4 out of 5 stars Very good for America fans.......2007-06-10

It's nice having these lesser known America albums available on CD, my only beef is it doesn't include (I'm sure for time) the Alibi track "Coastline", one of my favorites from the LP which I still fortunately own. Having said that, it is a good package for America fans.

4 out of 5 stars A nice package.......2007-02-17

This is a nice collection of two of America's lesser known albums, 1979's "Silent Letter" and 1980's "Alibi". Neither album was a hit in the US but they are not bad.

"Silent Letter" was America's last collaboration with legendary Beatles producer George Martin. It produced a few minor hits: "Only Game in Town", "All My Life", and "All Around."

While "Alibi" went vertually unnoticed in the US, it was a big hit overseas. "Survival" was a number 1 hit in Europe and it contains one of my favorite America rockers "Valentine".

This is not a bad collection to have if you do not already own the individual CDs.

5 out of 5 stars America cd.......2007-02-12

Great to have both of these albums on one cd,especially since no one seemed to have "Alibi" available since vinyl or cassette.

The Motet quickly became one of the most popular bands in Colorado, and their popularity is now growing nationwide. Basically, you have a lot of talented musicians combined with a unique edge. That being a very powerful percussion base. Although their style seems to change every other month, and with every new release (now 3 studio albums plus this live album), the percussion base and jazz influences are always present. This album also features some singing by their former lead singer, Jans Ingber. Also has some Lara Maykovich (http://www.aphrodesia.org/index.htm) on some of the background vocals. Very high energy band whose sound is difficult to classify.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another great America effort.......2006-01-16

I think this album has some great songs. Valentine is a great rocker song and while it is not a usual America melodic tune, it is still a great song. You could have been the one is a classic. This is a must for America lovers.

3 out of 5 stars gerry great, dewey less so.......2005-02-04

This album is pretty unmemorable. Gerry is excellent as always with the fairly well known and melodic 'survival'. He handles 'don't believe in miracles' nicely. The best are his two songs near the end of the album. 'Coastline' sounds like it is influenced by the beach boys, and is beautiful. My fave song is the gorgeous melodic 'one in a million'. Lovely ballad.

The other covers are just plain boring and I usually skip them.

Dewey's songs tend to rock more here than any other album. 'Might be your love' has a nice verse, but the chorus is repetitive.
'Hangover' is rubbish and tries to rock but is just plain embarrassing. And 'valentine' is just unmelodic and just not America's style.

'Silent Letter' was way way better. This is among America's weaker efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Alibi for those early 80s.......2004-07-03

This album helped me enjoy long days of study during those early '80s, when I started Engineering studies in Neuquen city, Patagonia Argentina. No doubt Alibi did hit my soul with America's own style.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-09-04

A very good album that went unnoticed when it was released. Only their second studio album after Dan Peek left, Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley make up for the loss of Peek by recording several songs they did not write. It works very well. While none of the songs became even minor hits in the US, several songs were hits in other countries like Survival and Right Back To Me. Best songs include Catch That Train, I Do Believe In You, and Valentine (which I think may be America's best rocker). One thing that may have hurt the album was the cover. While it is very colorful, it tends to turn many people off. They also changed their standard America logo.

5 out of 5 stars Her best!.......2002-01-05

This is Bethania's great masterpiece, and the album that made her a superstar. One of her most successful releases -- both aesthetically and commercially. Soft, romantic jazz-pop balladry with tasteful and effectively understated keyboard-and-string arrangements throughout -- it's slick, but in a very good way. This is as good as her torch song style gets, and the album still holds up very well. Features a haunting version of Chico Buarque's "Calice," as well as the transcendently sweet duet with Gal Costa, "Sonho Meu."

Album Description

Wounded Bird Records reissue of 1985 album, their third release and features the intense lead guitar work of Adrian.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Adrian Vandenberg - guitarist extraordinaire.......2006-03-07

Vandenberg's third and final release came out in 1986. This guy belongs in the same class as guitarists like Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore and Micheal Schenker. Metal guitar with classical overtones - he is great.

One of my favorite ballads of all time is "How Long" from this release. Great bass accompaniment with the slow guitar sounds - it amazes me that this was never released as a single as I'm sure it would have been a huge hit.

The other ballad here is "Once In A Lifetime" that is also excellent. I'm sure Adrian Vandenberg probably got a higher paying gig with Whitesnake in the late 1980's, but I wish he had continued to write things like this - I really miss him.

This album is a good listen from start to finish. The all out rockers are "Dressed To Kill", "Fighting Against The World", and the incredible instrumental "Kamikaze". Vandenberg's fret work on "Kamikaze" make this a must-buy along with the ballads.

"Prelude Mortale" is a short instrumental of classical acoustic guitar. Put this one in the same league and Edward Van Halen's "Spanish Fly" from VAN HALEN II.

The rest of this straight ahead hard rock. I had this on cassette back in 1985 and it had not been available on CD's until Wounded Bird Records re-released this 80's gem a few years ago, with Vandenberg's other two albums. Can't tell you how delighted I was to see this again. If you see this at a good price, grab it - you never know when it will be unavailable again.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid record.......2004-04-04

First of all, it's nice to see this great record from 1985 re-issued. The ridiculous import prices made me say "alleluia" when Wounded Bird re-issued it several years ago. (By the way, I purchased it from Wounded Bird for about $10.99 if I recall correctly).

This is Vandenberg's third and final studio disc. The production is pretty clear and the instruments and vocals balance well. The songs retain a strong flavor similar to those on "Heading for a Storm". Standout tracks are the uptempo tracks "Voodoo" and "Fighting Against the World". "All The Way" and "Pedal to the Metal" kick off the disc in a rockin' fashion.

Another highlight is "Prelude Mortale" which leads into "Alibi". "Prelude" is a solo classical piece from Adrian and it's terrific. Apparently, Adrian's mom loves his classical guitar playing, so he always tried to put at least piece on Vandenberg's records. "Alibi" is a truly catchy tune with a hooky chorus.

Overall, I wish Adrian had never left for Whitesnake. As good as Whitesnake's "1987" album was, Adrian only played one solo on one song. All three Vandenberg albums stand up well to this day, so search them out if you like great songs with stellar guitar parts.

4 out of 5 stars The best chill and erotica box set ever!!!.......2005-03-16

I must agree with the previous writer; this CD set contains CDS-200 copy protection which requires you to install a program on your cpu to play highly compressed versions of the songs that sound like garbage! If one pays for the cd, then why can they not copy it to his player of choice? The music industry is totally going about combatting music piracy the wrong way! Maybe they should lower CD prices to compete with piracy, but then they would lose their huge profits. We all know that the musicians see little of that money anyway.

Enough of my ranting... this boxset is absolutely amazing! Forget about Morricone's spaghetti western music... this is where it is! The first disc is my absolute favorite, then followed by the third. His unique arrangements are comparable to no one. Although, the lounge revival is long past us, this music is timeless and will leave you begging for more.

Check out the soundtracks to Le Casse, Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, and La Donna Invisible.

5 out of 5 stars Great Box Set but has Copy Protection!.......2004-09-22

Ennio Morricone is the master of Italian soundtracks. Listening to these gems transports you inside the movies! This is a great box set especially at the price being offered by Amazon. This same box set goes for $50 and more at other sites. But there's something very ugly lurking in this box set: It has the Macrovision CDS-200 copy protection. Which means people who enjoy taking their music with them on portable devices will have lots of Internet searching to do to find out how to rip these 3 wonderful CDs! Shame on Amazon for not pointing this out in their description. Other internet sites that sell this box set, do disclaim that it has copy protection. Macrovision has supposedly released a CDS-300 version of their copy protection, but there is no news regarding whether this box set will be re-released with the newer copy protection. The new version does allow you to rip it for personal use.

You can get around it, I won't tell you how, but you can! No, I'm not a pirate, I own over 800 CDs that I've purchased all legally, I don't trade my mp3s, but I like to take my music with me.

It's a shame that people like me that do purchase CDs instead of downloading the crap that's out there have to pay the price.

    Sincerely,

    Frank Castro

    5 out of 5 stars Mucho Maestro.......2004-06-10

I'm not sure which is more amazing--the sheer overwhelming volume of films Ennio Morricone has scored over the years, or the fact that he has produced so much beautiful music in the service of so many obscure, second-rate and otherwise forgettable ones. There is a generous sampling of the latter on display in this 3-disc set, culled from late-sixties and early-seventies films whose titles even the most hardcore of movie--or Morricone--fans would be hard-pressed to recognize. And yet, as always, the variety, the quality and the beauty of the music is unsurpassed. This is a compilation for the Morricone collector who thinks he's heard it all before--there is very little of the overlap or duplication found in so many of the other compilations of this great artist's work. All of which gives the music a fresh, vibrant quality while remaining unmistakably, inimitably Morricone. Cool packaging too.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!!.......2007-02-19

"Alibi, Pt 2" is a great CD and shows Grays new writing level. It's a song that takes it's time to set the mood before exploding with Grays natural passion. The first track is a live version of "Alibi" done flawlessly. I bought it for the excellent bonus tracks like "Long Gone Now" and "Sacred Ground". I know enough to expect nothing but perfection from Mr. Gray and have yet to be disappointed. They are full of all the emotion felt through out the "Life in Slow Motion" album and should and could have easily fit on the studio album.
The last bonus is a directors cut of the "Alibi" video. It's amazing and goes perfectly with the emotion of Grays writing. It's full of the great stuff that should be on a bonus disc and a must for lovers of great music.

2 out of 5 stars Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07

Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).

With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.

Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.

Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.

Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).

As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19

Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.

This double-disc treat covers Morricone's work from 1965 to 1995 and contains mostly never-before-released material from 40 different motion pictures, many of which demonstrate his quirkier side. Many are from less-known films like To Forget Palermo and What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution? But there are also more famous tracks like the main titles to Cinema Paradiso and My Name Is Nobody as well as the haunting "Chi Mai" from Maddalena. Though best known for his much-imitated and oppressively cute spaghetti-Western themes, Morricone here demonstrates his much more intriguing romantic and melancholic sides. His title song to Farewell to Moscow is among his saddest and menacing works and, like several other selections, can be the preferred antidote to Prozac. --Joseph Lanza
