Inside Job
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Often taken to task for the maudlin mellowness of his back catalog, Don Henley's viewpoint on Inside Job is frequently as astringent as any of the best of his solo work, if refreshingly more stylistically diverse. Whether skewering the self-absorbed target of "Nobody Else in the World but You" with some welcome funk or lambasting the corporate co-opting of Mother Nature in "Goodbye to a River," Henley still wears his heart proudly on his sleeve. But the changes in his life have also blunted a previous propensity for self-righteousness into something more akin to subtle, resigned irony, and this album wears it well, especially on strangely downbeat "celebrations" like "For My Wedding." Featuring a typically all-star cast of guest musician pals (including Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, Glenn Frey, and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench), coproducer Stan Lynch (formerly of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) has helped Henley fashion a more timeless, deftly shaded production envelope that should age better than most. Though he still can't help lament his world's hardening and loss of innocence (to the point of "They're Not Here, They're Not Coming," echoing Randy Newman's "Trouble in Paradise" nostalgic plea to "bring back the Duke of Earl"), Henley does it here with a subtle grace that may just win him a few new, late-blooming fans. It's an album that underscores how quickly life's fine wine can unexpectedly turn to vinegar. --Jerry McCulley

Yuck.......2006-11-10
Now I know why I never picked this up when it first came out...ah, the pitfalls of a completist. NOWHERE near his three 80's releases. Don should spend his time fighting for the environment instead of music.
The Ballads does it. This is gentlemans rock , and no bullshit.......2005-09-20
Don Henley is a shining star. On this one it`s the ballads who does it. The reason for no 5 stars on this album, is that some of the other tracks with more tempo beats, doesnt give me the ultimate Henley experience. Sure the voice is there, but when he show further development from The End of the Innocence track, from 1989 Cd, im totally blown away. Track 2 Taking Your Home is nearly up there, with The End of The Innocence. Its the ultimate soundpicture, so carefully developed . On Track 3 there are one other ballad to come with the Title For my Wedding . The tempo up beat Workin It is also a winner. Track 12 Annabel is my favourite, and has much of the soundpicture you can find on Desperado.
Its Don Henley voice who does it. Theres something in it which is difficult to describe with pure words. Just listen to it and it will tickling youre instincts. This one makes me shiver. All in all and album nearly up at The End of the Innonce standard.
"They say it's just the predatory nature of the beast".......2005-03-09
A mature and wizened Don Henley emerged from the woodwork to gift us his first solo album in almost a dozen years with 2000's "Inside Job." Frequently poignant and personal, and still as opinionated as ever, it's odd to listen to Henley's rants on environmentalism and corporate robber baron scumbags, and then think of what he would have been singing on an album post Enron, 9/11 and "four more years." Even prior to those events, his barbs still sting.
Between this album and "End Of The Innocence," Henley founded the Walden project. It's not a mere rock star vanity project, as Henley has used his time and money to support the preservation of Thoreau's legacy and beloved Walden Woods against developers who wanted to turn the land into a housing development. His concerns are reflected in the song "Goodbye To A River," which questions how corporations and greed so ruthlessly destroy for profit things and places and timelessness. At the same time, he skewers the corporate mentality that would "take away the right to own your own ideas." Hollywood biz-pigs also gets hammered on "Nobody Else In The World But You" and "Workin' It."
But all is not totally self righteous on "Inside Job." Perhaps most poignant is "Damn It Rose," where Henley laments a friend's suicide. He takes the time to look at his own reflection, wondering about his past life of "doing exactly what I used to do, pretensions to anarchy and art." The final two songs on the CD also speak to the domestic pleasure that Henley, a man past 50, has also grown to love. Both "My Thanksgiving" and "Annabel" speak of a man more at peace with himself that the rebel Eagle of old. The musicianship is top notch, helmed frequently by Tom Petty's Heartbreaking buddies Stan Lynch and Mike Campbell, along with guest appearances by Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman. It makes "Inside Job" an enjoyable (although not essential) listen from one of our best American songwriters.
You get the love that you allow...........2005-03-01
The problem with an artist like Don who is so "current events" oriented is that his material gets dated very quickly and, therefore, doesn't hold up well over time. Not to say this album is a waste. Far from it. His bar is set pretty high so giving this cd a 3 star rating is like giving other artists a 5. "For my wedding" "Taking you home" "Annabelle" "They're not here" and "Everything is different now" are all very, very good tunes. And, to me, "Thanksgiving" is a letter to the same person he wrote "Heart of the Matter" to on his previous album. He's at his very best when he writes from his soul and most of this album comes directly from that source. It's only when he goes on a personal rant that makes some of the other songs irrelevant after a couple of years.
Henley's Best.......2005-01-07
This is not a continuation of the Eagles. This is the mature, full blown man, husband, father, & human being that Don Henley is today. There is some very good blues, several nice, slow love ballads, and a couple of nice rockin' tunes. Personally I loved "They're Not Here" and especially "Miss Ghost". The album shows Don Henley isn't limited to being a rocker. He can now be called an artist. Which means, of course, many won't like this album. His politics are evident, as always. But there's also heart and soul here. Too many are gonna listen to this and say "You've changed. I don't know you any more." Well, that's what life's about. And Henley's isn't about just the music. Although I think the music's pretty good. It's the whole package. For those of us old enough to have walked this road. We can relate this this music. But others aren't going to like it.

Classic Christian Rock.......2006-03-10
Anyone who enjoyed Dion as a fifties rocker will not be disappointed. My favorite is "Man in the Glass". Thanks Dion for spreading the gospel in a rainbow of musical styles.
Absolutely outstanding, The Master inspires a master .......2006-01-28
I heard "Only Jesus " in the 80s for the first time , and the music have stuck with me for 20 long years . When I saw that it was released in CD it was a happy day . This is a real masterpiece and I'm a musician, I'm a composer and I say that with boldness.Songs like "the best", c'mon , who can improve that ?.
But it's song after song, style after style ,performance after performance with so honest inpired performances . The record develop in a natural manner and the songs remains in the memory forever.
"Inside Job " have great songs too like "The truth will set you free " . As I say in other review , listen to Dion 's gospel records and you will learn quite a lot about being honest and truthful in songwriting and performing.
I mean this is serious stuff musically and in terms of emotional performances . I have heard a lot of music in my life and i tell you , I can still hear these songs in a 20 years time. I can't say that about all the stuff that's around....
At long last, two masterpieces come to CD!.......2005-02-24
Dion is, without question, one of the supreme talents in popular music. The early hits established him as a remarkable vocalist, and his artistic growth throughout the years has been astonishing. These two albums represent the pinnacle of Dion's most intimate and moving work, and 25 years after their initial release they remain remain, not just relevant, but vital and vibrant.
I have a vivid memory of lying in bed at the age of six, a Saturday morning sun filtering in through the blinds, and hearing the haunting melody that is "Only Jesus" drifting up from my father's record-player. I remember being moved beyond what I could understand, and in later years I discovered the richness contained in that record, as well as "Inside Job."
Both records find Dion in a bluesy mood, wrapping his warm vocals around soft groovy melodies and organic instrumentation. The music doesn't assault the ears, it beckons and washes over you, drawing you into it's world. Lilting vocal melodies are often juxtaposed against minor-key tunes, while Dion's evocative lyrics evoke images of steamy city streets and disappearing youth.
Far from being dirges, however, these songs are nothing less than celebrations; the joy of discovering a rich faith is evident on every track. The best tracks, like "The Truth Will Set You Free" and "Only Jesus," manage to pull off the trick that most gospel songs cannot: expressions of grace in the midst of a fallen world, and life.
I have longed to see these two records transferred to the CD format, and now that they are here, I'll be able to savor their sweetness for many years to come. Highly, highly recommended.
Dion's Entry Into Gospel Music!.......2004-05-23
For those of us who love both Dion DiMucci's voice and style and folk-rock, his unexpected movement into the field of gospel music rendered several memorable albums which not only are inspirational and entertaining, but are accomplished with verve, style, and terrific production values and superb arrangements. Dion showcases his unique vocal style here, with many of the songs literally flowing along as he works his way through them effortlessly. I first came across the second of the two efforts reproduced here in the early 1980s while living in London, and it certainly found its way onto a home-made cassette for playing in my neat 1982 red English Volvo as we wandered through the sylvan English countryside with Dion providing the musical accompaniment. My favorites here are "Hearts Made Of Stone", "Sweet Surrender, and "Only Jesus". Okay, I lied. My own favorite is really "The Best", which is a short title for a wondrous word poem that tells us "the best thing I can tell you is God loves you", which is certainly a message all of us can use to advantage these troubled days. No matter how many times I hear it, the complete coda of lyrics make me misty-eyed. In short, this is a terrific album, both as a work of gospel music or as a folk-rock entry that happens to have some serious Christian intent associated with it. Dion seldom disappoints, and he can slay you with a single word just by the way he sings it. His style is truly unique, and it is lovingly showcased here. Enjoy!
He stopped "Wandering".......2003-09-12
This combination of Dion's first 2 offerings as a born again Christian, were a highlight for me in the late 70s, early 80s. The Wanderer had come home to Jesus. And God had performed the "Inside Job" on Dion's heart. The track "The Truth Will Set You Free", still stands as the albums best. From the street gangs to Rock n Roll idol, his father's words echoed in his ears. In "Sweet Surrender" he talks about the confusion in his life until he surrendered to his creator. "Thought I was bad and I had to get good, thought I was smart but I misunderstood, felt I was lazy and I had to get busy, swore I was high but I was just plain dizzy, Oh sweet surrender!" The "Only Jesus" album continued with the sweetness of new life. "Sailing Ahead Of The Wind" must be played loud in the car with the wind blowing through your hair. And the title cut sums it all up. That's what his life is all about now. The haunting refrain at the end still brings those chills. If you are tired of the same old lines, well you get down to earth lyrics from Dion. Great stuff!

Review from All Music Guide, http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg........2004-02-15
AMG REVIEW: An album of straightforward jazz from Cynthia Mullis, one of only a handful of capable female jazz instrumentalists on the scene (many opt to be jazz vocalists instead). Here, the Seattle jazzer grooves her way through ten songs; roughly half standards and half original compositions, both from her and from bassist Doug Miller. She switches between emulating John Coltrane in her solos and emulating the bop sax lines when working through a chorus with the group. She can switch from a relatively high-powered Dexter Gordon number to a lighter Billy Strayhorn piece with seeming ease; and does so at the opening of the album (with some notable scatting by Becca Duran). As the album progresses, the group covers the original "Dolores Street" by Mullis, and the title track, "Inside Job," wherein Miller finds time to go on an extended but well worthwhile solo, bowing the bass. After another Miller composition, the group wanders into a Thelonious Monk number and shows surprising sensitivity to the intricacies of rhythm and emptiness presented by the eccentric master; almost getting lost in the territory of free jazz along the way. By the time they emerge from the ethereal piece, they move back into more standard works by Leo Robbin and Harold Ashby; giving the band some room to work within the more conventional realm. After another original number, somewhat reminiscent of Dizzy Gillespie's group work, the album finishes off with a Johnny Mercer song; adding a little more emphasis on the trombone than the rest of the pieces on the album. Overall, Inside Job is quite good. There are countless competing albums within the genre, but OA2 has a habit of finding the more notable players among the sea of local jazz musicians. This one is no exception. - Adam Greenberg
