Though Are You Passionate? is Neil Young's studio-recorded follow-up to 2000's Silver & Gold, it might well have emerged on the heels of Harvest Moon. While both Crazy Horse and Booker T. & the MGs swing by to add ballast to several of these 11 brand-new tracks, gentle weepers like "Don't Say You Love Me," "When I Hold You in My Arms," and the softly lilting title track recall Young's aforementioned 1992 work while suggesting that the once outspoken social critic and on-again, off-again CSN&Y member is mellowing. Further proof of that can be found in the tender opening song, "You're My Girl"--a postcard from a father to a daughter on the cusp of adulthood and presumably inspired by Young's daughter Amber--as well as in the lazy, languid "Two Old Friends." Are You Passionate?'s one serious clunker, "Let's Roll," was inspired by the 9/11 cell-phone call Todd Beamer placed moments before he and other passengers on Flight 93 went down in a Pennsylvania field. You can't fault the guy for commemorating a heroic act and making a personal donation to the Beamer family, but all his talk of "going after Satan on the wings of a dove" and "facing down evil" sounds like a guy who's spent more time watching CNN than honing his lyrics. --Kim Hughes

I love the sound on this cd. It's pure Neil with his les paul plugged into one of the loudest amps in the world. On all but one song he's backed up by one of the greatest rhythm sections in R&B history. For 'Going Home' he's with his old buddies, Crazy Horse.

This cd is amazing and deserves the highest type of rating.

`Are You Passionate?' is, at best, a mediocre album. In fact, I'd say it's Neil's worst since the horrible Geffen years in the `80's. On first listen, it's almost totally forgettable. The first impression is it's too slow, too long, and sounds too similar throughout. Second and third listens, however, do reveal a few good songs.
"Differently", "When I Hold You In My Arms", "She's a Healer" and the title track are all pretty decent, very laid back songs. Neil hasn't lost his touch with the lyrics either. In "When I Hold You" he addresses the problems of being old in the music industry, gangster rappers glorifying crime, and the threat of nuclear war in one verse - and pulls it off. "She's a Healer" has got to be the best song on the album. It's slow burning blues Neil Young style. Even with this song there's still problems. It goes on for over nine minutes which is way too long for a song where not much is going on and if you're gonna have a line that says "all I got is a broken heart and I don't try to hide it when I play my guitar" you better follow it up with some kind of inspired solo.
But the one track which is the true focal point of the album has to be "Let's Roll". No one seems to like this one. One reviewer went so far as to say it's "an insult to heroism" and goes on to wildly misinterpret the whole song, calling it "offensive", "damaging", and "meaningless". I don't like the song that much either, but the only thing really wrong with it is the music just doesn't match the lyrics. The funky riff doesn't seem to set an appropriate mood and the chorus is bad. Don't expect it to live up to "Ohio".
Most Neil Young fans should give `Are You Passionate?" a pass. For the hardcore fan, try to find it used. Thank God for `Greendale', which came right after this album and proved Neil's still just as good as he ever was.

Primero que todo, para poder entender y disfrutar este CD, los fans mas antiguos del señor Young, deben aceptar que este disco es totalmente diferente al catalogo musical que nos ha acostumbrado durante su camaleonica carrera (sobre todo los conceptos folk acusticos - en solitario o con los Stray Gators y descargas electricas- principalmente con los Crazy Horse).
En esta oportunidad, el viejo vaquero canadiense se ha rodeado de los "soulistas" (el legendario Booker T en los teclados y uno de sus compadres, "Duck" Dunn, en el bajo, y coros femeninos de su señora y hermana. Esta formacion le ha dado el toque soul de los 50-60 a su musica, expresada en un marcado organo acompañante con unos solos melodicos de guitarra hechos por el viejo Young, mas que todo llevando la melodia que como solos propios de guitarra lider como por ejemplo "Ragged Glory". Esta es una constante en 10 de las 11 canciones que componen el disco, con excepcion del rockero "Goin Home", en la cual se hace acompañar de los Horsemen, de ahi el sonido tipo "Broken arrow".
En lo que a liricas se refiere como el mismo nombre lo indica, el tema principal del disco es el amor, expresado en todas las formas posibles para cada uno de los seres queridos, letras intimas diferentes a anteriores conceptos politicos, sociales que son fieles a lo que ha sido su tematica discografica.
Estoy de acuerdo con aquellos que afirman que no es un disco determinante en su carrera como Harvest, Ragged Glory e incluso Greendale, que la energia y quimica musical con Booker T, no es la misma que con los Horsemen; pero acuerdense que este señor lleva mas de 30 años ininterrumpidos de creatividad musical, y que aun su peor disco (que no son mas de 2) esta por encima del promedio mediocre musical que vivimos en nuestros tiempos.
Es un disco precioso para escuchar con tu ser querido y para disfrutar tranquilamente. A entender el mensaje del viejo, seamos apasionados con quienes amamos. Larga vida a este maravilloso maestro, que cada que vez que quiere nos enseña lo que es un verdadero artista.

DONALD "DUCK" DUNN'S DRIVING BASSLINES AND JONES' LILTING ORGAN RIFFS IN THE BACKGROUND FAITHFULLY CONVEY THE OLD MEMPHIS MAGIC, AND WORK AS THE PERFECT FOIL FOR YOUNG'S TRADEMARK ROUGH-HEWN, SINEWY GUITAR SOUND. ON GOIN'HOME THESE GUYS CAPTURE, FINALLY, THE NATIVE AMERICAN BEAT YOUNG HAS OFTEN (SOMETIMES ERRANTLY) PURSUED.

I have been a giant Neil young for over 3 decades.Neil's willingness to experiment is well known but this match up does not work very well.Poor Neil is totally out of his element with the slick polished stuff Booker turns out.Neil's charm has always been "planned diharmony".Bookers stuff takes the teeth out of the tiger.
The album bored me to tears with the exception of "going home".Ah well just another one of Neil's famous detours.I sure hope that Neil comes back with some Crazy Horse stuff real soon.

Naturally, one must posess a predisposition for this music appreciation. That said, when played to restore your inner-energy...it works. The specific selection and sequence provide that balance best meant to reenergize. Normally, I'm not 'that' into this music-presentation. For some reason at the time of perusing, it seemed logical to give it a try. Ultimately, I am very glad that I did...powerful stuff, indeed.

this recording is worth the money to buy, especially since it has two c.d.s inside. the songs are indeed fine music, many of the masterworks which you "need" to have. but it is neither the finest recording, nor is it a collection of the finest performances. i am in a near-spectacular choral group which performs these works, and i tend to get overly emotionally involved with grand art. so it is especially helpful, that like the other reviewer said, you can consider playing this through an audio player at your workplace.

These CD's are excellent resources for those who don't realize some of the musical heritage has been lost by the Church and needs to be reclaimed.

This has got 2 be 1 of my fav. cd's of all time. The variety & arrangment seems 2 be very well planned. While all of the songs are very beautiful & breathtaking, my 2 favs are the Requiem for My Friend by Preisner & the Dies Irae immediately following it. If you ever run across the Preisner Requiem I would highly recommend that you buy it b/c it is soooo expressive & emotional.

From the first to the last song, I enjoyed every one!! Great sound, lots of energy, emotion and talent on this CD!! If you are looking for a good rock CD, try this one out especially at this good bargain price. So much great talent out there that's even better than what I've been hearing on my radio stations lately.

This CD is a very influencial disc and every song carries the sounds and lyrics through just as all great albums. I cant wait for when the band will tour in my area or the next CD to be released.             Aaron Thompson deserves a bigger stage. This collection of songs was written and produced by Thompson himself and several of them, with airplay, would be "hit" records. I especially recommend "Salt," "Wayo," "Bask in Your Sunlight," "Who Am I?" and "No More Fear" as sensational. You will want to play them for your friends. Without exaggeration, there are 5 or 6 other tunes on the CD which you will want to play over and over again. Thompson creates inspiring, thought-provoking and entertaining music. Thompson is a talented Catholic musician, but whatever your theological bent may be, buy this and you will never regret it. (By the way, I have never met him, so I am not a "shill," just a fan.)
