5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-09

As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17

I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.

As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11

This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers

4 out of 5 stars One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01

Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden treasure.......2007-01-08

I grew eating bread, milk and Zep. The first time I heard 'Immigrant song' I felt a knock-out beat. But 'Hey hey what can I do?' has been my favourite companion for a long time. The most part of Zep fans love this song, and if you do really want to test their fidelity, then ask them of 'Hey hey what can I do?'. Maybe, the Page's choice to exclude it from several collections and best of and from live song lists has made the fortune of this song. If you truly love Led Zeppelin you have to share this unforgotten treasure with us.

5 out of 5 stars Get this single for that gem on the b-side........2006-12-29

It's so hard to believe ''Hey Hey What Can I Do'' did'nt make LZ3, considering this track surely would've been a massive hit. Instead it could only be found on this single release and was very rare and much unheard by many until over 20 years later with the LZ multi-disc compilation.

''Hey Hey...'' is a pure ballad as it is also literally a perfect song; the bass, the acoustic guitar, vocals/backing vocals blend so well together that it just has to be heard by all LZ fans as well as fans of music in general.

Like I said in the title, get this single if you don't need the LZ compilation. The B-side is essential listening.

5 out of 5 stars Immigrant Song CD.......2006-02-27

A bargain for the price! I'd have paid more to hear and own the two songs on this CD. Other reviewers have also commented that the best thing about this CD is the second song Hey Hey What Can I Do - and they are right! Plant's vocals are outstanding and Page and the boys do their normal outstanding job - the balance, beat and flow of the song makes we wonder why Atlantic would not have put this song on III or a future releases? Oh well - I have it now - a must buy for the serious Zeppelin fan!!!!! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Hey What Can I Do.......2005-08-17

I actually bought this for Hey, Hey What Can I Do. Two great songs by one great band Led Zeppelin.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2003-01-22

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

5 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01

Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.

I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.

2 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18

For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20

A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.

Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.

Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.

It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-25

These are old recordings, so quality isn't perfect, but these are beautiful songs, beautifully sung. Considering you get two discs, it's a bargain.

2 out of 5 stars not enough bang for the buck.......2006-04-28

It seems a crime that, in order to get John McCormack singing "I'm Falling in Love with Some One," you have to shell out big bucks for this CD. I can't abide opera, and there are too many arias here sung in foreign languages to justify a capital investment. McCormack also does a striking rendition of "Because," which is missing from this CD. maybe we'll get lucky and Archeophone will put together a few disks, all in English, and I'd pay their price, steep though it usually is.

5 out of 5 stars Plant and Page would be proud!.......2000-08-02

I never thought anyone could out-sing Robert Plant, but Zelko does! His rendition of "Immigrant Song" in his own rave-rock style should delight Zep fans as well as queens and kings of clubs everywhere, and should head straight to the top of the dance charts. Just so Pagey doesn't get slighted, the mixes feature excellent guitar playing as well. :) Remember the name Zelko - you'll be hearing a lot from him!
