Tango in the Night

Thanks to the long shadow cast by the group's blockbuster Rumours, this 1987 effort was inevitably regarded as something of a letdown. That's too bad, since it's an underrated set that contains plenty of inventively catchy tunes, with a quirky sonic edge that gives the songs added sonic and emotional depth. Lindsey Buckingham's eccentric, vaguely menacing "Big Love" is a standout, as is Christine McVie's brightly bittersweet "Little Lies," along with such dark-horse winners as "Seven Wonders," "Caroline," "Mystified," and Stevie Nicks's typically mystical "Welcome to the Room ... Sara." --Scott Schinder

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fleetwood Mac does 80s pop as well as they do anything else.......2007-01-18

Some of the purists who base Fleetwood Mac's brilliance on their mid/late 70s output do not like this album, but for me, someone who grew up in the 80s & 90s, this hit-heavy album is impossible not to like. Filled with catchy, well-produced songs that stay with the time without causing the members of the group to sound like shells of their former selves. "Everywhere", "Little Lies", "Seven Wonders" and "Big Love" were all justifiably huge hits, and the non-hit "Family Man" is very sonically similar and just as good.

4 out of 5 stars Buckingham's swan song to the group (for awhile, anyway).......2006-10-25

This is the Mac's fifth and (so far) last studio effort with all five of the band's most popular members, and it was the last time that Lindsey Buckingham would record in the studio with the band for 16 years. The album was a considerable success, peaking at lucky #7 on the Hot 200, selling two-million copies in the US, and spawning four hit singles. Overall, quite an impressive showing for an aging supergroup well into it's second decade of performing together. While it certainly does not rank among the classic Mac albums from the Buckingham/Nicks era of the band, it does remains a excellent recording that sent the most popular lineup of the band out on a high note.

As with TUSK and MIRAGE, TANGO IN THE NIGHT is primarily a showcase for Lindsey Buckingham's talents as a producer and arranger. He consistently provides an arresting performance as a producer, and manages to flesh out and strengthen the songs of Mac's other two principal writers. Buckingham is also a top-notch singer and songwriter in his own right as well. The material he contributes to TANGO IN THE NIGHT is all first rate, and he's in great shape vocally. The primal cries of "Caroline," the clipped rhythm of "Family Man" (#83 Pop), and the sexy smash hit "Big Love" (#5 Pop, #23 Adult Contemporary, #2 Mainstream Rock, #7 Dance) all sit comfortable with his best work, and his bizarre title track is really the only truly TUSK-esque cutting edge track present on this album.

The always endearing Christine McVie continues her irresistible blend of pop and blue-eyed soul, and contributes two big hits with "Little Lies" (#4 Pop, #1 Adult Contemporary, #14 Mainstream Rock) and "Everywhere" (#14 Pop, #1 Adult Contemporary, #22 Mainstream Rock). The delirious smash "Little Lies" was the biggest hit off the album, and it remains a 24-karat classic of eighties pop. Though the arrangement relies heavily on synthesizers and other late-eighties production gimmicks, the song actually sounds more pleasantly nostalgic than hopelessly dated. "Little Lies" also has one of the most instantly memorable choruses that McVie ever penned, and the harmony vocals make effective use of all three of the band's vocalists. Similarly, the heavy synths never become intrusive on McVie's "Everywhere," which also remains a true slice of pop perfection - even though the gurgled voices at the end was probably one step too far.

However, the absolute best material of the disc comes in the form of the three Buckingham-Christine McVie collaborations. The super-sensual "Mystified" has an irresistible aura of jazzy coolness that brings out the sophisticated elegance of McVie's distinctive alto singing voice. Conversely, the pulsating up-tempo stunner "Isn't It Midnight" (#14 Mainstream Rock) gives McVie one of her few chances to really rock out, while Lindsey's haunting background vocals provide a memorable counterpoint to McVie's uncharacteristically impassioned performance. The concluding, almost neo-samba "You And I, Pt. 2" is great fun, with Lindsey giving an unusually jubilant lead vocal. There's just something about these three Buckingham/McVie collaborations that merge the best qualities of both artists. Christine's sophisticated pop song-craft balances out Lindsey's odd extremities, while Lindsey avant garde inventiveness minimalizes Christine's occasional blandness. I'd really love to hear these two do a whole album together.

Unfortunately, not everything even comes close to working as well. The only real downside to TANGO IN THE NIGHT is the surprisingly poor quality of Stevie Nicks' material. The derivative "Welcome To The Room. . . Sara" is probably her best offering here, even though it's basically a rehash of her own superior 1981 composition "Blue Lamp" (included on the HEAVY METAL soundtrack album). Still, "Welcome to the Room" is at least listenable. Stevie contributed "additional lyrics" to the Sandy Stewart-penned hit "Seven Wonders" (#19 Pop, #13 Adult Contemporary, #2 Mainstream Rock), which finds Nicks pandering too much to the pop audience in order to snag a hit. Worst of all is the embarrassingly undistinguished "When I See You Again," which finds her in the worst voice of her entire career. There is something uncomfortably disturbing about listening to Stevie's tattered vocals on this cut. It's like hearing a singer completely fall apart right before your very ears. Thank God Lindsey took over the vocals at the end of the song before the track became too unbearable to listen to.

In the end, TANGO IN THE NIGHT is a great album with top notch material and performances from Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie. Unfortunately, the poor quality of Stevie Nicks' solo contributions keeps it from reaching it full potential. With some decent material from Nicks, would TANGO IN THE NIGHT have become the eighties pop equivalent to 1977's RUMOURS or 1979's TUSK? Maybe, but, as it stands, TANGO IN THE NIGHT is still a great record and a must-own for Mac fans.

Placido Domingo is a phenomenon, and every aspect of his artistry is on display in this 2-CD compilation, which includes arias from his signature roles in Italian, French, German, and Russian operas, and songs from Viennese and Spanish operettas. The original recordings range from the early 1970s to the present and show that though over the years his bright golden voice has taken on a darker, more burnished glow, it has retained the melting lyricism, the heroic ring, the thrilling top notes, and the focused intensity that make it instantly recognizable. (Comparing the Verdi arias included here with their counterparts of later vintage in the all-Verdi set The Tenor Arias bears this out.) The program demonstrates his stylistic and expressive versatility and his ability to instantly establish character and mood, from Lenski's sorrow (in Eugene Onegin), Cavaradossi's heart-rending despair (in Tosca), Otello's shattering agony, to Tristan's passion, Siegfried's exuberance, Faust's ardor (first in French by Gounod, then in Italian by Boito). In three Mozart arias, Domingo spins endless, perfectly shaped phrases with incredible breath control, then adds an oddity: the famous duet between Zerlina and Don Giovanni, a role he has not performed. Five Viennese operetta songs, one of which he also conducts, are delightful; there is a smile of pleasure in his voice, but not a hint of kitsch. By contrast, Tchaikovsky's "None but the Lonely Heart" is spoiled by an orchestration that is pure Hollywood. In the final Spanish group, he is on home ground and incomparable. This is a glorious record, a must for all lovers of great singing. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the art of Placido Domingo.......2007-07-04

Placido Domingo, of course, is one of the finest tenors of the latter part of the 20th century. This 2 CD set well captures his talent, showing the range of his singing. We hear cuts from Puccini and Verdi to Tchaikovsky and Wagner to Strauss and Handel. And even a traditional Spanish sung and some operetta thrown in for good measure!

This is a wonderful introduction to his artistry, and shows that he can sing well across a variety of styles and eras. Let's sample some cuts:

"Il mio Tesoro" (from Mozart's Don Giovanni) is a difficult aria to sing well. And Domingo is up to the challenge. He displays a smooth and rich voice. His is one of those distinctive tenor voices, like Tucker's or Pavarotti's, that is quickly recognizable. This is, as noted, a challenging piece and Domingo handles it well, showing off considerable vocal agility in the process.

From the same opera, "La ci darem la mano," a sweet duet with, in this instance, soprano Susan Graham. This seductive work is sung well by both parties and is a ravishing version.

From Puccini's "Tosca," "Recondita armonia." At the close, his voice rises above orchestra and chorus. Overall, well and richly sung.

And now for something very different. . . The "Forging Scene" from Siegfried. One may not think of Domingo as a heldentenor, but he does a serviceable job here. His voice sometimes appears a bit light, but, overall, he does estimable work. He catches Siegfried's spirit as he forges the shattered remains of his father's sword, "Nothung." When he sings the name of his sword at the close, with the leitmotif ringing out from the orchestra, it is an affecting moment.

Then, "Celeste Aida" (from Verdi's opera). A stentorian voice well deployed to meet the challenges of this wonderful aria. Some tenors scoop as they move from those lower to the higher notes; Domingo's voice is well controlled here. The final high note is well hit.

Strauss (Junior's) "Ach, wie so herrlich zu schau'n" is a romp! A fun piece and well sung by Domingo. He demonstrates, as before, excellent vocal agility.

Lehar's "O Vaterland" is also fun. It is a sprightly tune sprightly sung.

Finally, he ends the second CD with a traditional Spanish tune--"La Golondrina." He does not overpower this work with operatic technique. He sings it well and affectingly.

So, all in all, if one wants a good introduction to Placido Domingo's vocal oeuvre, this is a very strong starting point.

5 out of 5 stars This is really the best........2007-05-16

I have many of Mr. Domingo's recordings but I really love this one. He seems to get better with age. Some of the songs are on some of my other recordings but they seem new and fresh on this CD. I really think this is the best of Placido Domingo.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Placido at all, you must have this CD........2005-04-06

Placido Domingo has been around for so long, it is easy to take this great artist for granted. I totally agree with the previous reviews of this album; I can also say that I had the opportunity to hear him live in concert on April 2, 2005 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and his voice is still stunning. His opening aria that night was the prayer from El Cid, "O Souverain," which he dedicated to the memory of Pope John Paul II. This piece is the 8th selection on CD 1, and is from a 1997 live recording. His thrilling finish blew me away when I listened to it the first time, and and the crowd on the recording reacts the same way the Mississippi audience did when we heard him. That aria alone is worth the price of this CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Rare And Great Domingo Classics.......2005-03-08

EMI's "The Very Best Of" series is a wonderful way for the opera lover/novice or even connoisseur in training to get acquainted with the great singers of opera in the 20th century. It is possible that in a few years, the great singers of today (from the 90's up to now and further into the future) will grace the album covers of The Very Best Of...The Very Best Of Renee Fleming, The Very Best Of Salvatore Licitra, etc. This is not exactly the best of Domingo. It is more of a collection of rare and wonderfully expressive arias from operas that range all over the map- Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Gounod, Massenet. Now, here's the reason why so many people adore Domingo, myself included - Domingo is a Renaissance Opera Tenor. He has sung almost every tenor role in the opera universe. Even if he is, to some, the "tenor who sang with Pavoratti in the three tenors" he proves he's the strongest of the bunch, the most dedicated, the most prolific and most artistic. Domingo has a beautiful voice, with secure high register and dark, masculine middle chest voice and exciting dramatic electricity! He's sung more than 50 operas, in addition operetta and Spanish Zarzuela (the Spanish equivalent to musicals or operetta which is where he got started and his parents sung in Zarzuela) and he has also recorded Spanish mainstream love songs for Latin audiences. A winner of Grammies, an actor in movies about operas that he starred in (Tosca, La Traviata, Otello) and the most active tenor on tv broadcasts, he is just incredible and powerful.
He is a great force in opera.

Even in his old age, he does'nt seem to be slowing down or call it quits. Recent performances (2000-2005) include Eugene Onegin, the lead in Queen of Spades, Rasputin in Debra Dratell's Nicolas and Alexandra, Idomeneo and his next role Parsifal. He is the singular tenor who mastered every repertoire- Mozart (Don Ottavio, Tamino...unfortunately Domingo as Don Giovanni is a miscast because he is too noble and romantic and GOOD to be a bad guy)..to Puccini heros (Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Dick Johnson in Fanciualla Del West, Rodolfo in Boheme, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Calaf in Turandot) Verdi heroes (Radames in Aida, Don Carlos, Stiffelio, etc) to the French repertoire...Gounod (Faust, Romeo) Meyerbeer heroes, Massenet hero (Des Grieux, Le Cid) and Saint Saens (Samson) the list goes on and on. When this man dies, an era will die with him. His legend will live on because he will leave behind dozens of albums, movies and memories......

5 out of 5 stars A real Bobby Dazzler.......2004-02-19

Fans of Mr. Domingo would be lucky to find a selection of music that more profoundly explores and exhibits the diversity of his vocal ability and interpretation than is offered on these two discs. Delicious displays of Mozart, ringing renditions of the most challenging high Italian roles, powerfully rounded accounts of some of the heavy German/Russian repetoir, and some noticably nostalgic songs from the light Spannish tradition provide an impressive catalogue of the great man's rich, focussed, technically impecable and singularly beguiling vocal talent. Those who are yet to form an opinion on any particular genre of the operatic spectrum would do well to start here, so eclectic is this album. Also, you might be reassured to know that, should you become an admirer of P.D.'s talent as a result of listening to this compilation, (it is difficult to resist), you will have no trouble finding other recordings by him. A record-breaker with more than 110 roles to his repetoir (40 is a respected total for an opera singer), he is the most recorded tenor in history, leaving more than 80 complete accounts to date of operas in the Italian, French, German and Russian traditions.

5 out of 5 stars JALOUSIE/ STAR DUST- Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops.......2007-02-22

If you're a classical music lover, you can't go wrong with this great combination of two nostalgic gems, originally recorded on Lp format by Arthur Fiedler, conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
"Jalousie" was definitely one of Fiedler's finest works. The album theme "Jalousie" or "Jealousie" based on a tango composed by Gade, is a work of art. I first heard Fiedler's version of this great music master piece watching the old "B.F.Goodrich" musical program on television back during the early 60's and I immediately realized Fiedler's Boston Pops version of this great classic was absolutely the very best I have ever heard. This great album is complemented by other gorgeous classics, like "Il Guarany", "Jamaican Rhumba" "Danze Piemontese" and others. The second album included on this CD "Stardust" is another recorded milestone by Fiedler, "Stardust", "Clair de Lune" and other beautiful classics will simply delight you. Maestro Arthur Fiedler will always be remembered by music fans as Mr.Boston Pops. Fortunately a portion of his musical works with the Pops have been re-issued for us to enjoy and reminisce. I very highly recommend it. Do not miss this one.

Trio Voronezh is made up of three Russian musicians who play bayan (accordion), domra (similar to a mandolin), and double bass balalaika. The trio has been a hit at the Oregon Bach Festival and over NPR; this is its debut disc. It's obviously aimed at the crossover market, with light fare including a Vivaldi movement and a Gershwin medley. But this ensemble's musicianship and originality qualify them for a more serious audience, too. Their Piazzolla is as tangy as anybody's, and the way they toss off Schnittke's parodistic Gogol Suite could crack up a musicologist. Turning Schubert's best-known Moment musical into a folk dance may not convince everyone, but they do the same with a Tchaikovsky Russian dance that's extremely persuasive. Too bad Angel hasn't identified the music on the disc properly, or given us more than 42 minutes of music on one CD. But what is here is so much fun that Trio Voronezh deserves a wide recommendation, especially to classical-music lovers who are relaxed enough to enjoy Quartetto Gelato or the Cambridge Buskers. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars High Five!.......2004-11-11

One of the best Modern Tango albums I've listened to in a long time. With the Direction of Rudolf Werthen bringing intense emotion and full scale rhythm to this album, you are sure to be pleased. A true legacy album to Rudolf's enduring career.

Not recommended for a cheap and cheesy stereo system. Be certain that your stereo can play SACD/Hybrid CDs.

    5 out of 5 stars Hey, it's not Stravinsky... it's Piazzolla..........2002-05-29

Dumb review giving it one star because you bought an apple thinking you were buying a carrot...

1 out of 5 stars TANGO (THE ELEGY FOR THOSE WHO ARE NO LONGER HERE).......2002-05-02

The pitfalls of ordering a SACD without due dilegence was demonstrated by my purchase of this SACD. I love tango music and Buenos Aires. This SACD is tango in the atonal mode. Some may like it but it is not classical tango. If Stravinsky were alive today this would be his tango music. Caveat Emptor! Listen to a portion of this SACD before you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Real fun music.......2004-03-03

I found this item while looking up items about Peter (PDQ Bach) Schickele, whose instrument is the Bassoon. The selection of items reflect the current no so serious status of the unusual sound of this instrument.

5 out of 5 stars The Bassoon Brothers- Bassoon Ambassadors to the World!.......2003-12-16

Wanted- The Bassoon Brothers is hands down our entire family's favorite CD. (Our second favorite is Captured- The Bassoon Brothers.) After hearing this CD we are all bassoon enthusiasts and Bassoon Bros. devoted fans. My 11 year old, inspired by the Bassoon Brothers, is now a bassoonist with a youth symphony orchestra. The Bassoon Brothers' level of skill and musicianship is the highest, their selections are witty, their arrangements are wonderful, and the CD is a gem! The "Brothers" raise up their bassoons celebrating the instrument's solo and small ensemble capabilities, demonstrating its elegant, eloquent, and expressive voice. Great listening! Great entertainment!

        5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-01-14

I played bassoon for 11 or so years. I wish I'd had an album such as this one back then; I might have kept up with it. The Bassoon Brothers are quite talented, as their recording shows, and the arrangements imaginitive and often amusing. They take a few liberties with some well-known pieces, so if you're a die-hard classical purist, this album may not be for you.

If you're a bassoonist yourself, and you're looking for a fresh sound for our instrument, I heartily recommend this album. I enjoyed it immensely. Who knew bassoons could be so cool?

5 out of 5 stars Not for stiffs!.......2001-10-25

The bassoon is usually thought of as only slightly less comical than the trombone and enjoyed mostly by those infinitely more anally retentive. Its unique sound has no pretenders. So, I love both it and this CD. In fact, I ended up with two copies, so I offered the other, gratis, to the bassoon professor at a local, very famous music college here in Tokyo. He required that I submit a written list of pieces on it, which he would then evaluate and make a decision as to whether it would merit his acceptance. Uh huh. A new twist on THAT retentive. Anyway, "Wanted" is funny, it often swings, it's sometimes gets a bit outside, it occasionally gets down with some stink on it, and it's thoroughly creative.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favourite, but..........2001-10-12

I like bassoon quartets and have a tendency to buy all bassoon quartet records I see. Luckily for my wallet I don't see that many. The Bassoon Brothers CD is not my favourite bassoon quartet recording, in fact it's my least favourite but despite that it's not that bad and some of the tracks are actually quite good.

So, what's bad? Some of the songs are played too "rough". I'm especially thinking of Gounod's Funeral March and Anderson's Buglers Holiday, which I've heard done wonderfully elsewhere. Bugler's Holiday is almost downight bad. I generally think they could have gained from a bit more polished playing style.

But some tracks are well played: Alexanders Ragtime Band has a nice thing going and Dubois' Scherzo as well. And I like the Dragoons from Carmen...

Conclusion: I won't recommend this to a person who's never heard a bassoon quartet. I'll play them United Sounds of Bassoon or the Caliban Quartet instead to get them hooked. But this CD can be worth its money too. So I give it three stars out of five.
