wonder if Led Zeppelin was influenced by "Death Don't Have No Mercy" because "Since I've Been Loving You" almost has an identical style (from Zeppelin III). It's possible Zeppelin copied, but I doubt it. Most people probably wouldn't be able to hear the similarity anyway.
Alright, "Feedback" is probably the worst thing on the album. It's not a song- just a bunch of noises. But it's not as pointless or outrageously annoying as say, the last song on the Stooges album Funhouse. "And We Bid You Goodnight" is just a 30-second thingy with pleasant vocals.
The Grateful Dead seemed to me like they were a two-trick pony. You had your lengthy "feeling good" guitar jams, and you had your pleasant country rockers. However, this Live/Dead album is proof that the band was able to implement other styles into their career. For someone who likes diversity, this album satisfies my needs.
if this was to be the only 60s dead album you'd buy make it this one.......2007-04-21
this is a great album this is exactly how it would of been like to seem them live back in 1969 a perfect cd example of what the dead is most famous for.....the jams my freind is what they were most famous for and this cd represents it so if your starting up a dead collection make this be one of your first buys
A Must Dead CD.......2007-03-11
This is THE classic early Dead CD. In addition to the well-known version of Dark Star, the CD contains an alternative style version.
PERFECT.......2007-03-07
There's no such thing as objetivity, and I ain't gonna try to reach it anyway. This record is simply PERFECT, that is all I can say. No even a minimal flaw. Not at all. Majestic beauty.

The 1969 double album Live/Dead holds a special place in the Deadhead universe; indeed, many band members and their inner circle consider it to be the band's best overall collection as well. This expanded, three-CD edition is culled from the same February/March '69 shows at the Dead's de facto live home, San Francisco's Fillmore West. What's documented here are not only some of the greatest performances of the band's early era, but the still-evolving template for much of the band's later flights of improvisation. The first, blues-dominated disc pays tribute to a band that a couple years earlier had been but an ambitious bar covers ban! d, while the second chronicles the Dead's expansive "Dark Star/St. Stephen/The Eleven" triptych wed to a cover of the Rev. Gary Davis' "Death Don't Have No Mercy," 2/28/69 performances that turn on the freeform interplay that would become their trademark for decades to follow. The set's final disc is highlighted by a vigorous, nearly hour-long workout that jams its way through the band's early "Alligator," "Caution" and the obligatory drum break to the traditional closer, "We Bid You Goodnight." Said to be the first 16-track live recording, the epochal performances here are burnished to near sonic perfection via HDCD mastering, a heady, if ironic wedding of technology and the band's rootsy, musical humanity. --Jerry McCulley

Absolutely essential.......2007-04-24
These 3 discs (there is a limited edition 10 disc set which has obviously sold out!!)are a continuation of Live Dead. If you haven't heard the Dead Live then start with this or Live Dead.
You will realise why to many they were America's greatest improvisational rock band. The playing, the interplay between the musicians - particularly Garcia and Lesh is staggering. And how about a big hand for Bill Kreutzman on drums?
Fillmore West 1969.......2006-10-13
Pretty good performances. I don't like the fact that since 2001, the idea seems to be to erasing Bob's voice from the last 4 to 5 minutes of Lovelight on all the multitrack releases. Disc 2 starts with a cool pairing of Dupree's into Mountains Of The Moon. The Dark Star that follows is very good and it was recorded the night after the Live Dead version as is the following Saint Stephen. The Eleven is always nice to hear and this is no exception. Death Don't Have No Mercy is strong also. The That's It For The Other One that starts off the third disc is powerful. The Alligator/Caution jam is one of the best
Snapshot from their peak years.......2006-09-20
This three-disc set tracks the Grateful Dead's performances during the height of their early power. The material collected here had been previously bootlegged by the Dead's legion of collecting fans, but this official release cherry picks the finest performances and adds lengthy liner notes and many color photographs to create a nice package. While the music contained herein demonstrates the breadth of the bands music, certain things do stand out. For me it was Ron "Pigpen" McKernan lending the band some bluesy credibility that they may have otherwise lacked. Pigpen plays swirling organ and some strong harmonica throughout the music, but is heard to best effect on the blues songs he took lead vocals on.
He leads the band through an absolutely charging version of Bobby Bland's "Turn on Your Lovelight" and sings with great authority on Muddy Waters' "King Bee" and John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl." The rest of the band is certainly not to be undone, as the music alternates between spacey on "Mountains on the Moon," "Dark Star" and blasting rock and roll on tracks like "Cosmic Charlie" and the go-for-broke final concert ending medley jam. In a sense this music would be the high water mark of the band's early period, with a shift to acoustic instruments and the first of many personnel additions and subtractions on the way. Still, this is a great snapshot of one of the finest live-performance bands in rock and roll history.
For die hard fans only.......2006-08-15
Other reviewers have said it. This is very good stuff, but it shows that whoever put together Live/Dead really got it right. Die hard fans and dead collectors will love this. But since I don't quite rise to that level, I was a bit disappointed. Sure there are places were the band is off, but what this album really shows is what a mismatch Tom Constanten (on keyboards) was with this band. The five core members are starting to soar into new realms and Constanten's soul-less keyboard is often front and center in these recordings, keeping the group's left foot firmly nailed to the ground. In Live/Dead his damage was minimized in the mix somehow.
Beautiful..........2006-07-14
I`ve bought this today... And I`m not happy about that! It`s a shame that I didn`t buy it that very first moment I saw it in the store! This is beautiful piece of music. Beautiful... If you like Live/Dead you gonna like this one. I`m not gonna write comments about versions of songs here and there... They`re different and that`s good. Enjoy...
