Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Rather than compiling a mix tape for the road, Pete and Maura Kennedy went one better. For the husband-and-wife duo's first covers album, they put their signature stamp on 14 of their favorite songs for the van. Since the Byrds have always provided a touchstone for the Kennedys' blend of hooks, harmonies, and guitar jangle, it's no surprise that their transcendent version of "Eight Miles High" highlights this collection, along with dips into the songbooks of Byrds alumni Gene Clark ("Gypsy Rider") and the Flying Burrito Brothers ("Sin City"). In addition to the folk-rock of the '60s, the Kennedys show a penchant for '70s troubadours such as John Stewart ("Jasmine") and Bob Neuwirth ("Eye on the Road"). Yet the album's wild-card eclecticism also includes a transformation of Stephen Stills's "Pretty Girl Why" into a Brazilian samba, while material that ranges from Nick Lowe's "Raging Eyes" to Jimmy Webb's "Galveston" to Mahalia Jackson's "I'm on My Way" shows that musical inspiration knows no categorical bounds. The album ends as it must, with a Nanci Griffith song ("Late Night Grande Hotel"), for it was in Griffith's band where vocalist Maura and guitar virtuoso Pete came together and decided to go out on their own. --Don McLeese
Album Description
On "Songs of the Open Road," their ninth and latest CD, The Kennedys forego their own buoyant songs of transcendent twang to present new versions of their favorite traveling music written by others, a cosmic jukebox of folk, rock, country, pop and secular gospel material with philosophical underpinnings.
The first seconds of the CD's opener, Victoria Williams' "This Moment," are like slipping into a cool, calm pool, as Maura sings of appreciating each instant in life. After attuning us to the eternal now, The Kennedys head for the skies in a soaring version of The Byrds' "Eight Miles High," with a psychedelic swarm of guitars, electric sitar, and kinetic rhythm section, multi-instrumentalist Pete providing shadow-close harmonies to Maura's sweet 'n' sassy lead vocals.
The California folk-rock-country sound is heard often here as The Kennedys honor many great West Coast-based writers. Three former Byrds are represented: on the cautionary "Sin City" (co-written by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman while in the Flying Burrito Brothers) and on Gene Clark's elegantly mournful "Gypsy Rider." The bossa nova lilt of Stephen Stills' "Pretty Girl Why" soothes the apocalyptic anguish of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," which precedes it. "Galveston," Jimmy Webb's 1969 hit for Glenn Campbell, is a more oblique anti-war commentary as an overseas soldier yearns for his distant home and lover. Americana pioneer John Stewart provides the wistful "Jasmine," an alluring siren's call to tour, while Bob Neuwirth's "Eye on the Road" spells out the dangers of answering that sweet summons.
The ache of the traveling musician is also heard on "Late Night Grande Hotel," written by The Kennedys' friend and former employer, Nanci Griffith. Pete and Maura honor another soulmate, the late Dave Carter, by covering his twinkling "Happytown (All Right with Me)" and the yearning "Gypsy Rose."
Rounding out the CD are a rousing version of Mahalia Jackson's gospel declaration, "I'm on My Way," and a rocking rendition of Nick Lowe's "Raging Eyes."
With its wide assortment of source material, delicate thematic threads, and sparkling vocals and arrangements, Songs of the Open Road can't fail to expand The Kennedys' reputation as imaginative, joyful musicians, conceptualists and "a positive force on all things human" ("Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange").
Customer Reviews:
Love it........2007-05-13
I heard the tail end of a PBS special of the Kennedys. I wasn't even watching the program and honestly had never heard their music before. The program was on in the other room while I was on the computer and I stopped what I was doing to listen to them. I came on to amazon to see what was offered by them and picked this cd. I have to say, I just LOVE it. There is one, maybe two songs that I don't care for but I have been listening to it constantly in the car since I got it. Track 5, 9, and 11 are my favorites. It is getting a bit irritating though because the songs are in my head even when I am sleeping. I wake up hearing them. LOL. I encourage anyone to buy this Cd.

Open on the road..........2005-09-22
For a long time I didn't have a favorite Cowboy Junkies album, but "Open" sort of sneaked up on me and lodged itself in my CD player for weeks at a time. Nobody since Rickie Lee Jones (Flying Cowboys, anyone?) had done that to me, really.
So I seized this two disc set once I realized what it was. The live material is excellent, capturing the stage presence of the band. The video material is beautiful, highlighting the music. And the Michael/Margo Timmins interview material is engrossing, if some of the interviewer's questions verge on the worshipful--the principals are funny, thoughtful... it's...... nice. So I recommend this set highly, especially at the deep discounts you see here on Amazon.
Good Chance.......2005-09-03
"Open Road" is a good chance to see Cowboy Junkies. The band is always so discret, and in this CD/DVD they show a little more about themselves.
Another Great Live Cowboy Junkies Album / DVD..........2005-08-08
I bought this used (both CD / DVD) in a booklet package case instead of the double jewel case and I was extremely pleased what someone sold so I could buy it. This recording / filming has reconfirmed my thought that The Cowboy Junkies are one of the best bands still rolling the open road and progressing in the studio. Margo's voice is still stunning as ever with Michael Timmins ripping it up on electric guitar and the rest of the band keeping the rhythms forward. Michael T. is one of the most underated guitarist alive today, I'd say.
Order This Music Album /DVD Right Now! So, You don't Have To Wait Another Minute For The Splendor Of The Cowboy Junkies Live And On The Road Touring!

Customer Reviews:
May be Donovan's finest moment.......2005-04-27
As it all too often seems to happen, an artist produces his finest work at the same time his commercial appeal starts to slide.By the time this album was released in 1970, Donovan's string of hit singles was coming to an end. Riki Tiki Tavi was a minor hit on radio, and then...nothing.But, as I have said before, that doesn't mean the creative juices have dried up, or that artist is no longer relevant, only that the tastes of the mass market have shifted and are looking to something new. That's when an artist's fan base takes over and supports him
(or her). Concerts are well attended and albums continue to sell to some degree, but the artist in question no longer finds his face on magazine covers or mentioned in the same breath as the current entertainers. This album,"Open Road" was, and still is, a magnificent piece of work. Riki Tiki Tavi, Changes, Clara Clairvoyant, People Used To, New Years Resolvolution (no, that's not a misspelling) are wonderful, well crafted, intelligent songs
written and performed by an artist in his prime. It seems that Donovan went a little bit backward, toward his folkie style of music, but with a late sixties, early seventies twist. My opinion is that this is Donovan's finest album. If you know Donovan only as the guy who did "Mellow Yellow", then have a listen to the Open Road album. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
You'll find that life is so much more rewarding sometimes if you kill your own snakes, instead of depending on the church, the government, the schools to do it for you.
A True Nostalgic Gem Piece.......2005-01-07
After 34 years (!) OPEN ROAD is still my Donovan's favourite album and one of those to which I have returned all along those years, over and over again, and with the same pleasure (it has always been in my top 5 albuns of all time). And when Repertoire Records edited it on CD, in the beginning of the millenium, I felt myself one of the luckiest people on earth. Because this is a true nostalgic gem piece from the old days, full of happy memories...
Eureka! I've Found It.......2004-06-18
I bought the vinyl (twice) and had it pinched at parties (twice). I bought the tape (new technology then!) and well, you know what happens to tapes. When I went online, I scoured the internet for it. No luck. I even bought the sheet music just to prove to myself that I hadn't actually dreamed it.
I was just about to get a different vinyl album changed to CD for a considerable charge and I thought.....why not.......give it one more go on the internet. I looked for that album and Open Road and couldn't believe my eyes...
I can only echo what everyone else has said - you've not had the full experience of Donovan till you've heard this one. As much as I like his other, better known work, there was an extra magic here that infiltrates your mind and memory. Be warned! I hadn't heard the songs for 25 years but I could still sing them to myself so these are the type of songs you'll sing in the shower and hum in the supermarket.
quite a pleasant departure.......2004-05-25
By 1970 the music world was changing. Just a year or two earlier music was being tye-dyed in peace, love and flowers. Psychedelia ruled the world. Donovan was the prince of psychedelic music, releasing numerous albums and enjoying top chart success. With Open Road he made a radical change in the sound of his music. But you need not worry, this album is pure delight, from start to finish. You won't hear sitars or finger cymbals on this album, but instead a pretty powerful band knocking out one pop gem after another. Picking a "favorite song" on this album is pretty much impossible. The only real filler song on the whole album is "Joe Bean's Theme" and maybe "Song for John." Unfortunately, there are no real mega-hits on this album. The rural, under-produced feel of the Open Road album suffers the same radio-neglect fate as Paul McCartney's eponymous first solo album. The lyrical flow of Open Road is quite crafty, especially on "Clara Clairvoyant." The final song on the album, "New Year's Resovolution" with it's "do what you've never done before" mantra could have easily appeared on a 1967 Donovan release. Otherwise, it's all about "changes." And the changes will not get you down with this sturdy 1970 release.
The Great Lost Donovan Album.......2004-03-07
This is the one that got away. Ask anyone about this record and 99.9% will have no idea. In vinyl terms, the second side of this LP is among the best stuff Donovan ever recorded.
Remember, this came out in 1970 and if you listen close you can see a signpost pointing the way to the future of T-Rex. Close your eyes and you can hear it. If Donovan took this band on the road and toured to support this album when it was released he may have had a chance to to re-vamp his career and claim a spot with the great "Glam Rock" artists of that time. The band supporting Donovan was perfect for him. The only thing preventing this review from 5 stars is the annoying habit of overdone falsettos (especially on Roots Of Oak) through-out the record but that does not prevent one from enjoying the truly outstanding songwriting and subtle musicianship. Poke At The Pope is typical Donovan - a cross of folk & jazz phrasing mixed together: Great Stuff! Go out and buy it!!!

Strong Album - Would Give it 10 Stars if I Could.......2005-03-31
Having been a fan of Take That, I was quite interested when Gary Barlow released his solo debut. When I bought this CD, I realized what a musical genius he truly is. This entire CD is wonderful. Gary's voice is like an angel. And the fact that he wrote or co-wrote many of the songs proves that he is not just a former boyband pretty face (although he is that as well). His cover of "So Help me Girl" far outshines the original country version and should have been a #1 hit here in America. The follow up single, "Superhero" was equally impressive and should have been a much bigger hit. Other stand-out tracks include "Hang on in There Baby" and the title track, "Open Road". Since the follow up to this album was never released here in the States, I have not heard it. It is a shame that American radio ignored Gary, because I think he is an amazing talent. I like his former bandmate Robbie Williams as well, but why does Robbie get all the press and Gary is overlooked? If you like beautifully crafted pop songs and have never listened to Gary Barlow, I suggest you buy this CD and give him a try. He is every bit as talented as anyone performing on "American Idol". Let's hope he puts out more CD's and finally catches on here in America.
as beautiful as a sigh.......2005-01-26
In 1996 upon the split up of Take That the world was watching the moves of the man by the name of Gary Barlow. I for one did not anticipate what the follow was going to entail. When I first heard this earth shattering album I wept for I knew that things could never be the same again. Each track on the album has the ability of conjering up different emotions, and by the end, the emotional wirlwind leaves me dizzy. The album's central theme of encountering genuin beauty in our world of technology, yet being unable to shake a certain feeling of unease, comes across perfectly. It's funny that the people who are angered by this album may be the people it was really geared towards. It attempts to send the message that you don't have to be compliant all the time: treasure your individuality, don't let anyone take it away from you. At least that's what I got from this album, which brings the point across beautifully with it's layered sounds and melodic, peircing, and haunting vocals. I'm genuinly moved by this album everytime I listen to it. For those that think I'm saying this just to be hip, and cannnot and do not want anyone to have opinions different than their own, I'm with Gary Barlow saying 'So lets just keep walking down that Open Road'. Not just that but as Garys pet for his entire life fragments of this album kept on propping up to influence a diverse range of artists from the Beatles all the way to Nirvana to Radiohead. One persistent rumour which keeps propping up is that 'Smells like Teen Spirit' was a throwaway. It pretty much sums all you need to know about this album which is the greatest ever in the history of history
So why does the album only get one star. Because I gave my heart to Gary and he broke it 12 months 11 days later.
Fine Adult Contemporary.......2004-01-31
He has more than capable vocals for the music be does. If you like A.C. or romantic and emotionally passionate music, this CD is for you. He has great vocals throughout the entire album. He is a great songwriter as well.
Is Gary Barlow the most TALENTED person ever?.......2003-09-08
Is he? Does he have an attractive face shape? I LIKE his face shape.
is this album actually any good? Do I merely give him 4 stars because I feel sorry for him? NO Its because I like his face shape.
Gary Barlow INTENDS to make a HUGE comeback sometime in the near future. I SIMPLY can't wait!.......for the VIDEO....
mohamed.......2002-05-02

Bluesy/Folksy.......2001-10-17
If you like the blues/folk style of artists like Marc Cohn, you will really enjoy this compilation.
Well..........2001-09-22
Both of the previous reviewers suffer from exageration. This is a good collection of music that is slightly moody without being depressing. It does have a darkness to it that lends itself to calmer, reflective moments. Serious music aficionados of smart lyrics already know Thompson, Bloom, Hait, et al. This fine music works together nicely. That said, full price seems like too much to pay for a collection that you should already own 50 percent of on other discs. For the rambling liner notes that are completely dispensible and add nothing to the package I ding it an extra star. Lyrics would have been infinetly preferable. None of the artists is truely obscure and none of the songs is a hard to find version.
I'm curious to see if this pre-made-mix product catches on as a genre. This seems to be the next step beyond collections of 'summer music' or '60's tunes' that have been out for a while. Many of us have culled favorte collections of songs by various artists that are the soundtrack for our lives at one point or another, and this could have been one of mine. Still,I prefer mine to have personally crafted.
Open All Night - On the Road.......2001-09-10
What a collection of boredom! I listened to this a couple times and have to admit i just don't get it. Some very fine artists but what's the point of this ? I could have asked any number of friends to make a compilation from their own cd closet and traded from mine and any one of them would have been at least as interesting. i can't believe i paid regular price for something i could have done myself. That's what i get for reading a review/rating done by the cd's producer.
Late night music for the open highway........2001-06-21
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the co-producer of this album, as well as the liner note writer, so I suppose I am a little biased when it comes to any of the three discs in the Open All Night series. This set of tunes was designed to be a soundtrack to the mystery and joy of being between what you left and the territory ahead, to the freedom of knowing your only task is to cover some distance, and to the heightened sense of experience when you're on the road.
It's intended, as are all the Open All Night series, to be listened to at night... the later the better. Unlike the other two volumes, this one concentrates on the Americana-inflected sound, although there are contributions from Brits Richard Thompson and Graham Parker, as well as from one of my fave Irish singers, Luka Bloom.
You may not have heard of all of the artists (in fact, it's almost certain you haven't!), or be familiar with all the songs, but the overriding theme in the Open All Night series is the vibe. These songs all hang together, and many many hours of careful consideration were put into the selection and sequencing of the disc to take you on a journey of your own.
In my secret heart of hearts, I hope it turns you on to the artists you haven't heard before, because there are some amazing writers and performers on this album. It has been my privilege to have worked with (or for) more than half of them during my time in the music business.
In some ways, this is the sort of a mix tape I might well make for a friend who heard Alejandro or Little Village over at my house one night and wanted to go a little deeper. At some level, all of the Open All Night albums are. I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did putting them together.

Good Ol' Traditional Bluegrass!!.......2005-06-29
I first saw these guys playing live on the Cumberland Highlanders Show!! I was really taken by their demeanor, not to mention their outstanding musicianship!! These are "just regular guys"(Bradford is a farmer, and Caleb wears what appear to be horned rim glasses) having fun playing bluegrass, and that's how they sound!! I am a bluegrass musician, and, until hearing them do "Bald Knob Arkansas", I never heard anyone other than the Louvin Brothers, or myself perform that song!! A real "Chestnut"!! Another awesomely strange tune is "Mandy Jane", even though it's about a father losing his daughter, it will have you dancing or at least tapping your toe with its infectiously intense drive and groove!! I respect the fact that Open Road keeps within the traditional music style(and dress), while still able to write some great originals, all somewhat paying homage to their forefathers! I am hard to please when it comes to new "bluegrass" bands, especially after hearing all the "wannabee" bandwagon jumpers, after the "Oh Brother Where art Thou" craze!! These guys aren't jumpers, they are "The Wagon"!! Their music will have you jumpin'!!! If you like this cd, check out The Vern Williams Band!! It will also cure your need for a "Real" bluegrass "fix"!!! Yee-Haw!!!
Classic twang.......2005-02-04
"In The Life" is a pre-modern authentic bluegrass sound that will have traditionalists raving. I must admit I am tired of the blue jeans and vest, "third time out of the closet" acts. They dress how bluegrass musicians are supposed to dress. If you want more than an over produced slick sound check these guys named "Open Road" out.
The instrumentals on this album are top notch and innovative. The vocals of the lead singers, especially Brandford Lee Folk is a throw back and still equally unique for his profession and genre. I love the high lonesome twang! The music is driving and powerful, with plenty of breaks to show off the impressive vocals and tight harmonies.
This entire album is great. I feel the best stuff showcases the powerful nasal twang of the lead singing, especially on "One is a lonely number," yikes that is the sound I have been waiting for. Another dynamic and sad song is the hard driving "Mandy Jane" about a father who loses his young daughter. I love these guys. I admire how they pay homage to the history of their music and really display how professional and authentic their sound is. This is amazing, classic, and unique hard bluegrass twang for the traditional bluegrass fan!
great old time sound........2004-10-19
Wow. These guys really have the old style down. Yet they don't continue to do the same old worn out songs that is the tradition with so many good bluegrass bands. This band has real drive and great harmonies. Be warned this is not for the faint of heart. This isn't your fake grass like Allison kraus or any of her contemporaries. This band has the high lonesome sound. If I had to own one bluegrass album this is it.
Original Traditional Bluegrass.......2004-06-23
"...In The Life" is Open Road's 3rd Album, and like previous releases, it includes almost 50% new material. Also, new for this album are the bass player, fiddler, and banjo picker. Not to worry, however, instrumentals like "Suwannee River Hoedown", "Grey Eagle", and "Cheyenne Mountain Breakdown" will remove any doubts as to the qualifications of the new players. They fit right in with the traditional style that Folk & Roberts are re-popularizing.
The original tracks on the album are very good. "Sinkin' Man" is a story about a gambler with a surprise ending. "Southern Track" is an upbeat song about a 21-year-old kid leaving his small town country home. This song not only showcases Bradford Folk's outstanding tenor voice, but also his skill in using the traditional images of bluegrass music and country life. Like "Sinkin' Man", this is a very well thought out, thoughtful song.
If you are a "real" bluegrass fan, this is REAL bluegrass. Open Road contains the same instruments in their band as Del McCoury (guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass, mandolin) and play around 1 mic just like Del does. If I was to compare Open Road to any well-known bluegrass act, it could only be Del McCoury, and that in itself is quite a compliment.

About the Artists
"We live the music we sing about," says Brad Folk, lead singer and songwriter for Open Road. The well-dressed performers of hard-edged, gritty bluegrass music have been touring across North America steadily for more than two years, since the group's first Rounder release, 2002's Cold Wind, created a buzz among traditional music lovers, festival audiences of all ages, and young fans of authentic music performances. Last year's successful ...in the life appeared on the Billboard bluegrass charts and received radio play and critical praise across the roots music world.
In the title cut on Lucky Drive, the band's third release on Rounder, Brad addresses the American ideals of happiness and wealth from an outsider's view, inspired by the band's trips to Los Angeles in the past year. And Brad's "Wanderin' Blues" ponders the heart of a traveler who longs for a conventional home, wrestling with his own restless nature.
No Depression has recognized Brad's "uncanny knack for crafting timeless tunes on timeless subjects." Brad's songs go straight to the soul of listeners, and the band's original instrumentals thrill audiences with an ancient fire.
In addition to originals, Open Road finds little-known bluegrass gems and brings them to the light for today's listeners. "Our knowledge of these songs comes from many late nights in the barn spinning old records because we love 'em," says Brad. "Some songs stick out for us to borrow, but thousands go untouched."
The band took some time off at the end of 2004 to record in Denver, working again with producer Sally Van Meter. "Because a lot of these songs were fairly new to us, and we hadn't been performing them night after night, the CD has a spontaneous feel to it," says mandolinist Caleb Roberts, a South Carolinian who founded Open Road with Brad, originally from Missouri, in 1999.
Open Road was honored to have one of the band's living heroes, Vern Williams, sing with Brad on "I'm Lonesome," a track on Lucky Drive that the band learned from a Larry and Happy Smith recording on the Blueridge label.
Open Road plays bluegrass with a gritty soul that communicates an authentic, real-life emotion that touches audiences. This has a lot to do with Brad's unusual, raw, vocal twang and his stage presence. Some people can't tell if this unpolished approach to bluegrass is for real. Those who grew up with bluegrass and those who have never heard it before sometimes react with equal fascination to Brad's voice. The Missoulian described it this way: "If bluegrass is all about that high-lonesome sound, this guy's camping solo atop Everest. But give him two or three songs, and you may just become convinced that everybody should sing this way.
"There is something oddly quite warm and affecting about his voice, something that makes you know he'd be a fascinating guy to sit around a campfire with, swapping stories. That unpretentious charm pervades the music of Open Road, from the tasty underpinnings provided by bassist Eric Thorin, to the lazy virtuosity of mandolinist Caleb Roberts."
For the past two Rounder projects, Brad and Caleb have been working with bassist Eric Thorin and banjo player Keith Reed, both talented and versatile musicians who share Brad and Caleb's passion for using traditional bluegrass as a language for innovation. Eric, a Colorado native, is a sought-after musician for session work and as a sideman for everything from salsa and jazz to rock and Americana. Keith has a degree from South Plains College, known for its bluegrass program, and a classical music degree. He teaches banjo and classical guitar at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
The five-piece acoustic band from Colorado, named after a style of Stetson hat, performs bluegrass around one microphone; banjo, mandolin and fiddle dance around to play leads, similar to how bluegrass musicians performed decades ago, when country music included its acoustic cousin, bluegrass, sometimes called "hillbilly" music.
Open Road has proved that bluegrass bands don't need to change the language to ignite the excitement of young audiences; neither do they have to feel restrained in order to please the so-called purists. A tide is turning in American music as more young people recognize a hunger for pure music like Open Road's, and older audiences are pleased to see someone carrying on traditional music with reverence, excitement, and originality.
"I think the hard-edged traditional side of this music is to my ears the most exciting and the most thrilling and the most moving," Brad says. Caleb agrees: "There's a lot of power, a lot of feeling in that music that's really inspiring to me, and it's my favorite kind of music."
Customer Reviews:
Good Music But Mostly Cover Tunes.......2006-01-22
I bought this record after hearing it's fine title track on the radio. I was impressed how the band combined traditional bluegrass music with lyrics that addressed a contemporary situation - the band's visit to a wealthy part of Los Angelos. Excellent song! I had even higher expections after reading Kitsy Kuykendall's liner notes which pretty much declared these guys to be the future of bluegrass.
To some degree my expectations were confirmed, I especially enjoyed Caleb Robert's mandolin playing. But I was disappointed that only two songs were originals - "Lucky Drive" and "Wanderin' Blues". These songs show vocalist and guitarist Bradford Lee Folk to be a talented songwriter. So why he chose to write only these two numbers I have no idea. On the plus side, the band does have good taste in covers, including many relatively obscure tunes which were fresh to my ear. Perhaps once the band begins to write more original songs they can vault themselves into 5 star territory. Still worth listening to though.
Mighty powerful bluegrass medicine.......2005-08-04
Playing Time- 38:56 -- The folks at Rounder Records have a knack for finding bluegrass bands that can, as Kitsy Kuykendall's liner notes say, "cook up a sound for today that is new but old at the same time." That's why they signed Open Road in 2002, after hearing their first album produced in 2000 by Sally Van Meter. Meeting in the mid-1990s at jam sessions in Fort Collins, Co., the members of Open Road decided to form a "young traditionalist" band in 1998 and set their sights on preserving a bluegrass sound of yesteryear. These purveyors of the traditional style of bluegrass know how to offer just the right type and amount of musical interaction to emphasize an inspired and spirited bluegrass sound that could be five decades distant.
Some of their covered songs from the likes of Charlie Monroe, Buck Graves/Jake Lambert, Bill Grant/Delia Bell, and Kitty Wells can be traced back to a classic era in the bluegrass and country genres. However, on this CD, their third on Rounder, Open Road isn't shy either about including some new originals, such as guitarist Bradford Lee Folk's title track and "Wanderin' Blues." Did you know that Folk is a "real" cowboy? Banjo-player Keith Reed penned the high-stepping instrumental "Shotgun," a little ditty that incorporates plenty of string bends and even some Scruggs tuner action. Original Open Road banjo-player Jim Rummels has apparently moved on to other endeavors.
The rest of the band includes Caleb Roberts (mandolin), Eric Thorin (bass), and Paul Lee (fiddle). All five band members sing, although lead vocals are predominantly sung by Folk whose vocalizing has a rustic purity at the heart of bluegrass. Roberts doesn't have the best of singing voices, but his rendition of "After Dark" is delivered with earnest effort. Vern Williams makes a cameo appearance, singing with Folk on "I'm Lonesome," a song learned from a Larry and Happy Smith recording. And what would a set like this be with a novelty tune like "Tater Patch" with its cute hook...or an upbeat traditional fiddle tune like "Little Rabbit."
Dressing the part, these showmen also understand the need to entertain. Besides their suits, the guys wear Stetson hats, perhaps some are even of the "open road" style. Produced by Sally Van Meter, "Lucky Drive" has a spontaneous feel to it because many of the songs had not been overplayed and their thrills worn down by the band before they set out to record them.
Folk claims to "live the music we sing about," and this fact may allow them to deliver the gritty goods with plenty of personality and credibility. This album is one for all who enjoy a visceral brand of bluegrass. Open Road strives for music that is both explosive and emotional, and they successfully impart a traditional stamp on a mix of classic and contemporary material. It makes for mighty powerful bluegrass medicine. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
