THE BAND: Jimi Hendrix (guitars & vocals), Noel Redding (bass), Mitch Mitchell (drums & percussion). Additional musicians on select tracks include Dave Mason (guitar), Al Kooper (keyboards), and Billy Cox (bass).

THE DISC: (1993) 20 tracks clocking in a just under 72 minutes. Included with the disc is a 24-page booklet containing a rich history of Hendrix, many pictures, song titles & credits, and what songs came from which albums. Tracks 1-18 are studio recordings; the last 2 tracks ("Star Spangled Banner" and "Wild Thing") are live. Digitally remastered sound. Label - MCA Records.

COMMENTS: Short, sweet, and right to the point - this is the best single disc collection of Hendrix tunes out there. I was a product of the 70's and 80's music growing up... and I felt like I missed the Jimi Hendrix boat. I knew several of his hits from the radio, but still did not own anything of his. Decades later, "The Ultimate Experience" opened my eyes to man and it inspired me afterward to get 3 of his 4 studio albums ("Electric Ladyland", "Axis: Bold As Love" and "Are You Experienced"). This album put all those great songs in one place! Sadly, Hendrix ONLY released 4 studio albums (1966-1970)... and countless "Live" albums and bootlegs after his death. If you're new to Hendrix, or you want a great collection on one disc - try this (5-stars).

Jimi Hendrix, on the outside lookin in, livin on through guitar soundwaves! Growing up I have never had much of any musical influence, especially not from anything so "out there" like Jimi Hendrix. I highly recommend this album to someone just turning on to Hendrix or even someone whos been listening to him for years. Awesome album.

In my mind, the only place the Hendrix comp entitled "Experience Hendrix" really choked was in its lack of selections from my favorite Hendrix LP, Electric Ladyland. But this makes up for it. While the aforementioned compilation only offered three songs from that LP, The Ultimate Experience gives us six, probably the six best not counting the longer tracks Voodoo Chile (the bluesy take, that is) and 1983. And the rest of the album works too, giving us mandatory selections such as Purple Haze, Wind Cries Mary, Hey Joe, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Red House, Angel and Star Spangled Banner. Though there are a handfull of songs I like that didn't make it (If 6 Was 9, Bold As Love, 3rd Stone From the Sun), this comes pretty close to being the ideal Hendrix compilation. The only misstep was Wild Thing, but what's here for the most part is essential.

I wouldn`t tell you much about the music itself - it is best collection to start your acquaintance with the music by Jimi Hendrix. I`m also the man of the 80s, so this CD for me was an openinig of the unknown land.
But if you had heard almost all music by Jimi - this CD could be interesting for you too. This remastering by CHOP EM OUT is like restoring of the picture by the old artist. While listening to this CD, you could think: "That is how albums by Jimi must have sounded". On this CD you could hear his playing in detail, and you starting to see his songs as impressionistic work by the artist.
Sound on remastered classic albums by Jimi is much worse. By the way this CD is one the best remasters which I ever heard.

JIMI HENDRIX-THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE: There are literally dozens of discs out there that chronicle the pyrotechnic (in more ways than one) career of Jimi Hendrix, but THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE lives up to its title. Twenty terrific tracks touch upon all the important bases, including FM cornerstones (FOXY LADY, PURPLE HAZE), hopped up blues (the riveting RED HOUSE, plus VOODOO CHILE, which HENDRIX disciple STEVIE RAVE ON later tackled), his only Top 40 hit (ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER, only one of the most innovative Dylan remakes ever), psychedelia (CASTLES MADE OF SAND), and classic concert covers (STAR SPANGLED BANNER and WILD THING, barely recognizable via Hendrix' twisted visions). This is one of the best single CD history lessons imaginable, from the man who shook, rattled, and rolled rock music to its very core; the aftershocks are still being felt over three decades later. Not all the scenarios/tracks are so appealing to me, but the ones that *are* really, REALLY are. Not for minors, obviously; very explicit language and sexual content. A fairly wide variety of scenarios in here, so if you're looking for sexy listening material, you're likely to find it here. The last track is a bit shocking in that it's a consensual encounter between a brother and sister, but I only hesitate a little to say that it's one of the hottest on the disc! Highly recommended.

    I bought this CD because I wanted the sound of rain hitting a patio. However, the sound is inconsistent. It starts pretty loudly but about 20 minutes later, both the rain and especially the thunder die off. Also, the sound isn't smooth. It sounds like several separate storms patched together without any transition.

    My main problems, though, are the non-storm noises. I knew from the sampler of this series that there is a little dog barking in the background, but I thought it was quiet enough to ignore. The barking is present, no surprise. What I can't accept is a faint, disjointed SINGING like a ghost trapped in an insane asylum. Listen closely, and you will hear this phenomenon around 5:50, 6:10, and 9:00. I kept telling myself I was imagining things. Then I leaned over the player and there it was right in my ear: this short passage of yelling like some demon-possessed maniac out in the storm. I was freaked out. Do not buy this piece of junk!

    This Thunderstorm CD is my favorite. The rain and thunder is very realistic and at the same time it is relaxing and refreshing. I have it playing all day, especially when it's hot outside.

    I love this CD. It's the best THUNDERSTORM recording I have heard. And the whole Cd is a real wonderful experience. I close my eyes and I can feel the rain on my face and hear the thunder rolling from all over... I am in the middle of the Thunderstorm. It's a great CD! Highly recommended for anyone who loves Nature Sounds and in particular Thunderstorms.

    This CD sounded like water being poured onto a flat rock instead of the sound of raindrops. The rain sound was so irksome that I didn't even notice the thunder. A big waste of money.

    WOW! This is a great album. It is an incredible experience of a most realistic Thunderstorm with great rain sounds. When I close my eyes it is like being in the middle of it.These are pure Nature Sounds. No Music added. Highly recommended.

        It is a great compilation album, with all his best tracks from early and middle of his career. Would recommend that any true Rick Wakeman Fan buy it.

        After enthusiastically ordering this compilation, some Yes songs, plenty of early RW, lots of favourites, some live sets, some songs not heard before. It was some disappointment on first listening realizing all of the above were not the original recordings. This is NOT the Ultimate Experience!!!

        While the musicianship is passable, with some stellar Wakeman solos, the vocals just don't stand up, this is not Jon Anderson or Ashley Holt.

        I contacted Rick Wakemans official web site for more details as to personel and recording dates and was politely told that they had no details of this "Cleopatra" release and that Rick receives no renumeration. It is not quite a bootleg, but definately not sanctioned by or has any input from Rick Wakeman or his management, thus the lack of recording detail and the scant liner notes.

        I will enjoy listening to these 'alternate recordings' for what they are, however it is not what I expected...

        When I bought this triple Wakeman CD, "The Ultimate Rick Wakeman Experience," I thought it would be a "best of" but it's all new recordings of some of his best compositions. Over three hours of new arrangements and interpretations. He does most of King Arthur, several Wives, all of Journey to the Center of the Earth, some choice selections from No Earthly Connection, his biggest Yes contirbutions, throws in some Stones and Beatles, and some newer stuff with an Italian percussionist/vocalist.

        It's amazing stuff, but the packaging is odd. It lists the tracks, but they aren't correct. Some song are on the CD in a different order and some songs aren't even listed that are actually on the CD. For instance, an incredible interpretation of "Elenor Rigby" isn't listed. And nowhere does it list the musicians.

        It's almost like a live album without the cheering crowds. He's playing with a really tight band that includes great drummers, guitarists and quite a few different vocalists. You'll be happy to know that the vocals are SO much better than the original line-up on Journey and Arthur. And this instrumental version of "Paint It Black" is unbelievable. It would be hard, actually, to accurately list the songs because it really is like a live performance. He does medleys and may start one track with Six Wives but then it transforms into an Arthur composition and back again, then on the next disc he goes back to the Wives theme in the middle of Starship Trooper or something. And everything is new arrangements.

        I can't stop listening to it! I like it better every time I hear it. Thank you, Rick!

        Back in the Seventies, my first concert was Rick Wakeman and the English Rock Ensemble. The sound, lights, and musicianship spoiled me, because for the next 10 years or more, every band I saw was a disappointment compared to that excellent show.

        If you are a fan of the best keyboardist around, this really is close to being the "ultimate" Wakeman experience!

        Similarly to another reviewer, this was a bonus disc from the now defunct "Classic CD Magazine". As that publication tended to offer only the best of the best in their CDs accompanying their monthly publication, I listened and still cannot believe these sounds. My experience with jazz goes back to the beats in San Francisco coffee houses; yet not much knowledge of Bristish jazz (some exposure while living in Stockholm, the Sweeds are like, wow, ... there). Who is Geoff Eales, who's on sax? Very highly recommended - note the Peggi Lee sound alike. More!

        I came to acquire this CD quite by accident - it was included as a Second Coverdisc with a popular British Classical Music magazine. I had not been previously introduced to Jazz Music and was tempted right away to use the CD as a decoration in the car. However,on trying the cd once, I got hooked. The lush vocals, the erotic saxophone, the atmospheric splattering of rain sound effects, all make this CD a notable journey, which can serve both as a good unwinder after a hectic day or to kindle romance. You will find no jolting interruptions here - the tracks are sensibly ordered so that they take you on one complete journey, one hypnosing track followed by another. I must admit that it has served me and my wife frequently as an accompaniment to a late night bottle of Chardonnay.

        Another unique release from ism. This mix contains a wide array of different styles that mesh well together. The sounds are deep and layered with a dirty quality sometimes not found in the "electronic" sound. It is refreshing to find a mix that does not fit nicely in a preconcieved genre. The disc is dark and very moody. Some stand out tracks include Vida Blue (beatboxes at dawn), recognize (J. Warrin with Carol C), and the dubbed out How I Feel (Brothers Warrin). Sun Runners has a slower pace compared to 'Triboro Blend' (swingsett), and a different feel than 'Sights Unseen' (Swingsett J. Warrin and Lisa Shaw). But it shares the same dark inspiration. A definite head nodder with layers of dark beats, Quality mixing and thoughtfull track selection. Five stars.
